They were open 24 hours a day, operating from the Thursday before Christmas until Christmas Eve, and then again from New Year’s Day until 6 January.

The Lions Club of Raymond Terrace is very proud to be a part of the advertising campaign which features their food truck.

The Arnotts Foundation has been

supporting the Driver Reviver Program from the very start working with volunteers from various organisations at up to 220 locations across the busy holiday seasons on our roads Driver Revivers offer a free cup of hot Bushells tea, coffee, an Arnott’s biscuit and most importantly, a chance to revive so you reach your destination safe and sound.

The Raymond Terrace Lions also offered hot foods and cold sandwiches for sale.

They put the call out this year to community

groups, and welcomed volunteers from Raymond Terrace groups; Rotary, Men’s Shed, Seniors Citizens and the RSL. Baker’s Delight and Terrace meats were also valued contributors with bread donations and meat discounts.

Youth coordinator and Chair for Raymond Terrace Lions, Glenys Francis told News Of The Year, “Running driver reviver for the last 28 Years has been a massive community effort using as many community groups as we can muster.”

“The word goes out and people put their hand up.”

“The community

can continue to do the job that we do,” she said.

WINC is in desperate need of old sheets, pillowcases, towels or tea towels you haven’t needed or used for ages and won’t need any more.

Lorraine said, “We can immediately put them to very good use in providing snuggling places for baby animals.”

If you, or anyone you know can sew, WINC is also in need of a lot more pouches and liners, which are very easy to make, for small orphans.

THE extreme fire conditions and intense weather have been hard on people, but it has been disastrous for our defenceless wildlife.

WINC (Wildlife in Need of Care) has never had so many infant wildlife coming into care, and they’re running short on some things, and are hoping the community might be able to help out.

Lorraine Yudaeff, President of WINC told News Of The Area, “This season has been catastrophic for wildlife that can’t defend themselves, and WINC is doing everything it can to help them.”

“We have put the call out to the community and hope that people can go through their cupboards and see what they’re able to donate.”

“Anything is appreciated, so that we

Firies Effort FROM Page 1 over a week of continuous fire fighting, back burning and clean up, which has seen the brigade go through more than a dozen crew rotations.

A fire on Masonite Road at Tomago started off the more than week-long battle of working against extreme weather conditions.

The KBDI (Keetch-Byran Drought Index), devised to measure the likelihood of wildfire based on soil moisture and other conditions related to drought, measured Williamtown and surrounds at 150 on Sunday 14 January.

Measurement scales go from zero, meaning no drought, through to 800, reflecting extreme drought.

The fire, thought to be started by a bolt of lightning, quickly lit up the hot, dry

grass and the fire took off rapidly.

Local Brigades, had the fire under control by late Wednesday.

Crews from Medowie assisted with keeping the smouldering area under control and from reigniting, only to have the intense weather create havoc again on Friday morning.

Medowie RFB member Gavin Smith told News Of The Area, “On Friday morning, Raymond Terrace Brigade were out doing a patrol with National Parks at the Masonite road site, and Medowie got a call around midday to assist with a crew and chainsaw operator to help clear some of the smouldering logs near the fire edge.”

The weather was against them, and the fire reignited again, quickly spreading.

The small pockets of rain during the week were far

too little, and brought with them dangerous lightning that made situations worse, and the intense heat and gail force winds only added to the chaotic conditions.

Andrew Collins, Captain of Medowie Rural Fire Brigade, told News Of The Area, “Over the course of the week, we have rotated through at least a dozen Medowie crews, with more to come.”

“Medowie RFB members have worked around the clock to assist in the overall containment of this fire, with crews from all over the Lower Hunter District, strike teams from other RFS districts, National Parks and Wildlife crews and Fire & Rescue assisting with property protection.”

“We’ve had two vehicles out with the crews, with the urban pumper in the station on standby for any other incidents” he said.

The grass at the base of the power pole quickly caught alight, and Gus pulled over to do what he could to contain it.

A News Of The Area reporter just happened to be travelling close behind with her mother and son, and stopped to give assistance to Gus. The pair worked to smother the edges of the fire patch and prevent it from getting away until the fire

brigade could attend to take over.

It was wonderful to see some familiar faces of some Medowie families who also stopped to help soon after and placed calls to Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue, updating them on the situation.

Gus was worried the fire got away for a bit, but the helpers made sure it didn’t move far, with everyone safely working as a team.

AFTER a week of intense heat and the mercury hitting tops of 46 locally, the thing we needed most was rain, and the thing we needed least was lightning coming with it.

But come it did, and it brought a flash of drama with it.

A local resident from Campvale, ‘Gus’, spotted a lightning strike which came into contact with a power pole across from Finnan

Port Stephens residents were treated to some spectacular sights during this worrying time, with water being dumped on properties from the skies on by the

Erickson sky crane and the aptly named ‘VLAT’ (Very Large Air Tanker) ‘Nancy Bird’.

The Rural Fire Brigade wish to remind everyone to

It goes to show just how quickly a fire can happen, at a moments notice.

Our reporter noticed on the way home that the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade

had also been called out, this time to a fire on Masonite Road which, at time of print, still continues to flare up.

Several crews from neighbouring towns are currently rendering assistance to our local brigades.

Summer, and this heat, is far from over.

PORT Stephens Cultural Plan 2015 – 2018 provides Council and the community with a strategy that enables resources to be prioritised and integrated into Council’s future strategic plans to build a healthy art and cultural community.

The Cultural Plan aligns with cultural planning directions identified at Federal and NSW levels including strategies that encourages residents to have an increased participation in arts and culture, strengthening the cultural sectors capacity and celebrating its cultural diversity.

The aim of the plan is to connect through the Port Stephens community to build a vibrant and sustainable cultural life, which values the potential of the area’s culture, distinct local characteristics and collective possibilities.

One key part of the plan is to recognise the cultural zones Port Stephens could be divided into.

The proposed zones are in the western part of the region the Rural Zone, a History Zone around Raymond Terrace, Life on the River, Estuary Living, Coastal Village centred around Nelson Bay, Surfing Mecca at One Mile and Birubi Beach, Grow Your Own centred around Medowie, Quiet Coastal Gateway of Fern Bay and its surrounds and the Aspirational Industry around Tomago with the proposed zones covering the entire LGA. Stephen Crowe of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Creating a unique sense of place in towns and suburbs across Port Stephens is a challenge that Council is very keen to tackle.

He believes that public art is one very effective way to

achieve that.

“What we are currently doing is working with local communities to establish cultural zones. These zones will help us to find the most appropriate style of art for each area.

“We know that each part of our local government area has its own identity and each community has a different view about what makes their space unique.” he said.

Council is looking to identify places for the themed public art to be sited, and they are asking members of the community to complete the online survey by 5 February at http:// haveyoursay.portstephens. nsw.gov.au/culture-portstephens which will see the public art installations respond to the needs and wants of the community, becoming something that each community will truly embrace.

My boyfriend bought me a puppy for my birthday. I was about to break up with him, but the puppy is really cute and I don’t have the heart to do it now.

Miss KL, Medowie WELL, Miss KL, this is a conundrum on a number of levels. To start with, and I am being deadly serious here, you should never buy anyone a pet for a present. Pets are something that require careful consideration, adequate shelter and fencing, and a healthy bank account.

It is not just the initial outlay, it is the ongoing maintenance: tick treatments, worming, bathing and grooming, replacing the twelve chooks down the road that your dog decided to maul, relining the wall on your rental property after your dog (which is prohibited under your rental agreement) chewed a dog-shaped hole through it, and so on. Your boyfriend did a wellintentioned, but silly thing.

Next is the issue of being stuck with this guy because of a dog. Have you read Careful, He Might Hear You or watched Kramer vs Kramer?

Your life could become just like that. I sincerely hope you have both written a prenuptial agreement (or in this case a prepuptial agreement). There are important things to consider when you inevitably part ways. Who will continue the puppy obedience sessions?

Who will pay for the dog’s needs in winter (puppy coat, blanket, raincoat and so on)? Will you split custody 50/50, or will one of you have to pay dog support? What if you are deemed to be unfit parents? What if, heaven forbid, the dog knocks up another dog and you are left with a litter of pit-bull-cross-poodle pups and you start to look like one of those families from The Jerry Springer Show?

Just like those first weeks with a new boyfriend, early days with a pup are full of slobbery kisses, cute photos, gourmet meals and walks along the beach. The long haul, however, is quite a different story. I hope you’re up for it, Miss KL. Pups, like boyfriends, can eventually grow into different beasts altogether.

Whincup opens Bunnings Store

Newcastle duo ViAgro will hit the stage from 8:30pm on Saturday 20 January.

enough to have heard them, ViAgro are a duo of brothers that divide a drum kit between its two members whilst singing and playing guitars at the same time.

Palzy Daivah on vocals, bass and cymbals and Adem Daivah on vocals, guitar, kick and snare drums.

The end result of this impressive split is a full sounding rock band show cleverly pulled off by only two people.

“A lot of bands lay claim to being different, but over our ten year existence we’ve yet to come across or even hear of another band that does what, looks or sounds like we do,” continues Palzy.

With over 1500 shows performed, ViAgro have also supported The Screaming Jets and toured with The

Angels on their 2014 40th Anniversary tour.

Such is the talent of the Raymond Terrace ten-year-old, he is on track to being able to emulate any one of his soccer idols. English Premier League club West Ham United certainly think so.

The London club have

extended an invitation to Xander to attend their invitation only Development Camp in the UK. The camp includes several training sessions conducted by top clubs, including West Ham, as well as a tour and session of England FA National Training Centre at St Georges Park.

This is an incredible opportunity for anyone, let alone a soon to be eleven-yearold.

However, it is important to point out that this invitation has come along thanks to years of hard work and sacrifice.

After beginning his football ventures as a seven-year-old, Xander won a position in the Hunter Valley Hawks squad based in Cessnock.

This placement required Xander to be driven to Cessnock twice a week to train, plus an additional session at Thornton for goalkeeper training.

Xander’s skill and aptitude with the Hawks helped him earn a place in the Newcastle SAP Under 10 and Under 11 squads.

There’s no doubt about it, he’s a talent.

Masters Swimming Carnival

MASTERS Swimming New South Wales commenced their 2018 season last weekend at Raymond Terrace, with a gala dinner Saturday night and a day of competition on Sunday at the Lakeside Leisure Centre.

The dinner, made possible by a state government grant to NSW Masters Swimming, was provided by Raymond Terrace Masters Club and held in the Rotunda at Riverside Park.

Officials from all over the state enjoyed seafood and chicken salads, among other delicious offerings, making the dinner a resounding success in a beautiful setting by the river.

Masters Swimming differs from traditional swimming meets, where the competitors race against each other in direct competition.

The Masters competitors compete against themselves in a Point Score system through the day that counts towards their season tally.

There are many reasons to join the club including chasing a healthier and more active lifestyle, working towards reaching a personal goal, or purely just for the social aspect.

The Raymond Terrace meet is a great example of this.

“We had over 120 participants at the carnival,” Raymond Terrace Masters Branch Treasurer Inga Kasch told News Of The Area.

To join the Masters Swimming Club, all you need to do is be over 18 years of age.

Despite the name, you don’t need to be a master of swimming at all.

And for those of you who think that something like this has passed them by, think again.

One Raymond Terrace Swimming Master is over 80 years old.

Jan Finn, the oldest member of the Raymond Terrace branch, and also an original member, still competes.

Jan doesn’t just complete locally, she also competes at an international level.

So, as you can see, it is never too late.
