By Rachael VAUGHAN KATE Washington MP decided her Christmas cards this year needed the best level of creative talent possible to make them special, so she put the call out to the preschoolers of Port Stephens to design her card.

For the first time, the design competition was directed to preschool students and entries were received from across the Port Stephens region.

The response was phenomenal, and News Of The Area is proud to report on the winning finalists and winning card designer.

An artwork created by Luke Elsegood of Salamander Bay has taken out the 2017 Port Stephens Christmas Card Design Competition as the overall winner.

Luke, aged 5, is a student at Karingal Preschool from Nelson Bay.

Kids Can Code

By Marian SAMPSON STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is the way ahead for jobs and Port Stephens Council library at Raymond Terrace is offering free CoderDojo workshops in the school holidays to compliment its regular Code Club.

The Dojo offers children aged between 8 and twelve years old a chance to learn skills like building websites, Apps and games.

CoderDojo is a global movement which believes that an understanding of programming languages is increasingly important in the modern world, that it’s both better and easier to learn these skills early, and that nobody should be denied the opportunity to do so! Any young person aged 7 – 17 can join and attend a Dojo for FREE! At a Dojo they will learn skills such as building a website, creating an app

or a game, and explore technology in an informal, creative, and social environment.

While the Dojo is one way to learn code the Library also offers Code Club which is run twice a week throughout school terms using Scratch code.

Donna Lloyd Branch Librarian of Raymond Terrace Library told News Of The Area, “Code Club Australia provides the modules and lesson plans.”

She believes that the six week program aims to give every child in Australia the skills, confidence and opportunity to use coding and shape their world.

It engages creative and problem solving skills in children.

“The children who have attended have grown in both confidence and ability to use Scratch, putting their own creative twist to the programs/games they have created,” she said.

The library hopes the CoderDojo which is currently booked out, will encourage new members to attend the

regular Code Club program during school terms.

THE big blue building in Heatherbrae is now the big green building, and it’s transformation is complete.

The doors to Heatherbrae Bunnings officially opened last week, with a long line of excited shoppers lined up to be the first in the doors.

Everyone seemingly brought their manners with them, and the opening went smoothly, as everyone filed in to check out the new wares on display.

Manager, Michele Hammond, told News Of The Area, “We’re so excited about the turn out, and the support of our local community.”

“It was a big last week, rushing to get everything ready in time to open.”

WITH a scorching summer already in full swing, with temperatures in January expected to continue to soar, water safety is a top priority for the local swimming pools.

To aid in ensuring that the safety of young children is prioritised, Belgravia Leisure, that run Lakeside (Raymond Terrace) Leisure Centre, Tomaree Aquatic Centre, Tilligerry Aquatic Centre, and Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness, have instigated a new safety program.

Ms Tanya Brunckhorst, Regional Manager of Royal Life Saving told News Of The Area, “The Keep Watch wristband is for every children five and under.”

“They will be given

a wristband that is compulsory to wear so the lifesavers know they need to be within an arm’s reach of the parent or adult in charge of the child.”

The wristbands are a waterproof paper type, similar to what people get given at paid recreation events and do not interfere with children’s movements in the pool.

The wristbands, Ms Brunckhorst said are about, “Identifying the nonswimmers and making parents more responsible and the children under their care being in arm’s reach.”

“The lifesavers are not babysitters.”

Ms Nicole Dunn, the Area Manager said, “Any child in the pool without an adult supervising them

will be asked by a lifesaver to leave and find their parent or caregiver.”

“We will explain the safety issues to the responsible adult.”

“It is designed around education of parents and families when they come to the Centre.”

Belgravia facilities have recently undergone a safety audit, with Mr Troy Hughes, the Operations Manager pleased with the result, telling News Of The Area, Lakeside scored 95%, Tomaree 94%, Tilligerry 89% and Kurri Kurri 93%.”

“These are all excellent results.”

The audits are conducted by the Royal Life Saving NSW Aquatic Safety Check and these results are considered exemplary.

Dear Jasminda, I recently received my ATAR and I didn’t get the result I was hoping for. I’m really annoyed.

People are not defined by a number . . . well, unless you are Kevin 07, Blink-182, James Bond 007, Ben Folds Five, The Fantastic Four . . . okay, some people are defined by numbers.

But let’s not allow that to ruin a good argument. Most people are not defined by numbers, and you should not be defined by your ATAR. It may seem as though it is the be all and end all of life as you know it, but trust me, there are plenty of ways to skin a cat.

Actually, don’t trust me on that one. I can think of only one way to skin a cat.

Of course you are feeling disappointed at this point in time. Particularly when there are multiple media reports placing people with an ATAR of 99.85 on a pinnacle. What is even worse is when these high achievers are quoted as being devastated that they didn’t get the score they were hoping for. What the?

To make you feel better, I took a quick survey of the people in my office, to see how their ATAR affected their lives. Here are their responses: “What’s an ATAR?” “At the end of the day it comes down to hard work and doing the monotonous, small things regularly. It is all about dedication and persistence.” (Picture several staff members sticking their fingers down their throats).

“I have never, in my entire life, been asked what my HSC result was in any interview, promotion, or training course.”

“Can you stop asking questions so we can close the building and go for a drink?”

“I didn’t get into the course I wanted to, but when I look back on it, I’m pretty pleased, because I now have absolutely zero desire to be a psychologist.” (Having worked with this person, that outcome is indeed fortunate).

So, Miss AK, fret not. With around one in three students failing to complete their studies within six years, there will be plenty of spots available.

Hunter River colour run HUNTER River High got colourful last week with a run new venture.

The staff and students braved the searing heat on the 40+ degree day, to participate in the school’s first Colour Run. Hunter River High School’s School Representative Council (SRC) organised the fundraiser, successfully

raising over $3,000 for school improvements.

Despite the heat, the day was a huge success and both students and staff had an absolute ball, made even more special with a visit from the Raymond Terrace Fire Brigade, who hosed down the students with cool water from the fire truck, as they completed each lap.

MarketPlace Raymond Terrace supplied every student and staff with refreshing ice-blocks at the end of their run, Terrace Meats Butcher and Browns Butchery donated sausages and Woolworths Central Plaza donated all the bread for sausage sizzle to celebrate.

Community Liaison Officer, Kerrie Howells said, “Without this tremendous community spirit and support, like that was shown to HRHS, events like

These committees provide a forum for open dialogue between the proponent and representatives of the local community, stakeholder groups and local councils on issues directly relating to the project.

We are looking for people who live locally or are a member of a stakeholder group (community, environment, Aboriginal or industry) to join the Brandy Hill Quarry Community Consultative Committee.

Your role as a committee member would be voluntary.

Selection criteria: You will be expected to contribute constructively to committee discussions, attend around (four) meetings a year, and communicate information about the Brandy Hill Quarry between the committee and the broader community.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

National Champs

IMUGI Taekwondo competed at the National All Styles Australian Championships on the 2-3 December held in Olympic Park Sydney.

The Imugi dojo took thirteen team members to compete.

Imugi competed in school colours for individual titles as well as having nine of the thirteen selected for the State Team event.

Ten Imugi’s came home National Champions with a total of fifteen National Titles, seven Reserve Champions, four Bronze medals and a long list of personal best efforts.

Chung Sa Nim Tony Gillespie and Kyo Sa Nim Kelly O’Brien were both named captains of their respective teams.

teams events always draw a lot of excitement.

I was the only person on my team who had competed at the national level and it was an honour to captain and coach the NSW women to a very convincing win over QLD in the final 4-1.”

“This year was particularly special for the NSW team as our long standing State Director retired with one last wish, to win both the Open Men and Open Women Team Shields and the Presidents Cup for the state with highest overall points tally.”

Not only did both the men and women afford the NSW Director Shihan Gary Palmer his retiring wish, NSW won a staggering seven of the eight team events, most of which included representatives from Imugi TKD. Tony Gillespie told

News Of The Area, “We are extremely proud of each and every Imugi.”

“Not only on their results but most importantly for their sportsmanship and camaraderie.”

“Imugi has built a reputation on being a exemplary school with strong martial art values and exceptional depth of skill,” he said.

Special mention to Chung Sa Nim Tony Gillespie and Hu Bae Nim Chase Thoburn on achieving 3 national titles each.

Imugi also managed to take out the Synchronised Forms event.

Imugi Taekwondo’s formal presentation night was held on 8 December where their club awards were announced.

The team is now taking a well earned break over Christmas ahead of 2018.
