IN our community there is a stalwart organisation; a not for profit that gives to other not for profits and supports actions within our community.

The Salamander Bay Recycling Centre is a shining example of a successful and self - sustaining community enterprise.

Every year residents deliver their unwanted goods to the centre which results in a staggering 2000 tonnes of recyclable material are diverted from landfill each year.

The centres volunteers and team members sort the goods, repair them andoffer them for sale in their shop, they also recycle scrap metal and batteries.

The man stole cash before fleeing on foot across Benjamin Lee Drive in a south westerly direction.

Officers from Port StephensHunter Police District were called and established a crime scene.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged between 16 and 20 years old and 170 to 175cm tall. He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie pulled over his head, black track pants, black slip on canvas shoes, yellow gloves and had his face covered. He was carrying a small black backpack.

Huge loss of wildlife in Fires

AUSTRALIA is reeling in the horror of the fires which are engulfing the country.

We are watching our nation burn in unprecedented bushfires and there is anger, shock and grief.

There is significant loss of human life and property.

The wildlife in some areas has been totally decimated.

The eyrie quiet here in much of Port Stephens and the Myall region and the smudge of smoke in the air fails to convey the magnitude of our losses as a nation.

We once had an ark for the Koala on Kangaroo Island now that ark is gone and so too is at least half of the one truly thriving population of koalas left in Australia.

The population on Kangaroo Island was growing at such a rate that at one point it was rumored the South Australian Government considered a cull which was rejected.

On Kangaroo Island 13,500 koalas have been sterilised or contracepted in what is considered to be one of the largest fertility control projects in the world.

There are reports of some 25,000 koalas dying in the Kangaroo Island fires.

The ability of the population to repopulate is dramatically reduced through the fertility control program.

This makes securing the koala population within our own Myall Coast and Port Stephens region even more important.

Local koalas are already under stress from loss of habitat, the drought, vehicle strikes and dog attacks.

Our koala carers are under the pump, caring

for not only koalas from our region but also for refugees from the fires.

What we need is definitive national and local action now to save this iconic species.

Everything we thought we knew about the survival of the koala has changed in the months since the fires began that engulf the nation.

Julie Jennings who is a carer volunteering for Port Stephens Koalas told News Of The Area, “Our koalas are so valuable to

The delegation also inspected the recently completed decommissioning shed which was specially designed to enable ongoing sorting of nonferrous materials.

Formerly known within the centre as “Area 51” the refurbished area is bigger safer and more user friendly for the staff and

volunteers.

“Importantly, the meeting was also the last hosted by the retiring Salamander Bay Recycling Chairman of the Board, Alan Cloke.

Alan joined the Board in 2008 and took up the Chairmanship in 2010.”

“After a decade in the role, Alan decide to step back a little but will remain as a valuable board member,” he said.

Port Stephens Council provide great support to the Recycling centre activities and this annual meeting gave the visitors the opportunity to see important infrastructure improvements underway.

“Council did street planting in quiet streets in areas like

“The population of the koala is now in a catastrophic situation,” she said.

Ian Morphett, Secretary of Myall Koala and Environment Group said, “All wildlife caring groups in our region such as Port Stephens Koalas, Hunter Wildlife and Taree Koalas in Care are almost overwhelmed by the number of koalas needing attention. Many of them are outside their areas because the local groups couldn’t handle the numbers.”

Mr Morphett said, “We will never know how many were actually killed by the fires because they were so hot there are often no remains to identify.

And, of course, it is not just the koalas.”

Port Stephens and Myall Region koalas are not safe from bushfires, dog attacks, vehicle strikes or further loss of environment.

Of course koalas are just one of the many species that the fires have decimated, they are one of the more visible and invoke emotive responses.

It is our actions and our responsibility to the land we walk on and the environment which we live in which will determine the future of the koala and other species after the fires.

Woman blows over four time limit A HUNTER woman has been charged with highrange drink-driving after returning a breath analysis more than four times the legal limit.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were on Richardson Road at Salt Ash about 9.30pm (Saturday 4 January 2020), when they saw a vehicle crashed into a drainage culvert.

The 29-year-old female driver was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where she underwent a breath analysis, returning an alleged reading of 0.213.

She was issued with a Court Attendance Notice (CAN) for high-range PCA and her driver’s licence was suspended.

She is due to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 20 January 2020.

AT times we all have a little extra love to give.

Fostering a pet is one way that you can share that love, without tying yourself down for the 10-20 years that the commitment of pet ownership can mean.

Hunter Animal Rescue needs foster carers here in Port Stephens.

At the recent foster carers training session which was held at PetQuarters at Taylors Beach potential foster carers learned about the types of pets that they may be asked

to foster while these animals await their forever home.

Caroline Hawkless Secretary of Hunter Animal Rescue told News Of The Area, “We like people to make an informed decision if they think fostering is something they would like to do.”

Hunter Animal Rescue conducted pet Santa Photos at Taylors Beach last over the Festive season and all profits from this event were donated

to Hunter Animal Rescue.

Hunter Animal Rescue currently has 20 dogs and 11 cats listed for adoption with other animals placed in homes on trial.

Fosters with Hunter Animal Rescue have described fostering as rewarding, challenging and life changing.

This means that the organisation currently needs at least 31 foster carers to look after these animals.

Foster carers who volunteer with Hunter Animal Rescue are truly making a difference and saving the lives of cats and dogs facing euthanasia within our community.

Tony Townsend told News of The Area, “The objective of this joint operation is to ensure community safety through an increased presence during this busy holiday period.”

“Increased officer presence will not only be visible on local streets, patrols will include public transport, camping grounds, waterways here and across to Nelson Bay and Stockton Beach,” said Inspector Townsend.

This annual initiative that takes months of planning by multiple agencies to achieve, is designed to mitigate anti-social behaviour and raise awareness of crime prevention measures especially when a large influx of people arrives here for their summer holidays.

Bushfire Response — Australian Defence Force Reserve Call Out For the first time in Australia’s history, Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reserve Brigades have received a Call-Out Order of Reservists: Operation BUSHFIRE ASSIST 2019-2020.

At the request of the Australian Government the Governor General, His Excellency General, (Retd), the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC has issued the Call Out Order.

The Call Out will see up to 3000 predominately Army Reservists deployed to help State Agencies throughout the fire affected areas. The majority of Reservists who have been called out come from the Australian Army’s 2nd Division, 4 Brigade, 5 Brigade, 6 Brigade, 9 Brigade, 17 Sustainment Brigade and the broader ADF Community.

With skills in professions including engineering, medical, logistics and transport, Reservists will support agencies in responding to the current bushfire emergency in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

The priority for those involved will be to assist in ensuring the safety of life, support the evacuation of affected people, provide assistance to communities and support State-managed evacuation centres.

Reservists currently supporting the fires are exempt from this Call Out. For more information about exemptions please visit www.defencereservessupport.gov.au

In fact, I’m not even sure I had parents for weeks on end. I guess they were there somewhere, but we were pretty much left to our own devices and I don’t think it did us any harm.

With so many people in absolutely dire situations due to the raging bushfires, I think bored kids are probably the least of our worries. Why don’t you get them to come up with a way to raise some money for the RFS, or have them make pouches for the animals that somehow made it through the devastation. Maybe you could get them to design a new advertising campaign for Scott Morrison, or they could write a letter to some of our firefighting volunteers to thank them for the tireless work they are doing to save homes and lives.

Boredom probably sounds pretty damn appealing to the people who are trying to rebuild after losing everything, Mrs KG. What do you think? We are lucky to be in Port Stephens at the moment when so much of the nation is burning.

By Heather SHARP LOCAL councillor, Freeman of Port Stephens, President of the Medowie Progress Association, President of the Medowie Community Centre committee, BHP Engineer, Scout Leader, Father, Husband, Son. This is just a selection of the roles and titles former Port Stephens Councillor Mr Geoff Dingle had over his lifetime.

Mr Dingle (born 1950) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June 2018.

Sadly, on New Year’s Eve Mr Dingle passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Mr Geoff Dingle’s achievements were far reaching and long lasting in his role as Local Councillor from 2004 to 2017.

Even after his retirement and during his illness, Mr Dingle remained active in the community commenting on local government matters and continuing his active participation in the Medowie Tidy Towns group.

His legacy will continue in the projects he supported and campaigned for which, amongst others include: establishing the Medowie off-leash dog park, the Medowie skate ramp, developing the Medowie Community Centre.

Mr Dingle lived in Medowie with his family for 40 years.

He joined the Scout group when he arrived having already been a Scout leader for a number of years.

He was a leader from the early 1980s until he successfully ran for the Port Stephens Council in 2004.

Unusually, Mr Dingle was successful in his first run for Council, elected to represent his community.

Mr Dingle, through numerous stoushes on Council, remained an advocate for his community not just of Medowie but also more broadly for all of Port Stephens.

News Of The Area spoke with his wife, Mrs Libby Dingle, to gain insight into Geoff as a family man and to reflect on the work he did within the community.

Mrs Dingle said, “So many people were happy to work with him.”

“He could attract people to work with him.”

“Many people remember him as a Councillor, but he has done so much in the community.”

It was through the Scouts that Mr Dingle became

involved in the Community Centre as the group met at the building.

He later became the President of the Hall Committee and advocated for Council to spend $1M developing the hall into the bigger centre it is now.

Being the community minded person that he was, and with his background in engineering, he ensured the build was overseen and took a personal interest in seeing the project through to completion.

Mr Dingle was also on the Medowie Pre-School Committee, Medowie Public School Vegetable Garden group, helped establish the Fern Bay/Fullerton Cove Progress Association, and much more besides.

Mrs Dingle said, “We will miss him for lots of reasons.”

“He was the local in local government.”

“He didn’t want to pursue a political career, that wasn’t his reason for running for Council.”

“His intention was to help the community.”

“He was community through and through.”

Reflecting on the private side of living with her husband, Mrs Dingle said, “I miss our walks with our dogs.”

“For nearly 30 years we walked every single morning before work and that was our time together.”

“That was when we would talk things through and make plans.”

In addition to his public life, Mr Dingle had a successful career.

Beginning as an engineer at BHP, he also worked at Tomago Aluminium as a maintenance engineer, Carrington Slipways, Workplace Resource Centre, One Steel, and also ran his own training and development business.

Working with trainees and apprentices was a highlight of Mr Dingle’s working life.

Born in 1950, Geoff’s mother (95 years) has said that his love of steam trains started at a young age when they lived in Summerhill and Geoff would sit on the fence and watch the trains.

Mr Dingle loved steam trains, gardening, walking, and his dogs.

Geoff is survived by his mother, wife, three sons— Chris, Robert, Nicholas—, and six grandchildren.

Golf Day hit $7.8K q Dale Gardiner, Graham Donnelly, Marty Redriff and Kris Paton took out the charity day.

THE seventh annual Dave White Memorial Golf Day ran on Friday 27 December at Nelson Bay Golf Club with a huge field of 143 punters teeing off.

This year volunteers and participants helped raise $7880 for Chris Poulos, a Port Stephens expat who suffered a horrific spinal accident whilst surfing at Dudley Beach in late November..

Perry White, son of the late great Dave White, said that the day was about getting behind causes close to the community’s heart and ones that his own father would have been proud to support.

“Chris (Poulos) grew up in Anna Bay and played Rugby League for the Northern Blues here,” said Mr White.

“Dad had a lot to do with the Blues over the years and was a passionate supporter of them, he knew Chris and his family pretty well.”

The memorial event is going from strength-tostrength with over 50 more competitors turning out compared to previous years.

“As always the Tomaree Peninsula got behind the day and a great cause to help one of their own,” said Mr White.

This year the top honours went to Dale Gardiner, Graham Donnelly, Marty Redriff and Kris Paton who took out the Dave White memorial trophy.

Shane Merchi took out the Lenny ‘Lizard’ Plimmer closest to the pin award with Aaron Duffy and Sean O’Malley sending some serious heat down the fairways on the 1st and 18th holes.

As always the day culminated with an abundance of celebratory swigs at Anna Bay Tavern, Dave’s old stomping ground.

The event was supported by numerous local businesses and organisers hope to keep the day growing each and every year.

“Don’t count the days, make the days count,” said Mr White.
