By Mick BIRTLES RIO CARNIVAL comes to Bowraville in the most fabulous way on Saturday 5 February 2022 with a fundraiser for the iconic Bowraville Theatre.

It is no secret the performing arts sector has been severely affected by the pandemic and the volunteer operated Bowraville Theatre still has bills to pay, however has been unable to open its doors to bring in revenue.

Enter stage left Rocky Rewha Rewha from the Bowraville Art Council and his able team, mix with a million sequins, big hair, awesome music and barrels of laughs, put them on the verandah of the Bowra Hotel and you have a fundraising event that will be talked about for years to come.

development at 11 Ocean Ridge Road, Way Way. Ingenia Lifestyle is a leading owner and developer of over 55’s lifestyle type communities.

The proposal will cater for a minimum of 100 sites in an area that is presently zoned Rural.

The Ocean Ridge Road site is still in its development and community consultation stage.

A Nambucca Valley Council representative spoke with News Of The Area, confirming to date no DA has yet been submitted by Ingenia Lifestyle.

She also confirmed there are two zoning areas on the proposed site - RU1 Primary Production and RU2 Rural Landscape.

Ingenia approached and met with SHCG before Christmas to discuss the proposal.

The public meeting will address community concerns raised from that initial contact, and the formation of a subcommittee to continue the community consultation process between both Nambucca Valley Council and Ingenia Lifestyle.

The Scotts Head Community Group wants to raise awareness regarding the proposal, and the impacts the development will have on the local community, infrastructure, services, and surrounding environment.

“Scotts Head is a small community, our infrastructure is

200 people,” said Moira Ryan, a Scotts Head Community Group representative.

Nambucca Valley Council draft minutes dated 13 January records the following.

13/22 RESOLVED: (Buchanan/Vance) “That Council make representations to the Member for Oxley, the Hon. Melinda Pavey MP and the Minister for Planning, the Hon. Anthony Roberts MP to correct the rating and contribution inequities associated with manufactured home estates and caravan parks with permanent residential accommodation whilst protecting tenants from unreasonable rent increases.”

News Of The Area spoke with Michael Coulter, Nambucca Valley Council’s General Manager, about the above resolution.

“While the resolution in question does not mention the Ingenia Proposal if adopted the changes are to cover all permanent residential accommodation within our Shire.”

“In my 16 years with Nambucca Council we have previously put these changes to the State Government, there is a significant financial loss to the council in regards to these types of developments.

“These developments do not attract the same council rating structure as standard housing owners, and the developer is not obliged to pay building

The event kicks off at 7:30 pm on Saturday 5 February 2022 and all proceeds from this night of nights will go towards keeping the Bowraville Theatre alive.

Mid North Coast Covid numbers THERE were 439 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the Mid North Coast Local Health District to 8pm Monday, 17 January 2022 – including 254 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 185 positive PCR tests*.

Sadly, Mid North Coast Health is reporting the death of a person aged in their 80s from Coffs Harbour LGA. We extend our sincere condolences to their loved ones.

Of the 185 positive PCR tests, 72 are from Port Macquarie-Hastings Local

Government Area (LGA), 49 are from Coffs Harbour LGA, 44 from Kempsey LGA, 13 from Nambucca Valley LGA and seven from Bellingen LGA. There are 61 COVID-19 cases in Mid North Coast hospitals, with three people in intensive care.

There have been 9,000 cases reported in the district since June 2021.

At our Mid North Coast Health clinics, there were 692 tests conducted on Monday.

A day prior, there were 270 new cases of COVID-19 reported from PCR tests in the Mid North Coast Local Health District to 8pm on Sunday 16 January 2022.

One hundred and six cases were from the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area (LGA), 78 cases were from Kempsey LGA, 55 cases were from Nambucca Valley LGA, 26 cases were from Coffs

ORGANISERS of major events and festivals that have been cancelled or significantly disrupted by COVID Public Health Orders will be supported by funding through the NSW Government’s Event Saver Fund.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the funding was a critical lifeline for major event organisers who have had to cancel, postpone or vary their events, providing them the financial security and certainty to plan and deliver their future events in NSW. “Major events are a key economic driver that create thousands of jobs across the state. The Event Saver Fund will ensure that organisers aren’t left high and dry as we work through this latest phase of the pandemic and sends a strong signal that the Government is here to support business,” Mr Perrottet said.

Treasurer Matt Kean said the funding was recognition of the important impact major events have on driving tourism as

well as on the broader NSW economy.

“Festivals and major events are huge drawcards and they have been significantly disrupted by the latest Omicron wave of COVID-19,” Mr Kean said.

“It is vital we provide them the support they need when their event is impacted by a Public Health Order.

“That is exactly what this funding commitment does.”

Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin said while the pandemic has had a devastating effect on artists’ ability to perform live, today’s announcement shows the Government’s strong commitment to the arts.

“Major events provide tremendous social benefits to the community, bringing us together to enjoy live performances,” Mr Franklin said.

“As we look to rebound from the effects of the past two years, this funding will help support local jobs and ensure major event organisers can plan with confidence to safely deliver their events in 2022/23.”

Major event organisers will be able to pay suppliers, staff and recover other costs where an event is cancelled or significantly disrupted as a result of public health orders imposed as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gruner and Ashton Nambucca Views, Then and Now q

ACCREDITED a ‘Master of Light’ by his peers, artist Elioth Gruner visited the Nambucca region a number of times in the 1930s and painted coastal and river scenes.

Elioth won the prestigious Wynne Prize for landscape painting seven times between 1916 and 1937.

Equally prominent in his day as an artist and administrator, Will Ashton painted Nambucca River scenes in 1934.

Will was a prolific impressionist painter well known for depicting the intensity of light in his scenes, winning the Wynne Prize three times.

He was the same age as Elioth and they likely knew each other.

Today’s Nambucca Valley Arts Council (NVAC) artists are tracking down the locations from which Elioth and Will painted their land and seascapes and will paint their versions of the same scenes as they are today for an exhibition titled ‘Gruner and Ashton Nambucca Views Then and Now’ at the Stringer Gallery opening 2 February 2022.

By Emma DARBIN YEAR 12 2021 HSC students finally received their long awaited ATARs and HSC results yesterday, with the HSC results being released four days earlier than anticipated.

The HSC results were received by students earlier than expected, with the NSW Education Standards Authority

completing the marking and processing of the 2021 HSC ahead of schedule.

The Universities Admission Centre (UAC) released ATARs to students from 9am on Thursday 20 January on the UAC website.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said 2021 HSC students were able to access their results on Thursday 20 January, rather than 24 January as originally scheduled.

“This is a great outcome for our students, who we know are keen to receive their results and finalise their plans for the year, whether that be heading to university, training or straight

Mr Wilson says he is completely independent of any political party or group, and believes strongly in compliance, the Code of Conduct and the Code of Meeting Practice.

“Don’t spend if you can’t show me how you can pay for it, avoid setting precedents, and look at the whole picture.

“As part of my community service I clean the Lions BBQs at Gordon Park each Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning.

“It is really good to see they are used so frequently.

“I would rather clean them than find them unused - the whole purpose of putting them in was to provide a service to be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike.”

Mr Wilson is a member of the ‘We're Here’ Committee.

“The aim of the Committee is to encourage transitioning Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel to settle in the Nambucca Valley.

Police On The Streets - POLICE are investigating a motor vehicle accident that occurred on 9/1/22 about 10pm on Scotts Head Rd, Scotts Head.

A 54-year-old male driver is alleged to have lost control of his vehicle and driven into a table drain, causing the vehicle to flip onto its side.

The vehicle continued to slide before being up righted when it hit the side of the road.

Members of the public assisted the driver until the arrival of emergency services.

The driver was submitted to a RBT

by Police on scene where he returned a

positive reading.

The Driver was conveyed by Ambulance to Coffs Harbour Hospital.

Police are awaiting blood test results before taking further action.

- On 8/1/22 Police were alerted to a family dispute at a South Arm address involving a 25-year-old man, a 19-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman.

Police arrested the 25-year-old man at the scene for offences related to assault.

During his arrest the accused man became violent towards Police and was later charged at Macksville Police

The accused man was released on bail and appeared before Macksville Local Court on 13/1/22.

The matter has subsequently been adjourned to Macksville Local Court on 24/3/22.

- On 8/1/22 Police were alerted to a domestic violence incident at a Nambucca Heads address.

During the incident damage was sustained to the premises.

A 34-year-old man was later arrested in the Nambucca CBD area.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station where he was later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 20/1/22.

- On 11/1/22 about 11:50am emergency services were alerted to two swimmers in distress at North Valla Beach.

A 13-year-old girl had been swimming at the beach when she became caught in a rip.

Her 51-year-old father has then entered the water to aid his daughter, however also became caught in the rip.

Both parties eventually managed to reach shore with the assistance of members of the public.

Police, Ambulance and Life Savers were on scene.

All persons involved were assessed and did not require any medical attention.

- Police are investigating a motor

vehicle accident that occurred on 8/1/22 about 6:30pm on Rodeo Dr, Tewinga.

A 59-year-old male driver is alleged to have lost control of his vehicle, left the road and collided with a tree which caused the vehicle to roll onto its roof.

The driver was trapped for a short time due to the position of the vehicle and he had sustained a head injury.

Fire & Rescue and Ambulance were also on scene.

The driver was later conveyed to Coffs Harbour Hospital for treatment.

Police are awaiting blood test results before taking any further action.

There will be four rounds of funding for this initiative.

THE majority of us are concerned about the environmental impact us humans are having on the planet however most do little or nothing about it.

Valla Beach resident Darren Squibb has literally taken to the streets in a bid to care for the environment and now many Valla Beach residents are getting behind him.

Darren can often be seen on the sides of the highway around the Nambucca Valley picking up rubbish thrown out of vehicles by thoughtless motorists.

Darren told News Of The Area, “My fixation for picking up rubbish goes back to his time as a Boy Scout when the leaders would impress upon him to leave nothing but footprints in the bush.”

Darren began his amazing clean-up work in Byron Bay and has continued it since, moving to the Nambucca area over 10 years ago.

Darren added that, “I cycle every day and you

notice the incredible volume of rubbish from your bike that you do not see from a car.”

Frustrated that local authorities would do little about the rubbish, Darren took to the roadside towing a trailer to clean up what had been thrown from car windows.

The volume of the rubbish he collects is alarming and has increased dramatically since the opening of the M1 Motorway.

As the local Marine Debris Coordinator for Sea Shepherd, Darren is also aware much of the roadside waste will eventually end up in our waterways.

Recently Darren has been able to leverage on the NSW Return and Earn program to go further in helping our precious environment.

Adolescent Nutrition matters long term

THE role of nutrition in adolescents and the effects of food choices they make are the subjects of new research written up in three papers launched by The Lancet medical journal.

Adolescence brings phenomenal growth, transforming every physiological system from the reproductive to the brain.

Adolescent growth carries implications for health through the course of life into the next generation.

Yet adolescent nutrition has remained invisible in government policies and actions, despite persisting problems related to adolescent nutrition, writes The Lancet.

Edward Frongillo,

University of South Carolina’s Director Global Health Initiatives, said, “The choices that adolescents and young adults make, or are forced to make, about their diets and nutrition will have ramifications for their lives and for that of the planet.”

Director of Knowledge Leadership at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, Lynnette M. Neufeld Evidence said, “This series unequivocally shows the danger of inaction but also that adolescents have a lot to say about why they eat what they eat, and the factors that might motivate them to change.

“We must include them as active partners in shaping local and global actions that support healthy eating.”

Wellness in Coffs Harbour’s Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Melinda Olliver, told News Of The Area, “It’s great to see the Lancet highlighting the importance of nutrition during adolescence.

“This is a stage of tremendous growth and development, and good nutrition is truly critical.

“Even more importantly, teens who have a diet rich in wholefoods tend to carry on this eating behaviour into adulthood, reducing chronic disease risk later in life.

“So, it really sets them up for life.

“Teens have increased nutritional requirements.

“However, according to AIHW in 2017-2018, only around 50% of teens aged 1524 years were meeting their

daily fruit requirements and only 2-3% were meeting their vegetable requirements.

“Almost half (40%) of girls aged 14–18 had inadequate iron, and 90% were not meeting their calcium requirements.

“So, what can we do?

“Evidence is showing us a family approach to mealtimes is really important.

“Teenagers who eat with other family members tend to have a healthier diet, and reduced risk of obesity.

“Structured mealtimes, making meals together and having a positive mealtime environment are all linked with lower rates of disordered eating in adolescents, and increased diversity.

“I find a focus on benefits teens will see now, is also important.

“Rather than discussing that a diet rich in wholefoods can reduce chronic disease risk, focusing on the benefits it will have on their skin, their energy levels, their sports performance and their mental health, can be more of a motivator for teens.

“Choosing and enjoying a

ANYONE who tests positive using a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) will now be required to register their result with Service NSW. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the new registration process was an important part of managing the pandemic.

“NSW residents can register their result with just a few clicks on the Service NSW website or by

using the Service NSW app,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Registering your RAT result enables NSW Health to provide you with advice on self-isolation and managing COVID-19 symptoms at home, to connect high risk people to clinical care services and to help inform the ongoing public health response.”

Most people do not need a PCR test to confirm they are positive for COVID-19.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the reporting of a positive RAT will be required under a public health order.

“Ensuring individuals are connected to the appropriate public health advice and keeping a watch on trends is the prime purpose,” Mr Hazzard said.

If you are under 65 years of age, have had two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, do

not suffer from any chronic health conditions and are not pregnant, you may be able to safely manage COVID-19 at home.

Customer Service and Digital Government Minister Victor Dominello said privacy would be at the forefront of this new feature.

“This technology has been built with trust and security at its core. Service NSW will send the information directly

to NSW Health, it isn’t shared with any third parties, and is then deleted from Service NSW records within days,” Mr Dominello said.

“There are more than seven million Service NSW account holders but we’re also committed to making this process inclusive for those without that access.

“Those who need assistance can contact Service NSW on 13 77 88.”

Less Beers Sold Due To COVID-19 At Pubs And Clubs

IT’S no surprise that the hospitality industry has been hard hit by COVID-19.

However, the latest measure of the downturn is a rather interesting one.

Simply put, we aren’t going to the local for a cold one.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) figures for draught beer sales in the first quarter (JulySeptember) of the 2021-22 tax year have shown that pubs and clubs sold 40 million fewer pints of beer in July-September 2021 than they did for the same period in 2019, before

the pandemic hit.

That’s a massive drop of over 50 percent in beer sales for struggling venues, a clear illustration of the true devastating impact of the pandemic on Australia’s hospitality sector.

After a horror year in 2020 where pubs and clubs lost over $1 billion in beer sales due to lockdowns and other restrictions these latest figures from the ATO show that losses for 2021 could well exceed this.

The ATO recorded 903,982 litres of alcohol as having been served in beers over the counter in July-September

2021 compared to 1,993,027 litres during the same period in 2019.

John Preston, Chief Executive of the Brewers Association of Australia, said, “These figures show that the damage to our pubs and clubs from the pandemic actually worsened last year.

“On average beer sales are around 70 percent of alcohol sales volumes in licensed premises and a drop of this severity has hit pubs and clubs incredibly hard.

“We are calling for the Federal Government to use the forthcoming Federal Budget

to reduce Australia’s fourth highest beer tax in the world to give pubs and clubs a fighting chance.

“We are very concerned that on 1 February the Australian Government will hit Australian beer drinkers with one of the biggest beer tax increases in more than a decade – it’s not right and it’s not sustainable.

“Other countries have been reducing their tax on draught beer to give pubs and beer drinkers a break.”

$20 million to get rid of pests and weeds q Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud announcing the funding on Tuesday.

ON-GROUND management of problematic pests and weeds will see a significant boost through an Australian Government investment of $20 million, matched dollar for dollar by state and territory governments to maximise impact and deliver collaborative reduction and prevention activities across the country.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud and Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said pest animals and weeds pose a significant threat to Australia’s primary

production, environment and biodiversity.

“Pests and weeds are a huge and growing problem for Australia’s agriculture and environment,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Projects will reduce the overall burden of pests and weeds on-ground through activities such as coordinated control, destruction and removal, including trapping, baiting and culling along with biological control release.

“They will target nationally significant pest and weed species, such as feral deer, feral pigs, cats, foxes, rabbits, wild dogs and a range of invasive weeds across identified hot spots.

“I welcome the commitment from my state and territory colleagues to coinvest with us to address this significant issue.

Minister Ley said the funding would help better protect Australia’s unique environment from invasive plants and animals, as well as supporting the new Threatened Species Strategy.

“A reduction of pest animals and weeds will lead to more productive and profitable industries, and benefit native wildlife and the environment, including nature-based tourism industries and communities."

Fish Frame Research

THE Department of Primary Industries (DPI) are calling on anglers to donate their fish frames.

The fish frames from recreational fishers are required to help with the monitoring of Mulloway, Yellowtail Kingfish, Snapper, Dusky Flathead, Blue Spotted Flathead, Pearl Perch Spanish or Spotted Mackerel.

A DPI spokesperson stated, “We don't just want huge trophy fish, the little ones are just as important as the big ones.

“All legal length frames are wanted and will help with this important work.

“Data collected by this program will contribute toward ensuring continued quality recreational fishing opportunities for your favourite species into the future.”

This combined data details how many fish there are of each age in the stock, which helps evaluate the health of the species.

By collecting this data over time DPI can also see how the structure of fish populations in NSW may be changing.

“For officials, they will be required to take a Rapid Antigen Test each morning prior to coming on-site, and all briefings and gatherings will be outdoors.

“Importantly, there are also contingency plans in place should any key personnel develop symptoms during the event, with deputies on hand to replace them in the lead up or during competition."

At my brother's wedding, our mother insisted on leaving my new boyfriend out of all the professional photos because she doubts the relationship will last.

It was humiliating and a bad start to what he and I feel will be a long relationship.

I couldn't say anything as I didn't want to ruin my brother's wedding, but I'm hurt.

Caveats and solemn form grants WENDY, aged 88, makes a will leaving her whole estate to her niece, Alice.

At the age of 95, Wendy, with the assistance of her other niece Jane, puts her house on the market, with a view to moving into a nursing home.

Wendy retains a new solicitor for the purposes of the sale at the recommendation of her real estate agent.

Wendy’s house is sold for $2 million and she moves into a nursing home.

After a short stay in hospital, Wendy makes a new will, with her new lawyer, leaving her whole estate to Jane.

A few years later, Wendy passes away and when Alice discovers that a new will has been made, leaving her out, she files a caveat in the Probate Registry and commences action in the Supreme Court, claiming that Wendy lacked the capacity to make a new will.

Alice subpoenas the solicitor’s file notes, which were unable to be located.

However, evidence is produced that Jane provided the solicitor with a draft will and hand-written notes regarding Wendy’s alleged wishes.

The solicitor is cross-examined at trial and the judge accepts that there was no reason to believe that the documents had been knowingly destroyed.

The solicitor also gives affidavit evidence that Wendy executed her new will in the presence of only the solicitor and his secretary and she was able to accurately and completely recite her details and describe the nature of her assets.

After a five-day hearing, during which other ‘lay’ witnesses gave evidence and expert medical evidence was adduced regarding capacity, the Court ultimately found that Wendy’s last Will was valid and that Jane was entitled to the whole of her estate under a grant of probate in ‘solemn form’.

The total legal costs exceeded $400,000.

Police to record Indigenous status

The NSW Police Force has introduced these changes to help improve data and create a fairer justice system.

Introduced on Thursday 13 January, it is now mandatory for police to ask all victims and people-of-interest if they identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and record the status in the police system WebCOPs. The Art Scene is Alive and Well OPINION IT’S been a difficult year for many of us due to the Covid-19 lockdowns, but the sales of artworks across the Nambucca region has been a success story.

The reduction in international travel has resulted in a boom for local tourism and gallery sales have risen to some extent in our immediate area.

In Nambucca Heads, the Stringer Art Gallery on Ridge Street is now sharing its location with Nambucca Library and this arrangement is set to continue until the library renovation is complete, which is estimated to be August 2022.

The exhibitions in the gallery change on a regular basis so there is always something different to see.

Each month the gallery has a dedicated display of one particular artist’s work.

“This is the Artist of the Month display,” said Marlene Griffin.

“To keep things lively we also have a ‘Features Exhibition‘ which changes regularly.

“Artists are presented with a title and they paint a work based on this theme.”

The theme for January is ‘Colours of Summer’.

‘How does the gallery pay its way?’ is a question often asked by visitors.

“When an artwork is sold in the Stringer Gallery a percentage commission is deducted from the price of the work and this is then paid into the funds of The Nambucca Valley Arts Council,” Marlene said.

“This is not a great sum at the end of each year but does help to keep the gallery up and running.

“The sales of art works that help to keep galleries open and inviting to residents and to visiting tourists.

“Sales of paintings also help our artists to continue their art journey by funding their art materials and helping to cover the cost of framing.

“This all helps both artists and the art loving community.”

Marlene said thanks and appreciation are due to Nambucca Valley Council for the recent installation of a new lighting system for gallery paintings and air conditioning facilities in the gallery.

“An art gallery is a cultural attraction which helps to put us on the tourist map.

“However it is support from the local community which in the long term keeps the gallery up and running.

“So do try to find time to visit the gallery and enjoy the works on show.”

Gallery opening times are 10 am to 3.00pm on weekdays and Saturday mornings from 9.30 am until noon.

Based on the novels of James Herriott about a young vet in the 1930s working in the Yorkshire Dales, the books are so popular that they have been in print since their debut in the 1970s. In “You’ve Got to Dream”, Herriott discovers that treating the animals is as much about treating their owners. Featuring cute animals, idyllic scenery, and lighthearted stories, its well-timed fare.

The haka is New Zealand’s hugely respected and powerful war dance often performed as a pre-game ceremony at sporting matches.

It is electric, symbolic and a force to be reckoned with.

Since 2012, a group of Indigenous Australian NRL players have been developing their own response to the haka that includes movements that reflect cultural symbols – the clan, the warrior and the spear. In this documentary, we follow the players as they try to convince high-profile players to join in so the dance can be performed at The Vigil, the Survival Day ceremony held at the Barangaroo headland.

SURF Life Saving clubs from regional NSW are finalising their training with the 2022 Oakberry Acai NSW Country Championships just around the corner, set to run from January 28-30 at the idyllic Cape Hawke SLSC on the state’s Lower North Coast.

Running for the first time since 2020 after COVID-19 unfortunately brought about the cancellation of last year's event, clubs outside the Newcastle-to-Illawarra catchment will converge on Cape Hawke on the last weekend in January to compete across a variety of surf sport events.

The Oakberry Acai NSW Country Championships is second only to the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships in size, with well in excess of 1,000 competitors, 200 officials and around 4,000 spectators expected across the three days of competition.

this morning, Surf Life Saving NSW Director of Surf Sports, Don van Keimpema OAM believed the excitement for the reintroduction of the event – the first time regional-based clubs have had a chance to compete at an event of this size in two years – was palpable.

“It’s a fantastic time of year – summer is well and truly here,” he said.

“The Oakberry Acai Country Championships is an important showcase for our regional members to compete, there are so many friendly rivalries between clubs but the really special thing is that it’s done in such a safe and fun way.

“We are excited to be at Cape Hawke this year, it’s a tremendous location that’s quite central in terms of being accessible to our competing clubs, from Broulee Surfers in the south all the way up to Cudgen Headland in the north.
