Alesco Senior College is seeking to move its Nelson Bay operations to Salt a branch of Atwea College – unlikely to succeed in a Ash, but local residents have major concerns formerly Workers Educational traditional school by offering FROM Page 1

The plan for the community-based education provider would turn a formerly residential property on Recluse Place into a campus, installing three demountable units on the lawn.

The parent organisation is responding to calls for easier access to their services across the Tilligerry Peninsula, relocating the programs

currently running at the PCYC in Nelson Bay. The property was purchased by the college in early 2022, with plans being made public several months later.

However, those living in neighbouring homes are not convinced the move will benefit anyone.

The repurposing of the property would see up to 65

students and nine full-time staff commuting daily to what has previously been a very quiet, semi-rural street.

Matthew Clarke, a resident of Recluse Place, has submitted a lengthy response to the development application, citing numerous issues with the plan that would adversely affect the street in question including; inadequate access to sewerage, deleterious

effects of increased traffic, environmental concerns over changes to wildlife habitat, increased noise pollution and loss of privacy for residents “There has been no meaningful engagement and dialogue with any of the owners and residents.

“This already has caused significant anxiety and angst,” Mr Clarke said.

Alesco Senior College is

Association (Hunter) – a notfor-profit organisation with over 100 years experience providing education and training.

Speaking on behalf of the college, Rowan Cox confirmed that the organisation is still waiting on the completion of an acoustics report and a social impact report.

“Alesco provides a place for young people who are

a smaller, supportive, inclusive environment,” Ms Cox said.

“Very few have approached us directly to discuss these issues, though we are aware of them from the responses sent to Port Stephens Council.

“Community is vital to everything we do at Alesco, so we will carefully consider the community response.

“We simply cannot function without local support.”

“Every one of us in the street are on septic systems,” says Mr Perrin, “and we don’t have stormwater drainage that’s managed by the Council.”

The concern is that by raising the level of sand and soil, any redevelopment will cause a significant increase in water running into and flooding the neighbouring properties.

“That’s aside from the loss of habitat for local birds and wildlife,” said Mr Clarke.

Of deepest concern,

however, is that if allowed to proceed with their plans, the restrictions on development would reduce dramatically once the site was redesignated for education purposes.

“This has always been a fairly peaceful street,” said Arthur Tupman, another resident who has written letters to his community to keep them aware of the situation.

“We don't want our residential area to be encroached upon by commercial or even community-based entities.

“Where will it end?”

“TO be clear, I have no problems with Alesco’s mission,” said Matthew Clarke, a retired RAAF veteran who has lived on Recluse Place, Salt Ash for several years.

“It’s great that they provide opportunities for kids who need help, but there are just too many problems trying to plant a program like that here.”

Mr Clarke is at the forefront of his community’s response to the news that Alesco Senior College, having purchased the vacant property in their street, intends to establish a school on the site.

Mr Clarke compiled and submitted a fourteen page document detailing the concerns shared by him and his neighbours.

Dan Perrin, a long-time resident of the street said, “It makes no sense to try and put a school in a place like this.

“It’s completely unsuitable for what they would need.”

Mr Clarke and Mr Perrin explain that the entire estate, of which Recluse Place is a part, is designated as wetlands, and comes with a large number of restrictions when considering development and building.

Minns announces NSW Government Ministry LAST TUESDAY morning, NSW Premier Chris Minns announced his government’s first full Ministry.

The Minns Ministry is a reduced Cabinet of 22 Ministers, but for the first time in New South Wales history, will be 50 percent women (excluding the Premier).

Also for the first time in New South Wales history, a woman will hold the position of Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council (Penny Sharpe).

Again for the first time, a woman will hold the portfolio of Energy (Penny Sharpe), Police (Yasmin Catley), Regional NSW (Tara Moriarty), Finance (Courtney Houssos) and Regional Transport (Jenny Aitchison).

It is also the first time in New South Wales history that an Australian Minister was sworn in on the Bhagavad Gita (Daniel Mookhey), and a NSW Minister was sworn in on the Quran (Dib).

Prue Car will serve as Deputy Premier, Minister for Education and Early Learning and Minister for Western Sydney.

Penny Sharpe will take on the responsibility of Energy and Climate Change, Environment and Heritage as well as Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.

Yasmin Catley will take on the responsibility of Minister for Police and Counter Terrorism.

Jihad Dib will take on Customer Service and Digital Government, as well as Emergency Services and Youth Justice.

Tara Moriarty will take on Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW. David Harris will take on Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, Gaming and Racing, Veterans, Medical Research, and the Central Coast.

Rose Jackson will serve as the Minister for the North Coast.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said his team have a “lot of hard work in front of us” but are “up to the challenge”.

“We have a clear mandate from the people of NSW to rebuild our essential services, to invest in the people who look after us – our nurses,

teachers, paramedics, firefighters and police officers,” Mr Minns said.

“Our priority is to help families and households deal with the increasing cost of living, the energy crisis and to fix our schools and hospitals.”

Farmers NSW, the state’s peak farming body, said on Tuesday incoming Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty will need to hit the ground running to keep food production on track.

The organisation’s CEO Pete Arkle said while Ms Moriarty did not have an agricultural background, in her first speech to Parliament she had spoken passionately about “embracing technology and new ideas and rolling out the infrastructure that assists more efficient freight and people movement around the regions”.

“Agriculture is a critical industry for the state – not just in terms of jobs and economics – we grow the food and fibre that feeds and clothes people,” Mr Arkle said.

“The Minister has an understanding of what it’s like to live outside

of Sydney, but when you look at regional, rural and remote communities, there’s a big gap in services and opportunities."

Mr Arkle said NSW Labor had shown an interest in working constructively with the farming sector, with Mr Minns promising to deliver an independent Agriculture Commissioner and a fresh focus on domestic biosecurity at the NSW Farmers Annual Conference last year.

“There are some headwinds facing farmers at the moment, and it’s critical to have support for this important sector from the state government,” Mr Arkle said.

“There are opportunities for partnerships between farmers and government – say in environmental gains through on-farm natural capital enhancement – where management of land and incentives from government work together without impacting production capacity.

“This is why we have been calling for an independent Agriculture

Commissioner who can assist whole-of-government decisions to build better planning, environmental and production outcomes, and Mr Minns has promised to deliver that role.”

A number of issues such as regional roads, land use conflict, rural health services and the cost of living emerged a number of times during election debates hosted by NSW Farmers, and Mr Arkle said the onus was now on the incoming government to provide solutions.

“NSW Farmers is in the business of advocating for our members and our communities, but it is up to the government of the day to deliver,” he said.

“Penny Sharpe will have her hands full with energy and the environment, because we have seen numerous examples of avoidable conflict when it comes to renewables on agricultural land, and Rose Jackson will need to carefully navigate the water portfolio to ensure farmers can access that precious resource to grow our food and fibre.

“Jenny Aitchison will also have a huge task ahead of her in terms of repairing and improving our road and rail network, so we can get food from farm gate to dinner plate efficiently and cost effectively.”

Man drowns at Fingal Beach

A MAN has died after being pulled from the water in the Port Stephens area on Sunday.

Just after 10am on Sunday 9 April 2023, emergency services were called to Fingal Beach, Port Stephens, following reports a man was unresponsive in the water.

NSW Ambulance paramedics administered CPR; however, he was unable to be revived.

According to NSW Police, the man is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 70s.

Officers attached to Port Stephens Hunter Police District have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report is being prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Kate Washington MP joins NSW Cabinet

LOCAL State Member Kate Washington was officially sworn into the historic NSW Cabinet of the new Minns Labor Government in Sydney on Wednesday, 5 April.

Ms Washington joined the historically diverse cabinet with dual portfolios as Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Inclusion, after being part of the Shadow Cabinet for seven years.

“I am incredibly honoured, and looking forward to the important work that needs to be done.

"Having held these responsibilities as Shadow Minister, I have an understanding of the complexities and challenges in what lies ahead,” Ms Washington told NOTA. “The current state of the

child protection system in NSW is not achieving the outcomes that vulnerable families deserve,” Ms Washington said, adding, “the Minns Labor Government puts vulnerable kids at the heart of its decisionmaking.”

On Disability Inclusion, Ms Washington said, “I will work with Bill Shorten to make the NDIS work better for everyone, with a significant focus on increasing employment for people with disabilities,” referring to the Federal Minister for NDIS and Government Services.

When asked how her Cabinet positions impact her role as Member for Port Stephens, Ms Washington affirmed, “My primary role is as the Member for Port Stephens, and I will never forget that; I will always be there for them.

Pharmacists shave to help Jazzy’s Journey

COMMUNITY spirit shone through in a big way this week as residents and local business gathered together to support a young mother in the fight for her life.

Christian Hernandez of Amcal Plus at Salamander Bay led his team of pharmacists in shaving their heads to raise money for a member of their 'Amcal Family', Jasmin Kaschan.

Jasmin, or ‘Jazzy’, is well known to residents of the community as the young mother of two currently battling stage four breast cancer.

Jasmin’s work colleagues at Salamander Bay Coles organised a fundraising drive last year to help support her family through the difficult treatment process.

While initially responding well to chemotherapy, Jasmin received the difficult q

news in February that cancer had spread to her brain.

Upon hearing this news, Christian resolved to show Jasmin and her family that support in the community is strong.

“I came into work the next day and said ‘We’ve got to do something’,” Christian told News Of The Area.

“It’s such a heartbreaking story.

“Jasmin is a beautiful soul with two beautiful kids, and she’s been through so much already.”

Christian, who at one time was a neighbour to Jasmin and her family, saw an opportunity to care for the family, as well as raise awareness about cancer.

cancer,” said Christian, “or they think of it as something that is mostly a risk for older people.”

Jasmin turned 23 on April 5, which marked the perfect date for the buzz-cut fundraiser.

Her two children are both under five, and all of them live with Jasmin’s mother, Sonya, who has taken on the role of primary carer.

Flexible workplace arrangements provide opportunities for parents

WE all know it takes a special person to work in childcare.

Now some workplaces are making it easier for mothers to care for their own children while they support others to develop and grow.

At SmartPlay Medowie, early childhood educator Sarah Hurst is able to bring her primary school aged daughter Cinta to work with her.

Though their mornings begin quite early, Sarah and Cinta welcome the routine of going to work together.

As a proud member of the SmartPlay Medowie staff, Sarah feels fortunate to have a job she and her daughter both love.

The two are usually the first to arrive at the OSHC (out of school hours care) centre, situated on the campus of Medowie Christian School where Cinta is in Year 3.

For Sarah, bringing her daughter to work has been a tremendous advantage.

"Because my workplace has Christian values and they offer flexibility which allows my daughter to be there all the time (when she is not at school), I am able to work in a job that I love,” Sarah Hurst told News Of The Area.

Sarah, who has been an early childhood educator for the past four years, feels blessed to work with children at a key moment of their development.

“I love to have fun and laugh with

Erosion solution approved for Seaham weir pool FOLLOWING a meeting last Tuesday of the Seaham Weir Pool Interagency Working Group, the Seaham Weir Pool Erosion Management Plan has been released paving the way for the implementation of the Plan’s actions.

This milestone means Hunter Water, as the manager of the Lower Hunter’s drinking water supply, will move forward with fixing erosion issues and improving water quality in the weir pool, one of the region’s key water sources.

To implement the Plan, Hunter Water will lead the project including repairs to riverbank erosion through stabilisation measures, alongside riverbank revegetation and livestock fencing.

Detailed site planning with individual property owners has started along the weir pool, the 20-kilometre stretch of the Williams River between Seaham and just upstream of Clarence Town.

Consistent with community views and expert advice, the delivery of erosion repairs and protection will enable recreational boating activity to continue within the existing designated zones on the weir pool, with agreement from key agencies to strengthen boating education and compliance.

Hunter Water Managing Director, Darren Cleary, said the Plan provides a solution to ongoing water quality concerns in the weir pool.

“The gradual, long-term decline in water quality in this section of the Williams River continues to be a concern to us.

“The Williams is a critical part of our region’s drinking water supply, being the primary water source for Grahamstown Dam.

“This Plan improves water quality and delivers positive environmental outcomes, while also supporting social and economic benefits of the Williams River, such as boating activities, that the community values,” said Mr Cleary.

“The final Erosion Management Plan is a result of expert studies, government agency expertise, and feedback from the local community, landholders, boaters and other waterway users.

“We can now start implementing the Plan’s actions and we’ve already been having preliminary discussions with landholders to understand and assess their properties for proposed remediation work.

“We are grateful to the community for providing feedback at two drop-in information sessions in November 2022 and through the online survey on our website.

“The strong community support for action to prevent erosion and improve water quality has been incorporated into the final Plan.

“We also acknowledge the planning and leadership of the Seaham Weir Pool Interagency Working Group, which includes representatives

from Dungog Shire and Port Stephens Councils, Transport for NSW, and Hunter Local Land Services,” said Mr Cleary.

The Plan was prepared in collaboration with these local and state government agencies, in consultation with NSW Soil Conservation Service and independent experts at the University of NSW’s Water Research Laboratory.

Hunter Water and the NSW Government are jointly funding delivery of the Erosion Management Plan.

Reflective garden for hospital

THE Rotary Club of Nelson Bay is building a sensory garden and reflective space at the Tomaree Community Hospital.

The Club is responsible for funding and building the garden, which aims at enhancing patient wellbeing.

The project currently has approval and full support from Hunter New England Health, with the garden to be constructed outside the palliative care area of the hospital.

The garden will be able to be viewed by the patients from their bedsides, and will be used by palliative care patients, hospital staff, families of patients and visitors.

Port’s Friendship Group visits Westpac Rescue

THE Port Stephens Friendship Group paid a visit to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service last week, getting an up close and personal look at the vital work the service performs.

“We were lucky enough to see a helicopter going through its maintenance after morning tea that was provided by the Red Shirt volunteers,” said Keith Hobbs, President, Port Stephens Friendship Group.

The group's guide provided them with an extensive description of the maintenance

procedure, which takes over nine weeks and is completed every four years.

After witnessing the service’s meticulous methods and the hangar, Friendship Group president Keith Hobbs provided the chopper service with a donation.

The Friendship Group followed the visit to the service with lunch at Wests New Lambton.

“The Friendship Group has a very interesting series of trips organised in the next few months with an eight-day trip to the Northern Tablelands in April and a ferry trip on the Wangi Queen in May with others to follow,” Keith said.

“If you would like to enjoy some social activity or are new to the area, come and join us for a laugh or two during our monthly activities.”

Len Roberts and ABC settle defamation proceedings with published apology

DEFAMATION proceedings launched by Tea Gardens’ Len Roberts against the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) have been settled, with the ABC publishing an apology to Mr Roberts.

The proceedings centred around an episode of the ABC’s Four Corners program, entitled Obeid Inc, which aired in November 2021.

The episode explored links between a number of planned residential developments on the NSW Mid North Coast and the Obeid family.

Mr Roberts was interviewed for the program, with questions raised about his involvement in development plans for land at Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest; both in his capacity as CEO of the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council and as a MidCoast Councillor.

On Tuesday 4 April, the ABC offered the following apology on

their website.

“On 8 November 2021 the ABC broadcast a program called Obeid Inc and published a transcript of that program on the ABC website.

“The publications included an interview with Mr Len Roberts, a First Nations person, and a former Councillor of the MidCoast Council, and a member and former CEO of the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council (KLALC).

“The publications contained allegations concerning the Obeid family’s role in property developments on the north coast of NSW. “The ABC did not intend to suggest that Mr Roberts was working or co-operating with the Obeids or that Mr Roberts behaved in any way inappropriately in his roles as a former councillor and former CEO of the KLALC. “If the program did inadvertently make those allegations about Mr

Roberts the ABC unreservedly withdraws them.

“The ABC apologises to Mr Roberts for any hurt or embarrassment caused by the publications.”

A spokesperson for the ABC told News Of The Area, “The proceedings were commenced by Mr Roberts’ statement of claim filed in September 2022, which set out his concerns about the program.

“The ABC filed a defence in November 2022.

“The proceedings have since been resolved to both parties’ satisfaction on confidential terms including discontinuance of the proceedings and an agreed statement on the ABC Corrections and Clarifications webpage.”

Mr Roberts told NOTA he hopes the public apology from the ABC will “help restore” his reputation on the Myall Coast.

“I’m hopeful that it will be seen

that I was wronged,” he said.

“The defence lodged in the Federal Court case by the respondent did not ever say that what was broadcast in the Four Corners program against me was true.

“Defences centred on issues of ‘public interest’.

“I was never able to understand how what was said about me could be in the public interest.”

Mr Roberts has maintained his innocence since the program aired.

“I hope that the outcome will be to restore my good name, recognising that I have always denied the truth of the allegations made about me in every respect.

“The public record shows that despite statements to the contrary I did declare a conflict of interest when the DA came before Council as required under council obligations in the matter as an Aboriginal and former CEO of KLALC.”

Boardwalk in disrepair, vandalised

VANDALISM, rot and time have wrought destructive effects upon the boardwalk that links Pindimar North to Pindimar South, with the latest case reported on Good Friday, 7 April.

Unofficial reports from locals in the area suggest that at some time between Good Friday evening and Easter Saturday morning, planks from the Boardwalk were removed, while some well-meaning locals have attempted to fix the gaps.

However, seeing at the boardwalk as a whole, it is difficult to determine if the damage visible along the entire span is due to vandalism, or extensive weathering.

“The boardwalk is rotting in several places, but this is to be expected,

given the environment,” said Vivian Panhuber, President of the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association (PBCA), referring to the corrosive effects of saltwater and oceanic tides among the

“The MidCoast Council approved a budget of $175,000 to restore the boardwalk, but that was in late 2022, and any action was pushed to March, and it is now April and nothing has been done,” Ms Panhuber

told NOTA. The boardwalk was originally built in 2004, by a volunteer workforce of 62 locals who put in a total of 2200 man-hours, bringing the total cost to $15,000 ($10,000 of which comprised a grant

from the Great Lakes Council) less than twenty years ago.

A patchwork of plywood on the southern end of the boardwalk represents Council’s most recent attempt to fix gaping breaches, the result of several cross-planks rotting away.

In some spaces, rusty screw and nail heads protruded hazardously from the walk, a clear and present danger to pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Underscoring to the serious safety concerns plaguing the boardwalk, Ms Panhuber also added, “It is the only refuge for pedestrians in case of a bushfire, unless we all just wade into the bay.”

The Pindimar boardwalk is the only direct connection between North and South Pindimar, the only other route being the 7km road up the hill and through the fire-prone eucalyptus forest.

Easter Raft Races is all the rage

GUSTY winds and choppy seas could not sour spirits on Easter Sunday, 9 April, as the annual ‘Anything that Floats’ Race was held on South Pindimar beach by the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association (PBCA).

At 10:30am, four teams of raft-racers braved cold water, racing around buoys, then returning to shore... and unparalleled glory.

The line-up included ‘Farrah the Flamingo’, the ‘Unicorns’, the ‘Toucan’, and the ‘Adventure Kings & Queens’ all the way from Chisholm.

The racers pushed, pedalled, and paddled the course, with a tight start dispersing quickly.

The Unicorns suffered a cataclysmic capsizing at the

first buoy, despite a valiant effort upon their inflatable steed.

Farrah the Flamingo had busy legs, while the Toucan lost a paddle and was momentarily marooned.

The ‘Adventure Kings & Queens’ led on their homemade assembly of SUP and boogie boards, prevailing as first past the post, and proclaimed winners once ashore.

“It’s a great morning of community fun, despite the blustery conditions,” Vivian Panhuber, President of the PBCA, told NOTA, after calling the race.

“We had concerns about the wind and tides, but overall, there was great visibility,” said SES Stroud Unit Deputy Commander Greg Snape, proud to have supported the Race for the last eight years.

The SES had flood rescue specialists on hand, just in case.

Next were two “first past the thong” Tug-O-War bouts, the kids’ ending in Easter egg prizes, the adults’ ending in a graceful reminder of inertia and gravity.

The kids were then unleashed upon an egg hunt, with some spotting mother lodes while the rest vanished into the mangroves, halfway to Carrington.

The raffle, drawn by SES Dep Cmdr Snape, saw more Easter goodies go out and raised funds for the PBCA. “Raffle proceeds will go towards the repainting and replacement of windows on the Community Association Hall, and hopefully to some outdoor space paving... and a new toilet, if any is left over,” Ms Panhuber told NOTA.

AFTER three years of restrictions the ladies of the Fingal Haven Craft Group are finally able to invite people to join them for their annual fundraising fair.

Established nearly 27 years ago, the hardworking collective of Fingal Haven residents has long been more than a simple shared-interest group – they have been finding ways to offer support to their community by raising money and working closely with the staff of Harbourside Haven to best care for their neighbours living with the effects of ageing.

“This all began in one resident's villa,” said Mollie Carter, president of the craft group for nineteen years.

“We first started raising money by having a ‘happy hour’ every week.

“We were raising money for the village centre.”

Now the group occupies their own space in that centre, where the ladies involved gather every Tuesday.

“One of the great things about working in aged care is seeing how residents will work to care for one another,” said Kylie Jacques, the Executive Assistant to the CEO. “Once the Bill King facility was commissioned these wonderful ladies began supporting dementia care with their beautiful work.”

Coordinating with staff each year the group uses the funds raised to purchase something that has been specifically chosen to benefit elderly people living with dementia.

Although the Bill King facility has now been closed, the craft group are continuing their good work.

Nelson Bay Gropers women clinch Crescent Heads Rugby Sevens trophy q Jubilant Nelson Bay Gropers players celebrate their trophy win at the recent Crescent Heads Sevens Womens Rugby tournament.

By Chris KARAS THEIR playing stocks have been severely ravaged but everything points to another competitive season in 2023 for the Nelson Bay Gropers Rugby Club.

The loss of 60 players through retirement and unavailability is a crippling blow to the famous Gropers, who underlined their depth of talent with a creditable fourth placed finish in the Newcastle Hunter Rugby Union Premier Division Club Championship last season.

But just like their logo of the fighting Blue Groper – a revered local fish known for its power and tenacity – the club is determined to chalk up strong performances in the 2023 Divisional Sub District competition.

Gropers Club President Gavin Rocher told News Of The Area, “The loss of so many players was unfortunate but not a deterrent to our Men's squad for the season ahead.

“With so many of our talented youngsters taking a break from the game it hasn’t been the ideal preparation for our 2023 campaign,” revealed Rocher.

“We still have a core of senior experienced and promising players back on deck that can lead us to the finals in this year’s Sub District series,” he said.

Established for 54 years and

based at Bill Strong Oval, Nelson Bay Gropers will field a mens team this season in Hunter Divisional Rugby; junior sides ranging from Under 8s to Under 18s in the Newcastle Hunter Rugby competition and hopefully a women's team.

Players to watch in 2023 include talented flankers Sam Rocher and Nathan Oliver, prop Nathan McLeay and stalwart centre Michael Hotene who continues to give the club sterling service.

The Nelson Bay women's team – under the expert guidance of Girls coordinator Leigh Byfield - are looking to consolidate their numbers and have opened their 2023 campaign on a positive note by winning the recent Crescent Heads Sevens pre-season trophy.

The girls are also in strong contention for the Women's Summer Sevens title.

Former Wallaby centre and respected sports commentator Morgan Turinui was a special guest at the Gropers season launch last Wednesday night.

Turinui, who made 20 appearances for the Wallabies and 65 with the NSW Waratahs, has spent the past sixteen years playing and coaching rugby at the highest level in both hemispheres.

He has great insight into the running of High Performance systems and the building of relationships

in high pressure, results driven environments.

DEAR Jasminda, I follow a local community page on social media because I like to know what's going on in the local area.

I've noticed, though, that there is ongoing racist and derogatory remarks.

I'm not game to comment back because then I'll be trolled.

Why do people have to be so horrible?

I lost my father to asbestos five years ago - 35 years after his exposure to the mineral in his workplace.

Some of those he worked alongside have not been impacted.

Working in a science lab, the exposure was minimal.

So my message is, it doesn’t take much and everyone dealing with asbestos needs to take care.

Because, in my experience, mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos, can’t be cured and is a very hard way to die.

Unknowingly, many Australians expose themselves and their families to asbestos after undertaking DIY renovations without being conscious of its presence in their homes.

According to the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, a staggering one in three homes in Australia built before 1990 contain the deadly asbestos fibre.

Head of National Asbestos and Dust Diseases at Slater and Gordon, Joanne Wade, said that whilst people love to take advantage of a long weekend to finish home projects, it is important to know that when disturbed, asbestos poses a very real risk.

There are strict rules on the disposal of asbestos.

“If you are a homeowner or you're thinking about renovating, it's important to be aware of asbestos.

“The handling and removal of asbestos is a regulated activity and must be carried out in accordance with certain guidelines.

“Before commencing any building or renovating around the home, it's a good idea to seek out accurate information about asbestos.

“We recommend the use of a licensed asbestos removal contractor to test, handle and remove all asbestos-based building materials.

“Special precautions should always be taken, even for minor renovation works that don't require Council approval.

“To dispose of asbestos, take to Newline Road Waste Facility.”

REMEMBER the good old days when the only opinions you heard were those from family and friends or the heavily monitored ones in the local paper?

It was easy, back then, to believe that most people had similar values.

Social media offers a plethora of opinions and unfortunately the notion of free speech has opened the door to keyboard cowards.

Unless the page has vigilant moderators, the trolls will continue to write obscene comments, probably with the intent of seeking attention to the detriment of those with common decency.

There's little point in engaging with them as you'll just be giving them the attention they desire. I would message the administrators of the page and alert them to their own rules.

If they don't have the time to effectively monitor their page, perhaps they need to remove it.

Raymond Terrace Writers Group launch anthology

FOR writers being published is an important step on the journey of developing and sharing their craft.

The Raymond Terrace Writers Group launched the fourth edition of their anthology series, entitled ‘And so write all of us’, at Raymond Terrace Library on April 1.

Group member Jan Dobbie told News Of

The Area, “Members read a piece from the book to the audience and shared morning tea after the readings.

“Port Stephens local Fiona Brown, a professional coach and published author, performed the role of MC most capably,” she said.

The anthology features 57 stories, all written locally.

Copies of the book are available for purchase from the not-for-profit group for $10 each.

Writers of any age or style are most welcome to participate in the Raymond Terrace Writers Group.

The group holds fortnightly meetings at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club on Sunday afternoons, commencing at 3pm during nondaylight savings months and at 4 pm during daylight savings.

There’s possibly nothing more Aussie than Santa on the beach. After a hiatus during the height of the pandemic, this much-loved doco series celebrating Bondi’s lifeguards and the Aussie beach lifestyle returns tonight with its 17th season – and lifeguard Harries cruising the sun-soaked beach on motorbike wearing a Santa suit. The season premiere opens on a joyful note, as the throngs descend on the beach on Christmas Day. Later, Harries faces one of the toughest moments of his long lifeguarding career when he’s faced with a baby who has stopped breathing. A microcosm of life’s highs and lows, Bondi Rescue pulls at the heartstrings.

A hotbed of money, lust, partying and ambition, Sin City is the ideal stomping ground for this provocative reboot following a group of criminal investigators.

The fifth instalment in the long-running franchise, CSI: Vegas is unashamedly formulaic and nostalgic, with crime lab scenes reigning supreme. To fans’ delight, CSI stalwart Marg Helgenberger bolstered the ranks by joining the cast, which also stars Mandeep Dhillon (After Life) and Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights, right), for its second season. Of course, there’s predictably some oddly compelling scenarios thrown into the mix.

Tonight, in “Third Time’s the Charm”, the curious case involves the death of competitiveeating contestant.

GRAND DESIGNS

ABC, 7.30pm

This iconic series returns with its 20th season, celebrating two decades of homeowners (wrongly) declaring: “We’ll be in by Christmas!”. Over the years, a smorgasbord of inspiring, different and usually very expensive builds have been documented. Sardonic host Kevin McCloud (above) still admirably sports an eagle-eyed enthusiasm and entertaining candour, and this new batch of builds and owners is intriguing as ever. Tonight, McCloud meets Colin and Adele, following the couple’s stunningly designed yet fraught dreambuild journey, which would reduce most to a broken mess. Of course, they declare that the emotional and financial turmoil was worth it.

Netballers eye state glory

q Sydney Swifts premiership winning netballers Maddy Turner, Susan Pettitt and Paige Hadley were a popular trio with youngsters at the recent SP Netball Clinic hosted by Nelson Bay Netball Association.

PORT Stephens and Nelson Bay Netball Associations will parade their emerging and senior talent at this year’s annual Netball NSW State Championship tournaments.
