TO many Australians, 14 February is only notable for being Valentine's Day but to a group of Aussies who go by the title ‘Nashos’ the day has a very different significance.

The day, 14 February, is officially known as National Servicemen’s Day and the Nambucca Valley will mark the occasion with a service of commemoration at the Nambucca Heads Cenotaph commencing at 11:00 am.

National Servicemen were Australians who were required by law to see out a period of time in the armed forces and this commemoration event is held to provide an opportunity for the community to reflect on this service and remember those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.

towns, has many locals shaking their heads.

In a radio interview with 2NVR’s Ben Walters last week, Nambucca Valley Councillor David Jones described how he had heard about these price differences and decided to conduct an informal investigation by driving

around and having a look for himself.

Cr Jones compared fuel prices, of the same brand, with service stations in Coffs Harbour, Urunga, Bellingen and the Nambucca Valley.

Pricing of fuel in Coffs Harbour was around 30 cents per litre cheaper than the same product in the Nambucca Valley.

Urunga and Bellingen prices were similar to Coffs Harbour prices.

“I am not making accusations

regarding the full pricing differences however I am concerned about it and I am putting a motion to council that we, the Nambucca Valley Council, write to the ACCC and invite them to investigate the petrol prices in Nambucca Heads over the holiday period 2022/23”,” Cr Jones told News Of The Area.

In this motion Cr Jones will also recommend that Council refer the evidence and the Motion to local members of Parliament and others

as seen fit by Council.

Cr Jones will present photographic evidence of the variation in fuel pricing based on his observations on 23 February 23.

Cr Jones points to how much high fuel prices affect the mobility of so many in the Nambucca Valley thus being detrimental to their quality of life.

“Social relationships are dependent on us being able to join together and losing our mobility prevents that,” 2NVR’s Ben Waters added.

Nambucca Valley to remember the Nashos on National Servicemen’s Day

FROM Page 1

The National Service scheme was introduced in 1951 with various changes in the conduct of the scheme over the years including closing it down for a time, however it came and went in various forms until 1972.

The scheme only applied to men and the 1951-59 version required those selected to undergo 179 days of military training in either the Army, Navy or Air

Force.

For the 1964-72 version it was legislated that National Servicemen could be sent overseas.

During this time Australia was involved in tensions with Indonesia, known as Konfontasi, and being drawn into supporting South Vietnam and the US in fighting against communist forces in Vietnam.

Men were selected using what was called the ‘birthday ballot’, in which names were randomly selected for National Service by their date of birth.

Australian Regular Forces were

heavily bolstered by these National Service men during the Vietnam War with over 15,300 of them required to serve in the war zone.

Nearly half of all Australians killed in action in Vietnam were Nashos and well over 1000 Nashos were wounded.

Over the years the Nambucca Branch of the Australian National Servicemen's Association have been an inspirational force for good in the community, raising money in support of many great causes on the Mid North Coast and conducting the Nashos Day Service each year.

However, dwindling numbers have seen the Nashos hand over the conduct of the service to the

Combined RSL sub-Branches of the Nambucca Valley.

News Of The Area spoke to Nasho, Dallas Dent, about the importance of National Servicemen’s Day.

“I think it is particularly important to remember the blokes that were called up for service, did not want to go but went and did their duty, then in many cases it affected them and their families for the rest of their lives,” Dallas said.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the Nambucca Heads National Servicemen’s Day service on 11:00 am Tuesday 14 February at the Nambucca Heads Cenotaph at the foot of the RSL Club carpark.

Rural Medicine students embark on clinical placements in Nambucca Valley

THE first student doctors from Charles Sturt University will commence their placements in rural locations from Monday 6 February.

By training future doctors locally, it is hoped many of them will stay as practicing doctors in rural communities experiencing healthcare shortages.

The Doctor of Medicine being delivered jointly between Charles Sturt University and Western Sydney University under the Joint Program in Medicine (JPM) will see third-year students commence the Rural Generalist Placement Program (RGPP) in areas such as the Northern Rivers Clinical Region, bringing their skills and knowledge to local residents in person.

Students will be based in towns such as Macksville, Nambucca Heads and Bellingen full-time from their third year and will remain there during their fourth and fifth year studies until the completion of their degree.

During this time, students will rotate between different hospitals, general practices and community health services, gaining valuable clinical skills while developing relationships and connections with the local community.

Head of Campus at the Northern Rivers Clinical Region, Associate Professor Karly Field, said it was a fantastic milestone for the School, students, and rural healthcare.

q Head of Campus at the Northern Rivers Clinical Region, Associate Professor Karly Field (in black scrubs), with third-year medical student of the Charles Sturt Doctor of Medicine Ms Caitlin del Solar at Macksville Hospital.

“The School of Rural Medicine is still in its early days having the first cohort of students commence their studies just two years ago,” Professor Field said.

“These students have already shown strength, resilience and a high level of clinical knowledge in getting to their third year, particularly having overcome the many hurdles associated with pursuing university education during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Professor Field said the approach of the placements was tailored to the needs and nuances of

rural and regional communities.

“The Rural Generalist Placement Program is an opportunity for students to experience the broad range of health services provided by rural generalists,” Professor Field said.

“The community and patientcentred approach to rural generalist medicine provides local people with access to a broad range of health services to meet the health needs of individual communities.”

Professor Field said the clinical services provided by rural generalists varied depending on the

health needs of the communities they serve and the available health infrastructure, and students would also learn skills that aid common health issues.

“Every placement will reflect the health priorities in each area while also assisting students to gain clinical medical skills to assist a range of conditions that often arise across communities,” she said.

The third-year curriculum covers clinical medicine, including general practice, medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and community health.

Professor Field said a Rural Generalist Placement will provide students with immersive learning at its best.

“Students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of rural generalist medicine and of the roles of rural generalists, including general

practitioners and specialists working collegially with them to benefit rural health outcomes in a community,” she said.

“Students will gain first-hand insights into the patient’s journey through the health system and the role each health provider contributes to patient care.”

Third-year student of the Doctor of Medicine, Ms Caitlin del Solar, said she was looking forward to the experience and clinical insights she anticipated the placement would offer.

“I really enjoyed my second year placement in the Northern Rivers at both Macksville District Hospital and the Darrimba Maarra Aboriginal Health Clinic in Nambucca Heads,” Ms del Solar said.

“It was great to develop some of my practical skills in the emergency department at Macksville Hospital and I felt I was able to learn a lot at the Darrimba Maarra Aboriginal Health Clinic both from the fantastic doctor I shadowed and the patients that attended the clinic.”

The scope of works includes repair works to the reservoir roof sheeting and fascia steelworks as well as the design and construction of a new access stair tower.

Fears that dog-nappers are preying on pets

A SPATE of missing dogs across the region recently has sounded the alarm that dog-nappers may be actively targeting particular breeds in the local area.

In the past week, three pedigreed intact male dogs have disappeared from Bonville, Corindi and Valla, and word has it that several others from Woolgoolga and Glenreagh can be added to the list.

It’s difficult to tell just how prevalent dog theft is in the area and while police are usually notified, there is little they can do unless owners can prove a pet has actually been stolen.

Even then, it is considered a ‘theft of possession’ rather than an abduction, without taking into account the emotional impact on a family of losing a much-loved pet.

Katrina McNeight and her young family were devastated when their two-year-old French Bulldog, Dougie, disappeared from the large backyard of their Bonville

home, even though he was out of sight from the road.

“We were all at home at the time, and Dougie was outside with our two other dogs – a labrador and a lab/ staffie cross, both lovely dogs, and we found it odd that they were still there while Dougie was gone.

“We got Dougie as a pup for our older son who wasn’t well, and both our boys just adored him; he’s always gone with us on holidays, camping and out on the boat.

“We door-knocked the area, asking if anyone had seen Dougie, and I rode a horse around paddocks for three hours in case he might have been hurt somehow and couldn’t get home.”

The family’s appeal for information on Facebook was shared more than 300 times with no helpful news forthcoming.

Dougie had been registered and listed with the council, so Katrina visited and had his microchip locked, which meant they would be alerted if anyone tried to have a new microchip inserted in New South Wales.

Unfortunately, there is no nationwide register of pets, either through councils

or vets, so there is no way to trace pets taken to another state.

After talking with other victims of dog theft as well as vets and the police, the McNeights now believe that Dougie was taken across the border with the intention of selling him online to unsuspecting buyers or on the black market.

Intact male French Bulldogs, Staffies and Cavoodles fit for breeding are particularly in the sights of these unscrupulous operators, who have no concerns for the distress they cause to the dogs’ families.

Katrina McNeight is calling for a nationwide database of dogs that is perhaps linked through vets.

It sounds like a great idea - but where to start?

In the meantime, the family continues their search while Katrina frets that Dougie has missed his injections and is offering a reward for his safe return.

If you know his whereabouts, be a sport: bring Dougie home.

q Dougie, a lovable two-year-old French Bulldog, has been missing for more than a week and his owners fear he has been abducted in a targeted theft.

Tragedy at South Valla Beach

About 5pm on Saturday 4 February 2023, emergency services were called to South Valla Beach, Valla, following reports an unconscious

woman had been pulled from the water.

Officers attached to Mid North Coast Police District attended and were told a 73-year-old woman had been swimming in the water where she appears to have suffered a medical episode.

NSW Ambulance paramedics attempted to revive the woman, however, she died at the scene.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

the atmosphere,” Nick told News Of The Area.

THE opening scenes of episode two of Australia’s Wild Odyssey ABC documentary on ABC TV shows Uncle Micklo Jarrett on Valla Beach.

The well-known local elder tells the viewer that Valla Beach is known in Gumbaynggirr language as Janingbirriny, meaning “golden wattle sap, bridge”.

Australia's Wild Odyssey is an extraordinary historical documentary uncovering the incredible connectivity within all of nature, exploring the roles each and every thing has within an ecosystem.

Wild Media’s three-part series has been aired on TV and is now available on ABC iView.

The connection that water has to the earth’s ecosystems is the thread through all three almost-one-hour long episodes.

The episodes play out over thousands of kilometres, starting at the water’s source, then following it as it transforms the lives of animals and connects ecosystems, stopping along the way to meet incredible creatures and find their role in the great web of life.

Director Nick Robinson was recommended to seek out Mark Graham, one of the Coffs Coast’s most passionate ecologists, and similarly to work with Uncle Micklo Jarrett.

“The message of the series is that the more that science and ecology has advanced, we’ve learned about the connectivity and interconnectedness of everything living on earth, from the bacteria in the soil to eagles in the sky and even

“That connectivity is mirrored very well in many traditional cultures and there’s a clear reason for that.

“They depended on nature to survive, and we do too, and it turns out that science points towards respecting nature and looking after it,” said Nick.

The project meaning for Uncle Micklo is also to show the critical importance of living in connection with the land, the way the Gumbaynggirr people lived in this homeland of theirs, the Gumbaynggirr Nation.

“Having my sons and grandchildren in the episode was a highlight for me, showing them the importance of their homeland and their culture,” Uncle Micklo told NOTA.

“We’ve got the ocean, rivers, rainforests, the mountains and we’ve

got all these beautiful creatures and plants.”

Choosing where to show the filmmakers, Uncle Micklo knew they wanted to take the documentary to a global audience, so he directed them to places he knew well for their astonishing beauty.

“Knowing my homeland, I suggested places where the lushness and beautiful energy of the land is best held - in Bellingen, Valla Beach and Ebor.”

Filmed on Valla Beach at sunrise paying his respects to the land, Micklo welcomes viewers to the episode.

Here Micklo is seen teaching his grandchildren to learn from the land.

“Everything in existence has a story and comes from a long, long way back, and those stories have been passed from generation to generation surviving and knowing the land,” Uncle Micklo said.

q Uncle Micklo Jarrett in the opening scenes of Australia’s Wild Odyssey on Valla Beach at sunrise, known in Gumbaynggirr language as Janingbirriny, meaning “golden wattle sap, bridge”.

An advocate for the sacredness of connectivity in ecosystems, Mark Graham told NOTA, “I feel immensely honoured to have the opportunity to speak about the processes of life and the global significance of our local forests in Australia’s Wild Odyssey.

“I feel truly humbled to be able to give a voice to the voiceless, to speak for the trees.

“I want nothing more than our society to understand and to act upon the critical and urgent need to protect our life support systems, to restore them where broken and to expand them so as to ensure a safer future and the wellbeing of all future generations.”

Mark extends his deepest gratitude to the entire Wild Pacific Media team “for their incredibly powerful and moving work” and to Uncle Micklo Jarrett for “the ongoing chance to work together for the wellbeing of country”.

provided, though anyone wanting to be involved in impromptu performances were encouraged to bring their own instruments, as young people were invited to perform, jamming with the ‘ArtWomb’ crew.

“Have no fear, you can do no wrong, come along and have some fun!” Nadine Smith from ArtWomb summoned all comers at the event.

Along with the provision of live music and ‘open mics’, the kids and adults participated in juggling, unicycling, hula-hooping and creative artworks including painting and decorating an almost full sized cardboard car.

Laura Stapleton, Carla Whittaker, Donna Waite, Liz Eid and their collective of children, visiting from Lake Cathie, took advantage of the events and the glorious weather to hold a sumptuous picnic.

“A really nice interactive way to get community together through art and music,” Rebecca Jamison said.

Miss Vintage Pin Up Australia 2022 Grand Final coming to Bowraville

AN event with a difference is heading for the Nambucca Valley when Miss Dale Velvet-Rose, Velvet-Rose’s Pin Up Dressing Room and Miss Vintage Pin Up Australia presents a Vintage Variety Show at the Bowraville Theatre on Saturday 18 February.

The Vintage Variety Show will feature the Miss Vintage Pin Up Australia 2022 Grand Final, consisting of eleven pin-up models with three outfits each, a burlesque performance by Northern Rivers Burlesque, Miss Rosa playing piano, a vintage fashion parade and a number of musical acts.

The last time Miss Dale Velvet Rose brought the Miss Vintage Pin Up event to Bowraville was in 2019.

“If you like retro fashions of the highest standard then this is an event you just can’t miss,” said Dale Hawkins, Secretary of the

Bowraville Arts Council.

Classic pin-up modelling stems from the golden age of the silver screen where tasteful sensuality and beauty influenced ideas of feminine fashion and inspired the type of art the US Air Force would display on their iconic WW2 aircraft.

The event is on Saturday 18 February 2023 from 12.30 – 3.30pm at the Bowraville Theatre

Women invited to support Nambucca Valley CWA Evening Branch

WOMEN of the Nambucca Valley are invited to come along to Macksville ExServices Club on February 21 at 6pm to support the formation of the Nambucca Valley CWA Evening Branch. Attendees are

encouraged to stay on for dinner after the meeting.

The Country Women's Association (CWA) aims to improve conditions for country women and children in Australia. Women living in rural areas have long felt

isolation, and suffered a lack of adequate health and support facilities.

The CWA grew out of the need for country women to have better services and a unified voice in a maledominated rural society.

From humble beginnings in 1922, the CWA of NSW now has over 370 branches, over 8,000 members statewide and is the largest women's organisation in Australia.

Women from the country and the city across NSW/ACT meet to connect with others in their community, fundraise and help set policies which

are lobbied for at a state level.

Members also enjoy cooking, handicraft, art and creative writing competitions as well as teaching skills to others.

From better digital connectivity to native vegetation reforms, CWA is at the forefront of improving conditions for country

women and children and will continue to provide a voice for country families across NSW.

The CWA is a group for women of all ages, it's a group that focuses on kindness to all and on helping others.

Every singer’s favourite singer is coming to Bowraville

ON Thursday 16 February at the Bowraville Theatre, the artist that is often referred to as ‘every singer’s favourite singer’, Emily Lubitz, will deliver a one night only performance that will seal the iconic Bowraville Theatre’s place as a mecca for the greats of Australian performing arts..

Emily Lubitz will be the fifth of six incredible music events at the Bowraville Theatre presented by Archive Mid North Coast over the past six months.

Honing her craft

while touring with indie-folk powerhouse Tinpan Orange for more than ten years, Emily has collaborated with such master musos as Paul Kelly, Martha

Wainwright, Clare Bowditch in the past with stunning results. However, it is her solo work that is most in demand.

In November last year Emily

Lubitz released her debut EP ‘Begin Again’, a cleverly produced collection of tracks, all but one, ‘Foolish Kids’, written by her, that carries listeners across a range of vibes, from the sad and sweet of ‘Sinking Ship’ to the pure lush pop feel of ‘Like I Do’.

Given the length and breadth of her career it is almost deceptive to refer to Begin Again as a debut record as it implies she is just starting out when in reality Emily Lubitz already has a revered status in the industry.

The rave reviews her live performances have been getting have made this gig the most heavily anticipated of Archive Mid North Coast’s six concert series at the Bowraville Theatre.

Opening for Emily Lubitz at the Bowraville Theatre will be contemporary folk duo, Saije.

Already familiar in the Nambucca Valley, Saije toured relentlessly in the later half of last year and it will be interesting to see the impact of such an intense tour schedule on the stagecraft of this uber talented pair.

The doors at the Bowraville Theatre will open at 6:30 pm on Thursday 16 February for a 7:00 pm showtime and thanks to Archive Mid North Coast and the NSW Government’s Reconnecting Regional NSWCommunity Events Program, tickets are only $5.

This concert is expected to sell out so secure your ticket by going to www. bowravilletheatre.com.au and follow the links to the Trybooking website.

Valla artist Kathy Edwards shines at South West Rocks

AS an artist, gardener, beach roamer and grandmother, Kathy Edwards was pleased to welcome patrons to the opening of her latest

exhibition titled ‘Dawn’ at South West Rocks Community Art Gallery (SWRCAG) on Saturday February 4.

From her new home studio in Valla, Kathy meticulously creates sublime

art, working primarily in watercolour, though she has lately been exploring mixed media techniques with delightful results.

“When I’m not in my garden art studio (She Shed) you will find me in overalls, fingernails full of dirt from digging in the garden as my

art studio is surrounded by my vegetable garden, I love growing our food,” Kathy remarked.

After working as a naturopath for 40 years, Kathy admits that she could no longer ignore her longsupressed urge to create artworks and discovered that

her art practice is a form of therapy for both herself and her students.

Nathan Edward, Kathy’s son, told NOTA, “Mum has always enjoyed painting and, as you can see, the Flannel Flower theme came about because of memories of market gardens that used to be in the Stuarts Point district.”

Her latest works display a talent for depicting the beauty of native florals.

“When I’m creating, it is an all-consuming process, that can take days of planning before I even begin to add

paint,” Kathy said.

“Once the painting has begun, it can take days of layers of transparent washes before I consider the work complete.”

Beyond this current exhibition, which runs from 30 January to 13 February 2023, Kathy plans to resume conducting workshops, sharing her enthusiasm and talent throughout the district.

Bellingen Memorial Hall reopens with a show

RAISING the roof metaphorically on the newly renovated Bellingen Memorial Hall, an event series of free shows has been announced for mid-March, following an extensive period of renovation of the old hall.

The multi-arts performance programme spans five nights from Monday 13 to Saturday 18 March (note, no performance on Tuesday 14) showcasing theatre, film, classical music, comedy and contemporary music.

Event organiser Phil Nicholas from Events Delivered said, “I was inspired to propose a five-night program by my experience working as an event producer across diverse artforms at London’s Southbank Centre in the mid-2000s.

“The refurbished hall will be capable of hosting a wide range of performances and community activities.

“I thought it was important that, following a ceremony by Gumbaynggirr Elders, we showcase several different artforms in a line-up comprising predominantly local performers and organisations,” said Mr Nicholas.

The grand reopening event series is proudly funded by the NSW Government via the Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program fund, with support from Bellingen Shire Council.

“Shire residents are invited to book free tickets to enjoy a suite of top calibre performances”, he said.

Shows include: Monday 13 March – Theatre (M 15+) – Minefields and Miniskirts, adapted by Terence O'Connell from a book by Siobhan McHugh, performed by Dorrigo Dramatic Club.

Based on the real-life testimonies of Australian women, Minefields and Miniskirts shines a light on five women's experiences during the Vietnam war,

evoking the era through word and song.

Wednesday 15 March – Film (M 15+) – The Velvet Queen, presented in partnership with Screenwave International Film Festival (SWIFF).

The film shows a mesmerising journey across the rocky Tibetan plateau looking for the elusive, majestic snow leopard, accompanied by a honeyed, atmospheric soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Thursday 16 March –Classical Music (all ages) – Andrea Lam comes to the stage through a partnership with Music Aviva.

Award winning pianist Andrea Lam blends modern technology and classical training and invites the audience to choose its own musical adventure and

determine the music playlist, selecting from options spanning J. S. Bach to Bill Evans.

The concert also features performances by the Coffs Coast String Quartet and the Valla Voices choir.

Friday 17 March –Comedy (18+) – Mel Buttle and Harley Breen, presented in partnership with Coffs Comedy, with MC Ben Stevenson and guests.

The two livewire Australia comics deliver observations on the absurd quirks of everyday life with confidence

and delight.

This evening is anticipated as a raucous double headline for an evening of sidesplitting stand-up routines showcasing the best local comedians.

North Coast Bulldogs under 16s kick off Andrew Johns Cup season

THE North Coast Bulldogs under 16s have made a competitive start to their Andrew Johns Cup representative season going down 14-10 to the Great Northern Tigers at Geoff King Motors Oval.

The Bulldogs took a 10-4 lead into halftime, with the game played predominantly in their attacking half as they dominated the first half.

The Tigers came out a different side in the second half and had the Bulldogs defending valiantly on their own goal line.

The attacking pressure finally broke through the Bulldogs resistance, as the Tigers levelled the scores at 10-10 with fifteen minutes to go, setting up a grandstand finish.

It would be the visitors who would start their season with a win, scoring with seven minutes left and holding out last gasp attempts from the Bulldogs.

Bulldogs coach Peter Wood took some positives away from the first-round

defeat.

“Even though we went behind, we didn’t drop our heads and we stuck to the task,” he said.

“Defensively we scrambled really well and there were no soft tries

scored.”

Wood reflected on missed opportunities in the match.

“We dominated the first half but we didn’t turn it into points, we had a number of chances and we didn’t convert,” he said.

“We put ourselves under pressure making mistakes, and we let them back into the match.”

The Bulldogs coach said the local Group 2 players were influential against the Tigers.

“We had seven Group 2 players in the team, and our two halves are from the Bowraville Tigers,” he said.

“Connor Corbett is also from Bowraville and he scored a try and set up another before he went off

injured, so that hurt us.”

The Andrew Johns Cup is NSW's regional representative competition for under 16s.

The Bulldogs now play the Macarthur Wests Tigers this weekend in Wauchope.

North Coast Bulldogs under 18s kick off Laurie Daley Cup season

THE North Coast Bulldogs under 18s have suffered a heartbreaking loss in the opening game of their Laurie Daley Cup representative season at Geoff King Motors Oval.

Up 26-0 with 26 minutes to go, the Bulldogs were the victims of a magnificent comeback from the Great Northern Tigers who came back from the dead to win 30-26.

The Bulldogs showed the form which saw them finish as runners up in last year's competition, their attack a well-oiled machine as they took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

They continued their dominance with two early tries in the second half to take a seemingly match winning lead.

But the visiting Tigers team had other ideas, scoring five tries in the final 23 minutes in a blistering display of all-out attack,

snatching an improbable win as they took the lead with just two minutes to go.

Bulldogs coach Matt Freebairn said the tough loss was a learning experience for his side.

“We probably needed to be more patient, and

we became complacent in defence,” he said.

“We needed to read the situation better and not switch off, and we will learn from our mistakes and then move on to next week.

“You learn more from your losses, and we’ll assess

our mistakes during training and move on to our next game against Macarthur.

“Credit to the Tigers, we knew it would be a tough game and it came down to the wire and now they have bragging rights for the next twelve months.”

Coach Freebairn outlined the makeup of this year's squad.

“We have six players coming back from the under 18s squad which finished runners up last year, and six from the under 16s team from last year who have been

promoted,” he said.

The Laurie Daley Cup is NSW's regional representative competition for under 18s.

Northern Heat players put in the hard yards over the offseason

AFL North Coast’s best juniors have been putting in the hard years over the Christmas and New Year’s period as part of a representative program.

Northern Heat players had excellent fitness testing results during a training session at Armidale.

Having been provided with a strength and conditioning program by Heat coach and former Sydney Swans staffer Matt Pine, the players knuckled down during the break and ground out the sessions.

Last weekend’s testing provided tangible results for the players to see the improvements made and to renew their focus ahead of the 2023 season.

In addition to the fitness testing, the squad worked hard in contested sessions with an emphasis on fast ball movement and second efforts to support the player with the ball.

These drills reflect modern AFL game play and are the way that the two squads will be asked to play in matches on the Gold Coast on Saturday 18 March.

Prior to the Gold Coast matches, a training session will be held at the Wiigulga Sports Complex at Woolgoolga on Saturday, 25 February.

This session will see the two squads continue to build on the game play principles that they have been introduced to throughout the program.

Nambucca Bowls Club

THE year is off to a flying start at Nambucca Bowls Club with social bowls, regular Club competitions and Championships and a new event to be launched on February 9.

January saw our Royal Tar Competition played in the evenings.

It is always a hotly

contested event but played in very friendly terms.

A number of teams stood out from the others and it wasn’t until the end of the final game the ultimate winners were determined.

The 2023 Champs were Ken Somerville, and Aaron and Doug Cedelland.

Thanks to Greg ‘Hoggy’ Hodge for sponsoring the event.

Our 2023 Mixed Fours Champs are Teresa and Peter Meehan and Kim and Graeme Porter.

Again, this was a tight series of games which showed just how strong our club is at the moment.

New bowlers and more experienced players all showed some of their best bowls.

The team of Janice Cedelland, Eliza Brown,

Bowraville Bowls

THE quest for the fours title began last Sunday with John Cochrane, Chris Wills, Graham Keys and Craig Doolan taking on Dean Roe, Tracey Armes, Paul O'Neill and David Johnson.

On paper it looked like a close contest and it most certainly panned out that way as the gallery were treated to a veritable classic at the Den.

CD's side were on fire early, with everyone contributing to establishing an eight shot advantage through twelve ends.

David's crew needed to lift and slowly clawed their

play.

Cocko, who led brilliantly all day, held shot but CD needed another to tie the game and didn't shirk his task as he drew a second with his first bowl. His second bowl fell just short of securing the win so both teams steeled themselves for an extra end where once again John dropped a bomb on jack and Keysey drew another to hold two.

O'Neill, who was fairly useless for much of the game, put down an on shot with his second that managed to split the two shot bowls and sit for the deciding score, David's team securing an 18-

turnout in very warm conditions and it was Ron Gleeson and Adam Laird who snagged the winning card after a big comeback against Tracey Armes and Greg Lamberth.

Neil Pollard grabbed the most touchers and Mary DalSanto was the week's lucky bowler.

Sunday 19 February sees Red Rock making their way to the Den to try and reclaim the coveted trophy which funnily enough is a large red rock.

At this stage there are around 35 bowlers coming so we need all hands on deck to make sure they go home empty handed.

(and again) Aaron and Doug Cedelland nearly pulled three awesome games in a row but just fell short to gain the Runners Up title.

Social bowls for our ladies has resumed, starting a bit earlier at 8.30am to avoid a bit of the heat on the hot mornings.

Our latest round was a day sponsored by Bernard Laverty’s, and we thank

them for their continued sponsorship of our Women’s Bowls Club.

The results were A. Duffus, M. Duffus, M. Smith and M. Montgomery defeated T. Meehan, J. Cedelland, S. Seckold and M. Flagg 24-9; D. Mann, T. Ryan, B. Jones and E. Flemming def A-M Johnson, E. Brown, M. Dwarte and P. Fletcher 18-16.

A number of our women and men bowlers will

undertake their National Umpires Course this week and become qualified umpiresanother great asset for our club.

And finally, our new Jack Attack Program will be launched Thursday February 9.

We hope to build on this event and host more competitions throughout the year

HYPOTHETICAL Taking a Legal Look

Strata nuisance and hazard claim

PETER has been residing in a strata unit for six years.

Barry moves into a unit five meters directly below him.

Peter soon notices that Barry smokes cigarettes on his balcony and that the smoke drifts up to Peter’s unit.

The by-laws of the strata plan do not prohibit smoking cigarettes.

Peter proposes a special resolution to adopt a by-law prohibiting smoke drift/ penetration but his motion is defeated.

Peter writes to Barry, stating that the cigarette smoke is preventing him from using his balcony and that it is causing health problems, including migraines, coughing and sleeplessness.

He states that he has to keep his windows and doors closed for 95 percent of the day due to the smoke drift.

Peter invites Barry to participate in mediation but Barry declines.

Peter commences action, seeking an order that Barry cease permitting cigarette smoke to drift into Peter’s unit on the basis that it causes a “nuisance or hazard” under strata legislation.

Peter files an affidavit, containing diary entries regarding the smoke drifts and a spreadsheet matrix recording more than 400 smoke drifts over two months, plotted hourly over 24-hour periods.

The matrix also records wind direction.

Peter’s affidavit also includes medical certificates, detailing his health conditions.

He references material from the Cancer Council, the World Health Organisation and an Oxford Academic publication stating that tobacco smoke can be detected up to nine meters away.

Barry’s affidavit provides evidence that he was not present in the unit on some of the occasions when smoke was identified.

He describes Peter’s behaviour as being aggressive, unreasonable and controlling. Barry also files affidavits from several other residents, stating that they do not experience the smoke drifts that Peter describes.

The tribunal states that smoking is not illegal and that there is a general rule preventing smoking within four meters of a neighbouring unit.

However, the Tribunal accepts that Barry is a frequent daily smoker and that cigarette smoke is capable of rising up to Peter’s balcony.

The Tribunal states that secondhand tobacco smoke is a serious health risk and ultimately orders Barry to cease smoking on his balcony.

Bike riders asked to make

presence known

DEAR News Of The Area,

I AM new to the area and not a young woman anymore. I am loving the many opportunities to enjoy the ocean and the river on foot with and without my dog.

I particularly love it that people get to enjoy being out and about on their bikes, a skill I never learned.

But, may I request that when approaching us from behind that riders use their bells please.

I, and others like me, could so easily lose their balance or the dog could pull us into your path and the results would be catastrophic. It would make such a difference to our mutual enjoyment.

It’s a tiny thing with enormous ramifications.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Regards, Joanna WALKER Nambucca Heads.

Thank you Macksville!

DEAR News Of The Area,

I have always felt that living in Macksville was being part of an extended family.

This was brought home to me when my husband, Ernie, died suddenly recently.

I would like to thank all those who attended the service, sent us cards, calls, flowers and messages and gave us a lot of support.

Also my sister Ruth who supplied the violin

music.

Gratitude and thanks to the staff at Macksville hospital who made everything so much easier, the staff and carers at Autumn Lodge, Lifetime Connect carers, and Dr Aye.

I will not be leaving our wonderful district.

Regards, Joye THORNE, Macksville.

Bring on the cashless gaming card

DEAR News Of The Area,

THE debate about the cashless gaming card is very revealing as well as utterly predictable. Labor wants a “trial” (kick the can down the road) while the Nationals want different treatment in regional areas.

Let us be clear why the cashless gaming card is being proposed.

The Crime Commission report listed, number one, that a cashless gaming card is needed to combat criminals using clubs and pubs to launder money.

If the revenue from these socially parasitic machines is to fall because they are not being used to support drug dealers and other

criminal enterprises then that is a good thing.

I find it extraordinary the lengths that the pubs and clubs will go to justify their failure to prevent themselves being guilty of benefiting from the proceeds of crime.

The Crime Commission has pointed out the elephant in the room.

The pubs and clubs are incapable of selfregulation in this regard.

Anything less than a mandatory cashless gaming card across the whole of NSW is to be complicit in the crime of money laundering.

Regards, Peter SOBEY, Valla.

DEAR Jasminda,

I RECENTLY had my oven professionally cleaned and when I showed it off to my husband he said he might get a lawn maintenance man since we can clearly splash around money for hired help.

I’ve never done it before and it looks amazing.

I don’t see the issue.

Dear Roxanne,

I’m with you on this one.

There are some jobs that are worth contracting out and the oven clean is right up there.

Nothing compares to the combination of caustic fumes, baked on grease, grimy sludge dripping onto the floor and the sheer time it takes to get the oven looking remotely clean.

I’m sure there are many other jobs you do that you don’t want or need to farm out so your husband’s dig is childish bordering on sexist.

Does he get his car serviced?

His mower repaired?

His suit professionally cleaned?

I personally find cleaning the oven so tedious that I’ve made a rule that any messy meals, like a roast, must be cooked on the outdoor barbecue.

The oven is for reheating or cake baking.

Maybe suggest to your husband that if he doesn’t want you to get an oven cleaner, you just won’t cook anymore. Problem solved.

FRIDAY GARDENING AUSTRALIA

ABC, 7.30pm

FRIDAY PENGUIN BLOOM

NBN, 8.30pm

Award-winning actress Naomi Watts gives a predictably moving and poignant performance in this tear-jerker, but a mischievous magpie almost steals her thunder. Surf-lover Samantha Bloom (Watts) is holidaying in Thailand with her husband (Andrew Lincoln, The Walking Dead) and their three sons when she falls from a balcony, becoming paraplegic. Returning home, she is consumed by grief for a year, until her sons bring an injured bird home. The scenes involving the inquisitive magpie are utterly charming and beautifully shot.

You don’t need to be a green thumb to adore this long-running gardening series. Featuring a tribe of passionate and interesting presenters, they are the secret to its success. Returning with its 24th season (or 34th year of episodes) tonight, effervescent host Costa Georgiadis (right) a and his crew – including new team members Tammy Huynh and Hannah Moloney – are in Melbourne’s lush Royal Botanic Gardens. The episode is flush with many varied segments, but highlights include Hannah chatting with a First Nations educator at the Botanic Gardens about the gardens’ history and Sophie visiting the plot of an acclaimed landscaper.

SUNDAY MATERNAL

SEVEN, 8.45pm

It’s generally the hard truths that make for the most gripping TV and this incisive new British medical drama shoots for the heart – and the head. The second episode fires up tonight: it’s not too late to become absorbed in the lives of doctors Maryam Afridi (Parminder Nagra), Catherine MacDiarmid (Lara Pulver, Sherlock, above) and Helen Cavendish (Lisa McGrillis). Set postpandemic, the three women are returning to work after maternity leave at the troubled NHS. Pulling no punches, and with a snappy script, it’s filled with relatable situations, with the drama turned up a few notches. Tonight, Maryam struggles to control her anxiety and keep working as a surgeon.

Snooker Skills

THE centuries-old game of snooker is alive and well in the Nambucca Valley thanks to the enthusiastic members of the Nambucca RSL Snooker Club.

In an era where younger members of our community are becoming less physically active and there is concern about the long periods our youth devote to ‘screen time’, the Nambucca RSL Snooker Club is recommending that

younger folk take up playing snooker.

The President of the Nambucca RSL Snooker Club, Mitch Gorrick, told News Of The Area, “Snooker is a compelling and addictive sport that promotes coordination and concentration and also has a competitive aspect that is a lot of fun.

“It is a game that so many have not considered playing and we want to let people know that it is for everyone

and we are particularly keen to see young people take up snooker as it is something they will continue to enjoy for their whole life.”

The Nambucca RSL Snooker Club meets on the second floor of the Nambucca Heads RSL Club and Mitch points out that it is well away from the poker machines and bars of the club and management of the Nambucca Heads RSL Club Ltd advise that juniors are more than

welcome in that part of the club building.

“The snooker tables used by the Nambucca RSL Snooker Club are the best in the region,” Mitch said.

The Nambucca RSL Snooker Club boasts a player that represents at the highest level of the sport.

Terry Jenner is a former State Champion and is still very active on the snooker circuit.

Members of the Nambucca

RSL Snooker Club concur that having Terry serves as motivation and inspiration and is a draw card for those wishing to learn about the game from the best players.

Every Saturday morning at 10:00 am in the Nambucca Heads RSL Club there is a structured competition that is handicapped so whatever level a player is at, they can enjoy the competitive aspects of the game.

In the future the Nambucca

RSL Snooker Club is also hoping to commence junior tournaments.

Each Wednesday morning at 10:00 am there is a more informal gathering of snooker club members where they share tips and techniques and enjoy social interaction with other snooker players.
