Artisan Chess Set To Raise Funds

each year during the summer holidays.

This year the Club decided on a very ambitious project to construct a hand carved Australian Wildlife Chess Set. President Roger Delaney said, “The idea was put to a general meeting and the membership decided to get

behind this major project, which has taken six months to complete and is thought to be worth around $5,000.”

The raffle will be drawn on stage at the Australia Day celebrations at Fly Point, with a platter, chopping

local health staff manage the community’s transition from pandemic to endemic.

The call came as official NSW case figures hit a daily

high of more than 30,000 over the weekend, according to NSW Health.

The artisan crafted chess sets pieces sees Australia’s iconic animals take centre stage with the King pieces crafted in the image of kangaroos, the Queens depicted as kangaroos with joeys, the Bishops are koalas, the Knights are Tasmanian Devils, the Rooks are possums and the Pawns are adorable wombats.

The light chess pieces are made of Jacaranda and the dark pieces are made of Rosewood.

Other woods used are Red Cedar and Bunya Pine for the board squares as well as Silky Oak and Tasmanian Oak for the box frame and legs.

The chess set also includes a table with carved side panels of Australian animals including a sugar glider, an echidna, a frill necked lizard, a bilby, a brush tailed possum and a spotted quoll and two drawers, feature carved fronts, which provide storage for the chess pieces.

The chess board top is removable and has a lined storage area underneath.

The project was a real team effort by the club.

Bob Parrish built the table and removeable chess board, Ken Richards carved the side and drawer panels, Vince Rush turned the bases, Graham Miller pressed the weights inside the bases (to give each piece a similar weight) and Geoff McLelland did the lacquering.

Ken Richards has fully documented it.

In the past, tickets were sold at the main shopping centres in the area but this year all the sessions, except one, were cancelled due to Covid and lock down restrictions, so the club searched for an on-line

woodwork projects and to buy and maintain woodworking equipment and supplies.

As a charity the Club also provides relief from social isolation for older men and women of the community and members then give back through these and other community activities.

In the past the Club has usually raffled a rocking horse, made by members and these have proved very popular over the years, so the wildlife chess set was very much a break from tradition and may not be repeated.

Swanson tests positive q Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson is one of many who have tested positive for COVID-19.

By Tara CAMPBELL ALONGSIDE almost 35,000 others who test positive for COVID-19 every day in New South Wales, Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson and her daughter have contracted the virus.

“2022 has kicked off difficulty for my family with both my daughter and I having tested positive to COVID,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.

“I, like many people, am deeply appalled at how woefully handled it has been under Premier Perrottet.”

Across the state, more than 100,000 people struggle to receive a PCR test, with some waiting in lines for more than six hours, and others camping out at testing sites to ensure they are tested.

"Getting information is difficult, the hotline drops out, and the information online is so general and challenging for people to navigate.

“It's almost impossible to get Rapid Antigen Tests, and many of the testing clinics closed when people were in closest contact over Christmas and the New Year.

“This has been the worst example of incompetent planning and crisis management we have seen in

Rapid Antigen Tests, often referred to as RATs, have been difficult to find, with large shortages on stock levels and a high price ranging from $35 for two single-use-tests.

However, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has clearly stated that he will not be making the rapid antigen tests free.

“We’re at another stage of this pandemic now where we just can’t go round and make everything free.

“We have to live with this virus.

“This isn’t a medicine, it’s a test; and so there’s a difference between those two things,” Mr Morrison said.

Ms Swanson told News Of The Area that she is disappointed by the actions of the Premier and Prime Minister.

“The Premier and Prime Minister have nothing to boast

about, given that we are now two years down this rabbit hole and people are still suffering and sadly, some are not surviving.

“I hope that our community members can stay well and if they do become unwell, they’re able to look after themselves because our government has failed us.”

Despite a difficult situation, Ms Swanson still wishes to thank frontline workers in this time.

“I want to thank the health professionals that tested us and thank everyone who is working their guts out to help our community at this challenging time.

“My message to the community is to ensure we all take this as seriously as possible as it's physically and mentally taxing, even for those who are double vaccinated,” Ms Swanson said.

Regional communities urged to take steps to prevent COVID-19 spread FROM Page 1

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) President Darriea Turley said regional NSW had responded magnificently to the pandemic so far, with around 93% of residents double vaccinated and a real focus on protecting the vulnerable in their communities.

“It’s what regional and rural communities do – they pull together in times of crisis,” Cr Turley said.

“We’ve seen it again and again, through drought, bushfires, floods, and COVID. “But there can be no doubt our regions face special challenges,

and you need only look at the evidence before last year’s NSW parliamentary inquiry into rural and regional health to see the cumulative impact of these.

“Difficulties in accessing health care, staffing shortages and the sheer tyranny of distance are just the most obvious issues experienced outside our cities.

“Supply chain issues also have more impact outside metropolitan areas, and have the potential to exacerbate the impact on our rural and regional health system.

“Now, with the Omicron variant infecting more Australians than ever before, we’re calling on regional

communities to do everything they can to support their local health professionals by getting jabbed with their booster shot as soon as possible.”

Cr Turley said that while the infection rate of the Omicron variant was high, reports indicated that the vast majority of double-vaccinated Australians who were infected experienced mild symptoms and were able to manage their own care at home.

“However, we all know vulnerable or immunocompromised people in our communities, so to protect them while also supporting our local medical professionals

it’s common sense to stick to the behaviours we know work, and book in for a booster shot,” she said.

Cr Turley also stressed the importance of the common sense and community spirit for which the residents of regional NSW were known.

“As frustrating as it is, shortages of Rapid Antigen Tests and a wait for booster appointments are inevitable in some areas, through no fault of our local providers,” she said.

“Local businesses may be shortstaffed due to people isolating because they are sick or close contacts.

Land Search Operations course Members from the NSW SES Port Stephens, Newcastle, Maitland and Singleton units recently completed their Land Search Operations Course.

The Land Search Operations course is specifically designed to provide members with the skills and knowledge to search for and locate lost person/s or items as a member of a land search team.

The course included topics such as team preparation, search environments, search formation and skills amongst several other topics to ensure the SES Units are prepared to help in all situations.

Raymond Terrace Fire On 4 January, crews from the Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue, alongside Raymond Terrace Rural Fire Brigade responded to a fire at the tip north of Raymond Terrace.

All brigades worked together to quickly extinguish the blaze before it spread to the pile and before it got too deep.

Heavy Rescue Vehicle The new Heavy Rescue Vehicle (call sign PTS48/ Port Stephens 48) has been fitted with rescue platform, specialised industrial and domestic rescue equipment, heavy lifting equipment for mining/ quarrying equipment, 20 and 40 tonne airbags, inspection camera, height rescue equipment and top of the line Lukas battery operated (eDraulic) and conventional (hydraulic) rescue tools.

The Heavy Rescue is designed and equipped to enable multi vehicle extrications to be performed concurrently, with the use of multiple tools.

The vehicle is now ready to serve the Port Stephens community.

Domestic Violence Incident This week, Police were called to a Medowie address in relation to a Domestic Violence incident where a 51-year-old male had assaulted a 48-year-old victim, damaged property and made threats to set fire to the residence.

The 51-year-old was subsequently arrested and charged with DV Assault ABH, Malicious Damage and Intimidation and ADVO was served.

Newcastle Airport On 5 January, a 17-year-old Queensland male checked in at the Departures Terminal Newcastle Airport.

Airport staff identified an item within the luggage that required clarification, believed to be a firearm and on the luggage being searched, was identified as a Glock Gel Blaster Firearm.

Police attended and the 17-year-old was arrested and conveyed to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was then charged with Possess Unregistered FirearmProhibited Firearm and Unlawfully carrying weapon through screening point at Newcastle Airport.

The young person is to attend Raymond Terrace Children's Court on 16 February.

100 million rapid antigen tests for NSW

THE first batch of 100 million Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) will be distributed to NSW essential public workers and vulnerable communities from this week to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the NSW Government will receive 50 million tests from midJanuary to February, with a further 50 million tests being sourced for delivery from February and into March.

“We are ensuring essential workers in our public workforce and vulnerable communities have access to free kits in this first round,” Mr Perrottet said.

“These tests, all approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, will help them to quickly ascertain if they need to self-isolate and ensure support and health advice is provided to those who need it.”

Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Stuart Ayres said the Government’s procurement teams have worked hard to secure tests that meet the TGA’s robust standards.

“The NSW community has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, which is why we’re able to confidently shift to this new phase of test and isolate.

“The procurement of these additional rapid antigen tests will support the NSW public sector workforce, support our return to school plan and provide support to those most in need.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the boost to NSW’s RAT supply will help alleviate the pressure on the NSW Health system – as well as provide protection for our most vulnerable.

“Most people should now use a RAT to confirm if they

are positive for COVID-19.

This allows PCRs to be used when medically required for clinical care, as well as drastically reducing the queues for PCR testing,” Mr Hazzard said.

“While this is an important step in our management of COVID-19, I urgently remind everyone that vaccination and boosters are the best way to keep hospitalisations down and loved ones safe.”

NSW Health and the Department of Communities and Justice will jointly lead distribution of the RATs, with logistical support from NGOs and Primary Health Networks.

Planning is underway for the rollout of additional tranches of Rapid Antigen Tests in the coming months.

More than 42,000 tests are already on their way to 44 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and NGOs supporting rough sleepers and refugees for distribution from tomorrow.

The NSW Government has allocated $250 million to

procure the first tranche of 50.1 million RATs. Case numbers across the Hunter New England Health District have been rising at an alarming rate given that many testing facilities have been closed over the Christmas and New Year period.

New Year’s Day saw the region experience 1,811 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Hunter New England region diagnosed to 8pm on New Years Eve and there were 6,060 total active cases in the District, 45 of these cases were receiving care in our hospitals and three were in ICU. On 8 January these numbers had escalated to a total of 4,432 new COVID-19 cases confirmed on the day, and of the 19,755 total active cases in the Health District, 106 were receiving care in our hospitals and nine were in ICU.

Covid caseloads forecasted to hit one million

FORECASTS on caseloads of COVID-19 in Australia are reaching new heights just as NSW reintroduces rules to help stem the rapid upswing in cases.

For now we are back to the 2 square metre rule, QR code check in’s and those using Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) being required to register positive cases with the authorities.

However finding a RAT test is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Hunter New England Health region has experienced high caseloads and there are fears that the official numbers are lower than the reality, due to the many testing clinics being closed or overwhelmed and turning people away.

The latest VaxEnomicTM Forecaster data shows that Australia will reach one million people officially living with a Covid diagnosis within days – more than lung disease and cancer – with one in every 20 New South Wales and Victorian residents already contracting the virus.

Provocate Managing Director Troy Bilsborough – a former senior advisor to Federal Health, Aged Care and Child Care Ministers – warned this could leave a lasting legacy beyond the latest Omicron wave that could swing the health vote at upcoming Federal and state elections.

Provocate’s VaxEnomicTM Forecaster shows Australia has passed threequarters of a million cases as at 7 January 2022.

Mr Bilsborough said

Provocate expected this, combined with growing “electionomics”, would see a swift shift in pressure on governments and businesses to treat Covid and any longterm health risks as chronic illness.

“The big risk for incumbent governments in 2022 is the growing number of Australian households directly impacted by a Covid diagnosis vote based on what their health, not their head, says,” Mr Bilsborough said.

“Healthcare influenced more votes than any other issue at the last Federal election.

“One million Australians being diagnosed with Covid means the virus itself – not just talk about it – has gone mainstream and it risks leaving a lasting legacy in voters’ minds once Omicron’s been and gone.”

Mr Bilsborough said prior to Christmas, Covid had largely been a theoretical threat for most Australians,

meaning governments were being judged on their competency as emergency and economic managers, not their healthcare credentials.

He warned governments to be careful transitioning their sales pitch to Covid being akin to a common cold too quickly or risk alienating voters further, particularly after the WHO warned labelling Omicron mild a “mistake”.

“The fact there’s now more cases of Covid than other key chronic health election issues like cancer, kidney and lung disease almost guarantees it will feature as a key issue in the minds of voters in 2022.

“Governments and business must navigate the next few months carefully and gently, particularly given the predicted increase in Long Covid claims and how any alleged chronic illness will be treated, funded and supported under Medicare, private health, social services

Oysters Open for Harvest

FARMING oysters is a bit like farming the land in as much as, if you have a good crop and all others haven't, the price rises and you cash in.

Remember the cyclones which ravaged the banana plantations in Queensland?

The Coffs Harbour growers were not affected and made a fortune with bananas retailing for around $16 per kilo in supermarkets.

It's a little bit like that now as Port Stephens growers have been cleared to sell their product while other areas are out of action after the heavy rains.

As one farmer said, “The oysters are fat with a lot of feed available to them and with limited supply in the markets the price has risen.”

Farmers ask local residents not to buy 'black'

oysters from unknown sellers as they are most likely to be stolen.

Paul North said that the holiday period in particular poses a problem with thefts from oyster depots and the racks.

“We are fighting back with CCTV and I have even employed a drone to patrol my leases from the air,” Paul said.

“It saves me a lot of time,” he said.

Stockton Management and works update

By Tara CAMPBELL 2021 WAS a large year for Stockton, with several coastal works programs and plans implemented to ensure the management of the coastline.

Lord Mayor of Newcastle Nuatali Nelmes spoke to News Of The Area to inform readers of the work that was undertaken in 2021.

“City of Newcastle has been working hard within the approved Coastal Management Program for Stockton since it was endorsed by the NSW Government in 2020, with the cornerstone

of the program, mass sand nourishment, continuing to be progressed along with the Deputy Premier's Stockton Beach Task Force.

“In August we completed a 210-metre rock bag wall at Barrie Crescent.

“This $3.9 million structure provides temporary protection from further shoreline recession in severe weather events and adds to the $10 million already invested to manage erosion at Stockton while we work towards the long-term solution of sand nourishment,” Ms Nelmes said.

of Newcastle announced the outcome of an extensive evaluation process that considered performance, environmental and social factors and included a cost benefit analysis of four feasible coastal management options to prolong the benefits of mass sand nourishment, including an artificial reef, an artificial headland, sand back passing, and maintenance sand nourishment.

“This work involved workshops with the Stockton Community Liaison Group along with a month-long survey seeking community feedback on the four options.

“Several NSW Government Agencies, including landholders at the northern

end of Stockton Beach, and the Worimi Aboriginal Land Council were consulted on the options,” Ms Nelmes told News Of The Area.

The outcome of the assessment identified that annual sand nourishment top ups was the preferred management option, over the longer-term, to complement the initial mass sand nourishment strategy.

Nuatali believes that the 2021 progress for Stockton was significant and now City of Newcastle are looking forward to implementing the next steps of their roadmap.

Meanwhile the NSW Government has announced a range of precautionary measures to provide additional support for the health system and community ahead of an anticipated peak in COVID cases later this month.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the state had met and overcome many challenges over the past two years and dealing with the latest strain was no different.

Some minor amendments to restrictions in social settings have also been made.

“These adjustments will allow us to continue to live with Covid and manage the pandemic in a measured and considered way,” Mr Perrottet said.

From 8 - 27 January, 2022, singing and dancing will be prohibited in hospitality venues (including pubs, clubs, nightclubs, bars, and restaurants), entertainment facilities, and major recreation facilities. This prohibition will not apply for weddings.

The character of Jack Ryan is well-known to film audiences, portrayed by a range of actors including Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford. This fifth incarnation of the action hero, which isn’t adapted from a book, is handled with aplomb by Chris Pine (Star Trek, above ).

After graduating from the military and witnessing the events of 9/11, young CIA analyst Ryan is faced with a two-fold impending disaster: a plot to destroy the American economy with a terrorist attack. Fast-paced, without giving up on character development, it’s a very likable thriller.

Don’t mistake this campy series as another true-crime documentary lifting the lid on murderous women.

The cheekily titled Why Women Kill is a gaudy and fun creation from Marc Cherry, the man behind the smash hit drama of the early 2000s, Desperate Housewives. Season two of the black comedy introduces a new cast and a striking 1940s setting, along with more swoon-worthy costumes.

In “Secret Beyond The Door”, we meet Alma (Allison Tolman, Fargo), who dreams of filling a recently vacated seat in her local garden club, led by the powerful Rita (Lana Parrilla, right).

However, her loving husband’s shocking secret jeopardises her chances.

MIRIAM & ALAN: LOST IN SCOTLAND ABC, 8.30pm

In what seems like a rather odd but fascinating pairing, actors Miriam Margolyes (Call the Midwife) and Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) take to a campervan to explore their Scottish roots. But rather than an idyllic exploration of the landscape and culture of Bonnie Scotland, this three-part travelogue turns out to be a rather intimate and personal journey that warrants packing a box of tissues. The duo start things off in Glasgow, where they visit the street where Miriam’s Jewish family first lived in Scotland, before journeying to the Highlands. At times, it does seem Miriam and Alan are “lost” in memories, rather than the beauty of the country.

Single lane closures with intermittent stoppages will be in place at times during the work, which may affect travel times.

No room for gender OPINION politics

DEAR News Of The Area,

I WRITE in response to the article on 6 January 2022 on the front page of the Port Stephens News Of The Area that featured Councillor Leah Anderson expressing her concerns with the lack of gender representation on the council. Port Stephens Council is made up of a group of people elected by the people for the people (ratepayers) to represent, to make sure the rate payers money is spent in a proper and just manner and take the ratepayers concerns to council.

Councillors are a servant of the people, and paid by the ratepayers.

All councillors are equal whether they are a man or woman.

Councillor Anderson, there is no room for gender, racism or politics.

There is a code of conduct for councillors to follow.

Councillor Anderson was only elected approximately one month ago to Council for her fist time and has not had time to even to find out how the Council works and the people that work at the Council.

Councillors do not run the Council.

It’s the hard workers in the council staff, the administration, accounts department, management, heath, planning, workers in depots etc.

The list goes on and on.

Councillor Anderson should look around at Port Stephens Shire and see what needs to be achieved.

Take Nelson Bay Road for example, which was blocked at Christmas with traffic at Salt Ash. The road needs to be widened from Salt Ash to Bobs Farm, now.

There are very few weather shelters at all sporting fields.

Karuah should be a thriving town ,but is going broke, it needs advertising and signage on the highway.

Raymond Terrace is the business hub of Port Stephens Shire with all the banks, the court house, Police station, council headquarters, and hundreds of businesses.

The town needs to grow with four to six story accommodation and office buildings.

Councillor Anderson, if you want to go down the path of gender and racism you should seriously think about resigning from the council.

It is an honour and privilege to serve as a councillor.

A councillor is not a boss or a manager, they are servants of the ratepayers.

For a council to operate it does not need councillors, or a third tier government.

It is tempting to use the opportunities granted to us by the COVID-19 pandemic to multitask, but it's also important not to abuse this situation.

If, for example, your work-leisure mix starts to include visits to the beach, reading a novel, uncovering the secrets of the Mediterranean diet, teaching your dog how to master yoga poses so you can make a Tik Tok and become an influencer, or becoming a Bitcoin investor, then you are possibly taking advantage of your working from home arrangement.

If, on the other hand, you are using your 'take a stretch and a deep breath' breaks to hang out the washing, then you are simply making good use of time.

Really, when you think about the number of workplace interruptions from water-cooler chit chat to extended lunch breaks and endless unproductive meetings complete with doughnuts and coffee, you are probably being far more efficient than usual.

There are some great apps that record and allocate your hours.

Maybe try using one of these and have a 'non-work-related' project.

This way you can keep accurate tabs on how many breaks you are really taking and whether they are becoming excessive.

Leadership Scholarships For Women

WOMEN in leadership forms an important part of representing the wider community..

The NSW Government has launched a new round of the Future Women Rural Scholarship Program to help women living in rural and regional NSW achieve their goals.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said $120,000 is available to women from regional, rural and remote parts of the State to take up leadership development opportunities.

“Regional women are

the lifeblood of so many of our rural communities they are the ones who keep us connected at the same time they are working and raising a family,” Mr Toole said.

“I urge any eligible woman who wants to boost her leadership potential and who has a burning desire to help other women in their goals to apply.”

Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women, Bronnie Taylor said the program is about boosting the leadership potential of women living in remote, rural and regional NSW. “I am also sure women

in our cities will realise what amazing work our country women can achieve and how working together can make a difference for everyone, whether you’re based in Bondi or Bourke,” Mrs Taylor said.

“This program was an overwhelming success last year, garnering hundreds of applications from women across a range of industries including science, agriculture, food, health and more.

“I have no doubt that we will see another exceptional result this year.”

Recipients receive a place in the Future Women Platinum+ Program worth $5,500, where they will take part in networking, mentoring and digital learning opportunities.

Recipients will also be invited to attend the Future Women Leadership Summit in March 2022 to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Last year’s recipient, award-winning artist Zoe Young from the NSW Southern Highlands, said the program gave her the opportunity to attend conferences on leadership and business, resulting in her recent exhibition in Los Angeles, breaking new ground for regional NSW artists in the international art world.

“Thanks to the Future Women platform and the generosity of the NSW Government, I am now in a position to be mentoring emerging rural women artists,” Ms Young said.

Applications are open to women living in remote,

rural and regional NSW aged 18-39 years old.

Applications close on 28 January 2022 and recipients will be announced on 14 February 2022.

Local cinemas supported by $20 million in Federal Grant Funding

IF you have been missing sitting back with your popcorn and choc top ice cream due to COVID-19, spare a thought for the small players in the cinema industry.

Lockdowns and patron per square metre rules have been crippling the industry.

The Morrison Government has announced an additional $9 million in grants through the $20 million Supporting Cinemas’ Retention Endurance and Enhancement of Neighbourhoods (SCREEN) Fund.

Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell has welcomed additional funding of $9 million for struggling independent cinemas.

“I welcome this extra funding support for independent cinemas such as Scotty’s Cinema Centre located in Raymond Terrace - the past two years have been a challenging time for many businesses, but regional cinemas have been hit particularly hard.

“This extra funding will enable cinemas

such as Scotty’s to recover quicker and keep providing entertainment and delicious popcorn for families across our region,” Vitnell said.

In regional areas it is independent cinemas that provide entertainment to the community and visiting tourists.

These businesses are local and employ locals and they offer social and cultural opportunities to the communities which they are a part of.

198 independent cinemas have already been assisted through the program and grants under the second round of funding will be available to eligible cinemas which can demonstrate that their box office revenue for the period 1 July 2021 to 30 September 2021, was more than 30 per cent below their box office revenue for the corresponding period in 2019.

All other eligibility requirements for the second round of funding will be the same as for the first round.

Applications can be made after 24

December until 30 April 2022.

IN times where social distancing is important it's great to see more options available to entertain the kids outdoors these summer holidays.

If you are looking for somewhere different or with extra facilities it could be a local school that you and the family can visit for some extra holiday fun.

The Share Our Space initiative opens the gates and gives the people of NSW access to the outdoor ovals, playgrounds, sports courts and gardens of participating schools during the school holidays.

Share Our Space is a commitment by the NSW Government to make schools the centre of our community.

THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club have been forced to cancel their annual Motorfest event, scheduled for March 12, 2022, as Covid-19 cases continue to rise across the state.

Juergen Seil, President of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club, said 110 Motor Clubs from across New South Wales were invited to the event.

Organisers were expecting 350–400 cars to attend.

“In late October 2021 with Government support things looked okay, but since then a dramatic and staggering increase in virus cases have occurred,” said Mr Seil.

“We had no alternative but to cancel this popular event.

“Hopefully things will come back to normal in the near future.”

The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club is a local motor club with 40 members and 85 Veteran, Vintage, Classic and Unique cars and motorcycles.
