BIG4 River Myall Holiday Resort in Bulahdelah has snagged the top spot of highest ranked BIG4 park in the country.

The rankings are based on reviews submitted across various platforms, including Tripadvisor, Google and customer feedback forms.

Gary Ekert, who owns and operates the Bulahdelah BIG4 with his wife, Kim, were blown away and humbled by the results.

“We only opened in December last year and it was during one of the worst droughts we’ve ever had,” said Mr Ekert.

“Then we had the bushfires in January, floods in February and then COVID-19 since March.”

“It’s been a challenging year to say the least.”

BIG4 River Myall Holiday Resort reopened in June with the ease of regional travel restrictions.

“We’ve had high occupancy since we reopened, especially on weekends which tend to be around 90 per cent full,” he said.

Mr Ekert said that the resort is kept to a high standard which he believes is a big factor in the win.

“It’s brand new so we’ve been able to sculpt the place into what we see as a wellresourced destination that people want to come and spend a lot of time at,” he said.

“BIG4 is all about customer service – greeting guests with a smile and treating them as the valued customers they are,” he continued.

“We’re also particular about cleanliness and make sure everything is up to a high standard which I think people really appreciate.”

Feral pigs not welcome

HUNTER Local Land Services Biosecurity team is working closely with the Bulahdelah and District Wild Dog Group to control and remove new feral pig populations that have entered the Myall valley over the last 18 months.

The pigs are having a negative impact on sensitive habitats that are currently regenerating from last season’s devastating bushfires.

They also cause damage and disrupt important breeding habitats for native fauna and have even been known to kill and eat small native mammals, frogs and birds.

Hunter Local Land Services Biosecurity Team Leader Luke Booth said feral pigs can carry a range of diseases and the community is working together to eradicate this new population.

“Over the last 18 months our Biosecurity

Officers and members of the Bulahdelah and District Wild Dog Group have trapped and removed 77 pigs from the area adjoining the Myall National Park,” said Luke.

“Feral pigs cause a huge amount of damage to native habitats, and we are particularly concerned at the impact an established population could have on sensitive areas still recovering from last summer’s bushfires.

“It is great to see the community and landholders are actively working together to stop the feral pig population expanding in this area.”

A population of pigs were detected in the Myall Ramsar wetlands, an area valued for it’s important biodiversity of flora and fauna.

The littoral rainforest in the wetlands also hosts significant fauna including the

Green Thighed Frog, Stuttering Frog, Grey Headed Flying Fox and Spotted-tailed Quoll.

More than 22 pigs were trapped and removed from land surrounding the fragile wetland habitats over the last eight months alone.

Feral pigs create significant soil disturbance, altering drainage, increasing turbidity and sedimentation and greatly assisting the spread of weeds.

Feral pigs can also carry disease and parasites that affect stock and pose a disease risk to humans (eg brucellosis). They are a major potential host of a number of exotic diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease.

Last week we considered Arbitration as a way to avoid the long delays currently experienced by families involved in family law court proceedings. Another option to resolve family law property and parenting disputes, without the involvement of the court, is Mediation.

Mediation is a process where parties attend with an impartial third party who will facilitate discussions with a view to assisting them to reach a compromise agreement. It can occur with or without lawyers.

Mediation is available in both parenting and financial matters, and in the parenting matters it can also be referred to as Family Dispute Resolution.

To give yourself the best prospects of success, it is important to be properly prepared for a mediation, including: • Knowing what you are legally entitled to before entering into the negotiations; • In property matters,

establishing the asset pool which is being divided; being aware of any taxation or duty consequences of potential outcomes; and knowing your borrowing capacity; • In parenting matters, considering any existing commitments of the children or parents, such as extra-curricular activities or work commitments, and any idiosyncrasies of the child which may impact on the arrangements which can be practically implemented.

In our experience, mediation often achieves a settlement, which can be then be recorded as court orders. The benefit to parties is that they maintain control over their own financial and parenting decisions; rather than handing that decision making power to a judge who knows neither them nor their children. It can also result in a quicker and cost-effective resolution of the dispute.

Riding for their lives

THE Great Cycle Challenge may be a big test of strength, endurance and resilience for your average bike rider like Brad Morante – but it’s nothing like the challenge that kids with cancer face every day of their little lives.

Every October, tens of thousands of Australians take to their bikes to raise money for the ground-breaking cancer research being done in the labs at Children’s Medical Research Institute.

In the eight years since the challenge

started, the riders have raised more than $20 million.

Brad Morante from Hawks Nest has been doing the Great Cycle Challenge since 2017.

In total he has raised more than $24,000 which he credits to his tight knit community.

“The proudest achievement of my life, besides raising my three beautiful kids, is the money I have raised for GCC. “None of which would be possible of course without the amazing support from the townsfolk of this small seaside town, my friends and family that donate each year.’’

well, the importance of cancer research is Amanda Wigman. Her daughter Sophie was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

“This could happen to anyone – it’s a club that no one wants to be in,” Ms Wigman said.

It was a familiar feeling for Amanda.

She had fought Hodgkin’s Lymphoma as a teenager. She had also lost her mother to cancer.

Children’s Medical Research Institute’s scientist Dr Tony Cesare studies the causes of cancer from the time that our cells are forming.

He thanked all those who have taken part in the Great Cycle Challenge from its

inception to today.

“I am enormously thankful for the community fundraising efforts in Australia,’’ Dr Cesare said.

“Community efforts, like the Great Cycle Challenge, have provided my laboratory with essential funding for new cutting-edge projects.

“The positive impact of community efforts inspires our work and gives hope to cancer patients.’’

THE Myall Coast Community Carols Committee reached the decision last week not to proceed with the Carols Concert in 2020.

Michael Harvey, Music Director and Producer said, “We have delayed this decision for as long as possible, due to the changing government restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 virus, with respect to public and musical events.”

“At the time of writing, there is no way we would be allowed to proceed with the Carols Concert,” Mr Harvey said.

“Even if some of these restrictions were to be lifted before Christmas, there would not be enough time now to prepare for this special event.”

The Carols Concert was a huge success last year, and also in 2018.

“We are very grateful for the community support the concerts received,” Mr Harvey said.

“We, the Myall Coast Community Carols committee, and all our sponsors and participants, wish you all a very Happy and Blessed Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous New Year.”

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

Galleries in the Gardens Student Art Award AN extraordinary, three metres high drawing has taken top prize in the inaugural Galleries in the Gardens Student Art Award.

“Its emotional representation is powerful, emotive and reflective brilliantly conceived and executed.”

Jake wins $500, a certificate and the opportunity to display and sell at The Gallery through

the year.

Highly Commended were Annabella Whyman for ‘Mi Familia’, a joyful family depiction, and Natasha Veith for ‘Mirror Image’, six delicate watercolour portraits of her mum and herself.

Each received certificates and $50.

LOCAL fundraising group The Pearls of Port Stephens have continued to support the community through monitory donations, food and the purchase of clothes during a difficult 2020 and COVID pandemic.

Also purchased locally were pantry supplies, delivered to Got Your Back Sista, a centre which offers help for women and children escaping the trauma of domestic violence.

The most recent Pearls donation of $200.00 was made to The Myall Coast Toy Library a well deserving volunteer run, not-for-profit organisation offering a wonderful selection of toys from age group 0 to 99 years, for an annual membership fee.

Council is asking the community to provide further input on the Cultural Plan.

Advice for Aspiring Writers WITH the annual Port Stephens Literature Awards closing for entries on 30th October, coordinating judge Lloyd Hogg has some advice for aspiring writers.

“You really must capture the reader's attention in the first hundred words or so,” he said. “As with a good novel, the reader needs to be drawn into the story and wants to see how it develops on the next page,” he added. “It's all about roughing out your entry and then working on it until you are satisfied that it has captured what you want to say in an interesting way,” he said.

strong developing storyline. They decide on their own 'Readers' Choice' award before handing the short stories on to the three finalists' judges,” he stated.

Midcoast Council is preparing its first Cultural Plan to strengthen the creative community and invigorate the local economy.

MIDCOAST Council is preparing its first Cultural Plan to strengthen the creative community and invigorate the local economy.

The first round of engagement for the plan was held in July.

More than 650 members of the community shared ideas, beliefs and passions, helping to shape a vision for the Cultural Plan that is anchored in local conservation and research.

This consultation also resulted in four clear focus points identified by the community.

“We heard that culture is about our scenic Landscape and Places, our resilient First Nations and rich Cultural Diversity, our talented Creatives and Industry and our dynamic Infrastructure and Spaces,” explained Deb Tuckerman, MidCoast Council’s Manager of Growth, Economic Development

and Tourism.

“We have now prepared a framework based on these key areas, with an overarching vision and principles and we’re so happy to see the plan taking shape based on what the community has shared.”

Council is again asking the community to provide further input on the Cultural Plan, to better support MidCoast’s thriving culture and creative excellence, now and into the future. This second round of engagement is an important check-in with the community prior to finalising a draft Cultural Plan expected to be placed on exhibition early in the new year.

“This time we want to know what the community thinks about the draft vision, principles and key areas of the Cultural Plan.

It’s important we get this planning right,” said Deb. Council has made it

clear that the community’s involvement in the process is critical to preparing a Cultural Plan that meets local needs.

The second round of community engagement will run from 30 September to Monday 26 October.

There’s a range of online events planned, as well as a survey and smaller face-toface opportunities for locals to have their say.

“You can also find some of our early research in the MidCoast Cultural Plan Discussion Paper that’s available online on the Have Your Say page,” added Deb. “We strongly encourage you to carry face masks in your pocket or bag.

“Wear one when you’re in public and it’s difficult to maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres from others.

$1.6 million to reseed Karuah River oyster reef PORT Stephens will be among the areas to share in the Australian Government’s $61.7 million budget spending on environmental restoration and recovery measures through the $1 billion COVID Relief Fund.

Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, said Karuah River is one of 13 areas to share in a $20 million investment in rejuvenating local fish stocks and creating spectacular tourism dive sites through the rescue of native marine ecosystems.

“The project is working in abandoned oyster lease areas and using remnant oysters to reseed the four hectares of new

reefs,” Dr Gillespie said.

Dr Gillespie said the Commonwealth Government's $1.6 million investment will build on the NSW Governments 1-hectare reef established in May 2020 in partnership with local oyster growers and the community.

“This initiative will sustain up to 10 jobs and see 7 local contracts issued. That is just the sort of boost the local economy needs as we rebuild post the COVID-19 pandemic.

I recently went on a dating site and clearly said I wanted to ‘date’. Like in the 1960s when you’d go out, get to know each other, kiss if the mood took hold, but basically take it slowly.

The problem is, everyone I’ve met thinks this is just code for being a man whore. Even the ones who don’t want you to move to home base within a few dates are confused as to why you are happily sitting on second base. It’s a minefield out there.

I’m not sure when discussing the various stages of lovemaking, we should do it through euphemisms, particularly ones relating to baseball.

I personally find it a very non-sexual game that not many have had a chance to play. I’m more familiar with the far more female-oriented Vigaro.

We could get into all sorts of derogatory puns here, but this is a family newspaper.

Now, with bases, the issue is not everyone uses the same base definitions. First base for some may be hand-holding. For others it may be kissing. As you progress, there is a serious danger of sliding off the base altogether – in fact being completely debased.

Now, to the second matter. Your dating profile. You’ve said you wanted to ‘date’ like in the ‘1960s’. Mr TK, I don’t know how much time you’ve spent in the 1960s, but it wasn’t called the Swinging 60s for nothing. I had to question some people who had dated in that era and they told me it was a veritable hotbed of hedonism and debauchery.

A time when fashion, writing, art, music, and the very closely related concept of sexual freedom flourished. A time when Nina Simone was singing about wanting a little sugar in her bowl, Zeppelin was howling about a whole lotta love and Aretha was feeling like a natural woman (she wasn’t singing about quinoa here, Mr TK). Why not try meeting women in different places, like the school gate?

Those ones will be too emotionally and physically exhausted to want anything more than a Bex and a good lie down.

IGA Bulahdelah is set to officially open up shop after months of renovations.

Owner, Darren Singh, said that customers will notice a lot of big differences between the former store and the new one.

“Our new shop is be almost double the size of our previous one, with wider aisles to accommodate all customer needs, and much more variety of products on offer,” he said.

New Click and Collect at MidCoast Libraries

CLICK and Collect has been rolled out across the MidCoast’s 11 libraries, offering members a simple new way to borrow.

Chris Jones, MidCoast Council Libraries Manager, said that the new service was born from COVID as a minimum-contact way to engage with local libraries.

“We wanted to give people as much opportunity

as possible to access our library collections during these challenging times,” he said.

Members need to complete an online form which allows them to select the items they would like to borrow, including books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and more.

“Members can request up to 20 items with this service, and staff will notify them by SMS or email when

their order is ready for pick up,” Mr Jones continued.

MidCoast Libraries have experienced steady borrowing from customers through COVID-19, and have even seen an increase in service usage.

“Click and Collect will provide just another way people can access the collections which is easy and contactless; that’s what we know is important to our communities,” said Mr

Jones.

Click and Collect will be rolled out as a trial service and if successful, will continue to be offered to the community.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Myall Coast Vets Club News 30 September Today we had 52 on the greens with a few more bowlers returning after a Covid break. Welcome back gents.

The winners were Lon Richards, Peter Gurney and Keith Smith with 19 points on a 6-end countback. 4 teams finished with 19 points.

The runners-up were Geoff Page and Greg Smith with 14 points on a 2-end countback. 2 teams finished with 14 points.

The Myall Bistro voucher went to “Lucky” Kev Barbie.

For your info the points are worked out as follows: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and one point for a winning end. The points are tallied over both rounds on the day. Countbacks on winning ends to decide a tie.

2 October The Women’s Bowling Club hosted their annual “Oncology” Day which was well supported by our Club members.

For a relatively small Club, the ladies never cease to amaze with $4,300.00 raised on the day to be donated to the Mater Hospital Oncology Unit.

For those not familiar with this unit it is the most incredible place doing some fabulous work.

I have heard it remarked on as possibly the best in the world and we have it on our doorstep.

It is very worthy of the support it receives.

In other news: There has been a change to the mixed pairs playing days.

Depending on the number of teams who nominate it will be played over 2 weekends.

24/25th October and 30th Oct/1st Nov. All games will be in the afternoon stating at 1pm with a 12.40pm roll-up. The amended rules / times of play will be displayed shortly.

Patrons Day is on Wednesday 21st October with $500 in prize money on offer.

Single entries only with teams drawn on the day.

This event is only open to members of the Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club.

The Women's Bowling VClub are organising a Melbourne Cup game on the morning of the cup.

Details and a nomination form are on the board.

At this stage only members of the Tea Gardens Men’s and Ladies Bowling Clubs are permitted to play at any of our events. No visitors are allowed at this time.

On Tuesday 29th September, the Semi Final of the Club Championship Triples and social bowls. Bev Rhodes, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker had a close game against Bette Saillard, Robyn Webster and Dale Winter. The score was even on the 9th and 11th ends, on the 19th end Dale's team were ahead by 1 shot 17 v 16. The next 2 ends resulted in Pat's ladies gaining 3 shots, winning 19 v 17. Ingrid Luck, Loretta Baker and Maynie Roberts took an early lead and never looked back in their contest against Jan Coomer, Dot Dallas and Jeanette Emmett claiming victory on the 20th end 21 v 12.
