Stephen Crowe is passionate about Port Stephens and told News Of The Area, “I love the diversity of Port Stephens, from the Rural West to the Tomaree Peninsula, there are so many different places to get to know.”

Stephen believes that Port Stephens can drive similar positive changes in our town centres, like those that have occurred in regions like Newcastle West over the past five years.

While working at Port Stephens Council as Communications Manager, Stephens spends some time sitting in an office, but he has an adventurous side too.

In a brave move last year Stephen decided to climb Everest with the Mark Hughes Foundation.

News Of The Area recently recorded the insects humming at sound levels well over 100 decibels at homes near Bulahdelah’s Alum Mountain.

According to cicada enthusiast Dr Nathan Emery, who is a Scientific Officer at the Australian Botanic Gardens, this level is equivalent to the sound of a chainsaw running at full speed or a rock concert.

“The males often sing in synchrony, termed a cicada chorus and this can get up to around 120 decibels,” he said.

“With prolonged exposure, this is enough to damage human hearing.”

Dr Emery said the most commonly found species in the Myall Coast and Port Stephens region include the Eastern Double Drummer, Black Prince, Red Tree-ticker,

“The ones making the loudest noise are the Eastern Double Drummers, which are also Australia’s largest cicada species,” he said.

But for anyone hoping the piercing shrill of the insect’s mating song will soon end, Dr Emery told News Of The Area the final chorus of the season is still some time away.

“Some of the larger species, such as the Green Grocer and Eastern Double Drummer will start to decline in numbers throughout January,” he said.

“However, others like the Black Prince and Floury Baker may persist up to March or April.”

Dr Emery said there was also a large emergence of the little herbivores in NSW back in 2010.

Talented Terrace quilter

A SIGN for $10 quilting classes in the window of Terrace Quilting kicked off a new love for Sammy O’Grady.

Sammy is a very passionate and talented young person who enjoys and shows talent in art and craft.

One of her goals in life is to participate in these activities.

It is just one of the many ways that Sammy participates and engages with her community.

Over the last year Sammy has done a variety of art classes in the Newcastle and Maitland area.

A lot of her community access is around Raymond Terrace, where she first noticed the sign at Terrace Quilting.

Sammy has been

attending every Wednesday for four hours over the past six weeks.

Leanne, the owner of Terrace Quilting, has been a great support, spending the first lesson sitting with Sammy providing her with one on one training to show her what to do, explaining the operation of the sewing machine.

Sammy was shown a variety of fabrics and picked colours/patterns she wanted.

Each lesson Sammy was supported to watch and then follow Leanne’s demonstrations by her My Goal Support Worker.

Leanne assisted Sammy with hand stitching to complete the quilt.

Sammy has enjoyed the classes and was truly welcomed and supported by

Leanne who went above and beyond to assist Sammy with this skill.

Sammy also benefited from the group class from all the other ladies who attended the class who encouraged Sam to stay focused and motivated each lesson.

Sammy will now attend every fortnight to continue building her skills – She has chosen to make a bag next session.

Sammy is a client with My Goal Australia Pty Ltd. My Goal is a company solely focused on providing key and quality services to people with a disability in the local community.

My Goal was founded in 2016.

My Goal is a growing company that encompasses a variety of specialist disability

on nerve endings which affect my mobility and force me to currently be in a wheelchair.”

Emma is currently on her last treatment option, a treatment called vemurafenib/cobimerinin, that causes extreme reactions to the sun, among other significant side effects and pain.

If this treatment doesn’t work, Emma has been told she is out of options, and

there is nothing more they can do for her.

Emma said, “I may currently be under palliative care and writing this from my hospital bed, I may currently be in a wheelchair and this is a lot to take on at the age of 32, but I am coming out of my corner swinging.”

“I’m giving this everything I have got,” she said.

WE’VE all heard the saying ‘every dollar counts’, but there’s not many stories where the saying can hold more truth than that of Emma Dunlop.

Emma was featured in The Great Wall of China Trek Pamphlet earlier this year, after raising $72,000 for melanoma research by climbing The Great Wall Of China in September 2017 with a team of ten.

Emma has been personally fighting Melanoma for the past 3 years and it progressed sadly into stage four around 18 months ago.

Emma told News Of The Area, “I got my first clear scan in three years, back in December 2016 and sadly the celebrations only lasted five months cancer free, when a PET scan in May 2017 confirmed my cancer has returned.”

Commit to Safer Driving SHADOW Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington MP has joined with local police officers to call on drivers to commit to safer driving as their 2018 resolution.

NSW’s holiday road toll has nearly doubled in 2017 and annual road fatalities have risen for the second year in a row.

Locally, police officers from the Port Stephens Command and Highway Command have conducted almost 5,000 Random Breath Tests (RBTs) across the holiday period. Port Stephens has been fortunate to avoid any fatalities during this holiday period.

The Hunter saw over 70

road fatalities in 2017, a 70% increase on the 43 fatalities recorded in 2014.

A breakdown of figures by council area show that Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens record the highest number of road fatalities. The most recent figures from 2016 recorded ten fatalities in both Newcastle, and Port Stephens, with 9 in Lake Macquarie.

Across the state, 250,000 speeding fines were issued in 2017, equating to more than 680 speeding infringements each and every day.

Ms Washington said, “I am joining our local police to call on the residents of Port Stephens and the Hunter

to commit to safer driving as their 2018 New Year resolution.”

“Tragically, road deaths have doubled across NSW this year and no-one wants to see a repeat of that again this year.”

“So it’s time for all of us to take the challenge to be a safer driver this year.”

“We can all do better – we can put down our phones, drive at the speed limit and be respectful to other road users.”

“The message is clear – commit to safer driving in 2018 to protect not just yourself and your family, but other families travelling on our roads,” she said.

Heat sags Powerlines WITH extreme temperatures on the radar this summer, energy companies are reminding the public to stay alert when working near the electricity network as heat can alter the height of overhead powerlines.

Essential Energy Brendon Neyland, told News Of The Area, “While powerlines were designed for the climatic conditions, weather extremes could have an impact and he urged people to look up and live.”

“Machine operators,

construction workers and tradespeople should be aware that prolonged heat can cause powerlines to sag significantly and reduce line clearance heights from the ground,” Brendon said.

Keeping a three metre clearance between powerlines and machinery is recommended when working near the electricity network and monitoring throughout the day for changes in conditions.

“In regional NSW many powerlines are strung across

long spans and these can be more susceptible to sway in high winds,” Brendon added.

“If overhead powerlines appear to be damaged, sagging or have fallen to the ground, keep a minimum eight metres clear.”

Remember that electricity can arc to nearby objects and keep your distance from anything that may be in contact with the powerline, such as fences or trees, as they can serve as conductors.

I have gained about seven kilograms over Christmas. Any clues on how I can lose the weight quickly?

Mrs CV, Raymond Terrace MRS CV, as I am typing this, I’m polishing off the last of the hazelnut nougat I was given for Christmas, even though I promised myself I would stick to salads and green smoothies for the next six months in order to make up for the communal gluttony that occurred at my place over the festive season.

It is now all a blur of deep-fried camembert, basil and pistachio dip, potato salad with full cream mayonnaise, chocolate mousse, rum balls, red wine, white wine, brunch, lunch and midnight snacks (and that was just Boxing Day).

We all fall into a trap at this time of year, and that trap is thinking that we will pace ourselves over the Christmas period, eat in moderation, exercise, and start the New Year as svelte, radiant, well-rested individuals.

Instead we fall into a food coma and we can’t exercise because even our stretchy activewear isn’t quite that stretchy and we all know that crop tops and muffin tops aren’t a fashion statement any of us would like to emulate.

The most exercise we have done is to float around on blow-up peacocks and pull a couple of Bon Bons.

Heck, even if I could see my shoelaces, I doubt I’d have the energy to actually tie them up. All this eating and nanna napping is exhausting.

Acceptance is the first step, Mrs CV. There’s no point feeling bad about it. You simply have to let go of the past and embrace the future.

It seems pointless to change things midweek, so as of next Monday, I want you to ask yourself this question each time you come across a tempting treat: “Should I put this inside me?” Nine times out of ten, the answer will be no. In fact, the question could extend beyond food and keep you away from doomed relationships and emergency rooms. Food for thought.

The Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu style of martial arts is heavily based on the street-practical and real life situations of self defence, rather than considering or being restricted to any rulebased (sport/competition) fighting.

“For today’s person interested in learning martial arts, Koryu Uchinadi is not sports based. In other words, the training does not primarily focus on preparing (you) for competition,” Mr King said.

“Our training prepares the student for dealing with unwarranted acts of aggression in the real world.

In particular for situations where safely exiting is not always an option.”

First year for United Dance

UNITED Dance located in Raymond Terrace celebrated their first year in town with their very first end of year showcase, with over twenty talented and beautiful two to five year old Munchkin Magic dancers.

Bella Wade, aged four years old, was awarded Most Promising Munchkin at the 2017 end of year showcase.

She was chosen for this inaugural honour for her thriving talent, and her ongoing encouragement and sportsmanship shown throughout the year.

Bella first started dancing at United Dance Maitland when she was only 2 years

old.

She started in the baby boppers mums and bubs class, where they learn basic rhythm and coordination.

Bella has steadily grown and improved to become an outstanding dancer, beautiful both inside and out.

Principal Maddi Price, who is a mere 23 years old, told News Of The Area, “Bella’s dancing has improved and her talent has really blossomed in 2017.”

“She really deserved the Most Promising Munchkin award, because she is constantly coming to class ready and eager to learn new things and to have lots of fun with her friends.”

Holiday Fishing Competition

THE Annual Bob Royal whiting fishing competition has been expanded this year to include flathead as the targeted species for those entering the adult

section.

Now in its fourth year, the event was named after the late Bob Royal,a tireless community worker.

Active Kids Voucher

JANUARY 2018 has brought about the official opening of the Active Kids Voucher program for New South Wales school students.

The voucher is available to all school aged students in New South Wales, and is not means tested.

Families will multiple children are not restricted with one voucher per family, they may apply for each and every student enrolled in school.

The Active Kids rebate will be available from the NSW Government via a voucher system to all schoolaged children who enrol in, or register for sport and fitness activities to cover participation costs.

This program will be run annually for the next four years.

Kimberly Cox, owner and operator of Crossfit Deck in Raymond Terrace, told News Of The Area “We registered back in September with the hopes of having most of the CrossFit boxes (gyms) around being recognised for the positive influence our strong communities can have on our local families.”

“With most of our CrossFit Kids already watching Mum or Dad be the best versions of themselves by choosing to be healthier in fitness and food choices for life, the children learn to have the same focus and also the same love of fitness being fun, rewarding and engaging.”

The initiative will reduce the barriers to participation and help change the physical activity behaviours of children and young people in NSW. The voucher can be used for registration or membership fees for afterschool, weekend sport and structured physical activity programs, including swimming lessons, from a wide range of providers.
