IT has been clear over the history of Port Stephens Council, that there has been a lack of gender representation.

Since 2008, the highest number of women on the council has been two, with both the 2012 election and the 2021 election seeing only one woman elected.

Newly elected councillor Leah Anderson says she is ready to make a difference and ensure that women are encouraged to represent their community.

“I am very concerned with the balance of gender on this Council, and I can only speculate as to why.

council, due to the previous year’s performances of other councillors?” Leah told News Of The Area.

Councillor Anderson believes that perhaps women are discouraged to run due to the environment that has been created.

“If you attended or watched on webcast the last few years Council meetings you would understand why very few women would be willing to put themselves forward to run for our local Council.

“In my opinion the environment at Port Stephens Council has not been welcoming for a woman to feel comfortable in standing for election for their community,” Councillor Anderson said.

Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price said Australia’s participation in the global F-35 program continued to deliver significant benefits to the Hunter region and the broader national economy.

Minister Price said the Morrison Government had increased funding to the F-35A Industry Support Program by $60 million.

The Government has also signed an $80 million, five-year contract with BAE Systems Australia for the ongoing support of Australian F-35A operations.

“This contract with BAE will

establish sovereign maintenance and supply-chain support to the Royal Australian Air Force F-35A fleet located at RAAF Bases Williamtown in the Hunter region, and Tindal in the Northern Territory,” Minister Price said.

“It will also result in the employment of 46 BAE Systems Australia staff in the Hunter region who will provide direct, onthe-ground support to the Royal Australian Air Force fleet.”

Minister Price said the Government was determined to give more small and medium businesses the opportunity to contribute to the F-35 Program.

“The $60 million increase in funding for the Joint Strike Fighter Industry Support Program will allow Australian companies to develop new and improved

Australian businesses looking to access this funding are encouraged to review the Joint Strike Fighter Industry Support Program Guidelines and explore opportunities to contribute to this critically important defence capability.

Defence will acquire 72 F-35A Lightning II aircraft to replace the Classic Hornet fleet.

To date, 45 jets have been accepted by Australia and the full fleet is on track to be delivered by the end of 2023.

Safety reminders for the Season

IT has been two years since the 2019 fires in the Christmas holiday period that devastated not only NSW but all of Australia.

For the 2021-22 fire season, the NSW RFS are warning of increased risk of grass and crop fires in many areas which can pose a significant risk to the community.

“They start and spread quickly, impacting people, properties and infrastructure, and have a significant impact on local economies,” NSW RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers said.

Commissioner Rogers said this bushfire season it is important that we all understand our level of risk and prepare accordingly.

“Now is the time to review your plans, prepare your properties and have the conversation with your family about what you will do during a fire – talk about when you’ll leave, where you’ll go, what you’ll take and what you’ll do with your animals.” he said.

Fire and Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Paul McGuiggan said decorative lights and summer barbecues also posed a fire risk

around the home.

“Make sure you have a sufficient number of working smoke alarms throughout your home that are tested regularly and are supported by a home escape plan in case of fire,” he said.

To stay safe, residents should clean out gutters confirming no leaf material is left there.

Combustible materials should not be near houses, including piles of wood that may have been stacked up for the winter.

Gas bottles or any combustible chemicals including turpentine or paint thinners should not be stored

“Our thoughts are always with the families and friends of those who we have to help.

“We will always respond to a call for assistance, but as you could appreciate, our preference is always for everyone in our community to be safe and not require our help,” he said.

As Christmas Holidays approach, it is essential to keep following safe practices to ensure no harm to yourself or others.

"Don't overload power boards,

near or underneath houses.

Importantly, if residents leave their house or property on a day where the fire danger is extremely high, windows should be shut to ensure that embers do not come into the house.

“The experience of the 2019-20 bush fire season continues to affect many people across NSW, such as rebuilding and the mental health effects of such a devastating period and this has been compounded by the ongoing effect of COVID-19.

“Despite this, there is a need for fire agencies, land managers and the

community to work together and prepare for the inevitable return of fire conditions.

“Given this need, the NSW Rural Fire Service is focused on the delivery of a new bush fire risk planning process, with trials underway in the Hunter region.

“This new process will better inform communities and agencies about the level of bush fire risk and allow improvements in the way treatments are targeted,” Commissioner Rogers said.

This work, in conjunction with a focus on delivering a tenure blind approach to hazard complaints hopes to increase community confidence while reducing the risks.

Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue wraps up 2021

RAYMOND Terrace Fire & Rescue has had a huge year in 2021, attending a record 513 incidents at the time of writing.

For those who may not be aware, the Brigade does so much more than just tending to fires and explosions.

In 2021 alone, only 25% of calls made were for fires or explosions with many calls for action at car crashes, some of which were very serious, and others calls included rescuing a cat from a tree and a possum from a roof.

Deputy Captain Giacomo Arnott spoke to News Of The Area about the Brigade’s year.

"This year has been very busy for us and although COVID made it difficult for us to do our usual public relations activities including our Home Fire Safety Visits, we were very pleased to still be able to deliver the 2021 Santa Lolly Run on 19 December.

"Our station deals with such a variety of incidents, from house fires to car crashes, to animal rescues and spillages, and this year has been no different.

“We see it all, and we all love helping our community,” Deputy Captain Arnott said.

A NELSON Bay man had a great December after discovering an Instant Scratch-Its ticket he was given for Christmas two years ago held a $100,000 prize.

The top prize winning $5 Warm Wishes Instant Scratch-Its ticket was found languishing in an old gift bag in the linen closet.

The ticket was originally purchased at Nelson Bay Newsagency, 87 Magnus Street, Nelson Bay. The man explained why it took him so long to uncover his top prize win.

“We’ve got lots of kids in the family, so for the past few nights, we’ve been wrapping Christmas presents,” he explained.

“We’d run out of the good wrapping paper, and so my wife went into the cupboard and dug out old gift bags to use.

“This ticket was face down in the bottom of this one gift bag, so we had no idea we even had it until then,” he said.

The next morning whilst having breakfast they decided to scratch the ticket, discovering that they had won $100,000.

“We can’t believe it’s been sitting in our linen closet for two years; we’ve walked past that closet so many times, and we’ve cleaned it and had no idea there was $100,000 in it this whole time.

The couple tried to call family members to find out who had given them the ticket, but unfortunately couldn’t find the gift-giver.

“But we decided to buy all of our family a bunch of Instant Scratch-Its tickets and pop them into Christmas cards and hopefully, they have a big win, too,” the man said.

Christmas Bush Garden Club

THE Christmas Bush Garden Club, like so many other groups in Port Stephens, had setbacks because of COVID with trips cancelled and the election of office bearers delayed until November.

“The upside was that members did get to spend more time in their gardens,” said Eileen Cook, the Club’s newly elected President.

Daphne Smith, the President of the Club for the past three years, recently handed over the reins to the new Committee after reporting on activities which included trips away to the Bath House Gardens at

Oakhampton, Hunter Botanic Gardens, Gloucester Herb Garden and Permaculture Farm at Stroud.

A window of opportunity between COVID restrictions was taken for several members to open their gardens for other members to visit.

The Club is looking optimistically to the New Year and are keen to attract new women and men who love anything to do with gardening.

The Club meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 10am at the Nelson Bay Community Hall in Norburn Avenue.

The new Committee is busy mapping out the rest of the year to be full of interesting topics

at meetings with trips away and local activities planned.

Unlike many Clubs in the area, there will be a regular monthly meeting in January followed by a picnic at Pearson Park with a side visit to see a member’s lovely courtyard garden.

If you have a green thumb or would like to explore beautiful gardens in the region the Christmas Bush Garden Club offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with others who share a love of gardens and gardening.

In February the Club celebrates its 40th birthday with plans well under way for a wonderful party with a special guest speaker and presentations.

Diana Souter, Public Officer, SeaSide Singers Community Choir, is happy to inform locals that the choir is back in action once again.

“This past year or so was sadly a very quiet time for all artists but now we can happily sing and dance again,” Diane said.

“Your favourite choir, the SeaSide Singers, would not be condemned to die just because

of a little bug.

“See, we need heavy breathing to sing so we weren’t allowed to meet and practise our songs, our usual midyear extravaganza was cancelled and other planned events put on hold.”

With meetings and rehearsals allowed once more, the SeaSide Singers now are back to doing what they do best, entertaining and inspiring the community through the art of song.

“Happily now at this time we are allowed a much needed get together for friendship and support of each other and we enjoyed catching up at a Christmas party last Tuesday.

“Last week the choir brought pleasure to our senior

citizens at retirement villages and at the request of Port Stephens Council, starred with Santa at Nelson Bay plaza, elves and all!

“Secure loose outdoor items, cleaning gutters and downpipes and trimming overhanging trees can also make a big difference when severe weather strikes,” NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said.

Marine Rescue “Boaters should always log on with Marine Rescue when heading out and log off when they return via VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue App. It’s quick and simple and gives you the reassurance that our volunteers are watching out for your safe return,” said Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos.

Surf LifeSaving Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce spoke about the importance of water safety.

“My message to beachgoers this summer is to only swim at patrolled beaches, stay between the red and yellow flags, always check conditions before heading out, wear a life jacket when boating or rock fishing, and be sure to keep an eye on your mates,” Mr Pearce said.

Ambulance NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dr Dominic Morgan warned the community about the dangers of risk-

taking behaviour resulting from excessive alcohol consumption and drug taking as the economy opens.

“People have every right to enjoy a drink or two and let their hair down this summer, especially after a trying time during lockdown.

“Be smart and considerate about it and make sure you stay safe and keep others safe while enjoying yourself in a responsible way, because there is nothing fun about ending your night in the back of an ambulance,” he said.

All communities are urged to follow the following five steps: 1. Know your risk: think about the area you’re in and the types of disasters that could affect you 2. Plan now for what you will do: talk with your family and plan for what you will do if a disaster affects your area or where you plan to holiday this summer 3. Get your home ready: prepare your home by doing general home maintenance and checking your insurance coverage 4. Be aware - find out how to prepare, what to do if there is a disaster in your area or where you intend to holiday this summer and connect with emergency services or keep on top of local news reports to stay informed 5. Look out for each other - share information with your family, friends and neighbours.

PREPARE a plan, don’t drive through flood water and swim between the flags - these are some of the summer safety tips NSW emergency service agencies have shared as the holidays approach.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic.

“Over the past few years, the NSW community has been hit hard, by fire, flood and even a pandemic, but these aren’t the only threats we face.

“I would urge everyone to use the start of summer to start a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for other seasonal natural disasters, including heatwaves, storms, boating and other water accidents,” he said.

Police NSW Police Force Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell said summer is a particularly busy time of year for police and emergency services and urged the community to put safety first.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, know your limits and do not drink and drive.

“The roads will be busier than we have seen for a long time, so factor in extra time and remember that police will be out on the streets, on our roads, in, on and around the water, and even in the air,” Thurtell said.

Affordable holiday fun

AFTER a whirlwind of a year, the school holidays are here and News Of The Area has your guide to family-friendly, fun and affordable events to keep everyone entertained.

JD’s World of Magic Award-winning magician Joel Howlett is bringing his brand-new magic show to both Tomaree and Raymond Terrace Libraries on the 12 January 2022.

Joel will be performing a fun and interactive show, suitable for all ages with tickets for $10 a person.

His Tomaree Library show will begin at 10:30AM and the Raymond Terrace Library show will be held from 2:00PM onwards.

Bookings required through the respective library.

It’s On! It’s On! Is an initiative

by Port Stephens Council, bringing a new vibrancy to the streets of Nelson Bay. Every Wednesday and Saturday evening from 4:00PM-8:00PM in January will see Nelson Bay Foreshore transformed into a vibrant hub of markets, food stalls, live music and a pet-friendly environment suitable for the whole family.

It’s On! dates are subject to change due to weather and COVID-19 restrictions.

Eye To Eye Science Show On 14 January 2022, Newcastle Museum will be hosting an interactive science show at both Raymond Terrace and Tomaree Libraries Suitable for ages eight to twelve, children can learn about how their eyes work,

experience optical illusions and even touch a real eyeball.

The Raymond Terrace show will be held at 10:00AM and the Tomaree Library show will start at 2:00PM with tickets for $5 available via each library.

Retro Games and Pizza The Retro Games and Pizza event is returning to Tomaree Library and Community Centre and Raymond Terrace Library on Tuesday 18 January and Wednesday 19 January respectively.

Families of all ages can visit the centres to challenge one another to dozens of games, and for a gold coin donation, can join for pizza.

The event will run at Tomaree from 2:00PM4:00PM on Tuesday and 10:30AM-4:00PM at Raymond Terrace on Wednesday.

Treasurer Matt Kean said the increased and expanded grant would provide businesses with additional relief as part of the NSW COVID-19 Economic Recovery Strategy.

“From today, the Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate will increase from $1,500 to $2,000 and will now include road user tolls for business usage,” Mr Kean said.

“The rebate can be claimed against eligible NSW and local Government fees and charges that are required to run a business such as food authority licences, liquor

licences, event fees and council rates.

“It’s been a tough year for sole traders and small operators and this is one more way the NSW Government is helping to keep businesses in business.”

Minister for Finance and Small Business Damien Tudehope said 70,000 businesses had already lodged a claim under the initial scheme, saving more than $82 million since it was launched on 1 April 2021.

“The expanded Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate will be available to small businesses across the State, from your local electrician paying for their trade licence to the café on the corner setting up outdoor seating,” Mr Tudehope said.

Fee Relief For Small Business

BUSINESSES have been hard hit by COVID and some will not be back.

Town streets around Port Stephens show the signs with empty stores and windows blacked out.

In response, the Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate has been lifted to $2,000 for small businesses and sole traders in the hope of keeping doors open and businesses trading.

Eligible sole traders, notfor-profit organisations and small businesses in NSW will be able to access up to $2,000 in relief to help them bounce

“The expansion to cover road tolls paid since 1 March 2021 will be especially helpful to those businesses who spend a lot of time in the car, truck or van.

“Toll relief of up to $2,000 will have a significant impact on the bottom line for a small business.”

Business owners can apply for the rebate by logging into their Business Profile via the

MyService NSW Account.

Once approved, businesses will be provided with a $2,000 digital voucher in their Business Profile which applicants can draw down on to offset the cost of Government expenses.

Simply lodge your proof of payment and the money will be refunded back into your bank account.

Small businesses which

have already registered for the previous $1,500 Small Business Rebate program will not be required to re-register.

Those businesses will receive an automatic $500 topup to the digital voucher.

New applicants will receive one $2,000 digital voucher.

Businesses can submit claims as soon as their application has been approved.

Medowie siblings excel in regional NSW maths competition A PAIR of Medowie siblings have won District Awards in this year’s Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition.

Kayla Peisto, Wirreanda Public School, Medowie was an award winner in the Year 6 District Award, while brother Ethan Peisto was a winner in the Year 5 competition.

Charlie Drew, who is in Year 6 at Newcastle East Public School, was the sole first place winner, scoring a perfect 100 percent.

He was one of 10,000 Year 5 and 6 students from 250 Central Coast, Hunter, mid North Coast, North Coast, Northern Rivers, Central West, and New England North West primary schools who sat the exam.

Henry Riddell from Newcastle Grammar and Amelia McCallum from Jewells Primary School came equal third out of all Year 5 students.

In total, 19 Hunter students received awards in the competition this year.

For the first time in its 41-year history, in response to COVID-19, the exam was held online. Students test their numeracy and problemsolving skills without help from calculators, rulers or other mathematical instruments.

First place winners receive a complimentary $250 Newcastle Permanent account, second place winners $150, and third place $100.

Newcastle Permanent’s Chief Customer and product officer James Cudmore said it was great to meet students in person to hear their aspirations for the future.

He thanked parents and teachers for their support in running the competition online this year.

“There was a lot of maths and science mentioned which is great to see because we know that’s important for the future,” Mr Cudmore said.

“Hearing those aspirations

and interest in mathematics is why Newcastle Permanent runs the competition,” he said.

CEO Bernadette Inglis congratulated all entrants for challenging themselves and embracing the importance of mathematics in daily life.

“Numeracy skills are so important well beyond school, in fact, they’re life skills,” Ms Inglis said.

“Numeracy plays a part in getting a job, in managing your household budget and in buying your first home, not to mention the daily problems we solve using maths,” she

The Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition is the largest and longest running competition of its kind in Australia.

More than half a million students have participated since it started in 1981.

More Than Roads And Rubbish

LOCAL government is charged with the delivery of more than just roads and rubbish from our rates.

Many Port Stephens and Myall Coast residents complain of shortfalls of delivery on basic services by our Councils.

Every time we experience inclement weather there are the potholes which reopen, some are big enough to damage cars.

Soldiers Point resident Cherylle Stone told News Of The Area, “Apart from roads, there is a huge backlog of maintenance and repairs for sport and community facilities in Port Stephens.”

New research produced for the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) shows that around one in ten Australian libraries, recreation and sporting facilities, community centres, stormwater systems, swimming pools, local airports, bridges and roads are in poor condition with significant defects, requiring increased maintenance or in some cases replacement.

ALGA President Linda Scott said this finding in ALGA’s 2021 National State of the Assets Report highlighted the urgent need for better funding partnerships across all levels of government.

“Councils own and manage local infrastructure worth approximately $342 billion, while collecting just 3.5 percent of Australian taxation,” Cr Scott said.

“Maintaining these facilities is very costly but incredibly important for the health and wellbeing – as well as the productivity – of our communities.”

NEWCASTLE airport is getting a makeover which will see more locals able to go up, up and away on international travels whilst allowing larger defence planes suitable runways for take off and landing.

The Morrison Government has awarded a leading engineering company a $164.9 million contract to deliver major airfield works at RAAF Base Williamtown and Newcastle Airport.

The contract with Downer EDI Works Pty Limited will support Australia’s air power capabilities and deliver a major boost to the Hunter region and the wider NSW economy.

Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price said the Government had committed

to a significant investment that would maximise the opportunities for both local and Indigenous businesses.

“RAAF Base Williamtown is the Royal Australian Air Force’s main airbase for fighter pilot training and supports a large workforce of Defence personnel,” Minister Price said.

“The project will maintain and improve critical airfield infrastructure to ensure RAAF Base Williamtown continues to support the projection of Australia’s air power and also enable movements of larger civilian aircraft for Newcastle Airport.

“This contract is estimated to support about 300 jobs with an average of about 130 personnel per day.

“This shows yet again that the Morrison Government is

supporting Australian jobs and backing our defence industry to deliver the capability our men and women in uniform need to keep Australians safe.”

Liberal Patron Senator for the Hunter Region Hollie Hughes said, “I warmly welcome this important investment and the jobs it will subsequently create for, and bring to, the whole Hunter Region.

“In the lead up to the next Federal Election we’re calling for the value of these grants to be restored to at least one percent of total Commonwealth taxation revenue, which is the level they were at in the 1980s.

“This would support us to maintain the local facilities Australians use every day and preserve them for our kids and future generations to use and enjoy.

“It would also create more than 16,200 jobs and boost our nation’s Gross Domestic Product by $2.37 billion per year.”

“We’re also calling for a $300 million increase to the Commonwealth’s Roads to Recovery Program so we can continue to replace and renew local roads that are no longer safe or fit for purpose.”

ALGA established the National State of the Assets project in 2012 to improve the performance and management of the infrastructure portfolio owned and operated

by Australia’s 537 councils.

The first research was published in 2013, and the 2021 report was produced for ALGA by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA).

Jordan, I have been pondering this one for a while also.

There are people in my family who are immuno-compromised and then there are relatives who are young, fit, and healthy, but not vaccinated.

Although I am a reasonably well-qualified person, my qualifications are not in infection control or immunology and so in these situations, I defer to the experts.

I also ask two questions in relation to any advice: 1. Does this person have an ulterior motive for the information they are providing?

2. Is this information backed up by the person's area of expertise or is it simply their opinion under the guise of expertise?

If it is the latter, they are nothing more or less than an opinionist, and an opinionist, however amusing or hilarious or shocking or disgruntled or provocative they seem, is in the game of entertaining, provoking, and sometimes (after one too many vodka, lime and sodas) denigrating others for their own endgame.

Unfortunately, social media has enabled anyone with a device to spread information (and misinformation) and it is sometimes those who yell the loudest who get the attention.

In your situation, I would suggest that you assess any risk, think of those who, to the best of your knowledge, may not be protected where there is risk, and use that information to decide.

Next time, Jordan, can you please ask me a question about dealing with whining teenagers, absconding pets (and/or husbands), too-tight activewear, whether colour-coding pegs is a disorder, date night disasters or any number of subjects that I am able to answer with a fair degree of confidence and experience.

DEVELOPERS are on notice with changes to development in relation to deforestation on the horizon and a State Government that has committed to making change.

Port Stephens and Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest are areas with a significant amount of new development planned.

There is the contentious Sanderling Avenue development in Hawks Nest and multiple new housing developments across Port Stephens, including multiple over 55’s communities.

Conservationists say the NSW Government’s vision for more livable communities, outlined in the draft ‘State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) - Design and Place’ is a step in the right direction, ensuring the planning system better serves the needs of people and the environment.

They warn, however, that

COP26 Deforestation Pledge

THE Nature Conservation Council has called on the NSW Government to urgently develop strategies to halt and reverse deforestation in NSW in line with the international agreement signed by Australia at the COP26 climate conference.

Australia was one of more than 100 countries who signed the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forest and Land Use, committing the nation to halting and reversing forest loss and land degradation by 2030.

Signatory countries collectively account for more than 80% of the globe’s forests and woodlands and include

“The annual Statewide Land and Tree Study (SLATS) data shows 54,500 hectares of forest were destroyed for farming, forestry and development in 2019.

“Deforestation is not only driving climate change, it is pushing species to the brink, including koalas, which are on track for extinction by 2050 without urgent action.

“By tackling deforestation,

the NSW Government can claim a double dividend on climate and biodiversity,” he said.

Port Stephens Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, "Development must occur sustainably and in line with community expectations for their local area.

“Replanting will not always offset the damage to our ecosystem that development can cause, so consent authorities need to look very closely at the total impact of any development.

“Sustainable development is possible, but proponents and consent authorities need to be willing to do the work needed to move forward with housing and business, while protecting

our important environment at the same time,” he said.

Newly elected Port Stephens East Ward Councillor Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “With Australia signing the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forest and Land Use, I agree this is a momentous declaration.

TAFE NSW Apprentice and Anna Bay local Noah Simpson has picked up a prestigious 2021 Apprentice of the Year Award for Brick and Blocklaying.

Noah was crowned the best Brick and Blocklaying Apprentice in the North Region at the awards, which are staged by Masonry Contractors Australia as part of their mission to improve the quality, reliability and integrity of the industry.

Noah, who is studying a Certificate III in Bricklaying/ Blocklaying at TAFE NSW Newcastle and works at LCG Bricklaying, Fingal Bay, was over the moon with the result.

“I was really shocked to

hear that I had won this award and I feel honoured to be named as one of the best brick and blocklaying apprentices in NSW,” he said.

“This award will give me the motivation to keep learning all that I can to improve my skills and make a good career from this industry.”

Noah was nominated for the award by TAFE NSW Brick and Blocklaying Teacher David Lange-Smith, who said the Certificate III in Brick and Blocklaying is a nationally accredited course and fully subsidised under JobTrainer.

According to research conducted by the Australian Government, more than 20,100 people are employed in bricklaying, blocklaying and stone masonry industries Australia-wide annually.

Taylor announced recently up to $100,000 is available for new projects that enable young people to lead and participate in youth radio and podcasting activities.

Mr Toole said eligible applicants can apply for oneoff grants between $2,500 and $20,000 to develop programs that promote training, skills development and content creation, or to fund essential equipment to support youth radio and podcasting.

“The Regional Youth Radio Program will boost young people’s participation in activities that strengthen their opportunities to have a voice, and provide them with a sense of connection to their communities,” Mr Toole said.

“Eligible projects include minor capital works to upgrade youth radio sound studios, equipment purchases to support podcast activities, and short courses and training to boost skills.”

Minister for Regional Youth Bronnie Taylor said creating more opportunities for young people to have their voices heard was raised as a key priority by the 2021 Regional Youth Taskforce.

“Community radio is a powerful channel to make your voice heard and to advocate for issues that affect your peers, and this program will help ensure our young people have the tools and training they need to put their ideas out there,” Mrs Taylor said.

“This program will support the next generation of radio broadcasters and podcasters who contribute so much to community life, and I can’t wait to see the exciting projects that will come out of it.”

Not-for-profit organisations and local councils applying for funding must have spoken with young people and involved them in developing the project proposal prior to submitting an application.

Applications are open from 9 December 2021 to 28 January 2022.

"The initial term was a great success and we're keen for as many people as possible to come along and enjoy a different version of the

game.

“Walking football is a wonderful place to make new friends, meet up with old friends and enjoy being active.

“It is a welcoming version of the game for beginners as well as those who want to continue to play their muchloved game into their later years.

“As we age, staying physically active is an important way to maintain our health and independence.”

The Walking Football project received grant funding from the Federal government through Sport Australia.

The cost of the pilot program at NNSWF hubs is $80 per person for the eightweek league.

NORTHERN NSW Football’s Walking Football pilot program will return for term one 2022.

Men and women aged 50 years and over were invited to take part in Northern NSW Football's exciting walking football pilot program in May, with participants glowing in their praise for the concept.

Walking football will return across northern NSW in term one with a hub in Medowie starting from 31 January.

Walking football, a Football Australia national format, is a low-impact, teambased exercise utilising the defined Walking Football Rules and Formats.

It is a slower-paced form of football with players always having one foot on the
