THOSE who attended the Nambucca Christmas Festival in 2019 will remember what a special night it was.

What was intended to be an annual event was derailed in subsequent years by the global pandemic however the good news is the Nambucca Christmas Festival is back!

On Thursday 15 December 2022 Bowra Street, Nambucca Heads will be closed to vehicle traffic from 4:00pm until 10:00pm and become a Christmas wonderland.

Thanks to the Lions Club of Nambucca Heads, The Nambucca Valley Rotary Club, The Nambucca Heads Chamber of Commerce, the Nambucca Heads RSL Club Ltd and the Nambucca Valley Council a spectacular evening of entertainment for the whole family will begin on the pedestrian only Bowra Street at 5:00pm.

The evening's entertainment will include presentations from the Frank Partridge VC and Nambucca Heads Public Schools and some surprise acts as well as a DJ on hand to keep the party going.

confirmation from the North Pole that Santa Claus himself will be arriving at 7:00pm and make his way along Bowra Street to meet everybody.

There will be food vans on the

street and many of Bowra Street’s cafes will also remain open for this special event.

Throughout the evening the Lions will be running their famous Chocolate Wheel where many many lucky people will walk away with a Christmas ham.

Lions will also launch their Australia Day Raffle and funds raised will go toward Parkinson's research.

For the littles ones there will be a petting zoo to visit and the not so little ones can even challenge a mechanical bull right there on

Bowra Street.

President of the Nambucca Heads Chamber of Commerce, Monique Kelly, told News Of The Area, “Businesses on Bowra Street are right behind this great event as what we all need now is real community and that is just what the Nambucca Christmas Festival is all about.”

Local sports facilities to get major upgrades

BOWRAVILLE and Bellingen will receive major upgrades to their sporting facilities through the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said $1.9 million had been allocated for the Bowraville MultiSport Hub and $3.57 million for Bellingen’s Connell Park Sports Precinct Redevelopment Project.

“This funding will modernise facilities for locals and enable more residents to enjoy the benefits of sport and active recreation,” Ms Pavey said.

“Sport is part of the fabric of our communities and our

government has a strong track record of investing in grassroots sport to deliver modern, accessible facilities.”

The Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund provides grants between $1 million and $5 million for new or upgraded sport facilities.

The Fund prioritises projects that provide inclusive and accessible facilities that enable more people to play sport.

Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the NSW Government has now invested $200 million in new and upgraded community sporting facilities through the first two rounds of the

program.

“These projects will not only provide more opportunities for people to play sport, but they will also generate a local sports facility infrastructure boom, creating thousands of jobs and delivering an economic boost for communities across NSW,” Mr Henskens said.

“Regardless of age, ability or the sport you play, this program is delivering game-changing projects that promote participation and secure a brighter future for local communities across NSW.”

The Bowraville Multi-Sport Hub (BMSH) upgrade builds on the concept of the Bowraville

Connections Sports precinct improving access for female participants and people with disability.

Upgrades will raise standards to match the recently developed hub building, bowls and golf facilities through upgraded changerooms, an outdoor bowling green, covered seating, solar technology, storage, reconfigured/cricket nets/field space, outdoor fitness equipment and walking paths.

The project will link and transform to 'present-day', a network of facilities that will connect to the main hub building for coordination and sustainability.

Main Beach Nambucca Heads Seawall Project

NAMBUCCA Valley Council’s Structures Team is finalising the current stage of works at Main Beach Nambucca Heads in preparation for reopening the site for the Christmas school holidays.

Council has achieved 65 percent completion of the bleacher wall, also known as stage one of the project, and anticipated completing construction of the adjacent footpath by 6 December

2022, weather permitting.

The bleacher wall was scheduled to be completed prior to the commencement of the Christmas school holiday period, however project delays due to wet weather and large swells prevented meeting this deadline.

The site will be decommissioned by Friday 16 December 2022 and a small fenced area will enclose the

remainder of the stage one footprint.

Damage sustained to the northern end of the carpark pedestrian access area will necessitate its closure during the holiday period.

Council officers are currently liaising with the Surf Life Saving Club regarding works programmed for the Clubhouse building in the New Year.

This may impact our return date however Council intend to recommence works at Main Beach in February, shortly after the school holidays are completed.

Once Main Beach and the Surf Club building is reopened for the Christmas school holiday period the hired temporary toilet located at Swimming Creek will be removed.

Council has received legal advice that the approvals required for the project are far more complex than first anticipated due to planning provisions within State Environmental Planning Policies.

Price escalations have seen the project costs now reach approximately $48 million which means it is classed as a state significant development for development consent purposes and therefore the Department of Planning and Environment become the consent authority.

Concerned citizens and regional media met with Kempsey Shire Mayor Leo Hauville in Stuarts Point on Tuesday to discuss the news.

In a media statement

on Tuesday Mayor Hauville said, “In late October your Councillors and I were briefed on an appalling development that saw NSW government legislation derail Council’s work to deliver a pressure sewerage scheme for Stuarts Point, Grassy Head and Fishermans Reach.

“Due to state government legislation that was poorly written in 2011, we were informed that there will be a delay in delivering the project by eighteen months.

“The legislation in question locked in a fixed amount of $30 million as the trigger to require an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), with no allowance for inflation during the ensuing years.”

Stuarts Point And District Community Organisation

(SPaDCO) Chairperson MaryLou Lewis said, “We are all concerned with imminent and ongoing EPA issues, not only contamination of dwellings but also the environment and waterways.

“Why were we not informed in October?”

Local resident Genevieve Lovell commented, “The Mayor has revealed the Council have known about the sewerage blow out since October, so what should we make of the councillors who profess to be interested in working for the whole

Kempsey community when not one of them declares the sewerage fiasco?”

The announcement came days before a community consultation meeting discussing large scale residential development in Stuarts Point.

“The email making the announcement went out to a selected few residents last night, and is it a coincidence that the Allum homes drop in information session is tomorrow night?

“How as a community can we move forward with all the issues we have when the council deliberately deceives

www.newsofthearea.com.au

the community?”

Karyn Martin spoke to media on behalf SPaDCO saying, “Now that this is in the hands of State Government, they need to stand up and get this done.

“The bottom line is that in 2022 no community ratepayers, and the rates are high, should be living with faecal matter in their yards and waterways.”

Mayor Hauville urges residents to contact Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey as well as the relevant ministers to petition them to overturn the requirement for an EIS.

Aviation Firefighting Industrial Action Averted

THE industrial action by the United Firefighters Union of Australia - Aviation Branch (UFUAV) that was proposed for today, Friday December 9 between 6am10am, has been averted.

The action included Coffs Harbour Airport.

A statement from Airservices Australia said it has finalised an in-principle, twelvemonth enterprise agreement with the union.

Under the new Agreement, Airservices’

Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service (ARFF) will receive a 4.9 percent salary increase.

This consists of a 3 percent increase in line with the Public Sector Interim Workplace Arrangements, and a 1.9 percent increase which would have been available in December 2021.

Airservices Australia CEO Jason Harfield said, “Airservices is pleased to have reached this inprinciple agreement with the UFUAV, which puts an end to proposed industrial action next week.

“This new agreement provides certainty for our ARFFs workforce, airlines and the travelling public.

“We commend all involved in reaching this new agreement.”

Aviation firefighters will halt a planned work stoppage on 9 December after reaching an inprinciple agreement with their employer, Airservices Australia, which will increase the number of aviation firefighters over time and prevent the shortages we are currently experiencing across Australia’s airports in the future.

Wes Garrett, from the United Firefighters Union of Australia - Aviation Branch, said that this was an incredible win for Australia’s air travellers.

“Our campaign has always been about protecting the safety of Australia’s air travellers,” Mr Garrett said.

“Every time your loved ones and friends board

an aircraft in Australia, they deserve fully staffed aviation firefighters to be there to protect them when they need it most.”

Mr Garrett said negotiations have been going on for more than a year.

“Critically, this agreement will eventually deliver aviation firefighter staffing in a manner that’s consistent with international aviation regulations.

“That means Australia’s air travellers will receive the same high standard of aviation firefighting protection that people in other developed countries receive.”

He said the in-principle agreement provides a longterm solution to preventing understaffing in the future but the risk to air travellers remains until Airservices recruits the 100 aviation firefighters that were cut from the service in October 2021.

Mr Garrett said the union will continue to hold Airservices to account to ensure they remedy the aviation firefighter shortage as quickly as possible.

URUNGAlights offers spectacular Christmas laser show

There will also be pop-up music and carols events in the park and a household and business lights competition.

URUNGA lights, a unique and spectacular Christmas laser light installation along Morgo Street, is a first for the Mid North Coast.

The light festival is running from 11 to 27 December 2022 between 7:30pm to 10:30pm every night.

The opening event on Sunday 11 December is at 6:30pm, until 8pm and will feature a family-favourites Christmas carols singalong.

Heather Rose will be singing, with Kaya Boom and local students offering exclusive drum performances.

There will be a guest appearance by Santa, and the official switching on of the laser lights.

“The twelve high-tech laser light display includes Christmas themes and animation, turning the street into a kaleidoscope of colour,” said the organisers, local business owners Mel Taylor and Bruce Miller.

The events are being funded by sponsorship from Urunga businesses.

Bellingen Shire Mayor Steve Allan said, “It is great to see Urunga businesses supporting Urunga with this unique event.”

URUNGAlights is the brainchild of Mel and Bruce who wanted to create something new, high impact and innovative which had longevity opposed to a big one-off gig.

They envisaged an event that was not weather or volunteer dependent and was a move away from fireworks.

“It's been years since the local community has been able to enjoy events, we set about thinking how do we create a series of pop-up style events to engage everyone?”

Mel told News Of The Area.

“The initial concept was decorations, which then morphed into a light installation and wanting to create a vibe throughout the town.

“What better way to do that than a series of small

pop-up events which enabled us to engage a large range of artists from the local area and offer a broader appeal with various touch points within

the

Mel and Bruce reached out to all of their contacts for introductions to artists, and the response was

overwhelming.

“We are very fortunate to have a wealth of talent in the local area.

“Locals and tourists can

enjoy the display at their leisure as they stroll the stunning waterfront on warm summer nights, with popup musicians most nights playing a variety of genres between 7pm-8pm bringing the streets alive with music.”

Kaya Boom also plays at an event targeted specifically for the youth of the area.

The strictly under18s dance party sees Kaya Boom's interactive drum session and DJ Fella on Saturday December 17 from 5.30-7.30pm, supported by the Neighbourhood Centres of Bellingen and CDAT.

Parents are welcome to come for a boogie too.

“We would not have been able to create such a dynamic summer series without the support of local businesses, in particular the generosity of Club Urunga, in conjunction with Urunga Business and Community, Oceanview Hotel, Raleigh Wines, Mid Coast Tiles, Cardows, Urunga Pharmacy to name a few,” said Mel.

“And a big shout out to Steve's Lighting and Sound for his wonderful creation and installation work.”

Scotts Head residents frustrated by mail issues

SCOTTS Head residents have been alarmed and frustrated by the recent lack of postal deliveries in the area, with repeated calls to the Australia Post helpline providing conflicting information, confounded by the fact that the nearest Post Office, located in Macksville, could offer little advice as the main contractor is located in another LGA.

“This has been an appalling situation, we had no mail delivered for two weeks and I was anxiously

waiting for a cheque, not to mention the Christmas correspondence,” said concerned local resident Penny Coleing.

An Australian Post spokesperson told NOTA, “Australia Post is committed to providing an efficient and reliable postal service in Scotts Head and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents with recent delays.

“We can confirm that all letters and parcel deliveries are up to date and there are no known delays.

“However, to assist with some staffing challenges experienced

by the local delivery contractor, we’ve put temporary measures in place which means letters are currently delivered on Tuesdays and Thursdays and parcels are delivered Tuesdays and Fridays.

“While this change is not creating any ongoing delays, we’re working hard to restore regular deliveries as soon as possible and we thank the Scotts Head community for their patience.

“Customers with any delivery concerns are encouraged to contact us on 13 13 18 for help and support.”

BABKS Cultural Award cancelled for 2022

THIS year’s BABKS Cultural Award for Music, Arts and Dance was set to go to the Arts in 2022.

Unfortunately, as High Schools from Woolgoolga to Macksville were unable to provide dates that artworks could be released due to HSC marking, it became necessary to cancel this year’s Award.

The Award in 2023 will likely be going to the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium of Music, Coffs Harbour (if they accept the

Koala Park Campaign Ramps Up

THE campaign for a Great Koala National Park (GKNP) has been buoyed by the success of the recent NSW koala conference held in Coffs Harbour on October 29.

The National Parks Association of NSW, which is coordinating the campaign, has a multi-pronged approach.

One major aspect of the campaign is fundraising to promote the issue.

Paula Flack, the National Parks Association GKNP Campaign Coordinator said, “As we get closer to the election we hope to be able to afford some television advertising.”

Currently, the campaign is primarily through social media and distributing pamphlets during conversations at markets and other events.

There is also merchandise, including a stylish new T-shirt created by Gumbaynggirr man Michael Donovan.

An important strategy is an e-petition that is on the NSW Legislative Assembly website.

If 20,000 NSW residents sign by April next year the petition will be debated by the new NSW Government.

In addition, a video by

international conservation photojournalist Paul Hilton and photographer Calumn Hockey explains why the GKNP is needed more than ever.

“It’s a grassroots campaign that has community and Gumbaynggirr representatives,” Ms Flack said.

“The GKNP will generate

enormous economic activity in the region, with far more jobs being created than exist currently in native forest logging, so it makes no sense to not create it.”

Part of the National Parks Association strategy is to lobby the government to ensure that any job losses in the timber industry are

replaced with accessible jobs.

Ms Flack pointed out that native forest logging is costing taxpayers millions of dollars each year.

“It’s also not just about jobs and timber, but about carbon storage, biodiversity, amenity, water supply and soil stability.

Ms Flack said the major

The Conservatorium will decide conditions of entry and judging.

The entries will be open to any High School students from Woolgoolga to Macksville and surrounding districts.

Further information will be provided in 2023 regarding entry dates and conditions.

National Water Safety Day

THURSDAY December 1 was the first day of summer and National Water Safety Day.

This is a great opportunity for us to remind all Australians of the importance of being safe in and around the water.

In 2020, Surf Life Saving successfully worked with the Australian Government to dedicate December 1 to raising awareness of an issue, which impacts every

community across the country.

Australians love the water and each year there are over 500 million visitations to 11,500 beaches across 52,000 kilometres of coastline.

As detailed in the SLSA 2022 National Coastal Safety Report, tragically there were 141 coastal drowning deaths across the country.

This grim figure is the highest number recorded and

reinforces how important it is that we continue to promote our key safety messages and supply information to help reduce drowning deaths and injuries across the country.

Last summer alone (December – February), 61 people lost their lives due to drowning.

This accounted for just under half (43 percent) of all coastal drowning deaths across

2021-22.

Tips for staying safe in the water this summer

• Swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags

• Wear a lifejacket if you are going boating, rock fishing, or on a watercraft

• Avoid alcohol and drugs while undertaking water activities

• Always supervise children on, in and around water at all times

• Check weather conditions before heading out

• Visit www.beachsafe.org.au

Urunga Boardwalk set to get a makeover

THE iconic Urunga Boardwalk is soon to be upgraded following the announcement that Council has successfully secured $3.96M in funding from Round Two of the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Activation Fund.

The renewal of the boardwalk will also allow improved access for those with mobility issues and require a wheelchair or other

assistance and help bring to life Council's Inclusive Tourism Strategy and Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

The boardwalk will use sustainable, recycled materials which also aligns to Council's sustainability practices as it continues to focus on becoming an Eco Certified destination.

Allan expressed his gratitude for the work done to date and application process to secure the funding that will inject life into this project.

“It is an important step towards making our region even more accessible and welcoming, not just for visitors but also our local community who spend time down on the waterfront with friends and family.”

The cost of entry was a donation to WIRES with some of the guests showing that they love their native wildlife as much as they love music by digging deep with over $560 being raised to support the care of sick, injured or orphaned wildlife here on the

drop to invite any locals who wanted to gather and sing some carols.

This grew every year and now 4000 people across the Valley gather each year.

Outgrowing the small grass patch, the Macksville Park (football oval) now accommodates the size of the turnout.

Macksville Christmas Carols by Candlelight is the local Salvation Army's

way to say thank you to the community for their support throughout the year and spread Christmas cheer in the Valley.

This year’s event is on Sunday 18 December 2022, with carols starting at 7pm (gates open earlier).

While the event is free, the Salvo’s do ask for a donation at the entrance gate, with all money raised benefiting the community through the

Salvo’s Welfare Program.

The night is jam packed full of live performances from local talent and kids Christmas activities, with quality food and coffee vendors for you to enjoy.

Performers include Dylan Hoskins, Di Coomes, St Pats Primary School, Graham Howle, Bluebird Support Disability Service, Sonia Francis, The Valley Line Dancers and Milli Mason.

latin numbers were lapped up by patrons as Julie’s soulful and soothing vocals braided perfectly into Ethans intricate fretwork and Jimm’s perfect bass.

A WIRES-MNC spokesperson told News Of The Area, “It is so touching that this incredibly talented

group of musicians went to all this effort to produce such a beautiful performance and did it free of charge so they could help care for our wildlife.”

The Matilda Street Gallery is no stranger to intimate gigs such as this and the evening was also the opening of their open Summer Art Show.

The LoggerHeads Malibu Club Wrap it up until 2023

LIKE most sporting clubs on the Mid North Coast the Nambucca Valley’s LoggerHeads Malibu Club enjoyed getting their sporting year back to comparative normality in 2022 after the disruption of the COVID pandemic.

Club President Barry Jagoe told News Of The Area, “Although we did not have to deal with COVID restrictions, the elements were not all that kind to us this year.

“We were able to get most of our monthly point score surfing done but the impact of dangerous swells and, at times, no swell, caused us to cancel more events than we would have liked.”

The 39-year-old LoggerHeads Malibu Club was able to hold its annual Classic in July this year after a COVID inflicted hiatus and as usual drew longboard surfers from all over the country.

On Saturday 3 December the LoggerHeads Malibu Club held their Annual Presentation day and Christmas Party at Scotts Reserve.

While members regaled each other with surfing tales of the year, the clubs winners were announced and trophies presented.

The Club Champion this year was Dillion Virag who surfed superbly all year and, as if to keep it in the family,

his closest rival was his partner, Layla Schwartz.

Layla also won the Ladies division for the year with Holly Williams coming in second.

The leading juniors for the year were brothers Luan and Sol Cunningham with Luan taking the honours in that category.

Luan was also awarded the gong for most improved for 2022.

The over 60s category was a close run race this year with Geoff Gardner just getting ahead of Mark ‘Merc’ Mercer.

Geoff Gardner will be looking over his shoulder next year with some hot

contenders now recently entering the over 60s category.

In the Open 9’ category Dillion Virag was untouchable and Barry Cunningham came in second.

Geoff Gardner was named Club Person of the

Year for his tireless efforts as Secretary/Treasurer.

In the specialty awards Dillion Virag took home the Ashes, with Troy Martin snatching both the Animal Award and the Classic at the Classic Award.

The most esteemed

award of the day went to the clubs outgoing Vice President Nikki Thompson, who was named as a Life Member of the LoggerHeads Malibu Club.

Nikki has been with the club for over sixteen years and for most of that has served on the committee.

She been a mainstay in ensuring the club has remained financially viable, and central in encouraging ladies and juniors to join the club and enjoy long board surfing.

The LoggerHeads Malibu Club will kick off their 2023 season in February and advise those interested in becoming members to visit their Facebook page.

Hip Mama Brings New Orleans to Bowraville

SARA-JAYNE Prince of Archive

Mid North Coast, the team that brought Kim Churchill and Hello TuTut to the Bowraville Theatre this year, is about to dish up the third amazing act in the series, Hip Mama.

Hip Mama was created when Ollie McGill, the keyboard king of The Cat Empire, met world class trumpeter and vocalist Georgie Chorley after she arrived home to Australia from a life changing trip to New Orleans.

Georgie wanted to express her extraordinary journey but

couldn't find the words.

They began writing and composing from these experiences, and Georgie inspired Ollie to conjure up his inner Dr John, and Professor Longhair.

From there, the two set off on a musical journey of New Orleans inspired songs, with a dash of Neo Soul, and a pinch of RnB, and found their own distinct musical flare.

Hip Mama is a combination of Ollie's incredible keyboard skills and Georgie's powerful and soaring vocals, resulting in a touch of grittiness and jazz.

Hip Mama features one

of the finest rhythm sections around with Pete Skelton on kit and Danny State on bass.

Hip Mama will be supported on the night by Little Kng.

This concert is the third of six events at the Bowraville Theatre presented by Archive Mid North Coast who’s program is designed to refresh and reliven the theatre, to provide opportunities for touring and local musicians and to bring accessible and inclusive music events to this regional community.

VALE Jim Cody - Rugby League Legend and Community Hero

Harbour where his sons, Matt and Adam, won an under 18s premiership in 1991.

FORMER NRL legend, Coffs

Harbour Comets coach and a foundation member of North Coast’s Men of League, Jim Cody, sadly passed away at the age of 79 last week.

Cody‘s stellar career of 128 First Grade matches for the Western Suburbs in the

1960s and 70s included a debut at the age of eighteen and a First Grade Grand Final.

Jim capped off a magnificent career with captain and coach roles at Nambucca Heads, Griffith, Goulburn United, Coffs Harbour Jetty, Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga and Sawtell Panthers.

After retiring from the NRL, Jim settled in Coffs

After his playing and coaching career, Cody continued to serve the community and touched the lives of many through the Men of League where he was a foundation member at the North Coast division.

Men of League foundation member Peter Barrett reflected on the sad loss of a fallen hero.

“Jim was a great Western Suburbs Magpies legend and

rated by Arthur Beetson as the toughest forward he played against,” he said.

“Jim was always available to visit hospitals, nursing and retirement homes for those not travelling well and lifting their spirits reliving old rugby league games.

“He was also a selector for North Coast Group 2 picking the winning super league team.

“He only retired five years ago from a successful plastering company with Bill Ross,” said Barrett.

Grumpy’s Grumble - Nambucca Heads Bowling Club

COMEDY has returned to the bowlo.

On Sunday last the crowd was falling out of their seats with laughter with the antics on the green and laughs on the balcony. So, if you’re not playing come down and have a laugh with the rest of us.

Last Friday finally the final of the Major Minor Pairs was played and it turned out to be a bit one sided.

The team of Urky and Mino played the machine Curran and Angry.

Angry led till the fourth end but dropped a 7 and from then on was playing catch-up but never got there.

Mino led like there was no tomorrow and the Machine couldn’t keep up proving that leads win matches.

Final score 29-8.

Saturday saw the start of the Mixed Pairs, and this is where husbands and wives try to get on for a couple of hours.

Neil and Margret Duffus played the hot side of Manor and Owen Smith (not married), and it went to an extra end which the Duffo’s won 25-24.

Another red-hot side of Elaine Fleming and The Machine Curran went down to Margaret Dwarte and Giddy Up Gallop 23-14. Rosemary Dugdale and Darcy played Bruce and Sandra Mason with this being Sandra’s first competitive game and she played very well.

Unfortunately for them Darcy and Rosemary with a bit more experience took the game out 28-14.

Gloria Richardson kept Red Dog on a tight lead to beat

Janice and Doug Cedelland 29-14.

Chris Davis and Urky beat Michelle Fredricks and Mickey Ellison 27-15 and Tina Ryan and Brendon Ruane went down to The Franck combination 25-19.

Quarter finals on Sunday and there was some mouthwatering match ups.

Nerada and Canadian Club Blackford played The Duffo’s winning 27 -11.

Urky and Chris beat the Franck’s 28-9 and Warren and Margaret played Eliza and Oxy in a fun packed game winning 29-17.

In the game of the round Gloria and Red Dog went down 24-16 to Rosemary and Darcy.

Semi and Finals are on this weekend weather permitting.

The Ham Wheel is up and running .Hams are prizes in the raffles and for the next two Fridays the Men’s Friday Bowls will have 3 (yes 3) hams for prizes.

The Member’s Draw has reached $3,700, the Fisho’s $1,000 went off last week so there are plenty of reasons to get down to your Bowlo and eat at The Greens Bistro and have a bit of Christmas Cheer.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club

THE onset of Summer has greeted us with some much needed rain – never thought I’d be saying that again!

Although showing some signs of stress in places, there is great run on the fairways and our greens are a pleasure to test our putting skills against some more interesting Pin placements from our greens staff.

The week’s featured sponsor is Macksville Mitre 10 – thank you for your continued support!

On Tuesday 29 November, Wayne Davies (18) from Toukley won the Medley Stableford event with 39 points from Colin Habgood (9) with 38 points.

Other good scores from Paul Mulvena 37, John Buganey & Garnet O’Brien 36, the ball rundown to 34 points on countback. NTP’s to Denis Priester (Helensvale) on 5, Sue Priester on 7, Julie Taylor got the “Pizza This” voucher on 13, Gary Scott got Stu’s ball on 15

and Garnet O’Brien on 18.

The women played a 4BBB Stableford event on Wednesday where Dianne Hopkins and Gwen Maxwell and Linda Piccin and Helen Ferrero both scored 45 points, the former winning on countback.

Mavis Davis and Faye Hopkins came in with 44 points on count back from Kerrie Eichorn and Sue Seymour, and the Ball Rundown to 42 points. NTP’s to Kerrie Eichorn and Lyn Vidler on 5, and Lisa Urquhart got the Pro Pin on 18.

Shot of the week goes to Dorothy Bunyan, a handy 37 marker and Club Member for 20 years, who had her first hole-in-one on the 13th after 30 years of playing golf.

Making sure she carried the infamous pond in front of the 13th Tee, the 87 year old Dorothy used her trusty Driver to easily clear the water hazard and Ace the 106 meter Par 3.

I understand there was much celebrating in the

Clubhouse at Presentationcongratulations Dorothy!

Our first summer competition on Thursday was decimated by continual light rain, with around a third of the field opting for dryer pursuits.

The Medley Stableford was won by Bryan Ussher (23) with 43 points from early Clubhouse leader Hans Jansen (22) who told me that a few potentially good holes got away, with 42 points - what could have been! Good scores also from Raymond Guiana and Joe Street on 40 points, and the Ball Rundown to 33 on countback.

Glen Crow claimed the longest Putt on 2, with other NTP’s going to Bryan Ussher on 5 and the “Pizza This” voucher on 13, Roy Louis on 7, Peter Dawe on 8, Paul Ryan on 15 and Drew Glasson got the Pro Pin Jackpot on 18 with a great shot off the Tee to only 60cms.

Saturday’s event was the Men’s Monthly Medal sponsored by Nambucca Local Liquor – thank you Bushy!

Macksville Country Club Golf

A BIG weekend of golf began with the Craig Marsay Glass and Aluminium sponsored Robyn Marsay Memorial Mug and Spoon stroke event.

This was won by Jeff Gore with Max Graham runner up.

Straight shooters with nearest the pins were Mike Simpson (A) Brad Southan (B) and Dave Poole (C grade).

Included in this event was the playoff of Mug and Spoon winners (mug for gross score and Spoon for net) for each month throughout the year.

Allan Clarke won the Gross with Steve Ellis the Net.

Neil Cuneen was the Mid Week winner and Mick Manning runner up.

Sunday was the Mike Simpson organised Eclectic, being three groups of nine players who play to a stableford format. At the end of each hole the player with the lowest score is eliminated.

If there is more than one on the lowest score they all chip onto the green from twenty metres back.

The player furthest from the flag is eliminated.

At the ninth tee there is only one player left in each

group.

Those three play the last hole to determine the winner.

The playoff was between John Fortescue, Luke Laverty and Darren Pike.

Luke Laverty, the youngest player in the competition, prevailed.

"The Longest Day” is a fundraiser for the Cancer Council where participants have to play 72 holes of golf on 12 December.

Brad Fortescue is again volunteering to punish himself, and would welcome any sponsorship.

The December Medal winners were Graham Watson (9) “A” Grade with net 69, Ashton Herbert (17) “B” Grade net 65, and Peter Moxon (19) “C” Grade with a great round of net 63.

“A” Grade runner up Philip Mander (12) net 70, Gross Bruce Berry 78.

“B” Grade runner up was Trevor Peter (17) with net 69 and gross to Mark McLaren 85. Geoffrey Poole (28) was “C” grade runner up with net 67, and gross went to David Wilson 88.

Other good scores from Andrew Bagust, Stephen Kimber, Andrew Johnston and Rod Habgood, all net 69.

NTP’s to Anthony Smith for the longest Putt on 2, Graham Watson on 5, Stephen McNeil on 7, Rodney Ford on 8, Peter Shepherd got the “Pizza This” voucher on 13, Craig Haworth on 15 and Garry Johnstone on only 81cms away from the pin on 18 to bag the Pro Pin Jackpot.

On Sunday, we played the last “Island Sunday” 4BBB

Mixed Stableford, generously sponsored by Lyn Grose and Steve Ward from “A Piza This A Pizza That” – a good field of 20 couples enjoying the themed “Christmas Mixed”.

Jennifer and Andrew Johnston and Henny Oldenhove & Rupo Ylinen both scored 46 points, with the Johnstons winning the countback.

Other good scores winning a ball from the McCanns 43, Brooks 43, Kimbers 42, Rowe/ Barrett 42, and Browlnies 41.

NTP’s to Paul Maxwell on 5, Lyn Grose on 13, John

Barrett and Lyn Grose on 18. Everyone enjoyed the huge variety of Pizza provided compliments of Steve after the game, and cake and other festive treats provided by the McGoldricks – thank you all!

There were lots of surprises when the Kris Kringles were handed out!

We are fully sponsored for next year’s Island Sundays, thank you everyone.

Don’t miss the “Ham & Turkey Day”/Yellow Shirt Cancer Council Fundraiser on Saturday 10 December.

See you on the Island!

Surf Boat Racing hits the Nambucca River

THE latest round of the North Coast Surf Boat Series was held over the weekend of December 3 and 4 on the Nambucca River at Macksville.

The event racing was originally set down for Scotts Head Beach but was relocated due to huge swells generated by an East Coast low pressure system.

There were teams from the Central Coast, Hunter, North Coast and invitational teams from the Tweed and Gold Coast.

The quality of racing was excellent with some very good results for the locals from the Macksville/Scotts Head Surf

Life Saving Club.

News Of The Area spoke to Phil Lytham, the referee of the Surf Boat Series, on Sunday at

the event.

“This weekend is the second event of the season for the teams from the Central

Coast/Hunter/North Coast, and to the border, to compete against each other.''

Phil gave NOTA his thoughts on the crews to watch.

''The crews from Avoca on the Central Coast would be one of the favourites but Port Macquarie and Woolgoolga would be very competitive.''

Macksville/Scotts Head competed strongly with the Women's Reserve and 180 Masters Division clinching victory in their divisions.

The ladies who competed were Andrea Nikas, Jo King, Ray Wiblen (Sweep), Leah Essex and Vanette McLean,

with Ray Wiblen as Sweep.

The Macksville/Scotts Head Men's 200 year Masters Crew also competed well against some of the biggest clubs on the East Coast.

The men who competed were Steve Russo, Rick Andrews, Mike Coulter and Butch Laverty.

Enjoying the spectacle of Surf Boat racing in Macksville, onlookers aplenty were on hand to watch the event from the many vantage points along the Nambucca River.

With positive feedback about the river as a competition location, there was talk amongst officials that the Nambucca River could be an early season racing venue in the near future.

HYPOTHETICAL

Taking a Legal Look

Dorin’s Draws

Contracts and questionable capacity

JOHN decides to sell his home and retains a real estate agent in early December.

The property is promptly listed for sale.

The agent meets with John several times at John’s house and finds John to be quite an easy-going man.

The agent does not receive an offer on John’s house until May.

John accepts the offer and drives to the agent’s office where he signs the Contract.

The agent notices that John is quite agitated.

The signed Contract is then forwarded to a solicitor who immediately attempts to contact John to obtain instructions regarding settlement.

A week passes and the solicitor still has not been able to contact John.

The agent decides to drive out to John’s house.

When the agent pulls into the driveway, John comes storming out of his house, hurling verbal abuse and threatening to ‘bash’ him if he ever returned.

The agent promptly leaves and informs the solicitor that he would not return to John’s house without a police guard.

Unable to obtain instructions from John, his solicitor manages to track down John’s brother and asks him to contact John.

He says “No way, John’s crazy”.

The sale is not able to settle and eventually the purchasers commence action in the Supreme Court seeking an order for specific performance.

John’s solicitor is unable to represent John in the Supreme Court proceedings because he cannot obtain instructions.

The solicitor instead writes a letter to the Court, stating that John appeared to be suffering from a mental illness and that he may not have had the capacity to enter-into the Contract.

However, because John did not appear in Court and was not represented at the hearing, the Court rules that, unless there is evidence to the contrary, all adults are presumed to have capacity to enterinto contracts and makes orders for settlement of the sale to proceed.

I've recently had the flu and so my husband has been sleeping in the office.

The thing is, I've been sleeping better than I have in years.

There is no one pulling the covers off me.

I don't get cold. I can't hear his snoring.

How should I approach speaking to him about keeping this arrangement?

Dear Miriam,

I know of many couples who no longer share a bed and they seem to be thriving for reasons very similar to the ones you've outlined.

proven facts.

Can we have respectful debate around the environment?

DEAR News Of The Area,

I HAVE just received an abusive phone call from a man who didn't like my letters to your newspaper about protecting our environment.

I wonder why he is so angry and why he didn't identify himself?

It would be great to have a respectful debate about this issue based on science and

Hopefully the abusive man will read facts and study the science about the need to save our flora and fauna which might mean he would change his mind and work to stop damage to our environment.

Local police have been informed.

The Festive Season

IT’S that time once again when we start thinking of gifts for our children, family and friends.

So many ideas and so little time remaining till Christmas Day, so why not consider Red Cross as your shopping destination. The Little Red Cross Shoppe – Bowra Street

Red Cross are very proud of this little shoppe that sells a wide choice of quality handmade products and gifts.

The shop has a warm and friendly ambiance with friendly staff who are there to help and advise you on that ‘perfect’ gift.

If you are thinking of a gift with a difference, then consider the new range of ‘Rainbow Valley’ jams from a local supplier at Newee Creek.

Other products like their Tomato Relish and Blueberry Jams have always been popular lines and are reasonably prices and practical buys.

If you are looking for a gift for a new born, then look no further.

The shop has beautiful packs for a boy or girl which are so reasonably priced and packaged to satisfy the most discerning eye.

The window displays are showcasing small miniature cars and VW combis from $5.00 and they are colourful and can fill your stocking or make a practical gift to post.

Bright and appealing Christmas hand towels and tea towels made by local residents, make a truly useful and practical gift for all

ages.

Marion’s Teahouse – Bowra Street

The menu at the Teahouse this month will reflect the approach of Christmas.

Irene has been busy creating mini fruit cakes for Christmas which can be served at the teahouse or purchased separately.

If turkey is a favourite, then enjoy Irene’s home baked turkey served with salad or indulge in her avocado and turkey melts and don’t forget the traditional rums balls or white Christmas.

Irene is especially grateful to her regular customers and to local business houses, McGraths Real Estate and LJ Hooker, BCU, the Commonwealth Bank and In Touch, all of whom have supported the teahouse throughout the year.

It’s not too late to book for your Christmas Party at the Teahouse so call 0450163660 for further details.

Feedback: Community Events Community Outreach Day: 18 November 2022

Over 70 residents from

Some have gone a step further and moved into separate residences, rekindling the romance in their relationship by inviting each other over for meals.

Poor sleep can have an impact on many things including your attention span, your mood, your decision-making ability, and your overall health.

Perhaps your husband's quality of sleep has also improved.

If you are worried about losing your romantic attachment to each other, remind yourself that there is very little romance in wanting to throttle your partner because he snores like a freight train. Perhaps you could have sleepovers or sneak into each other's rooms to keep things exciting. You'll probably have a lot more energy if you are both sleeping soundly.

Taylors Arm, Utungun and South Arm took advantage of this day to reconnect with Red Cross and a number of agencies.

The main issues raised by local residents included damage to roads, flood erosion, landslides and telecommunications.

Agencies present included: Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Service NSW, the Regional Tech Hub, the Rural Financial Counselling Service NSW (RFCSN), Mid North Coast Legal Centre, Mid North Coast Mental Health Services and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Red Cross Emergency Services and agency personnel were very grateful for the light refreshments provided by local volunteers at each location.

NSW Farmers Association Nambucca Valley River Branch: 26 November 2022

Secretary Julie Gooch extended an invite to our Emergency Services Team to attend their Christmas Social gathering.

The evening was a great

opportunity to meet farming members, families and friends throughout the Nambucca Valley which numbered 38 on the night.

We were treated to a delicious BBQ dinner and home-made desserts.

We were given the opportunity to gain an insight through our conversations and meeting, into the demands of life on the land post drought, fire and floods.

FRIDAY

CHRISTMAS WITH AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S WEEKLY

TEN, 7.30pm

The incoming host of The Project, Sarah Harris (above left), along with Santa’s team of elves at the Australian Women’s Weekly are here with some famous friends and a selection of handy tips for getting through the silly season unscathed. While Jessica Rowe gets creative with crafty Christmas decorations and eyecatching wrapping ideas, chefs Lyndey Milan and Warren Mendes share their most delicious recipes for your festive functions.

SATURDAY CHRISTMAS WITH DELTA

NBN, 7.30pm

Delta Goodrem has reason to celebrate this Christmas – next year will mark the 20th anniversary of her record-breaking debut album Eyes; she’s loved up with her long-time boyfriend Matthew Copley; and she’s set to perform at a special event in the Maldives in May. But before she turns her focus to 2023, the Born to Try singer gets into the festive spirit with this cheerful special. Among the stars joining Goodrem to sing some Christmas classics are Hanson, Thelma Plum, The Lumineers, Conrad Sewell, Sam Fischer and Gwen Stefani. Goodrem also pays a heartfelt tribute to her mentor and friend, the late, great Olivia NewtonJohn.

TUESDAY MINISERIES: CROSSFIRE

TEN, 8.30pm

Prepare to be emotionally pummelled by this gripping threepart British drama. Airing over three consecutive nights, you might find the gut-wrenching scenario interrupting any idyllic dreams of a carefree holiday. Starring Keeley Hawes (The Bodyguard), who also co-produced, it’s not based on a true story, but has the ingredients of being ripped from multiple headlines. In tonight’s premiere, ex-cop Jo’s (Hawes) sun, pool and cocktail-filled family and friends holiday is devastated when gunmen attack the luxurious Spanish hotel they are staying at. Suddenly, the mother-ofthree transforms into a rifle-toting heroine in a transfixing, gripping turn.

Coach Caryl

Caryl told News of the Area, “I come from

Nambucca Heads and played junior league here up until the under 11s when I had to switch to touch as opportunities for girls tackle footy were not available in those days although I was eventually able to get back into the game.

“There have been girls interested in playing Rugby League here for the last few years so I do not think we will have any trouble attracting great players.”

With a track record of being able to take a team to a grand final, News Of The Area asked Caryl what she was aiming for with the new team in the 2023 season.

“I will be aiming for a semi final place in the first year but the priority will be building a strong foundation for an enduring women's team,” Caryl said.

News Of The Area also spoke to aspiring Rugby League player Jamie-Lee Duckett who said, “It would be an honour to play under a coach as accomplished as Caryl Jarrett.”

“With professional Rugby League taking off in Australia I think that there will be a lot of girls who will be attracted to playing with the Roosters who may see this as a stepping stone to the top level of the game.”

President of the Nambucca Rooster RLFC, Peter Bellden, told News Of The Area, “The draw for next year is still being worked out but we are hopeful of being able to have a number of the women’s games as the curtain raisers to our first grade home games.”

Coffs cricket matches washed out during latest round

THE wet start to summer meant the cancellation of most games during the latest round of both the Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association and North Coast Cricket Council’s Premier League seasons last weekend.

The midweek T20 Cup fixtures were also declared as washed out, while the latest round of Premier League games was washed out.

Some matches were still played throughout the Coffs Coast region.

Bellingen beat Sawtell

by 16 runs in their secondgrade match at Bellingen.

Ross Bailey top scored for Bellingen with a knock of 67.

Two third grade matches were played with the Northern Districts Rebels winning by five wickets against Diggers Cricket Club in their one-day match at Reg Ryan Oval, and Sawtell beating Bellingen by 4 wickets at Toormina Oval.

Craig Wirth top scored for the Rebels retiring on 50 not out, while Rodney Sawaya finished on 45 not out off 32 balls for Sawtell.

TheNorth Coast Cricket Council’s Premier League season continues tomorrow with the latest round of one day matches to be played in Coffs Harbour and Harwood.

Diggers/Nana Glen All Stars play host to the Northern Districts Rebels

at Fitzroy Oval, while Coffs Colts host Valleys Cricket at Coffs Coast Sport & Leisure Park.

The All Stars and Rebels are both coming off losses, while the Colts and Valleys are coming off last start wins.

Sawtell travels to take on Harwood at Harwood Oval, with Harwood the early ladder leaders having won their first three matches of the season.

Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s first grade season is also scheduled to continue this weekend with matches in Coffs Harbour and Sawtell.

Nana Glen and the Northern Districts Rebels play off at Coffs Coast Sport & Leisure Park, while Diggers Cricket Club and Urunga also meet at the venue.
