The opening of the centre coincided with this year’s local government elections on 4 December.

With results still being finalised, the leading the polls with 17.15% of votes is Peter Epov’s group C, receiving 4,813 votes, therefore at least two members from his ticket should make the Council.

Alan Tickle will also join the Council with 12.94% of votes, amounting to 3,630 votes.

Liberal candidate Troy Fowler has taken 12.05% of the votes, or 3,382 votes.

Re-elected, Claire Pontin will be representing Labor on the Council with 10.26% (2,880 votes).

None of the other groups reached the progressive quota, however at the time of writing follow in the order of Paul Sandilands (6.95%), Jeremy Miller (6.93%), Dheera Smith (5.62%), Jessica Corkill (5.27%), Kathryn Bell (4.96%), and

Katheryn Smith (4.64%).

Current councillors Len Roberts and Karen Hutchinson may not be re-elected this term, with 4.38% (Roberts) and 4.40% (Hutchinson) of the total votes.

In the 2017 elections, Cr Roberts received 5,914 votes to his ticket - just under five times more than this election, whilst Cr Hutchinson received 2,112 votes, just over a thousand more than this election.

Port Stephens Welcomes New Recruits

By Tara CAMPBELL PORT Stephens-Hunter Police District have welcomed three new Probationary Constables to the district.

Class 350 are the newest attested recruits from the NSW Police Force who were sworn in on Friday 3 December 2021.

From Monday 6 December 2021, 218 recruits will commence duties across the state, seeing them undertake a year of on-the-job training and completion of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice by distance education with Charles Sturt University before being confirmed to the rank of constable.

The local district welcomes Probationary Constables Kayla Wilson, Emma Nicholson and Darren Rondo to the Port StephensHunter Police District.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller welcomed those attesting to the NSW Police Force and said the 218 recruits were joining at a unique time in the state’s history.

“2021 has been another challenging year for NSW, with police taking on an unprecedented role in protecting the community from COVID-19,” Commissioner Fuller said.

“With our role in pandemic response winding down as the state progresses along the road to recovery, I want to encourage

our newest recruits to remember what’s at the heart of everything we do as police officers – community safety.”

Education and Training Commander, Assistant Commissioner Dean Smith, said the Class of 350 had been presented with unique challenges throughout their training due to COVID-19, but had shown resilience to reach this proud moment.

“The 218 students were first required to study at home for a lengthy period, and once on site, were placed in lockdown at the academy – unable to take weekend leave to see their families until two weeks ago,” Assistant Commissioner Smith said.

“I congratulate them for the strength and dedication they have shown – it sets them up well for long and distinguished careers.”

Class 350 has a total of 162 men and 55 women sworn, with 192 Australian-born recruits and 26 born overseas in countries including countries such as Afghanistan, Bosnia, China, Greece and Ireland.

The annual work Christmas party is a time to reflect on the year that has been and unwind with colleagues.

Employers have a legal responsibility to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees when they are participating in an authorised work function, and to ensure that they are vigilant in preventing bullying, sexual harassment or other forms of discrimination that can occur.

In order to avoid the risk of employees causing harm to themselves (or others) and potential legal problems, employers should consider the following top 5 tips: 1.

Remind employees in advance of the Christmas party that it is an extension of the workplace, and inappropriate behaviour may lead to disciplinary action being taken in the same way it would as if it took place during work hours.

2.

Have a clear start and finish time for the function, and inform employees in advance that any ‘after party’ is not the authorised work function.

3.

Monitor alcohol consumption and ensure there is sufficient food provided.

Avoid open bars and shots.

The consumption of alcohol can affect employees’ behaviour and if employees are intoxicated, there is a greater likelihood that they will engage in risky behaviour.

4.

Refresh staff on your Social Media Policy to ensure that inappropriate photos, videos, or comments are not taken, made and/or posted online during or after the party.

5.

Have a complaints policy and procedure for dealing with any complaints promptly and in the appropriate manner.

MidCoast marks Black Summer anniversary THE MidCoast Local Government Area is continuing its recovery from the devastating 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfire season.

Two years on, the community is rebuilding, having also navigated flooding and a global pandemic.

This November marked the two year anniversary of the worst day of the Black Summer bushfire season that left the MidCoast community reeling from loss of life and property.

Val Schaefer, Community Development Project Officer for Mission Australia said, “The community is resilient and determined to rebuild.

“Mission Australia has been working with the support of the MidCoast 4 Kids initiative, to support the recovery.

“This year we have rolled out the Community Wellbeing and Participation Program for bushfire affected communities on behalf of the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network.

“As part of the program The Youth Mental Health First Aid program offered a series of four courses for educators and people who work directly with young people in professional, volunteer or social settings.

“It facilitates vital training to help recognise and respond to the signs of poor mental health.

“Two courses have been held already in Taree and Foster with 35 people from schools, youth groups, disability support and sporting associations completing the

“The program’s focus is on three key pillars that have been proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness as well as a strong focus on Connection, Purpose, Kindness, Emotional Literacy and Physical Health.

“The program will benefit children impacted by bushfires, COVID-19, and recent flooding.

“It will also promote positive wellbeing more generally and will be rolled out with the support of MidCoast 4 Kids.

“Eight schools and eight early learning centres from across the MidCoast are participating in this program and have so far taken part in their first information session with the Resilience Project education team members,” she said.

Bridge and Heavy Vehicle funding available APPLICATIONS are now open for local councils to apply for new funding under the Bridges Renewal Program (BRP) and Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP).

Both programs are now running concurrently and will be open all year round, to provide greater flexibility for applicants.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said improvements to the guidelines were designed to deliver infrastructure support in a more timely manner for freight operators and motorists.

“Funding will be available for up to 80% of the total cost of each project and only local councils are eligible to apply,” Dr Gillespie said.

“The programs are designed to support new projects, where construction is additional to an existing program of works.

“Projects that seek to trial new approaches to transport, safety and productivity are encouraged under the HVSPP.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said keeping heavy vehicles safe and moving on our roads was key to maintaining a strong economy.

“Investing $250 million to make bridges safer and heavy vehicle routes more productive will ensure Australian businesses can stay connected to markets and continue to supply the products Australians need to live,” Mr Joyce said.

“Projects funded through these programs also create jobs for local suppliers and businesses, delivering an economic boost to regional economies and driving their growth.”

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz said as part of the continuous assessment, successful projects would be announced on a rolling basis.

“Both programs are well known and well regarded by state, territory and local government authorities,” Mr Buchholz said.

“Accepting applications on an ongoing basis means applicants can plan and submit projects when they are needed.”

"The Liberal and Nationals Government will continue to build on our strong record of investment in these initiatives, with more than $760 million locked in for the BRP and $607 million for the HSVPP, and ongoing funding into the future.

Becoming a child-safe organisation MIDCOAST Council is asking for community feedback on an action plan designed to build childsafe practices across the organisation.

“Ensuring that children feel safe at all times when in our facilities and accessing our services is an important priority for us,” said Council’s General Manager, Adrian Panuccio.

In 2018, Council committed to become a child safe organisation,

as it adopted the Child Protection policy.

“Since then we’ve developed a draft action plan that will guide our efforts to ensuring that we are child-safe,” said Mr Panuccio.

The Draft Child Safe Action Plan outlines actions Council will take to ensure it meets the 10 standards which form the basis of new legislation as part of the NSW Child-Safe Scheme.

The Child Safe Action

Plan is about making Council’s activities and services child safe.

Council is now asking the community to let them know if there are any other actions relating to Council activities you think we should include in the draft plan.

LOCAL councils are being encouraged to nominate priority flood mitigation projects for Federal funding.

Applications are now open under a new round of the National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program.

Applications will only be accepted from state and territory governments, with local councils urged to bring forward important infrastructure projects for consideration.

Lyne Dr David Gillespie said this second round would focus on levees, levee systems, infrastructure to promote floodplain restoration and green infrastructure initiatives (such as reforestation, greenways along floodplains or bioswales) that mitigate flood risk.

“Federal funding of up to $10 million will be available for each eligible application which may include an unlimited number of individual projects, with

the state government to cocontribute,” Dr Gillespie said.

“This is an opportunity for councils to secure critical support for infrastructure that directly reduces the risk of flooding in our communities, or directly reduces the impact of future floods.

Program guidelines for the National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program 2021-22 are available at www.recovery. gov.au.

MIDCOAST Council now has a clearer picture of how the community uses and values water, thanks to the hundreds of people who took part in a recent community water survey.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said the survey indicated the community was keen to learn more about water.

“It’s great to see people are still thinking about how important water is after the 2019-2020 drought.

“People want to learn

more about water – how to save it, the science behind it, how water and wastewater gets to and from their homes, and what water security options we’re looking at for the future.”

Mr Scott said the survey responses would help inform a range of initiatives to improve the community’s water knowledge.

“It’s in our best interest as a community for everyone to have a good understanding of where their water comes from, how we manage it and what impact our actions can have on the health of our

water systems.

“With our Integrated Water Cycle Management strategy currently under review, we’re particularly keen to raise awareness about the issues we face and get people thinking about how we can overcome these challenges going forward.”

The strategy guides Council’s direction for the sustainable management of water and sewer services over a 30-year period.

With a range of options being investigated to improve water security across the MidCoast, Mr Scott said he looked forward to working with an informed public when the time came to

discuss these options with the community.

“Water is something we all share and can’t live without. It’s our goal to make sure everyone understands this and is equipped with the knowledge and awareness to make sustainable water choices.”

Weekly Emergency Services Update

The operation involved more than 30 officers from the Manning-Great Lakes Police District and Traffic & Highway Patrol.

During the operation, police conducted 687 roadside breath tests that resulted in 13 positive drug tests, 77 traffic infringement notices,

11 24-hour license suspensions, 13 defect notices, two drink drinking offences and laid a total of 10 charges.

Marine Rescue At approximately 12:40pm on Friday 3 December, Marine Rescue Port Stephens were called to a 7m cabin runabout which was having battery issues just northeast of Broughton Island.

After a bumpy trip past the heads the PS31 was soon on scene and after an unsuccessful jump start, the vessel had to be towed and transferred to Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage to take to Karuah Boat Ramp.

ELIGIBLE community groups are being invited to apply for a new funding round to support ongoing recovery and build resilience and preparedness for future disaster events.

Funding of between $2,000 and $15,000 will be available for community development and capacity building projects and activities, which must be completed by 30 May 2022.

“The projects and activities can either support ongoing recovery needs in a community, or they may improve the capacity and capability of community

members to respond to future disasters,” said MidCoast Council’s Manager Libraries and Community Services, Chris Jones.

“The funding may also be used to purchase items of equipment required to deliver these projects and activities.”

To be eligible, organisations must meet specific entity criteria and have an Australian Business Number.

The project or activity must also be delivered within the MidCoast local government area.

“We encourage any eligible organisation that wants to deliver a project or activity to improve the recovery and resilience of their community following our bushfire events to take a look at these grants and apply,” said Mr Jones.

Round one of the Disaster Recovery Grant Program delivered vital equipment such as defibrillators and first aid equipment for communities and the purchase of a drone to assist the Rural Fire Service.

Round one has also delivered the construction of storage sheds for community gardens, replacement of damaged equipment after floods and water tanks for

community halls.

In addition, funding was provided for resilience workshops for young people.

Plus you don’t mention whether yours is a single or double storey home because whether inside or out, you may have to hire scaffolding to reach those ‘beyond the ladder’ areas. Safety first! HSC Exams Over

THE 2021 Higher School Certificate exams officially ended at 12:30 on Friday December 3, when 3,756 Food Technology students finished their final exam.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said it was a momentous day for the Class of 2021, who have shown incredible resilience and hard work to get to this point.

“Today officially marks the end of 13 years of schooling for 69,000 Year 12 students and I am incredibly happy to see them so triumphantly reach the finish line,” Ms Mitchell said.

Powering the Hunter’s future WORKERS in the Hunter and Central Coast are set to benefit from the powering up of renewable energy projects in the regions, with registrations of interest now open for the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).

Treasurer and Minister for Energy and Environment Matt Kean said the REZ will connect multiple energy generators and storage projects across the regions, which will help industry thrive and create the low carbon jobs of the future.

“This new REZ will ensure the Hunter and Central Coast remain the powerhouse of New South Wales, with 60 percent of the State’s homes, businesses and industry already powered out of these regions,” Mr Kean said.

“The Hunter-Central Coast REZ will provide cheap, reliable and clean electricity for the homes and businesses of NSW, while supporting new job creation as we shift to a low carbon future.

“The NSW Government has the nationleading policies and plans in place to deliver on our commitment to halve our State’s emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050.”

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said there are already 13 renewable energy and battery storage projects in the Hunter and Central Coast, which are approved or progressing through the planning system. they have achieved over the past two years.

“The resilience, focus and adaptability they have shown will serve them well in the next chapter of their life, whether that is university, vocational training, or employment.

“To safely deliver 400,000 individual exam sessions statewide with no disruption amidst a global pandemic is a huge success.

29 NOVEMBER Well the Pennant season for this year is well and truly over but that did not stop the various Pennant teams from celebrating and reminiscing over lunch today in the Garden Eatery restaurant.

The success, or otherwise, of the four grades making up the First National Tea Gardens 2021 Pennant side was reviewed.

The 'Mighty Sevens' told of several hard luck stories, not the least being their lack of success on slow greens.

The Sixes did very

well, and but for a few 'ifs, buts and maybes', might have been in the mix in the playoffs.

The Fives really had a tough season and played possibly a grade too high this year, but they did their best and represented Tea Gardens with distinction.

The Fours made it to the Zone playoffs after a near perfect winning streak.

The appalling weather conditions experienced over at Soldiers Point during their playoff matches bought their winning run to a close.

The best part of the whole experience was the

pride in our Club and the camaraderie we all enjoyed.

Cannot wait to do it again.

1 December The Wednesday Nominated Triples has been flirting with the weather for weeks and the 48 players turning up to play today were caught out.

Only the morning game was played.

The winners were decided by the 'highest winning score'.

The winners on the grass with 21 points were Tom Short, Dennis Ashbridge and Geoffrey Muggleton.

The winners on the synthetic were Rob Jones, Chris May and Bill Heylbut with 18 points.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Ron Rowe.

Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for donating the voucher and their support of Men’s bowls.

5 December The Sunday bowlers had a most enjoyable day today with a good field of 24 players taking the opportunity to play in their last event for the year.

Light rain early did no more than settle the dust and games were just finishing when rain started again.

Winners of the magic bar draw were Ron and Karen (skipper) Green with the highest winning margin of 19.

A Christmas break up followed with a Bar BBQ lunch enjoyed by all.

Sunday bowls will resume on the 16 of January 2022.

Thanks were expressed to the organisers of Sunday bowls, Bev and Frank Dunn.

They extended their Christmas greetings to all the bowlers and their families.

I will be reporting next week on the Clubs combined Presentation Night to be held tomorrow night.

The final day of organised bowls for 2021 is Wednesday 15 December.

A game will be played in the morning followed by lunch.

LOCAL Surf Life Saving Clubs can apply for grants up to $500,000 following the opening of the NSW Government’s Surf Club Facility Program.

Up to $4 million is available to Surf Life Saving Clubs across NSW for the upgrade, restoration and construction of facilities.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin

said local surf clubs could receive grants of $30,000$500,000 for projects that will enable them to continue to keep people safe on our beaches.

“Our local surf life saving volunteers provide a world-class service to keep safe in the water and on our beaches,” Mr Martin said.

“It’s vital surf life savers have modern fit for purpose

facilities, I encourage all local clubs to apply for funding.”

Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said the Surf Club Facility Program, worth $16 million over four years, will build, upgrade and restore surf life saving facilities.

“We have nearly 130 Surf Life Saving Clubs here in NSW which are the hub of our coastal communities,” Mrs Ward said.

“This support will allow significant upgrades, so the 75,000 club members across the state who do such important work volunteering at our beaches can focus on saving lives.”

Surf Life Saving NSW President George Shales OAM said safe, accessible and secure rescue facilities across NSW remain a top priority.

“Last year our volunteer

surf lifesavers performed over 3,000 rescues, 143,000 preventative actions and 7,000 first aid treatments.

“The Surf Club Facility Program will improve the ongoing important community service our lifesavers deliver,” Mr Shales said.

Hunter Surf Life Saving Clubs to have benefitted previously from the program

include Cooks Hill, Dixon Park, Redhead and Stockton.

Applications for this round of grants close on 21 January 2022.

Grants between $30,000 to $500,000 are available for each project.

THE Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest branch of the Red Cross Emergency Services Team has been awarded the Distinguished Team Award at the recent AGM in Sydney for their work during the fires of 2019-2020.

The evacuation centre in Taree was attended

by Jo-Anne Pearse, Team Leader Narelle Murray Karen Markham and Jenny Kelly.

The ladies were then activated to work in

outreach, Narelle and Karen in Nabiac and Jenny in the Macleay district, assisting in ensuring that people were receiving financial services and referrals as needed.

Following a survey of the participants it is estimated that on average they spent $1183 per person or a total of over $305,000 adding to the takings of many business locations in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens during the tournament.

Hawks Nest Golf Club has a reputation of running great tournaments with many of these visitors coming back time after time and the comments from this event will ensure this and other local events will operate successfully for many years to come.

“Thank you for another well run Classic, thanks to all who contributed including the greens staff who

presented a beautiful course,” one attendee commented.

“Thanks again for organising such a lovely event and we look forward to attending next year,” said another.

“Just like to thank you and the team for a great week of golf and a great dinner dance, we all had a fabulous time.

“See you again next year,” said a final happy attendee.

This is just one of several events run by Hawks Nest Golf Club including the Veterans Week of Golf and the Ladies Open in February, Myall Classic in May, the Pro Am in August as well as Charity Days for the Rural Fire Service.

In 2021, the Club was chosen as a venue for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Fundraiser and a great turnout raised the second highest return of any golf day for the year, often held in towns much bigger than ours.

HAWKS Nest Golf Club recently held their Summer Classic 2021, one of the most successful events held in the area. Over 250 visitors descended on the villages for the five day tournament from as far afield as Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Armidale and many places in between.

Running over five days most of the participants arrived on Saturday 6 November or Sunday 7 November and stayed until Friday 11 or Saturday 12 November.

They spread across most accommodations, from luxury apartments at the Boathouse to holiday home rentals and Reflections Holiday Parks.

They wined and dined at all styles of food outlets, restaurants, clubs and takeaway food outlets, and shopped at many of the
