Valla residents consultation meeting at Council to protect wildlife lot FROM Page 1

According to Valla resident Cathy Welsford, “This small block joins a large bushed area, the Valla Beach Reserve, and a small remnant of bush on the other side of Ocean View Drive.”

For those residents who are unsure of where the block is, Cathy said, “It’s the land where you see the kangaroos.

“It’s a fabulous corridor for all sorts of animals and birds nest there in the hollow trees.

“The proposed rezoning area will only support two house blocks at the expense of an established wildlife corridor and an area used daily by the local community.”

A public consultation meeting was held about this issue on 4 November at Nambucca Valley Council Chambers, and concerned residents spoke against the proposal.

A consultation meeting is part of the process of rezoning any Council land.

Emma Broomfield is the independent consultant who heard the concerns, and will write up a report to be given to Council.

This report will be put on the Council website.

A petition has been circulating and Cathy said, “We have had a magnificent community response.

“We have about 250 physical signatures on the petition and 350 online signatures.

“This is nearly half the population of Valla Beach.”

Approximately 23 attended the consultation meeting, with 10 speakers, all of who spoke against the rezoning of the land.

designated Lot 45 as Community Land for good reasons that have not changed, as the community has repeatedly expressed a desire to retain some open green spaces for future generations and wildlife.

“Once gone, it is lost forever.

“Lot 45 provides a significant wildlife corridor for kangaroos, echidnas, koalas, monitor lizards, goannas, brush turkeys , and a huge variety of birds using the trees for feeding, nesting, transit to the remnant bush on either side, and as part of the annual migrations.”

There are also threatened native plants regenerating naturally on the lot.

Written submissions are being made to the panel, to be received up until 4 pm on 12 November.

Council will remeet and decide what to do with the rezoning after reading the report provided by the consultant.

A final decision on the land will be made in the new year.

“Torres Strait Islanders are asking for your solidarity during COP26 to elevate their call to action and draw attention to the Torres Strait - the frontlines of the climate crisis in Australia,” a statement from the organisation stated.

Over 50 locals responded to the call, lining the shore at Scotts Head with the messages of 'Solidarity with the Torres Strait', 'Oceans are Rising, so are we', 'Protect Zenadh Kes' and 'Urgent climate action'.

Attendees were offered a Welcome to Country by Gumbaynggirr Elder Ritchie Donovan, and heard a talk from Mark Werner, a local Torres Strait Islander, before paddling out on the point.

Mark said the campaign was vital to the ongoing survival of the Torres Strait and its people.

"As a Torres Strait Islander I draw strength from my ancestors and their remarkable accomplishments.

“Torres Strait Islanders have always led from the front.

“They have ensured the protection and custodianship of some of the most beautiful land and sea country on earth for thousands of years.

“This carefully and sustainably managed land and seascape is now being decimated by coastal flooding and climate damage,” said Mark.

Local Emma Gentle, who helped organise the Scotts Head event said, "I responded to this call to line the the shore in solidarity with Torres Straits Islanders because I am flummoxed by

Activists say climate change is impacting on the Torres Strait region in many ways.

According to the Climate Council, sea level rise is occurring at twice the global average in the Torres Strait, threatening many island villages which are less than two metres above sea level.

More extreme seasons and more severe cyclones cause flooding, coastal erosion and inundation affecting freshwater supplies.

our government's disregard for the serious problems being faced by the world, not least Pacific Islanders who are already losing their islands with the rising sea level that is set to keep rising as ice caps melt.

"Cop26 showed our Prime Minister as a lone figure not committing to anything much.

“He has minimised the vast amount of work being undertaken by so many Australians taking serious climate action.

“We need more creative leaders that don't get stuck in how things were done, as with hindsight, those ways were not ideal for the planet, thereby, for us.

“We all adapted as people, communities, countries, even globally, to Covid.

“I hope we can adapt to a new

Susan Jenvey runs for Mayor

NAMBUCCA Valley Labor Councillor Susan Jenvey is running for Mayor and Councillor in the upcoming Local Government Elections on December 4.

Cr Jenvey places a high priority on environmental issues, informing solutions that she would like to bring to Council on things like the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Cr Jenvey believes strongly that Council, “can be influential in the way it sees the climate emergency, and use its position to lobby for outcomes at a state or federal level".

“It’s about embedding climate action deep within Council’s DNA.” Cr Jenvey’s environmental focus includes acknowledging the Mid North Coast’s position as a solar capital in NSW. “We should position ourselves for this community to benefit from bigger batteries and cheaper electricity.

“We need to step up our ambitions about transport, infrastructure, and buildings, and we need to recycle more waste.”

Protecting waterways and measuring water quality is an area that Cr Jenvey says is critical.

“We need to make sure our farmers are equipped to handle these changes and that our sewerage doesn’t impact the long standing, sustainable oyster industry.”

Cr Jenvey believes the Nambucca Valley is a beautiful area, and says she will protect and promote this in her role in Council.

As a Councillor she has dealt with many complaints from the community around development. “(Council) needs to be more intentional when it comes to development so that it is appropriate for the Indigenous community and the maintenance of our environment.”

Housing affordability and the difficulty

this is causing many in the community is a much discussed issue, and Cr Jenvey believes that Council has a lead role to play in working to solve this issue.

She says the answer lies in “investing in affordable housing for the next generation and for essential workers who are increasingly being excluded”.

Managing the impact that COVID restrictions have had on local businesses and community organisations, and supporting these groups with the easing of restrictions, Cr Jenvey says is a role that Council must play and that she would make sure happens.

“This election is about the community having a voice, not a Council that becomes more corporate.

“I want to work for common agendas, not exclusive agendas.

“This is not a popularity contest but a good outcomes contest.”

The push for greater legislation for intensive farming concerns Mr Ballangarry, specifically the blueberry industry, and he feels that more regulation just makes things harder for everyone.

“What’s needed is for existing government bodies to effectively use the powers they already have to control the issues that concern people.

“If we let intensive farming be made into a scapegoat that results in more legislation, that legislation could then be detrimental to our other primary industry and cost our Valley jobs,” he said.

Mr Ballangarry has worked in local government in Queensland as a master plumber for nearly forty years,

excursions (day only), activities on school sites by fully vaccinated external providers, dancing, music classes, bands, ensembles and lessons (for instruments that can be played with a mask on), and weekly school sport activities.

Activities must be undertaken in school student cohorts, in line with school Covid-safe settings.

Fully vaccinated volunteers and providers are now allowed on school sites to support school operations

or fulfil specific roles, such as helping with the canteen or school uniform shop.

The easing of restrictions was announced by the Department of Education to bring schools in line with current Covid-19 guidelines in community settings.

NSW Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the new changes allow students more curricular and extra-curricular opportunities while schools maintain COVID-19 safe measures.

“Students have experienced an incredibly disrupted school year, in line with the relaxation of community settings, we are aligning some school activities to provide them with as much normality as possible,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Schools’ stringent safety measures remain in place, including vaccinations of all adults on site, cohorting, cleaning, mask wearing and ensuring appropriate ventilation.

“Importantly all adults on site during school hours, including staff and visitors, must be fully vaccinated and wear masks to be allowed on school site.”

The community use of school facilities can also now go ahead, outside of school hours.

“This is a not-forprofit organisation giving independence to those without transport.

“I am so pleased to have been welcomed to the Board, people need services that meet actual needs and I am very much a hands-on person.”

Community groups awarded grant funding

EIGHT not-for-profit organisations (NFPs) across the Nambucca Valley are sharing $309,689 in grants to strengthen how their organisations function, and bolster the way in which these groups can support their communities.

Funding through the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR) Investing in Rural Community Futures (IRCF) program in partnership with Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation (VFFF) will help local groups by funding staff to carry on operations despite multiple distractions, developing efficient process and boosting their capabilities through collaboration and technology.

FRRR Program Manager Nancy Sposato said, “The IRCF program is now in its third year, and gives participating not-for-profits the opportunity to identify common issues and develop local strategies that will support their long-term sustainability.”

This package of grants really shows a deeper understanding and sophistication in how local NFPS are approaching organisational capacity

building, explained Ms Sposato.

News Of The Area spoke with the following FRRR grant recipients.

Nambucca Valley Phoenix Limited received $47,000 of ‘Investing in Strategy – Building a Sustainable Social Enterprise’ funding.

The funding will develop the capacity of the organisation to deliver on their strategy for a sustainable social enterprise developing branding and supporting staff.

Pippa Tabone, Coordinator, Nambucca Valley Phoenix said, “We are a community owned and operated social enterprise, supporting people with

THE Coffs Coast Waste Audit results are in and reveal the need to improve our waste disposal at the home level to reduce what is sent to landfill.

The results show that almost 40 percent of the items going in the red bin actually belong in the green bin.

Military Advocates stand to serve those who have served

By Andrea FERRARI MILITARY Advocates providing around 450 veterans with wellbeing and compensation support, operate from Taree to Grafton with a local office in Scarba Street, Coffs Harbour, incorporated in 2013.

Nambucca Heads RSL SubBranch and Urunga C.ex are helping fund operations.

Louise Freebairn, who has volunteered to provide the Advocacy with Wellbeing service at the C.Ex Urunga, is a member of the Nambucca RSL Sub Branch.

“Each year, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month is special for these and many other veterans,” Advocate Richard

Kelloway told News Of The Area.

“In remembrance of fallen comrades and veterans who have sacrificed their wellbeing in the service of their country, this team is still actively serving veterans and families across the Mid North Coast.”

All are ex-servicemen or from families that experience hardship because of a veteran’s service.

Working as a team, they continue to serve.

“Volunteering as military advocates, our role is to help veterans and families in crisis, ill-health or need.”

The Veterans Centre in the Legacy OpShop, 4 Scarba Street, Coffs Harbour, coordinates operations.

“C.ex has provided advocacy space in its Urunga and Woolgoolga clubs to cope with increasing demand and

Protecting birdlife on the beaches in Nambucca

THE birdlife across Nambucca Valley is plentiful, and something that many locals spend time observing,

enjoying and working to protect.

This includes those birds that nest on the beaches during spring and summer.

According to the NSW National Parks there are only

six species of bird that nest on the beach along the NSW coastline.

These are the Little Tern, Pied Oystercatcher, Beach Stone-curlew, Sooty Oystercatcher, Hooded Plover,

Beach nesting species that are observed in the Nambucca area are the Beach Stonecurlew (critically endangered in NSW), Red-capped Plover and Pied Oystercatcher (vulnerable).

Birdlife, an organisation with over 100 years experience protecting the habitat of native birds, has recorded that threatened migratory shorebird species are regularly sighted in the Nambucca area.

These are the Bar-tailed Godwit (Vulnerable EPBC), and the Double-banded Plover (Threatened IUCN).

According to Birdlife there have also been two separate recordings of Little Tern breeding colonies (endangered in NSW) in the Nambucca area.

The numbers of these birds are declining owing to the increase in threats.

One of the biggest threats to these birds, according to the NSW National Parks, is from uncontrolled domestic dogs.

Other threats include foxes, ravens, storms and king tides.

If shorebirds are chased by dogs their breeding can be disrupted.

Roaming dogs can prey on the eggs, young and adult shorebirds when not kept under control.

The assignment and signage in Nambucca Valley by Council of ‘no dog’ areas, onleash areas, and dedicated offleash areas help with keeping the birds safe.

In off-lead areas it is important to have control of dogs to prevent them from running into the dunes or chasing shorebirds.

Council has advised that Rangers are out ensuring that these areas are being used correctly, and that dog walkers are usually following the rules set out on the signage.

“People do need to understand the beach is a place of great well-being, but it may not be for shorebirds, and that a single disturbance can set birds into flight and affect their long flight home.

“Disturbance can also affect breeding.”

Cr Jenvey suggested that, “It may be time for this community to have a conversation about sectioning off parts of the dunes during the shorebirds migratory breeding time.

“A Draft Coastal Management Plan has been on exhibition that the community

have made submissions to.

“There is the potential to develop a strategy from this around the further protection of shorebirds.”

You can help these birds during their nesting periods following signage rules put up by Council, keeping dogs off the dunes so nests and habitats are not disturbed, keeping below the high-tide mark, and keeping an eye out for shorebirds and nesting signs.

NAMBUCCA Valley Phoenix is proud to host a new exhibition called ‘Resilience: Advancing Despite Adversity’.

The community owned and operated social enterprise reopened on 20 November 2020, and to celebrate their one year anniversary are hosting this diverse collection of local artists and their work.

The exhibition also marks the two-year anniversary of the bushfire event that rocked our region.

Since then, we have all suffered under the impacts of Covid-19, flooding and many other obstacles.

Pippa Tabone, Coordinator, Nambucca Valley Phoenix said, “Our motto is ‘Together We Rise’ and it’s certainly been a struggle coping with recent natural disasters and staffing issues due to Covid-19.”

‘Resilience: Advancing Despite Adversity’ is a celebration of overcoming these challenges, and how as individuals and collectively we will advance together.

Men’s Shed investigate renewable energy options THE Nambucca Heads Men's Shed is working to investigate options for renewable energy in the Nambucca Valley, after receiving a grant through the Foundation for Regional & Rural Renewal (FRRR).

“We have secured some funding to support local notfor-profit (NFP) organisations to better understand how to participate in renewable

energy, lower electricity bills and be sustainable into the future,” said Bruce Anderson, Nambucca Heads Men’s Shed.

In the New Year, the Men’s Shed will consult with NFPs to learn about their priorities and ideas around renewable energy and lowering their emissions and bills.

They will be assisted in their work by the Community Power Agency, an organisation which supports local groups to benefit from renewable energy.

STRICT COVID-safe exam protocols were in place at 9.50am on Tuesday when 69,000 HSC students started the 2021 HSC written exams with English Paper 1.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said students had displayed an impressive resilience to push through the disruptions caused by the pandemic and be ready for their written exams.

“HSC students, with the support of their teachers

and families, have displayed incredible resilience and perseverance over the past eighteen months,” Ms Mitchell said.

“I thank them all for adapting to the myriad of challenges and disruptions and wish all of them the best of luck for their exams.

“This is an exciting time for students to demonstrate all of their hard work, as they finish their thirteen years of schooling.

“Most importantly, I encourage students to reach out and ask for help if they’re feeling overwhelmed.

“There are some great resources available on the Stay Healthy HSC website, or they can speak to a family member or a friend.”

High vaccination rates and mandatory COVID-safe exam protocols are an important part of the plan for keeping HSC students safe throughout the exam period, with all

staff supporting exams fully vaccinated.

Exam day protocols include: • School and exam staff to be fully vaccinated; • Masks to be worn by students and staff; • Students to check in and complete a health screening before entering exam rooms; • Students to be seated 1.5 metres apart; and • Well-ventilated exam rooms.

Macksville Police Station following enquiries related to a domestic violence incident at a Burrapine address the previous day.

A 32-year-old woman was assaulted during the altercation and sustained a facial injury.

The female victim was conveyed to Macksville Hospital by relatives for treatment. The accused man was released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 4/11/21.

The accused man was convicted and sentenced with a 12 month Conditional Release Order.

ON 30/10/21 at about 12:51pm Police were alerted to persons alleged to be stealing items at the old Macksville Hospital site.

Upon attendance Police stopped a 30-year-old man who was searched and a knife was seized.

The accused man was advised he would be receiving a Court Attendance Notice for the offence of: Custody of knife in public place.

The knife appears to be a WWII relic with German inscriptions, possibly having been issued to German paratroopers.

Police enquiries are continuing.

2. On 29/10/21 at about 7:15pm a 35-yearold man was arrested at

Regional Housing Taskforce report released AN independent report with recommendations for how the planning system can address housing supply and affordability in regional communities has been released by the NSW Government.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole welcomed the Regional Housing Taskforce’s report, which was underpinned by five key recommendations and 15 actions.

“We set up the Taskforce to provide advice on how to address housing pressure in the bush, and I thank them for their swift and comprehensive response on an issue that is affecting so many regional communities,” Mr Toole said.

“The report gives the NSW Government clear recommendations to consider how we can use the levers within the planning system to fast-track supply of shovelready land and deliver more homes for families across regional parts of the State.”

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the Government would now consider the recommendations and provide a response later this year.

“We will consider each recommendation in detail to ensure our planning system allows for a steady supply of housing throughout regional communities,” Mr Stokes said.

“The recommendations confirm there is no silver bullet solution and we must work in partnership with

industry and local councils to create more housing opportunities.”

Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the recommendations reflected the unique housing needs of regional communities.

“The pandemic has put new pressure on regional housing markets over the last year and I welcome the Taskforce’s recommendations for how we can alleviate that pressure with innovative, driven solutions,” Mrs Pavey said.

“The need for more temporary accommodation for seasonal workers is of particular concern in many communities and we will consider the Taskforce’s advice on how we can work with councils to deliver this.”

The report outlines five key recommendations for the NSW Government to consider, including: 1.

Support measures to bring forward a supply of ‘development-ready’ land; 2.

Increase the availability of affordable and diverse housing; 3.

Provide more certainty about where, when and what types of homes will be built; 4. Investigate planning levers to facilitate the delivery of housing that meet shortterm needs; and 5. Improve monitoring of housing and policy outcomes, and demand indicators.

Nambucca Heads Men’s Bowls Club Results

WELL another week has come and gone and another week of the weather man (Mr Doom and Gloom) telling everybody it's going to rain, be windy and batten down the hatches.

As usual plenty of wind but no rain and bowls played all week. Tuesday was the Women’s Championships first round of restricted singles.

Wednesday’s Mixed

triples, Thursday’s Women’s social bowls and Fridays Men’s Triples all had good fields however there is always room for more players and the more the merrier.

The club always welcomes new players in our fields so if you are interested in a game please contact the club for details.

Friday Men’s Triples had a bit of subterfuge happening with one skip using a different

set of blue bowls when he regularly uses another colour that really stands out.

Given he was not as successful with this colour it confirms the myth that your skill level is directly linked to the colour of your bowls.

Saturday had the Men’s 2 Bowl Triples Semi-finals played (no rain Mr Doom And Gloom).

Four strong sides played and two very good games

ensued.

J McCollom, P Meehan and Mr Blue Bowls Urquhart (using his normal yellow bowls) defeated R Hunt, C Brownlie and the good Hunt brother 29 -13.

B Coughlan, J Richardson and T Webber defeated P Ward, M Ward and R Riddell 24-20.

On Sunday the Final was played in front of a good crowd and what a game it was

with Blue Bowls Urquhart's team defeating Tye Webber's side 18 -17 with the game being decided on the very last bowl.

Congratulations to Tye’s teammates Bill and John who normally play in a lower pennant grade to their opposition.

The bowls you played through the Triples event will have a few of the higher grade player's looking over their

shoulders and rightly so.

Next Saturday we commence our Mixed fours championships. Our nominations list is up for The Xmas Triples and is filling up fast ,so get your teams in.

Top junior players named in Northern Heat representative program

By Aiden BURGESS NORTH Coast’s best junior Australian Rules footballers have been selected into the 2021/22 Northern Heat representative program.

An initial 30 players from the North Coast and North West regions have been selected into the representative program, including the first ever group of Under 15s players.

As a result of COVID restrictions, not all players were able to put their names forward at the same time.

This means squad selections will be managed on a rolling basis, with the first 30 players having been selected and others to be added as the program gets underway.

The Northern Heat representative AFL program comprises the best Under 15s,16s, 17s, and 18s players from the North Coast and North West regions.

The Heat program exists to build the footy IQ of players, transition them towards the

The program includes video analysis, strength and conditioning training, and match play against the age group teams of the Southport Sharks club that competes in the VFL. Based on the success of the Under 17 program since it was introduced three years ago, the decision was made to add an Under 15 squad this season.

opportunities for players from the North Coast and North West to develop themselves and take their game to the next level through their involvement in the summer program.

AFL North Coast Community Football Manager Paul Taylor said that the selected players will have to make a big commitment during the offseason.

“The Heat is an off-season program where we have to do plenty of travel just to get

They are fine on weekends, but suddenly have a headache, slightly sore throat and a bit of a sniffle on Monday.

Public Trustee removed as financial manager DUE to a cognitive impairment as a result of a medical condition, Wendy is the subject of orders granting the Public Guardian and the New South Wales Trustee and Guardian (‘Public Trustee’), management of her affairs.

Several years later, Wendy’s condition improves and she retains a solicitor to make an application, removing the Public Trustee from her management.

Wendy instructs her solicitor that she would like her aunt to make significant decisions regarding her affairs on the basis that she trusts her aunt to act in Wendy’s best interests.

Wendy has a substantial amount of money in her bank account.

She also wishes to relocate to more appropriate accommodation.

The Tribunal hears that Wendy’s aunt had experienced difficulties in communicating with the Public Trustee, who had considered her offensive, condescending and insulting.

The Tribunal finds that Wendy is still a ‘person in need of a guardian’ but that she has capacity to participate in the hearing, and that her wish, to remove Public Trustee as managers of her affairs, should be respected.

The Tribunal also finds that the appointment of Wendy’s aunt was in-line with the principles of the legislation which aimed to ‘preserve a person’s existing family relationships’.

The Tribunal decides that Wendy’s aunt is an appropriate person to manage Wendy’s affairs because she is ‘willing and able’ and can objectively act in Wendy’s best interests.

However, the Tribunal also decides that it is necessary to appoint Wendy’s sister as an alternative guardian as additional ‘assurance’ and orders are made that Wendy’s aunt and sister be appointed for 12 months.

The Tribunal also directs Wendy to obtain legal advice in relation to the execution of a Power of Attorney and Appointment of Enduring Guardian with a view to protecting her in the future.

OPINION Bring back the Neighbourhood Centre!

DEAR News Of The Area,

AS a Nambucca Heads resident I agree with Marlene Griffin's expression in NOTA (‘Wanton Destruction’ - Exploring the root causes’, p16, November 5 Edition) regarding disadvantaged youth issues.

It could be that there is a correlation between illiteracy, boredom, early school dropout and the absence of constructive alternatives.

A return of the pre existing Nambucca Community Neighbourhood Centre could help circumvent this disadvantage, as neighbourhood centres offer friendly faceto-face assistance and scoping with useful resources and non judgemental acceptance, for example information on the reading and writing hotline information or TAFE literacy programs.

Loneliness and social isolation are often challenges for senior citizens.

There are many diverse needs in this community.

This might be the first step to reach out, because neighbourhood centres are on the street, user friendly, accessible and immediate, unlike an alienating bureaucracy or a conflicted

private enterprise provider.

Census demographics define Nambucca Heads as a glaringly socially disadvantaged area that cannot justify the withdrawal of its former, well functioning, independent, community based, not- for-profit neighbourhood centre.

Why was it closed I hear you ask?

Currently there is nowhere in Nambucca Heads where a person can go to receive this personal assistance.

Neighbourhood centres have no other agenda other than to serve their clients needs.

Urunga, Bellingen and Coffs Harbour all have thriving neighbourhood centres and we need to restore ours to assist all people to optimise their quality of life and for equality and parity of services for this neighbourhood.

Let’s make this a local council election issue.

We need to put community back into community resources to be able to confidently assert that we are a real community.

Thirsty Merc Rocks into Nambucca

You just took me back to a childhood affliction I had for several years which manifested as a stomach ache, but was actually a chronic need to stay home and be doted on by my nanna.

This was a carefully orchestrated illness with symptoms commencing the night before.

I would leave a few mouthfuls of my dinner and say I didn't feel great.

This was a master stroke as it meant I could go to my room and read instead of doing the dishes. Halfway through the night, I'd go into my parents' room and say I felt like I needed to vomit.

I'd then go to the bathroom and make retching sounds, planting further seeds of doubt into the mind of my fatigued mum.

In the morning, I'd feign stomach pains, which was normally enough, but if she suggested taking my temperature, I'd ask to do it in the bathroom as I was feeling queasy, and then I'd run the thermometer under the hot water tap.

Then I'd be delivered to my nanna's house on Mum's way to work where I'd make a miraculous recovery by about 10am.

COVID is a whole new ball game.

Not just for kids, I suspect, but for anyone who doesn't want to go to their workplace.

The whole 'soldier on' concept has been replaced by a need to stay home with the slightest symptom and the only punishment is a Q-tip up the nose.

Life has never been better, except for those of us who already work from home and are now surrounded by kids and partners, who happen to make the worst work colleagues ever.

Perhaps make your home environment less inviting.

You could do up a jobs list with unappealing tasks or become one of those irritating home-schooling experts, so manically enthusiastic about their dodgy attempts at the curriculum, that little Karl and Trinity can't wait to return to school.

THIRSTY MERC, one of Australia’s finest live acts, will be performing at the Nambucca Heads RSL on Tuesday 28 December.

The band’s big break came in 2004 with the release of their self-titled debut album which included songs such as the iconic theme song for Bondi Rescue ‘In The Summertime’, and “Someday Someday”.

Nambucca Heads RSL Club have long been big supporters of musicians and local artists.

CEO Wendy Mills explained how iconic Australian bands are not only good for the club but the whole town.

Thirsty Merc have found their way into the fabric of Australia’s musical landscape with a catalogue that includes four critically acclaimed albums with over 250,000 album sales under their belt.

The band was a finalist in the APRA Song of the Year for ‘20 Good Reasons’ (which also reached #1 on iTunes in Australia) and have received five ARIA Award nominations.

Two more studio albums followed Slideshows in 2007 (#4 ARIA Album) and Mousetrap Heart in 2010 (#14 on the ARIA Album chart) which included radio staples ‘20 Good Reasons’, ‘Mousetrap Heart’ and ‘Tommy and Krista’.

Thirsty Merc marked the 10-year milestone since the release of their self-titled, double platinum debut LP with the announcement of their Acoustic Anniversary Album and national tour.

Dubbed ‘AAA’ the album is a collection of acoustic interpretations of fan favourites.

These recordings showcase the band’s exemplary level of musicianship and hearing these well-known songs with acoustic production highlights the world-class songwriting ability of Rai Thistlethwayte.

In 2015, Thirsty Merc released Shifting Gears, their first wholly independent and first new material in five years, and spent the next 18 months crossing the country on three extensive tours, running up thousands of Frequent Flyer points and sold out shows.

The first single ‘The Good Life’ was nominated for Rock Work Of The Year at the 2017 APRA awards.

If you think getting a pet is as simple as waltzing into a pet shop or local RSPCA and pointing at the dog you fancy through a window, or simply paying a breeder and rocking up six weeks after the due date to pick up your furry friend, you’d be wrong. If The Dog House Australia is anything to go by, acquiring a pet involves a meeting of minds – and that isn’t a bad thing at all.

Anyone watching this heartwarming series is reminded how important choosing the right pet is for a fruitful and affectionate relationship. Dr Chris Brown (pictured) narrates as the Animal Welfare League staff this week try to find a home for Missy the shih tzu, who was surrendered with her four pups when their owner died.

Now hitting the halfway point in its spy thriller story, some viewers are still holding on to hope that Red Election will deliver some outstanding plot twists, a few foolhardy performances from its stars, and some wise moves by its protagonists to foil the baddies. But it’s wise not to get too excited about where this lacklustre Swedish thriller is heading, because there’s nothing groundbreaking on the horizon.

Tonight, Zak’s (Aidan McArdle) special advisor, Nikki (Amy Shiels), talks to Adam (James D’Arcy, pictured above) about rigging the digital vote to keep Scotland in the UK. Meanwhile, William (Stephen Dillane) urges Adam to resign.

Smiles Galore as Season

There was a turn out of 80 Nippers and 27 volunteers, making a welcome start to the program which has been running since 1961.

The morning was beautiful and sunny, adorned by the wide, smiling faces of children, volunteers and family members looking on.
