By Marian SAMPSON WE couldn't get the PM to Tea Gardens, but he ventured to Williamtown on Monday.

The Australian Defence Force and many locally based aerospace businesses celebrated as the first F-35 Joint Strike Fighter arrived at BAE Systems Williamtown facility in Australia.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison was on hand at BAE Systems with the Minister for Defence the Hon Linda Reynolds, Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price, Chief of Air Force Air Marshall Mel Hupfeld and BAE Systems CEO Gabby Costigan.

BAE Systems is the Southern Pacific regions F-35 Heavy Airframe Depot supporting the F-35 aircraft in the region for the next 30 years.

32 highly skilled technicians have been recruited to provide airframe maintenance and sustainment for the depot.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, “Australia must always, must always be prepared, always looking to the future to be prepared.

“We are here today to mark a milestone, one which is about keeping Australia safe.”

“Some 50 Australian Companies are providing parts and systems, and those contracts are worth 2.7 billion dollars.

“This includes contracts for sustainment/ training/maintenance which are still rolling out.

“In Port Stephens and the Hunter companies including Milskil, HI Fraser and Varley are playing a part of this economy.

“We are a serious part of this (Joint Strike Force) undertaking.”

After being selected as the maintenance, repair, overhaul and upgrade depot for the Southeast Asia region, the BAESA facility will host Australian F-35A aircraft and other nations’ F-35 aircraft include aircraft from Japan, Korea and Singapore.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the F-35A fleet was now 33 strong and ready to deploy on operations.

“This is about protecting and securing Australia’s interests but it’s also creating jobs and driving investment right here in the Hunter

and across the country too,” the Prime Minister said.

The program is progressing on budget and on schedule and the aircraft is undergoing routine structural modifications to improve the airframe, ensuring it reaches full life, and aligning it with newer aircraft.

“We are building our sovereign defence capabilities.

“We now have 41 fully trained RAAF pilots, nine of whom trained on home soil at RAAF Base Williamtown.

“We also have more than 225 trained technicians as the RAAF’s F-35A maintenance capability continues to develop,” she said.

Love is in the air

By Tara CAMPBELL VALENTINE’S Day is quickly approaching, and so it’s time to showcase some feel-good love stories from the Myall Coast.

There’s love in the air, and if the last year has shown us anything, it’s that

we need to hold on to the things we love now more than anything.

Here are some throwback love stories from the area.

Michelle and John Campbell “Hawks Nest has always been part of our family.

q Michelle and John Campbell at their wedding, 25 years ago.

“Both John and I used to holiday up at Hawks Nest caravan park separately and met in 1990 when I was working in the shop at the park.

“We would meet up year after year in the Christmas holidays and it wasn’t until I got a job in Sydney where John lived where we finally made it official.

“We just celebrated our 25th Wedding anniversary and Hawks Nest is still a part of our family, with my mum still having the same caravan at the caravan park, and John’s mum now lives in Tea Gardens.”

MIDCOAST Council’s draft asset management policy is currently on public exhibition with community feedback invited until Friday 12 March.

The policy is a guide for the strategic management of Council’s infrastructure assets and defines its vision and service delivery objectives for asset management, in accordance with legislative

requirements, community needs and affordability.

The draft policy is the first in a suite of documents required under the integrated planning and reporting (IP & R) framework and incorporates all council assets.

It indirectly supports a range of strategic objectives, where the provision and management of physical assets are required as part of the related service delivery.

“This asset management policy provides the

framework for the establishment of consistent asset management processes throughout our region,” said MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Rob Scott.

“It’s about making sure our assets can provide quality services to the community, and are managed, maintained and renewed sustainably as the community expects.”

“Our infrastructure assets represent a vast investment, over many generations, that supports

modern living in the community, and this plan is imperative to ensure these assets can continue to be utilised for future generations.”

This quote struck me when changing over to my new 2021 calendar. Last year I imparted knowledge to clients in relation to family law related Financial Agreements. Sometimes, the person was seeking advice in relation to a new relationship and how they might protect their financial position if their relationship becomes a de facto relationship, which later breaks down.

It is likely that we discussed what constitutes a de facto relationship, enquiring whether there was to be a relationship as a couple living together on a genuine domestic basis within their communities, or simply an affectionate companionship.

Perceptions between people as to the extent and type of their relationship can differ, and in the event of a dispute, the ultimate decision as to whether there is a de facto relationship will be a decision for the court, not them.

The length of the relationship will also have

great legal significance as the family courts have jurisdiction to order an adjustment of the properties of the parties in a de facto relationship when they have been living in that de facto relationship for a period of 2 years or more. In some de facto relationships of less than 2 year's duration, courts can also declare that they have jurisdiction when one of the parties has been making substantial (as opposed to usual or ordinary) direct and indirect financial and nonfinancial contributions to the other's property and it would not be just and equitable to ignore those contributions.

I am hopeful that the knowledge that was imparted during 2020 was helpful to those clients to make informed and practical decisions, so that 2021 may be a happy New Year for them.

Croquet Club celebrates anniversary

The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Croquet Club is celebrating and they’d like you to come along and give croquet a try.

2021 is the 33rd foundation year and 30th MPCC Anniversary and will be celebrated on Saturday10 April at 10am with a BBQ and “Come and Try Day” with the club rolling out the welcome wagon for everyone who would like to attend - subject to COVID-19 restrictions.

Anthony Jones of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Croquet Club told News Of The Area, “The club was formed by seven wellknown local ladies in 1988, Gwen Pye, Gwen Wiseman, Joan Woods, Audrey Woods, Mary Collins, Ruth Coxon and Eileen Webb who started playing on the Witt St sports field.

“Croquet Courts at the Myall Park Sporting Facility were established following the ladies negotiations with Great Lakes Council and games commenced in April 1991.”

In February 1992 the club changed its name to The Myall Park Croquet Club and was officially Incorporated as a not for profit club on 15th January 1992 by the Public Officer Monica Buckley.

The club has been supported by Council and community groups to successfully

build a facility that supports all aspects of croquet including maintenance, social activities and of course the odd competitive game of croquet.

Croquet is a great game for those who are perhaps looking for a new low impact way to be active in a strong social

Stroud Show Turns 100

Stroud Show is a hub well known for its agriculture, eccentric contests and community spirit.

The Stroud Show Committee has announced their centenary celebrations will be held on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 April 2021 at the Stroud Showground.

The good news is that COVID-19 will not stop the celebrations.

While this year’s Show may look a little different from previous - including pre-purchased tickets, social distancing and a cap on visitor numbers - preparations are well underway and organisers are expecting to run a full program, with an extended camp draft schedule to debut on the new arena.

“As a signature Show for the region, we are excited to be bringing the Stroud Show back in 2021.

“We are 100 years old and still going strong even in pandemic conditions.

“A comprehensive Covid-19 safety plan has been developed by the Committee, which strictly aligns with the State Government Guidelines.

“The guidelines will be

closely monitored and the safety plan will be adapted as needed,” said Stroud Show President and Zone 3 Delegate for ASC, James Harris.

The two day Show will offer visitors acres of activities and exhibitors to see and do in the great outdoors, including the speedy fence post splitting competition, the ute muster, wife carrying comp, demolition derby, animal nursery and a variety of amusements rides.

While in the ring, equine enthusiasts will delight with the stallions, colts, mares and fillies on display and competing in their various disciplines of show jumping, hacking, equestrian and show ring.

Over in the pavilion, the farm produce is a sight to be seen with oversized pumpkin, zucchini and watermelon revealed.

The annual Stroud Show will also showcase incomparable livestock, products and produce from the Stroud Valley region and beyond, giving a true feel of what life in this real country town has to offer.

The Dungog Chronicle of April 10, 1921 reported that the first Stroud Show raised 150 pounds, which were contributed to the towns’ WWI Memorial with over 1,000 attendees at the first show.

Stroud Show President, James Harris told News Of The Area, “We are expecting attendance to break records and when you put something on now people are coming from all over the place to compete.“ He is confident that the committee will be able to put on a whole show.

Tickets will be available on line to attend the show and tickets will be available within a week or two.

The State Government has mandated 5,000 people at any one time excluding volunteers.

The funds from ticket sales go back into the showground and local charities.

There will be a new multipurpose pavilion opened at this show with two commercial kitchens.

The Camp Draft will now have a dedicated extended area and a separate area for the popular demolition derby.

There will be 650-700 camp draft runs held in the new space which will see more people able to compete.

“Kids are free on Saturday and $20 for adults with Fridays only $10 making a day at the show a great affordable family day,” he said.

Among the performances for the centenary show there will be Catherine Britt and the Viper Creek Band.

Hang on, help is on its way

MIDCOAST Council is establishing its inaugural youth taskforce for progressive, community minded, active young people from across the region.

This taskforce is the first of its kind for the MidCoast, providing an opportunity for young people aged 16-24 to be involved in a formal and ongoing youth participation setting.

Elected taskforce members will be able to actively have a say on decisions affecting them and work together to deliver initiatives for other young people across the MidCoast.

Once established, the taskforce will plan and run a variety of youth activities and events and support the delivery of localised youth

action teams in the Manning, Great Lakes and Gloucester regions.

There are 12 positions available on the taskforce.

Applicants must be aged between 16 and 24 on 16 April 2021 and live in the MidCoast region.

“We hope to see a wide range of applicants from right across the MidCoast, from diverse backgrounds and covering the age group of 16 to 24 year olds,” explained Russell Ingram, MidCoast Council’s Community Strengthening Officer – Youth.

“This is a really important opportunity for our young people who have a lot to offer and our aim is for the taskforce to have a positive impact on young people across the MidCoast.”

Successful applicants will need to be available for monthly meetings, either in person or online depending on the meeting location.

Applications opened today, Monday 8 February and close on Friday 19 March, with an induction planned for Friday 16 April at Yalawanyi Ganya.

“This is a great opportunity for local young people who are passionate about our region to develop unique leadership skills, connect with other likeminded young people and further develop their connection to the local area,” added Russell.

MIDCOAST Council is supporting Hunter Local Land Services to deliver two Cane Toad and Native Frog workshops and spotlight nights at Tea Gardens this weekend.

Cane toads are increasingly being reported in the Hunter and MidCoast regions, and these workshops, held intermittently depending on interest, have been organised to ensure the community can help prevent cane toads establishing in the local area.

“Cane Toads pose a major threat to our native fauna,” said Mat Bell, Mid Coast Council’s senior ecologist.

There’s no phone reception and daylight is fast fading.

A terrifying prospect.

Suddenly a friendly voice crackles over the Citizen Band radio in response to your emergency call, asking your whereabouts and offering aid.

Radio Rescue Emergency Communications Incorporated is a notfor-profit self-funded organisation monitoring emergency Citizen Band Radio channels and relaying information to the relevant authorities.

Established in 2019 after the closure of several other volunteer rescue organisations, Radio Rescue Emergency Communications is staffed by volunteers with many years of experience in rescue and

radiocommunications.

Seven volunteers monitor emergency channels in the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens area alone.

“We are only a small organisation,” said Walter Searles, NSW Team Leader of Radio Rescue Emergency Communications Incorporated.

“But we are building up.”

The organisation also educates the public in the correct use of Citizen Band radio.

With the greater availability of “licence-free” UHF radio sets selling for as cheaply as $20, members of the public are often unaware that there are federal laws governing the use of CB radios, and that these sets are in fact CB radios and they are subject to these laws.

Channels five and 35 on the UHF band, and channel nine on the 27MHz or High Frequency (HF) band are allocated emergency channels and must be kept clear for life-threatening

The workshops will help the community to be able to tell the difference between native frogs and cane toads, learn about cane toad versus native frog ecology and how to safely and humanely handle cane toads, as well as identifying high risk sites for potential new cane toad incursions and what to do when you think you’ve spotted one.

Have your say on climate change MIDCOAST Council is seeking feedback from the community on its Draft Climate Change Policy and Strategy.

Both documents are the next stage in a process that began in 2019 when Council made a commitment to taking action on climate change.

The purpose of the Climate Change Policy is to demonstrate leadership by providing a framework and

a set of guiding principles for climate action, setting ambitious targets for climate mitigation, committing to reducing the risks of climate change to Council’s assets and operations and supporting the community’s efforts to do the same.

The Climate Change Strategy outlines an approach to renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate adaptation

It sets out the case for a range of cost-effective actions that can be implemented progressively over several years to mitigate and adapt to climate change in Council’s operations.

The strategy is the first phase in a two-part program of work and is focused on Council’s assets

and operations, with the second phase of the project focusing on working with the MidCoast community.

“We’re engaging with the community to ensure climate change risks and impacts are understood and managed collaboratively,” explained Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council’s Director of Liveable Communities.

“The reality is, this is something we can’t afford

to ignore, we need to plan for the unavoidable impacts of climate change. Our aim is to manage and reduce our greenhouse emissions and adapt our practices to reduce our impact on the environment and our communities.”

The policy and strategy are open for feedback until Friday 12 March and Council is hopeful the community will get on board, share

ideas and support the implementation into the future.

“It’s really important that we all come together on this, it needs to be a joint effort,” added Paul.

Karuah Triplets Take the Next Big Step

By Victoria HENDERSON FIRST day of school is always a nerve wracking one for kindergarten students and their parents.

One family in Karuah can vouch for that in multiples.

The Barry family is a unique one in that they have three kindergarteners starting this year, with identical triplets heading into the classroom.

News Of The Area last caught up with these unique brothers on their second birthday.

It certainly is a unique thing to be identical triplets, some sources place the odds at 200 million to one.

When the boys are asked what the word triplet means they simply say, “Me and my brothers.”

The boys do not yet understand all the fuss and sometimes will call themselves twins.

“It’s like other people can see it but they can’t,” said their mum, Kate.

According to Kate they get enjoyment out of people’s reactions and their big sister gets a kick out of it too.

“She’s always helping- she gets very bored if they’ve gone to my mum’s, even for an hour or two.

“She loves to show them off,” said Kate.

“She’s even happier now that she has her ‘support crew’ with her in the playground.”

Having that support at ‘big school’ is important and the triplets are lucky to have twins in the same class.

Kate says it takes the pressure off them a bit, not being the only multiples in the class.

Kate and her husband certainly know a thing or two about pressure.

With the start of school for triplets it’s a case of three times everything- uniforms, shoes, enrolment forms.

Kate said that she simplifies things a bit by keeping the choices simple for the boys.

She laughed when discussing the idea of arguing with three people instead of one when trying to buy things.

“It’s busy and exhausting but exciting too, any parent would say that.

“We wouldn’t change anything though,” said Kate.

OH, Yvonne, what is this mad world we are in where every move we make is monitored?

You know, I think the problem is choice - too many choices in every aspect of our lives.

This choice has now exploded into the need for an app to monitor, quite literally, everything.

It’s like that Sting song - Every breath you take, Every move you make, Every step you take, Every smile you fake - the Smartphone is watching you and the smarter it’s getting, the more reliant and dumbed-down we are becoming.

Scanning barcodes of every morsel that enters our mouths takes time, and it’s also a sedentary task with your typing finger being the only body part that’s getting a workout.

Along with more monitoring choices, the last couple of decades have seen a huge increase in food choices.

Compare the humble school lunch box.

For my generation it wasn’t even a box, just a Vegemite sandwich and an apple in a brown paper bag.

Today, kids have a bento box with a three course meal, much of it made up of salty or sugary snacks, muffins, fruit juices, triple-decker sandwiches and so on.

It’s a wonder the kids can get on the school bus with the weight in their backpacks.

After a few years of this, they’ll then have to join the app brigade to try and undo the damage.

So, in a nutshell, I think sometimes to look forward, we have to look back.

Put down the phone, pick up a bottle of water, and go for a brisk walk in the sunshine.

No wellbeing or diet or exercise app will be able to match that.

Sorting out the world’s issues during a pandemic is no easy task, so it stands to reason that Dave Hughes has brought in reinforcements for the fifth season of his problem-solving panel show. Comedians Becky Lucas and Nazeem Hussain will join Hughesy each week to share the burden and help guests near and far sort out life’s little conundrums.

The season premiere last week set the bar for some epic guest stars, with Tiger King’s Carole Baskin and Hollywood enigma Gary Busey Zooming in with their dilemmas.

From mundane everyday dramas to the hot-button topics of the day, no drama is too big, or too small, for Hughesy and his team.

He has been instrumental in acquiring boats and gym equipment for training.

John Baskett told News Of The Area, “The Club will be making it easier for members from Nelson Bay, Salamander Bay, Soldiers Point, Tanilba Bay and Lemon Tree Passage areas to gain access.”

The club is looking at having members picked up by qualified water taxi from these areas to train at North Arm Cove and then returned to their wharf.

The club is based at Karuah which is an easy 15 minute drive from Medowie.

Training is held at North Arm Cove and even at Tea Gardens.

Rowing is an Olympic, Australian Championship and World Championship sport and is available for anyone over 12 years to 100 (and over if you are fit).

“It is only $30 per year for membership and this allows you the use of the equipment, which includes gym equipment, under qualified supervision.”

The Club had a setback earlier last year with the Corona Virus impacting on training sessions but is now up and running and looking for young and mature members to “give it go”.

John can coach to competition level and one Club member, Craig Butler, is set to compete at a regatta in February at the Endeavour Rowing Club regatta at Duckenfield.

Rowing is an individual or team sport where you and your friends can row together

or alone.

You can row for fitness, competitiveness or just the thrill of being on the water and amongst nature.

In the past two months, the rowers at North Arm Cove have encountered two different species of turtles, dolphins, sea lions, (21) black swans and a white chested sea eagle.

The rowing club intends to maintain a good relationship with the Dept. of Fisheries and Maritime Services Dept. to help protect the native species and environment, so rowing can be enjoyed for many years to come in the Port Stephens area.

The Karuah Rowing and Aquatic Club had its first AGM recently with the election of six local people as committee members, volunteering their time to keep this sport available to the people of the Port Stephens area.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club Results UNFORTUNATELY no bowls were played on Tuesday 26 January due to Australia Day, then rain prevented play on Thursday 28 January and Tuesday 2 February.

Monday 1 February: Four teams from our Club travelled to Lemon Tree Passage Bowling Club to compete in their Fours Invitation Day, 2 games of 11 ends.

Good results from all teams, all winning at least 1 game.

Lorraine Murphy, Robyn Webster, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker were the only team from our Club winning both their games.

Winners of the prize money were determined by 2 wins plus margins resulting in our ladies just missing out on collecting a

prize.

A good day of bowling enjoyed by all.

Thursday 4 February: Social bowls plus Round 1 of the Club Championship Fours. Social play was a game of 3 bowls Triples, 12 ends, Irene Roberts playing "swinger lead".

Irene, Lyn Nightingale and Jill McBride were ahead by 8 shots on the 4th end.

High Interest as the Hawks Return to the Field

By Samuel BARTLETT THE Tea Gardens Hawks’ rugby season is underway and club officials are excited about a big year in 2021.

New funding boosts have kept the club moving as they comply with regulations, but continued support has been necessary to keep the game going.

After missing out on a season last year, club spokesperson, Neil Reynolds, says the kickstart to the season this year is just what they need to restart momentum.

“Early interest from a number of players has been encouraging,” Neil said.

“The Club is also hoping to field a Ladies ‘League tag’ side, “Players have indicated interest but will need to confirm later.”

Official training for

Hawks teams began on Tuesday 9 February at 6pm with promising attendance.

When asked about future plans for the club Neil replied, “The Hawks Juniors are a work in progress, however the Club is confident of teams in mini, mod and international divisions.”

The Juniors will also hold an official sign on day on Thursday 25 February at Myall Park with an opportunity to register interest this Thursday evening the 11 of February.

Trent Murphy will continue as Hawks Coach, supported by successful journeyman Greg Tassell.

The Hawks are currently developing a brand-new Facebook page for increased supporter information before kick-off against the Abermain Hawks at 7pm on Friday March 12.

Funding Boost for Flying Football Club

By Samuel BARTLETT FUNDING boosts for the Tea Gardens Hawks rugby league club will remodel the toilets and dressing sheds at Myall Park.

As the season starts up, a grant supported by local tradesmen has been pledged to upgrade facilities in time for official training and the start of the season.

Club spokesperson Neil Reynolds also said support from the community and

beyond will make 2021 a much brighter season.

He explained, “Local member Kate Washington has also pledged support for available grants to build a new facility at the ground.”

Club President Rob Smith is confident the Hawks can meet criteria to secure these grants.

The Hawks missed out on holding a season last year as COVID quashed any opportunity for games, but under a revitalised

committee, the teams will kick off in March under strict COVID-safety regulations.

The 2021 season will kick off at Myall Park with a trial game against Abermain Hawks at 7pm on Friday March 12.

A second home trial is planned on Saturday March 27 against West Maitland “Red Dogs”.

This will be preceded by a Lady Hawks game, and possibly a Juniors game.

The winners were Greg Smith, Bill Whalan and Stu Dorahy with 23 points.

The lucky losers were Kev Barbie, Barry Goode and Bob Weir with 18 points.

7 February The final of the Club Championship Minor Pairs was played today between the teams of Robyn Young and Dave Garcia taking on Mike Delacca and Leigh Hunt.

When I picked up play well into the match, the Leigh Hunt team were well

in front and leading 12-3.

Shortly thereafter, a great shot from Rob Young saw them pick up a four and in the next few ends, with successive contributions, the score became 12-11.

With just a few ends to play it looked like this was game on!

The words were barely started, when on the 16th end disaster struck.

For some inexplicable reason, the Dave Garcia team conceded a maximum count of 6 to see any chance of winning snatched away.

ROWING is a perfect sport for those living on and around the rivers and bays of Port Stephens and the Myall Coast, with Karuah now boasting its own rowing club.

The Karuah Rowing and Aquatic Club Inc. was started in 2020.

John Baskett, an accredited rowing coach with years of experience, started the club in 2019.

John and his father coached for the Nepean Rowing Club for many years and were successful in coaching teams to the Olympics, World and Australian Titles.

John is passionate about rowing and hopes to attract people of all ages over the age of 12 to the sport in the Port Stephens area.
