LONG serving volunteer lifesavers, Jan and Tony Logue, have both been awarded the Lions Club Citizen of the Year this Australia Day, in acknowledgement of their 40 years service to the community.

The Award Ceremony was safely conducted at the newly renovated Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).

Proceedings commenced with long serving SLSC member and Educator, Debbie Booth, stating, “We are many, but we are one, sharing backgrounds, ages, place,

“Jan and Tony have an amazing number of Surf Lifesaving Awards.

“They foster and train youth in the surf lifesaving movement.

“Jan is an inspiration to all members, particularly women and girls, assisting them to achieve their goals by providing advice, encouragement, and support.

“Jan received her Bronze Medallion in 1988, making her one of the first women to receive this award in Australia, a pioneer.

“In the 1990s, Tony and Jan helped raise over $10,000 for a young boy with brain cancer. The money went towards his medical costs enabling him to be treated by Dr Charlie Teo. “The young boy also had a dream of winning a gold medal at a SLS championship, but due to his medical condition this was not possible.

“That same year, the Logues went to the World SLS Championships in Europe and competed. Tony became a triple world champion and Jan a world champion.

“On his return, Tony presented his gold medals to this young boy without telling a single soul.

“Jan and Tony’s commitment to the SLSC and our community is a huge achievement, worthy of recognition and thanks from our community.”

President Nicole Young told NOTA, “We are honoured to share this award with them today as a club and with our life members present. Thank you to the Lions members for this award.”

Happy locals enjoy new BBQs at Winda Woppa Reserve

By Sandra BOURKE DESPITE the stormy weather, a group of enthusiastic locals took to the new gas BBQs at Winda Woppa Reserve with sausages and onions, giving a tick of approval to their recent installation by Mid Coast Council.

The BBQ event brought a local crowd safely together, providing an outdoor opportunity for them to connect and share updates on health, holidays and events.

Organiser, Gina Harbach, told News Of The Area,

“We would like to thank Councillor Len Roberts who really supported the new BBQs being installed at Winda Woppa Reserve.

“We were concerned that they would not be replaced when they are so important for locals and visitors alike.

“The Winda Woppa reserve is a great place by the river for a BBQ with family and friends.”

The new gas BBQs are being installed by the Mid Coast Council to upgrade the facilities in the Winda Woppa reserve.

MidCoast Council’s new grants hub NAVIGATING the world of grant funding just got a whole lot easier for local community groups and businesses, with MidCoast Council’s new grants hub.

The newly launched web portal, established through a partnership with Grant Guru, provides instant access to the most comprehensive compilation of funding opportunities across Australia.

As well as currently listing over 1,126 funding opportunities worth over

$200 billion, the site provides helpful advice on applying for grants to improve your chance of success.

“Helping community groups and local businessowners access grant funding is an important part of what we do to support growth and build capacity in our region”, explained Lyndie Hepple, MidCoast Council’s Community Development Co-ordinator.

“This new service is a

great way for locals to keep updated on what’s available to help them get their project off the ground.”

Grant funding provides a vital boost to local businesses, community groups, sporting clubs and not-for-profit organisations, helping them to enhance services, events, and facilities available to the MidCoast community.

The new online grants hub is designed to uncomplicate the process of finding and applying for grants, allowing users to quickly decide if their organisation or group

Random Breath Tests and PCA Offences Over the Australia Day period 22 to 26 January 2021 Port Stephens-Hunter District Police conducted a total of 2,226 RBT throughout the District and charged 12 Persons with Drink and Drive Offences.

OVER the Australia Day period 22 to 26 January 2021 Port Stephens-Hunter District Police conducted a total of 2,226 RBT throughout the District and charged 12 Persons with Drink and Drive Offences.

Heatherbrae/Eagleton High Range PCA, involving a 44-year-old male from Port Macquarie.

About 6.50am on 24/01/21 the driver of a vehicle was observed in Heatherbrae, to be "all over the road", crossing the centre line and the verge line.

A witness had contacted Triple Zero and while speaking with police, the offending vehicle failed to negotiate a slight bend and continued straight, driving through and over the median strip, colliding with a tree, then continued into the south bound lane for a short distance before returning to the northbound lane.

About 7.10am police arrived at the location and spoke with the witness and the driver.

The driver was breath tested, returning a positive result and placed under arrest for the purpose of a breath analysis and conveyed to Raymond Terrace Police Station where the

driver underwent a breath analysis which returned a positive High Range PCA result.

The driver was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice and had their licence suspended.

Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area On Saturday 23/1/21 police from the Port Stephens - Hunter PD conducted an interagency operation in the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest area.

The operation involved Port Stephens Hunter Sector Police, Marine Area Command, Traffic and Highway Command, NSW Maritime, NSW Department of Primary Industries, Midcoast Council, and NSW National Parks and Wildlife.

The operation encompassed the both townships as well as the waterways of Port Stephens, Myall River, Myall Lakes and associated campgrounds, Jimmy's, Bennett's and Mungo Beaches, and offshore to Broughton Island.

During this operation, police targeted driving offences, permit related offences, boating and PWC compliance, and anti-social behaviour with a focus on positive community interaction and education

During the operation, police conducted 227 random breath tests, issued 8 cautions for beach permit infractions, with 3 infringement notices issued.

Across the agencies a further 29 infringement notices were issued for relative offences and 1 traffic related charge.

Police were involved in numerous positive community interactions throughout the day with police presence warmly received by the general public.

MidCoast Ageing Strategy MIDCOAST Council is developing its inaugural Ageing Strategy and it’s calling on the over 55s of the region, along with carers, aged care workers and organisations, to contribute.

It’s no secret that the MidCoast is home to a large number of seniors, with more than half the population being over the age of 55.

Council believes the strategy will be vital in ensuring that the needs of older people can be met now and in the future.

Council anticipates that consultation will identify a number of areas for improvement that are not within its

responsibility. As a result collaboration between all stakeholders will be key to successful implementation of the strategy to ensure success in making MidCoast an age-friendly community.

“Once this strategy is developed it will be a tool for future growth for our entire community,” explained Chris Jones, Council’s Manager of Libraries and Community Services.

“We’re looking for feedback from local people aged 55 years and over, a carer or family member of an older person and local aged care workers, to ensure the strategy is a true reflection of our community, so we

encourage everyone to have their say.”

The strategy will focus on five priority areas, health and wellbeing, working and retiring, housing choices, getting around and inclusive communities.

Council has three different surveys online to shape the strategy.

The main survey targets people aged 55 and over, and separate surveys seek feedback from carers, family and aged care workers. For anyone who is short on time a condensed version is available.

“Ultimately we want this strategy to guide us and help to improve the lives of our older residents. It’s vital that residents tell

us what’s important to ensure we consider it for the strategy,” said Chris.

IT’S not too late to apply for sponsorship for any local events happening between 1 August 2021 and 31 January 2022.

MidCoast Council’s latest round of event sponsorship opened in December with applications being assessed on the level of economic, social and cultural benefits generated through the event.

From music festivals, sporting events and art shows, through to food, fashion and performance, Council is committed to supporting great local events, especially after the challenges of 2020.

“Events were one of the first things to be cancelled when Coronavirus hit and all parts of the industry have suffered, so we are really looking forward to being able to support great local events again in 2021/22,” explained MidCoast Council’s Economic Development Coordinator, Robyn Brennan.

“We know there’ll be some changes to the way these events are run and we’ll all need to adapt to a new normal. Events are very important to our local communities.”

Depending on the scale of the event, four categories of funding are offered in the sponsorship program:

Community event: Up to $2,000 Medium event: $2,000 - $5,000 Large event: $5,000 - $10,000 Iconic event: $10,000+

Applications must be submitted online using the event sponsorship application form, while organisers of 'Iconic Events’ should contact Council’s events team prior to submitting their application.

Applications will be accepted until 28 February 2021.

All applicants are required to submit an event budget using MidCoast Council’s event budget template, available on the website.

MIDCOAST Council is preparing a regional flying-fox camp management plan, in conjunction with the NSW Government, and is seeking assistance from the local community.

The plan will focus on local flyingfox camps at Cocos Crescent Reserve and Karloo Street Reserve at Forster, Pacific Palms, Smiths Lake and Hawks Nest.

Council’s management plan will guide flying-fox management at each camp, including reducing conflicts with adjacent residents.

Council’s Environmental Projects Officer, Nicholas Colman said living next to flying-fox camps can be challenging at times for neighbouring residents.

“Camps can be noisy and smelly places, but we’re hoping that establishing this management plan will make life easier for local residents while protecting important biodiversity,” Nicholas said.

“The plan will help Council obtain approvals for on-ground works and apply for State and federal funding.”

There is a number of community engagement sessions planned throughout February to inform the community about the project and allow input and feedback on the management options.

The first of the sessions is a Zoom online information session from 6.30pm to 8pm on Monday 8 February, followed by pop-up consultation sessions on site at each camp, as well as an online survey ‘Flying-fox Engage’ which will be open throughout February.

DEAR News Of The Area,

OUR thanks to Leon Katz who was able to get these shots of the Shortcut on Australia Day, hopefully a sign post for the next dredging campaign.

The first shot at low tide shows the river is still tainted from the heavy rainfall some months ago.

The build up of sand between the rock wall is significant and likely to close off the

flow in near future which will improve flow through the natural channel.

The other shots clearly show the sand build up between Corrie Island and the ballast wall.

Their removal should have two benefits in protecting the exposed Corrie shore (coffee rock foundation) and improving water flow through the natural channel.

It is the sand islands in the middle of the outlet which should be the target of the next dredging campaign.

Their removal will extend the life of the opening, sand spoil could be used to protect the Corrie shore as well as used on the stockpile.

Leon has suggested he should be able to provide a monthly series of shots which will be most appreciated.

AT the start of the school year, suburbia bursts with the sound of screeching violins, vocal calisthenics, terrible recorder renditions of London's Burning, and tuneless trumpet attempts of Skip to My Lou, which must be the most boring song of all time.

I'm blaming over-zealous band and music teachers with their misguided advice that everyone is musical if you give them a chance.

Tell that to Milli Vanilli.

Tell that to all those failed attempts on Australia's Got Talent, but Not This Week.

How many of us have sat through school concerts with the lead role performed by a kid who was selected because his mum sits on the P&C and gives great end-of-year Christmas presents.

Don't let little Sarah be fooled, Kevin.

It will just lead to a lifetime of disappointment for her and at least 12 years of hell for you.

Is she sporty?

Is she artistic?

These are extra-curricular activities that are a lot easier on the ear and probably the wallet, given you will have to pay for supplementary voice coaching.

One of my daughter's friends was told she could sing, and every car trip was a nightmare as she warbled and trilled her way from Port Stephens to Newcastle thinking she sounded like Mariah Carey when the reality was closer to the Eastern Screech Owl. Turning up the radio didn't help.

She knew the words to everything.

Should that be encouraged?

Go with your gut, Kevin.

Perhaps let your daughter research the average earnings of musical entertainers and then give her a golf club or a tennis racquet.

The clever casting crew behind this crime-drama did an excellent job of nabbing British heartthrob Ioan Gruffudd to play the lead. Sometimes you just need a wildcard to be the point of difference among all the other crime-dramas out there (and let’s face it, his smile doesn’t hurt, either). Not that you’ll see much smiling in this season three return as Dr Daniel Harrow (Gruffudd) investigates the death of a young man who claimed to be his son. The news shocks those close to him, but Harrow is pushed to reveal a chapter of his past. But just like in many of the cases his team investigate,

After watching the first few episodes of this mad dash around the country, you may find yourself in two camps: 1. You are inspired to plan an action-packed (albeit, local) adventure.

2. You’re tired just thinking about it. Now in its fifth season, <i>The Amazing Race Australia</i> has brought together a pretty diverse bunch of travellers who are all keen to get their hands on the $250,000 prize. Cancer Doesn’t Stand a Chance STORY STARTS on BACK COVER, Page 20 Nicki told News Of The Area her sister in law lost her battle with cancer after T-cell lymphoma struck in 2020, only five weeks after diagnosis.

“Everyone has a story though, Rita has an aunty fighting the good fight, Marshy lost a friend, Neale beat prostate,” Nicki said.

The group has now raised more than $4,000 which will support Love Your Sister’s work to support families and find a cure.

The ordeal begins at Little Beach in Nelson Bay and concludes at Seal Rocks with stops at Mungo Brush q

and Neranie in between.

Extra friends have committed to joining the aquatic expedition along the way with support from a land crew following along the shore.

Nicki told News Of The Area, “All the proceeds raised will go to Love Your Sister,” which aims to vanquish cancer.

“The first two days will be tough, but we may have to carry the boards to make it to the finish line at Smiths Lake,” she said.

Football back for 2021

Football is back on the Myall Coast in 2021.

FOOTBALL is ready and raring to go in 2021 for what is planned to be the biggest season yet.

Registrations across the country opened on Monday for the 2021 season, and state governing body Northern NSW Football expects the game to return bigger and better than ever, despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic last season.

Football managed to navigate COVID-19 challenges successfully in 2020, with many players and clubs getting back on the pitch safely to complete a shortened but fun-filled season.

Northern NSW Football CEO, David Eland, said Northern NSW Football and its seven member zones look forward to going ‘back to normal’ in 2021.

“It’s an exciting time.

The buzz around football and the start of the new season is really positive,” Eland said.

Getting back on the pitch in 2021 is the Bulahdelah Bullets Soccer Club who, being the successful recipients of a lighting upgrade, are now in a position to host night games.

This will allow the Club to play Women’s and Over 35s football at home at Bulahdelah.

The whole of the Pennant season was aborted last year, due to Covid, so it is hoped that it will be completed this year without incident.

CANCER has had it’s last laugh according to six intrepid adventurers who are Standup Paddle Boarding 40km up the Port Stephens and Myall coastline to promote awareness and raise money for charity.

After losing close relatives and fighting off their own cancer battles, Nicki Day, Rita Boys-Smith, Ronald Cropper, Neale Martin, Marshall Kane and Charne Lindsay decided enough was enough.

The team have undergone strenuous training for their three day paddle which starts on 11 February.

The SUP’n it Forward team has been raising money to conquer cancer since 2017 and remind their community to get a check before it's too late and find a cure.
