ATAR success for Tea Gardens’ Jessica Lutz AS we near the end of 2020, a year like no other in living memory, we need to take a step back and marvel the achievements of our Year 12 graduates, as they finish their academic year and start on the next phase of their life, seeking to achieve the goals that they have set themselves.

Man Assulted at Hawks Nest Approched by two men and punched in the face

POLICE are appealing for public assistance after a man was assaulted at Hawks Nest over the weekend.

About 11.30am on Saturday 2 January 2021, a 56-year-old man was walking along Curlew Avenue, Hawks Nest, when he was approached by two unknown men.

Police have been told one of the men grabbed the 56-year-old by the shoulder and demanded he hand over his wallet before punching him in the face, while the second man stood nearby.

The man fell to the ground while the

first man continued to assault him.

A short time later, a passing motorist stopped to render assistance as the unknown men fled the scene.

The bystander assisted the 56-yearold, who sustained minor injuries which did not require hospital treatment.

Officers from Port StephensHunter Police District were notified yesterday (Sunday 3 January 2021) and commenced inquiries.

The men are both described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in their early 30s, between 170cm-180cm tall,

with slim builds and short dark hair.

The first man is further described as having facial stubble and missing a number of teeth.

Police are also appealing for the male motorist who stopped to render assistance to come forward, as he may be able to assist police with their inquiries.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the nearby area or who may have dashcam footage or CCTV is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Face-to-face school holiday fun at the library

q The Summer Holiday Program will kick off in January across all library locations.

THE team at MidCoast Council Libraries is excited to be able to host their first face-to-face school holiday program since COVID-19.

The Summer Holiday Program will kick off in January across all library locations and is jam-packed with fun for kids of all ages.

From movie screenings, science exploration, kids bingo, bee hotel and Bunnings workshops, as well as arts and craft, everyone is excited to be able to welcome kids back into the libraries again for our school holiday program.

“It’s been a long, challenging year and the school holiday programs were something our team worked hard to adapt to ensure they could still offer the kids some fun,” explained Chris Jones, MidCoast Council’s Libraries Manager.

“And while the take-home packs worked really well, we can’t wait to be able to run the program in the library and interact with all the kids.”

All events are COVID safe with full supervision and social distancing rules will apply, with parents and carers asked to

follow directions from staff at each event.

The Summer holiday program began on 7 January 2021 and all event information can be found on the MidCoast Council Libraries website at www.midcoastlibraries.com.au.

WEDNESDAY MIDCOAST Council is looking to support organisers to bring some local events back in 2021/22.

Event organisers, planning on holding events across the MidCoast region between 1 August 2021 and 31 January 2022, are invited to submit applications for sponsorship from Council. Applications for sponsorship will be assessed based on the level of economic, social and cultural benefits generated through the event.

Not only do local events connect the MidCoast’s vibrant communities, they help put the region on the map, attracting visitors from around the country and boosting the local economy.

From art shows and music festivals, to sporting events, food, fashion and everything in between, events are a celebration of what the MidCoast is all about, and Council is committed to supporting these great events to deliver benefits to the area’s 90,000+ residents and visitors.

Depending on the scale of the event, four categories of funding are offered in the sponsorship program: Community event: Up to $2,000 Medium event: $2,000 - $5,000 Large event: $5,000 - $10,000 Iconic event: $10,000+

Applications must be submitted online using the event sponsorship application form, while organisers of 'Iconic Events’ should contact Council’s events team prior to submitting their application.

Applications open 1 January 2021 and will be accepted until 28 February 2021.

“We’re excited and hopeful that we can see some of our fantastic local events happening again,” said Robyn Brennan, Mid Coast Council’s Economic Development Coordinator.

In early December 2020 the Federal Parliament debated the Government’s bill to abolish the specialist, stand-alone Family Court and merge it into a generalist Federal Circuit Court.

There were many references by those opposing the bill to the advantages of the integrated Family Court of Western Australia over the changes proposed by the government.

It may not be widely known, but Western Australia is the only Australian state with its own Family Court, with 2 divisions which combine the functions of a superior court and a lower court and serviced by a single administration. We will keep you up to date as to changes to our Family Court, but in the interim we can report that the Family Law Amendment (Western Australia De Facto Superannuation Splitting and Bankruptcy) Bill 2019 passed both houses on 3 December 2020.

This Bill will give effect to a referral of power from Western Australia to the Commonwealth in respect of superannuation matters in family law proceedings

Free workshop for MidCoast creative businesses IF you are an advertising or marketing business, architect, graphic designer, visual or performance artist or an arts society or group, you’re invited to register for a free workshop in 2021.

The workshop is led by creative practitioners with extensive business skills, and aims to assist local creative businesses in developing business plans to ‘futureproof’ their operation, thanks to MidCoast Council and NSW Government funding.

The workshop will be facilitated by ‘Creative Plus Business’ founded by Monica Davidson, a social enterprise dedicated to helping creative people and arts organisations develop business skills. The two day workshop will cover the basics of business, as well as take a deeper dive into entrepreneurship, financial literacy, marketing, and

Most recently Kelvin Kong has been awarded the prestigious Menzies Medallion.

Kelvin graduated from NSW University in 1999 and

pursued further training in Paediatric ENT surgery.

He is also Australia’s first Aboriginal surgeon.

Associate Professor Kong was presented with the Menzies Medallion in recognition of his leadership in Aboriginal health service delivery, advocacy, and research.

in Australian Indigenous children.

“In particular, Kelvin has been instrumental in raising awareness of ear health problems in the Australian community and bringing this issue to the attention of governments. His work has had a profound and measurable impact.”

A/Prof Kong is also joint chair of the Hearing for Learning Initiative; a community-based training initiative that focuses on prevention through early detection of ear issues in young children by a locally trained and communitybased workforce.

Climate Change Impacts Local Fauna and Flora

“However, ocean research shows that the CO2 absorbed by the ocean is causing the ocean to become acidic, working as a sink in what is called ocean acidification.

“This has already begun having mass negative effects on marine life that need calcium to create shells; particularly clams, mussels, coral reefs, and small sea snails, which are having difficulty creating and maintaining shells in increasingly acidic waters.”

Local Red Cross volunteers awarded NSW Bushfire Emergency Citation

By Sandra MURRAY FOUR Red Cross Volunteers, Jennifer Kelly, Karen Markham, Narelle Murray and Joanne Pearce have been awarded the NSW Bushfire Emergency Citation for their service during the last fire season The citation consists of a rectangular silver framed navy-blue bar, inscribed with the years of the season, and featuring a red stripe to signify the bushfire event, and the Waratah State Flower.

The volunteers worked at the Taree Recovery Centre and provided onthe-ground and telephone support to fire impacted communities in Nabiac, Bulahdelah and the surrounds.

Narelle Murray told NOTA, “It was an amazing event to be part of. We helped the victims which was wonderful.”

Jennifer Kelly said, “We provided telephone support, helping victims to coordinate with counselling services, financial support, and government services.

“There were lots of sad stories but we saw resilience and great coping skills across the community.”

“Ocean acidification is just one of many issues impacting the ocean such as salinity changes, temperature changes and loss of the reflective ice cover.

“Global action is urgently needed right now to turn it around for the ocean and planet Earth,” Ms Pereira said.

THE 2021 PROPERTY MARKET LANDSCAPE “It’s been such a crazy year. How do you see real estate heading in 2021?”

HASN’T it just! So much has happened, with so much written – by myself included – about the market. It’s fair to assume the bushfires, then Covid-19 should have sent the market plummeting, but it didn’t. Real estate in our region has enjoyed a stellar year with vendors selling quickly and strongly and buyers making their lifestyle dreams come true.

Certainly, there was a frenzy where urbanites seeking a regional (better!) lifestyle rushed to purchase, sending prices sky high as they picked up properties on or before listing day. This has now tempered, but the selling prices remain strong as buyers understand they are securing quality properties that align with their changing needs. And make no mistake, Covid-19 has seen a very real realignment of lifestyle choices.

Consequently,demand continues to outstrip supply. Because of this, I predict the market will remain buoyant well into 2021. Little Terns Protected

DEAR News Of The Area,

I READ your story in News Of The Area, “Endangered. Little Terns Protected” (17 December, p.1) and thought it would be good to add some history.

A major reason for dredging the natural entrance (the ‘short cut’) was the fact that the sand bridge linked Corrie Island to the Wanda Woppa spit which allowed feral animals easy access to the Island.

There were foxes, dingoes, rats, cats and the iniquitous two-legged rat bags with pet dogs, all having a great time cleaning up the native animals and birds.

We secured about $750K from the Federal Government for the dredging program.

Interestingly, some of the bird group members caused a bad taste in our community by claiming the dredging operations would create a noise problem for the migratory birds

who generally arrive in early October.

They have a strong lobby and were successful in having the dredging program cut short and we lost the last two weeks.

That in turn resulted in the last two sand bars leading into the port being left untouched and we did not get the life expectancy from the entrance.

Don’t get me wrong, I also like birds, but there was never any acknowledgement from the group, apart from placing an embargo on the removal of sand from the stockpile while 10 small tern eggs were under incubation.

We did suggest that they erect a sign in small tern language, directing them to the beautiful and safe hatching area on now isolated Corrie Island.

From last week’s story, it looks like they must have.

Little Terns Vulnerable

DEAR News Of The Area,

IT was heartening to see the report about the protection of little terns nesting on Corrie Island Nature Reserve.

Many readers may not be aware that a few hardy pairs of little terns are also nesting now on the dredging spoil heap at the river mouth for the first time in several seasons.

This little colony is much more vulnerable than the Corrie Island colony.

The spoil heap is very attractive to holidaymakers as a vantage point and play

site and is readily accessible from both the beach and the river.

There is a single strand fence around the upper perimeter of the heap but there are few signs indicating the reason for the fence and no signs at all are visible from the bay side of the heap.

Let’s hope that despite the inevitable disturbance at least some of the chicks can make it through to adulthood.

Federal Government amend National Anthem lyrics

By Tara CAMPBELL IN a late night announcement on New Year’s Eve, Australia’s Federal Government announced a new amendment to the country’s National Anthem, coming into effect from 1 January.

Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, stated that Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, David Hurley, granted the Federal Government’s recommendation to change the anthem.

This change will amend the second line of Advance Australia Fair from “For we are

young and free” to the updated “For we are one and free”, recognising the culture of the Indigenous custodians of Australia.

The decision to change the National Anthem has been debated for a length of time, dating back to Prime Minister Bob Hawke in 1984 who recommended a modification to the Governor General.

Mr Morrison said, “While Australia as a modern nation may be relatively young, our country’s story is ancient, as are the stories of the many First Nations peoples whose stewardship we rightly acknowledge and respect.”

The announcement was met by appreciative responses, including Ian Hamm, First Nations Foundation chairman, and a

YOUR resolutions are admirable if not a tad boring, and I write this eating a banana and waving one arm in the air so I can trick my Fitbit into thinking I’m doing something physical.

My husband is in the garden and he thinks I’m waving him in for lunch, poor misguided soul that he is.

Given the very low statistics of people actually sticking to their resolutions, I wonder why so many of us start them (with good intentions) each and every year, only to fail miserably on around January 15 and crash and burn entirely by March.

I think we all have expectations that are just a bit outside the realm of reality, particularly at the moment with mask mandates in Greater Sydney, the insular peninsular now having no choice but to stick to themselves, and major traffic jams as states once again shut their borders.

Okay, I’m going to take one of your husband’s resolutions and see if it stands up to the tried and true SMART goalsetting formula.

S – Specific – Yes, his goal is specific, to him anyway, since only he truly knows how much alcohol he drinks. Maybe he could have made it more specific by quantifying it a bit better: ‘I will drink three more beers each week, up from my current quota of 21.’

M – Measurable – He will most certainly be able to measure his increase unless he gets rolling drunk and fails to keep an adequate tally.

Achievable – I think it goes without saying that your husband has set an achievable goal. So far so good.

Realistic – Yes, unless the bottle shops close (and given the current priority list with bottle shops a close second to medical centres in the old ‘essential services checklist’, that’s unlikely).

Time framed – This needs a bit of tweaking.

Is he drinking more for the entire year? For a couple of months? Until Parched March or Papal April or Light-of-day May or Immune June or Dry July or Sober October or Remember November?

Overall, I feel he is on the way to success with this resolution. In fact, I reckon while you are achieving less than 5000 steps, he’ll be slugging away on a longneck like a champion, glowing with a sense of achievement (or a bad case of Rhinophyma).

Set across three different decades, the series follows three women – 1960s housewife Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin), 1980s socialite Simone (Lucy Liu) and modern-day lawyer Taylor (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) – who have lived in the same Pasadena mansion and are all cheated on by their respective husbands. In last week’s premiere, Beth Ann and Simone learnt about their husbands’ infidelity, while Taylor’s open marriage was tested. Tonight, Beth Ann tries to spice up her relationship, Simone turns to a friend for solace and Eli (Reid Scott, Veep) grows suspicious about Taylor.

Combining psychology, intuition and hi-tech data systems, trial consultant Jason Bull (Michael Weatherly) defies belief when it comes to courtroom success.

However, former NCIS star Weatherly pulls off the role, based on the early career of Dr Phil McGraw, with such charisma that viewers seem willing to forgive a few implausible courtroom wins. The fifth season, fast-tracked from the US, has chosen to integrate the coronavirus pandemic into its storylines, with characters wearing masks, dealing with restrictions and socially distanced jurors.

While it’s not a tactic that will work for every show, it adds fresh challenges here.

CURRENT Australian Lawn Bowls Jackaroo and Australian Champion of Champions, Ray Pearse, will swap the bowls for a bike on Friday 15 January to raise funds and awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.

Along with best mate and bowler at Cabra Bowls Group, Ben McCall, Pearse will cycle over 800km from Sydney to the South Tweed over the course of a week.

The pair have teamed up with Gotcha4Life, a non-for-profit organisation focusing on mental health, to challenge themselves and raise awareness about dealing with mental health issues.

“We first came up with the idea early in the COVID lockdown period seeing all the push-up challenges (for mental health) on Facebook,” Pearse said.

“We thought of doing something a bit bigger, so the idea of the bike

ride was born, and we started our campaign Speak Up 4 a Ride of a Lifetime.”

Pearse said he has a personal connection with the issues of mental health and suicide, driving his passion for the fundraiser.

“People don’t realise how close in your own backyard it can be.

“You hear stories all the time about it but until it hits your circle then it starts to hit home,” he said.

“We have a friend of a friend who lost two people on the same night to suicide with no relation between the two.

“To see those friends struggle hurts so we really hope we can make a difference with what we are doing.”

Pearse said he hopes to make an impact with the event.
