By Rachael VAUGHAN ALL Year 10 students at Irrawang High School participated in the World of Work (WOW), a school to work transition program held over 3 days this week at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

The intention of WOW program was to provide students with the skills to become more articulate, confident and well mannered, to provide the students with a solid grounding in manners and social graces, to help our students transition from school to work, further education or training, and to to build confidence and the ability to relate to members of the community, whilst in a comfortable albeit unfamiliar setting.

The course covered many topics including; making the right first impression, creating and maintaining your own brand, interview skills, table etiquette, personal hygiene and presentation, goal setting, team building and communication skills.

Each day six community/business representatives had lunch with students, which according to the student feedback forms was a highlight of the day for many of

THERE’S a new scam doing the rounds in Port Stephens, and it’s tricking even the most tech savvy community members.

Anyone could fall victims of these scammers.

They are clever and very sneaky in how they go about things.

Port Stephens Local Area Command are encouraging all members of the public to be aware of a scam involving the use of Apple iTunes gift cards.

The scam is being conducted through three main methods.

The first method entails the scammer pretending to be from the Australian Taxation Office with their victims

being told that there is a warrant for their arrest.

Unless a ‘fine’ is immediately paid, the police will arrive and arrest them.

According to the scammer, the ‘fine’ can only be paid through Apple iTunes Gift Cards.

The second scam involves the scammer pretending to be from Telstra, asking their victim to help them catch a ‘hacker’ by buying Apple iTunes gift cards to use as a ‘trap’.

The scammer gets the victim to tell them the serial numbers of the gift cards and sells them on before the victim realises what has happened.

The third scam has the scammer pretends to be

from Centrelink and tells their victim that they are eligible for an additional payment, however they need to pay a release fee in Apple iTunes gift cards to receive their additional payment.

The scammers usually get their victims to travel to supermarkets or department stores and keep them on the phone in order to get the serial numbers required as quickly as possible.

A number of residents in Port Stephens have reported these calls recently, and Police are warning people to be vigilant.

P-Tech launch

HUNTER River High School P-TECH students are becoming ambitious thanks to the commitment time and dedication from dedicated teachers and industry partners.

P-TECH (Pathways to Technology)is the model being delivered at Hunter River High School, a partnership between education, industry and community.

It is a partnership with a clear purpose; to provide an industry supported pathway for young people to achieve, that strengthens their employment prospects.

Activities that link to The Pathways to Technology (P-TECH program) program has been offered to Year 10 students at the school since February this year.

Students took part in specific activities, events and information sessions that broadened their minds towards a P-TECH pathway in 2018.

A cohort of students have selected to study specific P-TECH pathways in Years 11 and 12 from next year.

This month, Hunter River High School opened their doors to reputable training providers; the NSW Department of Education Training services NSW, AMPcontrol Group, the University of Newcastle, BAE Systems, Tomago Aluminium, UAV Air, Varley Group, Department of Education NSW, Jetstar Airways, AiGroup and RDA Hunter, by hosting an official launch for their P-TECH program for the 40 odd students who will be participating in the program

in 2018.

Liana Nadalin, Hunter River High School Industry Liaison Officer, said “P-TECH will broaden their skills and knowledge, but the school will also focus on their journey and ensure each student becomes familiar with journaling their experiences.”

“The Hunter River High School students are becoming leaders, regardless of a title, P-TECH activities have improved maturity levels and their commitment to learning and future pathways.”

“This is leadership in the making.”

“Curiosity inspires and P-TECH is creating very curious inquisitive minds,” she said.

Thanks to this innovative national program, Hunter River High School students have been given a leg up into emerging technology streams such as advanced manufacturing and engineering, aero skills and aviation - remote piloting.

IT has been a long standing tradition at Christmas-time in Raymond Terrace that the Norfolk Pine in Sturgeon Street hat towers above the buildings will be lit with bright and colourful lights, as it has been every year since 1961.

This year the tradition continues, as Raymond Terrace Bowling Club again put on a night of festivities for the community.

The Bowling Club purchased the property two years ago, and despite not being contractually obliged to host the Christmas Festivities, they have said they will continue to do so.

Michael Harriss, Chairman of Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, told News Of The Area, “We are pleased to provide this night of fun for the community.”

“It is a wonderful tradition that we are glad to be able to continue.”

When last officially measured by the National Register of Big Trees, our Raymond Terrace Norfolk Pine measured in at a whopping 43 metres and was listed as Australia’s tallest Norfolk Pine.

Dear Mr PH, MY PH, my dear man. Have you ever read those ‘What I ate today’ columns? I think they are all telling furphies. Don’t you agree that furphy is a wonderful word? How can a word that conjures up an image of a cute little gonk with downcast eyes be related to deception and trickery?

Now, in those ‘What I ate today’ columns in glossy magazines, they always interview supermodels and ballet dancers and C-grade celebrities who write books about paleo diets, and what they are basically saying via their self-righteous meal plan is that we mere mortals are blubber-guts with zero self control.

It is hard not to feel slightly pathetic, when you read about someone eating organic goji berries washed down with a kale smoothie for breakfast, a handful of hand-harvested sprouts with vitamin water for lunch and a probiotic drink for dinner, because the poor waif is so fatigued that the thought of cooking a decent meal is beyond them.

Everything in moderation is a cliché worth recalling in these times of trouble, Mr PH. There’s no point starving yourself until you turn into a raving lunatic at the local drive-through shouting, “Get me the family pack and make it snappy” and eating it in the shadowy depths of the car park, because you’re starving to death.

PS: I don’t think you are cheating on your wife unless your subterfuge involves the woman next door (who also has no willpower).

Time for Christmas Carols

WITH December upon us comes the start of the Christmas Carols.

Jingle Bells can be heard in the shopping centres, radios are blaring out the perennial favourite, Wham’s Last

Christmas, and I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas means cracking open some bubbly in the hot Australian summer.

Christmas Carol events are planned across the region and they are an opportunity for the community to get together and spread some

festive cheer.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Williamtown, the Medowie Carols are back on this year.

Friday, 1 December at Ferodale Oval from 6pm and the sounds of music will fill the air.

Shower helping homeless A LITTLE dignity will be restored to people sleeping rough in Port Stephens, with the installation of a new shower thanks to the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Raymond Terrace and the Salvation Army.

The shower for the homeless is located at the Salvation Army church in Carmichael Street, Raymond Terrace and was

made possible by donations to both clubs, volunteers at the Salvation Army, as well as a $1,000 grant from Port Stephens Council.

John Chambers, Raymond Terrace Rotary Club community services director, says the shower has already received positive feedback.

“We all like to be clean, and when you’re homeless, where can you go? This

Showing there is no slowdown to their community spirit, the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade will be participating in the Carols too.

The Rotary Club is still looking for sponsorship to ensure the event can go ahead.

Mr Chambers said the project came about after consultation with the Salvation Army about what could be done to help the homeless community of Raymond Terrace.

“People don’t like putting their hand up and saying ‘I need help’, but after talking with the wonderful people at the Salvos, Rotary and Lions

The Raymond Terrace based venue is a finalist in the following categories: Best Cheap Eat Meal Under $15 (Country), Best Traditional Hotel Bar (Country), Heart of the Community and Industry

Rising Star in Rebekah Wagner.

“These are important awards for our industry and our community and we are thrilled to be amongst a prestigious group of finalists,” said Mr Hunt.

Tracy Iles, Auxiliary Lieutenant of the Salvation Army, says while the shower provides people with a safe space to get clean, it means so much more.

“You might think it’s just a shower, but to the people who use it, it means connection, hope and transformation,” she said.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the shower is a wonderful

example of community groups coming together to improve the lives of others.

“There are quite a few people in our community who are doing it tough, and this shower is one way that we can make their lives a little bit easier,” he said.

“Port Stephens Council is proud to support this initiative by the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Raymond Terrace and the Salvation Army, which has already been well received by those who need it most,” he added.

Village Tavern, Michael Millett told News Of The Area, “We are extremely proud and humble to be nominated for all of these awards.”

“Our new Head Chef Robert Wilkinson and his seasonal menus are a breath of fresh air to our restaurant, we are extremely happy with what he has accomplished here at Lakeside Village Tavern.”

Doris proudly displays her artwork at the Mater hospice and hospital, each with different meaning and colours, however, the one thing that is within each and every piece is a hidden dragonfly, this is her trademark, this stems from when she was playing down by the creek as a child a dragonfly could always be seen and it reminds her of happy times.

Doris is originally from Gilgandra, NSW and belongs to the Wiradjuri clan and currently lives in Anna Bay where she has her studio for creating Aboriginal artwork called Mandaang Art.

IT is a special occasion when you win an art competition, and even more so when your art will be used on the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles jersey for their 2017 Indigenous round.

Doris told News Of The Area, “It was my brother Hilton who brought the Sea Eagles competition to my attention.”

Doris explains the rationale behind her submission.

“I thought of the first time I ever saw the sea, and that was at Manly, the colours I chose were the Sea Eagles colours.”

“When I think of Manly, I

see a beautiful beach, the blue represents the waves and the small bone dots the warm sand; The circles with dots represent the communities that proudly define the Northern Beaches with the U shapes representing the people that make up those communities.”

Doris then goes on to explain, “Paths make their way to a maroon circle featuring the Sea Eagles logo, which represents Brookvale Oval; Manly’s spiritual gathering place.”

Doris’s artwork is by no means without deep meaning, which is what you would expect from an Aboriginal artist, each dot and
