37 years of community service

By Annette YARNOLD FOR almost four decades, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Meals on Wheels (MOW) has been providing a much-needed service to the older residents in the area.

The organization has grown considerably from its humble beginnings in the Uniting Church Hall kitchen in Tea Gardens in 1984.

In the first year of operation about 100 meals were produced and delivered per week, compared to about 500 meals now.

There have been many changes and improvements made over the past 37 years.

Within the first ten years MOW outgrew the Uniting Church Hall kitchen and the Council received a grant in 1992 to build a new kitchen

Meredyth Rae, the Office Manager at Tea Gardens Hawks Nest MOW began as a volunteer driver at Bulahdelah.

Meredyth has seen many changes in the 20 years she has been involved in the organization.

After initially volunteering as a deliverer, she spent many years coordinating the Bulahdelah service, then was offered the position of Office Manager at Tea Gardens Hawks Nest four years ago.

She explained that the biggest change has been the introduction of frozen meals.

“I baulked at frozen meals at first, especially for Bulahdelah, but they became more popular with the clients.

“From a delivery perspective it is much easier to keep meals frozen and much easier to deliver.”

Initially only Tea Gardens Hawks Nest, Pindimar and Bundabah received meals before Karuah joined in 1988 and Bulahdelah with frozen meals in 2009.

Hot meals are still delivered on a Monday to Tea Gardens Hawks Nest.

The cost of the meals were $2 in 1984 and after a few minimal increases over the years are now $8 and $10 with a dessert.

Winsome Dorrington has been volunteering at Tea Gardens Hawks Nest MOW since 2003. The biggest changes she has seen is the growth in numbers of meals and clients.

“When I started, we didn’t have the quantity of meals we have now.

“We are providing so many more meals than we used to.”

“Most meals for Meals on Wheels are cooked commercially these days.

“We are one of very few that do our own cooking and the meals are lovely.”

Winsome cooked in the kitchen until 2-3 years ago.

“I was cooking every week from 7am until lunchtime.

“When I turned 75, I decided to just deliver the meals with my husband Laurence,” she said.

Judy Poole is another volunteer who is passionate about the service.

So much so that she has been volunteering for four years in the kitchen as well as delivering meals and is also on the committee.

She loves the flexibility of volunteering and the interaction with the clients; however, she is most impressed with the running of the kitchen.

“The thing that has impressed me from the beginning is the care given in preparing the meals, it’s amazing.”

Judy said that approximately 200 meals per morning are prepared with the chef making sure everything is done correctly.

“The presentation is everything as well as the nutritional value. It’s a labour of love, I guess.”

With the increase in meals to deliver, the introduction of meals available to purchase at the kitchen door began about five years ago and has been very popular.

The expansion of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Meals on Wheels over 37 years is a tribute to all of the organizers and volunteers who work tirelessly to provide this much needed and important service to the older residents in our local area which helps keep them living in their own homes for longer.

on Wednesday 10 February.

In presenting the budget, Council’s Director of Corporate Services, Steve Embry explained that Council considers its financial and budget perspective from two perspectives – a net budget result and a net operating result.

“The net budget result for the current financial year is projected to be a surplus of more than $4 million.

“The net operating result for the year is projected to be a deficit of $10 million.

“The net operating result includes non-cash items such

as depreciation.

“Accounting for the depreciation of Council assets, which is a requirement of accounting standards, has an impact on our projected bottom line.”

Mr Embry said the accounting of depreciation is an issue for the long-term sustainability of all councils and is something that significantly impacted on the former councils.

“We are developing a medium-term financial plan to address the funding of asset depreciation over multiple budget years.

“If depreciation is not funded this can lead to an

infrastructure renewal backlog. Importantly we have invested heavily in road infrastructure since the merger through the initial $30 million road program and the current $100 million road program, which reduces the backlog of infrastructure works.”

Mr Embry said the other impact on the net operating result projection at this time of the year was the way incomplete projects from the previous financial year are treated.

“While the funds to match this expenditure are placed into cash reserves, until the projects are completed

they are required under the accounting standards to be treated as expenditure without matching income in one of the quarterly financial reporting statements.

“This results in a projected net operating result deficit for the financial year 2020-21.”

However, Mr Embry explained, when the impact of this, and non-cash items (such as depreciation) are excluded the net budget result projects a $4 million surplus.

Delay in issuing rates notices and water accounts Council has also advised ratepayers that while the February rates instalment

notice has yet to be issued, this is expected to occur in the coming weeks.

Ratepayers paying by instalment will be given the usual 28 days to pay from the date of issue of the instalment notice.

“Shortly before Christmas we consolidated our four former rating systems into a single system. We are currently going through a process of ensuring all the data has transferred correctly before issuing rates instalment notices.

“While we appreciate this is not ideal, we do want to ensure the notices are correct to save undue

inconvenience for the community.”

Water customers are also being impacted by the system’s consolidation and those residents who are normally billed in January are also expected to start receiving their delayed accounts over the coming weeks and will also receive the usual 28 days to pay their account.

This was our fifth ‘Buy my Wardrobe’ and it will not be our last.”

The Pearls of Port Stephens are hoping to hold another similar event at the popular Myall River Festival which will hopefully run later this year.

In a well-publicised decision of the Supreme Court in late 2020, a Sydney couple were successful in claiming an inheritance of a multimillion dollar harbour side estate based on a promise by their elderly neighbour (Moore v Aubusson).

The plaintiffs purchased a property in the exclusive suburb of Birchgrove in 1999.

After moving in, they developed a close relationship with their neighbour who owned two adjoining properties.

The neighbour's husband had recently passed and she had no children or other close family.

The plaintiffs had intended to renovate their property however, the renovations would have impacted the neighbour's water views. The plaintiffs claimed they reached an agreement with their neighbour that they would alter their planned renovations so as not to affect her views and would look after her until her death.

leave them her properties under her Will.

The plaintiff's altered their renovations and looked after their neighbour until she died in 2015. The plaintiffs were therefore surprised to learn following her death that the neighbour had only left them a gift of $25,000 in her Will.

Although the Court found the 'agreement' was not sufficient to amount to a contract, it did find that a promise had been made, the plaintiff's had acted in reliance on that promise at the expense of their own commitments and that they had suffered detriment as a result.

The Court therefore determined that it would be unconscionable for the promise not to be enforced and determined that pursuant to the legal doctrine of proprietary estoppel, the properties should pass to the plaintiffs.

Supporting a species in crisis

THE koala is iconic both here in Australia and internationally.

The bear, that isn’t a bear, is rare and hard to spot.

Its population has been decimated by recent bushfires.

Add to this the high incidence of illness and the impact of loss of koala habitat we have a species on the brink.

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest alongside Port Stephens is one region on the NSW Mid North Coast where the koala population is still evident.

The Myall Koala and Environment Group fosters preservation of the locally endangered koala population as well as being actively involved in protecting the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens environment.

To this end there is a dedicated group of local volunteers who are actively making a difference.

Ian Morphett told News Of The Area, “We plant koala feed trees in public reserves, while encouraging residents to plant koala food trees on their own properties by our annual tree giveaway program at the Myall River Festival.”

The group is also actively involved with removing invasive weeds such as Bitou Bush, Lantana, Asparagus Fern and Honeysuckle from reserves and public land.

They also rescue sick or injured wildlife, particularly koalas.

Importantly the Myall Koala and Environment Group maintains a database of koala sightings via our telephone hotline.

“To report a koala sighting please call our sightings hotline answering machine on 4997 0878.

“For any sick or injured wildlife

The volunteers are also actively participating in the Koala Recovery Plan managed by MidCoast Council, NPWS and other agencies and they are lobbying Council and the state government over inappropriate developments such as those involving excessive tree removal, destruction of core

koala habitat, severing of wildlife movement corridors or other environmentally damaging proposals.

The group also delivers funding and participates in koala surveys identifying key koala habitats in the Myall Coast region.

Who Cares for the Carer?

Caring can be overwhelming.

In our community there are many people who are quietly making very real differences to the lives of others.

IN our community there are many people who are quietly making very real differences to the lives of others.

They are our carers.

They are literally performing an ultimate act of love, for a partner, a parent, a child or even a close friend, it may be short term or a journey with no end in sight.

They give of themselves, and often this comes at a personal cost.

A cost to relationships, mental health and wellbeing.

Carers NSW tells us that, “Throughout the caring journey, many carers experience a range of emotions including anger, depression, anxiety, loneliness, loss and grief.”

They recommend that carers access counselling through the Carer Gateway.

Counselling can assist with dealing with overwhelming and confusing feelings, creating a better understanding of your experiences as a carer,

working out your own needs and developing ways to solve problems, learning how to manage conflict, stress and other emotional factors and learning and apply healthy communication boundaries.

Counselling can also assist with building resilience and learning to cope with change, improving mental, emotional and physical wellbeing, coping with grief and loss and learning how to re-build when your caring role ends and identifying support systems and being connected to services.

Carer Counselling is now provided through Carer Gateway by calling 1800 422 737 or visiting www. carergateway.gov.au.

Locally there are opportunities available to support carers.

Local counsellor Katrina Mason told News Of The Area, “Paid or unpaid the common struggle for those in service of others (including those dedicated to environmental conservation) circles around symptoms of emotional and

physical fatigue.

“On one hand it ignites dedication and a sense of satisfaction and on the other, it can leave us feeling exhausted, empty and cynical.”

She believes that exhaustion in human service is not a new phenomenon.

It has been called burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, and empathy fatigue.

“Learning mindfulness and meditation is a perfect way to start.

“It is known to reduce anxiety and stress whilst improving self-awareness,

sleep patterns and general mental health. In my Sustainability in Service workshops, I recommend basic mindfulness training as a foundational skill before

then moving onto techniques which specifically address the effects of empathy fatigue and vicarious trauma.”

The power outage affected more than 1200 households in the Hawks Nest area for several hours.

Essential Energy, the company responsible for

power supply to the area, notified residents via their website that the power outage was due to downed power lines.

This is the second power outage that residents have endured with the power also

going down on 24 January for the same reason.

Locals took it with good humour for the most part with many jokes on social media regarding roasts in the oven and cold beer at the pub.

Where is Nathalie Craig now?

BY Annette Yarnold Nathalie Craig is a name that would bring back fond memories for many readers of the NOTA.

NATHALIE Craig is a name that would bring back fond memories for many readers of the NOTA. They will remember Nathalie – a young, vibrant woman fresh out of University beginning her journalism career writing the NOTA almost single handed from 2011-2014.

Stepping into the NOTA journalist role after graduating Communications majoring in Journalism at the Newcastle University as well as Food Writing through the University of Adelaide was

quite daunting for Nathalie.

She had to put into practice all that she had learnt about journalism and run a newspaper.

Nathalie found the locals welcoming and felt quite supported.

People would send in community news, which was very helpful as it was overwhelming knowing she needed to write the entire paper.

“It’s a special community, really friendly people and one of the most beautiful places on earth,” said Nathalie.

Apart from the people, Nathalie loved the natural environment and felt privileged to work in such a beautiful place.

Well-respected Tea Gardens resident Gordon Grainger remembers Nathalie as a very nice person.

“Nathalie worked in very well with the local community groups, we enjoyed her company, she was keen, accurate and followed things up,” he said.

After three years at the NOTA, Nathalie was offered a Rotary Exchange Program to work at the Leicester Mercury in England for three months.

She was excited for her upcoming journey, but it meant the end of her career at the NOTA and she was sad to be leaving.

When attending a farewell function for Nathalie, Gordon Grainger made a speech stating “Nat arrived at the paper a girl and left a young lady.”

had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe on Press trips.

These trips and a Top Deck Tour through Europe ignited her passion in travel and she decided to continue travelling for the next year.

On her return home, she met her future husband Ben Levick shortly before moving to Sydney for work and Ben, a physiotherapist, followed Nathalie from Newcastle.

They decided to leave their jobs in Sydney in 2017 and travelled together walking the Camino de Santiago Walk– a popular historical pilgrimage route almost 800km in length from The Way of St James on the French border to Santiago in Spain.

This took them a month to walk, carrying their backpacks and forging friendships along the way.

“I really didn’t do any training before the walk and I don’t know how I did it,” said Nathalie.

On their return, Nathalie and Ben settled in Newcastle, adopted ‘Sweety', a rescue greyhound and bought their first home together before marrying in 2019.

Since then, they have added to their family and now have a beautiful son Isaac now seven months old.

Scholarships open CHARLES Sturt University and the MidCoast Council will soon launch a new scholarship program for locals committed to strengthening the region after the impacts of drought, bushfire, floods and COVID-19.

The MidCoast Council Community Leadership and Resilience Scholarships will provide current and aspiring community members with the knowledge and skills to build a stronger and more resilient community.

The program aims to provide support, ideas and opportunities to build

leadership capacity and develop collaborative strategies for the region’s recovery.

The University conducted research in 2018 and found that communities need passionate and capable leaders.

To address this demand, Charles Sturt has partnered with the MidCoast Council to create 25 scholarships for MidCoast community members worth $1,200 each.

The program is committed to growing and supporting emerging leaders in the Mid Coast LGA and driving

innovation and growth by supporting residents to pursue higher education.

Scholarship recipients will be required to complete two micro-subjects from Charles Sturt’s Graduate Certificate in Community Leadership and Resilience.

The first subject they will study is Building Community Resilience, commencing Monday 8 March, and the second is Leading Change, commencing Monday 28 June.

Each subject will run over eight weeks and students who apply to complete the full course will receive credit for

the two completed subjects.

Charles Sturt Director of External Engagement in Port Macquarie Ms Kate WoodFoye said existing programs are already showing positive results in other regions and she is excited to bring this to the MidCoast region.

“This program is focussed on upskilling diverse community members to become leaders in their workplace, communities or voluntary organisations,” she said.

“The skills learned will enable them to lead positive change for the MidCoast, fostering resilience and stronger community connections to build a brighter future.

“Similar programs are thriving in the region, such as the Mid North Coast Joint Organisation Resilience Network which was formed last year and is made up of people from all walks of life, aged 20 to 70 years old, from Port Macquarie, Bellingen and Kempsey LGAs. “This group has come together to learn, share ideas and support each other and will take these skills back into their communities “The key is the connection within the group that will drive change and prepare the MidCoast community for any challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

MidCoast Council Mayor David West said the

community will benefit from the leaders that emerge from this program.

“Our community has been impacted by the bushfires of 2019 in a way that will live with us forever,” he said.

“To be able to help our community become more resilient, and support leadership capacity within our communities, is something I am really proud the MidCoast Council can be involved with.

“These scholarships will build current and emerging leaders in our community and the benefits will flow on to all who call the MidCoast home.”

TO TUB OR NOT TO TUB WHEN RENOVATING? “A bit of a ‘healthy discussion’ with my husband about whether we should include a bathtub in our bathroom renovation. I vote ‘yes’, he’s voting ‘no’. Your thoughts?”

IT’S not the first time this question has divided a household! In our increasingly hot, dry land, the question of whether it’s irresponsible to fill a bath with precious water is frequently asked. If you believe your home is ‘forever’ and a bath is simply incompatible with your lifestyle, omitting it in favour of a double shower, dual vanity or more builtin storage may make the decision easy.

However, if you have young children, a bath is still considered a necessity and should you be thinking of selling, even if not right now, excluding a bathtub will limit your market.

There’s also the ‘lifestyle’ aspect to consider, especially if yours is a high-end home where a family bathroom is expected to have a bath, the inclusion of which actually defines ‘full bathroom’. If a bathtub already exists, or there is space for one, my advice would be yes, include one. There are many affordable, space-saver bathtubs available allowing you to combine style, price and functionality without compromising environmental awareness. Besides, there is much to be said for the benefits of an occasional relaxing soak after a long day!

Don’t feed the dingoes DEAR News Of The Area, DINGOES have been in Australia for thousands of years prior to white settlement and are truly a native species.

As such, they are protected so long as they remain in National Parks, Nature Reserves or on crown land.

Outside of these areas they are classed as pests.

They can live up to twenty years and are thought to have evolved from a small Asian wolf 4000 to 10,000 years ago.

They breed only once a year and do occasionally interbreed with dogs, but in certain isolated locations such as Fraser Island, the species remains more or less pure.

As Australia's top native predator, the dingoes plays an important role in protecting the environment as it suppresses the numbers of introduced predators such as cats, foxes, feral goats, pigs, deer and rabbits.

Dingoes live in groups of ten or so, but

young males are often solitary.

It is illegal in Australia to remove a dingo from the wild but they can be purchased from breeders in NSW and W.A. In Victoria. and N.T. a permit is required to keep one, while in Queensland, S.A. and Tasmania, it is illegal to keep dingoes at all.

The greatest danger to the survival of this iconic species is from humans feeding them. We have all seen this happening around campsites, on beaches and in National Parks and it is sad that people do not understand that through their intended kindness, they are in fact breaking down the animal's natural wariness of humans.

They then become a real threat to the safety of young children and pets and must be destroyed.

MidCoast Ageing Strategy DEAR News Of The Area, NOTA reported on Thursday, 4 February, that Mid Coast Council is seeking the support of local people in the over 55 age group to provide feedback to assist Council to develop the MidCoast Ageing Strategy.

Really!

Why would one even waste their time and effort on an organizational collaboration when clearly the Council has proven they do not listen to the people of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

What has happened with the feedback given to Council at the numerous past ‘’consultation meetings”?

As reported, the inaugural Ageing Strategy will focus on five priority areas, one being ‘’health and wellbeing’’.

I will mention just three points in this area.

If ‘’health and wellbeing’’ is a priority for Council, then why has access to the Tea Gardens Swimming Pool been closed to the aged and wider community? Purely because the Council will not employ a Covid Marshall and will not look at alternatives to keeping the pool open to all – not just the ageing!

The health benefits of swimming and aqua fitness are well documented.

Being active also provides socialization opportunities for the ageing.

Cycling is a popular sport and activity in our towns but where are the appropriate sized designated cycle lanes?

Why must aged pedestrians and mobility scooters dodge traffic on our uneven

Okay, let’s break this down.

What your friend is really saying is, ‘This item takes too much effort to get rid of, and you have “kind and naive friend” written on your forehead, so I’m making it your problem.’

She’s probably already tried Buy, Swap and Sell and, after haggling with locals who want to barter over a pair of once-used soccer boots, she’s emotionally exhausted.

I guess the problem here is that you’ve accepted these unwanted goods on the first occasion and you’ve set a precedent.

It is a bit like being the unwilling recipient of emotional garbage that then builds up in your subconscious while the offender has had the equivalent of a brain detox and feels refreshed.

I would suggest that next time your friend turns up with a car full of seconds, stop her before she starts unloading and say, ‘Look, it is very kind of you, but I really have no room to put a one-eyed rocking horse, a rusted wind chime and a Ken Done print covered in mould. I’m actually decluttering as well.

If you have time for a cup of tea, I could show you what’s on offer.’

Then, simply present her with all her rejected items from the last few years.

Life on the glorious Caribbean island of Saint Marie should be a breeze. There’s a rainforest, plenty of gorgeous fishing spots and beaches as far as the eye can see. Mind you, the crime rate is cause for concern – there seems to be a suspicious death almost every week to keep DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon, pictured) and the team busy.

This week, in “Tour de Murder”, it’s a cycling crash that is troubling the widowed detective – some loose threads (literally, a scrap of lycra) found near the body of Tour des Antilles favourite Xavier Prince lead Jack to suspect his death was no accident – but who wanted him dead? It’s the perfect Saturday night whodunit.

Some quiz shows demand broad general knowledge, others skills in maths or riddles, and some, well... they don’t really require much more than the nerve to put yourself on national television to gamble with the equal chance of making a fool of yourself or laughing all the way to the bank. The Cube is in the latter category, where contestants try to complete a seemingly easy task inside a Perspex cube for the viewing pleasure of the nail-biting audience. And it is precisely the added difficulty to otherwise simple tasks that makes this show – with a handsome prize pool – so infuriating and so captivating. Host Andy Lee (pictured above right) is along for the laughs.

MidCoast Ageing Strategy

By Tara CAMPBELL MIDCOAST Council is in the process of developing its inaugural Ageing Strategy and seeks feedback from locals over 55.

As well as this, they are asking that carers, aged care workers and organisations also contribute to the strategy.

In the 2016 Census, statistics displayed that the median age of residents in the MidCoast council region was 65, prompting the council to put a vital strategy in place for the ageing population.

A survey has been created in three various forms to allow the easiest possible experience for those wishing to grant feedback.

The main survey targets residents over 55, a separate survey exists for carers, family and aged care workers and the final survey is a condensed version for those short on time.

The survey will centre around five priority areas including health and wellbeing, working and retiring, housing choices, getting around and inclusive communities.

“The purpose of the community consultation for the strategy is to hear directly from people in the over 55 age group, as well as other members of the community who care for older people to identify what’s working and what’s not working across five key areas.

“This will help us to identify gaps and needs and we will pull all the feedback into a plan for the future,” Lyndie Hepple, MidCoast Council’s Coordinator of Community Development said.

“We know there will be some things that will come out from the feedback that are beyond Council’s scope or might be the responsibility of a different organisation or

Government body.

That doesn’t mean they won’t be included in the plan, but they will be identified as a responsibility of others.

“This will be a plan for the whole community and we look forward to working with service providers and different levels of Government to make the MidCoast area more age friendly.”

“We are pleased to see feedback rolling in, but we would like as many responses as possible to ensure that our plan reflects the whole community,” said Lyndie.

For those wishing to chat to the Council’s Community Development team about the strategy, there will be numerous pop-up information booths at local markets including: Nabiac Markets on 27 February and Pacific Palms Markets on 28 February.

Nominations Open for Landcare Awards NOMINATIONS are now open for the Mid Coast Regional Landcare Awards, presented by the Mid Coast 2 Tops Landcare Connection.

Nominations can be placed for eight different categories.

The Coastcare Award, recognising a community group that has contributed to the significant improvement of a coastal or marine environment.

The Indigenous Land Management Award, acknowledging an outstanding Indigenous community group, or individual that is working towards improving land use, protecting an area on behalf of the community.

The Individual Landcarer Award, for a significant contribution made by an individual who has showcased excellent leadership and commitment to landcare.

The Junior Landcare

Team Award, for a school, youth or young community landcare team that raises awareness and promoted participation of landcare amongst youth.

The Landcare Community Group Award, acknowledging a community group that is improving sustainable land use, or is undertaking onground action to preserve or protect the natural values of an area.

The Landcare Farming Award, which represents an individual, group, network or organisation that has demonstrated excellence and leadership in sustainability and land management.

The Partnership for Landcare Award, for a partnership of individuals, groups, networks, or organisations that have demonstrated leadership and achievements in landcare related activities.

The Young Landcare

Leadership Award, awarded to an individual or youth group between the ages of fifteen to 35 who promote Landcare through on-ground projects or awareness-raising activities.

“The awards are an opportunity to recognise significant contribution by members of the community in a variety of areas including: natural resource management, sustainable agricultural practice or environmental awareness,” Jessica Leck, Regional Landcare Coordinator said.

TUESDAY 9 February: Social bowls plus the Semi Final of the Fours Championship.

Format for social bowls two games, three bowls Triples 18 ends.

Jean Glover (swinger lead), Judi Polak and Wendy Jones had a convincing win against Jean, Jan Coomer and Dot Dallas 22 v 7.

Dawn Jones, Christine Fossey and Deyonne Page had a 9 shot lead on the 10th end and held it the last end winning 24 v 15.

Their opponents were Francis Betar, Sheril Johnson and Lynne Green.

The winners on the day winning with the highest margin were Jean, Judi and Wendy. Results of the semi final, Bette Saillard, Bev Rhodes, Bev Stephens and Dale Winter v Irene Roberts,

Ingrid Luck, Lyn Nightingale and Jill McBride.

What an amazing contest this was, from beginning to end, "neck to neck".

Jill's team held a narrow lead until the 14th end, the score here was 11 all.

By the 19th end Dale's side were 1 shot in front, 20th end 15 all just one end left to bowl and what an end it was.

Kathie Rimmer (Umpire) was called to do a very short measure to determine the winner. Dale's team claiming victory 16 v 15.

Sheila Rattray, Lynda Richards, Karen McPhie and Robyn Beaumont led all the way in their match v Lorraine Murphy, Robyn Webster, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker winning on the 19th end 28 v 9.

Thursday 11 February: Social bowls a game of Fours and a game of Pairs, 12 ends.

On the 6th end Irene Roberts and Judy McGavock were down by 3 shots but they made a brilliant comeback defeating Lyn Nightingale and Jill McBride 15 v 11.

A good win to Jean Glover, Ingrid Luck, Judi Polak and Maynie Roberts 14 v Lorraine Murphy, Robyn Webster, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker 6.

The Final of the Fours, Bette Saillard, Bev Rhodes, Bev Stephens and Dale Winter v Sheila Rattray, Lynda Richards, Karen McPhie and Robyn Beaumont.

Robyn's team started strongly with a 7 shot lead by the 3rd end.

The 4th end resulted in Dale's team amassing 5 points, a sobering moment for Robyn's ladies, just 2 shots difference, but still a long way to go in this contest.

There was not much time

for celebrating for Robyn Beaumont after winning the Final of the Fours Club Championship.

Robyn had to drive to the South Coast that afternoon to prepare for the NSW Indoor Singles.

This event attracted 130 bowlers from all over NSW. Sectional Playoffs were held at East Cessnock and Warilla. Robyn was the winner of her Section and has progressed to the Sectional

Playoffs to be contested on Monday 15 February, the results of this will be reported on in next week's edition.

Next weekend Robyn will be representing Tea Gardens in the NSW Club Champion of Champion Singles.

By Sandra BOURKE FITNESS, friendship, and fun prevailed last Saturday 13 February with the Myall Masters Swim Club finally hosting a safe swimming carnival at the Tea Gardens swimming pool with 137 entries.

Local Myall Masters swimmers, who have all been training hard for the big day, were relieved and keen to compete as the previous two swim meets were postponed due to risks posed by COVID-19 and thunderstorms.

This time neither could dampen the spirits of the competitors and officials.

The competition was hard, with Master’s Swim clubs from the Sydney Metropolitan and Greater Sydney Region, the Central Coast, Hunter Region and as far north as The

q Myall Master winner, Janelle Stevens, after a successful race. Swimmers completed in up to four events plus relays.
