From dance floor to Hinton tie swimming pool with Karuah

By Rachael VAUGHAN WHEN a well-known, successful musician needs a one-of-a-kind guitar, Port Stephens is the place to make that happen.

Somerset Barnaby, a blues musician who has toured around 30 countries in the last four years, ordered a very special custom piece from guitar manufacturers, ASD Guitars Australia, complete with some meaningful Indigenous artwork to finish it off.

Andrew Duncan of ASD Guitars Australia, based in East Seaham, created this very unique guitar. and Aboriginal Artist Peter Kafer added his artistic expertise to finish off the masterpiece.

Andrew Duncan began his dream ten years ago, with a desire to build some of the best guitars in the world.

Exchange Student Shines EXCHANGE student programs offer schools, students and host families an invaluable plethora of life experiences.

Irrawang High School are active participants in welcoming exchange students, and are currently the host school for an Austrian student living with her host family in Raymond Terrace.

Svea Paukert is a Year 10 Austrian exchange student who has been in Australia for just over two months now and is loving her Aussie adventure.

As an only child, Svea is thoroughly enjoying her busy life with the Aylett family in Raymond Terrace, and her five “new” siblings.

Host mother Rochelle says that Svea has involved herself with family activities, which

Having studied English for five years at school, Svea’s grasp of the English language is very good, although she says she is still thinking in German most of the time.

Svea’s school in Graz,the second largest city in Austria after Vienna, is about the same size as Irrawang High School, with around 800 students.

However, there are a few differences, in that there is no uniform and each class stays together for the whole day.

Marian SAMPSON has been a real challenge for Svea, and she has coped by spending most her time in the air conditioning.

She has also enjoyed her time at our beautiful local beaches finding them very different from the pebbly European ones.

As she is heading home on July 1st, Svea will experience only a little of our Port Stephens winter, very different from her normal winter in Graz where temperatures can reach minus 17.

Irrawang High School staff member Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, ‘We sincerely hope you make the most of every minute while you are a temporary Aussie Svea, and we look forward to seeing you when you return to see us all one day.”

THE MidCoast Business Awards were on last Friday and local Real Estate agent Denise Haynes, Managing Director of R&R Property, has taken home the top honours.

Award Finalist are judged by a panel of subject matter experts, selected from business and community leaders.

The Agency won the Awards for Excellence in Customer Service category for 2018.

Ms Haynes said, “I am incredibly proud to have won and accepted these awards from the Midcoast Business Chamber on behalf of the R & R Property Team. It is nice to be acknowledged for your dedication and hard work and I am especially pleased for the team to have their hard work noticed and

appreciated.”

Not only was the Agency recognised, but so was Ms Haynes individually.

Winner of the Outstanding Business Leader category for the Midcoast was awarded to Ms Haynes.

News Of The Area spoke to Denise Haynes after the event and she told us, “I was also humbled to be presented personally as the Winner of the Outstanding Business Leader category.”

The office is making inroads quickly into the Port Stephens markets, already selling numerous homes in 2018.

“We also support the annual Stroud Country Show and in particular the Medowie Markets monthly,” Denise told News Of The Area.

Roundabout to go in at busy intersection PORT Stephens Council has officially begun work on a $1.8 million upgrade to the intersection of Seaham Road and Raymond Terrace Road at Nelsons Plains.

The upgrade is being funded by the NSW Government’s Safer Roads Program and involves installing a roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow.

Work is being carried out by Council on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services and is estimated to take eight weeks, weather permitting.

Councillor Paul Le Mottee has welcomed the commencement of works, having called for a roundabout at this location for a long time.

“Traffic coming from Maitland is often backed up to Irrawang Bridge or beyond. Significant accidents are frequent and people are very prone to doing silly things at this intersection in its current form,” Cr Le Mottee said.

“In the past six years,

there have been 26 crashes at this intersection, 16 of which caused injuries.

“I am extremely grateful for the funding from the State Government for this much-needed project. I’m sure this money will save time, injuries and lives,” he added.

Work will take place from 6:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Saturday, with some work to be carried out at night as the project progresses.

Motorists heading south on Seaham Road will not be able to make a right turn at the road works and instead will need to use the roundabout at Newline Road should they wish to use Raymond Terrace Road.

To ensure the safety of motorists and workers, lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be imposed during work hours. Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, follow the direction of signs and traffic controllers.

IF you have not experienced the artwork of Jocelyn Archer, you are missing out.

Jocelyn is a proud Murri woman from the Larrakia mob from Darwin in the Northern Territory.

She is an incredibly talented Indigenous artist who paints with heart, spirit and passion.

Her artworks are full of culture and speak the stories of her ancestors through her brush, passing them down, ensuring they will be remembered forever.

Jocelyn has been painting since she was a young girl, and credits her father with teaching her how to paint.

Her favourite medium to create artworks in is acrylic paint, and she is most ‘at home’ when painting salt water animals.

Jocelyn’s children and grandchildren were raised strong in their culture and are proud of their ancestry.

Jocelyn’s artworks will ensure her families stories will live on, their stories will continue to be told, and they will leave their mark on this world.

Her art is centred on this story telling of Aboriginal culture, and sharing knowledge of the land and beliefs of Aboriginal people.

Jocelyn has four very unique pieces she has created that are destined for a special project.

Two of her grandsons, Antwone and Keaundre have been selected to attend representative tours and trips, so she has decided she wants to help her family to pay for the cost of these by giving away her art to four very lucky winners.

Jocelyn told News Of The Area, “These four paintings are special stories for me, and I’m pleased to see them go to some good homes to raise some money to show my grandchildren how proud I am of them and their achievements.”

“The first painting is a story about hatching turtles and all us kids sitting on rapid creek beach in the Northern Territory, watching them hatch each season, and the second painting is about the Salt Water Turtle, one of our main traditional tucker.”

“The third painting is in special memory of my Dad and Uncles hunting for stingrays with spears and the last one is about the Black and White cockatoos, and how they are warnings of the change of seasons, and how we would watch them after the bushfires,” she said.

The competition will be announced, run and drawn on Jocelyn’s brand new art page on Facebook.

Denise and her team recently hosted the Raymond Terrace Community Easter Egg Hunt which proved popular with this community.

From dance floor to swimming pool When your chosen sport isn’t available locally, what is a girl to do?

WHEN your chosen sport isn’t available locally, what is a girl to do?

Sign up for lots of new things, and give those a go in the meantime, that’s what.

This is exactly what Emily Whittington has done, and she’s achieving in a whole new range of sports.

Emily is twelve years old this month, and is a year seven student at Irrawang High School.

Her chosen sport is Rhythmic Gymnastics, which Emily started training at in 2012.

She competed in the State Titles and National Clubs

Championships in 2017 for rhythmic gymnastics.

There are no clubs available locally for the sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics, so this sport is on the back burner at this current time.

Emily is currently taking eight dancing classes per week at a local dance studio, but has never been one to not fill every bit of her week with being active.

She decided to give swimming a go at her school’s athletics carnival, and not surprisingly found that she is a pretty competent competitor there too.

Calling it ‘just a hobby’, Emily won awards for swimming at Zone level

swimming competitions in both 2016 and 2017.

She went one better this month, by being selected in her ‘hobby’ sport to compete in the 100m backstroke at the Combined High School swimming championships.

Emily is still working hard on her dancing, and staying active in general.

She is hoping to return to rhythmic gymnastics in the future.

Emily told News Of The Area, “There is a part of me that really likes competing, I always do my best, and have fun.”

The Hornets kicked off however the Roos, David Dodd, was the first to score only 8 minutes into the game 4/0.

Within 5 minutes the Hornets were into equal the score 4 all and again they were in only 3 minutes later with a converted try to take the score to Hinton 10 Karuah 4.
