By Tara CAMPBELL THE feasibility of a shade sail at Robinson Reserve in Anna Bay has been discussed in a recent Port Stephens Council meeting.

After an initial notice of motion in August, the Council resolved that a report would be made in regards to the lack of a shade sail in the park with specific reference to the benefit that this would bring to the local community, as well as the costs associated with the project.

The report has now been provided to the Council noting the feasibility of the shade sail.

Port Stephens Council commits to Carbon Neutrality by 2025 FROM Page 1 commit to the goal of achieving carbon neutrality for Council operations by 2025, determine a suitable funding source to support Council in achieving this goal and provide a report to Council on a roadmap to achieving carbon neutrality.

“We've had campaigns before us before but this is about, in my mind, doing what is the right thing.

“This report to Port Stephens Council is so we can do our bit and hopefully stabilise the effects of what is happening across the globe,” Mayor Palmer said.

Carbon Neutrality looks at

offsetting emissions made by a company or organisation to provide a sustainable future.

With Council elections coming up, climate action is on the minds of many voters, eager to hear what each mayoral candidate has to say.

Labor mayoral candidate Leah Anderson told News Of The Area that she is eager to make a difference regarding climate change.

“The State and Federal Government have both already committed to varying emissions reduction targets for their operations, as well as countries around the world.

“I know that locals understand the very real

impacts of climate change and our coastal communities would most keenly understand the threat it poses.

“This motion is an important first step towards Port Stephens Council playing its part in addressing the emissions it produces and working to reduce the carbon it outputs.

“If I’m elected I will be reviewing this 2025 target to see if it can be achieved sooner, and with all actions to achieve the goal supporting local jobs in Port Stephens,” Ms Anderson said.

Current Mayor Ryan Palmer spoke of his efforts to reach carbon neutrality by 2025.

“We aren’t immune to the

impacts of climate change including increased sea level rise, intensity and frequency of storms, plus bushfire and rainfall patterns that are challenging the way we manage our environment.

“To achieve this balance, we will ensure any emissions released into the atmosphere from our operations will be balanced by the equivalent amount of emissions being removed.

“We’ll work closely with the community, business and all levels of government to influence behaviour change and reduce energy demand to protect and enhance our natural environment,” he said.

Financial Assistance Granted

By Tara CAMPBELL FINANCIAL assistance has been granted to a number of community projects and groups.

In the recent Port Stephens Council meeting on 12 October 2021, Mayor Ryan Palmer proudly supported providing financial assistance to the Clontarf Foundation, Rotary Club of Nelson Bay and Salamander Bay and Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club.

“I'm very proud to be able to put forward funds like this and although I'm down to the last few dollars, I'm happy that I have been able to provide Mayoral funds and also funds that come from the airport to the community.

“We've got so many people across our great community doing great things,” Mayor Palmer said.

“We’re able to put forward a scholarship through the Clontarf Foundation that encourages young Aboriginal men to go through high school and pursue further experience, whether that be into an apprenticeship or into tertiary education.

“It’s very exciting and I know these boys are some of the best boys or young men that I've ever met,” Mr Palmer said.

Funding of $1675 was donated to the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay towards a bench seat and plaque at Tom O’Dwyer Oval, with Mr Palmer speaking fondly of the local Rotary Club’s project of planting approximately 100 trees to help support koala habitat in the area.

The final funding allocation was to Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club - a $497.50 donation towards restocking of first aid supplies for the coming season.

Councillor Ken Jordan addressed the meeting, stating that the people of Port Stephens should be very grateful that the mayor allocates a potential income of $50,000 from the airport towards the community.

“The reason we have funding for these items tonight is because of our very, very generous mayor,” Cr Jordan said.

Fighting Fires With Tech

AFTER the black summer bushfires we all know that something has to change.

Our attitude to climate change being one of these.

Technology is now being deployed in new ways to help our firefighters and to put safety first.

New technology is being deployed across NSW to bolster firefighting efforts and safety, including ground-breaking drones providing firefighters

with specialised images and data from incidents in ‘real time’.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott joined Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter at the Emergency Services Academy in Orchard Hills last week to inspect the newest technology designed to enhance firefighter situational awareness, and improve incident planning and preparation.

The tech package will see a $57.4 million investment by the NSW Government, as part of its overall $480 million

response to the Independent Bushfire Inquiry following the Black Summer Bushfires of 2019/20.

The ‘connected firefighter’ package includes Drones or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) which provide images and data from incidents in realtime, to assist firefighters with incident planning.

These drones can now also assist HAZMAT crews with chemical and gas detection.

Also being deployed on the ground will be Cell On Wheels (CoWs) are mobile

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the program will bring more original live Australian music to communities across the country – from pubs in the remote outback, to clubs in major capital cities.

“This funding will help the live music sector to re-emerge

as Australians continue to get vaccinated and COVID-19 restrictions ease, allowing venues to begin to reopen and rebuild,” Minister Fletcher said.

“It is important that our live music sector will be primed to host performances and gigs when permitted to do so, and by supporting these local venues now, we are increasing opportunities to see Australian artists get back on stage.”

This funding brings the Government’s investment to more than $8 million since the start of the program, supporting more than 300 live music venues and the recovery and sustainability of the live music sector.

“Resources such as RPAS, two-way pagers, upgrades to our Mobile Command Centre and Cells on Wheels, provide smarter interoperability for not only our firefighters on the ground, but also our communications personnel behind the scenes,” he said.

Emergency Services Update

IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update.

Port Stephens Marine Rescue At 1:50pm Thursday afternoon Port Stephens Marine Rescue received a MAYDAY request for assistance for an overturned sail dinghy approximately four-five meters off Bagnalls Beach where two teenagers on board were struggling in the water.

MRO Howard took the call to urgently arrange help for the struggling people in the water.

An all-ships notice was announced on the emergency marine channels for nearby vessels with Watch Officer Harry supervising.

Skipper Laurie and Sue were the first to arrive down at the dock.

In no time Laurie had PS30

on the water and heading towards Bagnalls Beach.

PS30 arrived on location to find the two persons were okay and had safely made it to shore.

Parents were contacted and arranged to pick up the two persons on board.

Puppy Scammers Puppy scams remain at alarming highs, with NSW Fair Trading on track to equal the number of complaints received in 2020 relating to the canine cons that shot to prevalence during COVID-19.

The Medowie Football Club, formally known as the Soccer Club, is one of the biggest and strongest clubs in Port Stephens, enjoying constant growth even through the pandemic.

The club now has approximately 520 playing members.

“Yulong Oval has been progressively improved by Port Stephens Council over the years and now it has three full size fields available; there's parking, amenities and at any given match day, this site can have over two and a half thousand players, supporters, mums and dads, as

well as a wonderful volunteers of the Football Club, especially the hardworking inspiring committee members,” Cr Doohan said.

Cr Doohan addressed the Council chambers asking for support to rename the fields to honour some of the founding members and supporters of the club.

Field one will be renamed to Grahame Beasley Field.

“Grahame was the first ever at Medowie Football Club.

“He held the position of president from 1979 and sat in the chair for nine years and in that time he was instrumental in building the existing clubhouse, the changerooms and canteen in the mid 1990s.

“He also helped form the first women's team of which he was then the coach of.

“Graham is still going along to Yulong Oval and has done so for many years to watch his grandson play,” Cr Doohan said.

Field two will be renamed the Alan and Gail Morris field.

“Alan and Gail Morris held many positions in the Daily Football Club Committee over the years.

“They first became involved with the club from the early 1980s with Alan not only coaching his own children's teams, but he also found the time to coach the all ages men and women's teams.

“When they couldn't get a coach, Alan always stepped in,” Cr Doohan said.

The final field, field three, will be renamed the Bev Turnbull Field.

“Bev was always going to play a huge part in Medowie Football Club because that was the type of person she was. “She had a huge heart and would do anything for anyone and her biggest contribution to the Club was her role as canteen supervisor.

“That might be miniscule for some, but it was huge for a struggling club back in the day.

“She always made sure the canteen was well stocked to keep players and attendees fed,” Cr Doohan said.

The motion was supported with the fields now honouring some of the most important members of the Football Club’s history.

NSW Crimestoppers: 'Just Hang Up' ALMOST 90% of Australians have received at least one nuisance or unwanted call every week and a further 10% receiving more than ten nuisance or unwanted calls each week, according to a recent consumer survey undertaken by Crime Stoppers (NSW).

Scam activity has a significant social and economic impact on Australians.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch, reports phone calls continue to be the most common way scammers reach consumers with financial losses of $66.8 million reported to Scamwatch between 1 January to 3 October 2021 from 120,279 reports.

This represents a 104% increase in losses and an 87% increase in reports.

Scammers are finding new ways to trick people into taking their calls.

For example, Caller ID spoofing is one such tactic which allows the scammer to disguise their identity. If the scammer is calling from outside Australia, they can actually display an Australian phone number, including a mobile number, which increases the likelihood of you answering their call.

The impact on people’s productivity is enormous.

It’s a nuisance and extremely disruptive.

Some people are even receiving calls from their own phone number, while other people’s valid phone numbers are being reported as a phone scam because it has been used by criminals.

If your phone number has been stolen and used in a phone scam, contact your telco provider immediately.

There is no one single solution to avoid scams and blocking individual phone numbers is one solution but it only stops calls from that specific number.

NSW Crime Stoppers has launched a new campaign to help the community minimise the risk of falling victim to phone scams.

CEO, NSW Crime Stoppers, Mr Peter Price AM said, “A legitimate institution will not ask probing or personal questions on an unsolicited call.

“The questions may seem harmless, but

they build a picture of you, where your finances are, your financial situation and other personal details that allow them to impersonate you and extract money.

“Hanging up may be the difference between being scammed or not,” added Mr Price.

Crime Stoppers’ message to the community is simple: Just Hang Up. Reputable organisations like financial institutions and the ATO will never ask you for passwords or for access to your computer.

What to do: If there is a distinct delay when you pick up the phone and the person does not announce who they are before starting the conversation, just hang up.

If someone asks for your personal information, just hang up.

The survey found that of those who receive unwanted or nuisance calls, more than 68% have been asked for credit card or payment details or asked for access to their computer.

More than half the people surveyed engaged with the nuisance call before eventually hanging up and in 5% of the cases, people have given out their personal information, credit card or payment details or access to their computer.

The best advice Crime Stoppers can give to consumers is just hang up, then check if the call is legitimate by calling the organisation they claim to be from using contact details you’ve sourced independently, like a Google search.

Never use the contact details associated with the call.

Changed traffic conditions on Hinton Bridge

MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions on Hinton Road at Hinton to carry out the last stage of work on Hinton Bridge over the Paterson River.

Work includes removing scaffolding, installing handrails and minor completion work, and will be carried out from 7am to 5pm on weekdays.

The project is expected to be completed

by Thursday 28 October, weather permitting.

Single lane closures with alternate flow and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours.

Intermittent closures of up to 15 minutes duration will be in pace during work hours, which may impact travel time.

Temporary traffic signals and traffic barriers will be in place while works are carried out. The signals will operate outside of work hours with traffic control in place during work hours.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.

Council Land, Private Gain

ALL along the foreshore of Port Stephens there are a range of public reserves and parks, allowing public access for all.

Yet some residents have taken it upon themselves to construct private structures on these reserves.

Some of these installations create trip hazards, others are visual eyesores and many hamper access to these public spaces.

Some permanently install furniture and lighting.

Port Stephens Councillor John Nell told News Of The Area, “Sea walls require approval from land owners (Lands Department) and Council and vertical sea wall maximise the wave impact and are totally ineffective.

“Council pulled out the remains of a vertical sea wall, just north of Kangaroo Point some years ago.

“The only thing that works is a rock wall at

roughly 45 degree angle,” “However, it should be noted that there are a few properties on the southern shores of Port Stephens that have their boundaries out in the water.

“I think that the same thing applies to all properties at North Arm Cove.

“Regardless of ownership, Council approval is still required,” he said.

A Council spokesperson said, “Any coastal protection works that are located on Council land would require landowner’s consent and development consent in order to be lawfully constructed.

“This process only applies to new structures and does not authorise existing or illegal structures.

“Where structures have been constructed without approval, we have a range of compliance actions available to resolve the matter.

“We are generally not supportive of coastal protection works on Council land until a comprehensive Coastal Management Program has been developed and endorsed.

“We are currently collaborating with the NSW Government to develop this program.

“Our Council has recently taken action against contractors and landowners constructing unauthorised coastal protection works.

“This has resulted in rectification works and fines issued to the parties involved.

“Each instance is dealt with based on the circumstances and location of the encroachment onto public land.”

One entity using public land for business use is Bannisters, which has left Cherylle Stone of Soldiers Point outraged.

Cherylle told News Of The Area, “While some smaller businesses struggle to pay to use public land; it appears that the use of the public land between Bannisters and the foreshore is an arrangement where there is financial gain for Bannisters through what appears to be Council allowing use without formality or payment.

“Bannisters uses the public land for guest amenity, recreation and events such as high value weddings conducted in the Rotunda which sits on the public reserve.

“Meanwhile individuals wishing to conduct weddings in Council parks require a permit and pay a fee to Council for the land use,” she said.

Not-for-profit organisations pay for land use of Council parks and reserves for a raft of activities including education, and social and cultural activities which provide positive lifestyle experiences for residents and visitors to the region.

In relation to the rotunda and flood lights adjacent to Bannisters, a Council representative stated, “We are currently investigating the use of the land within

Service NSW For Business

“This partnership is an integral part of keeping businesses connected with Government services and

assistance making business growth easier in Port Stephens,” Ms Gardner said.

This renewal comes at no cost to business owners, and provides free, personalised support to small business owners to help owners understand industry regulations whilst guiding them through transactions and offering support.

PORT Stephens Council will continue its partnership with Service NSW to deliver business support services in the area.

In 2018 an agreement was entered with Service NSW to promote and provide access to NSW

Government information and services to better assist business owners and support the local economy.

Originally this service was entitled ‘Easy to do Business’ but has since changed to ‘Service NSW for Business’.

Gardner said that the program has been aimed at reducing red tape for businesses in the area.

“The program has helped cafes, small bars and restaurants in Port Stephens to open and grow by streamlining the processes and by providing a single point of contact as well as tailored

assistance,” Ms Gardner said.

By renewing this agreement, businesses owners can receive support including; Business Concierges offering overthe-phone service, email and face-to-face support and case management, an online Business Profile to make it faster and easier for businesses to transact with the NSW Government,

WITH 80 percent of NSW’s eligible population now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, new Reopening NSW Roadmap’s 80 per cent settings came into effect on Monday for those who are fully vaccinated.

Community sport can resume, more friends and family will be reunited, and there will no longer be a cap on guests at weddings and funerals.

Masks will also no longer be required in offices, and drinking while standing and dancing will be permitted indoors and outdoors at hospitality venues.

From 1 November bookings for hospitality venues will no longer be capped.

Also from 1 November, the NSW Government will remove quarantine requirements and caps for overseas arrivals who the Commonwealth Government recognises as fully vaccinated with a TGAapproved vaccine, helping

Australians stranded abroad get home before the end of the year.

Further advice about testing requirements for arrivals will be provided in the coming days.

Fully vaccinated travellers already in quarantine will also complete their quarantine requirements on November 1, even if it is less than 14-days.

Overseas arrivals who are not fully vaccinated will be capped at 210 people per week, and will be required to undergo mandatory 14-days hotel quarantine.

Travel between Greater Sydney (including the Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Central Coast) and Regional NSW will also be permitted from 1 November, to allow people in the regions more time to receive their second vaccine.

To support regional businesses likely to be impacted by this change the NSW Government will defer the second taper of

the JobSaver program until October 31.

Eligible regional businesses will receive 30 percent of weekly payroll, before tapering payments to the scheduled 15 percent from November 1.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the easing of restrictions and return of overseas travellers would help reunite families and be a significant boost for the economy.

“We have reached this vaccination milestone quicker than anyone thought we could, and that is a testament to the hard work of people across the State turning out to get vaccinated,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Welcoming back fully vaccinated travellers will not only mean families and friends can be home in time for Christmas, it will also give our economy a major boost.”

Deputy Premier Paul Toole said the tough decision had been made to delay travel between Regional NSW and Greater Sydney, with the NSW

Government extending the JobSaver program for regional businesses. By 1 November, it’s expected more than 77 percent of regional LGAs will be fully vaccinated.

“Everyone has done a brilliant job of getting vaccinated and rates are rising fast; however we have looked at the health modelling and listened to feedback from regional communities who want more time to get their double dose vaccination rates up as high as possible before they welcome back visitors,” Mr Toole said.

“We know businesses in regional NSW were getting ready to welcome people back, but it’s important we get this right so that we can have greater confidence the vaccines will do their job – and that when we re-open travel to the regions, they can remain open and that businesses have continued support in the meantime. We thank people for their patience.”

Minister for Jobs,

Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres welcomed the 80 per cent reopening and recognised it as an important step on the road to recovery.

“We are opening up locally and we are opening up to the world.

“Now is a time for people to come together in a safe way whether it be returning home from overseas or enjoying your favourite local venue,” Mr Ayres said.

All premises continue to operate at one person per 4sqm indoors and one person per 2sqm outdoors.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the NSW community had done an extraordinary job to reach the 80 percent double dose vaccination target and was leading Australia out of the pandemic.

“The people of NSW have pulled together to achieve this fantastic outcome and bring us closer to life as we knew it before the pandemic,

but we’re not there yet,” Mr Hazzard said.

“We can’t forget that COVID is still circulating amongst us in NSW and we need to keep getting vaccinated to push the double dose rates even higher.

“We want to get as close to 100 per cent double vaccination as possible to keep everyone safe.”

NSW residents will still need to comply with COVIDSafe check-ins and provide proof of vaccination to staff in most settings.

More restrictions will be relaxed on 1 December, as previously announced in the Reopening NSW Roadmap.

“Working with teens and children with lived experience provides the opportunity to build a contemporary unit that best meets their needs.”

“The design includes a dedicated courtyard, carer accommodation, family zones, recreation areas and rooms that maximise access to natural light,” Mr Di Rienzo said.

“The proposed layout provides an environment that balances the needs for privacy, activity and creativity.

“It’s wonderful to see young people guiding the future of this service,” Mr Di Rienzo said.

“It focuses on a patientcentred model of care with spaces to support family involvement in the delivery of

care for their loved one.”

The Nexus Unit accommodates young people up to 18 years of age, as well as providing support to their families and carers.

It also provides telehealth mental health services to rural and remote areas.

Mr Di Rienzo said that

while the Nexus Unit is one of nine state-wide acute Child and Adolescent and Mental Health Services, it primarily supports young people from the Hunter and New England regions.

The new Nexus Unit will be located in an area of the existing John Hunter Hospital

and was identified as part of the Master Plan for the $835 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct.

Work on the redesigned Nexus Unit is forecast to commence in 2025 following commissioning of the Acute Services Building, which is being delivered as part of the

precinct.

The Nexus redevelopment is part of the $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program to support the delivery of mental health care reform in NSW – the single biggest investment in mental health infrastructure to date.

COVID-19 has increased levels of anxiety and mental health issues faced by our youth.

For those living in Port Stephens there is a free service with counsellors through jupiter, however those needing more specialised services still access these through John Hunter Hospital.

Designs for the Nexus Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit at John Hunter Hospital were unveiled last week.

Michael Di Rienzo, Chief Executive Hunter New England Local Health District said the 12-bed redevelopment has been codesigned with young people with lived experience in adolescent mental health, their families, clinicians and staff.

A REPORT has been made to Port Stephens Council detailing and identifying options for a new indoor sports facility in Raymond Terrace.

Since the initial Notice of Motion was raised in February

2020, Council staff have worked to develop the strategic framework necessary to plan and construct an indoor sports facility in Raymond Terrace, delivering the Kings Hill Urban Release Infrastructure Study, the King Park Sports Complex Masterplan and the updated

FOR many of us the past week has been a constant series of scanning a businesses’ QR code, signing into a venue with the Services NSW App, before switching onto the Medicare App to show our vaccination status.

Now we can do this all in one step.

Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said with restrictions to further ease as the state approaches 80 percent double vaccination, the integration of the vaccine certificate with the app will make things easier for the people of NSW. “This is an extra digital service to make life easier for the businesses and customers of NSW as we open back up.

NSW is the first jurisdiction in Australia to roll out an integrated QR code solution for displaying vaccination status State wide,” Mr Dominello said.

“When someone visits a venue, they’ll be able to show their green check-in tick and vaccination status simultaneously, saving staff and customers time.

“While integrating the COVID-19 digital certificate onto the Service NSW app will be optional, it will be by far the easiest and quickest way to prove you’re fully vaccinated.”

The State-wide roll out follows a successful regional pilot with clubs, aged-care

facilities and taxis in Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and Lismore, as well as internal government participants.

As the vaccine data sits in the Federal Australian Immunisation Register to integrate the COVID-19 digital certificate into the Service NSW app you will need to: ensure your Federal MyGov account is linked to Medicare; download the Express Plus Medicare app and sign in with your MyGov account details; select ‘Proof of vaccinations’ and then ‘View history’; the elect ‘Share with check in app’ and then ‘Service NSW’.

The whole process takes just a couple of minutes and will certainly simplify things as it will mean one less complication on check in.

“I also want to thank the businesses and individuals who participated in the various industry-based trials this week in Port Macquarie, Lismore, Tamworth and Wagga and Wagga.

“Your feedback has been invaluable in getting us to this point ahead of schedule.

“Integrating the vaccine certificate also helps future proof our State’s digital infrastructure in the event that proof of vaccination is ever required again or if it’s

still needed in certain settings like international travel.”

There were already three ways to demonstrate the vaccine certificate.

Customers can use the Express Plus Medicare app or the digital wallet on their phone.

Customers without a smartphone can print a vaccination certificate from their Medicare account or contact Services Australia for a paper certificate in order to prove their vaccination status.

John Green, Director of Liquor and Policing at the Australian Hotels Association NSW, said venue operators were reporting the vaccination status combined with the QR check-in made it easier to check and validate.

“Businesses are trying hard to meet the rules and if we can help them by eliminating a step it is a good thing!

“The convenience of having a customer’s vaccination status presented alongside their check-in will allow for a seamless entry and take pressure off venue staff,” Mr Green said.

“It certainly makes the process quicker.”

The Service NSW app will include a number of security measures to help compliance officers and businesses with checking and validating a customer’s vaccination status, including a NSW Waratah logo hologram and rotating QR codes, similar to the Digital Driver Licence.

After monitoring flying fox samples from 2013-2021, researchers at CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) found the new genetic type in flying foxes in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia.

ACDP is a World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reference laboratory for Hendra and Nipah virus diseases.

Reference expert and CSIRO scientist Dr Kim Halpin said spillover of the disease from flying foxes to horses has still only been reported in Queensland and New South Wales.

“However, because Hendra Virus Genotype 2 is so genetically similar to the original Hendra virus, there is a potential risk to horses wherever flying foxes are found in Australia,” Dr Halpin said.

“It’s important to note that Hendra has never been reported to spread directly

from flying foxes to humans – it’s always been transmitted from infected horses to humans.

“We expect this new genetic type would behave the same way.

"And given the similarities, while more research is needed, we expect the existing Hendra virus vaccine for horses should work against this new type too.

“This finding really underscores the importance of research into flying foxes – it's crucial to helping us understand and protect Australians against the viruses they can carry.”

Another project, called ‘Horses as Sentinels, led by the University of Sydney and CSIRO and funded by a Biosecurity Innovation Program grant from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, detected the same genetic type earlier this year in samples collected from a horse from Queensland in 2015.

Veterinarians Australia, said the findings are a reminder there’s a risk of Hendra virus wherever there are flying foxes and horses.

“Owners and any people who interact with horses can reduce the risk of infection from Hendra virus and other zoonotic viruses through vaccination of horses or humans where available, wearing appropriate PPE, and seeking veterinary attention for sick horses,” Dr Dennis said.

CSIRO and the ‘Horses as Sentinels’ project team have been working closely with vets and laboratories around Australia to implement improved tests for horses with signs of Hendra virus disease.

A Pool of Memories

TILLIGERRY has preserved the memories of many locals who have passed on or who have served the community.

Indeed our pool has been named after Doreen Bradley, a woman who played such a pivotal role in having it built.

A plaque bearing her name has been set in concrete on the pool deck and another listing the names of other major contributors is fixed to the wall near the office.

On top of this, two gardens have been named after swimmers who are no longer with us.

Luke Potts, a lap swimmer and an employee of the local hardware store who died tragically young, has a memorial garden named after him located at the northern end of the pool.

Just last year, the late Bob Royal, a regular swimmer and community worker, had a garden dedicated to his memory alongside the

community hall and this spring the flowers there are coming alive with blossom.

His wife Sue, a regular swimmer herself, keeps it weed free and in top condition. q

onto family pets for up to one week where the pet’s owner is fleeing a domestic violence situation.

It also brought forth the option of partnering with a new service provider at Fullerton Cove.

“Being able to temporarily accommodate family animals for up to a week can make a big difference in whether someone chooses to leave a dangerous, potentially violent situation or not.

“It’s the first step in doing our part to help protect local people and assist them in escaping difficult situations,” Cr Arnott said.

proven to improve mental health and wellbeing whilst providing companionship to a number of Australians.

Domestic Violence Animal Shelter Programs have become more prominent as studies into domestic and family violence prove that owners take their pet’s lives into consideration when fleeing a difficult situation.

Providers of these programs across Australia include the RSPCA’s Community Domestic Violence Program, DV Connect’s Pets in Crisis Program and the Australian Pet Welfare Foundations’ Pets in Crisis Program.

ONCE again Port Stephens based Ampcontrol is winning awards.

This time it is for one of their collaborative power projects.

Boundary Power, Ampcontrol’s joint venture partnership with West Australian utility Horizon Power, has been awarded a 2021 Good Design Award in Engineering Design for its Solar Cube stand-alone power system (SAPS).

Ampcontrol Managing Director/CEO and Boundary Power director, Rod Henderson, said this was an outstanding achievement for the joint venture which had only launched in late 2020.

“The Solar Cube is the only SAPS of its kind in Australia that can be deployed and ready to export energy in under 90 minutes,”

Henderson said.

“Its innovative modular design means the Solar Cube can be factory preassembled to fit standardised shipping container specifications for easy transportation.

“With no site works required, deployment can occur immediately, making the Solar Cube well suited to support emergency services in their rapid response and recovery from major disasters such as fires, floods and storms.”

The Good Design Awards judging panel said the Solar Cube was a great example of an innovation led solution to support the increase in deployment of renewable energy into the Australian energy network.

The panel added that the Solar Cube brings important enhancements like its rapid deployment, and has immediate application for

remote locations, delivering a valuable power source to those who need it.

The Solar Cube offers power utilities an innovative utility-grade solution for remote or hard to reach communities where the cost to maintain and upgrade traditional poles and wires infrastructure can be significantly higher.

For remote and isolated communities which can be difficult to access, the Solar Cube’s stand-alone power capabilities can provide continuous, high quality, reliable power quickly.

The possible applications for the Solar Cube in developing countries are wide.

Already solar cases are being used in remote regions of Papua New Guinea to provide power to deliver babies, while children in some third world countries

“In addition to the permanent easing of rules for dining on footpaths and public spaces, we’re temporarily allowing outdoor dining on privately-owned bowling

greens and carparks, meaning businesses can expand outdoors on almost any piece of land they own to welcome more customers.”

The program activates emergency temporary alfresco measures for outdoor dining in parks or on private land with the owner's consent; and there are 45,000 grants for hospitality businesses to establish new alfresco settings; plus permanent outdoor dining as an exempt development for pubs and small bars state-wide.

This package is part of the NSW Government’s efforts to slash red tape and support businesses and communities to recover from the pandemic.

Safety Officer Chris Dimarco said Motorcycling the Hunter is aimed at ensuring a motorcycle trip to the Hunter region is both enjoyable and safe.

“For over a decade, councils in the Hunter have actively worked with our communities to promote motorcycling and improve rider safety.

This our third and most comprehensive publication,” said Chris.

The Hunter is home to

some of the most popular motorcycling routes in NSW, but sadly, in the five years 2015-2019, there were 1,479 crashes with motorcycle involvement in the Hunter region.

NSW has recorded a 50 per cent increase in rider fatalities in 2021, 39 motorcyclists have been killed between January and August this year, with more than half being the result of excessive speed.
