Of greater concern to the 150 locals that gathered outside the Anna Bay Cemetery over the weekend is that the DA allows for one movement of a helicopter every nine minutes.

The noise of these movements will undoubtedly interfere with the lives of residents at nearby homes and in newly situated over 55 residential villages such as Sunrise on Nelson Bay Road.

Locals Peter Sherriff and past Mayor Ron Swan have a history with the Anna Bay Cemetery, having been volunteers who have cared for the site in the past and who have loved ones buried on site.

The cemetery is far from

unused, with many of the graves well tended with flowers placed upon them and visited regularly by loved ones.

Peter Sherriff told News Of The Area, “It’s not a helipad it’s a heliport given that it has four pads, and it just doesn’t fit in, the cemetery is a place of serenity and tranquility – it is just in the wrong area.”

Amy owns an accommodation business across the road from the site, it houses 25-30 guests at a time throughout the week and over weekends.

“Having a helipad opposite my business will interrupt my business 100%,” she said.

The Rocher family are also located opposite the proposed site, they are building a home for their family and have a separate residence which they have tenanted.

The Rocher’s stated, “We’re just trying to start our family and finish the houses and live in a peaceful

Salt Ash Crash

ON the afternoon of 22 January 2022, NSW SES Port Stephens were called to a person trapped in a motor vehicle accident in Salt Ash, Port Stephens.

The unit’s accredited road crash rescue operators responded with Light, Medium and Heavy Rescue Vehicles.

On arrival, a vehicle was found to be located in a partially waterfilled drain on the side of the road in Salt Ash. The vehicle was in a severe condition, with numerous dents and smashed windows.

NSW SES Operators worked with emergency services including NSW Ambulance Paramedics, NSW Police and NSW Rural Fire Service Williamtown/ Salt Ash Brigade to create a safe access pathway for operators, equipment and to use to bring the patient out.

Members from the unit quickly worked to stabilise the vehicle, perform a full side removal, and carefully extricate the patient into an awaiting ambulance.

“Great inter-agency work to all involved, we wish the patient a full recovery,” a representative from NSW SES – Port Stephens Unit said.

The sole occupant of the vehicle was then transported to hospital for further treatment.

Draft Water Sharing Plan Available for Feedback

The plan forms part of NSW legislation and provides water management rules and limits on the amount of water that can be extracted from water sources in the Lower North Coast area, this includes the Port Stephens and Myall Coast areas.

The plan can be viewed on the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment website, and there are links to two online information sessions scheduled for early February.

Executive Director of Water Planning, Giselle Howard said, “We’re keen to hear from a variety of stakeholders to ensure the new Lower North Coast water sharing plan balances the needs of commercial water users, the community and the environment.”

More Funding For M1

WE have all sat in traffic at Hexham, particularly in peak holiday seasons, waiting for the traffic to crawl forward.

For those who commute from Port Stephens and the Myall region to Maitland, Newcastle or the mines for work, the frustration is one that occurs daily.

For the truckies that drive the Pacific Highway delivering essential goods, the announcement of extra funding for the planned extension of the M1 to Raymond Terrace, is very welcome news.

The Federal Government is investing a further $80 million to ensure delivery of one of the Hunter’s biggest ever infrastructure projects, the M1 Pacific Motorway Extension to Raymond Terrace.

This additional commitment brings the Federal Government’s investment in the project to $1.68 billion and reinforces the commitment to delivering the infrastructure the Hunter region needs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure,

Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the extension will get people home sooner and safer and keep freight moving.

“Our Government is committed to delivering this transformational project, which will bust congestion to provide more reliable travel times for commuters,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“It’s going to be a real gamechanger for motorists, delivering a 15-kilometre extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway with two lanes in each direction from Black Hill to Raymond Terrace.

“This will ease congestion for more than 25,000 vehicles a day travelling between Newcastle and Maitland, keeping commuters moving and giving them time back in their day.

“The project will also deliver an important economic boost to the Hunter region, supporting around 2,700 jobs during construction and creating opportunities for local businesses.”

New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet said the M1 upgrade was part of the state’s record $100 billion infrastructure

pipeline.

“This project will support growth right across the Hunter and Newcastle regions bringing a generational shift in productivity, built on a strong, integrated transport network,” Mr Perrottet said.

“It’s a government priority and will benefit every family in the region by helping get workers to and from work more safely, spending less time in traffic and more time with each other.”

New South Wales Deputy Premier Paul Toole said the NSW Government will continue to invest in priority projects across the state that will deliver faster and safer journeys while supporting regional employment.

“By backing major infrastructure projects such as this, we are backing job creation, business growth and local employment opportunities to ensure regional NSW remains better connected,” Mr Toole said.

“This project will improve traffic flow and increase connectivity, while ensuring better access to the local road network, and deliver the final ‘missing link’ in the chain for smoother journeys between the Victorian and Queensland borders.”

New South Wales Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the project would be instrumental as part of broader network upgrades across the state.

“We are getting on with the job of delivering this project, which will build on other investments we’ve made to transform journeys in the region, such as the recently finished $15 billion Pacific Highway upgrade, which duplicated the Pacific Highway from Hexham to the Queensland border,” Mr Farraway said.

“We will continue to work closely with our federal counterparts to ensure we are delivering the infrastructure our state needs, especially as our supply chains continue to adapt to the impacts of COVID-19.”

Senator for New South Wales Perin Davey said projects that improve transport and freight efficiencies are good for our regions.

“Our regional industries are export industries and that means we rely on safe, efficient and timely freight journeys to get our products to market. This project will deliver on that goal,” Senator Davey said.

NSW Marine Parks Management Plan

THE NSW Marine Parks Management Plan 2021-2031 public consultation ends this month.

With the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park making up one fifth of the states’ mainland marine parks, the NSW Government is calling for residents to have their say on the management plan review.

The marine park extends from Cape Hawke near Forster South to Birubi Beach at the northern end of Stockton Beach and is approximately 980km2.

James Tremain, Senior Media Advisor at Nature Conservation Council NSW says that the review will have big impacts across the state.

“This review has huge implications for conservation of the state’s marine estate, a massive area that includes the ocean, estuaries, beaches, dunes, headlands, islands and coastal wetlands, seaward to three nautical miles (5.5km).

“Marine Parks in NSW extend along 500km of coastline, which is about 30% of the state’s coastal edge,” Mr Tremain said.

After the review, the government

plans to both recreate and create zones for the parks and a suite of policies and programs to protect biodiversity and water quality, enhance fishing and recreational opportunities.

“Marine conservation has gone backwards in NSW over the past decade.

“The Coalition Government has wound back marine protections, allowing illegal fishing in sanctuary zones that were established to give marine life maximum protection.

“The conservation movement, including the Australian Marine Conservation Society and the NSW National Parks Association, is worried the Draft Management plan will continue that trend and further entrench the influence of some sectors – particularly the recreational fishing lobby and other commercial interests - ahead of the wider community interest in conserving our astonishing coastal and marine life for current and future generations,” Mr Tremain said.

The plan aims to seek information on areas including Aboriginal culture, commercial fishing, aquaculture, local government, marine conservation, marine science, maritime industry, recreational boating, recreational fishing, recreational water use and tourism.

NSW has five mainland marine parks (Cape Byron, Solitary Islands [Coffs Harbour], Port Stephens-Great Lakes, Jervis Bay and Batemans) which are to be investigated in the review.

“We see a lot of freight making the journey up the coast from Sydney, including into Queensland, and this will help make those trips more efficient, saving truckies time and businesses money,” Senator Hughes said.

“Ensuring local goods can get out to national and international markets is critical for regional businesses and the economy, which is why we are investing in critical road connections such as this.”

The $2.1 billion project is being jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $1.68 billion and the NSW Government committing $420 million.

This funding will also enable the delivery of the Hexham Straight Widening project, which is currently going through planning approval processes.

The Hexham Straight Review of Environmental Factors and Environmental Impact Statement were recently displayed for community comment.

Port’s 2021 Annual Awards FIFTEEN local champions were nominated for our region’s highest honour – the 2021 Port Stephens Annual Awards - to be announced at the Terrace Central Australia Day civic ceremony at Riverside Park in Raymond Terrace today (Wednesday 26 January).

Last week Mayor Ryan Palmer announced a quality field of nominees, including twelve individuals and three groups.

“The Port Stephens Annual Awards are our way of recognising the members of our community who inspire us, who go above and beyond and who make a positive impact in our region,” Mayor Palmer said.

“I am blown away by the quality of nominations for 2021.

“Each and every nominee should feel incredibly proud of their service to our community.

“Winners will be announced in six categories, including Citizen of the year, Young Citizen of the year, Sportsperson/group of the year, Cultural endeavour, Environmental citizen of the year and Freeman of Port Stephens.”

The 2021 Port Stephens Annual Awards nominees are: Brigid Douglas Brigid Douglas is a volunteer gymnastics coach at PCYC Port Stephens, generously volunteering an estimated 350 hours a year to support programs for young people.

Brigid has built wonderful relationships with her students and the community, and is

an example of hard work and dedication to the sport of gymnastics.

Brigid also helps with the club’s school holiday programs and works closely with NSW Police on the Fit for Life program.

Brooke Roach A rugby league stalwart and proud Aboriginal man, Brooke Roach isa guiding light for young players and the community.

He not only coaches, but volunteers his time to mentor young Indigenous players both on and off the field.

Clontarf Foundation The Clontarf Foundation helps to improve the education, discipline, life-skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.

The Foundation helps make a difference in the lives of young people in Port Stephens by running programs with students at Hunter River High and Irrawang High School.

Hunter Region Botanic Gardens The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens is one of Port Stephens’ and the Hunter’s leading environmental tourist destinations, with more than 25,000 visitors annually.

Established more than 35 years ago, the Gardens have become a centre for research, education and knowledge sharing for all things botanical.

It was recently included in the Australian Geographic’s top 10 Regional Botanical Gardens ADVERTISEMENT

in Australia.

Jacqueline Fordham A proud Wonarrua Country woman, Jacqueline Fordham is the founder of U Do U Boo – an Aboriginal mental health and disability service.

Jacqueline is known for her generosity and for giving her community a voice.

Kevin Stokes Kevin is a founding member of the Hunter Regional Botanic Gardens.

A passionate advocate for the environment, Kevin has spent more than 36 years volunteering at the Gardens.

He's worked tirelessly to develop and maintain the Gardens' traditions, its volunteer basis and its focus on displaying and conserving Australian plants.

Leonie Bryson Leonie Bryson is the vicepresident and a key member of Climate Action Port Stephens.

Leonie is actively involved in educating the Port Stephens community about climate change and sustainability and has worked on events such as School Strike for Climate.

Through her dedication and hard work, Leonie secured grant funding to install renewable street furniture in Raymond Terrace – known as a Smart Solar Bench – that uses energy from the sun to enable users to charge their phones and connect to Wi-Fi. Madeline Crockett Madeline Crockett gives back to her community by

volunteering her time at the Twilight markets in Fingal Bay. Among her many duties, Madeline helps to organise signs and COVID-19 updates, filling market spots, advertising via social media and providing updates to the community.

Nikita Austin Nikita Austin is a practising speech pathologist working closely with First Nations communities to ensure they have access to appropriate healthcare.

Through her private practice in Taylors Beach, Nikita has implemented a number of inclusive strategies and programs to support local Indigenous communities.

November Sheehan November Sheehan is the founder of Heart Letter Pen, an online initiative created during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic to assist people feeling lonely, anxious and isolated.

Humble, but infinitely encouraging, November donates significant time to manage the group’s Facebook page, coordinate drop-off and collection of boxes across the local community, and individually check, sort and mail card batches.

Rachel and Neville McDermott Together, Rachel and Neville McDermott have helped to spread joy among the Port Stephens community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They established Brighter Bay Days, which delivers essential items to residents in need, along with gift boxes to people who have been nominated for their community spirit.

Salamander Child Care Salamander Child Care has been serving the families of Port Stephens for 29 years.

In 2021, Salamander Child Care partnered with the University of Newcastle to provide local families access to a registered Occupational Therapist on-site for one day a week.

This partnership has resulted in over 50 children being screened to access any additional support required to help them reach their full potential.

The centre also provides one-on-one and small group sessions to children.

Shiralyn Skelton Shiralyn Skelton is a member of the Shoal Bay Landcare Group who volunteers her time picking up rubbish from the streets, walkways and reserves around Fingal Bay, Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay and Corlette.

Taylah Witty Through her involvement with the Nelson Bay Netball Association and Medowie Netball Club, Taylah Witty works to further the sport of Netball in Port Stephens.

As well as playing and coaching, Taylor runs oneon-one mentoring for young players to help develop their skills.

Taylor’s love for the sport has also led her to take on the role of Publicity Officer for the Nelson Bay Netball Association and Junior Coordinator at the Medowie Netball Club.

Yolande Krugar As the Centre Director at St Nicholas Early Education Raymond Terrace, Yola Krugar developed a beautiful partnership between her centre and the Raymond Terrace Gardens Aged Care community.

Since the onset of COVID-19, Yola has arranged regular Zoom meetings between the elderly residents and the children.

She’s also helped to arrange a number of bright and colourful cards and gifts, which were delivered to the residents to show care and compassion while they were unable to meet in person.

Calls For More Dog Area Signage

EDUCATION and signage is being called for in relation to where we can take our dogs on and off lead.

Particularly over the holiday period there have been incidents of dogs on beaches which are supposed to be dog free and dogs off lead where they should be on lead.

Locals are calling for better signage to educate the population as to where they

can and can’t take their furry friends.

Roz Armstrong is a dog owner and a member of Landcare.

She told News Of The Area, “As a new dog owner I find myself looking for signs about dogs on beaches and reserves and whilst they are fairly obvious on small beaches and reserves such as Georges on Soldiers Point Road, they are harder to find on the more expansive ones.

“It may be time for a rethink and changing the policy to reflect this by having signs spaced along beaches and parks at given intervals,” she said.

Members of Landcare have previously highlighted the issue of increased sightings of dogs and cats in the Mambo Wanda Wetlands.

The group noted that there was an increasing propensity of people to exercise their dogs, off the leash, in the Marine Park Sanctuary area on Foreshore

Drive.

This area has clear signage around the fishing bans for the area but nothing to denote the rules surrounding dogs in the area.

Members of Landcare believe the sandy area next to Joe Redman Reserve and that adjacent to the new Mambo Creek bridge would be good places to install signage with dogs being seen in both of these dog free areas on a regular basis.

Navigating almost two years of disruption due to Covid, adapting to distance learning, isolation from their friends and missing out on activities that often provide a welcome break from the books, the graduates of 2021 have demonstrated what is possible with hard work and determination.

At Tomaree High School in Salamander Bay, Deputy Principal Glenn Sproule described his pride at how he has watched the Year 12 cohort grow from the very first day of high school into determined and diligent young adults, all ready to take the next step.

More students than ever before from Tomaree received early entry offers into universities across the state, with Law, Medicine, Science and Arts amongst the subjects to be studied.

Sue Xenos, 2021 School Principal said, “I am incredibly proud of all students after a very tough two years.

“The number of university placements is outstanding.”

RESEARCH has shown that local government areas with higher blue collar and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities were vastly more susceptible to COVID infections in 2021 and remain at risk, according to a new report commissioned by Catholic Health Australia, the largest nongovernment provider grouping of health, community and aged care services in Australia.

The report, titled ‘Unlucky in the Lucky Country: how COVID has exposed social inequity’ analysed a range of variable factors and found two stood out as key predictors of which LGAs recorded the most COVID infections: the number of bluecollar workers and the number of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) residents.

According to the research, every one percent increase in blue-collar workers per LGA was associated with an increase of an additional 848 COVID cases in Sydney and 895 in Melbourne.

Every one percent increase in the percentage of CALD residents per LGA led to an increase in 609 COVID cases in Sydney and 649 in Melbourne.

“In the early days of the pandemic, it was common to note that COVID was a brutal, but egalitarian, force.

After nearly two years of living with the pandemic it’s safe to say the data and lived experience paints a vastly different picture,” Ms Clements said.

“The most vulnerable, least affluent populations must be prioritised in future public health responses.

This report demonstrates that, sadly, such prioritisation did not occur during the first three waves of the pandemic in Australia’s largest cities.

“Understanding how inequity helped COVID-19 to heavily impact certain LGAs while leaving others unscathed is vital if we are to build back better.

“We need to understand ongoing socio-economic impacts and the likely consequences of policy measures in the event of future pandemics, resurgent coronavirus case numbers, or resumptions in restrictive public health orders.”

Booster doses to be brought forward MILLIONS more people in NSW are now eligible for a COVID-19 booster vaccination after NSW Health brought forward the interval between doses by a month.

State-run vaccination clinics will begin offering COVID-19 booster vaccinations three months after people have received their second dose from Friday January 21.

The change from a fourmonth interval to three months means there are now an additional 3.55 million people in NSW who can book

in for their third dose of vaccine.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said being triple vaccinated offers extra protection against the effects of the Omicron variant.

“The advice is clear – getting boosted means there’s less chance you’ll get the virus and, if you do, the effects are generally much milder,” Mr Perrottet said.

“That’s why we are offering more people the opportunity to get the booster sooner.

“I urge everyone who is eligible to get boosted to do so

as soon as possible.

“This will help to protect our older population, as well as vulnerable members of the community.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said there are more than 40 state-run vaccination clinics spread throughout NSW as well as mobile outreach locations that these clinics visit.

“Along with public health safety measures including wearing masks indoors, working from home where practicable, not singing and dancing and minimising the size of gatherings in homes,

the other big protection is getting a booster vaccination.

“Being able to get that booster at three months after your second dose gives the opportunity to be much safer, much sooner,” Mr Hazzard said.

“In addition to the state facilities opening at three months for boosters, individuals can still attend with their GPs or pharmacies when the Federal Government authorises them to provide boosters at three months, in due course.”

NSW Health Deputy

Secretary Patient Experience and System Performance Susan Pearce, who leads the NSW Health vaccination rollout, said the change to the vaccine schedule in NSW will help people maintain a high level of protection against the COVID-19 virus.

“As we face into the challenges brought of the Omicron variant, a booster dose will ensure people have increased immunity, and a lower risk of requiring hospital treatment,” Ms Pearce said.

NSW Health has delivered a total of 440,681 third/

booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines in support of the Federal Government’s vaccine program.

NSW Health is contacting people who are registered in the NSW Health vaccination booking system with a reminder text message.

NSW Health clinics offer Pfizer or Moderna vaccines to people aged 18 years and over.

Eligible people can also receive a booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine from their GP and participating community pharmacies.

A booster vaccination can be booked through the COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Finder.

Clausen returns as NewNSW Regional Seniors castle Deputy Lord Mayor

APPLICATIONS for the NSW Regional Seniors Travel Card for 2022 have opened.

Since its initiation in 2020, more than 690,000 cards of $250 value have been issued to seniors across the state.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the Government are happy to be extending the program to more seniors than ever before.

“The NSW Regional Seniors Travel Card has been an overwhelming success, ensuring seniors in rural, regional and remote areas of the State are able to offset some of their costs for getting to the shops, to medical appointments, staying connected locally and with friends and family living in other parts of the State.

“We know what a difference this is making to the lives of our regional seniors, so we’ve committed

$246 million to continue the program until the end of 2023, as well as expand the eligibility to include seniors who are carers and those with disabilities,” Mr Toole said.

Eligible applicants are those living in the Mid Coast and Port Stephens regions who have reached the ‘Age Pension’ age.

Applicants must be receiving support from either Services Australia or the Department of Veterans Affairs as follows: Services Australia – Age Pension, Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card and Department of Veterans’ Affairs – Age Pension, Service Pension, Disability Pension under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986, War widow(er) pension.

“By putting an extra $250 in the pockets of our regional seniors, we are boosting access to safe and convenient travel, as well as reducing the burden on people who often have fewer transport options than those living in the city,” Mr Farraway said.

Applications for the 2022 NSW Regional Seniors Travel Card are open now, and will close on 30 November.

Eligible participants will also be able to apply for a 2023 Regional Seniors Travel Card in early 2023, meaning more ongoing financial support for essential travel costs.

The 2022 cards are contactless, making payments safer and easier for card holders, and are made from 85.5% recycled plastic.

With the latest COVID-19 health advice, seniors are strongly advised to apply online or call 13 77 88 rather than visit a service centre.

In a quirky satire based on Christine Leunens’s 2008 bestseller Caging Skies, Roman Griffin Davis plays Jojo, a lonely young boy growing up 1940s Germany who finds out his mother (Scarlett Johansson, pictured) is hiding a teenage Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. After befriending the girl, Jojo, a member of the Hitler Youth, starts to question his beliefs and blind nationalism. Despite the dark subject matter, Jojo Rabbit is an optimistic comedy that attempts to combat hate with hope.

The clever thing about this show is the way the creators can cycle through lead actors relatively regularly after their character’s stint on the remote Caribbean island of Saint Marie is done. The regular refresh brings potential for new fans as the show is revamped.

Now in its 10th season (and fourth detective inspector), the team – now led by DI Neville (Ralf Little, pictured) – work to solve the disproportionate amount of murder and mayhem that seems to plague this idyllic island. Tonight, the team is baffled when an archaeologist is poisoned during a dig and no evidence is uncovered to prove how it was done.

NSW Police Blood Drive The NSW Police Blood Drive for 2021 donation results are here.

Over the past twelve months, Police across all districts made 4,660 donations of blood, bringing the tally of lives saved up to 13,980.

165 officers donated for the first time, with 53% of all officers donating plasma, 46% donating blood and 1% donating platelets.

Covid-smart plan to start 2022 school year

STUDENTS will return to school under COVID-smart settings that will minimise the risk of the virus and allow teachers and pupils to return safely to the classroom.

As part of the new measures, every student and teacher in NSW government and non-government schools will be able to receive rapid antigen test (RAT) kits before school returns on February 1.

The COVID-Smart Plan to keep schools open and students safe includes: • Twice a week surveillance testing for primary and high school students, school staff and early childhood staff. Surveillance testing will be undertaken for the first four weeks of term, with two weeks of supply distributed before term starts • Mandatory mask wearing for all staff and high school students, with masks encouraged for children in primary schools • Limiting interaction between year groups • Limiting visitors to those providing essential curriculum and wellbeing support • COVID-safe settings in place for music, sport and excursions • Maximising natural and mechanical ventilation, with air purifiers dispatched to where they are needed • Contingency plans in place to manage any disruptions to the workforce Premier Dominic Perrottet said supporting students to return safely to the classroom is vital after two years of disruption to their education.

“Students learn best at school, some students have spent a quarter of their schooling at home.

“We’re committed to bringing students back safely,” Mr Perrottet said.

“New COVID-smart measures will help make this happen, including surveillance testing both students and staff twice weekly with RATs. “What is most important about this approach is that it allows students to enjoy all aspects of their schooling in a safe and sensible way.

Motorcyclist Safety Traffic and Highway Patrol Command – NSW Police Force are urging all drivers on the road to play their role in keeping motorcyclists safe.

“When you are driving, be alert to your surroundings, watch out for motorcyclists, especially when turning across their path or changing lanes into their path.

“You could be responsible for their injury or death,” a representative from the NSW Police Force said.

“The government is distributing more than 12 million RATs to over 3150 government, non-government schools and early childhood centres to assist with surveillance testing of staff and students.”

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said testing complements other COVID smart measures in schools, including mandatory vaccination for staff, increased vaccination coverage for students , mask-wearing, cleaning, cohorting and limited visitors on-site.

“We have worked closely with the Victorian Government to create plans that achieve the same important goals of seeing our students learning in their classrooms safely and with minimal disruption,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Activities students love, such as music, school sport and assemblies, will continue with settings in place similar to late last year.”

A number of staffing contingencies are in place including utilising retired and studying teachers.

The Association of Independent Schools of New South Wales Dr Geoff Newcombe AM said all three school sectors worked closely together to develop the back to school arrangements.

“School communities should feel confident about returning for Term 1 under these arrangements, which allow a wide range of activities to proceed with appropriate risk-assessment and planning,” Dr Newcombe said.

Catholic Schools NSW Chief Executive Officer Dallas McInerney said it is imperative that we have schools that are safe and that remain open.

“We need to keep our students, teachers and families safe and also provide stability.

We know that our kids learn best when they’re in the classroom with their teacher and peers,” Mr McInerney said.

Families will be notified by their schools on how and when to collect the RAT kits for their children.

In the 12 to 15-year-old age group, more is an annual state-wide traffic enforcement operation to be conducted from 12:01AM on Friday 21 January 2022 and conclude 11:59PM Tuesday 1 February 2022 inclusive.

The operation will specifically target major causal factors contributing to road trauma, including excessive or inappropriate speed, alcohol and drug driving, fatigue, nonwearing of occupant restraints and helmets and distractions (Mobile Phones) etc.

TAFE Offers Career Pathways

FOR school leavers on the Tomaree Peninsula, 2022 offers a new way forward.

The Tomaree TAFE Connected Learning Centre is open and offering courses to help school leavers to upskill and enter the workforce.

HSC students are being encouraged to explore their vocational education options with TAFE NSW in coming weeks, with more than 1,700 information sessions scheduled across the state to help young people get skilled and kick-start their careers.

There are also fee-free courses on offer.

These activities will be targeting general vegetation, grasses, reeds, bindii, broadleaf and annual and perennial environmental weeds and each program is subject to weather conditions. Only qualified operators will be undertaking works.

On the roadsides and reserves, subject to availability and need, registered herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360, Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate), and/or Metsun 600, Lynx WG, metmac 600, Kenzon and/or Grazon extra will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable.

In various waterways and retention ponds Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360 and/or Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate) will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable and as a precaution residents are advised to refrain from using, drinking or swimming in the water for two weeks following treatments.

Registered herbicides, chemicals Spearhead, Kamba M and Broadside will be used as per label directions on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries, reserves and Council building surrounds.

Scheduled areas will be assessed individually and treated as required. Individual areas will be sign-posted at the times of treatment in commonly accessed areas. A list of areas to be treated is available by calling MidCoast Council on 7955 7777.
