Tomaree Library courtyard to be transformed

PORT Stephens has been getting more and more vibrant.

Most recently Mural Artist Jordan Lucky has been working on a vibrant space at Tomaree Community Library.

This Saturday there will be a live paint where members of the community can come along and watch Jordan as he creates a magical scene inspired by some of the small animals and plants that are native to the adjacent Mambo Wanda Wetlands.

The live painting will be held between 9am – 12 noon.

The artwork is being funded by Port Stephens Council’s Vibrant Spaces Grants.

Jordan Lucky is the artist who delivered the signage at the entrance to the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary and he has works, not only in Australia but around the world.

When the NOTA caught up with Jordan Lucky to talk about this project he had been out and about capturing images of native species in the wetlands.

He was also seeking inspiration and references as to the quality of light and the structures that can be found within the

Jordan Lucky told News Of The Area, “The plan for the rest of the space is to include species, particularly the little ones that go unnoticed.”

Mambo Wanda Wetlands is a koala corridor, however the koala is an umbrella species and it is the other species that live in the

same habitat that Jordan Lucky is featuring in this artwork.

The work will incorporate different textures found in the bark on trees in the wetlands such as the Coastal Mahogany as well.

“There are a lot of species that are unique to that area,” he said.

Jordan is positive about the support he and fellow artists are gaining not only from the

community but from Port Stephens Council as well for mural artworks to create better spaces.

Jordan is also doing some work in and around Magnus Street and was one of the contributing artists in the mural that is featured on the alley wall at Naked Alley in Magnus Street.

THERE was a buzz on social media this week as locals reported the contents of their bins being secreted away in the early morning.

Several Medowie locals noticed that an unmarked white truck was stopping outside their house, before the contents of their

council bin was bagged up and then taken away by the unidentified driver.

Port Stephens Council was quick to notice the buzz however, and with a tongue in cheek reference to popular show ‘The Simpsons’, put locals' minds at ease.

DIABETES NSW & ACT are excited to announce the launch of Move with Women, a free group exercise program for women (18+) of all fitness levels and backgrounds.

The program involves a one-hour group exercise session every week for nine weeks, with an additional 30 minute health education session every fortnight.

The program will be delivered in locations across NSW, ACT and QLD. This fun, social and motivating program incorporates many of the factors that contribute to women’s health – exercise sessions, tips to eating healthy, techniques to relieve stress and anxiety, and an opportunity to connect with other

Sinking boat near Broughton Island THE Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked at 7:00am on Monday 18 January, by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, responding to a report of an emergency distress beacon (EPIRB) that had been activated in the Broughton

Island area.

The helicopter arrived on scene and landed at Empire Bay where four occupants had been picked up out of the water by a passing boat after their boat sank.

THE Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked just after 9:30pm on Saturday, 16 January to assist NSW Police with the search for a missing boat in the Fern Bay,

Kooragang Island area, which got into trouble while making its way back to a boat ramp at Raymond Terrace.

Rescuers received a mobile phone call from

all four male occupants, three in their 20’s and the other in his 40’s, with no injuries reported.

All four were transported back to Nelson Bay in a stable condition by Volunteer Marine Rescue.

With the aid of their torch, the helicopter crew were able to locate the couple with Night Vision Goggles.

The helicopter landed next to them and they were airlifted to dry land with no injuries.

THE Nelson Bay marina foreshore was reopened on Monday 18 January for recreational activities, while beaches were reopened last Friday afternoon.

Beaches from Nelson Bay marina to Fly Point had been closed due to a sewage leak and the community was advised to avoid swimming in the area.

During excavation works on Monday 11 January at Teramby Road, Nelson Bay, a sewage main was damaged and began leaking into the harbour.

Prior to Monday’s reopening, Port Stephens Council received water quality test results back that show the water quality has returned to normal levels.

Port Stephens Council will continue to monitor water quality to ensure conditions remain safe.

PORT Stephens Council's proposal to construct a new $250,000 skate park on the waterfront at Lemon Tree Passage has divided the community.

Some believe the skate park is best left where it is near the sports ovals at Mallabula.

Others assert that an additional skate park in Lemon Tree Passage would dovetail well with the other recreational facilities and bring more people to the area.

Steve Tucker believes that the proposed new skate park would be a 'win-win' for everyone in the local community.

“By effecting minor repairs to the old skate park, it would give the young people options.

“They will still be able to use the facility for their very popular get-togethers with BBQs, music and arts and crafts without the risk of upsetting local residents,” he said.

“Its central location is great and provides an

optional recreational facility for those attending the little Athletics, the pool and the football matches,” he added.

“It also has a BMX track nearby,” he added.

“The new one is still not at the design stage and community input will be sought before we proceed.

“We envisage a low key plan with pathway connections to the existing tidal pool , jetty, play equipment, shops and picnic areas,” he stated.

“Extra parking will be needed,” he said.

Protest of Cat Cull

ON the night of 17 December 2020, the Port of Newcastle sent a contractor to the Stockton Breakwall to cull many of the stray cats who made their homes on the wall.

Some of the cats were killed, and many were severely injured.

Hundreds gathered in immense heat on Thursday 14 January to peacefully protest these actions in an event organised by the Stray Cat Project.

The protest occurred outside of The Port of Newcastle on Wharf Street, demanding that the Port of Newcastle call off all future plans to cull the cats.

In line with COVID-19 guidelines, volunteers ensured that check-in procedures were in place, and that all protestors had signed in.

Darren Brollo, Animal Justice Party Region Group Leader, led the protest with powerful chants that were strongly met by the protestors.

“The actions from the Port of Newcastle were cruel, thoughtless and utterly unnecessary.

“The cats who were slaughtered had the same ability to feel fear, pain and suffering,” Darren said to the crowd.

“We will not be silenced, no excuse for violence,” chanted the crowds whilst holding up signs naming the cats including Harry, Rosie and Lily, calling for action.

The protest goal was to inform the Port of Newcastle that ‘The community does not accept your actions’, and to ensure that the thirteen remaining cats on the Stockton Breakwall be protected.

The Stray Cat Rescue had been working with the breakwall cats in a trap, neuter and release plan, aiming to rehome and adopt the cats.

Before the ordered cull, the group had already managed to bring the population of the breakwall from 100 cats to 40 with their successful program.

“Our job today is to give the voiceless a voice and demand justice for the breakwall cats,” said Darren.

AGL Port Stephens Art Competition opening January 23 THE AGL Port Stephens Art Competition is a launch event and fundraiser for the Tomaree Museum Project, which aims to develop a multi-purpose centre

comprising a Port Stephens regional museum, an art and cultural centre and a venue for exhibitions and conferences.

All artwork in the exhibition reflects the

historical and sustainability themes of the Tomaree Museum Project.

Winners will be announced at 11am on Australia Day, 26 January 2021.

First place winner will take home $2000, while

second place will receive $1200 and third $800.

There will also be a prize for the winner of the People’s Choice Award, which will be decided by a public vote.

The competition will be judged by acclaimed artist Paul Maher.

The Newcastle-based visual artist has been creating and exhibiting his art for thirty years in Australia and internationally.

The exhibition has been curated by Megan Barrass.

Summer Sailing at Port Stephens

SATURDAY sailing is a long standing tradition for the members of the Port Stephens Yacht Club, however the Summer Pointscore Series is being sailed alongside the inaugural Marineoutlet.com. au Womens Series & Boatyard Club Championship.

The point score races are being hotly contended, with the first race attracting 22 female sailors.

Some are new to the sport and “giving it a go” while others are seasoned veteran sailors, having crossed the Atlantic or others having circumnavigated Australia, either of which are no mean feats.

The First Division racers were off at 1:00pm sharp under the watchful eye of the starters, followed five minutes later by Second Division.

Port Stephens Yacht Club Shesails representative and Skipper of the Catamaran Subzero Cherylle Stone is keen to provide opportunities to women who would like to sail.

She often has a crew of inexperienced women on board for races where she teaches and inspires women to enjoy the sport.

For Stone, having a woman on the crew is all about having women doing the work.

At times that means her (quite often) all female crew not only handle the lines, helm and winch, it sometimes sees them up the mast, doing repairs or maintenance as well.

As a Shesails Representative she liaises between the club and Sailing

Australia on issues relating to women’s sailing.

Stone told News Of The Area, “In the past the club held a token helms-woman’s race, this series goes right across the summer.”

Alongside Stone there are four other female skippers in the club, and the vessels that race are anything from 15 foot to 51 foot long, with monohulls and multihull vessels in the mix making for plenty of variety.

The club also has junior members making sailing a sport for the whole family an option.

“Sailing is a great sport for women, you get to have fun, enjoy good company in the great environment of the Bay and get a good workout during the race,” she said.

This smart political thriller helmed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist) is a gripping tale full of intrigue and tension. In 1980s Beirut, an American diplomat (Jon Hamm) is called back into service to save a kidnapped colleague (Mark Pellegrino) from the group that is possibly responsible for his own family’s death. The script from Tony Gilroy (the Bourne franchise, Michael Clayton) is both tight and nuanced, and the film also benefits from outstanding performances from Hamm and co-star Rosamund Pike.

Overall, Beirut may be low on all-out action, but it is a realistic, gritty thriller that doesn’t forget to entertain in the process.

With cooking competitions, celebrity chefs promoting new cookbooks and foodie travelogues from all over the world, there’s no shortage of food-focused TV, and tonight QI is getting in on the act. Sharing a table with host Sandi Toksvig (above) are comedians Alan Davies, Mark Watson, Sara Pascoe and Phill Jupitus. They’ll be chowing down on fun facts and dispelling all manner of restaurant-related misconceptions, ranging from the power of rice to calorie counting, the psychology of cutlery and Ronald McDonald. In a highlight of the series, they are joined by Julian the Magnificent, who trains Toksvig in the art of sabrage, that is, opening a champagne bottle with a sword.

In this fascinating series, we get to go well beyond any well-polished public presentation to learn – alongside the star themselves – who and what has come before them and how all those tales have played their part. In tonight’s season return, Daniel Radcliffe (yes, of Harry Potter fame) delves into his family’s roots and, through a cache of old letters, uncovers a World War I love story and a disturbing jewellery shop heist.

NO, unfortunately you’re not over-reacting. Yours is a relevant concern. So much of what we do is conducted online, even more so thanks to our Covid-19 ‘imprisonment’, so it’s inevitable that our increase in online transactions has seen an exponential increase in cyber-scams, and the real estate industry is certainly not immune. As the financial commitment in purchasing a property is significant and the process has moved online, you need to be especially careful.

Don’t exchange account details between yourself and your legal representative or real estate agent via email.

Speak directly via phone or in person if you’re able to visit their office.

Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, intercepting legal representatives’emails, retrieving the relevant account details, altering them to their own account details, then forwarding the email on to the buyer who unwittingly deposits into the scammer’s account. To think that your deposit or balance could be stolen in this way is nothing short of horrifying. Remember that if you have exchanged contracts already and you are processing the settlement funds and they go missing, you are still legally bound to continue with the purchase of the property. It’s your money. Keep it safe. Deny scammers their windfall.

NOW that’s a huggable name if ever I heard one. I imagine someone named Mimi as having a bright smile, cute dimples and a soft and inviting body that just begs to be hugged. For a start, I’d suggest you stop calling yourself Mimi and go back to Miriam or Naomi or whatever your original name was before you shortened it Mimi, a moniker just oozing cuddle potential.

The problem with hugs is there are so many variations. Covid was great news for those of us more comfortable with elbow bumps, but now people are easing back into amorous introductions, things are fraught once more.

May I suggest clearing your throat before the introductions and mentioning it’s a bit sore — this should be enough to ward off even the most zealous huggers.

Alternatively, when the hugging hands come out to greet you, grab them before they get too close and do a sort of doublehanded handshake.

There’s also a range of T-shirts emblazoned with ‘not a hugger’ messages, just in case your hugging friends are slow to catch on.

IT’S been a long time coming but the beginning is in sight for the Medowie Social.

The people of Medowie have been waiting for a long time to see the $6.5 million facility reach its full potential and the new operators are hoping they can wait just a little longer.

The announcement of their opening date is expected later this week.

According to Charlie Way, one half of the culinary duo who will be running the show, they’ve had a lot of interest.

“I have had locals Facebook messaging, texting, calling and emailing and also dropping in when I have been there unboxing furniture some days!

“I’ve had enquiries for parties, music events, bowls, dinners, corporate meetings, raffles, and much much more,” he said.

For all the eagerness to see the venue up and running, Charlie said the community has been very welcoming.

“We’ve seen and heard so much support and enthusiasm, it’s so exciting to know we have Medowie behind as we work so very hard to get our doors open soon!

q The regatta is back in 2021 after a Covid enforced hiatus last year.

WITH safety plans in place and fingers firmly crossed, Sail Port Stephens is accepting entries for its 2021 regatta in April and once again aiming to provide an unforgettable sailing holiday for crews aboard everything from small dinghies to family cruiserracers and IRC racing yachts.

The forced cancellation of last year’s edition due to COVID restrictions only served to intensify the pentup demand for this must-do event on the sailing calendar, renowned for both its on- and off-water attractions.
