Sailing around the globe solo and nonstop is undoubtedly a daring feat, one usually the domain of elite ocean sailors with multimillion-dollar campaigns.

The only restriction is that the boats must satisfy strict safety regulations to sail in the extreme southern oceans.

Kevin, sailing on Roaring Forty, was forced to start nearly a month after his assigned start date due to an injury.

Having finally set off on 23 November, Kevin has been unlucky so far with weather and has not yet reached the north-east trade winds.

He's expected to so imminently and the next weeks of sailing for him will

be in pleasant downwind conditions in the north east trades, then crossing the doldrums and negotiating a passage through the equatorial calms before finding the southeast trades, which will accompany the skipper until the latitude of Trinidad.

Kevin gave 31 years of dedicated service in the Royal Australian Air Force and, once retired, chose to dedicate himself to adventures on the sea.

“The need to be close to the sea is in my DNA,” Kevin said.

“I believe that military life and navigation are complementary.

“Both require discipline,

patience, mental agility, and endurance.

“Moreover, maintaining good physical fitness, motivation, and applying critical thinking to analyse and evaluate one’s own abilities and those of others is essential,” he said.

Kevin’s motivation is undoubtedly the desire to test himself in an adventurous environment where his actions have limited influence.

In an interview, he expressed his affinity with the words of the English explorer Ernest Shackleton, who stated, “I believe it’s in our nature to explore, to reach the unknown.

“The only real failure would be not to explore at all.”

NSW and Australian Surf Lifesaving NSW representatives to Kinder-Year Two pupils at St Philip's Christian College, St Michael's Primary School, and Tomaree, Shoal Bay, Soldiers Point and Anna Bay Public Schools.

Approximately 700 pupils were educated on water safety at patrolled beaches, rock fishing, kayaking and boating. The presentations were well received by the pupils and teachers.

Each school then held colouring competitions, with the winners being invited to a personal boat tour onboard WP24 Intrepid on 14 December.

Escorted by their parents, the six lucky competition winners were given their very own life jackets donated by Transport for NSW, then treated to a trip on Intrepid.

Tomaree Public School competition winner Betty said, “My teacher told me I won

the colouring competition because of the extra beautiful detail I added to the background, and now I’m very excited to be here.”

The Water Police vessel left Nelson Bay Marina, closely followed by a powerful rigid inflatable boat (RIB) on loan from Sydney’s Water Police Tactical Unit, and sailed up to Shoal Bay. The RIB, piloted by Acting Sergeant Matthew Gray, came alongside Intrepid so the pupils could high five the Officers on board.

“This is an important exercise for the students and for us,” said Acting Sergeant Gray.

KARUAH has received a grant from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s (FRRR) ‘Strengthening Rural Communities’ Program, receiving $9500 for regional development.

The Karuah Progress Association (KPA) applied for the grant, citing the town’s need to develop a unified website that “communicates to the local community and general public all aspects of the township of Karuah, e.g. tourism, businesses, sports, education, events, history and culture”.

“We are a unique town that offers a great deal to both tourists and local residents, but lacks a central hub to bring everyone together, as existing communication is limited for Karuah,” KPA’s Marion Brown told NOTA. “We are not reaching new residents as the town grows.

“Swan Bay, The Branch, North Arm Cove and all other surrounding towns miss out, we also know that not everyone is on social media from our community.”

“A professionally-developed website would be well-placed to support local services that don’t have a physical presence, and a location for the Karuah Place Plan updates from Port Stephens Council.”

“A Karuah website would provide an opportunity for new community members to engage, connect and learn about our amazing township and assist in making them feel welcomed, and it will soon be home to our new town logo,” Ms Brown confirmed.

Man dies after drowning in Anna Bay A MAN has died after being pulled from the water in at Anna Bay. Just after 2.40pm on Wednesday 27 December, emergency services were called to Birubi Beach, Anna Bay, following reports four people had been pulled from the water.

Bystanders assisted a 33-year-old man, however he could not be revived and died at the scene.

A woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics

before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

A second man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken same hospital in a stable condition.

A third man was treated

at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, however he did not require any further treatment.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of Coroner.

Mangroves dying on Myall River

MAJOR rainfall and significant sand-silting have combined to cause ugly mangrove deaths along the Myall River, according to local interest groups.

“The major storm in April 2022 saw water-levels at Bombah Point rise by up to three metres,” Chris Taylor, a local with over a decade of experience in water supply and management projects, told NOTA. “The subsequent vast quantities of runoff flowing down the Myall River in mid2022 carried massive amounts of sediment, and when fastflowing water encounters tidal flows in the lower areas of the river near Port Stephens, it slows down, shedding its sediment load,” Mr Taylor explained the dynamics of the Myall system.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science indicates that “mangroves do grow best in water that is 50 percent freshwater and 50 percent seawater”.

The influx of excessive freshwater from upriver, combined with the well-documented lack of new oceanic water coming in from Port Stephens, means that the Myall River system is suffering from extremely low salinity, and the

Megan Barrow has lived experience of depression,

PTSD, and anxiety, including agoraphobia, and helped design the tool.

She says knowing what uniquely works for her and planning ahead makes a big difference when navigating busy and stressful periods.

“There is a lot of social pressure in the lead up to the holiday season.

“Then the period after Christmas I can feel very lonely. This time of year takes a little more out of me and can be challenging,” said Ms Barrow.

“When I had agoraphobia, well-meaning advice like ‘go for a walk’ wouldn’t have worked for me.

“So, I map out things that personally help me.

“When it gets tough, I can remind myself what to do.

“It takes the pressure off.”

Counting the mental cost of end of year financial struggles A NEW community survey commissioned by Beyond Blue found financial pressures are the number one stressor for people as we head towards the end of the year.

77 percent of survey respondents said they feel stressed heading into the end of the year, while almost a third feel “quite a bit” or “extremely” stressed.

83 percent report the rising cost of living is negatively impacting their mental health, with one in five respondents reporting that impact is extreme.

People aged 18 – 49 were more likely to report the cost of living was having a negative impact on their mental health.

Almost a third of all respondents say they are unlikely to put a plan in place to manage their mental health.

Beyond Blue’s Clinical Spokesperson Dr Grant Blashki said Beyond Blue is prepared for an increase in demand for its support service this month.

“Last December, we saw a 41 percent increase on the monthly average in contacts to the Beyond Blue Support Service, and we expect the same, if not more, this year,” said Dr Blashki.

“It's been a tough year as people grapple with cost-of-living pressures, high inflation, continual rate rises, and economic uncertainty.

“As the holiday season approaches, financial stress is having a significant impact on people’s mental health.

“It's a time of great reflection, loneliness for some, and impossible financial expectations for others, such as buying presents or travelling to see family.

“Family events can also be a mixed blessing,

There has been some conflict between the Magpies and the Northern Hawks, who are currently the

“This workforce shortfall adversely impacts access to justice for people who live in these underserviced regions.

“It can be very difficult for them to access timely legal assistance on issues ranging from criminal law matters, family law, child protection, tenancy matters, social security matters, credit and debt, and wills and estates.

“In addition, shortages of private legal practitioners in RRR areas limits availability

of legal aid and pro bono assistance in these locations.

“While technology is helping, our RRR areas still face barriers to the uptake of virtual services including unreliable internet and phone connections, and a lack of digital literacy.

“There remains an urgent need for increased availability of in-person legal services in RRR areas.”

Earlier this year, the Regional Australia Institute reported that two in five urban workers would relocate to a RRR area if a financial incentive was involved.

“Recognising this, the Government has previously implemented incentivisation models to draw more health practitioners and teachers to regional areas,” Mr Murphy said.

“We would like to see these models extended to the legal profession, who also deliver essential services to RRR communities.

“What we are seeking is the introduction of a HELP debt reduction and indexation relief initiative.

“Under this scheme, qualified lawyers who live and work in eligible RRR areas will be able to apply for a reduction of their outstanding HELP debt after working in that area for a requisite period, which we suggest should be at least two years.

“The scheme would also waive indexation on a practitioner’s HELP debt during that time.

“Law degrees are currently among the most expensive tertiary courses in Australia.

“A law student today is likely to accumulate a HELP debt of at least $70,000 prior to their admission to practice.

“This would make an offer of debt forgiveness extremely attractive and we believe an effective lever to encourage early and mid-career lawyers to consider a RRR career.

“Financial incentives are not the only factor which will affect the recruitment and retention of legal practitioners in RRR areas, but we believe this is a good starting point and could be provided at minimal expense to the Commonwealth.”

Keeping the shopping receipt handy is advised, with 5.9 percent of people admitting they return their gift and 8.9 percent preferring to

exchange them for something they like better.

The rate is much higher for Gen Z, with 13.5 percent of the cohort saying they return unwanted presents and 15.6 percent exchanging them for something better at the store.

At the other end of the scale, Baby Boomers are the least likely of any generation to exchange or return an item to stores.

“This data shows us that if you’re spending big over the festive season, always keep your receipts in case a present ends up on someone’s naughty list,” Mr Koch said.

“Retailers have their own returns and exchange policies, but, in most cases, they’ll require you to have a valid proof of purchase.”

Water security and environmental benefits flow from Seaham Weir upgrade HUNTER Water is completing upgrades to the Seaham Weir to improve safety, enable effective water flow management, and improve fish passage.

Located on the lower Williams River, the weir is an essential component of the Grahamstown Dam scheme, which provides 40 percent of the drinking water used by Hunter Water customers.

Seaham Weir separates saline tidal water from where fresh river water is pumped to store in Grahamstown Dam. The upgrades allow, for the first time, a set portion of the flow in the Williams River to be passed through to q The Williams River at Seaham.

Hunter Water Managing Director Darren Cleary said the more than 50-year-old asset is part of a broader Hunter Water program to replace and upgrade water and wastewater related assets across the region, bringing them to a standard that meets modern day environmental expectations.

"We've invested $15 million at Seaham Weir to upgrade the river flow gates and the fishway to deliver even more effective water

flow management, maintain the weir pool's water level and improve fish passage for migration and spawning.

"As a business, we're continuously working to improve our infrastructure to ensure we are delivering quality outcomes for both the community and the environment in which we live," Mr Cleary said.

Modifications to Seaham Weir and associated changes to the water-sharing rules that govern its operation were included as recommendations in the Lower Hunter Water Plan (LHWP) that was developed in 2014.

"Our community increasingly expects Hunter Water to improve our region’s water resilience, and while this project upgrade works towards that, it’s also a

reminder of how we can work together to ensure we are making the most of our water supply; there's no time to take drinking water for granted.

"Our community has continued behaviours learned in the last drought, saving about ten percent on what we would expect the community to use, but the forecasts are for a hot, dry summer, so let's make the most of what we have and save our most precious resource," Mr Cleary said.

Friendship Group takes in an array of Hunter experiences

FOR the past 28 years, the Port Stephens Friendship Group has offered opportunities for locals to engage in social outings and the benefits that good company and fellowship provide.

Monthly activities are characterised by lots of laughter and great conversation, with recent outings including the Australian Reptile Park at Somersby, the Hunter Wetlands at Shortland and a sunset cruise on Port Stephens.

The Australian Reptile Park is Australia’s original hands-on zoo, home to over

2,000 animals including koalas, kangaroos, quokkas, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds.

“The reptile park is also world renowned for its snake and spider milking program, which helps in the production of lifesaving antivenom,” Group president Keith Hobbs told News Of The Area.

“As a special group we were able to see all of the reptile work as well as a personal demonstration of the handling of a live alligator.”

The Hunter Wetlands visit was also an eye-opener for group members.

Over the previous century until the 1980s,

the massive Hunter estuary wetland system known as Hexham Swamp had been progressively filled for rubbish, railways and recreation, leaving only fragmented patches of remnant wetlands across the estuary.

Today, Hunter Wetlands is a vibrant wetland ecosystem bursting with life.

The site is regarded as a wetland of national and international importance and the centre enjoys a growing reputation for excellence in wetland conservation, education and ecotourism.

“As a group we had a guide who provided a detailed description of the

wetlands, how they were made over many years and how the current volunteers continue to maintain and keep up to date all the native plants in the wetlands area.”

A sunset cruise on the catamaran YKNOT was also enjoyed by group members.

“Although the weather did not let us see the sunset, the whole evening went like a Happy Hour,” Keith said.

“The evening included YKNOT providing nibbles and scones while our group provided additional nibbles, drinks and chocolates.

“Entertainment occurred with the majority of us singing songs when people could stop their chatter and laughter - a fun night which will be repeated,” he said.

Next year a number of similar excursions and

activities are planned, including an exciting six day trip to the Snowy River area.

SNAKE WARNING

SNAKES are active and around, as one Pindimar local was reminded during a recent close encounter.

“I normally wear boots and jeans around the yard, but was in thongs as I headed to the car to go swimming at Tea Gardens pool,” recounted Doug Gillespie.

“When I moved some wood and tools, I must have disturbed the Brown Snake, and it came straight out and hit my foot, and was gone so quickly.”

“I just saw a black body, no more than one metre long... and two holes running blood from my heel.”

Doug’s wife Kathy, who had recently been part of the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association’s Resilience First Aid Training, said, “Thankfully, we had

recently done the course.”

“First, I calmed the patient, called the ambulance, laid him down and bandaged as instructed, keeping him calm and giving water.

“After the 000 call, the ambulance only took fifteen minutes to get here, and they seemed impressed, asking “Who did the bandage?”

Like all snake bites, Doug’s was treated as a ‘worst-case scenario’ and he was taken to the Mater Hospital, where a series of blood tests confirmed the good news: it was a ‘dry bite’, the snake’s fangs had punctured, but not delivered any venom.

“Brown snakes and red-bellied blacks are very common around here, especially in the bush near the main beaches,” Kelly Pietsch, the local First Aid instructor at the Pindimar course, told NOTA. “Snakes are quite deaf and blind, they work on vibrations, so back away slowly,” Kelly

explained.

“If bitten, remain still, immobilise the casualty, and splint the limb if possible follow DRSABCD.” “The warmer weather means its important people are educated about the risk of snake bites, and everyone should have a special snake bandage that has tension

indicators on it.”

Restoring a legacy: The mission of the Rathmines Catalina Association

SOME people say that the greatest health concern for people as they age is retirement.

If that is true then those people may want to consider becoming involved with the Rathmines Catalina Association, whose ongoing work is not likely to come to an end anytime soon.

“At this point I think we’re looking at a two to three year timeline to deliver this project,” said Association President Bill Anderson.

“By that time I’m sure something else will be on the agenda.”

The project he refers to is the restoration of a PBY-5A Catalina Flying Boat - an 80 year old aquatic plane built for service in the U.S. Navy for World War II. A massive undertaking, the project began in 2013 when the vessel was located in Puerto Rico and then transported by cargo ship to Australia.

Since that time more than

25000 hours of work have been logged by members and volunteers committed to bringing the magnificent aircraft to its former glory.

The Rathmines Catalina Association was first formed in 1998 as a group of likeminded people, with a shared sense of legacy, committed to preserving the memory of the RAAF base at Rathmines, first commissioned in 1939.

The base was used to house a number of the Catalina-type Flying Boats, and missions such as antisubmarine patrols operated throughout the Second World War. Bill Anderson said many of the Association members have a strong connection to the Rathmines legacy.

“Quite a few of us had fathers who were stationed on that base, and some of us have memories of growing up there for a time as kids.”

The Association is committed to preserving the history and celebrating the memory of the Catalina squadrons, and has in the past

conducted tours of the site and organised memorial festivals.

Their work today, however, is housed in an industrial facility at Beresfield, and it is here that the project, and the Association, has found a renewed sense of purpose and drive.

“Unfortunately we were not able to have a home for ‘Our Girl’ (as they refer to the Catalina) at Rathmines, so there has been a sense of oss when we moved away,” said Bill.

“But since coming out to Beresfield, we have made some great connections, which has given us direction for the project.”

Those connections have involved the RAAF forming a partnership with the Association to support their ongoing restoration, and ultimately offer a permanent home to the Catalina when the work is completed.

“She will be displayed at Fighterword, over at Williamtown.”

Speaking with members of the restoration team, the

sense of pride and devotion to the work involved is inspiring.

Everyone acknowledges the hard labour involved, but have found a great sense of community and camaraderie.

Terry Woolard has been a long time member of the Association - one of the few who travelled to San Juan in Puerto Rico to recover the plane in 2013.

In 2022 he took on the role of Project Manager.

“It can be hard finding people with the kinds of metal working experience that we need for this,” said Terry, “but everyone who’s gotten

involved has been able to help.”

Leigh Condon and Paul ‘Crash’ Barrett are members who have come to enjoy the company and the fact that there is always something to do.

“For a few of us, I think our wives are happy to be able to get us out of the house for a while,” joked Leigh, “it’s not been the kind of work I made a career out of, but I’ve been able to figure out some new ways to work and get involved.”

For the time being the work continues, but Bill

Anderson is quick to assert that there is always a place for more people who want to join in.

“We could always use more metal workers, that’s a lot of what the project needs.

“But everyone is welcome here.

“There’s constantly a new challenge to meet.

“It’s really a rewarding experience.”

“We don’t want our more common species to be pushed over the brink and become threatened due to cat predation.

“Our innocent furry pet cat, if left to roam unattended, is undeniably a major ongoing threat to our wildlife, along with habitat loss.”

Sue advocates for the use of cat enclosures to limit a house pet’s ability to roam free in the community.

“Managing our cats safely outside our house, whether on a harness or in a cat run, will be a significant factor in reducing our threats to

wildlife.

“We all need to foster responsible pet ownership among our friends, neighbours and family, and encourage our Council to take action, as well as support changes to State and Federal legislation that requires the containment of cats,” Sue said.

Frogs, birds and even koalas are known to be at risk from attack by cats.

The National Environmental Science Program reports that there are 3.8 million pet cats in Australia and that cats now inhabit 99.9 percent of the Australian continent.

It is estimated that each day Australia companion and feral cats kill 3.2 million mammals, 1.2 million birds, 1.9 million reptiles, 0.25 million frogs and 3 million invertebrates.

Marc Goodall, Compliance Coordinator at Port Stephens Council stated, “Councils operate a permit system that requires those who own nondesexed cats to pay an annual permit fee.

“This is to encourage cat owners to de-sex their cats.

“There are only two reasons a cat can be declared a nuisance.”

These are if the animal “makes a noise that

persistently occurs or continues to such a degree or extent that it unreasonably interferes with the peace, comfort or convenience of any person in any other premises” or “repeatedly damages anything outside the property on which it is ordinarily kept”.

Councils are limited in what they can enforce in relation to cat owners keeping their cats contained.

“At this time Council has no reasonable legal avenue to enforce the requirement of keeping cats contained,” Mr Goodall said.

“The only thing Council can do at this time is to try

to educate cat owners on the benefits of keeping cats contained, both to the cat and to our natural environment.

“Other states are ahead of NSW and have different laws and ways of managing the problem of cats roaming.

“ACT, SA, VIC, NT and QLD - all have recently introduced laws that prevent cats from roaming.

“These states have legislation that allows bylaws to be created.

“Councils in these states have created by-laws that prevent cats from roaming and each enforce it in their own way,” he said.

of lawn bowls achievements for the Raymond Terrace club after collecting an impressive four State titles.

The men led the way by clinching both the State No 1 and State No 2 Pennant championships – becoming the first club to achieve the feat in the one season.

Just as impressive were the Raymond Terrace women bowlers who annexed both the Ladies State Triples and National Triples trophies.

There was more success in the singles category with Raymond Terrace bowls legend Lee Schraner demonstrating his class, poise and skills on the greens by capturing two major titles – the NSW State Champion of Champion Singles and the National Champion of Champion Singles deciders.

He will now represent Australia at the World Champion of Champions lawn bowls tournament in Auckland

from November 25-30 in 2024.

Schraner also teamed up with Matt Baus to bring home the NSW State Pairs championship.

Raymond Terrace Bowling Club CEO Jason Stokes described the 2023 campaign as “a memorable season of achievements by our club”.

The Port Stephens-based organisation underlined its depth of talent when crowned the NSW Lawn Bowls Club of the Year after outstanding performances in both the men’s and women's ranks.

THE oldest of the “Old Salts” were the original Worimi fishermen and women who harvested the animals of the sea as they did those of the land.

When your very existence can depend on your ability to gather shellfish or catch fish, you would expect to be good at it, and the Worimi were very good.

Although not well documented, enough information can be gleaned from reference material written by early white arrivals to realise that the Aboriginal people were expert fisherfolk who only ever took enough to satisfy their immediate needs.

No waste.

Official contact was made with the Worimi in Port Stephens as early as 1795 through Captain William Robert Broughton and later through Deputy Surveyor Charles Grimes, however meaningful documentation was not penned until 1826 with the arrival of James Ebsworth and Robert Dawson of the Australian Agriculture Company.

The documentation resulted in Ebsworth’s letters and Dawson’s

book, published in 1831.

It is through their work, together with that of William Scott, who lived in the area from 1844 to 1873, that we have some record prior to the arrival of large numbers of Europeans.

By 1886 the population of white settlers in Nelson Bay had grown to 30.

At the time of white settlement there were about 400 Aboriginal

people living around the estuary of Port Stephens.

Canoes were made from the bark of the Stringybark Tree or the She Oak and the paddles from seasoned hardwood.

Fishing lines were made from the inner bark of young Kurrajong trees or Sally Wattle.

Spears, used for fishing, were crafted from the flowering stem of the Gymea Lily or the Grass Tree.

Evidence of canoe making can be found throughout the Port with excellent examples of the “scars” left on trees at Little Beach and Shoal Bay.

One of the club’s all time great bowlers Natasha Van Eldik will represent the Australian Jackaroos against New Zealand in the 2024 Trans Tasman Challenge from February 2-4 at Naenae Bowling Club in Wellington.

Fishermen who scorn this fascinating fish don't know what they are missing out on as the fish's chunky white flesh is ideal for adding to a chowder or fish soup.

I made a chowder through the week with prosciutto, onion, celery, cream, corn and potato.

The fish stock I added was the result of boiling the frames and heads of a few snapper I had caught together with a liberal sprinkling of black cracked pepper and sea salt - magnificent.

Steamed and chilled, the flesh of the "rocky" can be picked away from the bones and substituted in recipes for lobster or crab.

Known also as a "poor man's lobster" the red rocky, as the name suggests, is way less expensive than the highly sought crustacean.

A word of caution when handling the "rocky" - take every precaution to avoid the numerous spines and spikes on the head and along the fin line.

Once spiked you will do a dance that you never knew - a combination of the Jitterbug, the Twist, the Stomp and the Hokey Pokey.

These dances will need to be demonstrated to the kids.

Veteran actors Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi (pictured above) shine brighter than the golden Queensland setting in this comedic crime series.

Premiering tonight with eight snappy episodes up its sleeve, the plot focuses on the playful friendship between Brown’s retired copper Jack Darby, who runs into Scacchi’s Joan Kirkhope, a Brit recently arrived in Australia to find out how and why her husband died here. With this intriguing overarching mystery, the gorgeous setting and chemistry between the leads plays out as together they tackle a different mystery in each episode.

After nine seasons, you’d think that plucky traveller and conversationalist Heather Ewart (pictured) would have just about exhausted this country’s supply of remote, quaint towns to traverse. In this 10th outing, her exploration of the heart and soul of small Aussie communities finds yet more gems, kicking off with a small but wellknown and coveted holiday hotspot: Byron Bay’s less flashy neighbour, Brunswick Heads. Ewart meets locals Brett Haylock and Chris Chen, who share their story of restoring the town’s dilapidated 1960s cinema into a vibrant attraction. There is also former marine biologist Andy Graeme-Cook, who chats about his personal mission to make the beaches accessible for all.

TANILBA BAY prodigy Olivia McLoughlin has continued her dominance on the tennis court.

At the annual Foreshore

Tennis Junior Championships staged at Stockton Tennis Club, the emerging Port Stephens prospect defended her Yellow Ball Girls singles

title to underline her potential.

Twelve-year-old Olivia overcame the balmy conditions and demonstrated

It was another encouraging performance by the highly rated schoolgirl who has developed her game under the tutelage of leading Foreshore Tennis coach Kelly Wildon.

Promising Stockton junior Ben Segal, twelve, defeated Mitchell Humbles, fourteen, in the Yellow Ball Boys Final.

In the modified events, Izaak Mehla (Stockton) toppled Tilligerry’s Oscar Breaden to clinch the Red Ball title while Stockton’s Lucas Petersen was crowned Orange Ball champion after downing club mate Brody Goeldner in the decider.

Talented Stockton junior Sam Gretencord showed his natural ability to outclass another exciting Stockton prospect in Ari Fuller and

claim the Green Ball trophy.

Foreshore Tennis Head Coach James Bellette told News Of The Area, “This year’s Junior Championship event attracted 42 of the best junior tennis hopefuls from the Hunter region.

“Despite the stifling heat the players produced a high calibre of tennis throughout the various divisions which augurs well for the future,” quipped James.

“Special thanks to tireless volunteers Penny Judge, Helen Tucker, Anne Ward, Melissa Weatherstone, Rhi, Mitch and Kiana and Steve Tucker for their support of the event and Port Stephens Council for kindly assisting with a Rapid Response Grant that provided funding towards trophies, court hire and sausages from Steak N Chops at Tanilba Bay Butchers,” he revealed.

“A big thank you also to Yolanda and the team from Coles Tanilba Bay who generously donated two $50 gift vouchers that were claimed by Piper W and Cooper B as lucky door prize winners,” James added.
