Climate Change Impacts Local Fauna and Flora

LAST year was a year like no other.

Bushfires, floods, cyclones, severe weather events and we live in a world that is losing species fast.

Locally the most iconic species under threat, but there are other species that we simply don’t see.

The ones living in our oceans are also impacted by climate change.

So too is our local plantlife.

The Great Barrier Reef is under threat, so too are our local environments.

While we have seen an increase in the number of whales in our region other species like turtles are under threat.

Photo by Marian Sampson. and the Charity Sea Shelter which cares for injured sea life, told News Of The Area, “The ocean has been playing a huge part in slowing down global climate change by removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere in large amounts.

“However, ocean research shows that the CO2 absorbed by the ocean is causing the ocean to become acidic, working as a sink in what is called ocean acidification.

“This has already begun having mass negative effects on

marine life that need calcium to create shells; particularly clams, mussels, coral reefs, and small sea snails, which are having difficulty creating and maintaining shells in increasingly acidic waters.”

Ms Pereira said, “This is

especially frightening for the tiny animals that support so many large ones like krill and plankton, called terrapods, who’s calcium structures have begun to dissolve.

“Ocean acidification is just one of many issues impacting

the ocean such as salinity changes, temperature changes and loss of the reflective ice cover.

“Global action is urgently needed right now to turn it around for the ocean and planet Earth,” Ms Pereira said.

Federal Government amend National Anthem lyrics

IN a late night announcement on New Year’s Eve, Australia’s Federal Government announced a new amendment to the country’s National Anthem, coming into effect from 1 January.

Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, stated that Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, David Hurley, granted the Federal Government’s recommendation to change the anthem.

This change will amend the second line of Advance Australia Fair from “For we

are young and free” to the updated “For we are one and free”, recognising the culture of the Indigenous custodians of Australia.

The decision to change the National Anthem has been debated for a length of time, dating back to Prime Minister Bob Hawke in 1984 who recommended a modification to the

Governor General.

Mr Morrison said, “While Australia as a modern nation may be relatively young, our country’s story is ancient, as are the stories of the many First Nations peoples whose stewardship we rightly acknowledge and respect.”

The announcement was met by appreciative

responses, including Ian Hamm, First Nations Foundation chairman, and a Yorta Yorta man who stated, “We should regard ourselves as a nation that’s bonded, as opposed to being divided, and we should recognise our Indigenous history as part of our Australian history.”

“Particularly koalas, who are vulnerable in the wild due to the lack of and continued destruction of their habitat by development, natural disasters − like fires – and injuries from

With the year drawing to a close, Australians are reminded of the fires that greeted 2020 across the country, with Latitude One itself being impacted by the fire that sparked behind the community in April − burning

through 250 hectares of bushland.

Latty the koala’s miracle recovery journey THE recovery of an orphan koala joey at Port Stephens Koalas has brought hope, as the local community remembers the devastating impact of the 2019−2020 Black Summer bushfires on our communities and native wildlife.

Nifty Latty – affectionately known as Latty − was found in June 2020 at Latitude One by Ingenia Lifestyle by a Newcastle University researcher.

Alone and without her mother, the researcher reported his sighting to the local Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary. Latty is approximately 12 months old and while the story behind how she ended up alone is not fully known, for locals she has been a strong symbol of the devastation to our local flora and fauna from the bushfires.

After sightings of Latty were reported, Latitude One resident and Port Stephens Koalas volunteer, Pam Churchman, was tasked with keeping a close watch on Latty until she could be rescued and

Latitude One. “We don’t know if Latty lost her mother and her home in the bushfires, but she represents hope at this time of the year. “The residents are so relieved that she was found and being cared for – they feel a special connection since she was found at our own community.

“While she still has a while to go, seeing little Latty successfully treated for Chlamydia and receiving the care she needs to survive has been like our little Christmas miracle at Latitude One,” Ms Richardson said.

“We’ve sponsored her through Port Stephens Koalas as a community so that we can continue to contribute to her health and wellbeing.”

Analysts believe that as many as 5,000 koalas are likely to have been killed by the bushfires last year in New South Wales alone, a significant proportion of an already dwindling population.

Helping restore Norm Bassan MBE Lions Memorial Monument

LOCAL Lions Clubs continue to work tirelessly throughout the region and one has recently made an amazing contribution to the community of Stockton.

The Lion Club of Mayfield Waratah Blind & Vision Impaired Inc, has been conducting an annual Christmas Raffle in Stockton for quite a number of years.

Again, this recent Festive Season, the wonderful generosity of the people of Stockton community and visitors to the raffle was absolutely magnificent.

All proceeds will go toward the restoration of the Norm Bassan MBE Lions Memorial Monument in Pirate Point Park, at 1 Maitland Street, Stockton beside the Port of Newcastle.

Stockton Lions Park was officially opened on Saturday 11 January 1975 by Lions District Governor Dick Robertson. The Lions above were obtained by the then President Doyne Lanham from Singleton Army Base Camp when they were no longer required.

The Lions were apparently situated at an Australian Army Camp in Malaya after World War II and later moved to Singleton in the 1960’s. The Poppet Wheel came from Rothbury Colliery and was erected as a reminder that the Stockton Colliery once existed within 400 metres of the park.

at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) with the University of NSW in Canberra, alongside her military tri-service peers.

Jessica has been working casually at the Hawks Nest Newsagency for the past 3 years and needless to say her departure will leave a large void, however the newsagency’s loss is certainly the Navy’s gain.

We wish Jessica all the very best for the future and look forward one day to seeing her in an officers uniform.

Man charged

Drugs and cash seized at Oyster Cove

A MAN faced court on Tuesday, charged with drug and property offences.

Officers from Port StephensHunter Police District were conducting patrols of Oyster Cove following reports of a grey utility undertaking dangerous driving behaviour in the area.

Police were driving along Oyster Cove Road when they located a grey Holden ute stopped on the side of the road with two men changing a tyre on the vehicle.

Officers stopped and spoke with two men – aged 20 and 25.

Following further inquiries, police conducted a search of the vehicle where they located methylamphetamine and more than $2,000 in cash – some of the notes were melted together.

The 20-year-old was arrested and taken to Nelson Bay Police Station.

He was charged with supply indictable quantity prohibited drug and deal with the proceeds of crime, as well as a breach of bail offence.

The Lemon Tree Passage man was refused bail to appeared at Newcastle Local Court (Tuesday 5 January 2021).

Worimi Man Associate Professor Kelvin Kong Takes Menzies Medallion

By Marian SAMPSON WORIMI Man Kelvin Kong has certainly made a huge difference to many in need; he is making inroads into providing excellence of care to regional and remote Indigenous communities.

Most recently Kelvin Kong has been awarded the prestigious Menzies Medallion.

Kelvin graduated from NSW University in 1999 and pursued further training in Paediatric ENT surgery.

He is also Australia’s first Aboriginal surgeon.

Associate Professor Kong was presented with the Menzies Medallion in recognition of his leadership in Aboriginal health service delivery, advocacy, and research.

(Awabakal Country) as a board certified surgeon, specializing in Paediatric & Adult Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery).

He is an active member of RACS and ASOHNS, serving

on the Indigenous Health and Fellowship Services Committees.

He is a board member of the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE).

Menzies Director Professor, Alan Cass, said he

was delighted the award was presented to someone who has made such a contribution to improving hearing outcomes for Indigenous children.

this year’s medallion. Kelvin brings passion, energy and expert skills as a surgeon and researcher to improve ear health in remote, rural and urban communities,” Prof Cass said.

“Kelvin has a strong and clear voice in advocacy to close the gap in educational and social disadvantage associated with the high prevalence of otitis media (OM) and hearing loss in Australian Indigenous children.

“In particular, Kelvin has been instrumental in raising awareness of ear health problems in the Australian community and bringing this issue to the attention of governments. His work has had a profound and measurable impact.”

A/Prof Kong is also joint chair of the Hearing for Learning Initiative; a community-based training initiative that focuses on prevention through early detection of ear issues in

young children by a locally trained and communitybased workforce.

The Menzies Medallion is the highest award offered

by Menzies School of Health Research.

Dr Kong is working on a grant funded project which will explore telehealth for ENT presentations for indigenous children, with the aim of reducing wait times for children with early childhood ear and hearing health.

Kelvin Kong’s contribution is not just recognised here, it is also being recognised internationally with his efforts recently recognised in the International Medical Publication, the Lancet, this year.

New truck for Medowie Rural Fire Brigade

CHRISTMAS arrived early for Medowie Rural Fire Brigade, when they received the keys to a brand new fire truck.

The 3,500 litre ‘Category 1’ tanker, valued at approximately $300,000, will better equip the brigade members to respond to a range of emergencies, including, but not limited to, bush and grass fires, structure fires, and motor vehicle accidents.

Deputy Captain, Peter Smith, said, “The truck is a welcome addition to the brigade replacing our old fire truck, which has protected our brigade and community well for the past 17 years.

“The most significant improvements are the enhanced safety measures on the appliance which will better protect our volunteer firefighters,” said Mr Smith.

The new tanker is part of the State Government’s investment into the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Police looking for man after Sandy Point robbery

POLICE have released a CCTV image as they continue to investigate a robbery in the Port Stephens region.

At about 10am on Thursday 10 December 2020, a man entered a shop on Sandy Point Road, Corlette, where he approached a female employee and demanded cash before leaving the scene south along Sandy Point Road towards Bagnalls Beach.

Officers attended a short time later and commenced an investigation.

As Police continue their inquiries, detectives have released an image of a man

who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He’s described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his late 30s, with a thin build and a potbelly, and a dark blond-coloured mohawk style haircut with shaved sides.

He was seen wearing a black-hooded jumper, a black t-shirt, black shoes, a black hat and sunglasses.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the Corlette area around this time or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Set across three different decades, the series follows three women – 1960s housewife Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin), 1980s socialite Simone (Lucy Liu) and modern-day lawyer Taylor (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) – who have lived in the same Pasadena mansion and are all cheated on by their respective husbands. In last week’s premiere, Beth Ann and Simone learnt about their husbands’ infidelity, while Taylor’s open marriage was tested. Tonight, Beth Ann tries to spice up her relationship, Simone turns to a friend for solace and Eli (Reid Scott, Veep) grows suspicious about Taylor.

Combining psychology, intuition and hi-tech data systems, trial consultant Jason Bull (Michael Weatherly) defies belief when it comes to courtroom success.

However, former NCIS star Weatherly pulls off the role, based on the early career of Dr Phil McGraw, with such charisma that viewers seem willing to forgive a few implausible courtroom wins. The fifth season, fast-tracked from the US, has chosen to integrate the coronavirus pandemic into its storylines, with characters wearing masks, dealing with restrictions and socially distanced jurors.

While it’s not a tactic that will work for every show, it adds fresh challenges here.

Move with Women DIABETES NSW and ACT are very excited to announce the launch of Move with Women, a free group exercise program for women (18+) of all fitness levels and backgrounds.

The program involves a one-hour group exercise session every week for nine weeks, with an additional 30 minute health education session every fortnight.

The club captain believes the impact of COVID-19 on winter sport seasons, has played a part in bringing keen players to cricket in 2020.

“In general, the fact that winter sports were heavily impacted, people were pretty keen to get out and active, so I think we benefited from that slightly.

Nick said he was proud of the

way his club adapted to changing circumstances in recent months.

“I think as a club, we kept on planning as the season would go ahead, and were very fortunate that it has.

“There have been a few changes in the way we do things, but no challenge has been insurmountable,” he said.

As well as captaining Stockton, Nick leads both the Newcastle Representative and NSW Country sides.

“I am born and bred in Stockton, I have played for Stockton all my life and for Newcastle for a long time.”

He believes the club does a good job in preparing for elite level cricket.

“I think it is a good thing to have local players playing on a representative level and that’s something we have always strived for as a club.

“We have been really lucky as a club, we have pretty much continuous representation for NSW country for

“It’s pretty rare, we have been fortunate with recruitment and have produced some really top cricketers.”

Stockton also reap the benefits of a background staff with experience at representative level.

“The club is really lucky to have David Redden as a manager,” said Nick.

“It’s not just the on field areas

where we have representation at the elite level, but also our off-field personnel.”

All things point to a strong end of season for Stockton & Northern Districts, with action resuming this weekend at Lynn Oval.

“In the Newcastle and Port Stephens region, we are pretty well placed as a sporting club.

“Things are boding well for the remainder of the season,” said Nick.

Last week my husband and I set our New Year’s Resolutions. Mine was to do at least 10,000 steps a day and eat more fruit; his was to try to be happy in his body and drink more alcohol. I just can’t see this working.

HASN’T it just! So much has happened, with so much written – by myself included – about the market. It’s fair to assume the bushfires, then Covid-19 should have sent the market plummeting, but it didn’t. Real estate in our region has enjoyed a stellar year with vendors selling quickly and strongly and buyers making their lifestyle dreams come true.

Certainly, there was a frenzy where urbanites seeking a regional (better!) lifestyle rushed to purchase, sending prices sky high as they picked up properties on or before listing day. This has now tempered, but the selling prices remain strong as buyers understand they are securing quality properties that align with their changing needs. And make no mistake, Covid-19 has seen a very real realignment of lifestyle choices.

Consequently,demand continues to outstrip supply. Because of this, I predict the market will remain buoyant well into 2021. Each of R&R’s five offices – Stroud, Gloucester, Forster, Bulahdelah and Raymond Terrace are enjoying impressive sales across residential, rural lifestyle and housing block sectors.

Welcome to 2021!

HAPPY New Year and welcome to 2021 — hopefully a better year than 2020! While the COVID-19 pandemic has made an impact on us all, I’m proud that we’ve managed to keep our community spirit alive and well.

A great example of this is the Have A Yarn project, which saw hundreds of people contributing to beautiful knitted artworks

which now decorate our communities.

My hope for 2021 is that we can carry this wonderful community spirit through with us to keep making Port Stephens an incredible place to live, work and play.

Well my answer is that I did what we all know we have to do.

Eat less, exercise more, drink more water and take care of yourself.

For me setting a goal was important, making it measurable more so.

So I looked to a weight goal mixed with measurements.

Then I looked to a strength goal – something I am still working on.

Then I set my mind to it.

At gyms across the country there are always people looking for a quick fix.

It is my experience that there is no quick fix – the only fix comes with devoted time and dedication to the goal.

Carly Taylor of iGym at Salamander Bay told News Of The Area, “It doesn’t matter what time of year it is setting goals and injecting a new routine into your daily life requires mindset, discipline, change of routine self belief and all of these things you can get hel with at iGym. “When you are looking to change, people like to use the word change but I like to use the terms commitment and changing mindset.

“Training and iGym is about teaching is about setting realistic goals, starting with midset, routine, self belief and discipline.

“Many people head to the gym early in the New Year, but it doesn’t matter what tie of year it is or what we have eaten, to achieve anything, not just at the gym but in you rlife it comes from mindset,” she said.

Creating a positive mindset means committing to the goal so sometimes it is better to set a smaller goal that you can achieve, rather than one that seems like you will need to climb Everest rather than climb Tomaree Headland.

No matter what your New Year's Resolution is for 2021, be kind to yourself and make it a SMART resolution, smart is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and

Setting Resolutions For Success

SETTING a New Years resolution can be tricky.

Firstly, you need to find a goal, one that means something to you.

Secondly, you need to make it realistic - or we all know it will be kicked to the sidewalk within a matter of days.

So what makes a good resolution?

Meditating more and increasing mental wellbeing is ranking high this year.

So too are getting fitter or losing weight.

I know it is 2 years ago that I set myself a goal and through deprivation, sweat, and hard work I have achieved the getting fitter and losing weight goal.

YOUR resolutions are admirable if not a tad boring, and I write this eating a banana and waving one arm in the air so I can trick my Fitbit into thinking I’m doing something physical. My husband is in the garden and he thinks I’m waving him in for lunch, poor misguided soul that he is.

Given the very low statistics of people actually sticking to their resolutions, I wonder why so many of us start them (with good intentions) each and every year, only to fail miserably on around January 15 and crash and burn entirely by March.

I think we all have expectations that are just a bit outside the realm of reality, particularly at the moment with mask mandates in Greater Sydney, the insular peninsular now having no choice but to stick to themselves, and major traffic jams as states once again shut their borders.

Okay, I’m going to take one of your husband’s resolutions and see if it stands up to the tried and true SMART goalsetting formula.

S – Specific – Yes, his goal is specific, to him anyway, since only he truly knows how much alcohol he drinks. Maybe he could have made it more specific by quantifying it a bit better: ‘I will drink three more beers each week, up from my current quota of 21.’

M – Measurable – He will most certainly be able to measure his increase unless he gets rolling drunk and fails to keep an adequate tally.

Achievable – I think it goes without saying that your husband has set an achievable goal. So far so good.

Realistic – Yes, unless the bottle shops close (and given the current priority list with bottle shops a close second to medical centres in the old ‘essential services checklist’, that’s unlikely).

Time framed – This needs a bit of tweaking. Is he drinking more for the entire year? For a couple of months? Until Parched March or Papal April or Light-of-day May or Immune June or Dry July or Sober October or Remember November?

Overall, I feel he is on the way to success with this resolution. In fact, I reckon while you are achieving less than 5000 steps, he’ll be slugging away on a longneck like a champion, glowing with a sense of achievement (or a bad case of Rhinophyma).

By Doug O'CONNOR AFTER a 2020 of solid recruitment and strong results, Stockton & Northern Districts Cricket Club Captain, Nick Foster, is confident his club is in the best possible position for a successful 2021.

The club went into the end of year break in second place in the Newcastle District Cricket Association.

Robert Holland Club Champions leaderboard, with all four grades having enjoyed a successful start to the season.

“I think as a club, certainly we are on an upward curve at the moment,” said Nick.

“In first grade we are doing well, we are leading the second grade and in the other two grades we are mid table.”

Nick said the club’s position of strength was based upon good off-season recruitment.
