Friends of Tomaree National Park volunteers marked World Environment Day, and are extending opportunities for the community to become involved and give a helping hand.

Safety measures for the New England Highway and Pacific Highway connection announced carriageway extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway connecting the motorway at Black Hill to the Pacific Highway at Raymond Terrace.

The works include a 2.6km bridge over the New England Highway and Hunter River, and upgrades to the surrounding network.

additional safety measures for the connection between the New England Highway and the Pacific Highway with works on safety signage to commence next week.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the NSW Government is providing almost $1 million through the Safer Roads Program to help reduce the risk of crashes on this key route linking Newcastle with the New England and Pacific highways.

“These improvements will help the 65,000 motorists travelling daily on this route through Hexham to complete their journeys safely and return to their loved ones,” Mr Martin said.

“The project will also generate work for about 15 local workers, providing a much-needed boost to the local

economy as we continue to recover from COVID-19.”

Mr Martin said Transport for NSW will be carrying out work on a 6.5 kilometre section of the Pacific Highway, between Ferry Road and the Hexham Bridge.

“This will involve installing four advanced warning signs with flashing lights to warn motorists to prepare to stop, together with two vehicleactivated signs with flashing lights to detect the speed of vehicles and warn drivers to slow down when traffic is queuing ahead,” Mr Martin said.

“These signs and some additional static signs will help to improve safety along the route, especially when traffic is heavy.

Work will also involve tree trimming to improve sight distance, trenching and

electrical work and concreting to install the new signs.

Crews started work on Monday 7 June and are expected to complete the project by the end of June, weather permitting.

To reduce the impact to motorists, work will be carried between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday.

Lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in place during work hours for the safety of workers and road users.

Motorists are advised to allow up to five minutes extra travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Getting to and from Port Stephens for holidays and work is just about to become safer.

The driver of the vehicle has been described as Mediterranean/Middle Eastern in appearance, aged between 30 and 40, with brown eyes, dark skin and a close-cropped beard.

Investigation underway following sexual touching of teenage girl THE Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad have commenced investigations after a girl was sexually touched in the Hunter Region earlier this week.

On Tuesday 1 June 2021, a 15-year-old girl commenced a conversation over a social

media chat site with a person claiming to be a 17-year-old boy.

The pair agreed to meet later that evening and the girl started walking along Sergeant Baker Drive, Salamander Bay. As she approached the intersection of Bagnall Beach

Road, about 8.30pm, a vehicle, described as a red small sedan, stopped and a person called out her name.

The girl got into the car before noticing a man driving, and a second man in the rear passenger seat.

Proposed Changes To Dog Off Lead Areas

DOGS are a part of many families here in Port Stephens.

We have big dogs, small dogs and active dogs and they all enjoy getting out for a walk.

The RSPCA tells us that there are 29 million pets in Australia and 61% of households have a pet and 38% of those are dog owners.

Residents in and around Anna Bay and Boat Harbour are not all convinced about proposed changes to dog offlead areas which Council is proposing.

Kelly Hammond told News Of The Area, “Council is proposing to remove most of the off-lead area at Iluka Reserve in Boat Harbour.

“This major change was not discussed during consultation and has come completely unexpected by the community.”

Hammond went on to say the proposed changes have been sent out in the survey format by Council under the title of Have Your Say! “It is difficult to make informed decisions without the facts, 400 people completed the survey before

At Iluka Reserve, perhaps more than anywhere else in Port Stephens, there is a space for contemplation, with Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network having created a space for those in need.

She believes that the local dog walkers have felt part of this and support the space.

“It's common knowledge dogs positively impact the mental health and wellbeing of their owners.

“If Council has a clear vision or reason for stopping dogs off leash, please be transparent,” said Hammond.

“By denying dogs to be off-leash at boat harbour, you are denying the exercise and special interaction between these owners and their companions and other dog owners they may meet that could save a life,” she said.

“The intent of the review was always to improve signage, access and information for dog owners and non dog owners so that everyone can enjoy our beautiful beaches,” she said.

For Lionel and Margaret Lewis from Tanilba Bay, their unexpected Lotto win of one million dollars didn't really change their lifestyle one little bit.

In 1980, the retired couple bought an old house from the RAAF at Williamtown where Lionel served as a sergeant.

Attitudes Are Shifting

WHILE the Morrison Government pushes ahead with a gas fired recovery from COVID-19 it is clear that the attitudes of Australian’s is changing when it comes to climate change.

The annual Lowy Institute Poll on Australian attitudes to climate change has been released.

Among a series of

interesting findings, one thing is clear: support for climate action and renewable energy continues to grow.

The Lowy Institute Poll has found that seven in ten Australians want the government to take more action on climate, and believe that Australia should join other countries, such as the US and the UK, in increasing commitments to address climate change.

Alisha Onslow of Climate Action Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “The government cannot ignore these results. “The people of Australia are sick and tired of the political games being played around the issue of climate change.

“Climate change is the greatest existential crisis humanity has ever faced and we are running out of time to reverse the damage and limit the impacts.

No space for weeds in Port Stephens PORT Stephens is known for its incredible natural beauty and to keep it that way, Port Stephens Council is raising awareness about protecting the local environment from weeds.

Natural Resources team leader Jordan Skinner says there’s no space for weeds in Port Stephens.

“The ‘No Space for Weeds’ campaign is all about raising awareness of the significant impact that weeds can have on our environment, our native flora and fauna, and our farmers.

“Many of the things that make Port Stephens so special

— our incredible waterways, native bushland and unique koalas — are all at risk from the impact of weeds.

“Thanks to the NSW Department of Primary Industries, we’ve localised the ‘No Space for Weeds’ campaign to help Port Stephens residents understand the impact of weeds on our environment.

“We’re asking people to be on the lookout for weeds and to learn how to manage them on your property. Head to portstephens.nsw.gov.au/ weeds to find out more about our priority weeds in Port Stephens and how you can

help.”

Mr Skinner says Council is currently on high alert for a new weed in the west of Port Stephens called Sticky nightshade or Solanum sisymbriifolium.

“This is an invasive species native to South America with the potential to compete with crops and pasture in farmland.

It has sharp prickles that can injure people, pets, livestock and native animals.

“Sticky nightshade seeds are easily spread by birds, foxes and water but it can also spread by moving contaminated soil and earth moving equipment.

Stockton residents are seeing first hand how past landfill can cause huge problems due to the erosion of Stockton Beach.

Now this community is to be among the first in Newcastle to revolutionise household waste under a Council composting program.

Under the program households within the Newcastle LGA are being given the opportunity to take up home composting and reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill.

Participating residents will be offered a 75% discount off the recommended retail price as well as free shipping of selected composting, worm farming and bokashi fermenting products.

Woodworkers Supporting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

WOODWORKERS of Port Stephens came out to support the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. The official date this year for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea was Thursday, 27 May 2021 and Port Stephens Community Woodworkers decided to get together to support this fundraising event for the Cancer Council.

Roger Delaney, President of the Club told News Of The Area, “Our members decided they would like to stage a morning tea following the passing of two of our members from cancer this year.

“We have several other members who have had brushes with cancer and everyone in the club would

have experienced cancer, in some way, through friends and relatives, so this was a great opportunity to give back.”

The morning tea was held in a Covid-safe environment, in the workshop behind the Community Arts Centre and was well attended with over 60 people present, including members, friends, relatives and members of the public.

Kate Washington MP attended along with Carolyn Virgona, President of the Community Arts Centre and Ken White, Presenter on PSFM radio.

A sumptuous morning tea was prepared by members, who really got behind the event.

There were woodwork items for sale in support of the fund raising and items

made by members were on display. Also on display was a carved chess table and chess pieces comprising Australian animals.

The chess table and pieces are a big project for the club and it is still very much a work in progress.

The chess set will be raffled to raise funds for the club and tickets are now available from the Workshop.

The lucky door prize, a chopping board, was won

by Clyne Bridgeman and presented by Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington.

The successful morning tea raised over $600 from entry fees, wood sales and donations.

Bingo Industries also offered to match all online donations received on the day by the Cancer Council up to a total of $25,000!

YPT Launches 2022 Season

Young People’s Theatre are excited to present a fantastic range of shows for the 2022 season.

Students from all across Newcastle and the Port

Stephens’ region travel to the Young People’s Theatre to be part of a community which houses almost 400 students weekly, and six productions a year for students eight and up.

This 2022 season will include two plays and four musicals, with only one abridged version of a show.

These shows will be Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare), The Spongebob Musical (straight from Broadway to the first

Newcastle production), Stuart Little, The Aristocats Kids, Tuck Everlasting, and one secret show to be announced in 2022.

There are myriad ways to ring in the weekend, but unless you are tuning into Gardening Australia with a vino in hand, you are probably doing it the wrong way. Is there anything more life affirming and relaxing than learning about nature with a group of can-do folk from the comfort of your couch – or bed? Not really.

Anchored by Costa Georgiadis, this long-running series is a lesson in finding joy and purpose with nature, and it’s all very laidback. Tonight, Costa meets city gardeners who are utilising the street.

Handsome and oozing charisma, Rob Lowe leads the cast of this ostentatious and cheesy procedural disaster drama. Arguably one of the most underrated actors of his generation, many will find it difficult to forget his goofball role on cult satire Parks and Recreation, but his turn here as Owen, a perfectionist Manhattan firefighter relocated to Texas, is unique and entertaining – often accidentally. Season two kicks off tonight, with the coronavirus pandemic embedded into the narrative.

But a global health crisis still has nothing on the series’ overthe-top emergencies.

Sadly, female lead Liv Tyler doesn’t return, but excitement awaits with a 9-1-1 crossover in two weeks.

World Ocean Day

WORLD Oceans Day is upon us and coastal communities that are as linked to the oceans as ours are, are at the coal face of the need to make change.

We see erosion due to

extreme weather events.

We see the terrible toll on our environment created by shipping containers that are lost at sea, and we see plastics in the gullets of our birds, and the stomachs of turtles and other sea life.

We are also privileged to

see whales on their migration north, dolphins in the Bay and underwater we have seahorses, nudibranch, fields of seagrasses and sea life protected within the Great Lakes Port Stephens Marine Park.

One local organisation that is working hard to change the impact of plastic on our

oceans is Plastic Free Port Stephens.

Alicia Cameron of Plastic Free Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “World Oceans Day is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on how much our actions impact our oceans.

“Plastic is a significant threat to marine life and we can all do our bit to reduce its

likelihood of ending up in the ocean.”

The terrible effects of plastics in our waterways can be combated, simple actions by individuals like participating in regular clean ups and disposing of rubbish properly and recycling where possible can make a very real difference.

“Young people will inherit the repercussions of this generation’s attitude to waste, so it is on all of us to make conscious decisions when it comes to single-use plastic.

“PFPS were recently part of Councils Youth Week event and are looking to create a youth board in the near future,” she said.

Recycling More With Terracycle

TERRACYCLE Bins are now at Salamander Bay Recycling.

The placement of the Terracycle Boxes at the centre is a joint initiative between Salamander Bay Recycling and Plastic Free Port Stephens.

At the moment the centre hosts a range of boxes where you can recycle specific items such as latex gloves, surgical face masks, PPE, fabric, single use plastic bags and even makeup and beauty product packaging and there’s a special box for Colgate packaging.

The boxes are part of the worldwide Terracycle program and some of the boxes, like the Colgate one,

are sponsored by brands and businesses.

Terracycle collects postconsumer waste from your key target consumers.

Alicia Cameron of Plastic Free Port Stephens explained that much of the recycled packaging collected goes back into creating more packaging, removing the need for more raw materials.

Plastic Free Port Stephens consulted with the community to determine which Terracycle Bins were most needed and hopes to see venues in other parts of the LGA host the Terracycle boxes.

and drop in the box.

Alicia Cameron told News Of The Area, “Recycling is part of that circular economy, rather than just throwing it out, support the technology of being able to recycle these types of things.”

She is also hoping for industry groups to get together to collect and use the boxes, for example dentists who use multiple gloves per patient.

Businesses that use a lot of PPE could also get on board and become a part of the program that removes these items from landfill.

Providing the Terracycle boxes comes at a cost for Plastic Free Port Stephens.

“Ultimately we’d like to get industry together to share the cost of a box,” she said.

Green Battery Tech At Tomago

CLEAN Energy is something we are all striving towards.

One business that is investing in the technology will be building an Australian lithium-ion battery factory in Tomago, NSW. The business is anticipated to create 720 jobs in the region.

The A$1.46 million BMS

project is jointly funded and developed by Energy Renaissance with Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO and the Innovative Manufacturing CRC (IMCRC).

The BMS will monitor and report on the battery’s usage, lifespan and faults through a mobile network to Energy Renaissance and their customers.

Communicating through

an inverter, the system will enable secure real time data, analytics and remote management to drive down the risk of battery failure and operating costs for grid-scale energy storage users.

“This project is a great example of how local industry and research organisations can work together to turn an innovative idea into a high-value product that strengthens Australia’s competitive advantage and secures greater investment and market share.”

Energy Renaissance’s 4,500 sqm purpose-built facility in Tomago, NSW will manufacture Australian made batteries that are safe, secure, affordable and optimised to perform in hot climates.

These batteries will power stationary (grid and microgrid, renewables, community storage, mining electrification, Defence SilentWatch applications) and transport (buses, light commercial and industrial vehicles) applications.

Changed traffic conditions on Hinton Bridge

MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions from this week on Hinton Road at Hinton to carry out essential maintenance work on Hinton Bridge over the Paterson River.

Transport for NSW will carry out maintenance work, including repainting the bridge, which started on Wednesday 2 June.

Work will be carried out from 7am to 5pm on weekdays and is expected to be complete in up to 12 weeks, weather permitting.

Temporary traffic signals and traffic barriers will be in place while work is carried out and the signals will operate outside of work hours, with traffic control in place during work hours for the safety of workers and motorists.

The bridge will continue to operate while work is carried out with a single lane, alternate flow, and intermittent closures of up to 15 minutes. Motorists may experience short delays at times when the bridge is operating under traffic control.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.

WINTER can be the forgotten season of gardening. North of the equator in snowy climes, it really is a quiet season where gardens and gardeners enjoy rest. But not here! Sure it can becold, but there’s lots to gain from winter gardening. Apart from the beauty, maintenance work will set the stage for a glorious Spring. Start with checking soil health and pruning, not only to get rid of dead stalks/branches, but to see what spaces you might have to fill with winter plants. There are plenty of flowering plants to brighten dull skies. Natives such as grevilleas, wattles, native fuchsias and banksias are terrific. You can’t go wrong with camelias and lavender; lily of the valley and daphne. Come August, jasmines and flowering peach look stunning and the aroma of jasmine…..intoxicating. And don’t forget vegetable plots. Spinach, snap and snow peas, broccolini, garlic and herbs rosemary, thyme and parsley are some of the many that not only flourish in winter; they deliver a bounty for your table and there’s undeniable joy and satisfaction from growing your own. The Positive Behaviour and Learning (PBL) programme promotes core values like honesty.

This week Alex Tomlinson of Medowie Public School demonstrated honesty and has been recognised for handing

in a wallet which he found.

Simple shared values are the core of community, and the PBL programme helps to develop those core values in the youth of the nine schools which participate in the programme.

At face value, I can see your point. You have given the clothes to your friend out of the goodness of your heart, and you would expect that little Timmy would be happy to receive the Ninja Turtle singlet and Samantha would be thrilled with those faux leather boots, but alas they are now there for the world to see, along with a catchy sales pitch: 'Vintage singlet and vegan boots in great used condition' which is certainly not the description you would have given them.

The thing is, Elizabeth, there is actually zero monetary advantage in selling second-hand clothes to social media communities. I tell you, those people are savvier than any nanna at a Garage Sale. They are as cunning as Victor Lustig (Google him). As relentless as rodents. As tight as a fish's . . . you get the idea.

I discovered this the hard way when I tried to sell my seven-year-old son's soccer boots. They were in immaculate condition because, let's be honest, he spent half the season on the bench and even when on the field he wasn't too keen on getting his boots scuffed. They cost me $100, so I put them on the local marketplace site for $10, complete with photos from various angles and a detailed sizing chart with European conversions. That probably took me about half an hour, so I was already on slave-labour rates.

Well, then the queries started.

Would I accept $5? Ah, no. Would I drive the boots to the purchaser who lived half an hour away?

Nope. Would I arrange for free postage (which would be more than the asking price)? Negative. Would I take some more pictures including one of the shoe next to a ruler? Nein, du nerviger Dummkopf. Trying to sell that one pair of soccer boots became a fulltime job. I had to take annual leave to keep up with the enquiries.

I never sold those boots, Elizabeth. They are still in the wardrobe. My son is now sixteen and playing rugby. His feet have grown another ten centimetres.

The boots are still listed on the site, waiting patiently for someone to pay me a measly ten bucks so I can put it towards the therapy surrounding my lacklustre sales career.

So, the point is, let your friend try to sell those items. She will be burdened by the tactics of people who do this for a living. They grind you down until you end up offering to pay them just so they'll shut up and take the goods off your hands.

Waterfront work begins at Tanilba Bay

Fern Bay beats Tea Gardens in Palm Lake Resort annual Bowling Challenge THE annual Bowls Challenge between Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens and Fern Bay was held at Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens on Sunday 6 June 2021.

The two over 55’s resorts have competed for this shield for five years.

While Tea Gardens has held it for the longest consecutive number of months on record – 20, they were narrowly beaten on the day 145 -123 Both teams duelled hard on the eight lane course, with loud encouragement by the large team of supporters for each side.

After bowls lunch and beverages were enjoyed by all.

A return match is planned around September 2021.
