Their project this year is to save the planet.

In our beautiful Riverside Park in Raymond Terrace, a tree planting ceremony took place this week, with some special guests.

Scot MacDonald MLC, Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer and Port Stephens Council General Manager Wayne Wallis came together with Rotary District Governor Helen Ryan to plant a tree for a very special cause.

The ceremony was a show of support for a Rotary initiative to plant 1.2 million trees worldwide.

Rotary Trees making a difference Rotary has asked each of its 1.2 million members to plant a tree by Earth Day, the 22 April 2018, to make a significant statement about the importance of building a sustainable environment and the need to address climate

change.

Centre looking to break a record

LAST year MarketPlace Raymond Terrace, along with customers, raised over $5,444.00 within seven hours in their ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ event and they’re hoping to break the record

this year.

Centre Manager Colleen Mulhollan-Ruiz told News Of The Area, “Overall in 2017, MarketPlace along with our customers and volunteers raised $17,000 with the World’s Greatest Shave, Light the Night, Christmas Show N

“This fundraising is so important to our local area to help keep transport cars on the road for patients, the up keep of the home for families to stay at no charge near the Mater Hospital while love ones are having treatment, and of course for the research to try and stop cancer.”

“I will say in 2015 we raised $11,000 in the one day and I would love to go back to this amount if possible this year, so we’re setting the challenge for the community.”

The event will take place on Thursday 15 March between 11am and 7pm, live in the centre court outside Big W. The community are invited to shave their heads,

After a brief break over summer, 11 year old Keira returned to the track recently at the Little Athletics Regional Championships at Mingara.

“She won all 4 of her events, the 100m, 200m, triple jump and long jump, with a record leap of 5.12m, a record that has stood for 28 years,” proud dad John McGregor said.

A modest Keira said, “I wish to thank my coach Charles Ringuet for the hours, days, weeks, years he has spent helping me .”

Skyla on her way to Stardom Skyla Conlon has been building on her love of performing, drama and music, and perfecting her skills, from a very young age.

SKYLA Conlon has been building on her love of performing, drama and music, and perfecting her skills, from a very young age.

She has just added a unique experience to the portfolio, being cast in an exhibition piece that will be played indefinitely in the High Court of Australia.

The video is an information documentary style short film about the constitution of Australia, and will run on a repeating loop in a purpose built theatre at the high court in Canberra.

The theatre and film will open the the public on 9 April and be open to anyone who visits the venue, including school groups.

Skyla attends Hunter School of Performing Arts as a drama students and this is

her first professional casting Skyla’s love of acting began with public speaking in her junior primary years, where she realised straight away it was something she loved.

Her mother and father thought she might enjoy drama classes, so in year 2 she started at the Young People’s Theatre.

Skyla told News Of The Area, “I love everything about drama, simply being on stage performing and the buzz everyone feels before every show, or the sense of accomplishment I feel after every show.”

This is Skyla’s first paid and on camera role, but she has already performed in quite a few musicals.

Skyla said “Some of my favorites so far have been Cinderella and winnie the pooh, which I did with Young People’s Theatre, and

Hairspray and Grease with Harvest Rain.”

Skyla’s Mother Samantha keeps an eye on jobs that come up, and she will keep auditioning in the hopes of more work like this role.

Skyla remarked, “I have 2 auditions coming up this month, my schools musical Little Mermaid and my drama schools production of Pinocchio.”

Skyla thoroughly enjoyed her first on camera experience, telling News Of The Area, “I loved having a hair & makeup artist, I also loved my costume and working on set at the NSW Rail Museum.”

“I felt very special because the production company paid for all our accommodation and all our food.”

“Overall, it was such a great experience, and I cannot wait to do it again,” she said.

My husband watched a movie recently about two men who knew they were close to death and therefore created a bucket list. Now he has this grand idea that we should do the same. He wants to go snorkel diving with stingrays, climb snow capped mountains and various other things we have no time or money for. I’m at a loss as to how I should deal with this. Please help!

Mrs HA, Bagnalls Beach Dear Mrs HA, Good Lord. Okay, initially I thought this was a bit of a disaster. On closer inspection, I now realise that you have been offered a blessing in disguise.

Many of us get stuck in a rut, Mrs HA. We work, we buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have, we gossip about people who don’t deserve to be gossiped about, and we complain about first world problems such as having to scan our own grocery items.

These are not problems; they are reminders that we have the capacity to make choices in a country that is relatively prosperous and laid back.

I don’t want to get all Louise Hay on you and start chanting affirmations, but health is the number one priority. Anything else is a bonus. If you and your husband are well enough to swim with stingrays or dance up and down alps like the Von Trapp family, I say go for it. Don’t wait until you get a poor diagnosis like the characters from your movie.

The other advantage is that your husband has watched what seems to be an inspirational, feel good, family-friendly flick.

Now if he’d watched Pulp Fiction, he may be suggesting that you snort coke and become hitmen. Or if he’d watched Vikings, maybe you’d need to go through your kid’s dress-up box for some faux fur and swords. What if he’d been inspired by Forrest Gump and you had to run for miles and/or buy a prawn trawler.

I reckon you’ve gotten off pretty lightly, Mrs HA. Make the most of it.

Rugby League Fields in honour of his friend’s father who passed away from Leukaemia.

“I wanted to raise money to help the Leukaemia foundation as I have seen my mates struggle with losing their dad and thought I could do this to help,” Rhys told News Of The Area.

Boy of many talents

IRRAWANG High student Rhys Stewart is one of those people who are full of surprises.

Not to mention full of many talents.

Rhys has only just started his time in high school after commencing Year 7 earlier in the year, but he hasn’t wasted any time.

He has already represented Irrawang High School at the Zone and Regional Swimming Competitions, competed in the NSW All Schools Triathlon and successfully auditioned for Irrawang High’s famous Drum Corp.

Sport has always been a big part of Rhys’ life, playing for the Raymond Terrace Roosters Junior Rugby League Club for the past seven

years as well as being part of Mount Kanwary Public School’s State Swim team last year.

However, his interest in triathlon has only been a recent development.

Rhys has been a member of the Tomaree Tri Club, and participating in Club races, for the past two years.

Funnily enough, the NSW All Schools Triathlon has been the longest race Rhys has competed in.

Rhys completed the course, consisting of a 400m swim, 10km bicycle leg and a 4km run, in a time of 49 minutes and 42 seconds.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, now Rhys is shaving his head as part of the World’s Greatest Shave.
