FOR those that volunteer to save animals, some days are harder than others.

This week, for the team at Sea Shelter, was a tough one.

They were called out to Jimmys Beach at Hawks Nest where a fishing operation had discarded the bycatch to die.

The volunteers went into action only to find a heartbreaking number of sharks and rays dead and near dead on the shores of our normally beautiful waterway.

Sea Shelter Volunteers alongside Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters staff, spent an afternoon and night trying to rescue as many of the discarded marine life as they could save.

Marine Biologist and shark and ray enthusiast Ryan Pereira told News Of The Area, “This was the result of bycatch from a fishing operation, it happens all over the world but this time we were here.

“At the time of publication Sea Shelter officially have surviving four Kapala and one common stingaree - we know at least one will survive as it is eating now.

“This is from about 28 that were rescued and taken back to Irukandji for care.”

The team returned around 30 animals to the waters and there are now another six still alive in care at Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters in isolation tanks.

It is hoped that these will be released when they are healthy.

Members Enjoying Spring and the warmth

WITH the weather warming up the members of the Probus Club of Fingal Bay ventured out on a rambling coastal walk.

This was a great time for some members of the Club who got some exercise and much needed social contact.

Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “The fun and friendship that is always enjoyed at the usual monthly meetings has been sorely missed.”

The bushwalk and seaside stroll culminated in a social revival time at the Longboat Café at Fingal Bay. “We enjoyed some great conversation, delicious coffee and a choice of yummy delights which were very welcome,” she said.

Women In Business Support Bella

IT’S been eleven years since the Port Stephens Women In Business Group was founded by Leah Anderson who is now the President of the Tomaree Business Chamber.

The current President is Fiona Brown of YOUtopia Wellbeing.

She and the committee have been working hard to continue to deliver events for the local business women’s network while doing

good things in the community.

Marinas at Nelson Bay, is raising funds to support Bella, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The community has come together in an effort to raise funds to support the family as they build precious memories.

It is hoped that raffles and donations at the event will help the family at this time.

Bella will be enjoying a holiday at Ulladulla with her family at Yurana Cancer Kids Holiday Homes and her dolphin dreams will also come true thanks to locals in

Coffs Harbour.

The event will have a focus on speed networking where you get to meet lots of other people in business locally.

The venue is able to cater to 80 people even with current COVID-19 restrictions, and the team at Port Stephens Women In Business hope to pack it to the rafters on 30 September.

Fiona Brown told News Of The Area, “Women network meaningfully and we like to continue business relationships in the long term.”

The networking group has also been great for business women moving into the area to make connections.

With many women working in micro businesses, networking groups help keep businesses and people connected and educated about what is happening with a networking experience which can be one to many as well as one to one.

International Day Of Older Persons

THERE’s a Day for everything, including the International Day for Older Persons.

It started 30 years ago in 1990, when 1 October was decreed the International Day of Older Persons.

Port Stephens has more retirees than most other communities which means we will have more people celebrating on 1 October than most other areas.

Recently Probus announced an annual celebration of Probus Day on that same date.

Probus Ambassador Frances Wathen told News Of The Area, “This invites all ‘older persons’ in the Port Stephens Community to rejoice in their longevity, to assess and celebrate their contribution to others, and to take a stand against ageism.”

The contributions made by those older members of our society

is widely acknowledged, and those who fill the volunteer roles are well aware of the benefits to their own lifestyle and wellbeing.

Port Stephens in particular has a large number of older people who volunteer within our community with organisations such as Landcare and of course within our service clubs like Rotary, Lions and the Masonic Lodges.

Frances encourages the older people of Port Stephens to,

“Celebrate well your talents, your time given so willingly and freely and know how much you are all appreciated here in Port Stephens.”

She believes that it is fitting that we will also celebrate “Probus Day” on 1 October, with membership open to retirees and semi retirees offering fun fellowship and friendships, together with a wide variety of outings and activities.

For Port Stephens residents there is a myriad of choice when it

These offer members a choice of ladies only, men only and combined clubs.

Port Stephens has plenty to offer parents without breaking the bank, which is particularly important as we tighten our belts due to the pandemic.

MarketPlace Raymond Terrace is offering some free School Holiday Fun but the offering is a little different once again thanks to Covid-19.

From Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October, kids can collect their free cooking product to take home and cook in the kitchen.

A new baking product can be collected daily from the Centre Management office between 10am and 2pm.

Consider taking your four legged friend for a swim at Bagnalls Beach, or take the children swimming at the sheltered Fingal Beach, which will be patrolled by Surf Life Savers, and remember to swim between the flags.

Tilligerry Open Gardens

TILLIGERRY Open Gardens is on 27 September 11am-3pm, giving you and the family the opportunity to see some of the most beautifully manicured gardens in the district.

This is your chance to explore the gardens in the grounds of historic Tanilba House as well as Heavens Gardens, Tilligerry Habitat, Country Garden, Fern and Orchid Garden, Edible Garden and Rural Garden.

Tickets are an affordable $5 each or $10 for the whole family, however ticket sales are only available on the day.

Purchase your tickets and start your journey at either Tilligerry Habitat or Heavens Gardens on Lemon Tree Passage Road, where you will get a map of all the gardens participating.

The funds raised from the event will go to the Tilligerry Community Association.

Port Stephens in travel demand

WITH the school holidays right around the corner, the latest Wotif.com data shows Port Stephens is a top trending destination with interest surging up over 160%.

Due to the pandemic, NSW residents in particular are opting to holiday closer to home.

Over the last four months following the recommencement of NSW leisure travel, intrastate travel interest for NSW destinations has spiked by close to 160% on Wotif.com.

RAYMOND Terrace is a town that has been hit harder than most.

The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research has revealed domestic assaults in Raymond Terrace are up 59.6 per cent to June this year, when compared to the same period last year.

That leaves the township with a domestic violence rate of 1,092 assaults per 100,000 people, nearly three times the state average.

Ann Fletcher of Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services told News Of The Area, “For anyone that believes they are in danger they must contact the police.”

She says it is important for those experiencing domestic violence to reach out for assistance.

“If someone is looking to leave a domestic violence situation there is help available locally, you can call Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services on 4987 1331 during business

Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services support people living with domestic violence and do what needs to be done to get people out of bad situations.

FOR the Port Stephens region COVID-19 brought home some harsh realities with lives and livelihoods placed in harm's way due to the pandemic.

It continues to be a tough time for many, but on the flip side it has been the catalyst for residents to explore their creative sides with eyes for a career change.

Cory Acorn of Nelson Bay was working as an engineer for some big companies involved in heavy industry and when the global economy started to slow she found herself made redundant.

The operational ethics didn’t sit well with Cory to begin with and when choices had to be made on her next career and life moves she decided to pursue her passion in the arts.

“I have always explored my creative side painting while working as an engineer and when COVID-19 slowed things down I had to reevaluate what I wanted to do,” said Cory.

“I couldn’t morally

justify continuing what I was doing with work and it was really a moment to sit and reflect what was important in my life.

“Really what better time than now to at least try to make what I love doing my career especially with the surroundings we have here in Port Stephens!”

Cory has embraced her Nelson Bay surroundings wholeheartedly as she works the areas gymea lilies and seascapes into her paintings.

Hailing from the Rocky Mountain highs of Canada she is taken aback at every turn still in her hometown she has embraced for over a decade now.

Father delivers on daughter’s wish

RICHARD Robertson of Hawks Nest has been able to deliver on a months-long promise to his 3-year-old daughter Addie thanks to the selfless generosity of Stokes Performance Horses.

Mr Robertson had promised Addie – who loves the movie Spirit and is enamored with horses – a horse ride on their holiday which was cancelled.

“Originally our plan was to travel to Mooloolaba with friends for a holiday but due to COVID that was shut down,” said Mr Robertson.

“Then my family was going to go to Dubbo where a work mate of mine offered

some time on their farm and to take the girls horse riding.”

“We ended up not going to Dubbo in the end, and then out of the blue she asked when she’d be going horse riding on her holiday.”

Mr Robertson was then determined to organise a horse ride for his daughter, and ended up messaging Stokes Performance Horses in Medowie online for help after someone on Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Community Noticeboard recommended them.

“I had actually met a couple of the ladies from Stokes Performance Horses on Jimmy’s Beach earlier that week when they were taking their horses out but never

exchanged details,” he said.

“When they replied, they said they had a great time at the beach and were planning on returning on Saturday and were very happy to let Addie have a short ride on the horse.”

“She wouldn’t accept any payment and said that making a little girl smile was thanks enough.”

Addie was finally able to go for her promised horse ride this past weekend and couldn’t keep a smile off her face.

“She loved every second of it and couldn’t stop talking about riding ‘Cheeks’ all afternoon,” said Mr Robertson.

In a decision handed down by the Supreme Court of NSW on 12 August 2020 (Hardy v Sidoti), a man has been successful in claiming ownership over a 3.35 square metre piece of land against his neighbour under the legal principle of adverse possession, commonly referred to as squatter’s rights.

Although the judgment largely involved a technical analysis of the law of adverse possession and its intersection with the torrens title system of land ownership, the following introduction by Justice Kunc provided a very colourful and uniquely Australian slant on the proceedings:‘These proceedings concern two very Australian phenomena: the “dunny” and dedication to home improvement. At issue is the ownership of a 3.35 square metre remnant of a “dunny lane” in Redfern, a suburb of historic significance for First Australians and in the development of Sydney as a city.

The vestigial remains of “dunny lanes” are a reminder of a less sanitary past.’

In short, Mr Hardy who had paved, fenced and used the small parcel of land as a garden was successful in his claim that he had adversely possessed the former ‘dunny lane’ exclusively for 12 years against the legal owner and therefore had attained ownership of this land by adverse possession.

While helping my husband clean his shed, I stumbled across the RM Williams boots that he wore for 17 years, hasn't worn for the last 5, but he is for some reason hanging on to them.

They were completely clapped out and a home for Redback spiders.

Not game to toss them completely, I put them in the clothing bin.

Now, my husband has noticed they're missing and is asking where they are.

Mrs Wendy R. WENDY, 'what sparks joy' is a very personal thing.

I've been hanging on to a pair of Billabong shorts from two decades ago.

They are very short shorts and I'd be lucky to get them past my thighs, but it isn't about wearing them, it is about the memories associated with those shorts - long walks along Cable Beach, sunset cocktails, a job flogging Kimberley tours and a body that could pull off those shorts without a second thought.

Ridiculously, part of me thinks that one day I am going to get back in them and so they stay in the drawer taking up hardly any space.

Your husband's clapped out RM Williams may just be old spider-infested boots to you, but to him they hold close to two decades of memories (not counting their days languishing in retirement).

There was that time he thought he could ride a horse just because he looked the part and soon discovered why cowboys walk with a swagger.

Then, those countless hours standing around a bonfire searching for the meaning of life and finding it in a rum can.

He wore them out to dinner in glaringly mismatched combinations, and he lovingly polished them because those boots cost a pretty packet, Wendy.

And it wasn't just for the comfort of them either.

When you wear RM Williams boots, you become RM Williams.

It is a bit like the end of the movie The Breakfast Club, where John Bender pierces the sky with his fist to the stirring lyrics of 'Don't You Forget About Me', but in this case your husband isn't a princess, a brain, an athlete, a basket case and a criminal, but a camel boy, a drover, a well digger, a leatherworker and a miner.

He IS the boot, Wendy.

I think what you need to do is rush down to that second-hand store and beg for those boots, unless a savvy vintage buyer has already snavelled them and is restoring them back to the dignity they deserve.

Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary officially opens to the public THE long awaited Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary officially opens to the public at 9am on Saturday 26 September 2020.

Port Stephens is home to koalas.

I’m incredibly proud of that and we all have the responsibility to protect koalas and ensure their future for generations to come.

Port Stephens Council is working to sustain and grow a healthy and viable koala population in our region — the Koala Sanctuary is one way we can do that.

The purpose-built conservation facility will care for sick, injured and orphaned koalas while providing visitors the opportunity to see the marsupials in their natural habitat and learn more about our unique population.

Given how hard our region has been hit by the effects of COVID-19, it’s incredibly exciting that Port Stephens has a unique new attraction to encourage regional visitation.

The Koala Sanctuary will help to attract safe and sustainable visitor numbers to our region. This will ensure continued support for our local business and tourism industries, securing jobs as we continue to grow even during these unprecedented times.

The facility will offer tailored educational tours from local guides on how we can care for koalas and give them the best opportunity to return to the wild.

At the same time, visitors can also have a unique experience to view koalas in their natural habitat via the Newcastle Airport SKYwalk and elevated viewing platform or even stay the night at one of the deluxe 4-star glamping suites.

I hope to see you all there grabbing coffee or a bite to eat at the Fat Possum Café and encouraging your friends and family to pay a visit to Port Stephens’ newest tourism offering.

PORT Stephens Little Athletics Club has a new champion.

Aileesha Oudshoorn from the Under 11 Girls was crowned the female club champion for 2019-20.

Little Athletics Coach Bob Walkley told News Of The Area, “This was Aileesha's second season of athletics and she achieved some amazing results this year including 21 personal bests and seven club records.”

Aileesha represented the club at both the Zone and Regional carnivals and qualified for the State Championships.

“Sadly the State Championships were cancelled due to COVID-19,” he said.

At Zone Aileesha won the 80M hurdles and set a new Zone record.

She also came first in the triple jump and 200m and third in the 100m.

At the Regionals Aileesha won the 80M hurdles with a new regional record and personal best and also won the triple jump with yet another personal best before coming second in the 100 metres.

Aileesha’s results show that she performs well under pressure.

Jock is also in the Under 11’s athletes this year his achievements included 28 personal bests and a 100% attendance at club night.

Marauders Quash Snakes

IT was Old Boys day at Boyd Oval, Medowie on Saturday and what better way to celebrate for the Medowie Marauders than a sizzling win over the Cooks Hill Brown Snakes 27 to 17.

The Marauders had the antivenom on hand to render the Brown Snakes toothless in front of the well lubricated and vocal home crowd.

The match started with plenty of fireworks as the Marauders pack received the pill from the kick-off and Pete Fletcher, Sam Holbert, Dan Collins and Zion Takarua rock and rolled them up the middle.

It was looking good for the Medowie men, but the Brown Snakes bit back around the breakdown for an early penalty that saw them cross the chalk for the first 5-pointer.

Dazed but not confused the Marauders recalibrated and through some smart defensive sets were able to squeeze a penalty kick out of the Snakes to close the gap 5 to 3.

Energised the Marauders' fly-half Jessey Bridge pinned the Brown Snakes in their 22 with his

boot and when the Medowie men earned themselves a scrum the Cooks Hill pack were blown off the park.

Marauders winger Orisi Vosuqa applied the icing on the cake and dove over the line while the Cooks Hill forwards dusted themselves off to take the score to 8 to 5 in Medowie’s favour.

Not long after Medowie upped the ante off the back of some well structured phase play and Marauder hooker Dan Collins crashed through the Brown Snakes and over the line.

The kick was successful from Captain Eric Tolhurst and Medowie went up 15 to 5 as half-time approached.

Just before the ref could blow the pea out of it for the main break Marauder young gun Jordan Byfield knocked a few scales off the Snakes and crossed for a try to lead 20 to 5.

The Brown Snakes came out strong in the second term with consecutive tries to close the gap 20 to 17.

Shell shocked the Medowie men rallied the troops and when powerhouse prop Zion Takarua steamrolled several Brown Snakes off a scrum move it was all over 27 to 17.

Player-Coach Tim Lancaster gave complete praise to both teams on a real royal rumble of a match.

“Today was a great demonstration of what we can achieve when our structures and game plan all clicks at once,” said Lancaster.

“Cooks Hill were again a very tough opponent to face and full credit to them they played a great match.”

Best on ground was Medowie flanker Jordan Byfield and fly-half Jessey Bridge.

FORMER Australian Champion sprinter Gerrard Keating has tipped a young Hawks Nest athlete to make it to the very top in her sport.

Mr Keating has all the credentials to make the claim, having competed for his country at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships in the mid-eighties.

The former Australian 100m record holder is now training 14-year-old Keira McGregor, and the Myall Coast local is in the form of her life.

Despite her young age, Keira has already overcome significant setbacks in her sprinting career, including a severe back injury which kept her from training for eight

months.

“The injury put her out for a long time which was really hard for Keira because she just loves the sport. Her last competitive race before her injury she won a silver medal at Nationals.”

Mr Keating said Keira’s attitude during her comeback from injury had convinced him she was destined for greatness on the track.

“She came back to training and had to start from scratch.

She was suddenly getting beaten by people who would normally finish 10 metres behind her,” said Mr Keating.

“I thought that that would really knock her around, but she kept coming back for extra competitions.

“She kept fronting up and training hard. That really

impressed me more than her national silver medal.”

Mr Keating told News Of The Area how impressed he was with the young sprinter's dedication to training.

“This training period of 6 or 7 months, Kiera has been on a mission and it’s amazing to see.

“Anyone can say they want to go to the Olympics or be the best they can be, but actions speak louder than words.

“It’s the one percent of extra work you do that makes the difference. Kiera is doing that extra work every single day. “She is absolutely flying.”

In a normal year, NSW State Titles would have been held this month, and have been pencilled in to take place in November.

“The youth girls have been playing with so much enthusiasm for the game of AFL and for Caitlyn to kick her first goal at home in front of family and friends is pretty

Keira found a love for the sport after joining Little Athletics in Hawks Nest at age five.

“I really enjoyed it and started competing very early on. I joined a local coach at about 7 years and have never lost my love for athletics,” she said.

Keira has enjoyed the challenge of working under Mr Keating.

“Gerrard is enjoyable to train under but can be very strict when I don't do things correctly. He knows so much about the history of the sport and encourages me all the time. He really pushes me to get the best I can possibly do.”

For such a young competitor, Keira’s career has been packed with highlights.

“I was selected to be part of the NSW team to go to Adelaide and compete in the Pacific School Games in 2017. I came second in the long jump and was a member of the 4x100m relay team who won and broke the record time!

“In the Australian National championships in 2019, I came second in the 13 years 100m sprint and was again a member of the NSW 4x100m relay team who won gold,” said Keira.

The pair have spent the last week training in Hawks Nest, taking advantage of the area’s sand dunes to take a break from track training.

“We have been training on the sand. I like it on the sand to give that little bit of resistance for them.

“It has been great to have an opportunity to come up and do some one on one training with Keira.”

WHILE the senior Port Power AFL team’s in Medowie have been struggling to kick one through the middle the Under 11’s Youth Girls have landed their first goal of the season at home.

On a dreary Sunday the Port Power girls came up against the Cardiff Hawks at Ferodale Oval, Medowie with the Hawks red hot favourites.

The Hawks started strong against the junior Power girls kicking four unanswered goals in the first quarter as the rain fell from above.

Determined to finally show the Newcastle-based teams how far Port Power had progressed young Caitlyn Ashpole broke free off the back of some team inspired play and slotted the Sherrin through the centre.

It was Caitlyn’s and her team’s first goal of a long season and she celebrated in style by giving the goal umpire a high five as the
