By Tara CAMPBELL STAR Struck is back with a unique show allowing every student to ‘Rise Up’ for the show’s 29th year.

After the unfortunate decision to cancel the show in 2020 due to COVID-19, changes were made to the show to allow for 2021’s performances.

With only 90 minutes of performance, no interval, two casts and no choir, it seemed as though some of the Star Struck magic may have been lost with the cuts.

This was certainly not the case.

Every student shone in a way that audiences have never seen before, showing some of the most talented individuals that the extended Hunter region has to offer.

Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “In Lemon Tree Passage we’re planning to create a town square on the foreshore, which could become the new community heart of the Tilligerry Peninsula.

“We’ll also build a shared pathway from Henderson Park to Rudd Reserve.

“In Nelson Bay, we’ll build on the success of the Streets as Shared Spaces trial at Fly Point to create a permanent shared pathway from Nelson Bay town centre to Shoal Bay West.

“This foreshore is a huge attraction for locals and visitors, so it will be fantastic to better connect our coast.”

The Mayor revealed at the announcement that unfortunately the pathway would not address the pedestrian pinch point on Shoal Bay Road, he said that would

have been funded under the SRV which the LGA was not granted.

“In Raymond Terrace, we’ll be implementing key actions from the Public Domain Plan to improve connectivity and make the town centre more attractive,

safe and vibrant.

“This may include new entry signage, paving, street furniture, planting, public art and accessibility improvements,” he said.

SOME 50 happy campers in their caravans and mobile homes have 'landed' on the oval next to the Tilligerry RSL. Known as 'The Eagles' they are part of a subchapter of the Campervan and MotorHome Club of Australia (CMCA).

Club Vice President Peter Johnson said, “We are solo campers consisting of about 60% women and 40% men.

“We are Hunter based but members from outside the area are most welcome,” he added.

“Our Club generally goes away for about four days at a time and our female members feel a greater sense of security being in a group,” he remarked.

“We have games, play cards and have a happy hour each day so there is great social interaction,” he stated.

“The owner of the old oval gave us permission to locate on the grassed area and the RSL

Port Stephens students delight audiences in Star Struck’s 29th year

Port Stephens’ own Irrawang High Senior Drum Corps began the show with Thunderstruck and from that moment, it was clear that audiences were in for a strong show.

Cameron Elkin returned as compere for the show and delighted audiences with his witty, comedic remarks and high kicks, leaving the actual dancing to the talented students of the two casts.

Port Stephens’ students shone in songs including Larger Than Life, Black and Gold and Truth Beauty Freedom Love along with featured dancers, drama students, members of the singing choir and orchestra and backing vocalists.

Stand out vocal performances came from Marnie Nebauer and Riley Stobbs with The Show Must Go On, sending chills down the spines of listeners, whilst Logan Biles’ rendition of Telly showcased his high level of performance ability.

Emily Gardner wowed all with a performance of Into The Unknown that cemented her place in the professional music industry, and clearly has a remarkable future ahead of her.

New Book About Tilligerry

IF you look at the two photos you will notice that a lot has changed in the 100 years since the 1894 photo was taken of the Salt Ash pupils and their teachers.

These pictures and hundreds of others are kept in the archives of the Port Stephens Family History Society based at the old Lemon

Tree Passage School site on the top of the hill beside Club Lemon Tree.

The society boasts numerous publications and they are well on the way in cobbling together their next book 'Up the Tilligerry Creek and its Tracks’.

This follows the very successful 'History and Heritage of Tanilba House' (2019) which has recently been reprinted.

They also need your help to fill in the gaps, particularly early

photos and land title documents dating back to the 1830s.

Society president Denise Gaudion explains, “Such was the demand for our initial publication, 'A History of the Tilligerry Peninsula' (1996) that it went to a second imprint and rather than go to a third edition, we decided to expand on it.

“Our new book will include more pictures and references to land title holders,” she said.

“If any residents of the peninsula

have old photos or mouldering title documents, we would be most grateful if you could share them with us.

“They would fill in the gaps and be preserved for future generations,” she added.

A simple search of 'Port Stephens Family History Society' will explain the activities of the society and Denise can be contacted on 0422 303 171.

Female Empty Nesters The New Homeless

IT'S a sad state of affairs but women are now the fastest growing group of homeless people in Australia.

It’s not teens, or youth that make up this group.

The stark reality is that women aged 65-74 are now experiencing a growth in homelessness.

Local solicitor Brooke Vitnell who has previously worked for The Federal

Minister for Families and Social Services as a Senior Adviser and the Federal Minister for Employment and Minister for Women is seeing these women in her practice.

Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area, “The fastest growing cohort of homeless people in Australia today is older women aged 65 to 74.

“Homelessness within this group increased by 51% in five years to 2016.

recent homelessness data yet and I can only imagine once 2020’s data is added, these figures will paint a more profoundly worrying picture.

“Census data does not even tell the full story, because for many older women, homelessness manifests itself in 'couch surfing' - stays in relatives’ guests’ rooms, spare bedrooms of friends' homes or on someone's sofa.

“We have a growing cohort of vulnerable older female

Australians and most of society isn't aware.

“These women aren’t employed as often as younger Australians, they are overlooked for work, rendering them reliant on an aged pension or a disability support pension.”

She went on to say women in this situation often pursue a separation or divorce later in life and a Court may order that shared property be listed for sale.

They then usually end up with either a little or substantial amount of cash after the sale of property.

This is compounded by financial institutions who are reluctant to lend to single women in their 50s, 60s and 70s who aren’t working full time.

“This obstacle is encountered for women without a rental history as well, they may have owned the house for 40 odd years, finding affordable rental accommodation without a rental history, or a savings history can be difficult.

“There are also those women for whom a medical emergency or unexpected health problem can materialise, leaving them out of the workplace for weeks or months on end, not accruing an income but still running up medical expenses which can quite quickly imperil a woman financially,” she said.

Anne Fletcher of Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services told News Of The Area, “Certainly we are seeing women that have been at home and been homemakers, they don’t have Super to fall back on, and now they find themselves without a property, not enough money to buy, and no relevant recent skills to get jobs.

“On Jobseekers’ $590 a fortnight after they pay for a room for around $260 a week they are left with around $70 a fortnight - these women get marginalised.

“This is such a large problem as there are some big players that need to come to the table on this and they way they support people in this space and the way they look at family law,” she said.

Anna Bay Eyesore

THE failed Anna Bay Resort is a blight on the visual amenity of the region.

Unfortunately for Port Stephens it sits at the entry to the Stockton sand dunes and is sometimes the first thing that visitors to Anna Bay see.

The buildings are graffitied and derelict with no plan in sight for the remediation of the site.

Council have taken the owner to the Land and Environment Court but there is little that they can do – the site will sit derelict until the owner chooses to do more.

It was in December 2019 that the resort owner paid to have trees planted by Council which were supposed to screen off the visual impact of the concrete pods.

This screen has been far from effective with the trees failing to thrive in the harsh environment.

Local Anna Bay resident Kelly Hammond has been watching the Anna Bay Resort since day one and has been fighting for something to be

done for years.

It has been a long nine year journey.

Everyone locally agrees that the failed development needs to be addressed.

What little has been achieved through the Land and Environment Court still sees a derelict building site being slowly swallowed by sand, covered in graffiti and screened by trees which were planted but not watered which are withering and dying.

Kate Drinan of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “We have ongoing contact with the owner of the Anna Bay Resort.

“We have worked with the applicant to improve the appearance of the site and where possible and necessary, compliance action has been taken.

“We have been notified about the state of the trees — we will be inspecting them and working with the owner to make any changes to maintenance as needed.

“Limited action can be taken by us to manage the appearance of development

Coral Decline

THERE is a rare and beautiful coral which calls Port Stephens home, however researchers predict that the purple cauliflower coral may be extinct within the next 10 years.

For many when it comes to what sits below the water it is somewhat out of sight and out of mind.

The researchers from Southern Cross University found that the recent flood events have pushed the coral to the brink with the recent flood events pushing the endangered purple cauliflower coral into significant decline.

The coral is at greater risk from sand movement (sediment mobilisation) along with boat anchoring and moorings are the likely causes.

Port Stephens’ clusters of Dendronephthya australis, mapped by the research team

in 2019, had declined by almost 70% in just eight years.

The Cauliflower Coral is one of the few temperate water soft corals found in NSW. The species is endemic to eastern Australia and it is currently only known to occur from Port Stephens to Jervis Bay. Colonies of Cauliflower Coral not only provide shelter within their complex structure, but also support small crustacean (amphipod) communities, which are a key dietary component of many marine organisms.

Previous studies have shown that juveniles of the Australasian snapper Chrysophrys auratus as well as the Endangered White’s seahorse Hippocampus whitei show strong preference for this soft coral habitat.

More recently, researchers were shocked to find high levels of run-off in the Karuah

sites,” she said.

However the community is seeking more action.

Hammond, who is running for Council in the September elections, like other residents would like to see a permanent solution to the site.

"This property is on the market yet again and stronger regulations are required to prevent abounded unsightly developments being repeated in small towns throughout Port Stephens.

"The community did push for trees to be planted to help

stop sand blowing across the road and to soften the visual impacts, unfortunately the fast growing cheese trees wilted in the heat and never received water in the first few months of growth.

"RU2 zoning seems to give permission to build sand swallowing or Mosquito infested Resorts - after 9 years the community surely deserves to know what action Council is prepared to take.

“An offer has been made with Century 21 on a part of the site, 1,000 square metres of the 4.14ha - what this means for Anna Bay is yet to be seen,” she said.

River catchment during the March 2021 floods has caused even further devastation of this population.

The combined NSW Department of Primary Industries and Southern Cross University study, led by PhD researcher Meryl Larkin, has explored the potential causes for the decline of this ecologically unique soft coral species using innovative modelling methods.

“Although environmental

conditions are still conducive to the presence of the corals within Port Stephens, this species has continued to decline.

“Modelling has shown there is a correlation between the loss of coral colonies over the past decade and sand movements within the estuary,” Ms Larkin said.

“While the models show that sand movement is likely to be a major contributing factor, many other factors can damage

and kill colonies.

“Boat anchoring, moorings and fishing lines have been observed impacting aggregations.

“There may also be other as-yet-undetermined factors at play, such as disease, pollution or other water quality issues contributing to their decline.”

The coral has been recorded here in Port Stephens since the 1970’s.

“To watch it decline so

rapidly has been very upsetting.

Hopefully this study helps highlight the urgent need to implement measures to protect this species.

“We have started to investigate aquarium propagation followed by transplantation back to the natural environment to aid recovery.

“These early experiments have shown some promising results,” she said.

Chris Doohan Runs For Council

CHRIS Doohan is pretty excited about what he has achieved in his role as a Councillor for Port Stephens and believes he still has work left to do.

That’s why he is planning to run again for another stint as a Councillor representing the people of Central Ward.

On top of his list of achievements during his tenure are the Port Stephens Koala Hospital, the 7 Day Makeover at Anna Bay and the

work completed at Robinson Reserve and the Skate Park.

“That was a massive passion of mine,” he said.

He is keen to see the advancement of the All Abilities Playground at Anna Bay progress in the future.

At Lemon Tree Passage, he understands that there is some frustration while roadworks are being done.

“But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we’re also doing work at Lemon Tree Passage Foreshore, not a 7 Day Makeover but a mini

makeover.”

“Medowie Social is riding a wave of success and the 7 Day Makeover was a monstrous success.”

The community of Medowie is following up with a group of people that are already looking at ways to generate income so the community can pay for future initiatives.

He believes that the infrastructure that Council put in with the Peppertree St Connection is now paying dividends for the community.

“There’s construction now started in Medowie for a medical facility, so the area is building a real town centre hub which is really starting to take off.

“Footpaths are going in, I want to finish a shared path all the way through Medowie so kids can get to school safely.

“We’ve got to fix some of those roads.

“There will be a massive emphasis on footpaths, roads and rubbish.”

Doohan wants to see the waste system which is highly efficient teamed with more recycling.

PORT Stephens-Hunter Police Districts will welcome five new probationary constables after they graduated at a ceremony at the Goulburn Police Academy last week.

The new probationary constables have been assigned to police area commands and police districts across the state.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the new recruits who bring a fresh boost to the Force.

“Congratulations to the men and women of class 347, who graduate today and will join the NSW Police Force at its strongest and most efficient,” Mr Elliott said.

“After eight months of world-class training, the attesting officers will join their stations next Monday and invigorate the policing capabilities of this state.”

The NSW Government has committed to invest $583 million to introduce 1500 extra police over four years to enhance community safety across NSW and is investing $60 million over four years to upgrade the Goulburn Police Academy.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin welcomed the recruits who will join the local Police Districts.

“Our new police officers have chosen a career of service and will be a vital asset to the community,” Mr Martin said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the new officers for their contribution and congratulate them on the start of their exciting careers.”

Class 347 includes 137 men and 55 women.

Some recruits entered the NSW Police Academy straight from school or university, while others left established professional careers and trades.

The recruits have completed eight months of foundational training and those allocated to commands in the Hunter will report to their stations from today.

The new probationary constables come from diverse backgrounds.

Twenty-one recruits were born overseas in countries including Jamaica, the Philippines and China.

Many are from non-English speaking backgrounds, with seven recruits fluent in a second language including Arabic, Chinese and German.

Seven recruits are Indigenous with 1 recruit coming through the Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) program.

Leah Anderson’s Run For Mayor

IT'S a big deal to put your hand up for a leadership role, but that is exactly what Leah Anderson is doing.

She is running for Mayor in the upcoming Port Stephens Council elections.

It’s a big job - one which she believes will start by simply listening to the electorate and from there seeking out ways and means to deliver on what their priorities are.

Anderson is no stranger to leadership having served as President of Business Port Stephens (previously), Tomaree Business Chamber, President of Nelson Bay Town Management, she is also a past

president of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay and founder of the Port Stephens Women In Business Network.

Anderson is heading up the Labor Party team for the Port Stephens Council elections, standing alongside her is Roz Armstrong in East Ward and Jason Wells and Kelly Hammond in Central Ward, they are joining Giacomo Arnott in West Ward in Labor’s bid to secure seats on the regions local government.

There are notable seats available on Council with long term councillors John Nell and Steve Tucker retiring from their roles.

This election will see Anderson and her team going

out to as many community organisations and finding out what the big issues are for them.

Anderson told News Of The Area, “I’m not making promises until I can actually determine what each community wants and try to prioritise that, and look at how achievable that is because I can’t go out promising everything.”

She believes where there are significant developments with fees contributed to council that connecting these developments with pathways using the development contributions is a major priority.

“We have communities

where mothers with babies in prams are walking on the side of the road to get into town, there are instances where developer contributions have been used for concrete pads for bus stops but at this point in time there are no buses and no footpaths.

“I’m going to be striving to do everything we can, if we haven’t done it, why we haven’t done it yet, and if it's funding how are we prioritising funding on projects that don’t seem as urgent or as important as a safe roadway or a safe pathway,” she said.

When questioned Mayor Ryan Palmer stated that he had not announced his intention to run for the office again as yet.

“Over the last five years, the NSW Government has delivered upgrades for Nelson Bay Road, with the Bobs Farm to Anna Bay section completed in 2015, the upgrade of the Medowie Road intersection completed in 2019 and the Lemon Tree Passage Road in-

tersection upgrade completed in mid-2020,” Mr Toole said.

“The Williamtown to Bobs Farm duplication is the last major piece of this upgrade and will make a huge difference, which is why we’ve been working so hard to get it right, ensuring the community gets the upgrade they need.

“The release of the Community Consultation Report for the large section of the Williamtown to Bobs Farm duplication shows strong support for the new off-line alternative they requested we consider last year, so we’ll be considering that closely as we work towards a preferred option.

Nelson Bay Rd Duplication

DUPLICATION of Nelson Bay Road to dual lanes from Newcastle to the Bay has long been needed and it has been on the drawing board for many years.

During the last election campaign Premier Gladys Berejiklian committed to the project which would potentially alleviate the bottle neck created by single lane sections of Nelson Bay Road during peak hours and holiday times.

This week the Government announced that moves to upgrade Nelson Bay Road between Williamtown and Bobs Farm are powering ahead with the release of the Community Consultation Report and tenders called this month to build a one-kilometre section from Salt Ash to Bobs Farm.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government is investing $275 million to duplicate Nelson Bay Road from Williamtown to Bobs Farm, improving safety, travel times and traffic flow along

“As that detailed planning work continues, the community will soon see shovels in the ground on the Salt Ash to Bobs Farm section, with tenders called this week to build this section and keep delivering the $275 million upgrade program.”

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said work is expected to start early next year on this $26 million stage of the upgrade, which will run from 900 metres east of Marsh Road at Salt Ash to 1.9 kilometres east of Marsh Road at Bobs Farm, directly adjoining the already duplicated section of Nelson Bay Road.

“Tenders are now invited to build this new section of dual carriageway, which is expected to boost the local economy by supporting around 100 direct and indirect jobs during the peak construction period,” Mr Martin said.

“With the announcement earlier this month of a $66 million boost to Newcastle Airport runway from the Australian Government, even more people will be using the local road network in future and it’s vital to ensure improvements

are on the way.

“This project is expected to take about 18 months to complete, weather permitting, and will include 3.5-metre travel lanes, 2.5-metre shoulders, a concrete median separation barrier, two connected retaining walls, utility relocations and fauna exclusion fencing.

“This call for tenders marks a huge step forward in delivering a project that the community wants.”

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said, “Seven years ago, the NSW Liberal Government promised to fully duplicate Nelson Bay Road, but they haven’t duplicated a single centimetre since.

“Today, the Government announced it is ‘powering ahead’ with the project.

“Under this new plan, only one kilometre will be duplicated in the decade since the Government’s promise to fully duplicate Nelson Bay Road.

“At this rate, it will take 180 years to deliver on their commitment.

“Enough spin.

“Enough delay.

“We need serious investment and we need it now,” she said.

which works with refuge and crisis centres to offer practical programs to help survivors of domestic violence to rebuild their lives with purpose, dignity, and hope.

As well as scholarships, its Sanctuary Program transforms houses into sanctuaries for people escaping violence. It also provides monitored per-

sonal safety devices for women and men escaping violence as well as toys and activity packs for children impacted by violence.

Friends with Dignity last month received a Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation grant to assist with the delivery of the Sanctuary program in the Hunter.

Scholarships help children impacted by domestic and family violence HELP is at hand for local children affected by domestic violence through Friends with Dignity’s Little Friends Scholarships, which opened on June 21.

Young people aged between five and 18 can gain up to $500 to help them with their education or to participate in extracurricular activities that they can’t pursue because of the financial impact of domestic and family violence.

“Any time she heard music she was reduced to tears because her father had played loud music while being violent towards her mother.

“She is now enjoying and playing music herself.”

This is the ninth round of scholarships which are issued twice a year.

To date, $194,775 has been given out to 394 young people.

Ms Brosnan said the scholarships are possible thanks to generous sponsors and donors.

TRRA Highlights Issues Of Concern On Peninsula

MEMBERS of the Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) have met recently and there was a lot on the meeting's agenda.

Over 30 members of the public were in attendance including Mayoral Candidate for Port Stephens Leah Anderson, West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott and Central Ward Candidates Jason Wells and Kelly Hammond who were all keen to hear the concerns of the community.

Importantly was the issue of meeting the candidates for the Port Stephens Council elections which are being held in September 2021.

At this stage the TRRA plans to hold a ‘meet the candidates’ event on August 16 at 7pm at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

There were calls from the floor to hear from the Number 2 candidates on the tickets for any person who has

nominated to be elected as the Mayor of Port Stephens.

Also up for discussion were the contentious Parklets at Shoal Bay with members from the floor calling for them to be relocated into the Yacabba Street Extension which would activate the space providing much needed seating in a controlled traffic area.

Port Stephens Council has already resolved to remove the parklets from the streetscape at Shoal Bay where they were causing some businesses considerable downturn in trade.

Also on the agenda were the Tomaree Gateway projects which are to be funded through a $5 million loan.

Smart Parking is still being discussed as the electronic signs are about to be turned on.

Like the parklets at Shoal Bay there has been resistance by some businesses in the township of Nelson Bay in relation to the paid parking

scheme which is designed to capture $5 million dollars to be used on improvements to the CBD location.

Geoff Washington and Nigel Waters both addressed the meeting and the guest speaker was Peter Clough, President of the Tomaree Headland Heritage Group who spoke about the long term vision for the site.

Calls For Jetski Controls

JET SKIS around Port Stephens are causing angst, and it's more than noise pollution that has residents

riled.

Some riders are allegedly causing disruption to access to beaches and our marine life.

Geoff Washington spoke at a recent meeting of the

Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) and he said, “We are not proposing to ban Jet Skis, we’re proposing to have better controls.”

The TRRA are calling for better controls including limiting the speed, particularly in manoeuvring to outside or deeper waters.

One of the biggest problems of restricting within the waterway is there is no safe place for our wildlife to go.

It is difficult to designate specific areas, although the commercial operator does operate within a specific area.

The key consideration is to keep speed down, and the TRRA would like to see clubs self-regulate.

TRRA has approached Council on the matter and felt that they “didn’t get much sympathy on this particular

issue”.

While Council does not control the waterways they do have control of the beaches and boat ramps in some regions. Councils have tackled the issue of Jet Skis by limiting the access points.

TRRA have resolved to make this a local government issue and see where the candidates for the upcoming election sit on this issue.

One of the big issues is regulations – there aren’t any.

Richard Davis, from the TRRA stated that the group, “Could pursue the breach (of regulations).”

Incredible By Nature Photo Competition

THE Port Stephens community has enjoyed relationships with other cities through the sister cities program.

Now the Sister Cities Committee has teamed with Destination Port Stephens to offer a unique competition to the youth of the region; the Incredible by Nature photographic competition.

Young people in Port Stephens are invited to enter a photographic competition focusing on their favourite places in the municipality.

The competition offers prizes supplied by Destination Port Stephens member companies.

They include family tickets

for a whale watch, dolphin watch, entry to the Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre, entry to the Koala Sanctuary, sandboarding, a beach and dune tour, and Incredible by Nature packs.

Nigel Dique of the Sister Cities Committee told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee is conducting the competition with a view to sharing the images with our sister cities in Tateyama, Yugawara and Kushiro in Japan, and Bellingham in the United States.

“Likewise, our sister cities are invited to share with us favourite places in their communities.”

sporting exchanges came to a dead halt with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The photographic competition is one way of maintaining our friendships and connections until overseas travel resumes.

“We look forward to seeing what inspires our young photographers in Port Stephens,” said Port Stephens Sister Cities Chairman Nigel Dique.

Schools in Port Stephens have been alerted to the competition, which will be in two categories: students aged 5 to 12 years and 13 to 17 years.

To enter, students are invited to take a photo of up to three of their favourite

Department of Environment and Heritage and this organisation is responsible for monitoring jet skis and other vessels within certain distances of dolphins.

Davis believes that the monitoring is virtually nonexistent.

It was noted that Maritime’s vessels may not be able to catch up with jet skis to enforce regulations.

For callers making complaints of jetski behaviour one of the difficulties is determining the vessel registration which is moving at high speed and getting a response prior to the vessel moving on.

Upgrades for Irrawang and Hunter River High

THE NSW Government has committed to upgrades at both Hunter River High, Irrawang High School and the Newcastle Education Campus this week.

Taylor Martin MLC for the Hunter said “said the budget is part of the Liberals & Nationals Government ongoing commitment to education.

“These three school upgrades will be an incredible asset for the entire community ensuring high-quality education facilities for students and teachers,” Mr Martin said.

A Spokesperson for the NSW Department of Education said, “The NSW Government is increasing its investment in new and upgraded schools, with funding for 44 new and upgraded school projects announced as part of the NSW 2021/22 Budget.

“This includes upgrades of both Hunter River and Irrawang High Schools which will deliver additional permanent teaching spaces and core facilities to support the growing population of Port Stephens.

“Further information on the upgrades of Hunter River and Irrawang High Schools will be released as the project progresses.

“The full budget will be handed down on 22 June where the full scale of investment in education in NSW will be realised.”

There have long been calls for a Public High School at Medowie to cater to the growing population however this announcement shows that the current government is committed to increasing capacity at the existing

PLASTIC Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution.

Plastic Free July was started by Rebecca PrinceRuiz (the founder of the Plastic Free Foundation) and a small team in local government in Western Australia.

This grass roots movement is now one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world.

Millions of people across the globe take part every year, with many committing to reducing plastic pollution far beyond the month of July.

Rebecca Prince-Ruiz coauthored the book Plastic Free with Port Stephens local Joanna Atherfold Finn.

The book tells the stories of people around the world.

Finn told News Of The Area, “In the book's final chapter we interviewed a range of people from different backgrounds and asked them what they wanted the future to look like.

“A frequent comment was that individuals were doing what they could, but governments needed to be far more proactive.

“It is now gratifying to see those changes happening, for example WA is fast-tracking its Plan for Plastics by four years.

“NSW is aiming to cut single-use plastics by 2025.

“It still feels like a long way off, but it is all a move in the right direction, and I really do believe that the constant push from the ground up has let government bodies know that no one is okay with continuing to rely on a material that causes so much damage, when there are viable alternatives,” she said.

The reality today is that plastic is all around us but we can stop single use plastics and participating in Plastic Free July is a starting point that can help change your and your families consumption of single use plastics everyday.

There seems to be a lot of variation in advice for this problem. I know of some parents who make their kids wash their clothes when they start high school, and others who are willing to accept baskets of dirty washing even after their children have flown the coop.

I'm a bit pedantic about washing and drying clothes because I like to match the pegs and hang the clothes depending on who owns them and then play the 'match the sock' game, which never ends well because of the sock-eating washing machine.

I have, however, stopped putting the washing away. Now I just place piles of clean clothes outside each person's bedroom where they invariably sit until desperation kicks in. I feel that this is going to be a short-term dilemma, because eventually they will all leave home, or, if they don't, I will leave home and join a commune where everyone wears easy-care clothing or maybe no clothing depending on where the commune is located.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I would simply implement a clothes-washing roster for your offspring, or else wait until they have their own children and then bask in the joy of their appreciation -- even if it is 20 years too late.

High Tea At Heavens Garden

THERE is something very special about a high tea.

It harks back to Victorian and Edwardian times with grand spreads delivered by the kitchens of fine country houses.

Recently the ladies and friends from the Probus Club of Port Stephens were finally able to have their long awaited q

Ladies Function and it was well worth the wait.

The group enjoyed a fabulous High Tea at Heaven Gardens.

Ann Gibson of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “Our hosts, Andrew and Barbara Symons and staff could not have looked after the 50 ladies any better.”

The ladies enjoyed their High Tea in the garden on the most gorgeous of winter’s

days.

“There is a beautiful outdoor pavilion which is built to accommodate almost any function and this is in a rambling lush garden setting with striking plants wherever you look.

“It is a green paradise.

“They even have their own bee hives and many jars of honey were purchased.”

The ladies enjoyed High Tea tables which were beautifully

set with linen tablecloths and napkins, flower centerpieces and delicious food served on tiered plates with traditional floral china.

There was much mingling and chatting by the ladies while sipping on bubbly and two choices of punch, all served by the lovely Rhea.

The Way We Were

WITH the recent announcement of a $1,200,000 makeover of the Lemon Tree Passage waterfront, few people will be able to recognize anything left from the early days once this has been added to the previous redevelopment of Henderson Park.

The old photo featured is from around the 1950s and includes the Doyle children and friends on the beach where the tidal pool now stands.

The only old structure left

standing today is the takeaway food shop where Margaret Henderson and local ladies did a roaring trade selling locally caught fish and homemade hamburgers.

The Henderson family lived above the shop.

Between the shop and Koala Reserve was a boat hire business which had clinker built fishing boats with inboard motors for hire for three pounds ($6) per day.

There were also nar-

row fishing shacks built hard against one another and out over the water where the police station now stands.

Bernie Henderson built the first single finger marina walkway and over the years some very interesting boats and sailors came to visit.

'Winston Churchill' was one such craft which came to a tragic end after being lost in the 1998 Hobart yacht race.

Nations Of Origin Returns To Port In NAIDOC Week FROM Page 20

participated in netball, rugby league and football fives tournaments. 1,400 players and over 180 event and team volunteers, between the ages of 10 and 21, came together from across NSW to support the event.

Teams were supported by over 300 volunteer supervisors, managers,

coaches and trainers, who worked with teams in the lead up to, and during the events.

The event will attract more than 1300 young people from across NSW who will represent their Aboriginal Nation in the Nations of Origin tournament from 29 June to 2 July in Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “It’s fantastic to see Nations of Origin back in 2021, bigger and better than ever.

“This is a unique event which brings together Indigenous and nonIndigenous young people from across our state to compete, learn and make new friends.

“More than 20 nations will be represented, including the Worimi people of Port Stephens,” he said.

Origin.

PCYC NSW CEO Dominic Teakle said sport is a powerful tool for social change and inclusion.

“Being involved in sport teaches young people important skills such as discipline, patience, communication, healthy behaviours and problem-solving in a team environment,” he said.

Nations Of Origin Returns

event featuring sporting competitions for Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.

The event has been successfully held in Port Stephens previously and this year it will showcase sports

across the LGA. Port Stephens Council has welcomed the return of a highlight on the annual events calendar, PCYC Nations of Origin, after it was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19

restrictions.

Nations of Origin is a multifaceted sport, cultural, education and leadership program, which culminates around NAIDOC week

annually.

The program has four main components: reconciliation, education, cultural identity and sport.

The Nations of Origin tournament has been designed

to promote reconciliation within communities and engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal members in PCYC through the games of Rugby League 7’s, Football 5’s, Basketball, Netball, and for the first time this year, Gymnastics.

The concept of the tournament was initiated after consultation with Aboriginal Communities across NSW and young people, and motivates youth to celebrate Australia’s diverse indigenous culture and its deep impact on our history and their stories.

Over the past 7 years, the event has seen huge success not only for the participants but for the wider community.

The 2019 tournament saw the engagement of over 1400 Indigenous and nonIndigenous young people from across NSW participating in the multi-faceted program.
