Ten local artists' works were featured at the art show.

Different mediums of art were represented, ranging from metal sculptures, ceramics, wood carvings through to painting, jewellery and photography.

Lyn said, “I would like to give a huge thank you to the Valla Beach community and visitors who supported and enjoyed Valla Expressions for the fifth year.

“It delighted everyone who passed by the metal sculpture, ringing the bell on their way into the hall.

“The ‘wow’ factor was there in spades with such a variety of artwork, both 2D and 3D on display,” Lyn said.

Owing to Covid safe practices, the attendees were shown through the gallery in groups to view the creative works on display.

Each artist pays a commission on the sales from their work, and this goes back to fund community infrastructure projects being completed by the Valla Beach Community Association.

Examples of current projects are the redesigning of Anderson Park, with a bike track and climbing wall to come, and a new stage for the Valla Reserve.

This stage will be a permanent structure and available for the community to use.

Ray is pleased to announce that he will be sending $14,000 to the CCI to assist in research into childhood cancers.

100 million rapid antigen tests for NSW THE first batch of 100 million Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) will be distributed to NSW essential public workers and vulnerable communities from this week to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the NSW Government will receive 50 million tests from mid-January to February, with a further 50 million tests being sourced for delivery from February and into March.

“We are ensuring essential workers in our public workforce and vulnerable communities have access to free kits in this first round,” Mr Perrottet said.

“These tests, all approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, will help them to quickly ascertain if they need to self-isolate and ensure support and health advice is provided to those who need it.”

Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Stuart Ayres said the Government’s procurement teams have worked hard to secure tests that meet the TGA’s robust standards.

“The NSW community has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, which is why we’re able to confidently shift to this new phase of test and isolate.

“The procurement of these additional rapid antigen tests will support the NSW public sector workforce, support our return to school plan and provide support to those most in need.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the boost to NSW’s RAT supply will help alleviate the pressure on the NSW Health system – as well as provide protection for our most vulnerable.

“Most people should now use a RAT to confirm if they are positive for COVID-19. This allows PCRs to be used when medically required for clinical care, as well as drastically reducing the queues for PCR testing,” Mr Hazzard said.

“While this is an important step in our management of COVID-19, I urgently remind everyone that vaccination and boosters are the best way to keep hospitalisations down and loved ones safe.”

NSW Health and the Department of

Communities and Justice will jointly lead distribution of the RATs, with logistical support from NGOs and Primary Health Networks.

Vulnerable populations will be prioritised, including: ● Aboriginal communities ● people receiving aged care services in the home ● people with a disability in supported independent living accommodation ● refugees ● social housing tenants, rough sleepers and women’s refuges ● vulnerable families and children and young people in residential and out-of-home care Critical government settings have also been prioritised to ensure continuity of essential public services, including return to school, health and transport.

Planning is underway for the rollout of additional tranches of Rapid Antigen Tests in

the coming months.

More than 42,000 tests are already on their way to 44 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and NGOs supporting rough sleepers and refugees for distribution from tomorrow.

The NSW Government has allocated $250 million to procure the first tranche of 50.1 million RATs. Meanwhile, vaccinations for children aged five to 11 commenced on Monday with parents and carers urged to book their children an appointment as soon as possible.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty) will be made available for the roughly 720,000 children in that age group across NSW. “More than 18,000 kids aged five to 11 have caught COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, which highlights why vaccination is so important,” Mr Perrottet said.

Nambucca Covid Case load Rising THERE were 493 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the Mid North Coast Local Health District to 8pm on 10 January 2022.

37 cases were from the Nambucca Valley LGA, 265 of the reported cases were from the Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA, 99 cases were from Coffs Harbour LGA, 88 cases were from Kempsey LGA and four cases were from Bellingen LGA. This brought the total of active cases in the Nambucca LGA to 241.

As of Monday, there were 44

COVID-19 cases in Mid North Coast hospitals, with two people in intensive care.

There have been 6,251 cases reported in the district since June 2021.

There were 928 tests conducted at our Mid North Coast Health clinics on Monday.

Regional communities urged to take steps to prevent COVID-19 spread REGIONAL residents are being urged to book their COVID-19 booster shots as soon as possible, to help local health staff manage the community’s transition from pandemic to endemic.

The call came as official NSW case figures hit a daily high of more than 30,000 over the weekend, according to NSW Health.

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) President Darriea Turley said regional NSW had responded magnificently to the pandemic so far, with around 93% of residents double vaccinated and a real focus on protecting the vulnerable in their communities.

“It’s what regional and rural communities do – they pull together in times of crisis,” Cr Turley said.

“We’ve seen it again and again, through drought, bushfires, floods, and COVID. “But there can be no doubt our regions face special challenges, and you need only look at the evidence before last year’s NSW parliamentary inquiry into rural and regional health to see the cumulative impact of these.

“Difficulties in accessing health care, staffing shortages and the sheer tyranny of distance are just the most obvious issues experienced outside our cities.

“Supply chain issues also have more impact outside metropolitan areas, and have the potential to exacerbate the impact on our rural and regional health system.

“Now, with the Omicron variant infecting more Australians than ever before, we’re calling on regional communities to do everything

they can to support their local health professionals by getting jabbed with their booster shot as soon as possible.”

Cr Turley said that while the infection rate of the Omicron variant was high, reports indicated that the vast majority of doublevaccinated Australians who were infected experienced mild symptoms and were able to manage their own care at home.

“However, we all know vulnerable or immunocompromised people in our communities, so to protect them while also supporting our local medical professionals it’s common sense to stick to the behaviours we know work, and book in for a booster shot,” she said.

Cr Turley also stressed the importance of the common sense and community spirit for which the residents of regional NSW were known.

Antigen Tests and a wait for booster appointments are inevitable in some areas, through no fault of our local providers,” she said.

“Local businesses may be short-staffed due to people isolating because they are sick or close contacts.

“Our medical professionals have been working their guts out for two years now to keep us safe, and they’re increasingly exhausted.

“In tough times like these we need to continue to be kind to each other, because that’s the way we will get through this with our communities intact.”

Cr Turley said NSW councils would continue to do their best to support their communities, and were ready and willing to help drive a locally led recovery from the latest phase of the pandemic.

“None of us can do it alone: we need all levels of government and all members of the community to work together so we can move past the COVID pandemic and into a much brighter 2022.”

BOWRAVILLE Pioneer Community Centre celebrated the New Year with their Annual Book Fair on Saturday 8 January.

The inside tables were covered

with a range of unique books, covering a broad spectrum of authors and genres, priced to perfection.

Books suitable for both adults and children were available.

All proceeds from the Book Fair will go to funding the Bowraville Pioneer Community Centre.

The Centre is a community hub for Bowraville, with funding costs of approximately $12,000.00 pa.

- ON 3/1/22 Police attended Wallace St, Macksville in relation to a vehicle reported stolen from a Bonville address the previous day.

A seventeen-year-old male youth was arrested at the scene and a small amount of cannabis was seized.

The young person was charged at Macksville Police Station with a number of offences and was refused bail by Police to appear before Coffs Harbour Children’s Court on 4/1/22.

The accused was subsequently granted strict bail conditions by the Court to appear before Coffs Harbour Children’s Court on 24/1/22.

- On 1/1/22 Police arrested a 33-year-old man at a Bowraville address in relation to a domestic violence incident where a 28-yearold woman is alleged to have been assaulted.

The victim sustained facial injuries and was conveyed by Ambulance to Macksville Hospital for treatment.

The accused man was charged

at Macksville Police Station and refused bail by Police to appear before Port Macquarie Local Court on 2/1/22.

The accused was subsequently refused bail by the Court to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 10/1/22.

- On 1/1/22 Police arrested a 25-year-old woman at a Nambucca Heads address in relation to a family dispute involving a 27-year-old man.

The accused woman was charged at Macksville Police Station with an intimidation offence where she was refused bail to appear before Port Macquarie Local Court on 2/1/22.

The accused woman was subsequently granted bail by the Court to appear before Macksville Local Court on 13/1/22.

- On 1/1/22 Police attended a Scotts Head address in relation to a 27-year-old man who was wanted on four outstanding warrants for domestic violence offences, Skye’s Law (pursuit) offences, breach of bail, and breach of Community

Corrections Order, avoiding arrest and foot pursuits with Police.

Upon attending the accused man decamped from the premises, jumped fences and ran through a number of properties and neighbouring streets.

With the assistance of the Scotts Head community, Police were able to locate and arrest the accused.

Police seized a hypodermic syringe and prescribed restricted substances from the accused and he was later charged at Kempsey Police Station with numerous offences.

The accused man was refused bail and appeared before Port Macquarie Local Court on 2/1/22.

The accused was subsequently refused bail by the Court to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 10/1/22.

- On 6/1/22 Police arrested a 62-year-old man at a Nambucca Heads address for breaching an AVO. The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station and later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 20/1/22.

Update on Council’s Natural Disaster Recovery NAMBUCCA Valley Council is continuing to work through the restoration of compromised roads and infrastructure in the Nambucca Valley following the March 2021 flood which was a declared natural disaster.

With over 380 road and infrastructure locations impacted, to date Council has overseen the remediation of approximately 350 at an estimated cost of $2.1 million.

Financial assistance has been provided to Council from the NSW Government under the NSW Disaster Assistance Guidelines.

Council say these projects require further geotechnical investigation and detailed design.

Delivery of the natural disaster recovery works is progressing more slowly than desired due to a lack of contractors. Funding assistance is available to Council to complete these works until the end of the 2023/2024 financial year.

Council will be launching a page on its website early in 2022 dedicated to providing information and updates on the outstanding projects to keep the community informed as works progress.

OUR native wildlife is the theme of the latest Art with Heart Exhibition, ‘Wildlife’, which opened Saturday 18 December at the Phoenix Gallery, Bowraville.

A pageant of colours is displayed in the works of art depicting an assortment of our Australian native wildlife and environment.

‘Wildlife’ is an exhibition of local artists with disabilities.

Depictions of turtles, fireflies, cockatoos, budgerigars, echidnas, and bush turkeys are on display until the end of February 2022.

On opening day, the Welcome to Country was given by Poppa.

Art Facilitator Nelli Gallop declared the exhibition open by thanking the exhibiting artists, the community, and everyone who worked in the background to bring the exhibition together.

“We all love our wildlife and some of the works displayed have been in the making over a long period of time. q Carmel Mott, student artist and exhibitor.

“This exhibition has a long tradition, and was started by Susie Peak over the last 20 years.

“Art with Heart is a collaboration between the artists, teachers, support groups, and family members.

“It’s a privilege to be able to work within this gig,” said Nelli.

Each year ten percent of sales are given to a nominated charity.

Last it was the Fred Hollows Foundation, and this year the students wholeheartedly decided to support WIRES. Tracey Reynolds, whose WIRES speciality is Macropods, said, “At WIRES we are all volunteers and any costs come from our own pockets.

“We thank Phoenix Gallery, the students, and Nelli for this wonderful donation that will go towards buying feed, training, housing, and items that go with caring for our lost or injured wildlife.”

Exhibiting artist Kristine Reynolds said, “We all love our art and we are happy to be giving 10% of sales to WIRES.”

Abby Jae has been an artist for the past five years, and has exhibited artworks at the ‘2000 Vision’ Exhibition, ‘Out of this World’ (2020), ‘The Magic of Nature’ Challenge 2021, and the Community Services Art Competition in Tamworth.

Alan Mills is an emerging artist, and has been creating works since 2015.

Alan said, “I really enjoy creating patterns, and am inspired by the outdoors.”

Carmel Mott has won Highly Commended at the Macksville Show, and an Encouragement Award at the 2020 Challenge Community Services Awards in Tamworth.

Kristine Reynolds has won first and second place prizes at the Challenge Community Services Awards in Tamworth in 2019 and 2020.

“I’m inspired by my art, music, my guitar, and my art teacher Nelli,” said Kristine Reynolds.

The students also have cards and calendars depicting their work for sale at the gallery.

Nambucca Heads artists showing at Nexus

NAMBUCCA Heads based husband and wife creative team, ceramicist Michaela and fine artist Dieter Kloeckner, open their coastal-inspired collection of artworks in an exhibition named Coastal Tales at Nexus Gallery in Bellingen this weekend.

Coastal Tales opens on Sunday 16 January and runs through to Thursday 11 February.

Making Nambucca Heads their home five years ago was in huge part a choice to live a coastal life and experience a daily connection with the ocean.

“The close proximity to the stunning local beaches has since greatly impacted on both our work,” Michaela told News Of The Area.

The pair have a passion for the beach and the treasures it holds and washes up onto the sand.

Valla Beach inspirations at Coffs’ Regional Gallery

JAN Allsopp is the chosen artist for Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery’s first exhibition of the year.

It was a move to her beloved family holiday home at Valla Beach that inspired a trajectory to a new approach to her work that you will see at the exhibition.

In 2016, when she settled into the Valla Beach home, Jan wanted to represent her happy memories and experiences in paint but struggled to create something she felt truly captured their spirit.

By switching from

representational painting to non-objective painting, Jan experienced an opening up of expressive opportunity.

Jan moved her studio back to her Coffs Harbour home in 2020 and has been working to create the body of work which makes up the upcoming exhibition called ‘Complex Simplicity’.

It’s a vibrant collection of artworks by Jan, a selfexpressed ‘happiness enthusiast’.

Freshness and fun combine in the colourful show, a solo exhibition of work opening on 22 January 2022.

And it’s a humdinger of a dynamic exhibition lasting almost four months, closing on 28 May, featuring a range of inspired and inspiring

activities including an Artist’s Talk, and an interactive Drawing for Happiness workshop, with more to be announced.

Full of bright, happy colours, Allsopp’s works are the product of creating within self-imposed boundaries such as limited colours or scale of work.

The Complex Simplicity title refers to her multi-layered works with recognisable shapes, textures and colours.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have a sneak peek at Jan’s incredible work having spent some time with Jan in her home studio,” said Lisa Knowlson, Acting Gallery Museum and Public Art Coordinator.

The show is linked to Allsopp’s ‘Creating for Happiness’ – a resource the artist has developed around building both an artistic and ‘happiness’ practice.

Following two years of adaptation, creative resilience

and various rolling changes, this exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to recognise the role of happiness in their lives as well as finding ways to embed it in their routines.

The show is offering interactive experiences such as allowing visitors to immerse themselves in layers of colour and embrace the opportunity to create like the artist by layering colour shapes on the Gallery walls in “the room without a roof” – more details to be announced.

Jet ski safety a top priority Nambucca Men’s JET SKI riders across the North Coast have been targeted in the year’s first jet ski compliance and education blitz, with NSW Maritime issuing three penalty notices and 20 official warnings from more than 200 inspections over the weekend.

Rod McDonagh NSW Maritime Manager Waterways Operations North Area said ‘Operation Ride Safe’ focused on speed, lifejacket wear, anti-social behaviour, and licensing and registration in a bid to promote conscientiousness and waterway safety.

“Having emerged from lockdown and heading into the peak of summer our waterways are extremely busy, which is why campaigns like this are so important to ensure everyone is staying safe while having fun,” Mr McDonagh said.

“While the compliance rate was 90 per cent, there were still too many people breaking the law with licensing and registration

issues the top offence.

“This accounted for 60 per cent of breaches followed by speeding and then behavioral matters.

“It was encouraging that the majority of jet ski riders were adhering to safety requirements and observing speed and distances off restrictions.

“It’s about courtesy to all waterway users whether they be in a boat, swimming or on another jet ski.”

Mr McDonagh said jet ski safety was particularly important this boating season due to its increase in popularity over the past year.

“We have seen a 16 percent increase in jet ski licences and registrations in the past 12 months compared to the previous year,” Mr McDonagh said.

“This means we expect to see more people out on the waterways using jet skis this summer, with a number of them new to the activity and having less experience.

“For those who have just received their licence we urge you to take it slow, learn

how to operate your jet ski and take extra caution while your experience grows.

“This same message is aimed at anyone who has not ridden their jet ski since last boating season and may have recently brought it out of the garage to enjoy over summer.

“This means always wearing a lifejacket, keeping a proper lookout, and checking the weather before and during your trip.”

Boating Safety Officers carried out more than 221 random safety checks of jet ski riders over two days along the North Coast.

What a year it was with bushfires, floods and something called Covid.

2022 can only be better, because it couldn't be any worse than 2021.

All championships were played (eventually) plus a few charity days as well with the women bowlers raising some money and generally having fun all round.

We look forward to more this year especially with two greens.

The Christmas Triples on 18 December went off well with nice weather and a great lunch made by Paul and Nicole and their helpers Joanne, Chris and Donna.

The tables looked great and the service was brilliant.

Winners on the day with three wins and a margin that nobody could get close to were Bill (Bonzi) Coughlin, Pete (swinging ) Dawe and Tyrone Webber.

Second place also with three wins were Don Lean, Cosi and Bruce Mason.

two points needed to leapfrog Graham (the less Grumpy) Hunt by a point to claim the Bowler Of The Year Title for 2021.

Ken also won the clubs Major Single's so it was only fitting he should win both.

The Presentation was held after the Triples and the winners and runners up received certificates and big fat envelopes with cash for their efforts.

The Royal Tar (a night tournament) plays out over the first four Tuesday nights in January with a 5:30pm call of the cards and a 5.50pm start.

Wednesday and Friday Bowls are still on and all are welcome to play.

His score clearly won him the Medal with big hitter and consistent player Mick Manning off a three handicap winning the Spoon.

grade with Mick Trisley the C grade.

Straight shooters were A grade Mick Manning and Mike Simpson B grade James Collison and Jeff Gore with Dave Poole the only C grader to hit the green.

Geoff's behind the scenes voluntary work including putting the flags out in the morning and taking them in at night and marking kilometres of boundaries is really appreciated by members.

Despite COVID we are hoping 2022 is an enjoyable and healthy year for all.

Sunday 2 January was another very successful Elly Stig Memorial Day, and I understand that the golf and Charity Auction raised over $10,000 in aid of the Children’s Cancer Institute – so far, this day organised by Ray Stig and his family has raised well over $400,000 – a huge effort!

Congratulations to all the golfers who supported the day - some with very colourful outfits, and especially to those that dug deep into their pockets in support of the Auction.

RECENTLY Nambucca Valley Archery Club held their final fun shoot and presentation evening for the 2021 season.

The fun shoot was a great opportunity to bring senior and junior club members, as well as carers and friends, together for an evening of fun and games.

With the playing field evened up thanks to a No Compound Bow rule, everyone had to use a Barebow Recurve bow for the event, for some this was more challenging than others as it had been quite some time since our Compound archers had last shot with a Recurve bow.

All of our teams adapted quickly and each team was able to take out a win at the afternoon a week over a one month period in January or February each year.

News Of The Area spoke to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nambucca Heads Bowling Club, Mr Tony Stokes, who said, “The purpose of playing the shield each year is to keep this piece of Nambucca Valley history alive.”

President of the Nambucca Heads Men’s Bowlers, Mr Ray Hunt said, “We are very happy with the number of bowlers that have shown up to bowl in the shield and they are likely to invite bowlers from elsewhere in the Nambucca Valley to participate in future years.”

WELCOME to 2022!

Our last column in 2021 focused on the role of the Branch of Red Cross and this month will highlight Emergency Services – Red Cross.

Many people are not aware that there exist two areas of Red Cross: The Branch and Emergency Services.

If you become a Red Cross Emergency Services volunteer you will assist individuals, households, and communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies wherever they may be.

Volunteers provide psychological First Aid to people affected by a disaster at evacuation or recovery centres by visiting people door-todoor after an event, or by registering people with ‘Register Find Reunite’ to help them reconnect with family or friends during and after an emergency or disaster.

Emergencies don’t just include major natural disasters such as bushfires or floods.

A fall in the home that results in an unexpected hospital stay, a car accident, or serious illness can also cause significant disruption and add stress to your life.

You can however reduce the impact of emergencies, big or small, by being prepared.

Our volunteers play a vital role in helping communities prepare for emergencies by sharing information and supporting individuals to follow the Red Cross Emergency RediPlan which is an easy-to-follow list of steps to follow in the event of an emergency.

Red Cross is also engaged with assisting individuals through the Community Visitors Scheme.

This scheme involves regular visits to people in need by a caring and friendly volunteer.

It might be that you are not in regular contact with people, you live alone, you may have a disability that limits your mobility, or you are recovering from an injury.

This scheme will give you support and connect you to a person and provide that social interaction that is often missing for some.

Resources: Red Cross has a wonderful resource that could be useful if you, the family, or your children are forced to isolate for a period of time.

Seeking Asylum: Our Stories DEAR News Of The Area,

This is one of the great advantages of working from home, right up there with being able to work in your pyjamas (unless you have to attend Zoom meetings, in which case wearing the bottom half of your pyjamas is still acceptable).

It is tempting to use the opportunities granted to us by the COVID-19 pandemic to multitask, but it's also important not to abuse this situation.

If, for example, your work-leisure mix starts to include visits to the beach, reading a novel, uncovering the secrets of the Mediterranean diet, teaching your dog how to master yoga poses so you can make a Tik Tok and become an influencer, or becoming a Bitcoin investor, then you are possibly taking advantage of your working from home arrangement.

If, on the other hand, you are using your 'take a stretch and a deep breath' breaks to hang out the washing, then you are simply making good use of time.

Really, when you think about the number of workplace interruptions from water-cooler chit chat to extended lunch breaks and endless unproductive meetings complete with doughnuts and coffee, you are probably being far more efficient than usual.

There are some great apps that record and allocate your hours.

Maybe try using one of these and have a 'non-work-related' project.

This way you can keep accurate tabs on how many breaks you are really taking and whether they are becoming excessive.

She spent six years in a refugee tent in the Saudi Arabian desert, before arriving in Australia at the age of twenty with no English and limited education.

But, like so many refugees, she was determined and resilient.

She was eventually awarded a Bachelor of Science degree with high distinction, and later completed her PhD. She now works as a university lecturer, training biomedical students on their way to becoming doctors.

Another refugee, Danijel, tells us that he has gone from milking cows in a war zone to representing blue-collar workers in Australian courts.

It is important that the stories of refugees are heard.

To that end, some members of our local refugee advocacy group have purchased copies of the book for our local libraries.

These have now been presented to Macksville, Nambucca, Urunga and Bellingen libraries.

We do hope that members of our communities will enjoy reading the refugees’ stories, which will hopefully contribute to a better and more empathetic understanding of the issues, and help us to respond with greater compassion and humanity to these people.

They are seeking a hand up, not a handout, and, with support, have so much to offer to Australian society.

SANDRA Moon’s excellent valedictory article about the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to two outstanding journalists is both timely and important.

As the Norwegian Nobel Committee reminds us, freedom of expression and freedom of information help to ensure an informed public, and these rights are crucial prerequisites for democracy, and for protection against war and conflict. The News of the Area has made a refreshing contribution in this space during 2021, which is admirable.

As we head towards the federal election in the months ahead, a relentless focus on truth in electioneering and on a media that is courageous enough to speak truth to power will be more important than ever.

This is particularly relevant in relation to the depiction and treatment of asylum seekers and refugees.

For the past two decades, we have shifted from a focus on compassion and our human rights obligations to one of fomenting fear and spreading misinformation.

Securing votes at elections, whatever the human cost, is now front and centre.

The potential presence of refugees has preoccupied the nation – from the Tampa incident, the ‘children overboard’ falsehood, and the demonising of asylum seekers as potential terrorists, rapists, thieves and job-stealers.

In all this fog of misinformation and scaremongering, the real stories of refugees have been excluded from the national narrative.

A new book, ‘Seeking Asylum: Our Stories’, put together by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, seeks to redress the balance through the voices and stories of real q ‘Seeking refugees who have arrived Asylum: Our Stories’, in Australia during the past put together by the twenty years.

The twenty-three people Asylum Seeker who tell their stories in this Resource Centre. beautifully illustrated book have one thing in common, in that all of them had been forced to flee their homeland.

Thereafter, each of their stories is unique and deeply personal.

When Ghofran was just nine years old, her family was forced to flee Iraq.

Fair go for the Nambucca RSL Lease Renewal Application DEAR News Of The Area,

FROM information being discussed via the members of the Nambucca RSL, the club is seeking a new lease for the future of the Club from the Council.

It also appears during the negotiation of the new lease, the Council is trying to be unreasonable and pressure the RSL into being a Cash Cow. 1. The claimed rental increase of 95% demanded is astronomically disproportionate to the land and rental values of the area, and a fairer rise should be negotiated

2. The RSL is the leaseholder, the Council is the manager of the parcel of Crown Land which the RSL is on, so, who is the owner of that parcel of land?

As mentioned, “investigation works are required by the property owner to determine the scope of works to fix the pavement issues”.

Therefore, surely, the responsibility and cost of the investigative work and the actual repairs process is on the owner!

Unless there is a legal requirement, as part of the condition in the lease giving the RSL the ownership responsibility for maintaining the site structure and stability.

3. The boardwalk and river beautification hardly becomes the RSL’s responsibility, and should be covered by the funding council receives, perhaps through the redirecting of other funds as the council seems to do.

4. As a former builder and building teacher, I believe that the whole foreshore site is somewhat unstable and it’s only trees, vegetation (which I have photos of), building debris, and luck supporting the foreshore’s collapse, from Gordon Park to the Boat Ramp in the RSL’s carpark.

It is only a matter of time before a landslide occurs, all at Council's cost.

The character of Jack Ryan is well-known to film audiences, portrayed by a range of actors including Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford. This fifth incarnation of the action hero, which isn’t adapted from a book, is handled with aplomb by Chris Pine (Star Trek, above ).

After graduating from the military and witnessing the events of 9/11, young CIA analyst Ryan is faced with a two-fold impending disaster: a plot to destroy the American economy with a terrorist attack. Fast-paced, without giving up on character development, it’s a very likable thriller.

Don’t mistake this campy series as another true-crime documentary lifting the lid on murderous women.

The cheekily titled Why Women Kill is a gaudy and fun creation from Marc Cherry, the man behind the smash hit drama of the early 2000s, Desperate Housewives. Season two of the black comedy introduces a new cast and a striking 1940s setting, along with more swoon-worthy costumes.

In “Secret Beyond The Door”, we meet Alma (Allison Tolman, Fargo), who dreams of filling a recently vacated seat in her local garden club, led by the powerful Rita (Lana Parrilla, right).

However, her loving husband’s shocking secret jeopardises her chances.

MIRIAM & ALAN: LOST IN SCOTLAND ABC, 8.30pm

In what seems like a rather odd but fascinating pairing, actors Miriam Margolyes (Call the Midwife) and Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) take to a campervan to explore their Scottish roots. But rather than an idyllic exploration of the landscape and culture of Bonnie Scotland, this three-part travelogue turns out to be a rather intimate and personal journey that warrants packing a box of tissues. The duo start things off in Glasgow, where they visit the street where Miriam’s Jewish family first lived in Scotland, before journeying to the Highlands. At times, it does seem Miriam and Alan are “lost” in memories, rather than the beauty of the country.

YOU do not have to look hard to find the Nambucca Valley has a fascinating history and is directly linked to some enthralling historical events.

This week bowlers at the Nambucca Heads Bowling Club did their bit to remind us of some of this rich history when they began bowling in the annual Royal Tar Shield.

The shield is named after a ship, classed as a barque, that was built in the Nambucca River in 1876 by the celebrated ship builder John Campbell Stuart.

At the time the 600 ton Royal Tar was the largest vessel ever built in Australia.
