Quarry beats Koala All Swim Free

By Marian SAMPSON IN the case of koalas versus the quarry, the Australian iconic has taken second place.

52 hectares of core koala habitat was green lighted last week to be cleared for the expansion of a quarry in Brandy Hill

by Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley. However, the community says the fight isn’t over yet.

The public outcry to the quarry expansion decision has inspired local action groups to continue campaigning and are currently working on strategies to stop the loss of this koala habitat.

Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens and Shadow Minister for the Environment, told News Of The Area, “The community campaign has been long and hard and they are looking to see what options come next.”

Minister Ley has claimed that the decision is a good outcome for the Port Stephens koala population.

“The clear finding from the NSW Government and the Commonwealth Department is that Brandy Hill’s expansion, to be staged over the next 25 years, will not rob the area of critical koala habitat.

“The 74 hectare koala corridor can however play an important role in nurturing

local populations and in delivering a net gain for local koalas by providing better quality habitat than is there at present,” she said.

A report on the Habitat Utilisation by Koalas in the proposed Brandy Hill quarry expansion site was prepared for the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment by Biolink Ecological Consultants.

The report determined that as few as one or two koalas were present in the proposed construction area and that the construction could be managed without impacting the small pockets on the south western edge of the wider site where koalas have been sighted by residents.

Minister Ley said she considered all environmental impacts, including the impacts of bushfires on koala habitats around the country, before making her decision.

DURING the COVID-19 lockdown, Tilligerry locals turned to books to escape the worries of the world.

The Council delivered books from its stockpile direct to doorsteps when the mobile library and the LTP facility closed during the crisis.

Since then we are more or less back to normal, with a wide array of options available to avid readers.

Both of the local charity stores keep books at give-away prices and the RSL sub-branch has a library of its own.

On top of this, The Senior Citizens Centre has a well stocked library.

A big problem is what to do with excess books.

The Council library in Lemon Tree gets a huge volume of donated books but there is just not enough shelf space to house them.

Even two book fairs couldn't shift the mountain of surplus stock.

Ally came into care when spear fisherman Ben Sharp found her at Boat Harbour, and she didn’t appear well.

The Port Stephens based conservation organisation Sea Shelter, working closely with Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters, has been involved in many sea turtle rescues over the years, however has always driven them to Taronga Wildlife Hospital for their ongoing rehabilitation.

Since opening their new location at 2 Jessie Road in Anna Bay, Irukandji has the facilities and space to allow rehabilitation right here in Port Stephens with Sea Shelter working from the quarantine area.

Thanks to National Parks and Wildlife, WINC and the amazing Taronga Wildlife Hospital, Irukandji and Sea Shelter are now off and running with the

25th Anniversary For Port Woodworking Club

IT’s been 25 years since John Goodwin placed an advertisement in the local paper calling for those interested in wood crafts to attend a meeting with the idea of forming a club which would enhance their skills and be a social and educational outlet for their free time.

On Tuesday, 1 August 1995, 28 people met at Nelson Bay High School.

Those present gave their support for the formation of the Port Stephens Woodworkers Club and John was duly elected as President.

Following successful negotiations the club was able to use the woodwork room at the school, including the school machinery and equipment and also use the school as a venue for club meetings.

The new club was officially incorporated and registered in 1996 as Port Stephens Woodworkers Club Inc. A move was made to The Tomaree Education Centre for meetings and use of the

machinery room but with a growing membership, the club needed a larger and more secure venue.

Temporary moves were made to members’ garages and then in mid-2004, approaches were made to the Arts Centre Board which resulted in serious discussions about the possibility of building a shed at the rear of the potter’s barn.

Many members contributed to the design, organised the funding, the majority coming from the NSW Regional Partnerships programme.

The club was renamed Port Stephens Community Woodworkers Inc. on 18 August 2006, to reflect its place in the community and the work done in the community, particularly with schools, disability centres and aged care.

Ines Thomas of the Port Stephens Woodworkers Club told News Of The Area, “The workshop was officially opened on 26 August 2007 by Bob Baldwin MP.” In 2018 the Port Stephens Council approved a

development application to extend the floor area by 50 percent.

“Funding came mainly from a state grant with the balance from the Arts Centre.

“Two federal grants assisted with the fit out.

“The new extension was opened on February 2019 by State MP, Kate Washington, Federal MP, Meryl Swanson and President of the Arts Centre, Carolyn Virgona.

“It was named the John Jeffress Extension in honour of the club President at the time,” she said.

The club currently has around 80 members and welcomes both men and women.

Members are involved with community activities and fundraising, primarily through school projects, Bunnings BBQs and an annual raffle.

Breast Cancer Support Group sewing support

By Marian SAMPSON WHILE Covid-19 has changed the way we live and work, some of those most vulnerable have been left with additional challenges.

For Port Stephens women undergoing treatment for

breast cancer support has been provided by the valiant volunteers of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group.

In normal times volunteers come together to sew comfort cushions for women who have had surgery.

After easing of restrictions

Kay Berkley offered her home to the group for a sewing bee and a lovely morning tea for the volunteers.

Judy Watton of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group told News Of The Area, “On Friday the ladies were able to meet at last and

40 cushions and drainage bags were made and packaged ready to be delivered to local patients and hospitals.

“We are hoping next year that we will be able to do our normal 4 sewing days to supply McGrath nurses and several hospitals,” she said.

The socially distant sewing bee was a success with supplies being sent out to be provided to women going

through very difficult times post surgery.

The members of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group are asking women to make sure that they put themselves first and undertake their regular mammogram and to get to know how their breasts look and feel so that they can detect changes early.

Regional jobs, underemployment and the future

By Marian SAMPSON JOBS are a hot topic across the globe as some countries and regions reopen and others are plunged back into lockdown.

Fortunately for Australia we are seeing positive results with Victoria showing that the virus can be combated and that numbers can be reduced to manageable levels.

This week the federal government has announced that they are starting to manufacture the Oxford University vaccine at CSL Laboratories.

The hope is that all Australians will be able to access the vaccine by the end of 2021.

However, jobs are what keeps food on the table and the economy moving.

Here in Port Stephens and on the Myall Coast we are seeing a return of visitation with weekend numbers up creating many part-time jobs particularly in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

For many a part-time job simply isn’t enough to cover the expenses of their household budgets.

Kate Washington member for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “I feel the hardship is yet to come, there is a lot already and more to come as people lose federal support and people who haven’t got a job or

enough work, it is going to become hard for families to get through.”

Historically we can see that recession sees young workers at risk of unemployment and we know that the impact of the economic downturn has been felt hardest by youth and women.

Ms Washington believes that more needs to be done to support these cohorts in the workplace. ”Women have lost more than men and talk of recovery is largely focused on male dominated industries,” she said.

She believes that investing sectors like construction supports the creation of jobs in male

dominated industries, while women and young people have also lost work opportunities.

“Giving young people the skills that they need to have fulfilling jobs and to get jobs is critical,” said Washington.

Catherine Cusack MLC for the Hunter also spoke to jobs and the importance of education for youth.

She believes it is important to educate youth and help them to become resilient in the changing job market.

Cusack recognises that women are facing greater employment challenges than men post pandemic.

“There has been a real focus on

the invasive nature and treatment for breast cancer and increases survival rates.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation report that 55 Australians are diagnosed with Breast Cancer every day, and 3,000 Australians will die this year from the disease.

1 in 7 Australian women and 1 in 675 Australian men are expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime, making it vital that all women are active in getting to know their breasts.

“Port Stephens region is tradie heavy being the workshop for the region and it is great to see that industry supported with apprenticeships.”

Ms Cusack believes there is going to be increased demand for trained staff for homecare packages and in aged care.

“There is, rightly now, a full on focus on aged care and training, and everybody is saying we haven’t done enough to upskill the staff and pay the staff in this sector,” she said.

Charged after Salamander crash

A MAN has been charged with 11 offences following an investigation into a two-vehicle crash, where two people died, in Port Stephens.

About 2pm on Wednesday 26 August 2020, a Toyota Aurion travelling north along Port Stephens Drive and a Holden Commodore travelling west along Salamander Way collided at a

roundabout.

The Toyota driver, a 77-year-old woman, and her passenger, an 80year old man, were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however they both died at the scene.

The Holden driver, a 44-year-old man, was treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital

for treatment of a non-life threatening head injury.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attended and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Ampcontrol awarded for innovation

TOMAGO based Ampcontrol has led the charge in innovation, and the company’s ability to pivot and innovate has been recognised.

Ampcontrol has taken out the gong for the 2020 Hunter Manufacturing Awards, Manufacturing Pivot Award, the 2020 Hunter Manufacturing Awards, Collaboration Partnership Award and the 2020 Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards, Excellence In Innovation, for designing and developing life saving ventilators in just 18 days at the peak of the COVID-19 crisis.

The landmark ventilator innovation project, is one of the most formidable local success stories to emerge over the past six months.

It was in March 2020, that the NSW Government put out a call-to-arms when it became clear that global shortages of vital medical equipment could impact the state's ability to respond to the escalating crisis.

Through collaboration with local clinicians and Hunter-based specialist electrical engineering companies NewieVentures and Safearth, Ampcontrol

responded by rapidly swinging its manufacturing facilities and engineering excellence to produce a fully functional emergency ventilator prototype in less than three weeks.

In September, Ampcontrol unveiled its fully developed ventilator solution, the Ventasys Emergency, reinforcing local manufacturing capability and highlighting a highlyskilled region ready for the next generation of product innovation.

NewieVentures Head of Technology, Heath Raftery told News Of The Area, “The Ventasys project is a fantastic example of what this region can do when bringing disparate minds together and challenging them to think beyond their capability.

“While it was a massive project and an honour to be recognised with the Awards, it's just one example of our collaborative potential,” he said.

The event guest speaker was Brooke Vitnell, Solicitor from David Vitnell Solicitors, presenting on women looking after women in the community.

Brooke spoke on the fastest growing cohort of homeless people in Australia today, women from 65-74 years old.

Tragically for women within this group, homelessness increased by 51% in five years to 2016.

Brooke stated that this may be more confronting than many of us realise because for many older women, homelessness manifests itself in relatives’ guests’ rooms, spare bedrooms

Latitude One community reaches 200th settlement SINCE the first residents moved into Latitude One by Ingenia Lifestyle in mid-2018, the Port Stephens community has since announced its 200th settlement as downsizers continue to snap up homes within the community.

The upgrades, funded

by Port Stephens Council, in part by developer contributions, will include new change rooms, canteen, accessible and unisex bathrooms, referees rooms and new first aid rooms.

Port Stephens Council’s Capital Works Section Manager Phil Miles says the works have been designed by Council’s own structures and landscaping team to ensure continuity with the local area and save ratepayer funds.

“The decision to use our own skilled architects strikes the balance between meeting the community and heritage needs without the cost variation from using an

external consultant.

“We try to design, develop and construct projects in-house as much as possible to ensure continuity across projects, reduce cost and maintain intellectual

property.

“It also provides more experience and motivation for our employees to see their own ideas and visions become a reality for the greater community,” he said.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says once complete, the new facilities will enhance the lives of the community by improving accessibility, inclusion, health and wellbeing.

NEXT week we recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by celebrating NAIDOC week from 8 to 15 November.

While we didn’t get to mark the occasion in July, we’ll still be celebrating virtually on our Port Stephens Council Facebook page at 10am Monday 9 November.

The NAIDOC 2020 theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges this nation’s story began at the dawn of time - it didn’t begin with the first reported European contact.

The theme invites all Australians to embrace and acknowledge the true history of our country.

NAIDOC week is a great opportunity for us all to acknowledge and celebrate the valuable contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make to Port Stephens.

The Worimi people are the traditional owners of this area and I’m proud of the strong relationship we have created together.

This partnership has seen us working side by side for many years, collaborating on a range of projects that promote understanding of Aboriginal culture and make Port Stephens a better place for all.

The historic Yabang Gumba-Gu or Road to Tomorrow Agreement, signed during NAIDOC Week in 2018 by our Council and the Local Aboriginal Land Councils, paves the way forward for us to achieve our shared objectives.

I hope you’ll join us as we renew our agreement on 9 November so that we can continue to work alongside the Worimi and Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Councils for the betterment of the Port Stephens community.

Port man wins $100,000 WHEN a Port Stephens man heard that someone from his town had won $100,000, he thought ‘oh that lucky person’, but today discovered he was the elusive winner lottery officials had been searching for.

The Hunter Region player won the First Prize of

$100,000 in Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot draw 10421, drawn Tuesday 27 October 2020.

The winning entry of 1-random number was purchased at Tanilba Bay Newsagency.

“I went to the newsagency to buy the newspaper, and

I heard a lady there saying someone had won $100,000,” said the winning player.

“I thought ‘oh that lucky person!’

“But then she said that the prize hadn’t been claimed yet and I knew I had some tickets to check.

“So I got the newsagent to

check mine and sure enough, I was the winner.

When asked how he planned to enjoy his prize, the winner held no hesitation.

“I would really like to go on a few holidays,” he said.

“Once the borders open up, I am sure we will be doing lots of travelling!

“I will share some with my family as well.

“There’s a few little toys I’d like to get myself too.”

Government Opens Community Consultation for New Option for Nelson Bay Road Duplication

LOCALS and regular visitors have long been awaiting dual lanes on Nelson Bay Road to ease traffic congestion and provide a safer journey to the Bay from Newcastle and Tomago.

The community is being asked to have their say on a new off-line option for the

upgrade of Nelson Bay Road between Williamtown and Bobs Farm.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government was investing $275 million to duplicate the busy corridor, which links residents, business and the community with Newcastle Airport and the Williamtown RAAF Base.

“The NSW Government has invested heavily in delivering a safer and more efficient Nelson Bay Road for the 25,000 motorists who use it every day, with work completed on the Bobs Farm to Anna Bay section in 2015 and the Medowie Road intersection in 2019, and work progressing on the Lemon Tree Passage Rd intersection,” Mr Toole said.

“The Williamtown to Bobs Farm duplication is the last major piece of this upgrade and will make a huge difference, delivering many benefits including improved traffic flow, better travel times and enhanced safety.

“That’s why when the community suggested a different route for the upgrade to the two we

originally proposed, we listened, we went back to the drawing board and came up with a third route option.

“We are going back out to the community today for their feedback on all three options.

This project will be a massive boost for the local economy, creating about 600 jobs, and we want to deliver it as soon as possible, but we also have to take the time to make sure we get it right.”

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack said Transport for NSW had already completed early work to upgrade the intersections at Medowie and Lemon Tree Passage roads.

“This upgrade is part of a larger package of works that are transforming the Nelson Bay Road corridor, which is why we are giving the community a side-by-side assessment of each option and how it will affect the road network, the environment, businesses and property,” Ms Cusack said.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “It's a real shame that we’re only seeing this option now.

“After years and years of government promises and missed deadlines, this eleventhhour route option will cause yet more delay.

“The Berejiklian Government has mismanaged this road project at every turn - Port Stephens just wants to see action.

“Moving forward, and based on the information released today, this looks like an

interesting opportunity for Port Stephens which warrants serious consideration.

“Our community will want to understand all of the impacts, particularly on affected residents, business owners and the environment,” she said.

She will be urging RMS to provide a public forum for residents to have their questions answered, and she encourages everyone to have their say to make sure we get the best outcome.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “The duplication of Nelson Bay Rd is one of Councils top advocacy priorities.

“We are extremely hopeful for a quick turnaround from the consultation process through to the start of construction,” he said.

Consultation will start on Monday, 2 November 2020 with the community and stakeholders able to provide submissions until Friday 27 November 2020.

Sailing club operator announced

PORT Stephens Council has appointed the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) as the new licensee and operator of the Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club facility effective 20 November 2020.

Corporate Services Group Manager Tim Crosdale says the appointment is the start of an exciting new chapter for the facility.

“After reviewing the submissions received as part of the expressions of interest process, we decided that Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is the preferred proponent for the new licence of the facility.

“The NCYC brings a wealth of

knowledge, expertise and potential benefits to the community that made the decision a unanimous one.

“As well as continuing community sailing programs, the new operators are excited to create a destination to encourage visitation to the area and support our local tourism and business economy.

“NCYC will work with the current operator to ensure continuity and will take over the licence from 20 November 2020,” he said.

President of the Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club Lachlan McPherson believes the appointment is a great outcome for all.

“Many are excited that a professional and well-resourced

group who share the same objectives, to further promote sailing and aquatic sports from this community asset, have the licence.

“Moving forward, this will benefit the whole Port Stephens area and sailing in general,” he

All shortlisted candidates have been notified of the decision.

Yesterday I was waiting in a long queue at the supermarket with about 20 items.

One of the staff members told me to go to the express aisle, which I did.

Within minutes, however, several people with less than 12 items started queuing behind me, giving me nasty looks.

Outreach clinic opens

TRIPLE C Health Family Practice has opened an outreach clinic at Bulahdelah in an effort to address the need for increased general practice services in the area.

The clinic will be colocated at the current Bulahdelah Health Campus at 10-12 Richmond Street, the former Bulahdelah Hospital.

Dr Sita Dewamitta (MBBS, FRACGP) said that she and her colleague Dr Bimalka Wijayanayake (MBBS, AMC) will work together to cover the current Triple C Health Practice at Karuah and the new outreach clinic at Bulahdelah.

“Residents of Bulahdelah

have been crying out for a long time now for more GP coverage,” said Dr Dewamitta.

“I’m getting patients from Bulahdelah at our practice in Karuah, and I know some even travel to Tea Gardens.

“If they need to see someone quickly, they have to travel or wait possibly weeks for an available appointment.

“I’ve also heard from locals that some patients are proactively booking well ahead just so they have a spot to see a doctor.”

All general practice services including child and adolescent health, men and women’s health, chronic disease management, health assessments, childhood

immunizations, work cover and minor surgical procedures will be available at the outreach clinic, in liaison with the nurse-led community health staff through Hunter New England Health and visiting allied health staff.

“I’ve already got interest from another doctor who may join as well, so hopefully we can work towards increasing hours and days down the track if the demand is there,” continued Dr Dewamitta.

All general practice services at the outreach clinic will be bulk billed.

Dr Dewamitta will be available at the Bulahdelah Health Campus on Mondays from 9am to 4.30pm.
