Fundraiser for RFS and Salvos

THE current Bushfires have left behind devastation for many residents, businesses and native wildlife in NSW and Australia.

While the Port Stephens region has remained largely untouched by fire, our local Fire Services have been actively involved in fighting fires in other areas.

Many local residents have had family members impacted by the devastation of the ongoing fires or have family members active with the RFS and fighting fires, away from home.

As a community focused region, Mayor Ryan Palmer and Nelson Bay Golf Club are co-hosting a Bushfire Appeal Golf Day 13 February 2020

Mans dies after car hits tree A MAN has died in a single vehicle crash north of Raymond Terrace.

About 1.50pm on Friday 17 January, a Holden vehicle towing a box trailer was travelling north along The Buckets Way, at Twelve Mile Creek, when it left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The driver and sole occupant, a 32-year-old man, was trapped in the vehicle.

NSW Ambulance paramedics attempted to revive the driver, but he died at the scene.

Officers from Port StephensHunter Police District attended the scene and commenced an investigation.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or motorists who were in the area at the time and may have dam footage to contact Raymond Terrace Police Station.

Australia Day Festivities for 2020 set to be Huge FROM Page 1

Day celebrations at the Bay will also be raising money to support those impacted by the nightmare bushfire season.

There will be free Australian Flags and chips, pony rides and jumping castles for children.

The kids will also love the magic displays and workshops along with alpaca and sheep shearing demonstrations, baby animals and reptile shows and education sessions.

For the young at heart there is the Vintage and Classic cars on display and the RAAF Flypast.

At 12 noon the Salute to the Flag will be conducted,

followed by Citizenship ceremonies and some of Port Stephens residents being recognised for their contribution to the community.

There will also be markets and educational displays from the Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire Brigade, and the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre’s Spinners and Weavers.

The headline act for the Bay event will be the Band Misbehave scheduled to play after the Flag raising and from 2.15pm.

q Rotary Club of Raymond Terrace will help host a family fun day at Riverside Park.

Also performing on the main stage from 9.30am will be the Hunter School of Performing Arts Band and local dancers.

The event kicks off with a Parade from Layman Street Nelson Bay to Fly Point at 9am and will conclude at 3pm.

FINGAL Bay RFS member Curtis Nunn recently spoke to the Probus Club of Fingal Bay. Local Port Stephens RFS teams have been travelling far and wide to assist with the bushfire crisis in Australia.

Locally the RFS has spent over a week working on extinguishing the fires near Eucalyptus Drive at One Mile Beach.

Julia Redlich of the Fingal Bay Probus Club told News Of The Area, “It was timely and topical when the Fingal Bay Probus Club recently welcomed a Speaker from the Fingal Bay

Rural Fire Brigade.

Curtis Nunn, like many of his family, was proof positive of the dedication of volunteers.

“He arrived, having just finished a spell of duty; he’d had no time to change, and only stopped for a quick coffee before sharing his experience in advising about readying our homes and families for bushfires, which have so recently dominated our country.

He spoke about how to prepare, act and survive which was comprehensively covered

and involved many more questions from his listeners afterwards.

Curtis received warm thanks for his time, as well as donations.

He also carried off two baskets of goodies to benefit of the wonderful volunteers who make up our local Rural Fire Brigade.

The Probus Club of Fingal Bay meets on the second Monday of each month at 9.30am at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay.

RFS Honoured At Jets

NEWCASTLE Jets were happy to support the Red Cross Bushfire Recovery Appeal last week and local Medowie and Karuah Rural Fire Service members were there to enjoy.

Fire Brigade members were asked to form the guard of honour for the A-League team as they walked out before their match against Sydney FC. Red Cross volunteers were on hand to collect donations and the Jets donated a further $1,000.00 for every goal scored by them in the Round 14 game, which they scored one.

RFS members were also given free entry to the game for a well-deserved night out.

Drought loans for farm-dependent small businesses THE Minister for Drought and Rural Finance David Littleproud has announced the new Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) loan for farm-dependent small businesses which is available from Monday 20 January.

“As drought continues to hit small businesses across rural Australia, the RIC’s AgBiz Drought Loans will offer financial relief,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our regional communities and they’re doing their best to serve farm businesses also affected by this drought.

“Those businesses livestock transporters, equipment repairers,

harvesting contractors – can use these small business drought loans to refinance existing debt or just keep their businesses going until the drought breaks.

Loans of up to $500,000 will be available with a twoyear interest free period.

Following those first two years, concessional interestonly payments will apply before principal and interest payments are required in the final five years of the 10-year loan term.

Guidelines and application forms for these new loans will be available on the RIC’s website www. ric.gov.au on Monday 20th January.

Region goes to Level 2 Water Restriction

LEVEL 2 water restrictions now apply across the Lower Hunter (as at monday 20 January), in response to the worst drought on record.

Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said tighter water restrictions are needed to help conserve the region’s drinking water supplies, with dam levels now at their lowest in almost 40 years.

“While it was a very welcome sight to see some rain, the severe drought continues across much of our state, including in the Lower Hunter,” Mrs Pavey said.

“The rain has helped wet the ground, but unfortunately due to the prolonged dry conditions, more follow-up rain is needed to significantly boost the region’s dams.

“Level 2 water restrictions are in place from today and it’s really important everyone continues to make water savings around their homes and businesses.”

Under Level 2 water restrictions, outdoor watering is limited to 15 minutes every second day while vehicles and buildings can only be washed with a bucket and showers are limited to four minutes.

Hunter Water’s Acting CEO Graham Wood said Hunter Water was prioritising its efforts to find and fix water leaks, in response to the challenging conditions.

“We recognise the community is doing their bit to save water, with usage down 18 per cent and I’d like to say thank you for following the water restrictions and loving water,” Mr Wood said.

“We’re doing our part by increasing our active leak detection work and bringing in additional crews to repair leaks quicker. We are also in the final stages of developing an assistance program for customers who find and fix leaks on their properties.”

Pigs Will Fly at Anna Bay For Country Kids

ANNA Bay Tavern has seen its fair share of porkies spun in the front bar over the years and come Sunday 9 February, the tall tales will be swapped out for the real thing with the annual Elders’ Insurance pig races in action.

Some lightning streaked piglets will be parading the track in aid of Country Hope, a charity which strives to help country kids going through tough times come out on top.

The family fun day, which will also include live music, raffles and auctions, is a fundraising precursor to the Riverina Redneck Rally in which Darren James and his pit crew will embark on come March.

“The races are all about getting together as a community and throwing as much in the hat as we can for those kids battling with some serious illnesses in the Riverina and surrounding areas,” said Mr James.

“With the rally finishing in Nelson Bay on the 6th of March this year we really hope we can get as many people from the area as we can out to the Tavern to support us and those kids in the bush.”

The day is set to kickoff at noon with the first race scheduled to start at 1pm.

One of Port Stephens’ favourite virtuose sons in Mick Jones will keep the crowd moving with a catalogue of classic pub anthems.

refreshments will be available to keep the energy levels up

Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) in the exciting final with both surfers trading off a bunch of decent scores, however, Clayton-Brown was able to gain the upper hand thanks to a handful of scores in the high seven-point range.

Sugar Cookie Fundraiser Set For This Saturday For The NSW RFS

THE recent Australian wide bushfires have started a National conversation about the support and resources that are required in a time of crisis.

Although the scale of a disaster can seem too big for an individual to tackle by themselves, their actions can be where a community comes together to address the wider issues that arise.

This is what Raelea Gibson from Winnie’s Sweet Creations hopes to do this Saturday 24 January, with a fundraiser selling custom designed sugar cookies for those who have helped battle the blazes near and far.

“I’m hoping the local Tomaree Peninsula

population and visitors alike come down and purchase these specially made cookies we’ve had designed, to support our firefighters who have been working months to get on top of these fires,” said Ms Gibson.

“All proceeds are going straight to the NSW RFS and local crews.”

Ms Gibson has baked over 1000 cookies for the stall that will be operating from 10am with pre-orders available for collection as well.

“I’ve had an overwhelming response online and had to stop taking orders for the cookies,” said Ms Gibson.

“It’s amazing to see the local support for those who are helping save our county.”

THURSDAY’S storms were a welcome relief for some, however it certainly kept our local SES busy.

NSW SES Port Stephens were activated yesterday by the State Operations Centre for multiple storm related jobs in the Port Stephens area.

Over the course of the afternoon, Port Stephens crews responded to 28 jobs with the Unit, fielding 20+ Operators.

Many of the requests for assistance received were for flooding, ceiling collapse and water ingress.

All four of the Unit’s vehicles were operational last night; Light Storm (PTS31), Light Rescue (PTS42), Medium Rescue (PTS45) and Heavy Rescue (PTS47) NSW SES Port Stephens Unit Controller, David Douglas, told News Of The Area, “It was great to see all the members jump to action in order to get the jobs completed quickly and safely.”

“We haven’t had a huge

demand for storm related jobs over the past year but it makes all the training worthwhile when we can help the community.”

David said, “The majority of our jobs were for leaking roofs and blocked drains and gutters. “ “Whilst we understand it’s not the most entertaining job for the weekend, cleaning down pipes, drains and gutters goes a long way in preventing damage to your house.”

TILLIGERRY RFS was literally 'blown away' by the recent donation of a $1000 firefighting appliance similar to a leaf blower. It was funded by the Tilligerry Lions Club.

Getting a life-saving back burn going can be a big problem to our firies as it burns slowly into the wind from the drip-torch line. With the

blower, the fire is blasted into the scrub towards the bushfire which then sucks the backburn towards itself and goes out with no more fuel to feed it. The blower can also be used to clear fire trails which saves hours of work using the traditional Mc Leod tool (a broad type of rake).

Small fires can also be

blasted out using the turbo charged blower. It could also be employed tidying up leaf litter around the station as well.

People wishing to make donations to the RFS are asked to take them directly to local brigades as there are (unfortunately) numerous scams

operating and some charities cream off a large percentage of donations as 'administration' fees.

This ensures that funds are used locally to improve the efficiency of our unpaid volunteers.

Bay and collection tins are prominent on the counters of retail businesses around the Peninsula. They are still looking for more members who are interested in long-term commitment to the cause.

SELLING property is not an exact science and there are numerous variables that come into play. Some are more practical such as some seasons being better than others.

TWO junior Medowie Marauder’s recently travelled to Armidale for the annual National Rugby Camp.

William McCulloch, 10 and George O’Meley, 11, spent four days at the intensive camp learning and developing their rugby union skills.

William told News Of The Area, “The best thing I learnt from the camp was correct tackling and meeting new people.”

He added, “ The most fun part was when we played bull rush.”

William’s Dad (Adam) said, ”The best thing from a Dad’s point of view was the respect the camp instructors were demonstrating to the young campers they were brilliant.”
