By Marian SAMPSON WHEN it comes to the size of employers in the region, there is no doubt that Tomago Aluminum is one of the largest.

The organization is one that has plenty of heart and supports local groups as well as their teams.

In recent weeks Tomago Aluminium employees have banded together and donated $143,000 to local charities.

Recent changes to the workplace giving program have resulted in Tomago Aluminium’s Workplace Giving Program receiving two award wins in the national Workplace Giving Excellence Awards.

The campaign was also strongly supported by Tomago’s management, which this year generously donated an additional $25,000 to the fund.

Commenting on the generosity of Tomago Aluminium’s employees, company Chief Executive Officer, Matt Howell, said the employee-led initiative reflected the importance of giving back to the community to the Tomago workforce.

“Despite a challenging year, our employees still managed to dig deep, coming together to support the less fortunate and that is always something we will support,” Matt said.

The effort that went into the relaunch did not go unnoticed.

The Workplace Giving Program has donated $143,000 to local charities with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and four other groups set for a financial windfall.

From a record pool of $143,000, the helicopter rescue service received $75,000 and the remaining $68,000 will be split between four local charities - Ronald McDonald House, Survivor’s R Us, Cancer Research (HMRI) and Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary.

“We are part of a great community and we like adding to that community spirit,” she said.

The CLC offers courses in Agribusiness, Career Pathways, Creative Design Ideation, Health and Wellbeing and Community Services, Infrastructure, Energy and Construction, Innovative Manufacturing Robotics and Science, Technology and Business, and Tourism and Experience Services.

For locals wishing to gain further education the facility will provide training on the peninsula saving students from travelling to Newcastle to access courses.

Celebrating the contribution of ADF Reservists

THE community of Port Stephens is very connected to the Australian Defence Force.

We are home to the RAAF Base at Williamtown and served as a base for the war in the Pacific during World War II. We have veterans from the war in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan as well as those who have served in peacekeeping in East Timor and other nations across the world.

Many of those who have served full time go on to give their time as reservists but not all ADF reservists have served in a full time capacity.

Servicemen and women are a part of the community's DNA. This month the Armed Forces celebrated Reserve Forces Day, a day to recognise the vital role of those who have served our nation in the Navy, Army and Air Force through the Australian De-

fence Force Reserves.

Reserve Forces Day has been marked annually since it was first officially recognised in 1998.

Of great note is the impact that the reserve forces have played during the Black Summer Bushfires and COVID-19.

Secretary of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Liz Cosson AM CSC said that these brave men and women have given selflessly to serve our nation, in times of war, conflict, peacekeeping operations, national disasters and emergencies.

“Reserve Forces have long been an integral part of our Australian Defence Force.

“They have proudly served alongside our fulltime members and continue to do so when called upon,” Ms Cosson said.

“Over the last 12 months, reservists have been involved in 18 operations both domestically and overseas which saw around 2,500 deployed on domestic operations, in-

cluding Operation COVID-19 Assist and Operation NSW Flood Assist.”

It is important to acknowledge the efforts of Reservists, who when serving, put their lives and often careers on hold to ensure the safety of our nation.

“Our Reservists should be thanked for their dedication,

along with their families and employers, as they often find themselves answering the call to serve at very short notice, as has been evident with the COVID-19 response,” Ms Cosson said.

“On Reserve Forces Day, I encourage all Australians to take the time to remember the service and sacrifice

of these dedicated men and women."

LONG time residents of Lemon Tree Passage will well remember the old family home of the Doyles.

It was situated at the end of Cook Pde and sat up on wooden piers.

Some thirty years ago a humble home handyman was cross bracing the piers as the derelict house was getting a distinct lean to it and was threatened with collapse.

It was here that he discovered an open tin chest with documents and photos littering the ground.

These found their way to local historian Jean Truebridge who put them all together and a fascinating paper trail involving a distinguished doctor, the Governor of Queensland and the author of 'Sherlock Holmes' began to emerge.

Our story begins with the Boer War where two cousins, Doctors AA and AC Doyle, see service as medical officers in South Africa.

After the conflict they go their separate ways, with AC Doyle becoming a famous author.

He is best remembered for his series of 'Sherlock Holmes' books where a super sleuth

The other doctor, AA Doyle FRCS, distinguished himself in Roma, Queensland and later in Brisbane as a specialist.

Another doctor enters the paper trail in the form of Sir William McGregor GCMC, CB, AM, FRSGC, the Governor of Queensland who became firm friends with Dr AA Doyle.

The author, now Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, met up with Dr Doyle on his Australian tour in 1920.

Dr Doyle spent his twilight years with his son Ellis (Barney) in Lemon Tree Passage and cared for the handful of residents who occupied the tiny fishing village at that time.

Signed pictures of both Conan Doyle and William Mc Gregor were found amongst the contents of the derelict house.

The late Jimmy Rooke told the story of how his mother took her sickly baby to see Dr Doyle.

He advised her to get a cow and nourish Jimmy with the fresh milk.

This she did.

Jimmy survived, but the cow died.

Fight To Save 109 Foreshore Drive

THE block of land at 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay was one which the community always thought was a park.

It wasn’t until part way through the fight to win back the parcel of land sold within the Mambo Wanda Wetlands that the community that was fighting hard to save koala habitat realised that their challenge was about to double.

It had become apparent that some members of Council wanted to sell off the prime block of land that had always been used as a public park and a wildlife corridor.

Environmentalists and those that have been fighting to save the wetlands and surrounding parklands are outraged protecting this land was not on the Councillors agenda at a recent Council meeting.

One advocate for the environment who volunteers with the local Landcare Group stated, “We haven’t even started here yet.”

The message is clear: the community will fight hard against a sell off of this waterfront land, which is a wildlife corridor.

Mayoral Candidate for Port Stephens Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “How many times has this been in front of the Council now?

“Councillor Nell has tried

relentlessly to have this land classified as Community Land, and yet it still falls on deaf ears.

“Only councillors Nell and Arnott are listening to the community.

“Council is willing to sell this and hope to get about $1.5 million to put towards the multi million dollar proposed Tomaree Sports

Complex upgrades, at the expense of community usage of the land, community desires for the land, and not to mention the green corridor for koala's and other wildlife.

“When will they stop and listen?,” she asked.

Should the small block be sold it is inevitable that at least one of the large trees on the border of the site which

has reportedly been seen with koalas in residence will be cut down.

Members of the group that helped to save the Mambo Wanda Wetlands are asking all members of the community to contact their elected representatives and to let them know how they feel about selling off this community land.

All NSW residents over the age of eighteen are eligible for the scheme and will receive four vouchers: two $25 dining vouchers that are to be used at hospitality venues or takeaway, and two $25 discover vouchers for use on recreational activities such as zoos, cinemas, bowling, tours or concerts.

All Abilities Park For Anna Bay

THERE’S a group of people who have been tenacious in their efforts to deliver at the Anna Bay All Abilities Park.

Kelly Hammond has been part of the group from the beginning, and she is not only passionate and driven but dogged in her continued advocacy for this project to go ahead for the benefit of Anna Bay. Recently Kelly Hammond and Dave Sams met with Council staff at the Anna Bay Recreational Playground.

During the visit both Kelly and Dave were delighted to walk the staff through the ideas that the community has for the site.

Kelly Hammond told News Of The Area, “I was delighted to walk staff over and put forward ideas generated from the community for the site.”

She is keen to see increased funding for the project as well as a plan to get the All Abilities Playground delivered for the community.

Kelly believes that the park will eventually become a favourite park not only for locals but one which sits high

on things to do for families visiting the region.

Anna Bay has much to offer not only residents but tourists as well and Kelly believes that smart investment in infrastructure which appeals to families and residents will see facilities delivered which are a win-win for the community as a whole.

Martin said Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland Newcastle and Port Stephens Councils have all adopted the Natural Disasters Clause to support homeowners dealing with the aftermath of a flood or fire.

“This new clause will allow councils to approve appropriate applications to repair or rebuild homes even if planning rules have changed since their home was originally built,” Mr Martin said.

“This new provision makes it a little bit easier for homeowners to get back on their feet after losing their home by getting rid of the barriers to rebuilding and help them save time and money.”

Tilligerry residents seek answers

By Geoff WALKER CONCERNED Tilligerry residents can't fathom how their new police station came to be sited on the side of a hill in Lemon Tree Passage, rather than adjoining the existing emergency services facilities at Tanilba Bay. To understand the community’s frustration and anger, we turn to Doreen Bradley OAM, a 50-year campaigner on local policing issues.

“Over the years we have had numerous community meetings with senior police and government representatives,” she said.

“It was our understanding that a new station would be built on site beside our q

ambulance and fire stations at Tanilba Bay,” she stated.

“If anybody suggested that the government would buy an old house in Lemon Tree Passage, demolish it and dump a prefabricated 'dog box' off the back of a truck on the site, they would have been run out of town!” she added.

Doreen suggested that NSW Police owed the local community a debt of gratitude for their collaboration on local policing issues over the years, a relationship which she says helped reduce instances of crime.

“The police service owes us just so much for making their system work.

“You see, a small group of locals campaigned to have the Port Stephens Command hived off the centralized command based in Maitland,” she said.

Local Scouts Groups Funded For Upgrades To Facilities

SCOUTS has long been an

organisation that has sup-

ported youth and assisted them to build skills, leadership and resilience.

The organisation pro-

motes healthy activities for young people and has been in Australia since 1908.

The NSW Government

has allocated $327,000 towards

the

upgrading

of

Scouts NSW facilities in the Hunter.

Locally this has includ-

ed $89,000 for Nelson Bay Scouts to repaint the outside of its hall, replace external

guttering, and remove an old

boatshed; $28,000 for Anna Bay Scout Hall to renovate

its kitchen and refurbish its bathrooms including pro-

viding disabled access; and

$21,000 for Tilligerry Scout Group to remove an old kitchen and construct a new one.

Raymond Terrace Courthouse Restored After 180 Years Of Service

FOR some a visit to Raymond Terrace Courthouse is a dark day, for others they see justice served and for even more it can be a trip through history.

Raymond Terrace has many historical buildings and sites of significance to modern history and one of these is Raymond Terrace Courthouse.

The historic courthouse has a new look in its 180th year thanks to revitalisation work on the building.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the $100,000 project recognises the value of the courthouse in the local community.

“This work is about improving the experience of court users by creating a better environment for them,” Mr Martin said.

“It was a vital opportunity to tackle general repairs and maintenance on this local landmark which has served the region for many decades.”

Work on the William Street site included painting, landscaping and lighting.

“The front lower roof, front gutters and drainage pits were also cleaned,” he said.

New South Wales Attorney General Mark Speakman said the facelift is part of a $1.3 million COVID-19 stimulus spend on priority projects to support communities.

“These upgrades create jobs in communities which were in the midst of recovery from fire or flood when the pandemic hit,” Mr Speakman said.

New QR Check-In Requirements

AS the Delta strain of COVID-19 hits the state, the NSW Government is tightening the net and increasing access to information for their teams of contact tracers.

Arguably NSW has been the gold standard when it comes to contact tracing and finding contacts prior to the COVID-19 virus spreading, however the Delta Strain has put new strains on our health system and contact tracers.

With fleeting contacts now becoming infected it is becoming imperative that the wider community is vaccinated and that we check in wherever we are.

We all check in regularly to hospitality venues and now we will simply be doing this everywhere we go for

whatever purpose.

Use of the Service NSW QR code will be mandatory at all workplaces and retail businesses from Monday 12 July.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said expanding the mandate would give NSW Health contact tracers real-time access to QR code data from a greater number of venues including supermarkets, retail stores, gyms and offices.

“This is about keeping our local customers and staff safe and getting all businesses open again as soon as possible,” Mr Martin said.

“We know the Delta variant of COVID-19 moves quickly and we must do everything we can to get it under control.

APART from rare documents and photographs, Port Stephens Family History Society has a very interesting relic which takes pride of place in its own, custom built, velvet lined box.

This 'jewel in the crown' is a fire brick stamped with the letters PSFB and the story of its manufacture dates back to the early days of last century.

Brick making from clay deposits at Pipeclay Creek near Swan Bay began in the 1880s.

They were shipped to Newcastle.

It was however found that clay deposits there made excellent fire bricks so the Port Stephens Fire Brick Company was formed and officially opened in 1915.

Fire bricks can tolerate extreme temperatures and are used to line furnaces.

The brickworks could produce some 30,000 bricks per week and it had its own rail track to a wharf where the bricks were loaded onto the company steamer.

This could carry 40,000 bricks.

As many as 20 men were employed.

A 20 metre ventilation chimney dispersed fumes from the site.

Brick making ceased in the 1920s as new clay deposits were found closer to industrial centres and production methods improved making the Pipeclay operation unviable.

Recently, documents have surfaced indicating that the local Indigenous peoples used to gather at the site for special ceremonies and it is possible that the area may be listed as culturally significant.

Businesses such as hospitality and hairdressers that were already using the NSW Government QR code system will also need to ensure staff and visitors such as maintenance workers and delivery drivers check-in, when they resume services after the lockdown period.

Hospitality businesses will now need to extend the use of the Service NSW COVID-Safe checkin to all customers including takeaway orders.

Businesses that fail to comply with the new health order requirements may be

subject to fines and in case of flagrant breaches, temporary closure orders.

“There is no excuse not to check-in everywhere you can – local businesses and customers all have a part to play to keep the community safe,” Mr Martin said.

“In the same way customers routinely check into cafes, restaurants and bars, we need them to adopt the same approach when visiting a supermarket, retail store and workplace.

“Inspectors have been asked to monitor the situation alongside the NSW Police.”

The Service NSW COVIDSafe check-in is easy for customers to use from within the Service NSW app.

There are more than 5.2 million active users of the

Service NSW app.

The data captured by the Service NSW COVID-Safe checkin is only used for the purposes of contact tracing by NSW Health.

It is deleted after 28 days.

Cliff Rescue!

THE Port Stephens SES were called out this weekend to rescue a man who had fallen from a cliff on the rocky headland of Dark Point, north of Hawks Nest.

Alysha Springett Deputy Unit Commander and Training & Coordinator of the SES Port Stephens Unit told News Of The Area, “At approximately 1:30pm, Port Stephens SES were paged to a General Land Rescue (GLR) at Hawks Nest, after a person fell from the cliffs at Dark Point Headland.”

A team of five accredited SES Rescue Operators and two 4WD Rescue vehicles attended and made their way out to the headland.

“The SES worked alongside NSW Ambulance, NSW Police and Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew to provide first aid on the casualty and move him to a safer location in preparation for a winch recovery from the rocks,” she said.

It took the combined efforts of the four agencies three hours for the casualty to be safely winched into the rescue helicopter and trans-

ported to hospital for further treatment.

The team at SES Port Stephens are hoping they make a full recovery.

The SES responds to rescues, floods, fire and events such as fallen trees.

The teams are made up of volunteers from the community that band together to help keep our community safe.

Book COVID-19 vaccines safely Scamwatch warns Australians of scam booking sites related to COVID-19 vaccines

NSW Health are issuing a caution to all wishing to book a vaccine due to a number of scam websites allegedly booking vaccines.

Scamwatch is warning Australians of scams that may attempt to gain personal information and lead to financial loss.

To avoid a vaccination scam residents are encouraged to protect themselves with the following advice.

Don’t give personal information to someone who calls you about the vaccine.

Don’t click on links in unexpected emails or text messages.

Don’t pay to get on a vaccination list – COVID-19 vaccines will be free for everyone living in Australia.

Don’t pay for early access to a vaccine as there is no early access to these vaccines.

supply a dollar figure for the next step until a decision is made about the suitability of the sand.

“I also thank the Deputy Premier and his team at the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, and the team at Mining, Exploration and Geoscience for their efforts,” Mr Crakanthorp said.

SOLDIERS Point Lawn Bowler, Matt Johnstone, won a major title at the Australian Open on the Gold Coast last week.

Matt, playing in the Pairs Competition with West Australian, Cody Packer, won a hard fought game in the Final televised live on Channel 7.

With the scores locked at twenty, all Parker played

a difficult draw shot to win the match.

The win is a boost for the Soldiers Point 1st Grade team who will compete in the NSW State Finals in September.

To qualify, the team won a close encounter beating East Maitland in the Zone play-off.

The Club will put on a coach to take players and supporters to Forster for the three day event in mid-July.

The club fielded six other Pennant teams this season

with the four grade team making the zone finals but losing narrowly.

Soldiers Point are confident of an improved showing next season.

New bowlers are welcome at Soldiers Point Bowling Club where they can receive free coaching so as to compete in this challenging sport.

4 JULY 2021 THE Final of the Club Triples was played on Sunday 4 July with the team of Leo Payne, Billy Smith and Terry Smith lining up against the combination of Dean Ward, Dick Hadley and Adam Clements.

The match was fairly even throughout with Terry Smith playing some

quality Skippers bowls to keep his team in the match.

It was the Adam Clements team that prevailed however, and they claimed the title with a 24-18 shots win.

An entertaining game applauded by the spectators watching.

THE Thompson Trophy is the Nelson Bay Croquet Club’s annual golf croquet singles competition which is played in three grades based on handicap.

The A Grade competition for handicaps -6 to 6 was played on Sunday 17 June 2021.

A clear, bright winter’s day greeted the six contestants: Trevor Black, Derek Bull, Barrie Carter, Peter Gordon, Cheryl Lloyd and Sandy Tawa.

The competition was played as a single round-robin with each player playing five games.

After four rounds, Sandy Tawa and Trevor Black were level on three wins each and were drawn to play each other in the final round – the CONTINUED Page 16
