In 2020, Lorraine was named Freeman of Port Stephens.

Local and friend of Lorraine and Murray Nicol, Brian Watson Will, told News Of The Area, “Behind every successful woman, is an extremely supportive man.

“That’s the partnership of Lorraine and Murray Nicol, of Corlette.”

The Nicols are both Rotarians, with Lorraine honoured for her fund-raising achievements.

Some locals have voiced their concern regarding the traffic that the numerous facilities will generate, especially during the peak pick up and drop off times.

In particular there have been questions raised about the intersection of South Street and Medowie Road.

Currently there are barricades erected around the entrance from South Street to prevent pedestrian access.

According to the State Government’s Green Travel Plan, a traffic light is planned to be installed on the intersection, until then students and staff will be shuttled to and from the school.

Farewell to Les IT was with a tinge of sadness that Tilligerry learned of the recent passing of long time resident and community worker Les Fellows.

He was 90 years of age.

Les was best remembered for the part he played in the rescue of the stricken Apollo 13 spacecraft in 1970 and would often recount the story to those interested.

You no doubt have heard the phrase: 'Houston we have a problem.'

These words were uttered by a crew member of the mission when a fire disabled the craft.

But there was another problem.

At the time, NASA

Mission Control could not receive transmissions because the space nodule was in

the shadow of the moon.

In desperation, a call went out to the radio telescope at Parkes

We Don't Shuck Oysters!

LONG time oyster growers wince when the trendy city chefs and foodies rattle on about 'oyster shucking'.

You see, they've always just opened them and so have their counterparts in New Zealand.

The 'shucking' thing is an American term that those outside the farming game have introduced.

Whatever the case, a lot of oysters are being opened and eaten and the demand is very strong, even more so since the Covid-19 scare.

Local farmer Paul North puts it this way.

“With holiday makers grounded, people have decided to enjoy themselves and spend their money locally.

“Fine dining is very much part of this and our sales have actually increased during the lockdown,” he said.

“Just like farming the land, oyster growing is subject to the whims of nature,” he said.

“Last year, the drought saw little runoff and food available for the oysters.

“With the 'La Nina' now taking over, we have good rains and growth rates are very good, “ he concluded.

In recognition of their efforts, certificates of appreciation were awarded to Les and his three friends at Parkes.

This season, with international travel off for Australians, more and more people have been discovering our patch of paradise.

Eileen Gilliland, CEO of Destination Port Stephens, is mindful that the restaurant and tour businesses are still unable to operate at full capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions, but believes there are plenty of positives for local tourism.

“The summer holidays are peak season every year, but this year we had a good lead up through November and December and the peak is going longer into January.

“There are still a lot of people here when normally it slows down around 10 January; this year we are seeing visitation stronger right through January,” she

Fashion Pop-Up Op Shop raises over $3000

THERE was a fantastic community turnout at the fabulous Tea Gardens Pop-Up Op Shop, held last Saturday 23 January, with the ‘Pearls of Port Stephens’ raising over $3000 to support research into Ovarian Cancer.

With style and whimsy, the donated fashion was carefully displayed by volunteers so bargain hunters could easily find their sizes in clothing, shoes, bags, jewellery, and items all donated by the community.

Local, Margot Case, summed it up, “I bought so many lovely clothes, shoes, bags (yes I know I have too many) but at these amazing prices it's hard to not buy.”

The funds raised will support research and actions to help women with ovarian cancer, to raise awareness and to improve outcomes for future

generations.

MEMBERS of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre have come together to create a series of exhibitions.

The “Colour Your World” as well as “Black and White with a hint of Colour” exhibitions will be on display until 9 March at Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.

Meryl Miller invites members of the community and our visitors to, “Come and see the exciting new works our Artists have created.

“The main gallery display is a riot of colour!” she said.

The second exhibition is a contrast of Black & White, with a hint of colour.

Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “Using the works of our talented artists, our hanging team have

created a sense of movement throughout the gallery, creating visual delight for our visitors.

“Nada O’Loughlin Yonge is Feature Artist until 18 February.”

Nada has been painting for many years and enjoys painting in both Acrylic and watercolour.

She loves to share her skills through her watercolour group at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre, where they have recently had a very successful exhibition of their works.

Nada’s expertise has brought her recognition throughout Australia and overseas.

Her main subject at the moment is the beautiful coastline of our area which she is painting in either Acrylic or Watercolours.

Nada continues to grow and experiment with many different styles and subject matter.

Meet Dr Chris Hawkins of The Bay String Orchestra

IT’S not every day you meet someone whose passion shines through like the sun bursting through from behind clouds.

Doctor Chris Hawkins is someone whose love for music and her home in the bay will take you along for the entire melody.

Following a loss, Dr Hawkins came north to find friendship and eventually, love.

Love for her new partner and the area.

Having found that love for Port Stephens, Dr Hawkins wants to share it around.

“My aim is to put Nelson Bay on the musical map,” Dr Hawkins said.

“It’s amazing to see how many string players were in the bay but I didn’t know of any teachers.

“I came here to retire and I found a lovely home in Salamander Bay. “I did that for a few months but I had to get back into it.

“I decided I would start up an orchestra.”

Starting an orchestra is a herculean task but well-trodden ground.

Previous orchestras Dr Hawkins has brought together include the Provectus String Orchestra created for older musicians to continue

learning and playing.

As part of her PHD, Dr Hawkins investigated music as an intervention for terminally ill patients and another orchestra was born.

In forming The Bay String Orchestra, she was looking for players of all abilities, which plays to her strengths as a composer and teacher.

Her experience allows her to adjust pieces to her players abilities and she believes she “can teach anyone to play the

strings.”

Celebrating Port Stephens women PORT Stephens is full of incredible women who have achieved amazing things for our community.

International Women's Day held on 8 March is the perfect day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political contributions and achievements of our local women and those across the globe while also calling for gender equity.

In celebration of this day, we are offering 3 local women in the community the opportunity to receive a $1000 scholarship to achieve a goal in 2021.

For the fourth year running the program, open to women aged 16 years and older, is designed to support local women and the valuable contribution they make to our community — across a range of fields including arts, culture, environment, business, community, health and sport.

These scholarships help to support our Council's efforts to create a community where women are safe, healthy, equally represented and valued for their contribution to society, and give women the opportunity to achieve something that they might not otherwise have the means to do.

Previous recipients have used their scholarships to achieve in the fields of sport, education, community groups, technology and more. If you know a local woman aged 16 and over with an important goal they’d like to achieve this year, encourage them to apply.

This has seen a major makeover of the clubhouse, its surrounds and the

facilities available to members and the public.

An extra $16,000 State Government grant has converted the club's booking, access and payments system to a fully automated one whereby an online function on a mobile phone handles it all.

Betty has had an illustrious career representing Australia, Victoria and NSW on multiple occasions.

She won a gold medal playing for Australia in the Pacific Games in Canada in 1992.

Betty’s record is absolutely incredible, with not only the above performances but also winning Australian and State titles in pairs, triples and fours.

Betty initially came from the Portland club in Victoria, where she was made a life member in 2009.

She joined the Merrylands club in Sydney in 2005, where she was also successful in winning the club singles, triples and fours.

It's far too late to implement any of these for this year, and maybe another suggestion for you is to start a lot earlier. Impossible deadline shopping is guaranteed to be stressful.
