Truck Helps Out Up North

it has remained to be used by other firefighters from the RFS, CFA (Victoria) and Victoria Forestry.

Denis Latchford from CFA Victoria told News Of The Area, “The NSW trucks are a little different to ours, but they are great.”

The trucks, being a State resource, are distributed around as needed throughout NSW, so Medowie 7 has been assisting in Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Grafton, Kempsey and Nambucca, with the firefighters working on her sending photos through to the local Brigade to keep them updated.

Once the work is complete, the truck will go in for a service and overhaul before being returned.

Whilst Medowie residents may be concerned that there is a truck short in the Station, Darryl Luck, Firefighter with Medowie Rural Fire Service,

told News Of The Area, “We still have back-up as always from neighbouring Brigades and Fire and Rescue NSW.” “On days of potentially bad fire behaviour, multiple Brigades will be responding to any bush or grass fire call as a pro-active and precautionary measure.”

“Salt Ash, Karuah and Raymond Terrace are often called to the same jobs as us, and if not needed, they simply return to their Station.”

Darryl added, “The best help for us if there is a bad fire in the area is for people to activate their bushfire plans.

If people have a plan to leave and act as planned, then we have one less worry, and the protection of people is the biggest worry we have, so by helping themselves, they are helping us in a big way.”

Smoke Affects Air Quality

BUSHFIRES have been raging and there is dust in the air coming from the drought stricken country areas of the state. With this air pollution comes multiple issues.

Some people are at greater risk due to poor air quality.

A Hunter New England Health spokesperson told News Of The Area, “Smoke can impact the respiratory system and cause a number of health problems, such as itchy or burning eyes, throat irritation, runny nose and illnesses such as bronchitis.

“Smoke particles can also aggravate existing lung conditions, such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma.”

For some, smoke in the air can bring on symptoms which can occur for several days after smoke is inhaled.

This means that those at risk need to be vigilant with their treatment programs.

If you or your child has

asthma now is a good time to check on your asthma management plan and make sure that you know what you need to do when the air quality is poor.

Hunter New England Health advises: If you develop symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, follow your asthma or COPD action plan and if symptoms do not settle, seek medical advice.

Healthy adults generally find that any symptoms they have developed during a bushfire event clear after the smoke disappears.

With more fires on the horizon, you can undertake the following precautions which can help you minimise adverse effects of bushfire smoke.

“Stay indoors, with windows and doors closed, or stay in air-conditioned premises, if possible.

“Avoid vigorous exercise, especially if you have asthma or a lung condition.

“Cover your nose and mouth with a mask designed to filter fine particles,” the spokesperson said.

The advice is that It is best to correctly wear and use a mask rated either P1 or P2 which is available from hardware stores.

“It’s a good reminder that people elsewhere are

dealing with bushfire emergencies, and that now is a great time to put together your bushfire survival plan.

“We still encourage people to contact 000 if they believe they can see or smell smoke that is more local, and a fire truck will be sent to investigate,” he said.

In countries such as Vietnam and Malaysia smoke haze and pollution is something which people deal with year round.

For us, it is something that we need to understand and be ready for when the bushfires revage our region.

Council Refuse Request from Diocese

Councillors deliberated, with a Motion to defer to obtain further information and statistics, and subsequently denied the request unanimously.

Councillor Arnott told News Of The Area, “This facility will bring nearly 2,000 people to Medowie every single school day, and these people will be using local roads, parks, footpaths, pools, and other public facilities.”

“It’s important that developments such as this pay what’s required to provide infrastructure for

THE recent Port Stephens Council Ordinary Meeting saw a request to waive Local Infrastructure Contributions from the Catholic Diocese for the new Catherine Macauley College being constructed at Medowie.

Representative for the Diocese, Mr Ray Bowen, spoke to the meeting during Public Access and reiterated the benefits to Port Stephens and specifically Medowie by the construction of the new school.

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is a notfor-profit charity and has 56 schools within the area currently, offering education to approximately 19,300 students.

New Look For Mambo Bus Shelter

New Look for Mambo Wanda Wetlands Sandy Point Road Bus Shelter thanks to Soldiers Point Lions Club and Port Stephens Council Cultural Grant

THE Lions Club of Soldiers Point has delivered on a Port Stephens Council Cultural Grant having worked with local artist Rhys Fabris, giving new life to the bus shelter on Sandy Point Road.

Artist Rhys Fabris has created a sunset mural featuring a sign for the iconic Mambo Wetlands which is adjacent to the bus shelter.

The response to Rhys’s latest outdoor artwork in the region has been positive

and Sharon Blunt, President of the Soldiers Point Lions Club is hopeful that funding can be secured into the future to enhance the local environment by painting murals on over 20 more Lions Club bus shelters.

Rhys’s other works can be seen in Nelson Bay in one of the alleys off Magnus Street along Salamander Way in two more Lions bus shelters and around the township of Anna Bay. Soldiers Point Lions President Sharon Blunt said, “This bus shelter is no longer daggy, it is something

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “When you have a Grants program like this you want to see something out there in the community.

This is something that will be lasting within our community for a really long time.

“If you look at any of the works that Rhys has done they really liven up an area.

It’s great work by the Lions to identify a project like this and bring it together with the artistic brilliance of someone like Rhys, create a unique artwork which is of great value to the community,” he said.

The Lions have their hearts set on a mural for the bus shelter which sits opposite the site of the new Koala sanctuary on Gan Gan Road and Rhys has already designed a koala themed mural for this location.

All that is needed to make this a reality is funding.

Dear Mrs LC, Did you happen to be heading along Gan Gan Road the other week, because I am almost certain I was hit with the sensory overload of a woman jogging and swearing profusely, a dog making frantic circles around her legs, the unmistakable sound of clanging bottles and the eye-watering stench of dog poo. I should have stopped, but I was on my way to a mindfulness and essential oils workshop and I didn’t need the negative vibes.

The main issue here, Mrs LC, is that you have tried to combine incompatible activities. Walking to the bottle shop for some mid-week wine (two bottles? I’m not judging) is a solitary task that involves a lot of planning. What on earth did you do with the pooch while you were trying to decide between a robust Merlot and a twangy Shiraz? If you tied it to a post, it was probably suffering from separation anxiety, hence its need to tie your legs together so you couldn’t escape. Dr Harry would have had a field day with the psychological damage you inflicted on your faithful hound.

Now, if we leave the wine bottles clanging together for a moment (enough to make even the most welltrained dog feel a little on edge), we come to the dog poo issue. I know this is possibly going to get me into trouble, because dog poo seems to be right up there with melting icecaps and microplastics, but I do think there are occasions when you just can’t effectively scoop up the poop.

An explosive bowel movement on a coastal succulent springs to mind. A holey bag is a clear breach of health and hygiene standards and I do admire your resilience when faced with that calamity. Flicking with a stick has some merit, but if you’re not an expert flicker, you could end up a nice dose of conjunctivitis.

I recommend you bulk buy your alcohol in advance and also bulk buy some strong (compostable) dog poo bags. Alternatively, teach your dog to go to the toilet on command in a specially designated compost area in your yard (not the veggie patch for obvious reasons).

Final PBL for 2019

It is due to return at the beginning of the 2020 school year.

Member for Port Stephens, Ms Kate Washington MP, handed out the PBL certificates to the recipients.

Ms Washington is a strong supporter of the PBL program and sees the benefits it brings to the schools and to the wider community.

Ms Washington said, “Well done to all the students GOL100 who received PBL awards tonight.”

Angel Billy Golf Day for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service

WE all may one day need an angel in the air.

The crew of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter are angels in our times of greatest need.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter commenced in 1975 as a weekend beach patrol and through community support and fundraising has become the service it is today.

The Angel Billy Golf Day was started in 1997 by Ron Smith who passed away in 2015, The event has become a major fixture for Nelson Bay Golf Club.

The event has raised over $680,000 over the 22 years and has had a good following, averaging 160 players per

Rob Wiblow, President of the local volunteers group for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter told News Of The Area, “We have over 150 prizes to give away on the day.

“Warren Moses in the Nelson Bay Golf Pro Shop does a magnificent job in putting the day together and getting the players on the course.

Of course we need many volunteers to assist in running the day, with many volunteers coming back year after year to help,” he said.

Harvey Norman Salamander Bay’s Toni & Dan Unthank have supported the Angel Billy since its inception in 1997 and are the events major sponsor this year.

Fingal Bay Ferrets always welcome across the Port

ON 8-9 NOVEMBER, it was pleasing to welcome the visiting “Fingal Bay Ferrets” to Tea Gardens again for some

quality bowls.

Fingal Bay provides some really good bowlers and as a bonus they are a great bunch to mix with socially.

Although there were no prizes for winners and losers

the competition against the “ferrets” is always close and all the Tea Gardens players enjoyed some good contests.

THE Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race will celebrate its 75th running in 2019 with 67 yachts taking part in the Sydney to Cabbage Tree Island Race, off Port Stephens on 9 November.

The 180nm Cabbage Tree Island Race is sailed by many crews in readiness for the great yacht race.

Legendary Australian sailor Gordon Ingate recalls, “I have sailed the Cabbage Tree Race at least six times.”
