clubhouse when they were alerted to a female caught in a dangerous rip current about 80m offshore and 100m north of the clubhouse.

Acting quickly, Phillip Everett, Stuart Daniel, Carolyn Jeffries, Anthony Logue and Sharon Taylor leapt to respond, working together to enact a rescue – Stuart

making his way out to the patient on the rescue board while the others readied the IRB for launch.

“The sun was setting and there were long shadows on the sand but not on the water,” Carolyn said.

“There were tricky conditions as well, as the poor lady found out.

“We thought it was better to wait for the board to come

down rather than taking the tube.

“I went to higher ground and made hand signals for Stuart because from water level, with the big waves, he couldn’t tell where to go.”

Despite a tricky shore break and choppy conditions creating difficulty securing the woman on the rescue board, the IRB was launched successfully and reached Stuart and the woman in short time. Exhaustion playing a part but never stopping

them, the team eventually secured the patient aboard the IRB and safely returned her to shore, breathing and conscious.

The rescue board was almost collateral damage in the incident, swept away in the aftermath of getting the patient aboard the IRB, but that was retrieved by Sharon as Carolyn advised the IRB driver and crew of how to navigate the waves back to shore.

“The whole team

worked really well,” Carolyn continued.

“We were so surprised sitting at a table upstairs in the clubhouse, but we didn’t hesitate – we stopped, looked and assessed.

“It was a natural thing to do thanks to our training.

“Good training facilitates good rescues.”

Without the efforts of the five off-duty Tea Gardens Hawks Nest SLSC members, the incident could have played out very differently.

The SLSNSW Rescue of the Month aims to recognise excellence in lifesaving.

Each month a ‘Rescue of the Month’ is awarded at statelevel for the most outstanding rescue performance for that period.

Monthly winners have the chance to win the National Rescue of the Month and become finalists for the SLSNSW Rescue of the Year which is presented at the annual Awards of Excellence.

Often times in family law matters restraints on parents behaviour are included in Orders; but is there some behaviour – or some parents – when a restraint cannot overcome a potential risk?

In the recent decision of Saunders & Yorke the Appeal Court agreed with the trial Judge that two children were not to spend any time with their father because restraints on his behaviour would not be sufficient to actually restrain his behaviour.

In this case there was no dispute that the children enjoyed their time with the father – and wanted to continue spending time with him. The question was whether behaviour of the father associated with his paraphilia posed a risk to the children – that could not be overcome if restraints were included in the Orders.

The trial Judge – adopting the concerns of the Court Child Expert – was of the view that behaviour of the father posed a risk of psychological harm to the children and that the father could not be effectively restrained from exposing the children to that risk. The trial Judge expressed concern that “the father was prepared to say whatever he thought the court would expect him to say in order to maintain his connection with [the children]”. Ultimately the trial Judge found that the father did not genuinely agree that his behaviour presented any risk to the children and that there was therefore little utility in making the restraint orders.

The Appeal Court found no error in the trial Judge’s decision.

Winter Warmer ‘Movement’ Exhibition

THE Galleries in the Gardens are hosting a new event.

Opening on Friday 10 June from 5pm, the Winter Warmer Exhibition titled ‘Movement’ will be displayed in the Gallery.

‘Movement’ is an exhibition of paintings, mixed media, photography, ceramics and sculptures by the Galleries in the Gardens artists.

Anita Woods, Secretary of the committee at the gallery, invites everyone to join the Galleries in the Gardens to celebrate their biggest event of the year.

“The exhibition will officially be opened on Friday and we would love the community to join us to help celebrate this popular winter exhibition.

“This year we have Jo Chisholm-Ray judging the artworks, which is not to be missed,” Ms Woods said.

Jo ChisholmRay is a wellknown art educator, gallery owner, artist and art tutor who has over 45 years in the art industry.

The Gallery is open six days a week from 10am3pm and closed on Tuesdays.

Red Cross Sunday TEA Gardens Hawks Nest Red Cross branch recently attended the Uniting Church for Red Cross Sunday, a day celebrating the birthday of Henry Durant, who founded the Red Cross in 1863 after witnessing the aftermath of war.

The Australian Red Cross was founded in 1941 by Lady Helen Munro Ferguson after the commencement of WW1.

Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Red Cross was commenced in September 1935, with membership being one shilling.

Members donated one penny per

month to provide food, shelter, water and medical supplies.

“Our local branch continues today fundraising for local appeals for international disasters such as Ukraine and Afghanistan,” said Janet Baker.

“Our members have been trained in psychological first aid, allowing us to assist in the evacuation centres and outreach programs.”

Red Cross is now assisting in the recovery of regions devastated by recent flooding events.

“The recipients are very grateful and feel secure knowing that a call will come should they have a fall.

“At our Christmas party we donated toys to the Afghan children living in the Hunter, presented in lovely library bags kindly donated by Tea Gardens Boomerang Bags."

To support their local work, Red Cross is having a garage sale on 11 June.

Support for victims of identity theft IT is now easier for victims of identity theft to take back control of compromised documents thanks to a new service launched by the NSW Government.

ID Support NSW is a nation-leading service that acts as a one-stop-shop for victims of the crime to seek help and securely recover Government documents and private information, such as their driver’s licence and birth certificate.

Older populations are often the target of scams, with approximately 37 per cent of all reported cases targeting the elderly.

According to the latest Census report, the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area has the oldest median age in not only New South Wales, but Australia, with 63.4 years.

WOMEN living in the Myall Lakes undergoing IVF and accessing other assisted reproductive treatments are set to benefit from an Australian-first cash rebate of up to $2,000 to reduce treatment costs as part of the NSW Government’s 2022-23 Budget.

Under the $80 million package around 12,000 women across the state who are using private fertility clinics will benefit from the rebate, while another 6,180 women will be given access to publicly supported IVF treatment.

THE Hawks Nest Bridge Club is urging interested community members to try their hand at the famous trick-taking card game, citing a host of social and mental benefits.

Millions of people play bridge worldwide, making it one of the world's most popular card games, particularly among seniors.

Club President Leslie Falla said the benefits for seniors were two-fold.

“Bridge is unusual in that it has two aspects,” he said.

“It has a social aspect, because it is a partnership game, and is the most popular partnership game in the world.

“It also has a cerebral content which gives the brain gentle exercise.

“Apparently there are

only two normal things that do that; one is bridge and the other is ballroom dancing,” Leslie said.

While the world’s best bridge players can make millions per year; at the local level, the game is all about having fun.

“At club level, the social content is massive,” Leslie said.

“If you are playing for $1 million a year, that is bloody serious… but at club level, it is a fun game, played in the right atmosphere.”

Leslie said the game of bridge has an “image problem”.

“The misconception is that bridge is for very serious people.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” he said.

bridge is overly serious, the local club will be hosting a meet-the-club social in early July – bookings are essential.

“Community members can come along and meet the club members and see the club house.

“The whole idea is to meet last year’s students, they can see for themselves that we don’t have two heads, it’s friendly and it’s fun,” Leslie said.

For those wanting to learn the game of bridge, very affordable lessons start in mid-July.

The Hawks Nest club was formed in 1995 as a subbranch of the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

“Since then it has grown and grown to around 100 members as people in the community have come to appreciate the benefits bridge brings to people of a mature age,” said Leslie.

From formation, the club made use of a variety of shared spaces in local venues, eventually deciding to pursue the construction of its own club house.

“It was a fantastic community effort, raising over $350,000,” Leslie said.

“The club house was officially opened in March 2018 by Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington.

“The club house can accommodate up to 20 tables, which is pretty big for a bridge club.”

For Leslie, who describes himself as being “addicted to bridge”, the love of the game can be traced back to his university days.

“By today’s standards it was a very amateur standard, but we enjoyed ourselves.

“I picked it up again years later with an old college friend.

“When we came up here in 2000 the local bridge club was going, and we started getting involved.

“We found a lot of new friends that way.

“Now I am a hopeless addict to the game.”

About to embark on a trip overseas, Leslie has been searching online for a club to play with abroad.

“We are about to go on holiday, and one of the things we enjoy doing, as part of the international bridge community, is to play bridge wherever we are,” Leslie said.

“We are going to Portugal,

so my job is to look for a club in Portugal that will entertain us.

“Wherever we go, we chat to people.

“Luckily you don’t need to speak fluent Portuguese to play the game in Portugal.”

Having played across the globe, Leslie said Lebanon was the most unique place he had sat down for a game of bridge.

“It is a beautiful country,” he said.

“I remember it vividly, I was playing a difficult contract, and I was playing it in French.

“Everyone at the other table stopped and came around behind me and started watching me.

“I was 23, not a very good bridge player at all, in a foreign country… just hoping I had made the right bids and playing the right contract.

“That’s the beauty of the game, it is international.”

She can use this to see where the bus is in real time, thereby avoiding uncomfortable scenes where she is begging and you are admonishing, while at the same time recalling how you put your own mother through the exact same scenario almost every morning when you somehow managed to miss the school bus (which may or may not have been because the car was so much more comfortable and took you right to the gate instead of enduring the killer hill to the school).

I'd ensure you have some sort of system in place where each time she misses the bus, she either forgoes the activity or else pays you the cost of an Uber/taxi (which, let's face it, is the only alternative).

Then she may see the value in improving her time-management skills.

APPLICATIONS for the fourth round of Northern NSW Football’s (NNSWF) Facilities Fund are now open.

Northern NSW Football’s Facilities Fund was established in 2019 and aligns with the NSW Football Infrastructure Strategy.

The fund has seen NNSWF invest $714,928 in community football infrastructure projects since its inception, with partner funding of $848,199 taking the total project value to

$1,563,127.

These fourteen projects have supported more than 6,500 players, referees, coaches and volunteers and have included lighting, amenities and field upgrades.

The Facilities Fund was established in order to assist football clubs to partner with local stakeholders such as Local Government Authorities, state government, schools, other sports and relevant landowners to:

- Improve the football experience for players, referees, coaches and volunteers - Provide opportunities for more participants to play more football more often - Improve the safety of community facilities Provide inclusive football opportunities within clubs Improve security at community football facilities.

Northern NSW Football Community Football

Manager Ross Hicks said funding came from a portion of player registration fees, with football money going back into helping football clubs.

“The Facilities Fund provides clubs another avenue to seek significant funding for facility projects and in turn increase participation, improve safety and security, assist in building stronger communities through football and improve the overall football experience

for their members and stakeholders,” Hicks said.

“We would particularly encourage clubs from the Football Far North Coast and North Coast Football regions that have been impacted by the devastating flood disaster earlier this year to make an application.

“We have seen the positive impacts the fund has already had on clubs and their facilities.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for clubs. Please don’t miss out.”

NSW AMBULANCE will recruit 2,128 new staff and open 30 more stations in a $1.76 billion boost to frontline emergency care, as part of the NSW Government’s 2022-23 Budget.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the record investment means NSW Ambulance will have the largest paramedic workforce in Australia, now and well into the future.

“Ambulance services across Australia are

experiencing unprecedented demand but this funding will ensure NSW is well placed for the challenges ahead,” Mr Perrottet said.

“The investment will help increase capacity both in terms of available paramedics to respond to patients, and available staff to help answer the record volume of calls.

“Our strong economic management means we can deliver a brighter future for NSW families by giving them confidence emergency

support will be there in their time of need.’’

The $1.76 billion over four years will provide NSW with 1,858 extra paramedics, 210 ambulance support staff, 52 nurses and eight doctors.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the Government will continue its record spending on ambulance infrastructure, so the larger workforce has access to the best facilities.

“NSW Ambulance, the Health Services Union and

the NSW Government have worked collaboratively ensuring we get the right number of paramedics, in the right places when and where needed.

“This massive boost to paramedics we believe will make a positive difference,” Mr Hazzard said.

In this Budget, the NSW Government will deliver 30 new stations including at Warilla, Kincumber, Lisarow, Gateshead, Swansea, Cherrybrook, Raby and Narellan in the coming year,

with 22 more stations to come over the following three years.

Minister for Regional Health Bronnie Taylor said the investment in ambulance infrastructure and workforce is great news for those living in regional and rural areas.

“This funding will bring more jobs to the regions, provide a nicer working environment for local paramedics and most importantly, help us to save lives,” Mrs Taylor said.

HOW are speed limits impacting driver behaviour and safety on regional roads?

The Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety is conducting an inquiry into speed limits and road safety in regional New South Wales, the Hon. Lou

Amato MLC, Chair of the Committee, announced last week.

"Speed limits are an important part of road safety,” said Mr Amato.

"We want to hear what people who regularly travel long distances on rural and regional roads think

of the current speed limits, including their experiences of variable speed limits.

"We're interested in whether the current speed limits are still suitable, as well as their impact on drivers as they travel and go about their daily business."

The Committee will also look at the impact of improved vehicle technology and road infrastructure on speed limits and road safety in regional areas.

"The experiences of people who live, work and frequently travel through

regional New South Wales will help inform the Committee as it considers how speed limits influence and protect us while we are on the road."

Extra staff for NSW Ambulance

Applications opened on Wednesday 1 June, with applications to close on Friday 15 July.

Successful applications will be announced in August to coincide with the Future of Football roadshow.

NNSWF is committed to improving places to play, a focus area set out in its Play On Strategic Plan.

NNSWF’s goal is to increase the number of football facilities that are fit for purpose, welcoming and support the growth of the game.

NSW Treasurer Matt Kean said the pandemic has made it clear continued investment in frontline healthcare workers is crucial.

“This announcement shows we are continuing to provide record levels of investment in these frontline healthcare workers and the critical services they provide.”

Detective Velasco (Octavio Pisano) then becomes embroiled in his accuser’s problems, leading the SVU crew to defend him. There is nothing here that will convert newcomers to the series, but those attracted to the darker side of human nature may find themselves drawn in.

Myall Masters Compete at Ettalong

ONCE again Myall Masters Swimming Club have overcome the seasonal challenge of time out of the pool to compete at the indoor aquatic facility at Ettalong.

A mix of cross-training, open water and trips to heated swimming facilities in other towns have helped swimmers maintain fitness and technique gains made over the previous summer squad sessions to deliver some very strong performances.

Three Myall men competed in the 65-69 year age group; Mark Hill, Doug Gillespie and Shane O’Connor.

Mark‘s emergence as a 200m swimmer was confirmed with his second attempt at the distance in competition executed with

confidence following some open water and 50M training.

Similarly Doug, a seasoned competitor for the Myall squad, preferring sprints, had his highlight swim over a longer distance.

Doug swam strategically to bring home the final 25m of the 100M free for a solid finish.

Shane boldly entered his first short course 50M breaststroke, necessitating tackling two technical breakouts.

He surprised himself with his efficient execution of the dive start that he had to check that he hadn’t false started, finding himself far in front of the line-up when he came up for his first stroke.

He finished a not too shabby 5th.

Shane also contested the 50M freestyle.

Linda Stubbs and Sharon Taylor sharing the 55-59 age group covered a range of events on offer.

Linda, despite not getting wet since the pool closed, put on an astounding performance to win all three of her events over all freestyle distances.

Sharon did what appeared to be an exhibition swim of the 200M Medley with plenty of clear water having entered a too fast paced heat; the competition pushed Sharon to swim a PB for the distance.

A mixed team was fielded for the 50M Relay consisting of Linda, Doug, Mark and Christine, coming second to Campbelltown.

Club points placed Myall 9th overall from a total 25 clubs.

freestyle and breaststroke events in her characteristically effortless style to win her age-group by 4 points.

Christine helped spur world record holder Tony Goodwin to break yet another record when they swam next to each other in the 100M Breastroke.

Christine won the heat and her age group for her efforts.

Christopher Lock in 80-84 Men’s, having relaxed his training schedule after scooping the pool at the recent National competition still had enough residual fitness to win his age group.

Chris enjoyed following through with some friendly rivalry with a Warringah mate over the 100M and 50 M freestyle events, taking a trick each.

LADIES golf was abandoned on 24 May due to inclement weather conditions.

Newcastle Hunter District Ladies Golf Association 2022 Pennants finals

IT was a huge day here on our pristine Hawks Nest course last week when the club hosted the 2022 Pennants finals of the Newcastle Hunter District Ladies Golf Association.

This was the first time it has been held here since the

inception of the association some 31 years ago.

There were 8 Pennants teams (4 grades), team reserves and NHDLG Committee officials who travelled to Hawks Nest to enjoy the final playoffs.

Division 1 winners on the day were Maitland who caused an upset

by defeating Newcastle; Division 2 Horizons defeating Merewether; Division 3 Waratah defeating Maitland, and Bronze Division Pacific Dunes defeating Maitland.

Our Hawks Nest ladies pennant teams were unfortunately defeated in the lead up to the finals but

certainly played strongly throughout their matches and will certainly be in contention next year.

HNDLG Captain Dominique Kelly congratulated all players and thanked the ladies of Hawks Nest for their fabulous organisation of the day, their friendship

and the usual wonderful hospitality provided to the many visitors.

We were blessed with a fabulously sunny day and all visiting players commented and were impressed with the magnificent conditions of our course - considering most clubs in the Hunter district are still suffering

decided by the 'highest winning score' as drawn by the bar staff.

The morning winners were Geoff Page, Dave Perry, and Keith Smith with 16 points.

In the afternoon, on 17 points, were Col Buddle, Graham Reynolds, Graham Uff and Mark Nightingale.

The Garden Eatery voucher went to Dennis Ashbridge.

4 June The first two rounds of the Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club 16 and up competition were played

today with some big money prizes at stake.

Fortunately, the competition was blessed with some nice weather, albeit a touch cold with some fickle winds.

The organisation by our bowls coordinator Rob Young, and members of the Club’s Management committee, who provided the catering, was first class, as were the steaks provided by the Country Club.

After the first two rounds, the scoreboard was looking interesting with teams recording two

wins making the top of the leaderboard.

5 June The 16 and up competition resumed today with just the one morning round played to decide the overall winner.

The results were as follows: First place went to Col Buddle/Garry Macdonald, Ron Webster, and Jason Parks.

Warren Gooley, Greg Smith, and Jeff Baker came in a close second and Rob Young, Dave Garcia and Dave Perry took third.

There were several teams competing for the 'Bradman' prize, but Gary Wynne, John Moore and Ron Green managed the feat.

The highest score in Round 1 was won by Kev Barbie, Barry Goode, and Scott Fitzalan.

In Round 2 this was won by Graham Reynolds, Mark Nightingale, and Ross Barry, and in Round 3 it was won by Tom Short, Geoff Muggleton and Dennis Ashbridge.

1 JUNE You would not think that anyone in their right mind would venture forth to play an outdoor sport on a freezing, windy, and downright nasty day like today, but then again you might not be a lawn bowler.

Thirty-two intrepid bowlers took to the greens today with the wind doing some strange things to the bowls, but everyone played on.

The Club has entered two teams in this year’s Newcastle District Pennants competition.

One team is in Division 3. which will cater for players with a pennant grade of 4 or 5 and one team in Division 4 for players with a Pennant grade of 6 and 7.

Nominations are still being taken for the Club Championship Fours competition commencing next month.

OVER the last couple of weeks, and for the remainder of Term 2, Bulahdelah Central School students from both Primary and Secondary have the opportunity to participate in a Rugby League Program run by former student Tim Browne.

Tim is a retired NRL (National Rugby League) player, having played in the junior program for the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

He later played for the Manly Sea Eagles and the Canterbury Bulldogs before finishing his career at the Penrith Panthers in 2018.

Tim now operates his own successful Rugby League program, inspiring young people to dream big!
