Part of this involves giving your loved ones a beautifully wrapped Christmas present.

Unfortunately, that isn’t a job a lot of us look forward to nor are very good at.

So, for those of us who end up using more sticky tape than paper, we have the answer.

Among the successful grant recipients are projects for local schools, sports clubs, community groups and the SES: Port Stephens Cricket Club will receive $20,000 to purchase a new pitch roller, Port Stephens SES will receive $10,000 to construct a community

sandbagging facility, Irrawang High School P&C Association will receive $42,200 to install air conditioning in the school hall, Irrawang Public School P&C Association will receive $11,948 to refurbish the Thou-Walla Centre, Raymond Terrace & Districts Historical Society Inc. will receive $16,454 to upgrade their kitchen and Hinton and District Tennis Club Inc. will receive $10,500 to install a remote booking and locking system.

An additional $188,898 was also

awarded to ten other projects across Port Stephens, with a total of $300,000 awarded to 16 projects within the electorate.

Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “I’m proud to be able to support these incredible local community groups with this grassroots funding.”

“These grants will deliver new community infrastructure in and around Raymond Terrace and help pay for muchneeded improvements to our local schools, sports

community facilities and sporting centres.

They also have a proud history of being there when it matters, especially during natural disasters and other emergencies as well as much needed medical research.

For example, Lions were involved in the development of the bionic ear and the cervical cancer vaccine, Gardisil.

Both advances have changed, and will change, many lives both here and abroad.

Air Con for Irrawang CHRISTMAS has come early for Irrawang High School, with staff, students and parents looking forward to no longer having to suffer through the summer months following a $42,200 grant awarded by local Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, to purchase and install air conditioning for the school hall.

The Irrawang High School Community Hall is used frequently by the school community, as well as other local schools and community groups, for various school and community events and functions.

During the summer months, it is not uncommon for staff, students and parents to sit in the hall with temperatures

upwards of 35 degrees.

The grant, which will allow the P&C to purchase and install a large air conditioning unit, will be sourced through the NSW Community Building Partnership program which provides funds for new and improved community infrastructure.

The P&C will contribute half of the $90,000 cost of the unit with money fundraised by the school community.

Among the 16 successful grant recipients in Port Stephens are projects for five local schools, two preschools, four sporting clubs and five other community organisations including the Port Stephens SES. The Community Building

Partnership grant program is provided by the NSW Government each year.

Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “I’m pleased to be able to support Irrawang High School with this funding.

“It’s a terrific school which is on the up and up, but the infrastructure is in need of some love.”

“I congratulate the hardworking P&C who have fought for this funding for so long and fundraised half of money already,” she said.

Cassie Collins, Vice President, Irrawang High School P&C told News Of The Area, “I’m so pleased that the P&C has received this grant funding.”

“The school community

has been crying out for air conditioning in the school hall for years.”

“With so many activities

in modern day grief and loss, I walked away with some thoughts on dealing with grief, not limited to Christmas, for the entire grieving process.

There is no set time for grieving to finish, grief can take years if not decades to come to terms with.

According to Ms Zagdanski, “You are the

expert on your grief.”

There is no timeline, no right or wrong way and sometimes well-meaning family and friends may say, “Move on, but where to?”

JUST when you were thinking that Christmas is a highly commercialized venture, one local resident has managed to change the mindset of his neighbours and friends.

During last week, Paul “Santa” Scully and his trusty helper, Peter “Elf” Sharp took to the streets delivering the best homemade Christmas Puddings to neighbours and friends.

Paul told News of the Area, “I generally make over thirty Christmas Puddings each year and enjoy handing them out to my neighbours and friends to enjoy over the Christmas Festive Season.”

“I really love Christmas and by giving and sharing with my neighbours and friends, it gives me great pleasure when they open their front

door to be presented with a homemade treasure,” Paul added.

This year, Santa and his helper dressed for the occasion, and instead of pulling a sleigh, they improvised and decorated a wheelbarrow and filled the

barrow to the brim with the yet to be tasted sumptuous Christmas Puddings.

No doubt there were a few refreshments required before they set off on their journey and a few more refreshments were offered along the way.

Mrs LC, Soldiers Point Dear Mrs LC, I’M not sure what your issue is with this fine Christmas tradition. What could be more enjoyable than standing in a queue that spans the entire circumference of the local food court with other screaming . . . I mean smiling mums and dads and their well-behaved offspring, all waiting patiently for their special time with the man in red?

What could possibly bring more goodwill than joining together as babies howl at being placed on a strange man’s lap, photographers dance with stuffed toys to encourage the money shot, mums wipe spittle from toddlers and dads discuss how much they love forking out for cellophane, solar lights, baubles, LOL Surprise toys, hams, turkeys, prawns, cherries, drones, Lego sets, remote control cars with no batteries, trampolines that need an engineering degree to set up, with stealth, on Christmas Eve, and those boxes of toilet rolls wrapped in gold paper that contain a paper hat and a choking hazard (better known as Bon Bons).

My children have always been forced to endure the great tradition of a Santa photo, particularly now they are surly teenagers. The one exception was last year when the queue was worse than every other year combined. Thankfully, the bearded man in the queue behind me had a similar body mass index to jolly old Mr Claus. I asked him to don one of the Santa hats I had in my shopping trolley, took a quick snap with my IPhone, and tried to ignore my kids as they whined “how embarrassing” all the way home.

I do believe, Mrs LC, that the answer could be a new innovation that just occurred to me. Let’s call it the Santa Line Sitter (SLS). It involves paying obliging teenagers $10 to babysit your children until they reach position number two in the Santa queue. They’ll be happy, because they can stay glued to their devices, and you can do all your Christmas shopping. A quick text message notification and you can casually return to the queue, get the photo (or the 15 photos, digital pic, fridge magnets, postcards and Christmas mug upsize version) and be off on your merry way. The teenagers could be rated via an app, to make sure they are fine, upstanding queue sitters. I think, with a bit of tweaking, it’s a winner.

Drone Camp for Girls

BREAKING stereotypes for young girls is a wonderful thing, and there’s a program coming to Port Stephens that is smashing stereotypes out of the park, and encouraging girls to join a traditionally male dominated field.

The ‘ME’ Program is hosting two ‘camps’ in the January school holidays for girls to learn drone piloting.

The two day Sheflies (she-

flies) events will be held at two Hunter locations - PCYC Port Stephens and Hunter School of Performing Arts.

The camps will teach girls; manual flight tutorial and practice (hands-on), scenario based flight practice activities (hands-on), real-life applications of drone technology, Australian regulations, safety considerations and flight briefing.

Girls will work in teams of three throughout the sessions

and swap between the roles of Pilot in Charge, Co-Pilot, and Air Traffic Controller.

Girls in the program will learn by undertaking ‘real life’ scenarios.

The Port Stephens camp will take place on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 January 2018, from 8.30am—4pm each day at PCYC Port Stephens (7 Austral Street, Nelson Bay).

The course will then run again in Newcastle on Wednesday 17 and Thursday q The girls will work in small groups to complete tasks and learn about the industry.

RAYMOND TERRACE News Of The Area 18 January 2018 from 8.30am – 4pm each day in the Bini shell hall at Hunter School of Performing Arts (Broadmeadow Road, Broadmeadow).

The course costs only $50 total per person, which includes the two day drone course, lunch and snacks.

Jackie Dujmovic from the Sheflies program told News Of The Area, “This program will be the first event of its kind in NSW and is being sponsored by regional development Hunter and Me Program.”

“It will be a great opportunity for local girls to learn more about this growing industry, and to immerse themselves in two days of cementing the knowledge in their heads that they can do anything they put their mind to that interests them.”

“Sheflies generates conversation around gender equality in STEM, using the world of drones to inspire and provide a platform for change to occur,” she said.

Jarrod tells his family story

By Rachael VAUGHAN ONE of Port Stephens’ own is one of thirty-eight regional young Australians to be announced as the winners of the ABC’s Heywire Storytelling competition.

Jarrod Sansom was selected for his story about his family, and their one hundred year plus history on the family property that is now within the Redzone, and the heartbreaking developments in recent years.

The Heywire competition has been running for over twenty years, and is a place for regional and rural young people aged 16 – 22, to share their unique stories, and to have their voices heard.

The winners collectively show the true Australia, a diverse collection of people

from all walks of life, all with different backgrounds, experiences, hopes and dreams, Jarrod’s story impressed the judges with his raw and passionate story telling of his rich childhood on the family farm, their eventual sale of the property, and now the news that their much loved family home is, and has been for some decades, within the Redzone affected by fire fighting chemicals from the Williamtown RAAF base.

Jarrod’s family has had a string of tragedies related to Cancer, and his story speaks of the concern that this has given the family now that the stories from the Redzone are all coming to light.

One particular passage of Jarrod’s story brings forth a rush of emotion, where it tells

of the loss of his Grandfather and three of Grandfather’s siblings to the same type of stomach Cancer.

Jarrod’s story is raw, and an important one that needs to be heard as the residents of Williamtown continue their own battle to be heard by the Government.

In February, the winners will attend the Heywire Regional Youth Summit in Canberra.

During the week-long summit, the winners will meet with Members of Parliament and community leaders, to develop ideas to strengthen their communities.

Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “I will introduce Jarrod to residents in the Redzone before he goes to the summit, so he can hear straight from them what the

message they want sent to Parliament is.”

Jarrod told News Of The Area, “I wrote the story to tell a story about my upbringing, I

CHRISTMAS time is perhaps the most exciting time of the year, especially if your family and friends have little ones to share the wonder with.

Santa Claus with his sack full of toys and goodies is of course every child’s favourite and a special challenge for parents of young believers.

Trimming the tree and decorating your home can bring so much excitement and magic to the holiday season.

Where do you hide the sleigh bells that your child will hear tinkling and how do you get them off to sleep on Christmas Eve, so you can put the gifts under the tree?

Record $36,000 up for grabs for Port students PORT Stephens students have the best chance yet of receiving a $2,000 Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarship, with a record 18 scholarships up for grabs in 2018.

Fifteen businesses have generously contributed $36,000 collectively to the scholarship pool, which is the largest amount ever received.

Valued at $2,000 each, the scholarships provide financial assistance to residents from the Port Stephens Local Government Area who are starting university or TAFE in 2018.

This accomplishment has started to open more than a few doors for Jacobi.

One such opportunity was the recent Prime Gymnastics Invitational, held in Singapore,

where 500 gymnasts from Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines competed in an invitation only competition.

After the event, Jacobi came home with a bag full of medals.

Jacobi earned two bronze medals in the Floor Exercise and Balance Beam events, silver in the Uneven Bars and a gold medal in the Vault.

Those efforts combined to

earn Jacobi third place overall in the competition, which is a truly amazing achievement.

Jacobi’s mother Susan, who accompanied Jacobi overseas, said “this was an amazing experience for her to compete internationally, in addition to these new results in Singapore, last year Jacobi had great success in Las Vegas in the Lady Luck competition and came away with eight personal medals as well.”

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

News Of The Area Policy Statement The News Of The Area is an independent free community newspaper published weekly for the Great Lakes and Port Stephens communities. Currently with three separate publications titled: Myall Coast News Of The Area; Medowie & Tilligerry News Of The Area; Bay News Of The Area; Raymond Terrace News Of The Area.
