RESIDENTS of Raymond Avenue in Salamander Bay have expressed concern for their safety following two car fires in the early hours of 30 December.

One local, who asked to remain anonymous, told News Of The Area that the cars were well alight around 3.30am in the driveway of a home on the corner of Ford Street.

He described the scene as looking like the result of a firebombing.

“We were stressed by this and remain anxious as to our safety,” he said.

Port Stephens marine rescuers and police respond to a mayday and capsize

Shoal Bay capsize Three men were rescued after their vessel capsized off Port Stephens on New Year's Day. About 5.05am, police were called to an area of water near Shoal Bay. Officers attached to Marine Area Command located three men, aged 42, 43 and 57, who had climbed onto the hull of the capsized vessel to notify emergency services.

Police were told that the vessel had encountered large waves while crossing the bar off Tomaree Headland.

The men were taken to Shoal Bay where they were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for mild hypothermia. No other injuries were reported.

The vessel was towed, and NSW Maritime was notified of the incident.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene with a spokesperson confirming to NOTA that the fires are being treated as suspicious.

NSW Police have been contacted for more information, including confirmation as to how the fires started.

148 cancer transport volunteers drive 686,400 kms

TOMAREE Prostate Cancer Support Group and Nelson Bay Cancer Patient Transport Group recently came together for their combined 2025 Annual General Meeting, held at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

The two community groups, established in 2012 and 2014 respectively, work closely to support local residents affected by cancer.

Driver Co-ordinator John Every, who has held the role since the transport group was formed, presented statistics covering the period from January 2014.

“321 patients have been transported to Newcastle and other destinations,” he said.

Over this time a total of 148 volunteer drivers have contributed, completing 6,158 trips and covering 686,400 kilometres.

Seven long-serving drivers have collectively driven 47,000 kilometres since the group’s inception.

The groups expressed their appreciation to their

volunteers and community.

“Many thanks go to the volunteer drivers and the generous support from the local community, patients and their families,” a spokesperson for the groups said.

The spokesperson

Legal help for fire-affected residents LEGAL Aid NSW is urging anyone impacted by the recent bushfires in the Central Coast, Mid North Coast, Upper Hunter and Central West NSW to seek free legal help early.

The Legal Aid NSW Disaster Response Legal Service (DRLS) can advise people about issues relating

appointments, easing practical and emotional pressures during treatment.

about eligibility for disaster grants or payments, and we support people negotiating with employers if their work is affected.”

The Executive Director of Civil Law at Legal Aid NSW, Meredith Osborne, said timely legal help after a disaster can avoid many flow-on social issues, like homelessness, financial hardship and unemployment.

“We know that access to timely legal advice before, during and after a disaster can prevent legal problems from escalating. “If left unresolved, these problems can cause acute hardship, prolong recovery, and exacerbate trauma and disadvantage.

“That is why it is crucial that legal help is part of the frontline response to disasters,” she said.

NSW State Forests are open for free, pet‑friendly camping from the coast to the high country.

There are almost 500 State Forests and many offer camping facilities where dogs, under their owner’s control, are welcome. Campfires are also permitted, outside of fire bans.

“State Forests are a fabulous resource for the community,” Manager Tourism and Partnerships Louise Faulkner said.

“They are free to use, and offer an array of facilities and ‘back to nature’ camping.

Meanings and memories: gifts that mattered

CHRISTMAS may be over for another year but as several wise locals can attest, some gifts and memories will bring joy for a lifetime.

For Valda Wright, for instance, “Teddy” was never just a toy.

He was a miracle.

Growing up in the difficult years after the war, money was tight and gifts were practical rather than wished for.

A teddy bear was a luxury, until the Christmas her mother quietly made it happen.

After scrimping and saving, and paying it off through Grace Bros, Valda’s mother presented her with the bear she had admired for so long.

“I remember opening the box and being in absolute awe,” Valda recalls.

“He was mine, not a hand-me-down.”

Teddy became her constant companion, dressed in doll clothes lovingly sewn by her mother.

He went everywhere with her, heard her secrets, comforted her through tears and joy, and silently witnessed every chapter of her life.

He watched her children grow from a shelf, travelled with her through homes and life changes, and still sits nearby today.

Worn with age but carefully dressed, Teddy remains Valda’s trusted confidant.

“He brings me peace,” she says.

“Best money my mother ever spent.”

Man’s best toy friend Andrew Archer can’t remember a Christmas without “Goggie”.

The soft, well-loved Pluto dog has been part of his life for as long as his memory reaches back, quietly accompanying his childhood without fanfare or a clearly remembered moment of arrival.

“I’m not even sure who gave it to me,” Andrew says, “it’s just always been there.”

Years later, when Andrew moved into his first home, his mother returned Goggie to him, recognising its place in the story of his life.

Since then, the treasured toy has been carefully kept, a tangible link to simpler days.

Goggie holds special significance beyond comfort and nostalgia.

It appears in one of the only baby photos Andrew has with his brother, capturing a moment of early connection and the beginnings of their brotherly bond.

At Christmas, Goggie stirred memories of childhood, family and togetherness.

“It takes me right back,” Andrew says.

“It reminds me of being a kid, of my brother and of where it all started.”

Janey the doll Linda Jury was just four years old when her grandmother gave her a doll she named Janey, a Christmas gift that would remain part of her life and a playful companion for more than six decades.

Janey was no ordinary doll.

She said “Mama” when rocked and could walk when Linda held her hand.

From the moment she was unwrapped, Linda was enchanted.

“Even at that age, I remember how excited I was,” she says.

As Linda grew older, Janey moved with her from house to house, a constant presence through changing chapters of life.

She became more than a toy, she was a companion, a comfort and a reminder of Linda’s close bond with her Nan and the Christmases they shared.

Time took its toll, and eventually Janey became worn.

Three years ago, with a heavy heart, Linda donated her to a charity store.

Though no longer physically present, Janey remains deeply cherished.

“She’ll always remind me of my Nan,” Linda says, “and of the love wrapped up in that Christmas gift.”

The music box Ann Field’s treasured Christmas memory begins at a festive party at the Punchbowl RSL Club, a place tied closely to her family’s history.

Her father had served in World War II, and the club was a familiar setting for celebration and remembrance.

That Christmas, Ann received a delicate music box with a twirling ballerina inside.

As the music played and the dancer spun, something magical was set in motion.

“It sparked a lifelong love of decorative boxes,” Ann says.

Decades later, the music box still plays its tune, though time has left its mark.

The ballerina no longer twirls as she once did, however the charm remains intact.

The box stands as a reminder of childhood wonder, of family gatherings, and of the moment a simple gift became the beginning of a lifelong passion.

The encyclopaedias that travelled the world Morag Maskell’s most treasured Christmas gift didn’t sparkle or sing; it educated, inspired and endured.

Her Odhams Young People’s Encyclopaedia set, four blue hard-covered books with gold lettering and a matching dictionary, became a cornerstone of her childhood.

Her father made the gift even more special by building a shelf from a wooden orange box just for the books.

They were well used during her school years and remained in her bedroom in the family home in Scotland as she grew older.

When her parents passed away, Morag ensured the encyclopaedias stayed with her, shipping them all the way to Australia.

Today, they sit proudly in her bookcase, rich with memory.

“They’re a real treasure from my childhood,” she says.

THE NSW Government has completed its first comprehensive statewide koala survey.

It says it provides the most accurate picture to date of where koalas live and how populations are distributed across the state.

Using new tools such as heat-detecting drones and acoustic recorders, scientists surveyed more than 1,000 locations across national parks, state forests and private land.

The government says the updated estimate of 274,000 koalas reflects “improved technology and more extensive survey work”.

Previous estimates of NSW’s koala populations were conducted through more

traditional survey methods such as visual sightings and scat analysis.

The NSW population estimate is in line with the recently released National Koala Monitoring Program, led by the Australian Government in partnership with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Penny Sharpe said, “This survey gives us a clearer understanding of where koalas remain in NSW. “It is an important tool to guide conservation decisions.

“The Minns Labor Government has a strong record on koala conservation, and this survey shows we have been making the right decisions to ensure their survival.”

Without meaning to sound glib, the best kind of exercise is the type you can stick to.

There's no point embarking on some kind of Hunger Games quest for fitness if you are just dipping your toe into the idea.

This brings me to my first suggestion: aqua aerobics or some

form of water activity.

Water sports are fantastic because they are low impact and you won't put stress on your joints.

Not only will water exercise improve your fitness, but you'll probably expand your circle of friends (quite literally during the pool noodle circular jog).

An alternative (if you live near the coast) is to wade waist deep in the ocean or at the ocean baths.

It's great resistance training, particularly if you wade into a determined freestyler (those capped Boomers doing their laps stop for no one).

Do you enjoy dancing? I don't mean Flamenco or Salsa dancing, but jiggling around in your jammies.

If you combine daily chores with Diana Ross's Upside Down blasting through your headphones, you'll be getting a double dose of activity, hip swivelling and booty popping your way to fitness (just don't pop too hard initially, Evie, or you may end up in a back brace).

How about spinning? I don't mean on a shared path, where you're likely to be bowled over by a Golden Retriever or a 10-yearold whose parents were moronic

enough to gaift them an electric bike for Christmas, but in a spin room at a local gym. This will burn a mountain of calories, and with the bike firmly attached to the floor, you will be safe from hazards (except perhaps Phil's sweaty towel when he flicks it following a two-minute uphill climb).

Finally, Evie, in your midfifties, you should incorporate some sort of strength training.

If you don't want to be the person struggling to get out of a chair, now is the time to build up a bit of muscle. There are loads of free instructional videos online, or if you'd like the encouragement of others, you could join a small group training class or enlist the help of friends (I'm sure they'd love the benefits of exercise too). Just make sure you let your doctor know what you are about to embark on so he can give you the all-clear.

I know that the most popular form of defense in court these days is to claim mental impairment, when charged with these cowardly and irrational offenses.

Has our society degraded to such an extent that these excuses are being used as a defense for the crime

of attacking life saving assistance provided by these professionals.

It is simply outside my ability to understand their rationale.

I’m sure you can’t legislate to prevent this appalling situation from happening, but our society needs to have a firm reaction to these offenders who commit such disgusting crimes in the hope that we can stamp out the madness of such an event

Rather than going over the trials and tribulations of last year, I prefer to look ahead with renewed vigour in order to see what our society can do better, in order to make improvements to our way of life.

The area that offends me greatly, and needs to be corrected immediately, is the reported treatment of first responders by some elements of society.

At present, it is Victorian-based paramedics who are pointing out how they are treated by some members of the public when attending to provide often life saving actions on people

experiencing difficulty in public locations.

Their reports include being attacked, bashed, spat upon and physically abused when trying to respond to life threatening events to ordinary citizens who desperately need their expertise in order to survive.

These issues are not just Victorian happenings, as Ambulance and Paramedic officers regularly report these extremes in every state of Australia.

The reality is that someone views an event, an accident, a drug related issue late at night, or even a heart attack on the street or in a shopping centre, then immediately phones

Upgraded Sensory Trail unveiled THE Hunter Wetlands Centre has officially opened the first stage of its upgraded Sensory Trail after a year-long restoration program supported by local students, volunteers and community groups.

The restoration project was funded by the Australian Government and Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group.

It formed part of an Environmental Stewardship Program involving students from Trinity Catholic College, who worked alongside Hunter Wetlands Centre staff, the Jesmond Lions Club and the Australian Plant Society.

Students were involved in design decisions as well as the regeneration work.

As part of the program they also learned about native plant propagation, wetland ecology, bush tucker and local wildlife.

The initiative gave students hands-on experience in conservation, and environmental education while supporting major restoration projects at the Centre.

“It was a pleasure working with the students from Trinity Catholic College. They did a fantastic job,” said Michele Keith, Director Hunter Wetlands Centre.

Stinker’s History: the fate of the Italia Star

IT WAS in the early evening of Sunday March 15 1959, that a cyclone had built a huge sea with crashing surf and whitewater breaking across the entrance to Port Stephens.

The sea was rolling into the Port as far as Corlette.

Conditions on the water were extremely hazardous.

Sydney based, Italian owned trawlers had been lying up out of the gale in Seal Rocks waiting for the sea to abate. The swell continued to rise, forcing the boats out of cover into the deeper water.

The trawlers headed south and the decision was made to enter the safety of Port Stephens.

One, the “Porpoise”, originally owned by Joe Arblaster, made it through the dangerous break at the entrance into the relatively calm water of the Port.

The 56 foot “Italia Star” followed and unfortunately a huge wave swamped the boat

q and the following wave rolled her over.

The sole survivor, Carmelo Musumeci, 23, was rescued by a police launch after swimming for almost a mile.

His two crewmates were never found despite extensive air, sea and land searches.

To no avail, locals Les Yabsley and Bob Saddler shone a blazing spotlight throughout the night, into the boiling water off the deck of the “Viking”.

The third boat in the fleet, the “San Fransisco”, stayed out in the deep water.

Wisely she would not approach

the port and headed for Sydney, arriving three days later.

Following the tragedy, local fishermen Teddy McLeay and “Bubby” Monin took about and attached ropes to the “Italia Star” and salvaged her.

The trawler was repaired on George Kennedy’s slip at Little Beach.

Stinker’s Fishin’: giant snapper

EVERYONE I know wants to catch a snapper – a big one - to take a photograph to stick on the fridge for years to come.

If it is a big snapper you are chasing, you have come to the right spot.

Monsters in excess of 10kg are cruising through the perfect habitat that the underwater country off the coast of Port Stephens (and the Myall Coast) provides.

The reefs from Birubi to Broughton and further north to Seal Rocks are alive with cracker snapper.

Huge snapper play differently to smaller fish in that they hit like a steam train – no pick, pick, picking.

It is full on attack, the rod flattens and the reel screams.

If you are not prepared to be smashed there is a big chance that you will lose the fight before it begins.

Here are the “rules” to catch a monster snapper: - Preferred line size around 20-30 lb, tied to a hook 6/0-8/0. I use a strong swivel to prevent any line twist. It is vital to set the drag on your reel to the correct tension. Not too tight but loose enough to let the fish run.

- The best bait is a slimy mackerel, filleted and pinned with the hook at one end. Yellowtail filleted or cubed, a big prawn, fresh squid or a whole pilchard.

- A rich, steady berley stream set up over time will increase your chances. Once the berley trail has attracted attention, toss your unweighted bait, with the wind at your back, as far from the boat as possible. Place your rod in the holder and let the bait slowly sink. Once hooked, the big fish will head off at an amazing speed, testing your equipment and knots to the limit.

This is an instant of great excitement which must be controlled.

- Remove the rod from the holder and let the fish swim without you winding the reel. When it slows, start making ground by retrieving. Stay cool, calm and collected as the reel continues to squeal. A big snapper has 3-5 power runs when you just hope that nothing snaps. The first two runs are the most intense.

- Steady, steady as the runs become less

On the path to success

TOMAREE High School’s Class of 2025 is already on the path to success.

Among the graduates at the school’s Year 12 catch-up breakfast on 18 December, were students who had been offered apprenticeships and traineeships or early entry into university programs.

“This [was] another highly successful year, and I am extremely proud - along with our dedicated teachers and staff - of everything our students have accomplished,” Principal Paul Baxter said.

“Students have been supported by a strong and caring community, encouraging every pathway

beyond school.”

A significant number of students have been offered early entry into degrees including Aerospace Systems Engineering, Clinical Exercise Physiology, Law, Nursing, Mechanical Engineering, Science, Creative Arts, Tourism, Communications, Occupational Therapy, Biomedical Science, Criminology and Pharmaceutical Medicine.

Those who have secured apprenticeships and traineeships will work across a range of industries.

Tomaree High School offers a balanced approach to education, with a strong focus on wellbeing, frameworks for academic success, and opportunities across sport and the creative arts.

THE region’s producers are being urged to report any sign of pasture dieback this Summer to the Department of Primary Industries, following detections in the North Coast and Hunter.

Pasture dieback is a destructive condition that targets summer-growing grasses such as kikuyu, paspalum, buffel grass and sabi grass.

Pasture dieback typically begins as small patches but can rapidly expand, devastating pastures and paving the way for invasive broadleaf weeds to take hold.

It is not limited by landscape or soil type.

NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSW DPIRD) Pastures Development Officer Sarah Baker, said early detection and reporting are key to managing its spread and protecting valuable grazing land.

“Pasture dieback has been found in Northern NSW, with new detections in the Hunter Valley and Werris Creek earlier this year,” Ms Baker said.

“It’s important to be monitoring pastures for anything unusual, for example pastures not responding as expected to recent rainfall.

“Keep an eye out for unhealthy plants with red, yellow and/or

Farmers urged to report pasture dieback purple discoloured leaves surrounding patches of dead grasses.

“Reporting suspected pasture dieback is critical to help us understand the spread and impact of this condition.

“Early detection allows us to monitor affected areas, support landholders with management strategies, and coordinate research efforts to find long-term solutions.

“The more information

we have, the better we can respond and protect our pasture systems now and into the future.”

The presence of pasture mealybug (Heliococcus summervillei) is associated with this condition.

Mealybugs are white and only a few millimetres in size.

Their populations are at their highest in autumm.

Ms Baker said a number of diseases and pests can look similar to dieback, such as,

kikuyu yellows, armyworm, nutrient deficiencies and herbicide damage, which can all negatively impact pastures.

“Producers can continue to maintain production with broadleaf species, including legumes, chicory and brassicas, which are not affected by dieback.

“Re-sowing perennial summer-growing grasses, like kikuyu, into diebackaffected areas is not

recommended.”

Not all unhealthy grass is a result of pasture dieback, which is why landholders are advised to contact Local Land Services (LLS) on 1300 795 299 for advice and support.

Producers can also report pasture dieback through the Exotic Plant Pest hotline on 1800 084 881, via email to biosecurity@dpi.nsw.gov. au with a clear photo and contact details, or complete the online reporting form.

Embrace People and Place Chief Executive Officer Coralie Nichols said, “The Women in Community program is about giving women leaving prison the support they need to return to community life with dignity and confidence.

“By providing safe accommodation,

employment pathways and wraparound support, we’re helping women make positive choices and build the lives they want for themselves.”

Work has already begun to prepare eligible women for the program, with the first cohort to be housed at the facility this year.

The site was a former Periodic Detention Centre aimed at re-skilling minimum-security inmates before being refurbished by Corrective Services NSW.

Pythons crush Journeymen in Division One cricket runfest

By Chris KARAS PORT Stephens Pythons have zoomed back into Newcastle District Cricket Division One premiership calculations on the back of a thumping festive season one day victory over Journeymen Wests.

The rejuvenated Pythons entered the Christmas-New Year break on a positive note after posting an emphatic 168run triumph over their rivals at Jesmond Park.

Dashing half centuries from opening batsmen Leigh Williams and Jarryd Johnson and club legend Jarrod Moxey set up the mammoth win.

Paceman Harry Kean, Matthew Dean and Jason Eveleigh combined to skittle the Journeymen and secure valuable competition points.

Williams top scored with a blazing 88 off only sixty nine balls - cracking half a dozen sixes and eight boundaries during his whirlwind knock with Johnson just as impressive while smashing a power laden 54 off sixty five balls.

The talented duo combined for a rollicking opening stand of 154 as the Pythons, batting first, registered an imposing

tally of 8-290 off their 40 overs.

Vice captain Jarrod Moxey produced a vintage knock of 55 off forty deliveries that featured three towering sixes and six boundaries with sibling Josh Moxey (22) and Travis Ling (30 not out) also contributing to the run feast.

Spearhead Kean looked sharp during his four wicket haul (4-46 off eight overs) while Dean (3-19 off thirtyone deliveries) and Jason Eveleigh (2-20 off seven) helped dismantle the Wests side for 122 inside thirty overs.

Journeymen opener Dion Sandoz (26), number five Dylan Barnes (23) and skipper Paul Gauci (19) tried hard to lift the home side with gritty knocks but to no avail.

The victory keeps the Port Stephens X1 in fifth spot after eleven rounds on 22 points and in the hunt for a top four finals berth - within striking distance of competition pacesetters Merewether (28 points), Waterboard Wests and Maryland Fletcher (24 points and Cardiff-Boolaroo (23 points).

Osborne-Zorbas signs with Warringah Rats

OUTSTANDING Port Stephens rugby half back prospect Bastiaan OsborneZorbas is bound for Sydney.

The 18-year-old Nelson Bay Gropers junior will play for the Warringah club this season in the NSW Rugby Under 20s Shute Shield Colts competition after impressing talent scouts.

The number nine, Osborne-Zorbas turned in classy performances for the Hunter Wildfires junior representative squad last season and Nelson Bay club in the Hunter Junior Rugby Under 18s competition.

Zorbas, who recently completed his Higher School Certificate at Tomaree High School, has acquired a job on the Newport Marina slipway

and will turn out for the Rats during the 2026 season.

He will be joined in the Colts ranks by his Nelson Bay Gropers team-mate Liam Pietraszak, 18, who has linked with the West Harbour club.

Zorbas starred for the triumphant Wildfires team that lifted the NSW Country Junior Championship trophy and finished runners up to Randwick at the 2025 State Junior Rugby Championships at Concord.

He was identified as an “exciting talent” by Warringah’s Colts Coordinator Luke Wilson and jumped at the opportunity to play for the Rats in the Sydney-based Under 20s Shute Shield competition.

Zorbas showed early potential with the Nelson Bay Juniors from Under 8s

to Under 13s as a dashing fullback and five-eighth before spending two seasons with the Southern Beaches club in the Hunter Junior Rugby series.

He attended Hunter Sports High School from Year 7 to Year 9 before playing a season of soccer with Nelson Bay FC as a talented midfielder in the Under 16s competition.

That twelve month soccer

stint shaped Bastiaan’s rugby career with the mercurial half back stamping his mark these past two seasons in the 15 per side code.

Zorbas was instrumental in the Gropers’ capturing the Hunter Junior Rugby Under 18s premiership during 2024 and has just returned with last year’s squad from a seven day tour of Vanuatu.

chance to take the reins of the Gropers’ men's squad after club legend Zion Takarua stepped down to focus on his playing commitments.

After seven seasons with the Pirates, a rejuvenated Michael returned to Port Stephens in 2025 to coach the Nelson Bay Women’s Premier team before throwing his hat into the ring for the men’s head coach position.

Nelson Bay official Greg Spake told News Of The Area that the appointment of Squires was a “huge fillip” for the club.

“Michael brings a wealth

of experience with him as a player and coach and is highly regarded in the Port Stephens rugby community.”

Spake tips exciting times for the Gropers’ youthful first grade men's squad in 2026.

“He is a club legend who gave sterling service as a playmaker in the number ten jumper before turning his hand to coaching,” quipped the first grade team manager and club registrar.

Squires cut his coaching teeth with the Nelson Bay Colts in 2013 - a team that featured current men's first grade forward stars in flanker Sam Rocher and prop Nathan McLeay.

He later guided the Gropers’ Premier Two squad in the Hunter Suburban competition before relocating to the country town of Tamworth in the New England region for work.

Squires linked with the Tamworth Pirates and coached the club’s second grade outfit from 201819 - piloting the team to a Grand Final triumph before transitioning to Head Coach of the first grade squad for the 2021 and 2022 seasons where he enjoyed further success.

As a just reward for his captivating mentorship, Michael was appointed

coach of the Central North Kookaburras men's representative side that competed at the 2021 NSW Country Rugby Championships.

When the mens first grade coaching vacancy surfaced at Nelson Bay, club officials jumped at the chance to bring Michael on board - completing his full circle return to the Gropers men's squad.

A devoted Squires has hit the ground running.

He announced that pre season training will commence on Tuesday January 20 at Bill Strong Oval (Groperdome) at 6pm with regular sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Gropers will host their first trial match on Saturday March 7 at the Groperdome against the strong Manly Savers club who finished Grand Finalists in the 2025 Sydney Suburban competition.

Manly Savers president Tom Crerar is keen again to make the trip up to Port Stephens after his squad enjoyed their time in the Bay in 2025.

The Gropers are currently planning other trial fixtures in the build up to the Hunter Suburban Rugby season opener on April 11.

WHEN Nelson Bay Rugby Club were seeking an experienced mentor to take on the Head Coaching role for their men's Suburban team for the 2026 season, they didn’t have to look far.

In local product Michael Squires the Gropers had a ready-made candidate for the job - a former Nelson Bay fly half who achieved coaching success with the club’s Colts team and later Tamworth Pirates in the NSW Country Central North Division ranks.

Feldman siblings Olivia, Maggie and Harry born to lead

LEADERSHIP qualities are the common traits of gifted Anna Bay siblings Olivia, Maggie and Harry Feldman.

The trio hold a special place in Anna Bay Public School annals with all three students having etched their names on a distinguished honour roll of captains.

In a unique achievement, 12 year old Harry continued a proud Feldman family tradition last year while serving as the 2025 school captain.

A promising golfer at the Nelson Bay and Horizons Golf Clubs, Harry followed in the footsteps of his elder sisters Olivia, 18, and Maggie, 13.

Both sisters donned the school captain’s badge in their final years at the historic primary school in 2019 and

on ground in a 23-15 loss to premiers Newcastle City Blues in the title decider at the No 1 Sportsground.

The Nelson Bay girls pushed their more experienced Blues rivals all the way in a crackerjack contest with on-ball dynamo Olivia proving a tower of strength at centre half back.

Despite the Grand Final loss, the Marlins women can take solace as one of only two teams to defeat the champion Blues last season after recording a gallant 2826 victory over the premiers at Bateau Bay Oval in the lead into the finals.

Nelson Bay shaped as one of the sides to beat in 2026 with Olivia to continue her studies by commencing an Exercise & Sports Science degree at the University of Newcastle.

She will juggle her playing commitments and studies by working as a Game Development Officer with the AFL Hunter Central Coast organisation.

Her younger sister Maggie is a sporting ace in her own right and one of the emerging netball goalkeepers in the Port Stephens region.

Maggie has represented Nelson Bay at the State Junior Netball Age championships in recent years.

She took out the Umpires Player of the Grand Final award after performing strongly for her Storm team in the local Intermediate 13-14yrs trophy decider at Tomaree Sports Complex.

The tenacious defender was judged best on court after a wholehearted effort in the Storm’s 38-31 loss to the All Stars.

Maggie was later named in the Nelson Bay Under 14yrs representative squad to compete at the 2026 State Junior Netball titles in Sydney.

The Nelson Bay Tennis Club junior has been selected as a ballkid for the 2026 Australian Open after a highly competitive national selection process.

Josie was among more than 3,000 applicants from across Australia, with just 280 ballkids selected.

Her journey began with Level 1 trials in Wodonga, where she showcased her speed, focus and court

awareness.

She then progressed to Level 2 trials at Melbourne Park, successfully securing her place among the elite group.

Following her selection, Josie committed to an intensive training schedule, flying to Melbourne four times over the past couple of months to take part in official ballkid training sessions.

These sessions are designed to prepare participants for the fast pace and professionalism required

at a Grand Slam tournament.

Josie has also gained valuable experience being a ballkid at the Australian Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Melbourne, further developing her skills and confidence ahead of the Australian Open.

This month (January 2026) she will spend three weeks living in Melbourne as part of the Australian Open ballkid program.

First up is the Australian Open qualifying tournament

Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre before Christmas.

The Hunter Sports Academy student was one of nine Nelson Bay Swim Club mainstays to compete at the prestigious event - winning a gold medal in the Girls 15yrs 400m Individual Medley final in an impressive time of 5:07.79.

She also bagged a silver medal in the 200m butterfly final (2:23.81) and bronze in the 200m Individual Medley (2:24.48) to cap a memorable meet.

A multi-skilled athlete who also excels in soccer and hockey, Hanna showed her versatility in the pool by finishing fifth in the 50m

freestyle and 100m butterfly, sixth in the 100m freestyle and eighth in the 400m freestyle finals.

The Swimming NSW Sharks squad member will be chasing more medals and personal bests in the Tomaree pool later this week with her talented squad mates.

Other Nelson Bay club swimmers to leave their mark were rising 13 year old Rafe Grant of Corlette, who clocked personal best times to claim bronze medals in the Boys 13yrs 1500m (19:02.39) and 800m (10:10.35) freestyle finals.

Elder brother Stefan Grant finished sixth in the Boys 14yrs 200m butterfly final and ninth in the 400m Individual Medley final while Lara Budd registered top ten finishes in the Girls 15yrs

Young gun Lachlan Parker also produced strong swims to finish sixth in the Boys 15yrs 50m butterfly final and ninth in the 50m freestyle final to underline his potential.

Newcastle recruit Bonnie Norton, 16, along with Isabella Hol, 16, Alexis Scott, 14, and Beau Gardiner, 13 were rewarded for their hard work by posting improved times in their events.

Testimony of the squad’s all round depth were the combination of Mounter, Norton, Budd and Hol that competed in the Girls Under 15-18 yrs Medley Relay shaving three seconds off their entry time to qualify for this year’s National Age Swimming Championships.

Port Stephens Athletics Centre president Michelle Chan told News Of The Area that the young sprinters were part of the club’s exciting new breed.

“They show plenty of potential and work hard on all their disciplines and share a competitive edge that has kept them in good stead.

way,” Michelle added.

For their sterling efforts on the track and field, the Port Stephens foursome have qualified to compete at this year’s Region Two Athletics Championships to be held in Maitland from 13 to 15 February.

q Outstanding Port Stephens Athletics Centre juniors Leylah Standing, Joy Schneider, Malia Foster and Elayna Chesters snared a silver medal in the 9-12s Junior Girls 4 x 100m Relay.

MEET the Port Stephens Athletics Centre pocket rockets that secured a Junior Girls Relay silver medal at the Port-Hunter Zone Athletics Championships at Mallabula Sports Complex.

Eleven-year-old Leylah Standing, 10-year-olds Joy Schneider and Malia Foster, and nine-year-old whippet Elayna Chesters are four of the club’s brightest track and field prospects that have collected a bagful of medals in the Junior age categories.

They produced an encouraging performance in the Junior Girls 9-12s 4 x 100m Relay to snare silver with a blistering time of 1:08.52 seconds.
