NOW in its fourth year, Raymond Terrace’s King Street Heritage Festival continues to enjoy success re-creating history for the enjoyment of visitors.

Organised by the Raymond Terrace and District Historical Society, Secretary Mrs Laraine Brown told News Of The Area, “This year the event was another big success with hundreds of visitors.”

Returning to the Festival, the Wallalong Boys entertained the crowd with their folk music.

Joining the Festival this year were the Black Joak Dancers, bringing traditional English Cotswold dancing to the Terrace.

One of over 300 styles of dancing, the merry bells strapped to the calves combined with the floral crowns of the dancers, a mesmerising dance routine added to the joviality of the day.

said of the experience, “My son Oliver and I definitely enjoyed the large marching band.”

“That is something you do not see every day and they showed great skill and obviously had spent many hours of practice.”

Mr Blackman has a traveling show that teaches the public and school students about life for a soldier during World War I. He told News Of The Area, “Our display covers what life was like for

Councillor Abbott is committed to delivering on her role as a Councillor and sees being a working mother as just one exciting new challenge to undertake, she is also a reservist in the Royal Australian Air Force.

She believes that being a parent will bring a new perspective to her role as a councillor.

While Councillor Abbott

has always been keen to support opportunities for children and youth she will soon be able to view these opportunities through the eyes of motherhood as well.

SALT Ash has acquired a splash of colour, with the addition of a colourfully painted shipping container on the roundabout heading to the Tilligerry peninsula.

Shane Keno from Up&Up and Jamie Brewster from the New Hope Youth drop in centre in Tanilba Bay, helped the community of Salt Ash Brighten up their Community Helping Community container.

The container located in the grounds of Port Stephens Church of Christ on the corner of Nelson Bay and Lemon Tree Passage roads.

“We need more volunteers to help on the day, every pair of hands will help,” she said.

The clean up is supported by Port Stephens Council and will see garden beds weeded, infrastructure painted and cleaned.

The work isn’t too arduous, and the Tomaree Business Chamber is hoping that many hands will make light work on the day.

You can register to volunteer on the day by simply turning up to the Donald Street west car park at 7.30am for an induction prior to the clean up commencing at 8am finishing at 1pm or earlier.

Volunteers are invited to stay and enjoy free entertainment and a BBQ which will be hosted by Port Stephens Council to celebrate the opening of the Yacabba Street extension.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

THIS week’s PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) winners were presented at Thursday night’s ceremony at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace.

Special guests Tracy Iles, Auxiliary Lieutenant and Ron Peterson, Envoy of the Salvation Army presented the awards this week.

Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz from the MarketPlace Raymond Terrace told News Of The Area, “Tracy and Ron have worked in the community for many years adding great value to all they do.”

“The Salvation Army is more than a shop or church, they are our friends and many of us know that during floods, fires or just needing a friend to listen or a helping hand the Salvation Army has been there for our community,” she said.

This week’s winners are: Jessica Cox from Hunter River High School: for helping a young boy who had lost his way to a local shopping centre.

Jessica was very responsible in phoning for help, in order to get the young boy safely to his correct destination.

Rhys Stewart from Irrawang High School: for participating in the World’s Greatest Shave, and raising funds for the Leukaemia foundation to support his friend whose Dad had passed away

Sonja Dawson is close to completing her educational dream as a mature age student.

Ms Dawson, 30, born in Poland and grew up in Germany.

She traveled around Australia doing the common backpacking experience of so many European young people.

After meeting her nowhusband, Sonja initially went back to Germany and started studying, but decided to move back to Australia to be with him.

Sonja told News Of The Area, “Getting a visa is very difficult, and the process comes with restrictions in terms of studying.”

“Once I was a permanent resident I could finally return to my studies, so I started studying psychology.”

“Since high school, I have wanted to study psychology because I am just interested in how the mind works, why people interact the way they do, and what drives us to do the things we do,” she said.

Sonja is now looking forward to completing her studies in her new homeland, and is inviting

One of my best friends is getting married and she recently announced her bridesmaids.

Even though five of us are as thick as thieves and go everywhere together, she has three bridesmaids and I am not one of them. I’m devastated.

Dear Miss KL,

There’s an old saying: always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Maybe your friend just wants to increase your odds in the ‘getting married’ department. I can understand you must be devastated, but being a bridesmaid isn’t always such a great gig. Brides-to-be are hard work. They turn into demanding, expensive bridezillas that want you to spend a fortune on your dress, even though you have yellowtoned skin and they’ve picked the most ridiculous shade of orange, so you look like a rather unwell lobster. You then have to buy matching shoes, knowing you will never wear them again and they’ll be on the Port Stephens Buy Swap and Sell site the day after the wedding for a fraction of what you paid.

On top of that there’s the Hens’ Night to organise. This is an event where you invite lots of people who seem to have an inability to forward deposit money. You then need to organise all the trimmings, from ‘friend of the bride’ sashes to phallic straws to a stripper who looks young enough to be your son, in fact ends up being your friend’s son, and all you want to do is wrap him in a blanket and give him a cup of Milo instead of having to endure the embarrassment of watching him gyrate to ‘I Want to be a Cowboy’.

At the actual wedding, there’s a whole range of duties to attend to, such as ushering people to their seats, dancing with a groomsman who smells like he’s doused himself in Brut 33, taking the bride to the toilet and holding her dress while she relieves herself, and remaining stone cold sober because she wants you to say a speech.

As a guest, you will have so much more fun. You can sit with your partner, drink and eat as much as you like, and when the bride inevitably ends up whinging to you about her bridesmaids, you can just give her a comforting wink and say, ‘It is for that very reason, that you will never be a bridesmaid at my all-expenses-paid wedding in Paris. I care about you too much.’

Qualify for State Pennants Finals

FRANK Ward, Nelson Bay Golf Club member, has achieved the rare feat of “shooting his age”.

Frank, who turned 89 in April, had 88 strokes in the competition last Saturday.

When questioned however, Frank revealed that this was the fifth time he has done it, previously achieving the feat at age 80, 82, 83 and 88.

Frank said he almost did it at age 75 as well, when he missed the 3 final putt.

This time he needed a 5 on par 5 18th hole, and he confidently rolled in the putt.

Frank still plays off a very competitive handicap of 20, and he reckons he still has a lot of good rounds in him.

THE Golf State Pennants are an annual competition organised by Croquet NSW and Nelson Bay Croquet Club entered teams for the first time in 2018. The Division 3 team has completed the regional qualifying matches unbeaten and will play in the final series to determine the Division Champions at CNSW HQ at Mackey Park in Sydney during June.

Little Pantry Co Racing Team

MEDOWIE’S very own racing team is hosting their official launch, and they’re teaming it with a special fundraiser.

Dean Megahey, Ben Brawn, Neil Upton, Peter Ewen, and Tom O’Neil make up the Little Pantry Co Racing Team, and they are hosting their official season launch on 26 May. The Racing Team and their sponsor, the Little Pantry Co Cafe, will combine forces and host a fundraiser at their official launch, raising funds for Melanoma Institute of Australia.

There will be lots of family fun to be had, including face painting, games, raffles and prizes to be won.

There will also be collection points for donations at Coles, local schools and various businesses for two weeks post the event.

The team at the Little Pantry Co will be generously donating 100% of their profits from the entire day to this very deserving cause.

Owner of Little Pantry Co, Ms Zali Morcom, told News Of The Area, “We are so proud as a business to support this great team, and couple it with supporting a charity that’s close to our hearts.”

The Melanoma Foundation of Australia was an easy choice for the Little Pantry Co team, as their Barista Jordyn Russell lost her father only six months ago to Melanoma.

The fundraiser will fall on the six month anniversary of Jordyn losing her father.

Jordyn told News Of The Area, “This is such a nice way to raise awareness and funds for an important cause.”

“I think my Dad would have liked it.”

Mr Tom O’Neill, Captain of the Little Pantry Co Racing Team, told News Of The Area, “We’re looking forward to a great day, come along and meet the team and support this important charity.”

Mitchell Pearce at Men of League

THE Port Stephens branch of the Men Of League Foundation are hosting another charity event for this worthwhile cause, at Nelson Bay Golf Club.

With one week to go, we take a look at the ‘Hand In Hand’ dinner on Saturday night, which incorporates three guest speakers, auctions and live entertainment by The Hummingbirds.

There is a distinct Newcastle Knights flavour to the three guest speakers with John Quayle, Ashley Gordon and Mitchell Pearce all having strong links to the club.

Quayle was a past player with Easts and Parramatta before becoming one of Australia’s best sports administrators.

Not only taking the fight to Super League as General Manager of the

ARL, but also joining SOCOG who implemented the best Olympic Games the world had seen at Sydney 2000.

More recently he has been a major part of the team who has helped the Knights get back on their feet, no small achievement.

Ashley “Flash” Gordon is a Newcastle Knights icon.

Gordon was the club’s first signing, while he was still in high school, exciting and enthralling many Knights fans during the early years.

He went on to win the Dally M Winger of the Year award in 1990 and has continued to be a big influence within the Newcastle rugby league community.

Mitchell Pearce is the current Knights co-captain and halfback, however a torn pectoral has severely reduced his season.

News Of The Area caught up with Mitchell ahead of

Saturday’s dinner.

“The Men Of League Foundation is really important for what it does for the game we play and love, and looking after past and present players,” Pearce told News Of The Area.

“I love being part of giving back, because the game gives us so much.”

“I also love spending time with old players, because the history of the game means a lot to me and I know it does to many of the boys.”

“You always learn something special when talking with those that have done it before,” he said.

When asked about Port Stephens, and whether he has experienced our beautiful Paradise, Mitchell was enthusiastic.

“Oh yeah, I love port Stephens.”

“My girlfriend and I get up there occasionally for a

drive on weekends.”

“It’s a great part of the world, calm and peaceful,” he said.

And for all the Knights fans out there, Mitchell had some news on that pec muscle that’s kept him off the park.

“I’ll hopefully be back on the field in the next six weeks or so.”

“The injury is coming along well, but I have to get through the hard slog of training in the next month and play it as it comes.”

“It’s killing me not being out there,” he said.

We are sure many Knights fans feel the same way, Mitchell.

While the touch teams were playing football the runners were taking off in the Cross Country Zone Carnival.

“The runners have done their school proud yet again, out of the 47 runners, Tomaree High School had 40 qualify for the Hunter Carnival with top 10 positions.”

The Zone Champions were Claudia Samoilenko (14 Years), Logan Stewart (15 Years) and Tia Shiner (16 Years).

“All of the students were exemplary in their behaviour and represented their school beautifully, we were super proud to be associated with such an excellent group of young people,” she said.

Also doing well were the Tomaree High School surfers who also competed at the Regional Championships.

Ellie Clayton-Brown won the U19 Girls, Michael Clayton Brown placed second in the U16 Boys and Ellie ClaytonBrown and Charli Law combined to win the U19 Girls Team.

The under 14’s and under 16’s went to Lakeside to take part in the Annual Knights KO. The under 14’s were unlucky not to win a game losing two games after the full-time siren had sounded.

The under 16’s got off to a flyer beating Irrawang and St. Joseph’s to set up a grand final match with Mt. View.

They went close on several occasions but unfortunately went down by one try.

Every student involved should be proud of their efforts in the Knights KO. The whole school offers their congratulations to everyone who competed and to those who qualified for the next level of competition in their sport.
