By Mick BIRTLES ONE of the areas in our community which has been greatly affected by aspects of the pandemic such as lockdowns and travel restrictions has been the arts and entertainment sector.

The Australia Institute has recently published research detailing the impact on the sector as being devastating.

Similarly, findings released by the Australian National University earlier this year points out that approximately 2.3 million less people volunteered in April 2021 when compared with late 2019.

Organisations in the arts and entertainments sector that are completely reliant on volunteers for their workforce face a double dilemma.

11th day of November, the 11th month, we are encouraged to observe one minute of silence to reflect and remember.

This occurred across the Nambucca Valley on Thursday 11 November.

The day was forecast to be hot and stormy, conditions that are not comfortable for most.

However, more than 70 community members ventured to the Nambucca Heads cenotaph to remember.

Mr Mick Birtles, Nambucca Heads sub-Branch President and MC for the service, commented, “The Vice President of the Nambucca Heads RSL sub-Branch, Mr Rob Freebairn, delivered a moving and poignant address where he reminded us of the need to look after those that return from war.”

In his address at the service Mr Freebairn said, “Often the hardest thing for service men or women to face when they return home is that most people don’t seem to know or care that there is a war going on.”

“It is a time set aside by the nation, and most of the Commonwealth, to demonstrate that the fallen and their families are not forgotten, that we will indeed remember them.

However it is not only about remembering the fallen, Mr Birtles says.

“I consider that, in addition to remembering them, what we owe the fallen is to care for their mates who did not fall.”

The School Captains from

Nambucca Heads High School, Marli Bateman and Will McKinney, laid a wreath from Nambucca High School for the service.

This was their first official duty as newly elected School

Captains.

News Of The Area asked Ms Bateman how she felt laying the wreath, she said, “I felt extremely proud to be able to represent our school at such an important event.”

Macksville Remembrance Day, Lest We Forget

ON November 11 local residents of Macksville and surrounds came together at the cenotaph on River Street to remember those Australians who gave the ultimate sacrifice not only in World War One, but in all wars to follow.

“Australia has been involved in fighting wars during the 18th,19th and 20th century,” Gary McKay said.

“The Boer War, World War 1, World War 2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and some 45 peacekeeping operations throughout the world.

“We have lost generations of young men and women in these conflicts,” he added.

“We honour those who have died for us and especially remember their families who were left to develop our country into what it is today,” Mr McKay said.

In Mr McKay’s closing address to the audience of the Macksville Remembrance Day service he said,

“We are proud to stand before this memorial and take the time to remember our friends and families and to reflect on where we are now.

“We remember those sacrifices that were made to ensure we can have the freedom we enjoy today.

“War is not glorious nor pretty.

“We will remember them.

“Lest we forget.

“I can assure you that, we shall not forget.”

The Macksville RSL sub-Branch would also like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Glenn and Leonie Humphreys and all others involved in the construction and donation of the ‘War Animals Memorial’ now taking pride of place near the cenotaph in Macksville.

Iconic Bowraville Theatre calls for volunteers to help bring live entertainment back to the Nambucca Valley

FROM Page 1 The iconic Bowraville Theatre is one such organisation.

In April this year it looked like the Bowraville Theatre was well and truly back in business with a spectacular reopening concert headlined by country music star Warren H Williams and a lineup of very talented Gumbaynggirr artists.

This was soon followed by the Koori Comedy Showcase where the theatre played host to Australia’s best indigenous

comedians.

Then successive lockdowns saw this grand old theatre forced to close its doors once more.

This week the Secretary of the Bowraville Arts Council, Mrs Dale Hawkins, spoke to News Of The Area and stated, “The show must go on.”

Setting their sights on being able to reopen again early in 2022, the Theatre is putting out a call for volunteers who would like to get involved with keeping the unique community resource alive.

“We are completely volunteer

operated and our skill base has been devastated by the long periods of lockdown,” Dale said.

“We have seen a reduction in the numbers of our older volunteers due to COVID fears,” she added.

The theatre exists to benefit the Nambucca Valley and beyond and the Bowraville Arts Council are optimistic people in the district with a love for the performing arts will join other volunteers in filling the many roles required to reopen the theatre in the new year.

They are looking for volunteers across a range of skill sets as diverse as projectionists, sound and lighting, cafe operation, box office, ushers and stage hands.

“We provide training for volunteers but would also welcome those with existing skills,” Dale said.

Peter Sobey running for Council

PETER Sobey has lived in the Nambucca Valley for the best part of the last 22 years, and he loves the community and land on which he lives.

He plays a very active role in the community and is now running for Council in the upcoming elections.

Mr Sobey is currently the President and Treasurer of the Valla Beach Community Association, a member of the Nambucca Valley Council's Clean Energy Committee, and an Executive of the Nambucca Heads Men’s Shed.

Mr Sobey is well informed about environmental issues and is passionate about protecting it.

If he is elected to Council he would aim to ensure that Council works towards supporting more renewable energy solutions in the Valley.

SMALL HERITAGE GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR HERITAGE PROPERTIES

Nambucca Valley Council is looking for property owners and managers who would like financial assistance from Council and the NSW Government to carry out conservation and maintenance work on their heritage properties.

Through assistance from the NSW Government, Council is able to offer dollar for dollar funding for works that will help preserve our important heritage places. Successful applicants will receive up to $3,500 toward their project.

Applications are being called for suitable projects on heritage properties, with the first priority being those listed in the Nambucca Local Environmental Plan 2010. However, properties that are not listed will still be able to apply.

This round of funding must be spent and accounted for before the end of April 2022, so potential applicants are urged to visit Council’s website today to obtain an application form or contact Lisa Hall on 6568 0228 or lisa.hall@nambucca.nsw.gov.au Applications close Friday 3 December 2021.

Mr Sobey said, “The nature of what we are facing in the very near future in climate change is huge.

“We can make changes and invest in new ways of doing things, like using solar power and using electric cars.”

The Clean Energy Committee, of which Mr Sobey is a member, has succeeded already in implementing the installation of solar panels on the Council building and also installing two electric vehicle chargers.

The installation of the panels on Council is not only environmentally sustainable, said Mr Sobey, “It also saves money that can be used for other things in the community.”

As part of the People’s Power Renewable Energy Cooperative, Mr Sobey is helping to investigate renewable energy opportunities that can be accessible to people that may not be otherwise able to access solar options.

This includes people in rentals and lower income earners.

Mr Sobey explains that this would be an investment in community battery options, which are being developed in Australia.

When these become available, according to Mr Sobey, Council can play a major role in ensuring that it becomes a reality in the Valley.

Working and communicating with the Gumbaynggirr community would be a priority for Mr Sobey if elected.

Mr Sobey, in consultation with the Gumbaynggirr, would like to see more recognition of language in the renaming or dual naming of locations, and move towards Council becoming more involved in events such as Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week.

If elected he would like to canvas the opportunity for the Council to bring parties together to set up the NSW Justice Reinvestment Strategy, like that in Dubbo, which sees communities save money by redirecting money spent on incarceration and instead investing it in early intervention, crime prevention and diversion strategies.

In terms of development in the Valley, Mr Sobey said, “I am not anti-development at all, but I do think that it needs to be done with a considered approach.

“We can walk out onto Valla Beach, and see a view without any human habitation.

“You can’t find that in many places in Australia.

“I do think you need to draw the line somewhere or else we will lose it all.”

Cr David Jones running for second term

IN 1970, Joni Mitchell sang, "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

50 years later, Councillor David Jones believes that we may have to guard against overdevelopment in Nambucca.

Cr Jones’s campaign has centered around spending many hours in the heart of Nambucca Heads talking to people and recording their ideas and thoughts and then posting them on the window of a shop in Bowra Street, Nambucca Heads.

What Cr Jones has discovered in talking with locals is that the main issues of interest are “basic services, more funding for roads, sealing country roads, maintaining footpaths,

playgrounds and public toilets”.

“These may seem mundane but they are what are important to us,” he said.

Cr Jones interacts with members of the community frequently and has found that people don’t like unnecessary changes that may have a negative impact on the Valley.

"I drive three days a week for Community Transport, people chat and again people say that they enjoy the way things are, change will happen but we need to make sure we don't ruin the very thing we love about the Valley.”

For Cr Jones, informed by those he has spoken to in the community, overdevelopment is a concern.

“The election could be a turning point.

“I see myself as neither pro nor anti development,

but I fear that our balance could be upset if we allow unfettered and overbearing development.

"I have been in Nambucca for ten years and on Council for five, my other council experience was one term on the Bendigo Council, two years of which were as Mayor."

News Of The Area asked Cr Jones why he and his family moved to Nambucca from Victoria 10 years ago.

"We moved to Nambucca and like so many, moved here for the lifestyle and the peace and quiet.

“We have a wonderful community, great natural beauty and the next Council must wisely navigate the years ahead.

In terms of his role in Council Cr Jones said, “I hope to have a balancing influence,

and in fact, if I had to choose between development or people I'll say straight up, we need to put our people first.”

lots of connectedness and a great volunteer and giving culture.

“I'd be thrilled to serve for another three years."

Martin Ballangarry is running again for Council

NAMBUCCA Valley Councillor Martin Ballangarry is a man of experience, with 18 years of being on Council behind him.

One of these years was spent as Deputy Mayor.

This experience is combined with a myriad of other commitments that Cr Ballangarry is passionately involved in.

All of these show his dedication and commitment to the health and wellbeing of

everyone in the community.

Cr Ballangarry has recently been appointed (acting) President of the Local Government Aboriginal Network (LGAN), prior to this he was Deputy President.

The LGAN has conferences which bring together Aboriginal Councillors from across NSW to share best practice, initiatives and programs.

News Of The Area asked Cr Ballangarry what he has learned over the years as Councillor, and how this will help him if he enters another term.

“My experience on Council has taught me a lot about how Local Government operates, and with this I can help new Councillors learn as well and continue to work for the best outcomes for all of the Valley.”

As the first Gumbaynggirr community member to ever be elected to Nambucca Valley Council, Cr Ballangarry said he has worked hard to listen to community

concerns.

He wants to improve the recognition and support of Gumbaynggirr people and culture in what the Council does.

“There is a Reconciliation Plan in Council, and it needs to be looked at and acted on.

“This is something that I will work on if I serve another term.”

If re-elected, Cr Ballangarry said he will look at employment strategies.

“I am concerned about the lack of employment opportunities in the Valley for everyone in the community.

“We have to work

to provide employment opportunities in the town.”

Cr Ballangarry believes in improving the physical and mental health of people in the Nambucca Valley.

He is supportive of programs that support youth and provide them with opportunities to learn and develop healthy lifestyles and habits.

“I see a lot of people with low-self esteem,” he said.

“They often don’t know how to apply for a job because they’re not feeling good about themselves.

“Council needs to support programs that help with education and training.”

DRUG, alcohol and mental health treatment organisation The Buttery is offering a free four-week nonresidential program to assist people with drug and alcohol problems.

The online program commences on Monday 22 November and includes aftercare services for participants. CORE is being offered to participants in

the Mid North Coast and Far North Coast, NSW. The Community Rehab program (CORE) is an evidence-based model of intensive rehabilitation which has revolutionised the practice of addiction treatment.

The CORE program provides participants with group and individual therapy and addresses family and

relationship issues.

The program also examines neurosciences and the addicted brain and offers skills to manage distressing feelings and emotions.

Furthermore, participants reduce social isolation and reconnect to a sense of belonging and purpose in their life. Many people who would benefit from a longterm stay at The Buttery

are unable to do so due to personal circumstances, such as parenting or carer responsibilities.

CORE is delivered online during school hours from 9.15 am to 1.00 pm from Monday to Thursday over four weeks. CORE Program Coordinator, Tanya Magnay, said, “This concept is not only more cost-effective than residential rehab, it is flexible

enough to help people who would never have been able to put their family commitments on hold to seek intensive rehab.

“As it is an online program, people can take part from their home or another convenient location.

“Additionally, participants who would like to maintain their pharmacotherapy medication and abstain from

other substance use are suitable to attend the core program.”

Blood Donors Needed ASAP

By Sandra MOON CANCELLATIONS and no shows have been on the rise for blood donations.

To meet demand Lifeblood now needs an extra 3000 donors over the next fourteen days.

Lifeblood’s call out is urgent and they remind people to please keep their appointments to ensure their life saving work.

The lifting of lockdowns in New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT has resulted in many roadside traumas.

Police have reported a spike in road trauma.

Surgeries have also

recommenced with the lifting of lockdown and the urgency for increased blood stocks is immediate.

Lifeblood’s Executive Director of Donor Services, Cath Stone, said half of all blood donation appointments were not being attended, while hospital demand was at its highest point in a decade.

“Our donors have shown us incredible support over the last two years, however as life moves to COVID-normal, it’s important that people continue to donate to help ensure hospitals can continue to treat patients,” she said.

Lifeblood is asking people to make saving lives part of their new normal.

“There is no alternative for patients in need of blood and we’d like to remind donors,

and anyone who has thought about becoming a donor, just how critical they are,” she added.

In particular, Lifeblood’s reserves of O Negative blood are being challenged, with the number of O Negative donors falling during the pandemic despite increased hospital demand.

O Negative is the universal blood type and can be given to anyone in an emergency like those involved in road accidents, when there simply isn’t time to find out their blood type.

Ms Stone said, “Only nine per cent of Australians have O Negative blood, but it makes up sixteen percent of orders from hospitals because it saves lives in emergencies.

“We currently have one

Congratulations to the 2022 NSW Australians of the Year THE 2022 NSW Australians of the Year have been announced at a ceremony at Luna Park, Sydney on Monday evening.

Premier Dominic Perrottet congratulated Professor Veena Sahajwalla, the 2022 NSW Australian of the Year, and NSW’s three other inspirational recipients in the categories of NSW Senior Australian, Young Australian and Local Hero.

“Each of the NSW recipients have been nominated due to their impact and making real life differences to the community in a range of fields.

“From instrumental roles in science and engineering,

founding social, environmental and life-saving initiatives.

“All are selfless in their dedication, and their individual stories remind us all that we have the power to help others, to bring about real change and to improve the lives of many in the community.”

The NSW Australian of the Year, Professor Veena Sahajwalla is the founding director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology at the University of New South Wales and is renowned for pioneering the hightemperature transformation of waste – turning it into a new generation of green materials and products.

Veena is most well known

for her invention of Polymer Injection Technology, or ‘Green Steel’.

President of the Islamic Women’s Welfare Association (IWWA), 72-year-old Abla Kadous is the NSW Senior Australian of the Year.

Abla helped establish the country’s first welfare service for muslim women after moving to Australia from Egypt.

IWWA offers antidiscrimination forums, schoolreadiness programs, youth camps, cooking classes and also provides food and other essentials to people in need.

Her generosity has seen her volunteering for more than 35 years while also raising her five children and overcoming

Environment Minister Matt Kean said the training will help improve survival rates for injured wildlife.

“We were all devastated by the images of burnt and injured wildlife during the black summer bushfires,” Matt said.

“Volunteer wildlife rehabilitators were absolutely invaluable during the bushfire crisis – rescuing and caring for around 90,000 injured animals as the state battled our worst ever bushfires.”

“This training will ensure our frontline heroes have the tools to assess and report injured wildlife, as well as apply basic first aid and transfer injured animals off the fireground to vets and our army of volunteer wildlife rehabilitators, if safe to do so.”

Its clinics treat many communicable and noncommunicable illnesses and detect conditions that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Shanna Whan, who is the founder and CEO of Sober in the Country, is the NSW Local

Hero.

After almost losing her own life to alcohol addiction, Shanna established a onewoman grassroots campaign creating radical social impact and change around how people discuss and use alcohol in rural Australia.

Shanna has dedicated her life since 2015 to saving lives across the country, first as a volunteer to help others locally, and now as the founder of the national charity Sober in the Country.

NSW’s four recipients will join those from other states and territories for the national awards ceremony in Canberra on 25 January 2022.

Wildlife first response training for firefighters

WILDLIFE first response training for NSW firefighters is being rolled out to help wildlife impacted by bushfires under a new NSW Government initiative.

Following the devastating 2019-20 bushfire season, the NSW Bushfire Inquiry acknowledged the need for an increased focus on wildlife response in bushfires and other natural disasters.

Through the Environmental Trust, the NSW Government is funding the delivery of Recommendation 53 of the NSW Bushfire Inquiry, which proposes that the government develop and implement a policy for injured wildlife response, including guidance for firefighters on handling injured wildlife.

“The training will help firefighters to assist any injured wildlife they see when fighting a fire, if it is

TRAINEE volunteer firefighters from RFS Brigades across the Nambucca and Macleay Valleys came together in Macksville recently to complete their Bush Firefighter (BF) assessment.

“For the last few months, thirteen Nambucca Valley volunteers from Valla, Valla Beach, Gumma, North Macksville, Girralong, Warrell Creek and Utungun Brigades have been working hard to complete a range of theory and practical exercises ahead of their weekend assessment,” Christian Yanni, Operational Officer, Lower North Coast, NSW Rural Fire Service told News Of The Area.

“This nationally recognised training, delivered by fellow Brigade volunteers, is designed to

complete this important training at their own pace with their local Brigade, prior to attending a District assessment day.

“During the assessment, trainees were tested on a range of practical skills which

included communicating via two-way radio, using fire hoses and operating fire fighting pumps.”

The Lower North Coast RFS District, which covers the Kempsey Shire and Nambucca Valley Local

Government Areas, consists of thirty firefighting brigades and four operational support units, who provide support to the community during times of fire and emergencies.

Mick is also a photographer and says, “Supporting my writing with images really helps to tell the story.

“I now photograph and write about the performing arts, sport, Australian wildlife and a broad range of community based organisations and events,” he told News Of The Area.

Christmas beetles offer many fond memories for community members, an indicator that summer was here and there was usually some relaxation time owed.

Ted Lourey, local Nambucca resident, reminded News Of The Area, “Remember years ago, when you sat out at night, around Christmas, the lights constantly were bombarded by beetles?”

People across Australia may have observed that they have not sighted the beetle as much, or perhaps not at all.

Mr Lourey said, “Unfortunately there has not been a proper study to know if numbers are decreasing, but anecdotal evidence across the country indicates that there is a decline.”

BOWRAVILLE Community Preschool is one of around fifty eligible early childhood education services in NSW that will receive grant funding to provide Aboriginal children and families with additional support to participate in 600 hours of quality early childhood education in the two years prior to school.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said, “Participation in early childhood education is fundamental to ensure children have the best possible start to their educational journeys.

“This is about making sure that Aboriginal children and their families are supported and have easy access to quality early learning.”

Breast cancer patients to get Covid booster earlier WOMEN and men with breast cancer that are being treated with chemotherapy, hormone therapy or radiotherapy can receive their Covid-19 booster shot earlier than the general population.

Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and the Federal Government are this week urging women and men with breast cancer to get their third COVID vaccine dose as soon as they are eligible to provide them with maximum protection against coronavirus.

Anyone on active treatment with chemotherapy, hormone therapy or

radiotherapy can receive a third vaccine two months after their second vaccination, unlike the general population who must wait six months.

This is in response to the fact that cancer treatment compromises the immune system, which can result in severe complications if a person contracts COVID-19.

Breast Cancer Network CEO Kirsten Pilatti said now that COVID-19 is circulating in the community the booster shot was essential for the vulnerable.

“If you have breast cancer a third vaccine is not an optional extra, it is as important as the

first and second doses,” Ms Pilatti said.

“We know that those who are immunocompromised may not respond as well to the vaccines resulting in a weaker defence against COVID -19.”

Federal Health and Aged Care Minister Greg Hunt said nearly half a million Australians are now eligible for their booster dose.

“Two doses provide excellent protection against COVID-19 and a third dose will ensure longer and greater protection,” Mr Hunt said.

"The medical

experts recommend that people who are severely immunocompromised should receive a third dose.

“I encourage all those who are eligible to speak to their medical professional, especially if your health or the health of a loved one is compromised.”

It is recommended that the third vaccine be an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) regardless of what brand the first two doses were.

Individuals should contact their health professional with any concerns or call BCNA’s Helpline on 1800 500 258.

These VR headsets have bought a whole new level of education for Bowraville Central School as this new form

of engagement with students is filling in educational gaps and adding to emotional experience that otherwise wouldn’t be available to these students.

Mrs Rushton has since been encouraged to apply for the ‘Avantis World Global Teachers Scholarship’ and excitingly she has secured it.

“To apply for the ‘Avantis Global teachers Scholarship’ was a considerable thought process,” she said.

“I was about to dive into the new world technology of virtual reality.”

Bringing the world to BCS IN term three this year Bowraville Central School (BCS) librarian Mrs Helen Rushton acquired eight virtual reality (VR) headsets for the school.

This enabled the students from Kindergarten to Year 12 to make use of the headsets to bring safe learning to any and all areas of study.

The students can now undertake endless experiences, such as swimming with sharks, using these headsets without the risk of being harmed or Covid-19 getting in the way.

The adventures already carried out by the students at BCS have been: investigating volcanoes, looking for crabs in rock pools, investigating and holding 3D Dinosaurs and volcano cut outs in their hands as well as building 3D scenes that represent a scene from a film study.

When Kindergarten student Skylah was asked what it was like to visit a rockpool, she said, “It was like we were really swimming!”

As a librarian, Mrs Rushton loves to tell stories, bringing new adventures and experiences to the children of BCS. “This was one way I could not only bring engagement with students, I could also involve them in the constructing of their own stories, connecting and sharing past and present to our global world.

scholarship, and at the end of the month I’d been accepted as one of one hundred ‘Global Avantis World Ambassadors’ with a £1200 (pound) scholarship over three years.

“I will be involved in developing programs and being a mentor in the use of virtual reality and class VR technology.”

Mrs Rushton’s first global introduction meeting was held at 8pm in the evening where she was joined by their leader John and twelve other teachers from America, South Africa, England, Ireland, Australia and Sweden.

As their communications board grows there will be teachers from Greece, Nigeria and Spain to join them.

“Talking to these educators regarding technological ideas of ‘where to next?’ has been extraordinary,” Helen explained.

“To hear a teacher from Sussex, England request resources for teaching the Australian novel ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ was pretty amazing,” she added excitedly.

“This scholarship will bring the global world a little closer for those in the Bowraville Central School community.”

Open House Artisans Exhibition at Faringdon Village

NAMBUCCA artist Freya Paton is turning 80 years young in December.

To celebrate this milestone, Freya is planning an Open House Artisans Exhibition at Faringdon Village, Nambucca Heads.

There will be 16 artisans displaying their works over the two-day exhibition.

Freya has been painting since 1976, and attended the first art course offered at the Macksville TAFE. Freya said, “After I finished with TAFE, I completed a fouryear correspondence course with East Sydney Technical College in the 1980s.

“I’ve always sewn and in

1989 I discovered free machine embroidery at Camp Creative.

“I then completed a full-time Advanced Certificate in Fashion Technology at Coffs Harbour TAFE in 1991.”

For many years Freya tutored workshops in the Macleay, Nambucca and Coffs Harbour regions.

“There will be weavings, glass art, pottery, woodwork, and jewellery on display,” said Freya Paton.

Exhibiting artists will include local painters Lynne Greentrees and Anne Wilson, both members of the Nambucca Valley Art Group.

Sue Colman and Denise Delaney are retired art teachers and potters.

Virginia Whitehead and Eugene Martinio are eclectic artists and have recently exhibited at the Macleay Valley Gallery.

Susanne Sprattling is a talented glass artist, and Sue Harvey is a well-known abstract artist and tutor.

Ray Snooke and Terry Summers are woodworkers, Jo Riddle creates jewellery, and Wilma Devlin is a sculptural textile artist.

“The works will be on sale, and each artist will donate a piece of their work for free raffles held over the weekend,” said Freya.

There will be creative projects for big and little kids.

“I love art and I love being a member of the Gypsy’s Art Group in Toormina,” said Freya.

Freya’s 80th Birthday Exhibition is on 4 and 5 December at 123 Farringdon Village Nambucca Heads, situated in Farringdon Close, behind the Nambucca Cinema from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm each day.

Authors reunite after months of Covid restrictions

AUTHORS from the Mid North Coast come together every month to conduct writers workshops in Macksville.

Authors travel to this central point from Coffs Harbour, Nambucca Heads, South West Rocks, Kempsey, Port Macquarie and Newcastle.

“It is a time where fellow authors can get together and discuss their craft,” international author Fiona

McArthur told News Of The Area.

“It has been especially hard lately due to so many lockdowns and Covid restrictions,” Fiona added.

“We have really missed our workshops.”

It has been four months since the last workshop was held in Macksville, due to Covid lockdowns and restrictions.

When this group of Australian authors get together it is an afternoon of structured

networking.

With a different author presenting each month, the networking workshops tackle the many different areas of professional writing.

These areas include marketing, self-publishing, traditional publishing, audio books, editing, platforms for selling books, plot writing, character development, time management skills, as well as programs to help writers plot and organise stories and

Saving Surfers’ Lives A NEW fleet of drones will be deployed to help prevent shark attacks with custom first-aid kits and technology rolled out to surf clubs up and down the NSW coast as part of a new strategy to help save lives.

In an Australian-first, the NSW Government will partner with Surfing NSW to deliver shark attack specific first-aid training, life-saving technology and custom first aid kits to more than 160 board rider clubs and surf schools across the coast.

As part of the shark incident response program, up to 20 drones deployed to patrol surf events.

Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said Surfing NSW would receive $500,000 in funding to roll-out the revolutionary strategy.

“Sadly, most recent shark attack victims have been

Virgin Flights Return VIRGIN Australia recommenced flights last week to Coffs Harbour Airport.

The first flight to touch down was VA1161 from Sydney at 8:20am on November 11.

The return occurs as New South Wales eases COVID travel restrictions and many pent-up metropolitan travellers revel in their newfound freedoms.

Virgin Australia will run services at least daily, with up to eleven flights a week between Sydney and

NRL blockbuster returns to the Coffs Coast - Sharks v Titans q

By David WIGLEY NRL ACTION will return to the C.ex Coffs International Stadium on Saturday 18 June when the Cronulla Sharks take on the Gold Coast Titans.

The game is a repeat of last season's fixture, where a full house lapped up a thrilling seven try match.

In the last fixture, Brian Kelly opened the scoring for the Titans but that sent the Sharks into a feeding frenzy as they chewed up the Titans defence with six unanswered tries to romp home 38-10.

David Fifita was a crowd favourite and the 107kg, 21-year-old will be looking to continue his 2021 form of 17 tries from 22 appearances into 2022.

Jayden Campbell was part of the training squad that visited Coffs and has since burst onto the scene scoring five tries in seven matches with his electric pace.

New Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon has strengthened the squad with the addition of Melbourne Storm fullback Nicho Hynes and there’s big hometown interest from Shark’s new signing Locky Miller from Coffs Harbour.

The former Sawtell Panthers captain and SCU Marlins half-back signed a two year deal with the Sharks in September after he returned from the Tokyo Olympics where he scored three tries for Australia in the Rugby 7s.

BIG BASH tickets went on sale last week for the Sydney Sixers’ two matches at Coffs Harbour on 1 and 9 January 2022 at C.ex Coffs International Stadium.

The Sixers will bring in 2022 with a bash as they face the Melbourne Renegades on New Year's Day at 7.30pm and return to Coffs Harbour on Sunday, 9 January to play the Perth Scorchers at 7:15pm.

Lease dispute regarding ‘essential term’ PAUL enters a commercial lease with VK Holdings.

Paul agrees to a three year term with options to renew.

After nine months Paul is struggling with cash flow.

For the past few months, he has managed only partial rent payment and had been unable to pay any rent for the last fortnight.

Paul pleads with VK Holdings that he intends to honour the lease and repay monies owed, as he is trying to offload stock and is looking to get an investor onboard.

However, VK Holdings relies on a clause in the lease agreement that provides ‘the lessor can terminate the lease if the lessee is 14 days late in rent payment’.

VK Holdings terminates the lease and begins legal proceedings to recover unpaid rent and outgoings plus damages until the lease end date totalling $74,000.

In Court Paul argues that as he intended to honour the lease, and as it was the lessor who terminated the lease, he should only be liable to repay the outstanding amount owing at the date of termination being $12,000.

The Court finds in favour of Paul, stating ‘a lessor cannot recover the loss which it sustains as a result of its own act to terminate and as such the loss which can be recovered by the lessor is limited to the loss which flows from the lessee’s breach’, thus dismissing the claim for additional damages sought post the termination date.

If VK Holdings had sought legal advice in the preparation of the lease the solicitor may have recommended the ’14 days’ clause clearly state that it was an ‘essential term’, which if breached by the lessee, would allow VK Holdings to seek damages until the lease end date.

It is important to seek legal advice when entering into lease agreements and contracts.

It is sunny, with calm seas, and a cool, annoying breeze.

The river looks tropical and sensational.

A smallish number of Nippers are at Main Beach and the new balcony on the Surf Club is under construction.

Cars are parked up the hill to within 50 metres of Liston Street, where another car park is filling up in front of the Community Hall and Museum.

Another ten or so cars fill the cul-de-sac around the corner at the northern end of Beilby’s Beach.

Police On The Streets

1. ON 6/11/21 at about 9:50pm Police stopped a vehicle on Hyland Park Rd, Hyland Park.

The 24-year-old female driver was confirmed as having been issued a previous traffic offence only two days prior and her licence had been suspended.

The accused woman was advised she would be receiving a Court attendance notice to appear before Macksville Local Court on 23/12/21.

2. On 5/11/21 at about 8:35pm Police arrested a 38-year-old woman at a Macksville address for breaching an AVO. The accused woman was charged at Macksville Police Station and later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 25/11/21.

3. On 6/11/21 at about 7pm Police attended a Nambucca Heads address where they issued a criminal infringement to a 42-yearold man for the offence of shoplifting, following investigations related to the theft of an item from Mitre 10, Macksville on 2/10/21.

4. On 7/11/21 at about 12:35pm Police arrested a 32-year-old man in Bowraville for a number of offences and an outstanding warrant.

The accused man was charged at Kempsey

We do have local aged care, disability and youth services however many of the other types of help which were offered though the Neighbourhood Centre are managed and operated remotely.

Police Station and during a search Police located a round of ammunition in the offender's shorts.

The accused man was bail refused and appeared before Kempsey Local Court on 8/11/21 where he was subsequently bail refused to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 15/12/21 for offences related to: Break and Enter, Negligent Driving, Malicious Damage, Armed with intent commit indictable offence, 2 x Custody of knife in public place, Possess ammunition, Commit S. 114 offence.

On 12/11/21 about 3:20am emergency services were alerted to a truck on fire along the northbound lane of the Pacific Highway, Warrell Creek.

NSW Fire & Rescue, NSW Rural Fire, and Ambulance also attended.

Police provided traffic control whilst the fire was brought under control.

The Driver escaped injury and did not require any treatment.

The Pacific highway was closed for a period of time.

Both trailers were completely destroyed.

6. On 11/10/21 at about 6:45am Police issued a 22-year-old woman with a Court

Shelly Beach car park is almost full.

On Friday, November 12, a hot afternoon at the V-wall, the car park is almost full.

Roads are narrow to each of these popular locations.

This is not in the holiday season.

This is November in the new and emergingfrom-the-cocoon Nambucca Heads, the town without a traffic-light and only a couple of roundabouts.

We’ve seen the development of Noosa Heads over the last 50 years to whatever you think about it now.

The same applies to Airlie Beach and Port Douglas.

Byron Bay may bring the A-listers, but some tourists have started avoiding it with its parking fees etc, and that is if they can get a parking space in the first place.

The sea-changers and investors to Nambucca are growing in number.

Real estate development behind the Nambucca Plaza Shopping Precinct is well on the way. There is only one road into where most of our schools are.

SIX weeks ago, I was invited to my boyfriend's parents' house for dinner.

He neglected to tell them that I can't stomach pork, and to be polite I forced myself to eat it and hid little bits of it under my salad, but I somehow got through the night.

ANOTHER weekend of championships down.

Three more to go and they will be finished for the year and with COVID, lockdowns, floods and only one green for the most part of the year that's not a bad

effort.

Last Saturday the quarter finals were played for the mixed fours.

There were a few upsets, a few touch ups and a few that ended the way you might expect.

On Sunday the semi-finals

were played in slightly better conditions than Saturday with less wind.

The team of Ian (the Drum) Poletti, Gloria Richardson and Pam and Mike James defeated Janis Cedelland, Sandra Secold, Aaron and Doug Cedelland 17 -16.

SPORT Doug led from the first bowl to the second last bowl when Drum drew the shot to win the game.

It sure kept the crowd entertained.

It was also great to see the Cedo family playing together.

Curran, Mark Blackford, Margret Duffus and Nerida Blackford defeated Pat Smith (who had to skip because John Rowdy Reynolds had to work), super sub Barry Redman, Rosemary Dugdale and Dallas Nancarrow 23-11.

The final should be a cracker next Saturday.

On Sunday at 1.00pm the mixed pairs start, so instead of

sitting at home watching TV all weekend get down the club and cheer on your favourite side.

Hopefully Mr Doom and Gloom gets the weather right like he did on the weekend for a change.

Don't forget the A.G.M. on 12 December at 11.00am as well as the Xmas triples on 18 of December with a 10.30am start.

THE Macksville Country Club Golf’s Stableford event, sponsored by Busfurb, was won by Shane O'Neill, despite the coaching by playing partner and club stirrer Roy Rudner.

Runner Up was Scott's Head big hitter Paul Donges.

Nearest the pins were won by Allan Clarke in A grade on both feature holes with Cameron Knox the only B grader to feature and Dave Poole and John Poole C grade winners.

Tuesday's ladies competition was won by Cathy Cresswell, who consistently hits long and straight, while Jo Montague came in runner up.

It has been good to see Brandon Connor (Coffs Harbour assistant pro) make the trip down on Sunday's for six weeks to coach sixteen new ladies in the finer points of golf.

Hopefully they will continue with golf in competition or socially as sporting club's need all the support they can get.

The mid week competition was won

by Liam Fuller with Mick O'Brien and Neil Cunneen runners up.

Saturday 20 November is a big day for the club with the Bede Clarke memorial three person Ambrose being played. Bede and his late wife Dot were well known and respected in Macksville and produced three A grade golfers.

This event is open to good, ordinary and poor golfers.
