Shirley O’Brien Pathway Opened In Honour Of Anna Bay Legend

‘AUNTY Shirl’ Shirley O’Brien was a stalwart of the Anna Bay Community and her contribution to the region went far beyond serving the community as a Councillor.

Simply put Shirley O’Brien served her community and was keen to see it better connected.

She has been honoured for her services to the community of Port Stephens and Anna Bay by having the pathway which connects Nelson Bay Road to James Patterson Street providing a safe and vital link to the Seawind Over 50’s Village to the township.

Shirley O’Brien passed away in October 2019 and has been remembered as a passionate community member who served on Council from 2008 to 2012.

Mayor Ryan Palmer officially opened the Shirley O’Brien Path, which runs along Gan Gan Road from Nelson Bay Road to James Patterson Street, at a small ceremony attended by passionate Anna Bay locals.

The proposal to name the pathway came from Aunty Shirl’s community and was made possible by Councillor Chris Doohan’s actions.

Members of the Anna Bay community turned out in force to be present to see their Aunty Shirl honoured.

‘Aunty Shirl’, was known as a strong advocate for this pathway to better connect the villages near Nelson Bay Road to the town centre.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “Shirley’s passing left a huge hole in the local community.

“She served her community as a Councillor, was a founding member of the Birubi Surf Life Saving Club and was actively involved in helping to make Anna Bay a better place.

“Naming this footpath on behalf of Shirley O’Brien is an honour and pleasure,” he said.

It found the additional social housing would generate savings of $122.5 million in a year due to women not returning to a violent partner and a further $257 million in a year in savings due to women not experiencing homelessness after leaving their homes due to family and domestic violence.

“More than 9,000 women and children face homelessness each year after leaving a violent partner. As this report highlights, many simply have nowhere to go.

“Victims and survivors of domestic and family violence are often criticised for returning to their abusive partners but an overwhelming majority have to choose between that and homelessness.”

Stable housing is critical to their safety and wellbeing.

“Ideally, women would stay in their homes and perpetrators would be removed during instances of family violence.

“By building more social housing, the Federal Government can inject billions of dollars into our economy, create tens of thousands of jobs and prove it is serious about helping victims of domestic and family violence.”

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “This report couldn’t be clearer - social housing not only saves lives but saves the government money as well.

“Women and children escaping domestic violence need somewhere safe to live, otherwise, tragically, they will continue to experience violence.

“This conclusion seems so obvious, yet the government continues to fail to invest in social housing.

“I was sickened to see in this year’s budget, the Berejiklian Government only allocated a miserable $67,000 to social housing for Port Stephens.

“The Liberal National Government knows the risks women and children face due to a lack of social and affordable housing.

“But, it’s just not a priority for them,” she said.

COVID-19 Delta Hits Hard In Regions

COVID-19 has changed the face of the region as Sydney and Victoria battle the deadly Delta strain.

Here, little has changed but it could be only a matter of time.

As seen in Victoria the regions are vulnerable with Melbourne’s cases now exposing Mildura and nearby us a 7-eleven in Thornton has been an exposure site, which for many is just too close to home.

Dr David Durrheim, Hunter New England Public Health Controller, COVID-19 Response said, “We would like to advise the community that the 7-Eleven at 1 Weakleys Drive, Thornton has been identified as a low risk exposure site.

“Anyone who attended the 7-Eleven between 12.05pm and 12.11pm on Tuesday 13 July is a casual contact who must immediately get tested and selfisolate until a negative result is received.

“The risk to the broader community from this exposure is very low.

“CCTV indicates that masks were worn at all times and there was good social distancing.

“It is important that we all remain vigilant and comply with current restrictions.

“Anyone who has experienced fever or the recent onset of respiratory symptoms, including a cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, sore throat, or loss of taste and smell, should seek testing immediately and isolate until a negative result is returned,” he said.

Yet, still there are many who are not convinced about vaccination or lockdowns, as witnessed when a man was found asleep in the back of his vehicle at Hawks Nest, having travelled from Sydney’s Turramurra against the public health orders to reportedly get some “peace and quiet”.

The man was issued with a $1,000 PIN before being told to return home.

Sydney is now looking down the barrel of weeks of a hard lockdown and for local businesses this means loss of trade.

which has been reflected in reduced hours for many workers.

However there is a lifeline which is coming for business and for workers.

While not as simple for workers it is similar to Jobkeeper with workers who lose more than 20 hours entitled to a payment of $600 per week and for those that lose between 8-20 hours a payment of $375.

Businesses are now able to access grants to help keep them afloat across the entire state as the impact of the Sydney lockdown has hit the regions hard.

But it is not all bad news for locals.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has thanked NSW residents for their patience.

She spoke of the importance of surveillance testing particularly for those working in health or aged care.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said, “Regional rural NSW where the health system would be completely swamped if we had an outbreak that was similar to Sydney.

“That is why the restrictions we have in Sydney are significant to minimise travel to the regions,” he said.

The current restrictions which apply to regional NSW are; face masks must be worn in all indoor venues, vertical consumption of

drinks indoors is prohibited; household gatherings are capped at five visitors; dancing is only permitted at weddings - up to 20 people in the bridal party; all indoor and outdoor venues must revert to the foursquare-metre rule; outdoor seated events limited to 50 per cent capacity; singing is prohibited at indoor places of worship and gym/ dance classes limited to 20 attendees who must wear mask.

New Chair For Hunter New England Health District

By Marian SAMPSON NEVER before has NSW Health been under such pressure and while Sydney is where the majority of the impact of COVID has been, that doesn’t mean the Hunter New England Health District hasn’t had its challenges in recent times.

Hunter New England Local Health District has welcomed the appointment of Dr Martin Cohen as Chair of the District’s Board, by Minister for Health and Medical Research, Brad Hazzard.

The Hunter New England Health District covers a vast geographic area and faces many challenges serving communities across such an area.

Our local communities are served by John Hunter Hospital, The Mater and the Tomaree Community Hospital.

Dr Cohen takes over from Associate Professor Lyn Fragar AO, who has served in the position since 2011.

“I am delighted that Dr Cohen has been appointed as Board Chair,” Michael DiRienzo, Chief Executive Hunter New England Local Health District said.

“A serving board member since 2016, Dr Cohen has more

than 25 years’ clinical experience as a psychiatrist, with five years as an Executive Director for Hunter New England Local Health District.

“He is also a Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle.

“Dr Cohen has the passion and experience to successfully lead the Board’s oversight of health services for our local communities,” Mr DiRienzo said.

“I have no doubt his skills and experience will add tremendous value to the Board.”

Dr Cohen said he is focused on ensuring the District develops sound partnerships between clinical leaders, managers and the community to meet the current and future health needs of the community.

"Having had the privilege to serve as the Chair of the Quality and Safety Committee of the Board for several years now, I feel honoured to have been appointed by the Minister for Health to the role of Chair,” Dr Cohen said.

“Our key strategy is to ensure excellent care for every person who touches our health services, often at times of great stress, distress and need, and for this to occur consistently without exception.

“I look forward to working with our Chief Executive, Michael DiRienzo, and the Executive Directors, to ensure the positive

evolution of Health Services for the people of Hunter New England Local Health District,” he said.

Mr DiRienzo also paid tribute to outgoing Board Chair, Associate Professor Lyn Fragar.

“The District is grateful for her leadership over the past ten years.

“Associate Professor Fragar is a passionate advocate for health and has led positive changes within our District, including improved patient care, particularly in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic; workforce recruitment and retention and improved

THE Combined Probus Club of Medowie was fortunate to have a function to celebrate their eighteenth birthday of the Club in July.

Management at The Greenhouse at Pacific Dunes were able to comply with Covid-19 protocols and host the function.

The function provided members the opportunity to celebrate with other members, without however, the ability to mingle.

The Club has also been fortunate

to continue to hold their meetings at the Medowie Community Centre, with a Covid Protocol in the Centre to meet both Council and Probus requirements.

Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 10.00 am and retirees, and semi-retirees are welcome.

Guest speakers are usually in attendance at each meeting and the aim is to apply the Probus Mantra.

The mantra of Probus is Fellowship, Fun and Friendship and particularly in the current situation provides a break from the feeling of isolation.

Memories of Afghanistan

THE withdrawal of military coalition forces from Afghanistan has the world wondering what lies ahead.

A peaceful transition to a democratic government?

Perhaps factional power plays will see the country plunged into internal conflict.

Only time will tell.

For former Major Jim Horton OAM, his time spent there was rewarding as part of a United Nations mine clearance operation.

“When the Russians departed after 16 years occupying the country, they left as many as ten million anti

personnel and anti tank mines which had to be cleared,” Mr Horton said.

“Our job was to train the Afghanis to do this dangerous work.

“Ten of them died and around 70 were maimed by mines, some of which were booby trapped,” he remarked.

“There were just nine of us and we were able to put together some 30 local clearance teams.

“Each consisted of around 100 individuals and we travelled all over the various provinces.

“In the more remote districts, we discarded our uniforms and dressed as tribesmen, complete with long beards as some of the Mujahideen

were very suspicious and a bit trigger happy,” he stated.

After 35 years in the army Jim has devoted over 20 years of his time as an advocate for veterans' pensions and Legacy.

He was also President of the Lemon Tree Passage RSL sub branch.

He and his dedicated team still work out of their office in Tanilba Bay caring for veterans, ex-service members and their families.

Karuah Community To Meet The Candidates

PORT Stephens Council elections are looming and there are plenty of people interested in who is running and what they will do for the community.

The residents of Karuah have always been on the edge of the Port Stephens LGA, and now they are seeing their town move from West Ward to Central Ward for the elections.

Fred McInerney of the Karuah Working Together Committee and Karuah Progress Association told News Of The Area, “Karuah is one of Port Stephens smaller townships and residents often feel left out and sometimes wonder whether the councillors know we exist or where Karuah is.”

The Karuah Progress Association and Karuah Working Together Committee will be hosting a “Meet The Candidates Forum” at

the Karuah RSL club on Monday 9 August 2021 at 6.00pm.

“A common comment about election time is who are they and how do we know who to vote for.

“So this time the fact that Karuah has been moved out of West Ward into Central Ward it has been decided to invite all candidates for Central ward, and for the Mayoral position,

will be new to us and so we invite them to introduce themselves so the community have the chance to see and hear them, and to ask them questions,” he said.

Positive Behaviour Focus on Caring and Kindness

THE Positive Behaviour and Learning (PBL) Program has been a huge success in Raymond Terrace and the West and Central Wards of the Port Stephens Local Government Area.

Students are very proud to be nominated for the awards and schools and the community have seen a shift in students actions not only at school but in the community

since the introduction of the program.

Nine local schools take part in the program which has long been supported by MarketPlace at Raymond Terrace.

This week we saw an amazing group of students nominated by their school for the PBL Award.

Harmony Brooks of Grahamstown Public School and Archer Watt of Karuah Public School were both

nominated for their efforts in keeping the environment in which they live clean.

Compassion was also high on this week's reasons for being nominated.

Sophie Taylor of Seaham Public School and Allira Waterman of Hunter River High were both nominated for their compassion and kindness to others.

Being helpful was also high on the list of qualities

It’s On! wraps up July

By Tara CAMPBELL NELSON Bay’s newest incentive ‘It’s On!’ is wrapping up its first month of activities with two more weeks of fun.

The program, supported by Port Stephens Council, is designed to get people out and about, trying new things in the heart of Port Stephens.

A representative from

the program said, “Over the next six months we’ll be trialling unique experiences to support local businesses and attract people to the town centre.”

It’s On! has already had success with activities including: lunchtime acoustics, Saturday sessions, bootcamps, yoga and ‘Kidzone’ with Reptile displays, Koala talks and giant games.

The final two weeks of the July program have the following activities

scheduled: Tuesday 20 and 27 JulyBootcamp at Apex Park at 7am.

By Marian SAMPSON STUDENTS at Fern Bay Public School are getting into a new challenge that is putting smiles on faces and building skills.

The students in Fern Bay Public School’s KB and K/1T classes have embarked on the Mascot Challenge for the next four weeks.

The program is being delivered by Cricket Australia and it is a free four week program that can be completed at home or in the classroom.

Students spend 10 minutes a day developing fundamental motor skills, which help lay the foundation for them to lead a healthy and active life.

Emily True of Fern Bay Public School told News Of The Area, “The Program is a flexible self-delivered program so teachers can use it as a brain break, PE or even peer support activity.”

Learn to write for the NOTA TELLING the incredible stories of Port Stephens and the Myall Coast is what News Of The Area (NOTA) is all about.

The NOTA has been a staple of the region for decades, keeping locals up to date with the happenings of the area.

Now, NOTA is seeking enthusiastic locals with a background in writing to join the team.

“If you have a background in writing, and a passion for your local community, I would love to hear from you,” said NOTA Editor Douglas Connor.

Aware that a shift to news writing may be a daunting prospect for locals with a passion for the written word, Mr Connor is seeking expressions of interest for news writing workshops, hosted by the NOTA in the Port Stephens area.

The small-group, intimate workshops would cover all aspects of covering local news within Port Stephens; from headline writing, writing to news style, grammar, interview skills and more.

These free sessions will give any keen writer the necessary skills to start covering the issues that matter to local people.

Writing for NOTA can be an amazing way to connect with your local community, to meet some of the awe-inspiring locals creating change in the area, and to learn and experience the unique elements of life in Port Stephens.

Veteran NOTA reporter Marian Sampson, who has reported on local issues on the Myall Coast and Port Stephens for four years, said the role allowed her freedom, and new opportunities.

“Writing for News Of The Area has been a wonderful opportunity for me.

“I have become further connected to my community and importantly those who care passionately about their causes.

“I have had the privilege to meet some amazing people who are doing amazing things locally and internationally.

“From people like Wendy Stein who is changing the landscape of women's health in PNG to November Sheehan who is bringing joy to older people in care across Australia simply through a simple card, to meeting the Prime Minister and getting to throw him a question (you have to be quick!) I get to meet so many people who passionately advocate for our community.

“I am valued and respected by my community as is the publication.

“As a NOTA reporter I write when I like and choose the stories that are of interest to me and my community. I choose my own hours and I can work from anywhere,” Marian said.

Tara Campbell joined NOTA as a reporter in 2020, and said covering the region for the newspaper had expanded her horizons.

“Writing for the NOTA allows me to meet hundreds of unique people from all different walks of life, people that I wouldn’t have ever connected with if I wasn’t working here.

“I love making genuine connections and visiting different places to help the community tell their stories.

“Although it has pushed me out of my comfort zone, it has always rewarded me with friendly faces, authentic characters and a development of my career as a journalist,” Tara said.

‘The Sunshine Life’ Supporting Red Nose Day

FOR most families the arrival of a little one is a joy that lasts, with milestones celebrated along the way.

The first day at school, graduating, getting a drivers licence and even getting married and having a child of their own.

Sadly for the StefanishSmith family this was not the case.

Jess Stefanish-Smith has bravely shared her story with News Of The Area.

“My husband Rob and I had two beautiful children, Sara and Josef.

“In January 2019, we found out we were expecting our third child.

“We knew we were pregnant from very early on. It felt like such a long pregnancy but one filled with excitement and anticipation.

“Sara and Josef nicknamed the baby ‘Sunshine’.

“We had a healthy pregnancy and birth,” Jess said.

Matthew Frank StefanishSmith was born on 25 September 2019 and his

siblings Sara and Josef were absolutely besotted with their little brother.

“On the night of 19 November, we did our regular nightly routine.

“In the middle of the night I woke up and noticed Matthew looked a little strange in his cot.

“He had stopped breathing.

“We immediately called Triple 0.

“Despite our immediate CPR and the efforts of ambulance officers, our Matthew didn’t make it.”

The family was supported by their wonderful family and community who rallied around them, giving their love and support and helping out with the older children with the provision of a ‘meal train’.

“After all of the formalities and funeral had taken place, we connected with Red Nose for grief counselling.

“The support we were given by Red Nose was invaluable.

“They helped us navigate the many challenges we faced in the processing of

our own grief and emotions and guiding our children through their emotions and understandings, working through our feelings of confusion and guilt as life around us moves forward.

“At times we felt stuck, celebrating birthdays and holidays yet our hearts burdened, missing a person taken too soon.

“Red Nose helped us to be kind, lenient and understanding to ourselves and being compassionate and understanding to your partner because they grieve differently.”

In May 2021, the family were blessed to welcome their fourth child, Benjamin into the world and he will be told of a beautiful boy who inspires the family’s mission of awareness and support.

“The most heartbreaking thing I have found in my journey is that infant and child loss through miscarriage, stillbirth and SIDS affects more people we know than what we realise.

MEDOWIE Football Club has been saddened by the loss of lifetime member Alan Morris.

Alan, and his late wife Gail, moved to Medowie nearly 40 years ago when it was a lot smaller than today and you knew mostly everyone!

Alan, along with his late wife Gail, had been involved with Medowie Football Club since the early 1980’s.

There were several Medowie families back then who were always putting their hand up to help and the Morris family were one of them!

Over the many, many years Alan was involved with the soccer club he not only coached his own children’s teams but he also found time to coach the all-age men and the women’s teams when no one else would.

Alan held many positions on the Medowie Football Club committee including Treasurer and Secretary.

Alan and his wife played a huge part in helping the soccer club at Yulong Oval grow and be a place for soccer players, both young and old, to come and enjoy their love of soccer while developing their skills and creating lifelong friendships.

COVID Enforced Isolation Negatively Impacting Those With Dementia

COVID-19 is changing the face of life for those living with dementia.

Dementia Australia is calling on the community, including health and aged care staff, to work together to maintain engagement with people impacted by dementia during this time of enforced isolation.

Dementia Australia Acting CEO Anthony Boffa said people living with dementia are some of the

most vulnerable people in our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ramping up the focus on engagement and communication at this time of restricted physical contact is vital for all of us, but especially for people living with dementia,” Mr Boffa said.

“If stimulus is reduced for people living with dementia the loss of cognitive function can escalate.

“Over time these are losses that most people will

People living with dementia, their families and carers have told Dementia Australia that some residential aged care facilities have not been able to offer appropriate alternatives to essential visits and this has resulted in poor physical and psychological outcomes for residents with dementia.

Mr Boffa said it is crucial that all those working in aged care, especially in Victoria and New South Wales, are extra vigilant in providing care for people living with dementia to protect them from the risk of COVID-19 and social isolation.

“During this time, the aged care sector is under increasing stress.

“For those impacted by dementia, there will be an added layer of anxiety,” Mr Boffa said.

“With recent data

suggesting that just over two thirds of all people living in residential aged care have moderate to severe cognitive impairment, this must be adequately addressed.

"It is vital that people who provide essential care to loved ones with dementia are not excluded from giving care at this time.

"People living in residential aged care have the right to assistance to stay connected with their loved ones, even when visitor restrictions are in place.

“We encourage staff to involve families wherever they can to actively plan for different forms of engagement and methods of communication.

Dementia Australia supports the 472,000 Australians living with dementia and the 1.6 million people involved in their care.

Residents are hopeful that Council will listen to them in relation to changing their plans to install the two Skillion roofs which will block the very open views of Shoal Bay. Residents have been seeking an actual Visual Impact Statement for the work but have been unsuccessful in obtaining one from Council.

The belief of the residents is that the roof line will create glare and not fit with the ambience of the seaside village.

Councillor John Nell said, “I haven’t seen anything, I have been making enquiries and I am wanting to see the first plan.

“I want to see it up.

“That annoys me totally, that I haven’t seen it.

“If a mistake has been made in design and installation we will have to fix it,” he said.

Council Works Cause Angst RESIDENTS and businesses in Shoal Bay are yet again on high alert as Council’s works on the foreshore cause angst.

From parklets that didn’t make the grade to structures with skillion roof lines which will block views, residents feel that the Council is coming up short in regards to the needs and wants of Shoal Bay residents and businesses.

The remediated footpath works has had mixed reviews to date and with work not yet completed.

A petition has been created in Shoal Bay seeking to stop the installation of the sun shelters which will sit over concrete pads on the newly leveled foreshore area.

The petition has been signed by over 100 foreshore residents and these residents have been able to secure Public Access at the next Port Stephens Council Meeting on

Tom Priestley, Last of the Shark Men

Today, the control of these apex predators by netting is frowned upon, but last century it was very much in favour, indeed an industry was established in Port Stephens which had a dramatic impact on their numbers.

from Tanilba Bay worked at the shark processing plant at Pindimar in the 1930s and the story of this venture is told in a now rare book entitled 'Fangs of the Sea', written in 1939 by Norman Caldwell.

In his book, Caldwell describes Tommy Priestley as “... a splendid type of Australian boy and a great worker”.

Interviewed before he died, Tom said, “We meshed for sharks in the port itself and up and down the coast.

“The sharks were hunted mainly for their skins but the fins were sold to Asia

to make soup and the livers rendered down for their oil,” he added.

“Our first shot was in Salamander Bay and we hauled in 30 sharks but our record was off Morna Point where we caught 229 in just one week,” he stated.

Sydney was plagued by shark attacks and when Coogee Beach had a shark proof net installed, some 800,000 bathers visited it in the first four months.

To illustrate the danger, the company dispatched one of their boats to Bondi Beach where two sunken nets were left in place overnight.

29 sharks, which included a 16 foot (4.8 metre) tiger shark, were hauled on board the next morning.

After one successful trip to Seal Rocks the company's 30 foot (9 metre) boat ran into heavy weather and had to dump its catch and run for shelter.

Tom explained the reason for the enterprise shutting down.

“We just ran out of sharks!” he said.

“Each season we had to travel farther up and down the coast and the hauls were getting smaller each time,” he remarked.

The Pindimar works reopened as a fish and oyster cannery but it was burnt down in 1938.

Remnants of the wharf lasted until the 1970s.

New South Wales residents are urged to turn in any unregistered or unwanted guns and ammunition to their nearest police station or arms dealer, as part of an ongoing firearms amnesty, which commenced on 1 July.

The amnesty protects those who turn in unregistered weapons from prosecution.

No penalty is incurred for turning in an unregistered

firearm.

Old weapons which no longer work, gel blasters, crossbows and other illegal or unwanted weapons and accessories can also be handed in as part of the amnesty.

Before taking the gun to the dealer or police station, the gun must be unloaded and the bolt removed, if possible, to render it safe for handling.

The firearm can then be placed into a gun bag or wrapped in a blanket or towel for transportation.

Any ammunition to be surrendered must be stored separately to the firearm,

but can be transported at the same time.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said the introduction of a permanent national amnesty sends a clear message that community safety is paramount.

“This new permanent amnesty will allow community members to surrender for destruction unwanted or unregistered firearms and ammunition cost free,” said Mr Elliott.

Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook, the Police Prosecutions and Licensing Enforcement Commander, is

encouraging gun owners to surrender or register their firearms.

$100M Stimulus Program Supporting Hunter Jobs

This is a broad question.

There's a big difference between a Labrador sitting patiently waiting for a bit of pork gristle and a Poodle yelping underfoot and making everyone agitated.

It really depends on how well-behaved the pet is.

My own dog has better table manners than some of my family members.

She doesn’t leave food on her plate, she doesn’t text at the table or argue about cleaning up after the meal, and she certainly doesn’t complain that we are eating chicken two nights in a row.

Instead, she sits quietly, usually at the feet of the weakest link, and receives furtive treats.

It’s lovely that you eat together as a family at the table instead of balancing your meals on your lap in front of the tele, so I’d suggest that your degustation manners are in fact superior to many others, with or without your furry companion.

LOCALS are benefitting from the NSW Government’s $100 million stimulus spend to accelerate shovel-ready road and maintenance works, with seven projects now delivered across the Hunter.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter said the project were among 150 road and rail projects to be delivered under stimulus, funded by the NSW Government's $2.3 billion COVID-19 package announced last March, to help keep regional economies ticking and to create local jobs.

“The Accelerated Capital Maintenance program was designed to fast-track projects and proved to be a lifeline for our community - delivering safer roads and stronger freight and rail connections, as well as creating local jobs when they were needed most,” Mr Martin said.

“The package allowed Transport for NSW to bring forward and deliver projects

in addition to its planned program of work.

“As well as underpinning regional jobs, we have also been able to engage local suppliers across NSW, providing a muchneeded boost for businesses in the bush.”

Projects delivered under this funding program locally include $431,275 for the resurfacing of 700 metres of Raymond Terrace Road at East Maitland and an additional $300,000 for the patching of sections of Raymond Terrace Road.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the 150 projects provided a critical boost to regional economies feeling the effects of COVID-19.

“Right across the State, this program alone has delivered 400 kilometres of rumble strips, which reduce the risk of head-on and run-off-road crashes by up to 25 percent, upgraded 200 kilometres of rail line, and improved carparks and customer

amenities at more than 15 regional railway stations,” Mr Toole said.

“Bringing these projects forward through stimulus funding has given our regional communities a real shot-in-the-arm, especially those who have suffered a triple whammy of drought, bushfires and COVID-19.”

PARENTS, carers and community members supporting young people experiencing mental health challenges can register to attend a free mental health workshop hosted by headspace, thanks to a $1.2 million investment by the NSW Government.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the workshops will help parents and carers better understand the unique challenges facing young people and how to access appropriate support.

“We want everyone in the community to have the opportunity to learn more about the experiences of young people so they can be supportive of the children in their lives as well as becoming strong advocates for positive mental health in the community,” Mr Martin said.

“This is about improving mental health literacy in the community in areas such as recognising danger signs, learning shareable coping skills and accessing local support services.”

Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor said the sessions will benefit the whole community.

“These sessions are for any parent or carer who is worried about their child and doesn’t know how to start a conversation about what’s going on in their lives,” Mrs Taylor said.

“We’re building a safer, stronger NSW, and these workshops will address local challenges, point the way to local support services and allow the community to ask

questions about what they can do to help young people who are struggling.”

Headspace CEO Jason Trethowan said understanding suicide will also be a key part of the training.

“Many young people have thoughts of suicide when life seems unbearable and they can’t imagine another way out of what they are going through,” Mr Trethowan said.

“The vast majority of these young people will not act on those thoughts, but we want parents and carers to be able to talk about such thoughts in a way that doesn’t inadvertently shame the young person or encourage them to stay silent.”

Referee Recognition Week NORTHERN NSW Football has launched its 2021 Newcastle Permanent Referee Recognition Week with the theme of showing respect to match officials.

The week, from Monday 19 July to Sunday 25 July, is Northern NSW Football’s annual celebration of match officials and provides the football community with the chance to express their gratitude and appreciation for referees and their assistants.

The week is also a reminder that match officials are valued members of the football family to be respected by players, coaches, volunteers and supporters.

Northern NSW Football Head of Football Development Peter Haynes said the annual initiative, devised by NNSWF’s longterm community partner Newcastle Permanent, aimed to highlight the role of match officials across northern NSW and encouraged members of the football community to

show their appreciation.

“Officiating a match is often a thankless task. But without our referees we wouldn’t be able to play our beautiful game,” Haynes said.

“Referees and assistant referees play a key role in not just allowing players to go out and play but also keeping our players safe.

“Then there are our referee assessors and coaches who are also such a vital part of our sport as they help teach and educate our referees of the future.

“We encourage all our members to show their respect and appreciation towards our referees during the week, particularly thanking them for their efforts in ensuring a safe environment, underlined by a sense of fair play, for everyone.”

“It’s certainly been a big change,” Keira said.

“Usually in the mornings in Hawks Nest my mum and I would go for a walk up to the beach but this morning we went for a walk along the riverside and it’s strange because there’s so many cars and people.”

“It’s all very different,” she said.

Although she’s a long way from home, Keira still has her eye on the prize with the goal of making it into the World Juniors, an event for athletes under twenty.

“The qualifying time is 11.8 seconds, and although I’m still young and have time to work on it, I did 12.1 seconds last year,” Keira told News Of The Area.

“I’m only 0.3 seconds off that and I’m hoping this year to get under 12 seconds to be close to that mark,” she said.

Balancing school and a lot of training, Keira is busily scheduling her way to success.

For many years Keira has sprinted her way to victory, receiving a number of awards including a recent silver

After hearing about the school from one of the girls Keira used to train with, her family began looking into it and it wasn’t long until she earned a place at St Peter's College with a sports scholarship.
