TILLIGERRY’S Santa lolly run was a big success again this year but there were some changes.

The Tilligerry RSL provided finance for the sweets and the run was shortened with certain cross streets left out to save time.

What's more, Santa was inside the truck and not up high on the tray waving to the kids.

But how were the good boys and girls who lived in these bypassed streets to get their bags of lollies?

Well, as we said in an earlier story, Santa and his firie friends had gone high tech!

Yes, they had a satellite tracker and all you had to do was click on Tilligerry RFS Home Page and you could watch the big red truck working its way along a street near you.

When the tracking map showed him getting close, you could run down to the kerb or the corner and the truck would appear!

Our local firies are highly respected in the area.

Not only do they save us from the flames, they also run 'The Brooks' Award', a scholarship for two students from Tanilba Bay School.

They do all this as unpaid volunteers.

Even after they returned worn out from the big bushfires a couple of years ago, they still took the truck out for Santa's Christmas run.

Thank you to all the local brigades and their members for their service.

Nineteen-year-old charged following police pursuit in Raymond Terrace FROM Page 1

Police District were patrolling Richardson Road at Raymond Terrace when they attempted to stop a Holden Commodore sedan with five people onboard.

The vehicle allegedly failed to stop and accelerated from officers, and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued through several streets before the Commodore crashed into a brick fence in Watt Street and the driver fled the scene on foot.

“We will allege that the male driver actually exited the vehicle whilst still moving at a slow speed, causing the collision with a brick fence,” Detective Superintendent Chad Gillies said.

The other four occupants of the vehicle were spoken to by police at the scene.

Police established a perimeter and with the assistance of PolAir and the Dog Unit, the man was located hiding in another vehicle, which was located on Brown Street.

The nineteen-year-old was

arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit –not stop– drive recklessly, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/ manner dangerous, destroy or damage property and drive while licence cancelled.

Additionally, he was charged with two outstanding warrants and over twenty charges relating to a range of theft, assault, and traffic-related offences.

He was refused bail and appeared in Raymond Local Court on Thursday 16 December 2021,

where he was formally refused bail and is due to appear in the same court on Monday 14 February 2022.

“At this point in time he has been charged with twenty offences, which have occurred not only here, but also the Newcastle City Police District, Manning-Great Lakes Police District and Oxley Police District.

“Investigations are ongoing but great work again to our officers on the day,” Superintendent Gillies said.

Inquiries are continuing.

Salamander Bay Accident At 4:25AM on Thursday 16 December Salamander Bay Fire Rescue NSW responded to an accident at Salamander Bay Waste Station.

On arrival police and ambulance found that one man was trapped in an overturned garbage truck unable to selfextricate.

Firefighters provided fire protection and stabilised the vehicle before the driver was extricated through the driver’s window.

The driver received minor injuries only and no Ambulance transport was required.

Anna Bay Oil Spill Crews from Soldiers Point and Anna Bay Fire Brigades attended a large oil spill along James Patterson Street in Anna Bay spanning approximately 1.2km long on Saturday 18 December.

Beginning on the Corner of James Patterson Street and Gan Gan Road, the spill continued all the way to the bottom car park of Birubi Point.

The crew safely tended to the spill and were back at their stations within hours.

Severe Storm On the night of Sunday 19 December, NSW SES Port Stephens joined by NSW SES, Ausgrid and Medowie Rural Fire Brigade were called to multiple incident reports in the area.

Strong winds caused several large trees to fall on powerlines, properties and across roads, resulting in damage and halting traffic.

There were numerous power outages across Medowie.

Boosters urgently needed in Port Stephens

MERYL Swanson is calling on Health Minister Greg Hunt to urgently send supplies to some of Australia’s oldest residents.

With the new Omicron variant spreading, and a shocking wave of cases in Newcastle, Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson is urging Minister Hunt to take action by sending supplies of vaccine boosters to the Hunter.

“The Morrison Government must ‘ring vaccinate’ the Hunter with

earlier booster shot dates so that the older population can be protected from COVID-19 before the influx of Christmas holiday tourists to the area,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.

Ms Swanson is also calling for a reduction in wait time for boosters from five months to three months in the region to ensure protection.

“The wait time has been reduced in the UK, and I think that it is needed for a holiday destination such as Nelson Bay which has an older population.

“It is now clear that even with two vaccines people are not fully protected and our health services could be overwhelmed,” she said.

Although many Port Stephens locals are eligible for the booster, Ms Swanson says that wait times and overload of health services has meant that many are left without access to the booster.

“This week I’ve had people tell me yesterday that not one medical surgery or pharmacy in the Tomaree Peninsula had any vaccines, and the earliest date they can offer for

boosters is January.

“A practice manager told me that last month they were throwing away vaccines because people were not coming forward to get boosters – there was no sense of urgency,” Ms Swanson said.

The NSW Government has now reduced the wait for boosters from six months to five months.

“We have this new outbreak, and now there is a sense of urgency; people are worried and want boosters, but the clinics don’t have the vaccines to give them,” Ms Swanson said.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and located the driver of the 4WD, a 48-year-old man.

He was subjected to a roadside breath test, allegedly returning a positive result.

The driver was arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station where he underwent a secondary breath analysis, which allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.317.

His driver’s licence was immediately suspended and confiscated, and he was issued a Court Attendance Notice for driving

with a high range prescribed concentration of alcohol.

The man was given conditional bail to appear before Maitland Local Court on Wednesday 2 February 2022.

Operation Rural Roads Across the weekend, Highway Patrol will be continuing operation rural roads, with high visibility on back roads and main arterial roads targeting the 4Ds: drugs, drinkdriving, destruction type offences and dangerous driving.

Tomago Man Charged A Tomago man has been charged after allegedly blowing more than six times the legal limit after a crash in the Hunter on Friday 17 December 2021.

Just after 11pm on Friday, emergency services were called to the intersection of Anderson Drive and Western Avenue, Tarro, and found a silver Toyota 4WD had crashed into three parked vehicles.

Local doctors in the area have been ordering emergency supplies, which they hope to arrive within the next week, and still encourage residents to keep trying to make bookings.

“I am urging the Morrison Government to act to protect our community.

“The Government has sent people two letters urging them to get booster shots but has not made the boosters available.

“It must do so immediately,” Ms Swanson said.

DETECTIVES from State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad have arrested eight men and seized mobile phones, electronic items and illicit drugs, as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged transmission of child abuse material through an adult telephone service.

Earlier this year, Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU) investigators established Strike Force Hank to investigate an adult telephone chat service used by a number of men to allegedly

arrange the dissemination of child abuse material and discuss the sexual abuse of children.

Since last month, detectives have executed seven search warrants at locations across NSW, including Shoal Bay, Petersham, Cranebrook, Coffs Harbour, Gerroa, Surry Hills, and Stanmore.

During searches of the Stanmore and Coffs Harbour properties, police allegedly located and seized quantities of cannabis.

At all seven of the locations, phones and electronic devices have been located and seized for further forensic analysis.

Child Abuse and Sex Crimes

Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty, said the investigation had uncovered alleged chat participants who were aggressive in their pursuit of child sex offending.

“We will allege that each of the men arrested by detectives over the past month expressed desires to engage in sexual activity with children, and in some cases, attempted to access child abuse material from other users of the service,” Det Supt Doherty said.

Eight men aged between 34 and 71 have been arrested and charged over their alleged involvement in the chat service, including former

NRL star Brett Finch who has been charged with five alleged counts of use of a carriage service to transmit, publish or promote child abuse.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in his local court in January.

All other men currently remain before the courts.

“Producing, disseminating or possessing child abuse material are serious offences, and detectives will continue to dismantle these types of operations, so children are free from harmful situations, exploitation and abuse,” Det Supt Doherty said.

MORE than 800,000 students, and hundreds of thousands of parents, teachers and school staff across the state are ready for the summer break after showing incredible resilience, commitment and agility as the 2021 school year ended on Friday.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said the lessons, inspiration and incredible stories of 2021 would help shape the new school year, which begins on Friday, 28 January 2022.

“I want to thank our staff – the principals, teachers, our senior leaders and school administrative and support teams – who have given their all to ensure learning continued throughout a difficult year,” Ms Mitchell said.

“When school resumed

after the Term 3 lockdown, the incredible response from school staff to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate enabled us to transition smoothly back to in-school learning.”

Ms Mitchell said a strict cohorting approach combined with rapid antigen testing of close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases had enabled more schools to remain operational.

“We’ve calculated that the use of rapid antigen home testing has reduced the need for close contacts to self-isolate at home and led to an extra 130,000 hours of face to face learning,” Ms Mitchell said.

“We are currently procuring additional testing kits for schools to ensure we can continue COVIDsafe learning in 2022.

“As we work to finalise school settings for 2022, I’m pleased to note that many school activities

such as music and school transitions are going ahead next Term.”

Ms Mitchell said the 2021 NAPLAN results released this week revealed that NSW students had performed above the national average despite the COVID disruption.

“This proves what a fabulous job our teachers and schools have done to overcome the tremendous challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Mitchell said.

The pandemic has also not impeded the NSW Government’s reform agenda to improve learning outcomes, attract talented teachers to NSW public schools, and reduce unnecessary administration for existing staff.

“The Curriculum Reform is on schedule with the K to 2 syllabuses released for familiarisation and early adoption, and consultation

on Years 3 to 10 English and Maths beginning next year,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Through the $125 million Teacher Supply Strategy, we are committed to growing the teaching profession, attracting high-quality candidates to this great career and supporting existing teachers and support staff to up-skill and take on new challenges.

“More than 4000 public school staff and employees provided feedback on the draft Quality Time Action Plan which outlined a range of current and prospective time-saving initiatives, designed to give teachers at least 20 percent of their time back to focus on the classroom.

“I wish all our students, teachers, staff and parents a very Merry Christmas and happy holidays and look forward to welcoming them back refreshed for a brand new year.”

Holidaying in the Bay

By Marian SAMPSON TOURISM is certainly booming in the Bay with plenty of people holidaying here this year and summer is set to sizzle with locals and visitors alike stripping down to swimwear and making a splash.

For locals it’s a staycation, while for those from further afield it is a chance to explore the paradise where we love to live.

Beaches are already busy as are the carparks throughout Nelson Bay.

Booking.com is currently only returning four accommodation options on the Bay side of Williamtown on the Peninsula for the Christmas/ New Year break.

A sure sign that the shops, beaches and parks are about to cop a workout.

Meanwhile businesses are still struggling to fill vacant positions with some businesses partially closed due to staff shortages due to COVID-19.

Port Stephens has a plethora of wonderful free things to do, including day trips to the beach, bike riding and exploring our National Parks.

The inner light at Little Beach also offers amazing views and a great steep walk if you are keen, for others there is a carpark at the top and access to the lookout and tearooms is accessible.

Fishing is a great option with plenty of shore based locations available outside the Marine Park’s no-fishing zones.

COVID-19 Cases Climb In Hunter

AS restrictions ease and masks and QR code check-ins are no longer mandatory in many settings, Dr Kerry Chant, NSW Government's Chief Health Officer, is urging the community to continue masking up.

In Newcastle and the Hunter, COVID-19 cases continue to trend upwards.

On Friday 18 December there were 899 new COVID-19 cases in the Hunter New England Health area, 54 of these were in Port Stephens and 10 were from the MidCoast Council local government areas.

A staggering 418 were from Newcastle.

Of the 3013 active cases in the Hunter New England Health area, 13 were receiving care in our hospitals and two were in ICU. As case numbers hit new highs, the number of cases requiring hospitalisation at this stage is still relatively low.

By Monday 20 December these numbers had grown to 4368 active COVID-19 cases in

the Hunter New England Health area.

Of the 660 new cases, 16 of these were in Port Stephens LGA and 1 was from the MidCoast LGA. This growth in numbers is being attributed to the highly contagious Omicron variant of COVID-19.

While officials are urging the community to get tested if they experience even the mildest COVID-19 symptoms there is a lack of testing facilities with people reporting that they have been turned away even after long waits for tests in the Nelson Bay area.

Regis Port Stephens Nursing Home in Salamander Bay has gone into lockdown after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19 earlier last week.

In the last week of a highly disrupted school year, students and staff from both Irrawang High School and Wirreanda Public School were plunged into isolation and the schools closed after members of their communities tested positive.

Yet in shopping centres many are choosing not to wear masks and there are grim predictions of 25,000 cases a day by the end of January.

Just after 8pm on Wednesday 9 June 2021, emergency services were called to a home on Queen Street, Stockton, following reports of a shooting.

A 61-year-old woman answered her front door before being shot.

She died at the scene and was later identified as Stacey Klimovitch.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District established Strike Force Backhouse to investigate the circumstances surrounding Stacey’s murder.

So far during the investigation, two men aged 29 and 46 have been charged

over their alleged involvement in the shooting murder and remain before the courts.

Following further inquiries, investigators attended a correctional facility in Silverwater on Wednesday 15 December 2021, and spoke with a 64-year-old inmate.

He was subsequently charged with murder and accessory after the fact to murder.

The man is due to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Monday 20 December 2021 Klimovitch was a loving mother and local swimming coach involved in the support of local support in the Newcastle area for over 25 years, with Stacey teaching most of Stockton how to swim.

Stacey’s 31-year-old daughter and eightweek-old grandchild were in the home at the time of the shooting but did not see the shooter.

Medowie Probus Club Celebrates Christmas

WITH Christmas fast approaching and restrictions easing as we reach high levels of vaccination in the region, clubs and groups are enjoying the opportunity to catch up and enjoy the good times.

The Combined Probus Club of Medowie had a Christmas function at The Greenhouse recently.

Kevin Tomlinson, the club’s secretary, told News Of The Area, “It was tremendous that after the Covid lockdown to be able to get together and celebrate the Christmas spirit.

“Since the interruptions through the year and restrictions only recently being lifted some of the regular Christmas activities were curtailed.

“There were no customary baskets, however there were small gifts, drawn out and members lucky enough to collect a prize were pleasantly surprised.”

The meal, again due to the Covid lockdown timing, was

an a la carte arrangement, not the usual set Christmas menu, however all were happy to select from the special menu and the regular menu at The Greenhouse.

“The Manager, James, and the catering staff were fantastic and were able to provide the meals for members in a really organized and efficient manner for the 32 members attending this first function after lockdown.

“All agreed that it was great to be able to meet and greet each other and have some degree of normality.”

All required Covid protocols were met and the staff at The Greenhouse ensured everyone was double vaccinated and masks were worn while moving around the Club.

The Combined Probus of Medowie are looking forward to resuming normal meetings, the first in 2022 to be held at the Medowie Community Centre on Wednesday 19 January 2022 at 10.00 am.

Members are advised that any protocols required

will be in place, however further easing of restrictions is anticipated with everyone, vaccinated or not, likely to be

allowed.

Any other people who wish to attend can do so and find out about the wonderful

National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA), of the Commonwealth’s intention to refuse the application.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Government was taking steps to protect local communities and the environment by putting a stop to PEP-11.

“This project will not proceed on our watch,” the Prime Minister said.

“Gas is an important part of Australia’s current and future energy mix but this is not the right project for these communities and pristine beaches and waters.

“From Newcastle through to Wollongong my Government has listened to the concerns of local Liberal Members and candidates and their communities and we’re putting our foot down.”

PEP-11 is located primarily in Commonwealth waters off the NSW coast between Newcastle and Wollongong and covers approximately 8,200 m2.

The Government’s refusal of the application is based on the following reasons; the Government has given consideration to high levels of community opposition to the application; the Government is not satisfied that the applicant is able to raise sufficient funding required to progress the work program in a timely manner and in the timeframe of the permit conditions; the Government does not agree with the reasons listed by the applicant for the extension – there is insufficient evidence to meet the criteria of force majeure.

NOPTA, as the regulator, will grant the applicant 30

days to respond to the notice of intention to refuse the application.

WOODSTOCKTON was billed as a great family day out and it didn’t disappoint.

Stockton Bowling Club ramped up the energy and event attendees embraced their inner hippie as Woodstockton delivered a range of music that defined a generation.

Long hair, loud music, tie dyed clothes were all part of the original Woodstock Music Festival - as was mud.

The event was rescheduled due to COVID-19 and tickets sold out with hundreds in attendance at Stockton Bowling Club.

The community rallied behind the event which took them back on a trip through time to the days of Woodstock.

Performers included Leeroy and the Rats, who covered The Doors; Steve Edmonds, who performed as Jimi Hendrix; Normi J, who performed as Jimmy Buffet; and Woman of Rock, who

covered Janis Joplin’s works.

Janis Joplin’s set list from Woodstock was iconic, inspirational and defined the era.

She sang Raise Your Hand, As Good as You've Been To This World, To Love Somebody, Summertime, Try (Just a Little Bit Harder), Kozmic Blues, Can't Turn You Loose, Work Me, Lord, Piece of My Heart and Ball and Chain.

Woodstockton 2021 is being heralded as a great success.

60 MEMBERS and guests attended a very successful C h r i s t m a s / P re s e n t a t i o n Dinner on Monday 6 December 2021 at Nelson Bay Golf Club.

Special guests for the evening were Bruce and Heather Scott.

Bruce has been President of the Tomaree Sports Council for 34 years and has been a tremendous supporter of local community sport and the croquet club for many years.

The highlights of the evening were the return of the Croquettes, dressed as

OFF GRID: THE WAY TO GO? “Is it a risky move to buy a property that’s totally off grid?”

OFF-GRID is an example of shifting priorities. Previously it conjured up images of a rustic – or rusty – cabin in some remote backwater, lit by candles or kerosene lamps, cooking on a wood stove or open fire. But no more. Thanks to technological advances, off-grid today is far more sophisticated with solar panels and backup batteries providing sufficient and affordable energy to run a full home, day and night, year-round. And off-grid is not the sole domain of remote rural properties. Many residential homes are disconnecting from the grid, not simply to curb sky-rocketing energy prices, or leave a lighter footprint, but, in the face of grid overload during our increasingly hot summers, to take control over their energy supply. Mincemeat, Emphasis on the Meat

THIS year as you sit down to a well-deserved cup of tea and a mince pie, or leave a plate out for Santa, take a moment to think about the centuries of history behind this Christmas staple.

During the medieval period it was common to mix meat or even fish with expensive imported ingredients like sugar, dried fruit and spices.

Recipes of this type, sometimes called ‘shrid’ pies, are included in some of the earliest English recipe collections.

By the end of the 16th century the pies had acquired both their modern name (‘minst pyes’ in The Good Haus-wives Treasurie, 1588) and the strong connection with Christmas which meant they were sometimes also called Christmas pies.

Early modern recipes continued to have a good proportion of meat - veal or beef, mutton or even tongue - but they called for more and more fruit, spices and sugar.

Shipped from the Middle East, the East Indies and the Americas, these ingredients were a way to show off wealth and good taste.

For families that could only afford them once or twice a year then Christmas was the time.

Since then, as those ingredients became cheaper and as the combination of meat and sweet fruit became less fashionable the meat has all but disappeared from mince pies.

The only reminders of mince pies' meaty history are the name, and the suet (kidney fat) which is still found in many recipes but can be

replaced with butter for vegetarians.

If you’re not avoiding meat this season, however, why not add some meat to your mince pies with this seventeenth century recipe?

Not only does it cut down on the sickly sweetness of modern mince pies, but it’ll be a great conversation starter over a glass of eggnog.

The following is a mincemeat recipe based on My Lady of Portland’s Mince Pyes from ‘The Closet of Sir Kenelm Digby, Knight Opened’ (1669).

113g cooked beef, veal or tongue, diced (great for using up leftovers from roast beef or lamb or similar) 227g suet 170g currants Peel of 1/8 lemon, diced 2/3 green apple, cored and grated 1 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg 1/3 tsp mace, grated 1 tsp ground cloves 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 cup rosewater 40g sugar 1/4 cup sherry Candied citron and orange peel, sliced Dates, sliced Caraway seeds To make the mincemeat, combine the meat, suet, currants, lemon, apple, ground spices, sugar and rosewater in a large bowl.

Magic pudding and honouring memories

LOVE it or hate it, the classic Christmas pudding is an iconic part of the festive season.

Fruit, nuts, brandy, flour, butter, spices and sugar come together to make a hulking monolith which dominates the Christmas dessert table.

My Nan would make a Christmas pudding every year and it was served on Christmas Eve after our customary walk to look at the local Christmas lights.

The process would start a good month or so ahead, with the fruit being soaked in a liberal helping of brandy.

When mixing the ingredients together, Nan would invite us to make a wish.

As we got older, we would give the pudding a stir and think of every person who was no longer with us.

Once the ingredients were

mixed together, the mixture would be poured into a square of calico cloth and boiled in an old aluminium pot for six hours.

The cooked pudding was then hung from a cupboard door knob in the corner of the kitchen for several weeks before Christmas.

Come Christmas Eve, the pudding was boiled again for an hour, then Nan would perform the impressive feat of pouring burning brandy over the pudding.

The flames would burn blue due to the ethanol in the brandy, and Mum always worried that the house would catch fire.

Us kids were always mesmerised by the blue flames, which flared up over the pudding and only lasted for a few seconds.

Unfortunately, my Nan died in October 2020 and Christmas has not been quite the same without her.

I wanted to try to recapture some of the magic we experienced

as kids when we spent Christmas with her and my Grandad at their home in Wollongong.

So, I set about making Nan’s famous pudding.

I ended up making two smaller puddings so that I only had to boil them for three hours.

My sister, who doesn’t drink alcohol, gave me a spare bottle of Black Bottle brandy that belonged to my Grandad.

He would drink anything, but particularly loved brandy and dry ginger ale.

As I put the puddings into the boiler, I realised I’d forgotten to add the almonds!

Oh well, they can go into the brandy butter.

Nan’s Christmas recipe comes from the Commonsense Cookery Book.

She would add 10-12 eggs, but I found this can make the

pudding quite stodgy, which is not ideal after a big heavy meal in an Australian summer, so I stuck to eight.

For those who don’t like brandy, rum or fruit juice can be used instead.

Other dried fruits can be added to the mix, such as chopped dates or glace ginger.

Christmas Pudding Ingredients 1kg mixed fruit 125g blanched almonds 500g butter 500g brown sugar 8 eggs ⅔ cup brandy 250g soft fresh breadcrumbs (you can grate a few slices of bread) 250g plain flour Pinch of salt 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp nutmeg 2 tsp mixed spice Method Fill up a large pot with water and put it on the stove to boil.

MY husband recently bought me a new pair of jeggings, as a birthday gift.

They were rather expensive, and I appreciate the thought, but I'm afraid that they hug my thighs and stomach a bit too closely.

I don't want to add them to my wardrobe, but I can't bear to hurt his feelings.

What am I to do?

Fanny J. Dear Fanny J, The first problem we have here, apart from the multiple word plays I could riff off using your name and your conundrum, is that your husband bought you jeggings as a birthday gift.

The number of things that could go wrong with this ill-conceived purchase are as immeasurable as the ways jeggings are appropriated for real pieces of clothing.

Do you ever sit at home, or on the bus, and wonder about how something was invented?

I mean, imagine the day someone glanced down from the fetlock of his horse, to its hoof and thought, 'I don't know what I can use to stick these two sheets of paper together, but I reckon the answer will be found by grinding down bits of this fine animal.'

Jeggings, for those who don't know, are basically tights printed to look like jeans, but don't be fooled.

They are not jeans.

They don't have zips.

They don't have any support.

You can't tuck a shirt into them.

Jeggings are an optical illusion that leave about as much to the imagination as body paint.

And, as you've found, Fanny J, they don't hold in your stomach and thighs, they accentuate them.

They are about as adorable as the idea of grown-ups wandering around in Wondersuits (an outfit that looks appropriate on babies, but positively creepy on anyone who has gone beyond their first birthday).

I wouldn't be too worried about hurting your husband's feelings.

He doesn't seem to have much regard for yours if he's going to allow you to saunter around town leaving nothing to the imagination, and, after a few washes when the elastic gives way, trotting along like a denim-sprayed Shar Pei. Many hybrids don't work for good reason.

Keep your jeans as jeans, your leggings for exercise, and shun the cruel and twisted fashionista who thought mixing the two was a good idea.

Carpe diem, Jasminda. pastry cases and fill them with mincemeat then place slices of candied citrus peel and a sprinkle of caraway seeds before covering with the lid.

You can make either more modern small pies or, for a more traditional feel, make one large pie in a pie-tin.

Add the breadcrumbs, sifted flour, salt, bicarb, nutmeg and mixed spice, and mix it thoroughly.

Tie up in a square of unbleached calico cloth, placing the tie about 10cm or so away from the pudding so that it can swell up.

The mixture can also be placed into a two litre pudding basin, allowing space for the pudding to swell.

Boil for six hours.

On the day of eating, boil for 3 hours (you can do this first thing in the morning Christmas day or

after lunch Christmas Eve) Two smaller puddings can be boiled for three hours on the first cook, then 90 minutes on the day of eating.

The secret to a successful pudding flame is to warm the brandy gently on the stove before using a kitchen lighter or long matches to light the vapour.

Have your phone ready for a video, as this spectacular effect only lasts a couple of seconds!

Hopefully I made Nan proud, and by sharing this recipe with you all, it has evoked my own memories of the fun family Christmases I had with my grandparents.

CRICKET grounds across the State will be awash with the finest emerging cricketers from regional NSW and the ACT with four youth Championships to be contested during December and January.

During the summer school holidays, Country Cricket NSW, with support from Cricket NSW, will stage the McDonald's Under 16 Female Country Championships (20 – 21 December), Under 16 Male Bradman Cup (4 – 7 January), McDonald's Under 19 Women’s Country Championships (5 – 7 January), and the Under 18 Country Colts (10 – 13 January).
