Last year’s Australia Day celebrations in Raymond Terrace.

A PACKED program of free, family-friendly events will be on offer across Port Stephens to celebrate Australia Day on Sunday 26 January 2020, with funds to be raised at the events to help with the bushfire emergency.

Events will be held at Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay, Lemon Tree Passage and Karuah, with everything from markets and live music to flypasts and speed boats.

Port Stephens Council is partnering with the Rotary Club of Raymond Terrace to host a family fun day at Riverside Park. Festivities will start at 8am with a free barbecue breakfast supported again this year by Raymond Terrace Bowling Club and cooked by the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Raymond Terrace.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer will preside over the official ceremony on The Mutual Stage at 9am with the presentation of the prestigious Port Stephens Annual Awards.

Australia Day Ambassador Ron Delezio — Father of Sophie Delezio and Co-founder of Day of Difference — will deliver the Australia Day Address in Raymond Terrace and later at Nelson Bay.

Councillor Giacomo Arnott response after escorted from the Council Meeting

Police have charged a man at Raymond Terrace after he allegedly filmed women showering and getting dressed without their consent.

ABOUT 10pm (Friday 10 January 2020), Police were called to an address in Raymond Terrace, after the intimate videos of three women, aged 22, 22 and 24, were allegedly found on the phone of the 23-year-old man.

The man was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where he was charged with three counts of intentionally recording an intimate image without consent, allegedly between April 2018 and January 2020.

The man was also issued with an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order in relation to one of the women.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday 4 February 2020.

IN December we saw an almost unprecedented act in our local Council Chambers.

Councillor Giacomo Arnott was escorted from the Council Meeting under Police escort after Mayor Ryan Palmer initiated the Councillor’s expulsion from the meeting.

The outraged Councillor Arnott was not happy about the actions taken against him, and the matter was referred to the Office Of Local Government for a Determination.

That Determination is in and Councillor Arnott has been vindicated.

The Office of Local Government found that the actions of Mayor Ryan Palmer at the Council Meeting in December in the expulsion of Councillor Arnott were unlawful.

Councillor Arnott told News Of The Area, “The Office of Local Government has investigated Mayor Ryan Palmer’s behaviour and they have determined that his actions, and my expulsion from the meeting, were unlawful.

The next Council Meeting according to the Port Stephens Council website is not scheduled until February 11, 2020.

The incident raises some alarming questions around democracy within local Government.

Port Stephens Council also actively engages with other stakeholders in the community like large land holders and NSW Government agencies to work together, and share the responsibility for managing their land.

These include NSW Police, Roads and Maritime Services, National Parks & Wildlife, Local Aboriginal Land Councils and State Forests.

“We acknowledge there may be incidents of illegal dumping that we may not be aware of and we actively encourage the community to report incidents to either Council or the NSW

EPA. “Community reporting of dumping is a crucial part of the ongoing solution,” he said.

Council wants to make it easy for people to do the right thing.

That’s why Council offers 2 on-call kerbside collections per calendar year for bulky items and green waste,” said Aaron Malloy, Council’s Waste Management Coordinator.

The community is urged to take advantage of free drop off days for green waste and problem waste like mattresses, tyres, chemicals and e-waste.

“We’ve found the introduction of these free drop off days has led to a decrease in the amount of these items being dumped illegally. For more information about Council’s waste services, visit https:// www.portstephens.nsw.gov.au/ live/resident-services/rubbishand-recycling,” said Malloy.

Of course one of the most sustainable solutions for household items is recycling and the Salamander Bay Recycling Centre takes all sorts of items like batteries, doors, and furniture.

THE Anna Bay 7 Day Makeover has certainly made a change in the streetscape and feel of the township of Anna Bay. The majority of the work was done in the first week of December with an immediate improvement in the look and feel of the township.

Cr Sarah Smith told News Of The Area, “Council set aside $350,000 for town centre revitalisation projects for Anna Bay. “Of this, it contributed $25,000 to the materials budget for the Anna Bay 7 Day Makeover

Tomaree Business Chamber President Leah Anderson who initiated the 7 Day Makeover through a public access address at a Council Meeting told News Of The Area, “It would be wonderful to continue to engage with Creative Communities to deliver this type of program however we now have the templates, tools and understanding how to replicate this type of program.”

The old Salamander Shopping Precinct has already reached out to Chamber with

a desire to replicate the Makeover in their precinct.

“Of course all Makeovers require funding and engagement from community groups along with help from Council to deliver.

“The community needs to have key groups that will band together to make things happen.

“Chamber will continue to be a key stakeholder and knowledge bank for the community and business engagement to achieve positive outcomes.”

There are still considerable funds available from the Council contribution to the Makeover with some speculating that this could be over $200,000.

Anderson is keen to continue to work with Council and the community to deliver more of the concepts developed in the Creative Communities day and a half long planning process which engaged with over 100 people.

“Watch this space and the townships all over Port Stephens to see where’s next,” she said.

Charged over alleged sexual abuse A MAN faced court on Tuesday charged over the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl at Raymond Terrace.

In January 2020, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a young girl was sexually abused by a man known to her.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a 60-year-old at about 4pm Monday 13 January 2020.

The man was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with three counts of sexual intercourse with child under the age of 10 years, intentionally sexually touch child under 10 years, and intentionally incite child under 10 years to sexually touch them.

Police will allege in court that the man sexually abused the girl – aged eight – numerous times at a home in Raymond Terrace between 2019 and 2020.

At the time of printing News Of The Area are aware the man was refused bail and dues to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court Tuesday 14 January 2020.

Investigations are continuing.

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.

We have a bit of a ‘toilet seat up’ or ‘toilet seat down’ argument going on in our household. What is appropriate?

Mrs SV, One Mile Dear Mrs SV, COMING from the salubrious suburb of One Mile, I’m surprised there is any argument at all. Don’t you lot have bidets and a voice-activated toilet seat warming system that says ‘Ready James’ when it reaches the required temperature?

I think we all have toilet adventures to share. I’d say my worst experience was travelling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. This train journey took 13 hours and after viewing the toilet, I made a little pact with myself that I would be able to hold on until we reached our destination. Of course that was wishful thinking given I had to consume quite a bit of vodka to cope with rattling through the countryside and listening to my sister complain that a flight would have been smarter. At around the 12 hour mark, I gave in and during a particularly turbulent section of of the journey, I attempted to hold on for dear life, hold my nose, balance over a hole that went directly onto the train tracks and empty my bladder. Now, I’m quite the multiskiller when required, Mrs SV, but I’m pretty sure I left that cubicle with wee on my face, toilet paper stuck to my shoes, the faecal matter of the last 24 visitors in my respiratory system, and the expression of someone who’d seen things that no-one should see. There was no issue with whether to leave the seat up or down, though. There was no seat.

I think it’s common courtesy to put the toilet seat down if you are a male and you share a bathroom with females.

It is also common courtesy to remove any traces of your visit such as reading material, stray body fluids, empty toilet rolls and so on. Few things are more annoying than an empty toilet roll on the floor and a new roll placed on the window sill instead of the toilet roll holder. Bathrooms are no place to display passive aggression.

Then there’s the whole ‘if it’s yellow, let it mellow’ debate. Given our current water restrictions, there are clear advantages. Really, though, not too many of us want to see someone else’s urine, so when visiting others, flushing is the safest bet.Thankfully I live on a bit of land so the males in this family often visit the lemon tree.

YM Efficiency community briefings for Port Stephens

YOU may be aware that on 12 December 2019, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority awarded the tender contract for Operation Recovery – YM Efficiency to Ardent Oceania.

Ardent Oceania is an international salvage and offshore construction operator we have tasked to remove 60 shipping containers lost overboard YM Efficiency off the Newcastle-Port Stephens coast on 1 June 2018.

These containers and their contents pose an ongoing unacceptable risk to the Australian coastal environment. We know that the declared contents of many of the containers are plastic and the steel containers will eventually corrode and release into the marine environment either

Commencing salvage operations to remove debris from your local waters is a priority for us, with preparations already underway ready to commence the four-week recovery operations during March 2020.

Recycle Centre Upgraded Honours Display $15K Pledge for local RFS

THIS Fire season has seen unprecedented challenges faced by the NSW RFS across the State with resources stretched and personnel exhausted from its increased duration.

Now more than ever Brigades are calling out for further assistance for new and upgraded equipment as the hotter and drier conditions look to continue into the future.

That’s why the Salamander Bay Recycle Centre has recently pledged $15,000 to be split between the Soldiers Point, Anna Bay and Fingal Bay Brigades to help meet shortfalls in Government funding for vital resources.

Gerard McClafferty, General Manager of Salamander Bay Recycle Centre, said that as the Organisation was run by the community, for the community, it was imperative to get behind the local RFS Brigades.

“With all the fires affecting the many towns across the State it was important that we got behind and supported the essential Services the RFS

provide,” said Mr McClafferty.

“Not only do we need our Brigades well equipped here at home, we also need them ready to help out other struggling communities in times of emergency.”

Daniel O’Meara, Captain of the Soldiers Point Brigade, said that the extra funds will come just in time to get prepared for the months and years ahead.

“We’ve had some damaged radio and communications gear from the last couple of months of being deployed and it will really help us out,” said Captain O’Meara.

“We only just got our main fire fighting truck back into the region before Christmas and it looks like we could be heading south to help around the Nowra region soon.”

Captain O’Meara emphasised that almost all crews across the State were “scraping the bottom of the barrel” and needed whatever support people could muster.”

SPINNAKERS flew and skiffs tacked up and down the bay with a large fleet of skiffs competing at Corlette over the past week.

The Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club hosted the week-long Australian 13 and 16 foot Skiff National Championships which concluded on Saturday.

62 boats in total competed in the event which saw good winds.

Lachlan MacPherson President of the Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club Inc told News Of The Area, “The 16 footer event was taken out by the Sutech Musto Racing Team clinching their maiden title.”

The winner of the final heat on Saturday as Brysons Lawyers who came in second overall in the Championship

event.

With Growth Built securing third place overall in the regatta.

This event is a precursor to the WASZP Australian Championship 2020 event will be held over the January 2427 weekend which will also see some great action on the

water.

While this event saw some serious racing the clubs regular sailing days are Thursdays and Sundays.

Local members predominantly sail Lasers and BICS. The Club is located in Salamander Bay near the new

Bannisters property and has some great facilities including boat storage.

The Club also offers a learn to sail program for juniors and has two qualified Australian Sailing Instructors.

Coming up on the sailing calendar is a two day Windsurfing Demo and
