By Tara CAMPBELL THE Australian Labor Party has announced an investment to support defence personnel and veterans in the Port Stephens and Maitland region, by providing $5 million in funding for a new Veteran Wellbeing Centre.

Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Shayne Neumann said a new veteran hub to be located in Paterson would be a one-stop shop for veterans and their families to access a range of services; including transition, wellbeing support, advocacy, employment and housing assistance, and social connection.

“The centre will be a family-friendly space, and provide peer-to-peer support for younger veterans and their families, bringing together critical services under one roof.

“We want to see a facility run by veterans, for veterans, that’s inclusive and easily accessible for all ex-service men and women in the community.

Minister for Communications, the Hon Paul Fletcher, and Ms Vitnell attended a mobile blackspot location to better understand community concerns and hear about key locations where mobile coverage needed to be improved, including: Fern Bay, Bobs Farm (Sandhills), Boat Harbour, Cliftleigh, Gillieston Heights, Medowie/Campvale and Kurri Kurri.

“I understand that delivering for our community means working hard every day to deliver outcomes and I’m proud to have the Minister here during the first week of the campaign to discuss solving our mobile blackspots,” Ms Vitnell said.

“We need solutions such as upgrades to existing towers, or new mobile base stations so we can stay connected.

“I want to ensure the entire electorate has mobile coverage - especially in our towns, and on our roads and highways. “The ability to communicate is paramount, especially in times of emergency.

“Telecommunications are an essential service for all communities across the Paterson electorate and only the Liberal/Nationals Government has an economic plan that will ensure we can improve these services.”

The Morrison Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program has seen over 1,000 towers already built throughout Australia.

“The Morrison Government is committed to continuing to work with industry and state and local governments to improve mobile coverage and connectivity across Australia,” Minister Fletcher said.

“I welcome Brooke’s advocacy on this crucial issue to the community which is in stark contrast to the current local Labor Member of Parliament, who has not sought to regularly engage with

Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson is sceptical of the Morrison Government’s plans and said that she has been advocating for the community since her election.

“This Morrison Government has an appalling record when it comes to Black Spot funding at a local level.

DA approved but councillors aren’t impressed

THE Port Stephens Council has approved a development application for 37 Canomii Close, Nelson Bay, modifying the height requirement by 27 percent, or 2.5m over current building standards.

Any development application which requests to vary a development standard by greater than ten percent has to be reported to Council.

The proposal also seeks to remove existing vegetation on the site and construct two semidetached three storey dwellings and a one into two lot Torrens title subdivision.

Councillors Giacomo Arnott, Peter Francis, Jason Wells and Leah Anderson expressed their concerns over the development being in close proximity to a koala buffer zone, requesting the motion to be deferred for two weeks to seek additional information about the koala population.

“With all the information we have about koalas, we know that once they get in an area, they like to stay there and if their favourite tree gets chopped down, it can have a big impact on their ability to survive.

“I just don't want to be making a decision on something that might have an impact on our local koalas when we're looking at their extinction in the near future,” Cr Arnott said.

Councillor Anderson said that after a site visit, she could state that there may not be any koala feed trees, but that “it’s not to say that koalas don’t move through that corridor to other koala feed trees outside of the development area”.

This deferral was not supported by a majority of the Council and the motion was lost on the Mayor’s casting vote.

“I will not be supporting this deferral,” Mayor Palmer said.

“It’s a residential block of land that we are talking about.

“We can talk until the cows come home around 109 Foreshore Drive and that being Council-owned land, but all of this has spilled over now into residential blocks of land.

“So, if you own a block of land out there, you may need to be careful about what you can do on it,” he said.

Mayor Palmer stated that he “does not know where this will end”.

“Maybe over the next couple of weeks we will be able to have a candlelight vigil on the block or something like that,” he said, referencing an event held regarding the potential, controversial sale of 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay.

support services in the region as a result of long wait times for veteran claims, the Royal Commission into defence and veteran suicide, and Australia’s withdrawal from the conflict in Afghanistan last year.

“This $5 million commitment is about providing practical support on the ground for our defence personnel and veterans, and their families who may be doing it tough.

“A number of veterans and exservice organisations in the area, together with local Member Meryl Swanson, have advocated for this for some time and we have listened to this feedback and responded with this commitment,” Mr Neumann said.

Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said a new centre would be a much-needed addition to the Port Stephens and Maitland region, but would also benefit veterans right across the Hunter.

“This commitment from Labor will support veterans and their families across the Hunter, as well as ADF members posted to RAAF Base Williamtown in my electorate.

“It could also provide support for other groups in the community, like first responders, including police and emergency services personnel.

“The key to the new veteran support centre would be listening to the local community to design a tailored service that meets their needs.

“If elected, Labor will continue to consult with the local ex-service community on how to best support them and their families with this facility, and to determine an appropriate lead organisation, location and delivery model for the centre.

“We are on the side of veterans and families in Paterson and the Hunter, and we will give them the services they need and deserve,” Ms Swanson said.

Paterson is home to around 4,900 veterans and families, while more than 12,000 veterans and families live in the wider Hunter region, one of the highest concentrations in the country.

THE planning proposal for a caravan park in Anna Bay has been approved.

After a deferral at the March Port Stephens Council meeting, councillors voted to accept the outcome of the exhibition period of the planning proposal for 70, 70A, 70B and 70C Latitude Drive and 4473 Nelson Bay Road, Anna Bay. Port Stephens Council Strategy and Environment Section Manager Brock Lamont said that the planning proposal seeks to amend the Local Environment Plan to regularise the approved caravan park located on part of the site.

The approved caravan park has 270 sites on which manufactured homes are currently located or being installed

Karuah named as Top Tourism Towns Finalist KARUAH has been announced by the NSW Tourism Industry Council as a finalist for the 2022 NSW Top Tourism Town Awards.

The current zoning of the site is RU2 Rural Landscape which no longer permits this use, and the development operates relying on existing use rights.

The planning proposal also seeks to facilitate the extension of this use to part of an adjoining parcel, Lot 25 DP852410, by extending the additional permitted use outlined above, over this lot.

Subject to development consent and further approvals, an additional 170 manufactured homes could potentially be accommodated on Lot 25.

Over fifteen submissions were made regarding the proposal by a number of residents, community groups and government departments, however Mr Lamont says these have been noted.

The subject land for the planning proposal is not located within the Anna Bay town centre and therefore many of the key strategic directions outlined in the Anna Bay Strategy and Town Plan strategy are not relevant.

However, the planning proposal is considered to support the vision established in the strategy for Anna Bay as a small and vibrant town with a mix of retail and office space for local and visitor patronage.

The proposal is expected to deliver a range of social and economic benefits to the community including additional housing, employment through construction and long-term employees within the village and an increase in retail and service industry patronage for nearby town centres.

The proposal will now progress into a Development Application.

ANZAC Day Around Port Stephens

By Marian SAMPSON ANZAC Day will be commemorated in style across Port Stephens, with services across the region commencing from dawn.

This year is the first ANZAC Day since Australia’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, ending Australia's large-scale military commitment in the Middle East which ran from 1991 - 2021.

2022 also marks the 50th Anniversary of the withdrawal of the Australian Task Force from Vietnam, and the 80th anniversary of significant WWII battles to the north of Australia.

Members of the Irrawang High School Drum Corps will once again participate in local services, with the students playing at the Medowie Dawn Service and also at the 11am service at Raymond Terrace.

On the Tilligerry Peninsula there will be a Dawn Service commencing at 5.45am,

followed by a parade and march at 9.30 am commencing at the South Gate at the Avenue of the Allies.

A service will be held at the Tilligerry RSL Cenotaph at 10.00am.

Nelson Bay’s dawn service will be held in Apex Park from 5:30am to 6:15am.

The Dawn Service will be followed by a march which will commence at the Bowling Club and end at Apex Park.

The march will commence at 10:15am.

A service will be held from 10:45 to 11:45am at Apex Park, this service will be followed by a luncheon which will be served from 12pm at West Diggers.

George The Steer Rescued By SES

THE SES do more than help out people in need - they often end up helping out our four-legged friends as well.

Last week, NSW SES - Port Stephens responded to a large animal rescue at Nelson Plains.

Alysha Springett of the NSW SES Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “George the steer wandered too close to the edge of a flood ditch and found his way into a puddle of trouble.”

The steer weighs in at approximately one tonne and took around two hours to free from the muddy ditch.

George is a twenty-yearold Friesian steer who had sunk into the mud and become stuck with his front feet bent underneath him.

A march will commence at 5:45am, beginning at Ferodale Road near Bull and Bush and will proceed to the new memorial, with a service being conducted from 6.00 to 7:30am at the Medowie War Memorial in the Medowie Social car park area.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Swanson disputes claims that Labor has abandoned mining communities

By Tara CAMPBELL and Marian SAMPSON FEDERAL Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has hit back at claims that Labor has abandoned the region’s mining community.

The Minister for Resources and Water, Keith Pitt, visited Newcastle last Monday, stating now was not the time to risk such an important sector by electing a party “dominated by its inner-city left faction and beholden to the demands of The Greens to take government”.

“The choice for voters is simple,” Mr Pitt told the media ahead of the 21 May election.

“They can vote for a LiberalNationals Coalition that stands side-by-side with the industry and the 1.2 million jobs it supports, or a Labor party that is clearly divided over Australia’s biggest industry.

“While our resources sector has provided the backbone for Australia’s economic security through the pandemic, Labor MPs and senators have argued among themselves over whether they should support its future.

“Deputy Labor Leader Richard Marles is on the record saying the end of coal would be a good thing.

“Then you have Shadow Minister Mark Butler telling a

climate change conference that coal and gas have no future in Australia.”

Mr Pitt told News Of The Area that “coal from the Hunter region contributes to Australian energy and national security, keeping the lights on in homes and powering industry”.

“It also contributes to the record $110 billion in exports forecast for the coal sector this financial year, which means record royalties for the NSW Government to pay for the services we all rely on.

“In these uncertain times, national sovereignty and security continues to be a priority for the Coalition Government.”

In the past, Minister Pitt has also made claims that a Green-Labor alliance would end the coal sector.

“We’ll continue to support the sector, a Green-Labor alliance would end the sector, and I think that’s very clear.

“That’s the risk for every voter out there, every resource worker, everybody that relies on the resources sector for their employment; can you trust an Albanese government?” Minister Pitt said.

Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has strongly rebutted the Minister’s statements, asserting that she understands the vitality of the

local coal mining industry.

“I am the daughter of a coal miner and have friends and family who are coal miners.

“Coal miners are my constituents; I hear from them regularly and I know the issues they face,” she said.

She said that the first time she spoke in Parliament, she took a miner’s lamp as a symbol of her heritage, beliefs and aspirations, and that it remains “important to her today”.

“I am proud of the hard work and sacrifices made by our mining community to keep the lights on and to fill the nation’s coffers to build our hospitals, our schools and our roads.

“I never shy away from that pride and from that support and it has not diminished in any way.”

Ms Swanson said that the Labor Party actively understands the coal industry and shows a commitment to mining.

“Recently, with Labor’s candidate for Hunter, Dan Repacholi, who is in fact a coal miner, Labor’s Shadow Minister for Resources Madeleine King and I went underground at Yancoal’s Ashton Mine.

“The week after that I visited Bloomfield Colliery, as well attended the Mining and Energy Union Northern Region

Transforming Newcastle Airport into an international hub will generate significant economic benefits across the Hunter, creating more than 4,400 jobs and generating $12.7 billion in economic activity.

building the Hunter region.

Under the Plan, $750 million will be invested to support the Hunter’s expansion into new export industries while continuing to support traditional industries, strengthening the local economy and its position as a leading exporter to the world.

Brooke Vitnell, the Federal Liberal candidate for Paterson told News Of The Area, “This election is a clear choice between myself, together with the Liberal-National Government, supporting our resources industry, including

the development of our critical minerals supply chain; and the Labor party, who want to attack mining and resources and have no plan for a stronger economy.

“We’ll dig them up right here in Australia.

“We’ll refine them right here.

“We’ll look to make the products that use them right here.

“The Government's recent announcement around Australia’s critical resources is about backing our home grown resources industry just like the Liberals and Nationals always have,” Ms Vitnell said.

“Making Newcastle Airport an international gateway to the world will further enhance the Hunter’s capacity as a regional powerhouse that drives the development of our nation and makes us as strong as possible as quickly as possible.”

Lord Mayor of Newcastle Nuatali Nelmes welcomed the investment.

“We are emerging as a truly global gateway city with Newcastle Airport now having direct access to our key trading and tourism partners in Asia

and beyond.

“This funding for our passenger terminal will help complete that transition and bring the rest of the world closer to Newcastle with the upgrade creating more jobs, more economic growth and opportunities to showcase our region on an international stage.

“Our strong, united and consistent advocacy to the Federal Government has paid off, and we can’t wait to watch this important enhancement commence,” Ms Nelmes said.

$55 Million secured for International Airport Terminal

THE Hunter will soon be a gateway to the world, with the Federal Government providing $55 million to make the Newcastle Airport an international hub.

Building on the existing $66 million investment to upgrade the runway, the Government has locked in this additional funding to upgrade and expand the terminal.

This paves the way for international commercial and freight flights into Newcastle,

This WW I epic is an acute exercise in tension, reinforced by the ingenuity of its real-time premise.

The plot revolves around two British soldiers, Will (George MacKay, above) and Tom (Dean-Charles Chapman), who are assigned the critical task of delivering a life-saving message to another unit which is preparing to launch a potentially disastrous assault on enemy positions. Supported by the work of legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) engineers a heart-stopping film.

Life-and-death situations are the backbone of medical dramas. When a patient’s life is in danger, the melodramatic music surges and viewers are sucked into the high-stakes emotions. In The Good Doctor, the lens is instead on the small (and big) interactions between its characters. Shaun (Freddie Highmore) is one of the most unique medicos seen in a TV series; a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, he struggles socially and abhors change. In ““Piece of Cake”, he is pushed to the edge. It contains the standard life-onthe-line situation, but it’s the pressure of dealing with changes to the hospital’s staff and procedures that provides the pulse.

After five seasons of travel shenanigans, fans know what to expect from this offbeat series which sends a hotchpotch group of Aussies to various destinations around the world. Featuring the “bogan” Fren family, posh retirees Kevin and Janetta, and tough-as-nails country sisters Stack and Mel (above), even after years of sightseeing, there’s no real evolution in their hackneyed reviews. Scripted or not, we can almost guess how they’ll critique a location; perhaps that’s the definition of comfort viewing. Tonight, the amateur reviewers continue their tour around Australia, with the nation’s most far-flung capital city, Perth, the destination put under their microscope this week.

Greater Port Stephens Dragon Boat Club

By Karyn PRICE GREATER Port Stephens Dragon Boat Club recently had a member, Brendan Jones, complete for the New South Wales state side in the Australian Dragon

Boat Championships.

The event took place from 5 to 10 April 2022 and was held at Ramsay Regatta Course, West Lakes, Adelaide, SA. Both State and premium club teams from around the

country completed in the event.

Brendan competed in the Senior A squad (40-50 yrs of age).

Results included Mixed Regular Boat – Bronze, Open Small Boat – Silver

and Pursuit Race – Silver.

Qualification for the event included an erg rowing test and several inboat training sessions.

Once selected, training required travelling to Sydney twice a month for

Brendan has only been dragon boating for 18 months so to make the state side is an enormous achievement.

Hospital Auxiliaries hold Hunter forum

THE NSW United Hospital Auxiliaries’ (UHA) Hunter Region Forum was held at the Nelson Bay Golf Club on Friday 8 April 2022.

The Forum is held annually throughout Hospital Auxiliaries in NSW and is used for the interchange of ideas within branches relevant to fundraising, aimed at providing materials and equipment for the comfort of hospital patients and be of assistance to staff.

Tomaree Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary President Pauline Parrish told News Of The Area, “There is also a focus on promoting friendly interchange, catching up with fellow and new

members as well as Hospital Auxiliary business sessions.”

Attending the forum was Hunter Regional UHA representative Susan Ferguson, and Auxiliary members from Belmont Pink Ladies, Calvary Mater Newcastle, John Hunter Kids Club, John Hunter Site Carers, Singleton Hospital and Tomaree Community Hospital.

Tomaree Community Hospital UHA Branch President Pauline Parrish opened the forum and welcomed all those present.

The morning session commenced with a Welcome to Country, followed by the President's welcome and introduction of UHA officials, guest speakers and business reports from all area auxiliaries.

The reports demonstrate the significant amount of support in equipment and materials that have been supplied to the hospitals around the Hunter Region.

Also recognised was the efforts of the members of UHA and generosity of the communities we live in.

Like all hospital auxiliaries, the Tomaree Community Hospital is constantly fundraising to improve the diversity of equipment available on the site, allowing the caring teams at the hospital to deliver the best possible care.

New $3.3 million Tomaree Sports Complex honours local legend THE $3.3 million Bruce Scott Pavilion at Tomaree Sports Complex has been officially opened, marking a new chapter for sport in Port Stephens.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer joined Meryl Swanson MP and fellow councillors to officially open the newly built facility alongside its namesake, Tomaree Sports Council President Bruce Scott.

“The new Bruce Scott Pavilion is a game changer for our region and a wonderful example of local sporting clubs and our Council working together,” Mayor Palmer said.

“This project wouldn’t have been possible without the strategic vision and teamwork of the Tomaree Sports Council and Bruce’s contribution and commitment to sport over the last 30 years, which has been inspirational.

“We’re proud to name this incredible facility in his honour.”

The new multipurpose pavilion features change rooms, storage rooms, a canteen, a multipurpose room for training and events, a meeting room for sporting clubs and youth services, a

first aid room, referee’s rooms and accessible amenities.

As well as providing amenities for the 2000 registered players who use the complex for cricket, touch football, soccer and AFL, the modern centre will help to attract more events and visitors to Port Stephens that will benefit both the wider community and local businesses.

Bruce Scott said he was honoured to have the building carry his name.

“As a sports administrator, we get our reward and joy out of seeing junior and senior players using our amazing facilities,” Mr Scott said.

“Tomaree Sports Council has worked with Port Stephens Council for over ten years to replace the old amenities building to accommodate the growth in local sport, especially in women’s sport.

“The new pavilion is the icing on the cake.

“It’s a win for our community, benefiting sporting clubs and offering a state of the art function room capable

THE Port Stephens Council has endorsed a draft Terms of Reference for the Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management Steering Committee.

The Committee was established in 2001 to implement the original Compressive Koala Plan of Management recommendations and Action Plan.

“The next phase involves revitalising the Elizabeth Waring building into a high-quality sporting and community space thanks to NSW Government Government’s Regional Sport Facility Fund.

“These works will also include new pathways, seating and signage, encouraging community events, meeting and training programs to be delivered from this modern function area that overlooks the John Nell Match Field.”

The Committee, comprising representatives of Council, State Government agencies, koala care organisations and local community members, meets on a quarterly basis.

The purpose of the Steering Committee is to implement the Action Plan and monitor impacts associated as well as advising Council on any further immediate measures to address the decline of the koala population.

Key actions for which the Committee is responsible include prioritising areas for habitat restoration, promoting and overseeing koala research, investigating additional safety measures for koalas in respect to traffic issues, developing educational material and programs, liaison with the Bushfire Management Committee, investigating the establishment of Koala Conservation Areas, undertaking liaison with the media, identification of trial ecotourism areas, development of koala based tourism

guidelines and monitoring of the impacts of tourism on koalas, determining costs and securing funding for implementation of the plan and coordination of the Koala Monitoring Program Block Lamont, Port Stephens Council Strategy and Environment Section Manager, says that although it is the Committee’s role to implement and monitor the plan, there is an extent to their role.

“It is not the role of the Steering Committee to further critique and amend the Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management, nor is it to resolve issues associated with development or rezoning applications and koalas.

“Council will retain this responsibility.”

The terms of reference are now set to be reviewed every three years, or at the commencement of each Council term.

WITH the Federal Election called for 21 May 2022, it is time to make sure that you understand your voting obligations.

All Australian citizens aged over eighteen years are expected to take part in this compulsory voting process.

Pre-polling will open two weeks before the May 21 election date – but Australians must have an acceptable reason to vote early, Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers warned.

Most voting happens in-person on the day of the election, at polling booths across the country.

However you can apply for a postal vote directly through the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au/pva.

“While elections are in-person community events and we expect voters to turn out, Australians who won’t be able to make it in-person can now apply for a postal vote,” Mr Rogers said.

"Political parties can send postal vote applications in the mail or you might get a text message linking you back to a party website – it’s legal and the applications will get to us.

“However, the quickest and easiest option is to do it directly at aec.gov.au.”

Given the prevalence of COVID-19 infections in the community the Federal Government has amended voting legislation to ensure that those in isolation are still able to vote.

Fern Bay Bus Stop

IN the Port Stephens Council meeting on 25 May 2021, Councillor Giacomo Arnott put forth a notice of motion to investigate the bus stop on Seaside Boulevard in Fern Bay. At the most recent Council meeting on 12 April, a report into the bus stop was presented to Council.

“Upon commencement of a bus service into the then new Fern Bay development, buses stopped on the road verge at a location on the western side of the Seaside Boulevard/Ironbark Drive roundabout.

“At this point in time, the bus route only extended into the development to the roundabout as this was the only means for buses to turn around and exit the development,” John Maretich, Asset Section Manager of Port Stephens Council said.

Council, in response to safety concerns, consulted with relevant stakeholders and received NSW State Government funding via the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme to upgrade and formalise the bus stop via the construction of an indented bay in that location.

This was undertaken in 2013 and as the development of the estate increased in size and further road infrastructure was constructed, the bus route was revised by Transport for New South Wales.

The Fern Bay estate is a residential community

“We're going to back in our tradies, we're going to back in skilling our young people,” he said.

The Minister claims the reason behind the 30 percent figure is that the Morrison Government is “backing in tradies”.

“We're providing incentives for both apprentices and businesses.

My aim is to have as little waste as possible, and yet when I go to check the bin to see if it has been emptied, it is full of all sorts of items that I wouldn't buy due to their excess packaging.

What absolute rot that they are unable to limit their discarded items to the very substantial space allocated in their weekly red and fortnightly yellow bins.

You may have to hide behind a bush for a few hours if the time is inconsistent, but it seems worth it to maintain your current level of ethical bin use.

“In Paterson alone, apprentice and trainee numbers are down 44 percent under the Coalition.

“Under Labor, 7684 apprentices and trainees completed their training, compared with only 4297 under the Liberals during the same time.

“This drop in apprentices and trainees has left many businesses in the lurch, crying out for more skilled and qualified staff that simply don't exist,” she said.

THE Thompson Trophy is Nelson Bay Croquet Club’s Singles Golf Croquet championship.

The competition commenced in 2012 and since 2016 has been played in three grades, based on handicap.

In 2022, a Novice Grade was introduced for members with a handicap fourteen and over and who are yet to win a competition.

Nine members entered the inaugural competition:

Bev Apps, Fonzie Hansen, Anne Jensen, Greg Long, Jan Marshall, Marty Quirke, Jane Scorer, Ros Slaughter, and Rosemary Taylor.

The competition was played in two blocks of four and five players respectively.

Greg Long qualified for the final unbeaten from one block, with Rosemary Taylor second, and Marty Quirke qualified from the other block unbeaten, with Jane Scorer second.
