Raymond Terrace local rides for mental health awareness revelation.” For the past 20 years, Ian has navigated mental illness, being admitted to mental health facilities on a number of occasions.

"I ride not just for myself, but for those who continue to fight their battles in the shadows,” he said. “As I ride, I carry with me the collective support of those who believe in the power of resilience, in the

triumph of the human spirit. "Amidst the chaos, one constant emerged as my beacon of hope: cycling. “Pedalling through the winding roads became more than just a pastime; it evolved into a vital form of therapy, a lifeline tethering me to sanity.” Ian is aiming to raise

$10,000 for Lifeline Hunter in the hope of covering the cost of 256 crisis support calls. Every call answered costs Lifeline $39. Lifeline answers over one million calls a year to the crisis support line -13 11 14 - from people across Australia reaching out for

FACING the lowest housing affordability and availability levels in decades, the State Government has announced a comprehensive review of short-term rental accommodation (STRA) in NSW, with Councils welcoming the decision. The review will consider the adequacy of the STRA planning and regulatory framework, and options for improvement. Local Government NSW (LGNSW) President Cr Darriea Turley said councils had been seeking changes to the regulations governing the industry for a number of years. “LGNSW welcomes the review and looks forward to

direct engagement on behalf of our members on this critically important issue,” Cr Turley said. “Councils want to have the ability to respond flexibly in this area to balance housing needs as well as the local visitor economy.” The review will also consider policy options to incentivise the use of vacant property and holiday homes for long-term residency. Cr Turley said an outcome of the review needed to be returning more of the existing housing stock to the longterm rental market. "We think this will be the fastest way to provide immediate relief to housing pressures," she said.

While the Government admits the review and potential reform of STRA alone is “not a silver bullet”, the review is seen as an important step towards fixing existing structural issues in the housing market. “All options are on the table and we are keen to hear from the community on how various aspects of regulatory and revenue measures can be designed to get the best outcome,” Minister for Housing and Minister for Homelessness Rose Jackson said. “This review will inform our approach to make better use of all forms of housing, including short term rentals, vacant property and holiday

homes. “This includes looking at ways to move some of this housing to the longterm rental market and to minimise its negative impacts on the housing market as well as what we can do to support homelessness services across NSW.” Locally, Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said her electorate is in the grip of a “significant housing and homelessness crisis”. “This is our community’s opportunity to have a say over the future of rules relating to short term rentals in Port Stephens. “I encourage everyone to have your say.” In September last

year, a report by the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) found that short stay accommodation was booming at a time when Australia’s rental crisis was worsening. REIA President Hayden Groves said that in the March quarter, a total of 133,968 short-stay accommodation places were available in Australia, an increase of 3.7 percent over the quarter and 22.8 percent over the previous year. In Port Stephens, shortterm rental numbers grew 6.1 percent in one year to 1,423. “As a crude equation, 133,968 on first glance appears to fill the forecast shortage of dwellings Australia will face by next

financial year of 106,000,” Mr Groves said last September. “While short-stay accommodation has been an essential part of meeting high demand for domestic tourism accommodation, it is a driving factor behind the rental crisis,” he said. “The eastern coast of Australia is the predominant provider of short-term accommodation, and where most of the crucial longterm housing is desperately needed.” Visit www.planningportal. n s w. g o v. a u / d r a f t p l a n s / exhibition/discussion-papershort-and-long-term-rentalaccommodation for more information and to have your say.

Nelson Bay Cinema closes in major loss for Port Stephens movie-lovers

chosen to enter voluntary administration. In doing so Majestic has allowed an external party to assume control over the business and engage with creditors in the hope of finding a viable plan to continue operating. Majestic Cinemas has been in business since 2002 and until this most recent announcement was operating eleven cinemas in NSW and Queensland. The statement outlined some of the core issues that had led to this insolvency process, with much of the problem understandably starting with the global pandemic. “Support from the government, banks and many of our landlords helped us get through the initial Covid-19 period,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, while many industries bounced back from Covid-19 in 2022, we have faced additional challenges caused by the pause in movie production on the back of Covid-19 restrictions, reducing major movie releases by about 30 percent, with revenue also being reduced by the same amount.”

These issues have been further complicated by a lengthy industrial action involving the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. “While 2023 promised to be a better year, the timing of the strikes in Hollywood by the writers and actors in the second half of the year was unfortunate and had a significant impact on the release of major movies, and the effects will continue to be felt in the cinema industry for some time.” Where major cinema chains have been able to weather much of these stresses - in part by pioneering novel cinema events such as screenings of concerts, theatrical productions and an increased profile for foreign films (particularly the Bollywood productions of South East Asia) - regional cinemas have struggled to maintain interest in the movie-going experience. Nelson Bay had barely one week to consider this development, when a second statement was circulated. Referring to the previous announcement, the statement then addressed the situation for Nelson Bay specifically. “Unfortunately, during the process we were unable

to come to terms with the owners of the building and as such it has become clear to the administrators that there was no longer a reasonable prospect of being able to operate this cinema complex profitably and sustainably into the future.” Majestic Cinemas CEO Kieran Dell made clear his disappointment on the development.

“It’s really a shame that we couldn’t find a way to move forward at this location,” he said.

“I think regional cinemas are a really important part of local communities.” When asked about the factors that specifically impacted Nelson Bay, forcing the decision to shut down, Mr Dell said, “At the end of the day it’s because the landlords were not willing to negotiate any further.” “Majestic operates in eleven locations, and in all but three we have been able to reach some kind of agreement with property owners that has allowed us to continue.”

Water main cleaning in Medowie HUNTER WATER contractors are scheduled to clean water mains in Medowie from 26 February to 8 March in an attempt to deliver a lasting improvement to water quality in the area.

“There will be no interruption to water supply during this work, however there may be some short periods of lower than usual water pressure and some minor discolouration while we clean the mains,” a

“There was an offer made, but it was not going to cover the cost of the outgoings for the owners.

“It’s just not a workable situation, unfortunately.” Speaking in support of the owners is the previous business operator Neil Merrin, who sold to Majestic in 2022 and stepped back entirely in December 2023. Addressing unfavourable comments about the property owners from some residents on social media, Neil said, “When Covid forced the cinema to close March 2020,

the landlord immediately suspended the rent and only required me to pay the outgoings which was an effective reduction of about 80 percent. ”As Covid continued to keep us closed, this arrangement was extended to the end of 2020 with no claw back. “For 2021, they gave us a 50 percent reduction for the whole year, and this contributed in a big way to keeping the cinema operating in Nelson Bay. “They are massive contributors to our community with their developments and should be applauded for their support over recent years of the cinema and of Nelson Bay.”

THE New South Wales Government’s Veteran Affairs Department recently announced that 92 projects across the state will receive funding support from the 2023 ANZAC Community Grant Program. The Tomaree Headland Heritage Group is one community organisation benefitting from the program. “This grant will assist us in getting a fantastic new book printed, written by local historian Judy Washington,” said Peter Clough, President of the Tomaree Headland Heritage Group. Judy has spent the last four years researching and writing a manuscript which details a comprehensive history of Tomaree Headland. “I have learned so much about the history of our area and it has been a real labour of love for me to undertake this huge task,” said Judy. While conducting research, drone footage was taken of the area and a World War II observation post was located which was previously unknown and not mapped. “The Nissen huts which were built by Australian forces were subsequently used to house European immigrants arriving in Australia after the war,” Judy explained. With additional funding from the Port Stephens Historical Society and the Royal Australian Historical Society, the Heritage Group are also aiming not only to

supply additional signage and information at the entrance of the Tomaree Lodge site, but also provide the gun emplacement and observation post buildings with some much needed maintenance. The Group are also hoping to locate the original RAAF radar aerial which was positioned at the top of Tomaree Head after the same

Japanese fleet that attacked Pearl Harbour in December 1941 also attacked Darwin in February 1942. Coastal defence batteries were then set up, along with the radar, a barracks where Tomaree Lodge now stands, and a training centre at Little Beach known as HMAS Assault. Mark Balsarini, President of Nelson Bay RSL sub-

Branch, provided written support for the Heritage Group’s funding application. “This is a wonderful opportunity to understand how the headland has evolved over the years,” said Mark. “I, for one, will definitely be buying a copy of the book.” Judy is hoping to release the book within a few months, and with the help of local photographer Jen Newman, will have produced an important historical document for locals and visitors to enjoy.

Varroa mite management plan approved A PLAN to move from Varroa mite eradication to management has been approved. The Varroa Mite National Management Group, composed of State and Federal governments, as well as beekeeping and pollination industry representatives, has unanimously agreed on the next phase for biosecurity management of the mite. Varroa destructor is an external parasitic mite that attacks European honey bees and the Asian honey bee (Apis cerana). The mite, thought to be one of the greatest threats to our honey and honey bee pollination plant industries,

attaches itself to the bee and feeds on them, weakening them and killing colonies. European honey bees infested with varroa are likely to die within three to four years if left untreated. The mite also transmits honey bee viruses. Following an initial detection of a Varroa mite incursion at the Port of Newcastle in June 2022, and further detections in the Hunter, Central Coast, Sydney, the Mid North Coast and further afield, attempts to eradicate the mite eventually turned to plans for managing the threat. On 19 September 2023, the National Management

4 PORT STEPHENS NEWS OF THE AREA

Group – the peak decisionmaking body for the national varroa mite emergency response – made the decision that eradication of Varroa mite was no longer achievable. The aim of the new ‘Transition to Management Plan’ is to increase resilience and minimise ongoing impacts of Varroa mite for the bee industry and pollination reliant industries. The Australian Government, state and territory governments and sixteen industries have committed to share up to $100 million of the costs of the response to date and transition to management activities.

The NSW Government says it is prepared for the transition and can start immediately to upskill industry, with training modules ready to be rolled out. The next step is organising industry events, workshops, and placing materials online. The recruitment process for new roles under the plan is currently underway and the NSW Government will immediately recruit Varroa Development Officers (VDOs) who work directly with beekeepers to increase their ability to manage Varroa. The VDOs will develop, train and maintain a network of volunteer beekeepers who will monitor hives for

the presence of Varroa and provide information on the spread of the mite. Additionally, the response will employ a Pollination Industry Coordinator (PIC) to assist the pollination dependent industries to better understand and manage their needs. “The plan will see Varroa Development Officers employed nationally to help drive on the ground support for beekeepers dealing with this pest for the first time, which will be welcomed by all I am sure,” Australian Honey Bee Industry Council CEO Danny Le Feuvre said. Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty said the NSW

Government will immediately roll out resources, information, support and training for beekeepers and pollination reliant agriculture sectors. “We will work closely with industry at this critical time and deliver programs that enhance the health and robustness of NSW’s beekeeping industry,” she said. “Australia is the last major honey producing country in the world to get Varroa mite, and we are using international experience and science in understanding how best to prepare beekeepers and the beekeeping and pollination reliant industries.” For the latest information head to www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/ varroa

Council and local businesses support education dreams By Marian SAMPSON FOR more than ten years, the Port Stephens Council Mayoral Scholarships program has been connecting some of the region's best and brightest students with some of our largest employers. Once again in 2024,

20 passionate students who are leaving school to further education have been awarded a $2,000 scholarship supported by local businesses. The scholarships not only provide cash to assist with items such as textbooks, computers and tuition fees, but a vital connection to potential future employers and mentors. Scholarship recipients will be engaging with

businesses like Tomago based program sponsor Ampcontrol, who create energy solutions of scale using innovative partnerships and advanced Australian manufacturing. “These scholarships wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of local businesses who sponsor this event,” said Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer. “Many of our sponsors have been involved with

the Mayoral Academic Scholarships program for many years, with some providing funding for two scholarships,” he added. Also sponsoring the program is BAE Systems, Australia’s largest defence company. BAE work on programs across land, sea, cyber and air domains, support the global F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program and the Hawk Lead-In Fighter Program, and are helping to train the future pilots of the Royal Australian Air Force. Another sponsor

involved in the aerospace field is Newcastle Airport. Also sponsoring the program is Tomago Aluminium, Australia’s largest aluminium smelter, which contributes $1.5 billion annually to the national economy, of which $800 million is spent locally. New sponsors Enrich HR are also being welcomed to the program. The building and construction industry is also well represented with Weathertex, MOJO Homes, Hunter Land, Hunter Readymixed Concrete and

McDonald Jones Homes. The program is also supported by leading community business groups and enterprises including Salamander Bay Recycling, Business Port Stephens and Destination Port Stephens. The Wests Group, Club Lemon Tree, Soldiers Point Bowling Club and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club are also sponsors. “I’d like to thank all our sponsors for supporting the future leaders of Port Stephens, and for helping them grow their professional networks – invaluable for both business and students,” Mayor Palmer said.

Talented students receive $40,000 boost from scholarships

PORT Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer joined representatives from seventeen local businesses last week to present a total of $40,000 to support a group of talented and inspiring students as part of the Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships. At a ceremony on Thursday 15 February, 20 deserving young people were awarded $2,000 to use towards their first year of tertiary education in support of their career aspirations. Mayor Palmer said the range of fields being studied by the applicants this year has been impressive, including education, nursing, medicine and science. “This is an opportunity to thank our future leaders for their persistence and hard work during a particularly stressful time completing their HSC,” Mayor Palmer said. "The scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic merit, achievements, and performance in an interview process. “To all of the scholarship winners, good luck stepping into your studies and achieving all your goals in 2024 and beyond,” he added. Last days to have say on Shoal Bay Place Plan

By Marian SAMPSON

RESIDENTS wishing to provide feedback on the draft Shoal Bay Place Plan have until Sunday 25 February to have their say. Shoal Bay is the latest of the Port Stephens townships to undergo a ‘Place Plan' process, following Council undertaking the activity in

Karuah, Medowie and the West Ward Hinterland in recent years. Shoal Bay has a population of 1815 people, made up of 457 families. The area is home to 126 active businesses, including a large retirement village. The median age is 59, and 24 percent of workers are in tourism, accommodation, and

food service industries. Council has hosted dropin sessions at the Shoal Bay foreshore in recent weeks, providing an opportunity for residents to discuss future projects and plans for the local area. "I would like to thank the community of Shoal Bay who turned up to our three community drop-in sessions,”

Port Stephens Deputy Mayor Leah Anderson told NOTA. The Place Plan identifies short, medium and longterm actions that Council and the community can work on together to create opportunities for the immediate area. “It also tackles the tougher conversations we have to have, such as infill

housing, and alternate access into Shoal Bay, so we need to plan well in advance,” the Deputy Mayor said. Cr Anderson said community involvement is “vital to build a quality Place Plan”. “What I like about Place Plans is they start with the community to build the plan. “As a councillor, and I share this frustration with Council, I find it difficult to get enough people interested or to make the time to put towards community planning and engagement sessions. “I am keen to hear feedback on how we can get more people involved from the start of these processes, not just as we near the end.” The Shoal Bay Place Plan process has been underway since September 2020, when a Port Stephens ‘Liveability’ survey was launched. For Shoal Bay residents, the condition of public open space and the natural environment were considered the most important elements of an ‘ideal’ neighbourhood. Since that time, several community workshops and additional meetings have been held with the Port

Stephens Business Chamber to ensure the needs of the business community are also being considered. There have also been dedicated workshops around parking and movement in Shoal Bay. Port Stephens Council used a range of communication methods to engage the community on the Shoal Bay Place plan, including via newsletter, bulk letterbox drop, direct emails, Council's website, and the Port Stephens Council Facebook page. Collating information gained from workshops, online surveys and feedback, Council has prepared a draft Shoal Bay Place Plan, which is out for public exhibition until 25 February. “I must highlight this is a draft concept plan at this stage, and this is why Council and myself have been out talking to residents and ratepayers to get feedback about this draft plan,” Cr Anderson said. Free counselling for young people in Port Stephens By Marian SAMPSON

WITH students now back into the swing of the school year, Port Stephens youth counselling service jupiter is reminding parents to check in with their children. They are also reminding families that help is at hand if a local child or young person is experiencing a mental health issue.

The team can help navigate the unique emotional and psychological hurdles faced by young people, offering counselling services dedicated to providing the support needed for growth and resilience for those aged between twelve and 25. “It is jupiter’s mission to offer free, inclusive, and confidential counselling across three accessible locations in Port Stephens –

Salamander, Raymond Terrace and Tanilba Bay,” jupiter’s Avril Saunders told News Of The Area. “Our counselling services offered are accessible to everyone, and are entirely free,” she said. The professional counsellors are seasoned and empathetic, creating a secure and non-judgmental environment, allowing you to freely express your concerns and emotions.

Whether facing stress, anxiety, depression, family issues or other emotional challenges, jupiter’s counsellors are there to listen, support and guide those they help towards healing and personal growth. In 2016 Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) initiated research by the Centre of Rural and Remote Mental Health at Newcastle

University to build a clearer understanding of the mental health needs and experience of young people in Port Stephens. The study found that Port Stephens had the highest rates of mental and behavioural problems in NSW. Booking an appointment is simple: just call 0490 716 265 or visit jupiter.org.au

THE dedicated volunteers of the Tomaree Community Hospital Auxiliary (TCHA) are celebrating a bumper year of fundraising in 2023, with more than $75,000 generated to support the local hospital. The funds raised enabled the TCHA to purchase a range of equipment to support hospital patients and staff. “Community groups such as the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group, Nelson Bay Lions Club, Nelson Bay Rotary, Nelson Bay CWA Evening Group, Woolworths Salamander Bay and Nelson Bay, Brickfest, Fingal Bay Tennis Club and Bunnings have donated significant amounts of money for us to be able to add to our funds raised through craft items, market stalls, raffles, Return and Earn etc,” said Julia Harrison, TCHA. “With these funds we are able to purchase, after consultation with the medical teams at the hospital, items such as a specialised paediatric intensive care cot, palliative care patient chairs, CuroCell mattresses, bed monitors and

WITH a focus on inclusion, Irrawang High School recently held their annual ‘whole of school’ swimming carnival. During the competitive section of the carnival, students contested 100 and 200 metre events. “Successful students will be selected for zone trials later this term,” Lue Fagan, Community Liaison Officer at Irrawang High School told News Of The Area. “Some students also gained a Personal Best in these events.” Beyond the competitive races, Irrawang High always focuses on delivering a fun carnival that all students can enjoy and participate in. After the serious competition ended, the school’s students seriously splashed out. “The whole school carnival was a great success with swimming races and novelty events,” Lue said. “There was something for everyone.” Happiness and laughter flowed as students enjoyed a range of events, with inflatable races a big hit. The school is divided into four sports houses with Bramley coming first, Moy second, Osbourne third and Dawson fourth.

Stinker’s History: Harry Larcombe Part Two By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE

THE following is Part Two of a three part series on one of Broughton Island's true characters – Harry Larcombe. The final instalment will be printed next week. Part Two - Harry’s Teeth OVER the years Harry Larcombe became the unofficial ‘Mayor’ of the Island and an increasing number of visitors continued to bring Harry gifts of food, bread, beer, fresh clothes and fishing gear. On one occasion Harry was presented with a great big, juicy rump steak. Harry's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. A steak! How fantastic it would be to chew on a beautiful steak cooked on the BBQ. He could just smell it. There was only one problem - Harry did not have any teeth, he was gummy as a frog and had only chomped on

soft food, boiled vegetables, fish, soups and an occasional lobster for many years. How he would love a steak. It was the Ward boys, regular island fishermen and mates of Harry, who took it upon themselves to confront the issue. One of the boys, Lyle Ward, had the solution and on his next visit to the island carried a box up to Harry’s hut. The box contained 60 sets of false teeth! Lyle had a friend who worked in the city morgue where a large box of false teeth had been gathered as they were of no further use to their previous owners. The sets of teeth were taken out onto the island and presented to Harry, who enthusiastically commenced trying them on for size. After trying 40 or so sets, a dejected Harry, whose gums were starting to blister, had all but lost hope when to his sheer delight a pair fitted perfectly, as

if they had been made for him. The teeth were to open a whole new world of munching and chewing. The grateful recipient insisted that he sterilise his new dentures. This seemed to Lyle to be rather strange considering that he had just placed more than half a box full in his mouth. Harry quickly boiled water in a saucepan and dropped his new teeth in. Three minutes later, to his absolute horror, he placed the dentures on the table, only to see every tooth fall out of the pink plastic gums. A feverish effort was made to glue the teeth back into the corresponding hole - to no avail. Back to the mush. It was said that one night in the 1975 big blow, when the sea was enormous and threatening to wash every hut into Esmeralda Cove, Harry was playing darts by the light of a hurricane lamp in ‘Mouldy’

q As legend would have it, Harry was playing darts or chess when the shack was washed into Esmeralda Cove. Tarrant’s shack. Just as he was preparing to throw his final dart, the door burst open and a huge wave washed through the hut. The massive body of water lifted the flimsy construction and washed it and its

occupants into the cove. Another version of the same night tells us that Harry was playing his dog in chess and the score was one game all when the big wave arrived. Some say that Harry was about to checkmate the dog,

Stinker’s Fishin’: Snapper going crackers By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE

LAST week I wrote that it was the youngest member of the family that generally catches the biggest fish. In the case of the Grech family, that is not the case. Father Ray has recently returned from a trip to Broughton Island with a monster 83 centimetre snapper that outweighs those caught by son Matt. For those who choose to target the white water or the shallow reefs, snapper are predictable in that they go crackers in a two to three metre sea. If the sea is thumping the snapper will bite like Hexham Greys. When the sea settles, the snapper go off the bite. One day the snapper will bite while the next day, in the

but another story suggests that the dog was about to checkmate Harry. Of course there is a possibility that this may simply be another Broughton Island fairy tale.

q Ray Grech with his monster Broughton Island snapper.

q Matt Grech with a couple of thumper snapper same spot, you will not get a bite. I have just returned from a couple of days on Broughton where the snapper fishing

was fantastic. Any bait sent down was taken by reddies from one to seven kilograms. The only problems I had were kingfish

and sharks which prevented most baits from reaching the bottom. Among the hoards of rat kingies were a few giants that were unstoppable when hooked. Never have I experienced so many sharks; mainly schoolies with the odd whaler. Using 20 pound (lb) mono line, it is all over bar the shouting when a two metre shark gobbles your bait.

The weather was ideal and fishing conditions were perfect. A great trip. For as long as I can recall the theft of crabs and crab traps has been a major problem. Those who do not have the ability to catch their own crabs choose to steal crabs from those who can. Working under the cover of darkness the thieves lift

traps and shake out the crabs, which in some cases are sold on the black market. A similar problem exists in the lobster industry. Commercial crabbers who earn a living trapping crabs are particularly affected. I did notice an excellent warning sign at Smiths Lake that would be appreciated at Taylors Beach, Soldiers Point, Lemon Tree and Karuah.

DEAR News Of The Area,

IT MAY have been a coincidence that Port Stephens Council held a consultation meeting on the future of Shoal Bay. The State Government earlier released a report that emphasised the loss of some 30000 30-40 year olds from the inner Sydney suburbs they called the ‘suburbs without grandchildren’. The Bay meeting was well attended, with

most speakers concerned about future increase in density and population. The way the population in the Bay area is developing, with over 75-year-olds being the fastest growing group, there is a lack of social and affordable homes for workers to care for the aged and those working in hospitality. It is great for vendors that agents can boost record sale prices, but unless the Council can find some way to get affordable homes in the area, those new residents will

Dear Carmel, Out of all the different gym personalities, the equipment hog is one of the most annoying, but there are many others. State honours for top Fingal Bay paddler By Chris KARAS AN intensive training program has reaped plenty of dividends for Fingal Bay paddler Sandra Lyons. Regular sessions on the rowing machine and on the water with her Port Stephens Dragon Boat Club colleagues has earned the steely warrior selection in the NSW Senior C squad for this year’s Australian Dragon Boat Championships to be held in Perth from April 17-21. 62-year-old Sandra will make her State

She is one of 48 paddlers named in the NSW 60yrs plus squad and will travel to Sydney on a fortnightly basis for training in the lead up to the national titles. Qualifying composed of two kilometre times on an ERG (rower) and an extensive inperson trial consisting of fitness and in-boat exercises. Diamonds star Paige Hadley connects with juniors By Chris KARAS

NELSON Bay’s aspiring young netballers honed their skills at the Susan Pettitt Netball Clinic last weekend at the Tomaree Sports Complex courts. World Cup-winning Diamonds centre Paige Hadley teamed up with former Australian goal attack Pettitt to educate the local juniors on the game’s finer points. The Sydney Swifts legends had plenty to offer, with Hadley drilling the youngsters on defensive and attacking techniques and Pettitt co-ordinating the shooting segment of the clinic. Despite the sweltering heat, the promising participants lapped up the experience as they completed their drills with vigour and enthusiasm. Nelson Bay Netball Association president Rebecca Keating told News Of The Area that Hadley and Pettitt are “great role models for the juniors” and presented an informative clinic. “Paige and Susan offer so much international experience and resonated with our girls during the specialist sessions,”

Major Singles final played out at Soldiers Point By Peter SMITH

A MUCH anticipated Major Singles final was played at Soldiers Point Bowling Club last week, with Daniel Clarke and the newly signed Bill Kachel competing for honours. They had beaten Bill Ahoy and Leigh Penman in the semi finals

earlier that day, in an event which attracted some 50 entrants. Playing brilliant draw bowls, Daniel went to a 20 shots to six lead after only one hour's play. However, Bill, playing a combination of spectacular drives and effective draw bowls, cut down the lead to six shots to be within

sight of levelling the scores. But Daniel had other ideas and played some excellent draw bowls to run out Club Champion 25 shots to 16. "Congratulations to Daniel and Bill for a high quality Final played in a sporting manner much appreciated by the large crowd of spectators,” Bowls Director Mark Watt said.

Players across the age ranges have been put through their paces on the paddock and in the gym, with internal and external programs offered locally by the club. Head of Coaching Steve Punshon told News Of The Area that preparation is a key factor to any club’s success. “It’s important our players are prepared for the season ahead and are in good physical shape, as well as building social networks and enjoying their sport locally,” the former English FA Coach Developer and mentor revealed. “Through these programs we are offering players an opportunity to develop on and off the pitch,” quipped the astute Punshon. Power AFL men poised to create history By Chris KARAS

A TWELVE month sabbatical has given Medowie’s Reegan Connors a new lease of life in his AFL journey. The durable ruck rover hopes to create history this season when he runs out with his Port Stephens Power team mates in the Hunter Central Coast AFL Black Diamond Plate Men’s competition. Excitement is building at the established Power organisation as they prepare to field a side in the Men's division for the first time, with the rejuvenated Connors one of several talented recruits set to pull on a teal, black and white jumper. Twenty-year-old Connors and promising eighteen-year-old Port Stephens junior Jacob Radcliffe are two young guns tipped to shine and lead the Power during the 2024 campaign. Both have the determination, character and skill to inspire teammates and put their stamp on

matches and should prove valuable assets in the senior ranks. Port Stephens AFL Coaching Co-ordinator Aaron Marsh told News Of The Area that there was “a positive buzz around the club”, with up to 20 senior men's players taking part in pre-season training. “We are still chasing players for our men's squad and would like to hear from any interested athletes that are keen to give AFL a crack,” the Power Juniors mentor revealed. “At present the squad consists of a mix of youth and experience plus senior players making a comeback to the code and converts from other sports,” quipped Marsh, who has captained the Australian Defence Force’s basketball team. Connors has linked with the Power after nine seasons with the Lake Macquarie Dockers and Warners Bay Bulldogs, where he represented Hunter as an emerging fifteen-year-old forward in 2018. He also spent a season with the Wallsend - West Newcastle Swans

strength and conditioning training with Australian international representative bodybuilderJoy Flint, sprint and endurance training, plus a series of group development and individual skills sessions. With an anticipated membership base of over 600 registered players, fielding in excess of 50 teams across junior and senior football during 2024, the club recognises the importance of investing in the development of their coaches to help players achieve their potential. This was recently highlighted with coaches Aaron Hovardas and Amber Grosser being in the first cohorts in NSW to complete Football Australia's revamped Foundation in Football and C Licence Diploma. These initiatives are supported by an extended new look committee for 2024, with focus on developing talent and offering a pathway to senior football across the Nelson Bay community. members will need to be there in time for a 7.30am tee time. Come along and enjoy a relaxing 9 hole competition, all members and visitors are very welcome and invited to join or renew annual subscriptions during February to be financial during our competition year. HOUSE OF GODS

ABC, 8.30pm

SATURDAY

EVOLVING VEGAN

SBS FOOD, 6.30pm

The doe-eyed star of the latest live-action Aladdin movie, Egyptian Canadian actor Mena Massoud is also a foodie on a mission: to show the world how magical vegan cuisine can be. Following his cookbook of the same name, the Canadian explores restaurants around North America, devouring yummy things such as butter, pizza, and fried chicken sandwiches. It’s not a traditional cooking show – some viewers might race out to buy his cookbook to piece together a complete meal, while others will simply appreciate the artistry and creativity behind delicious vegan dishes including pastrami sandwiches and Vietnamese-style catfish. The plant-based fun kicks off tonight in Los Angeles.

It’s a sophisticated thriller about family and power that could be set anywhere in the world. Premiering tonight, this gripping six-part story takes place in western Sydney and comes from Ali’s Wedding writer and creator Osamah Sami. It’s personal for Sami, based on his teen years growing up as the son of the head cleric at a Melbourne mosque. Starring Kamel El Basha (Room 207) and Safia Arain (Bump), it’s an immersive view into an Iraqi Australian community and culture, which is rarely represented on screen. We follow a charismatic sheik who is elected as head of The Messenger mosque amid a flurry of controversy involving an innocent selfie and behindthe-scenes payments. Gripping and original.

THIS IS GOING TO HURT

ABC, 9.05pm

Based on Adam Kay’s comical and dark bestselling memoir about his time barely surviving as a fatigued junior doctor in obstetrics, this medical drama stands heads and shoulders above the pack. It’s an unflinching and funny dive into the frailties of medicine that grabs you and won’t let go. Ben Whishaw (No Time To Die) plumbs the highs and lows of his unforgiving role with a magnetic presence and brutal honesty. Tonight, Adam’s mental health is sinking, with Erika’s (Hannah Onslow) complaint and guilt bearing down on him. If you haven’t already binged this excellent and sometimes grimly realistic British offering, it’s a prescription to laugh and cry in equal measure. 2302

In the Under 17s, Ashlyn Wall put in a personal best performance to win gold in the 1500m, also taking out the win in the 800m. Another personal best time claimed Ashlyn silver in the 400m. Again in the Under 17s, Dixie Conlon claimed Gold in the triple jump, and Silver in the long jump and 100m hurdles.
