Supporting girls’ education in developing countries THE time has come for the Myall U3A Art Group to, yet again, leap into action.

In keeping with U3A’s emphasis on learning, local art group members have come together in support of ‘8×8 to Educate’, a social enterprise which supports the education of girls in developing nations.

8×8 to Educate was launched in 2018 by 16-year-old artist Katura Halleday.

This extraordinary young lady organises an annual 8×8 to Educate art exhibition, from which 100% of the proceeds go towards funding a scholarship program which provides girls in Mozambique and

Katura believes that aiding the education of girls in these and other underdeveloped countries ensures that they will ultimately be able to effect significant change within their communities.

Sonja Ridden, Myall U3A art class coordinator, said, “When I met Katura at an art workshop early last year I was so impressed by the enthusiasm, commitment and determination of this young lady, all of 16 years of age at that time, that I immediately felt drawn towards assisting her in achieving her passionate dream.

“When I told the art class about this amazing project, many of its members were so touched by it that they instantly

agreed to participate.

“It’s truly heart-warming to see the generosity of our art-class members and I just love seeing their willingness to give of their many blessings in order to bless those less fortunate.

“I consider it a true honour to lead such a lovely group of people!” Sonja said.

as a seachange and treechange destination is undeniable and COVID-19 has accelerated the migration from the cities as people have embraced working from home.

An independent report reflecting the community’s experiences of housing and the planning system in regional NSW has been released by the NSW Government.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the Regional Housing Taskforce report includes feedback from community members and councils from Hunter.

“I welcome the independent findings by the Regional Housing Taskforce and am pleased to see the views of the Hunter expressed in the report,” Mr Martin said.

“Particularly around the challenges of housing diversity, shortage of rental

incentives and requirements and the cost of development.”

Anyone that has been looking for rental properties in Port Stephens knows that properties are hard to find and some long term tenants have been squeezed out of the market with owners opting for the higher returns of offering properties for holiday rentals.

“Our community is a unique part of regional NSW and it’s important the NSW Government considers the needs of the Hunter when it delivers its policy.”

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the report details feedback from consultation with more than 500 people across regional NSW. “The Regional Housing Taskforce's report gives us a clear picture of the unique factors affecting housing in each regional community, and I want to thank every person who took part for their contributions,” Mr

Stokes said.

“The report confirms COVID-19 has accelerated an existing trend of people moving from the city to the bush, and this has had an acute impact on regional housing markets.

“The findings tell us what regional communities need to better support their housing needs and I look forward to receiving the taskforce’s detailed recommendations in October.”

The key issues raised in the findings report include: the need for greater prioritisation on the coordination and delivery of infrastructure to support new homes; the need for collaboration between all levels of Government, the housing development industry and the community to develop the right type of housing where people need it; calls to speed up planning processes and reduce duplication, particularly where opportunities to provide housing are time-critical; and addressing the demand for more affordable and diverse housing in line with changing demographics, jobs growth, natural disasters, and migration trends.

Business Adapts Again

Business owners have turned to online trade, click and collect and pivoting as the pandemic continues to offer challenges.

COVID-19 has changed the landscape for businesses with staff being required to ensure public compliance of health orders such as signing in with QR Codes.

New public health advice released this week sets out how NSW businesses will continue to tackle COVID-19 as the state begins to reopen.

Hospitality, tourism, beauty and gyms all have significant challenges including

limited numbers on the premises.

If a staff member tests positive, whether they are vaccinated or not vaccinated, they must self-isolate for 14 days and follow the advice from NSW Health.

Businesses will refer to their COVID-19 Safety Plan and risk assessment approach for further instructions on notifying other staff.

Businesses must inform NSW Health if three or more employees test positive for COVID-19 in a seven-day period.

NSW Health guidelines will enable businesses to assess workplace risk if a COVID-19 case is identified and confirm actions to be taken.

THE Port Stephens Oyster Reef Restoration project is delivering water quality improvements to the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park and supporting more fish!

Monitoring of the reefs has shown that in the first summer over 50 million baby oysters naturally recruited to the new rock and shell reef bases.

The newly recruited oysters are now up to half the size of fully established adult oysters and are starting to form a 3-dimensional oyster habitat - like natural oyster reefs!

Although it takes many years for restored oyster reefs to function the same as a natural oyster reef, in a year since the new reefs were

created, they are already filtering water, and helping to improve water quality, at over half the rate of natural oyster reefs!

Fish numbers are up too!

Fish abundance has increased by 10% at restoration sites and the number of fish species using the area has increased by 15%.

NSW DPI Fisheries scientists continue to monitor the reefs, so stay tuned to follow the results.

The Port Stephens Oyster Reef Restoration project is delivered by NSW DPI in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, Australia with funding from the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy and the Australian Government’s Reef Builder initiative which aims to protect and restore 13 shellfish reefs across Australia.

On a positive note there is high consumer confidence and if spending after the last lockdown is any indication businesses can expect a welcome increase in traffic as we navigate to a new way of life with COVID.

The new health orders include the fact that businesses will be responsible for taking reasonable measures to stop unvaccinated people entering premises.

For example, having prominent signs stating requirements, Service NSW QR codes, staff checking vaccination status upon entry and only accepting valid forms of evidence of vaccination.

Authorised officers will monitor businesses re-opening, particularly those that have vaccination requirements, for example hospitality, retail, gyms, and personal services (e.g. hair, beauty).

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia has a clear principle that the Court should only hear an application to vary an earlier Order if it is satisfied that there is some changed circumstance which would justify such a serious step.

This is known as the “rule in Rice and Asplund”.

The rules in Rice and Asplund applies whether the earlier Orders were made by consent of the parties or after a contested hearing before the Court.

The principle underpinning the rule in Rice and Asplund is that there should be an end to litigation; that is the avoidance of endless litigation between parents examining again and again the same issues and arrangements.

However, there are instances where it is

necessary for a Court to revisit earlier Orders. While there is no exhaustive list of what constitutes a changed circumstance in previous cases, this has included psychological and physical changes in the child, evidence of violence towards the child, a parent’s recovery from former mental health issues, a proposed relocation by one parent and a parents new stable relationship or marriage.

Should one parent bring an application to revisit earlier Orders and a Court be satisfied that there is a changed circumstance, then the matter is considered again by the Court and new Orders may be made.

Woman dies following crash – Tea Gardens

AN investigation is underway after a woman died in a two-vehicle crash in Tea Gardens on Monday.

Just before 11.30am on Monday 4 October 2021, emergency services were called to Pindimar Road near Myall Way, Tea Gardens, after reports a Subaru Forrester and a Nissan Dualis had collided.

Police have been told a woman stopped her Nissan Dualis on the shoulder of Pindimar Road, when it was struck by a Subaru Forrester.

Emergency services attended; however, the 64-year-old woman died at the scene.

The Subaru driver, a 46-year-old man, was freed after being trapped and airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District established a crime scene which has been examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing, anyone who may have dashcam footage or CCTV is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Within hours, the brigade tended to a grass fire in Nerong that was swiftly put out by the efforts of both the NAC and Bulahdelah brigades.

Vehicle Fire Just before 4:30am on 28 September the local fire brigade was called to the scene of a vehicular fire in North Arm Cove.

The vehicle had no occupants and was put out within the hour by the North Arm Cove Brigade.

Pacific Highway A B-Double crashed just before midnight on 27 September on the Pacific Highway Karuah.

North bound lanes were completely blocked whilst contraflow was established, affecting traffic in both directions into midday 28 September.

Bush Fire Safety As of 1 October, the Bush Fire Danger Period is officially in action in the Lower Hunter area.

Permits will be required by all landholders who wish to burn on their property and can be obtained by NSW Rural Fire Service Brigade Permit issuing officers in your area.

NSW RFS Commissioner, Rob Rogers reminds residents to understand the high level of fire danger in the area.

“As we enter the warmer months the land will begin to dry out and may prove problematic for both landholders and firefighters.

“Now is the time to review your plans, prepare your properties and have the conversation with your family about what you will do during a fire – talk about when you’ll leave, where you’ll go, what you’ll take and what you’ll do with animals,” Commissioner Rogers said.

National Police Remembrance Day This week, Police across Australia conducted discrete ceremonies to recognise National Police Remembrance Day 2021, an event to honour those that have given the ultimate sacrifice while performing their duties.

Officers from the Manning-Great Lakes Police District paid their respect to fallen officers “Today we remember those police officers who’ve paid the ultimate price while serving their community.

The names of 275 officers are etched into the stone of the New South Wales Police Wall of remembrance and whilst it’s not possible to come together today, the police family everywhere pauses for those heroes.

“It is our duty to make sure they are never forgotten,” Superintendent Chris Schilt said.

Tick season

AS the weather warms up, it’s essential to ensure that your furry friends are protected against ticks.

Tick Paralysis is a severe and potentially fatal condition that requires immediate veterinary action, however, it is one of the most preventable diseases in dogs and cats.

Known scientifically as Ixodes holocyclus, the paralysis tick causes ascending flaccid paralysis in dogs and cats, leading to

summer when the female ticks are most active and can travel in mulch, on clothing and in cars from the coast to inland regions.

“They can then go on to infect dogs, so just because your dog didn’t go to the coast doesn't mean it can’t get a paralysis tick,” Dr Roser said.

Symptoms include lethargy, lack of power in the back legs and inability to jump, vomiting and/or a strange cough.

“Although the tick may already have dropped off,

an inability to walk, inability to swallow and protect the airways, eventual respiratory paralysis and then death.

Paralysis ticks can also have a direct effect on the heart, causing heart failure and without treatment, susceptible dogs will die.

Hunter urged to ‘Get Ready’ for storm season THE Hunter has been impacted by severe weather and flooding before, and it will again – this is the message in the latest ‘Get Ready’ campaign, which NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) has launched this week in our region.

The community is being

urged to take practical steps to prepare their properties, with forecasts showing possible severe weather conditions this storm season, elevating the risk for widespread storms and possible flooding this summer.

“The SES campaign in our region is a timely reminder that we all need to take the time now to prepare ourselves, our homes and our region for

He and his wife Leonie retired to Tea Gardens in 2013 and they quickly became very active in community life, especially the local Baptist Church and the Myall U3A. Ray has always liked to write, but after joining Myall U3A, Ray found the opportunity to produce both

EACH month (when Covid-19 restrictions allow for meetings) the Myall U3A Photography Group selects a photograph to be featured in News Of The Area.

“On a recent walk along a Hawks Nest track I was able to capture many images of the wild flowers and was (pleasantly) surprised when I came upon an

ants nest - under my feet,” Dawn said.

“Ants were going about their morning chores like fury but this little guy was none too pleased with my intrusion.

“I had not realised until later, on viewing the image I had also captured his shadow which made him seem angrier and larger than first thought.

“We do not always see what we think we see until we take a closer look."

Easing of restrictions means it's ‘business as usual’ again for the U3A Photography Group.

The Group meets on the second and fourth Thursday each month at the Hawks Nest (main) Community Hall.

Current NSW Health guidelines apply at all meetings as do Myall U3A specific requirements for members.

New members are always welcome.

Ageism Awareness Day

By Marian SAMPSON AUSTRALIA celebrated its first Ageism Awareness Day on October 1.

NSW Seniors were in the spotlight, with loved ones being urged to check in on our older relatives and friends.

This was Australia’s first

Ageism Awareness Day and coincided with the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons and Probus Day. Minister for Seniors Natalie Ward said the day was an important opportunity to reinforce the value of older people to NSW, challenge stigma and

highlight the many support services available.

“We’re fortunate to have such wisdom and support from our thriving seniors here in NSW,” Mrs Ward said.

“A lifetime of effort justly deserves recognition as they continue to make valuable contributions to families and our communities.”

A number of members gave chase with little chance of catching it but Judy Binnie tracked it on the sandy path and recovered the bag on the ground some distance away with much relief, the bag complete with money purse and cards but unfortunately well chewed.

Action has now been taken to avoid a repeat occurrence.

“We can normally see the dingoes around and not worry but it was a surprise to see it with a bag in it's mouth.

“Due to Covid there is no food in the shed and none in the handbag which I suppose is surprising that the dog

would take it.”

The members of the Myall Park Croquet Club are not city slickers and took the event well in their stride and even found it a bit of an adventure.

“Dingoes and many other animals are frequent visitors to the courts and we usually enjoy their company,” he said.

The members of the Club are keenly aware that they are in the dingos space.

They are firm in the belief that they are more than entitled to roam the area and we should not put temptation in their way.

“After all is said we are the problem,” he said.

Older people are encouraged to utilise online activities and embrace the 7,500 NSW Seniors Card deals and discount providers and develop their online skills through Tech Savvy Seniors.

“Social isolation can be a major issue for our ageing population and it’s been especially tough for our seniors during the pandemic,” Mrs Ward said.

“We all know a senior,

whether they are a family member, friend, neighbour or colleague.

“I encourage everyone to pick up the phone and check in on them, not just today, but regularly.”

October 1 marked the second annual Probus Day with clubs dedicated to friendship, fellowship and fun in retirement holding COVID-safe initiatives throughout the month.

“Probus Day is a chance

to remind our members and the wider community about the importance of social connections and the support we offer to overcome feelings of isolation,” Probus South Pacific chairman Judith Maestracci said.

“Our members are enthusiastically springing into action by encouraging their friends to engage with their local Probus club and enjoy some much-needed COVID-safe fun.”

Daring dingo snatches Local Jobs Facilitator bag at Croquet Club Appointed

By Marian SAMPSON MEMBERS of the Myall Park Croquet Club are used to wildlife dropping by when they are out on the courts.

However they were a bit surprised by a visit from a local dingo recently.

Tony Jones told News Of The Area, “While all members were on the lawns discussing their strategies before taking the turn, one person saw a dingo entering our shed and shouted out to warn us.

“It was a big one who decided to steal our secretary’s handbag from the table and ran off into the bush.”

John Barilaro Resigns FOLLOWING Friday’s announcement that NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian would resign from the office of Premier and as a member of Parliament; Deputy Premier John Barilaro has followed suit, announcing his resignation on Monday morning.

Safety checks key this boating season BOATERS are being urged to check their vessels and safety equipment before heading out on the water this month, because many have been sitting idle during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said the October long weekend is the official launch of the Boating Season, with Transport for NSW expecting this to be our biggest season ever.

“Whether you’re fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding or water skiing this long weekend, please make sure you follow the rules to

ensure a day out on the water doesn’t end in tragedy,” Mr Constance said.

“We’ve seen an increase in the number of people applying for new boating licenses over the last year, so if you’re thinking of buying a second hand boat be sure to check it over properly.

“Lifejackets are the most important safety equipment on any recreational vessel.

“In NSW you must service inflatable lifejackets once a year or in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Remember to check them every time before you get on the water.”

In areas subject to stayat-home orders, including Greater Sydney and some regional areas, rules relating to outdoor gatherings apply for boating activities.

There were 17 boating related fatalities on NSW waterways in the year to 30 June 2021. 131 lives have been lost during recreational boating incidents over the 10 years to June 2020.

Tragically, 79 of those lives might have been saved had all people presumed drowned been wearing a life jacket.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos said with around two thirds of all calls to Marine Rescue relating to problems with engines, batteries and fuel,

25 regions across the country and was officially extended to all 51 Employment Regions for a further five years to June 2025, specifically created to assist regions to recover from COVID-19, focusing on improving employment outcomes.

Examples of the program's work include training and re-skilling opportunities; tailored non-accredited training; professional development; job seeker mentoring; work experience; employment pathway and internship programs.

New public health advice for NSW reopening

On day 12, you should get tested again. If a negative result is received, you can end isolation after day 14.

The Service NSW QR code check-in system will remain in place in the general community.

This system will be used to notify people who were in the same venue as a positive case.

People will be asked to monitor for symptoms and get tested if they become unwell.

Other settings, including schools, workplaces and high-risk settings, such as healthcare and aged care, will have specific risk assessment approaches.

People aged 16 years and over will only be allowed entry into some venues or settings if fully vaccinated, along with people with exemptions.

In some venues, children

COVID-19 has rocked businesses and hit the retail, tourism and hospitality industries hard.

Now there is an end in sight to the lockdown.

New public health advice sets out how NSW will continue to tackle COVID-19 as the state begins to reopen when it reaches the 70 percent double dose vaccination target.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said while high vaccination rates were the key factor in the roadmap to recovery, COVID-19 will continue to circulate in the community.

“NSW is leading the nation in so many ways with its pandemic response but particularly in its vaccination efforts.

“Vaccination will

provide greater freedoms as our society opens up and it reduces the risk of you spreading the virus to someone vulnerable, which could cost them their life.

“Despite the ongoing challenges that will continue to be posed by COVID-19, we have the opportunity to lead the world which is why it is vital everyone is vaccinated and follows the updated public health advice that will be in place from 11 October.”

From 11 October community members will still be asked to get tested if we develop symptoms and self isolate until we return a negative result regardless of our vaccination status.

Anyone may also be assessed as being a close contact following a risk assessment, including at workplaces, high-risk settings, such as healthcare

and aged care, and other specific settings such as schools and child care centres, or where an outbreak has been identified.

If you are a close contact of a positive case and vaccinated, you must get tested and self-isolate for seven days.

On day six after exposure, you must get tested again.

If a negative result is received and you are well, you can end isolation after day seven.

For the following seven days you must work from home where practicable, not attend hospitality settings, and not attend high-risk settings even if it is your place of work.

If you are a close contact of a positive case and not vaccinated you must get tested and immediately selfisolate for 14 days.

“We’d like to get a picture of how many MidCoast households have a Get Ready for bushfire plan in place, and which parts of the region are well prepared for bushfire this year,” said Mayor David West.

Ageism rife in Australia NEARLY half of all Australians over-50 experienced ageism in the past year, but only one in five of them took any action in response, according to new research launched to mark the first Ageism Awareness Day. Australia's campaign to end ageism, EveryAGE Counts, commissioned a nationwide poll by The RedBridge Group, to help understand the gap between the widespread prevalence of ageism and our collective willingness to combat it. Research findings showed that 45 percent of Australians over 50 say they have experienced ageism in the past year, and 52 per cent of all Australians say they have witnessed ageism in the past year.

Worryingly, 82 percent of older Australians who experienced ageism say they

did not take any action in response.

Of these 27 percent said it was because it was hard to prove, 24 percent said it was because they didn't know how to respond, 22 percent said was because they were not sure if it was really ageism and 9 percent said they "didn't know what my options were".

EveryAGE Counts is today looking to raise awareness that although knowing how to respond to ageism can be tricky, there are a range of constructive actions people can take, including setting up affinity groups at work, escalating complaints strategically, and understanding how to approach conversations that make a difference.

"Like all forms of discrimination, the place to start is by spreading awareness.

“So much ageism happens unconsciously, and it's allowed to keep happening because we don't feel sufficiently informed or empowered to push back.

EveryAGE Counts cochair and former federal Minister Robert Tickner said Ageism Awareness Day was an important initiative and it was very pleasing to see so many individuals and organisations around the country having conversations about ageism and its impacts.

"The proportion of the Australian population over 65 has doubled from 8 percent to 15 percent over the past 50 years. “We can’t keep discriminating against a fifth of our population.

“We need to update our attitudes, structures, and practices.

"Of course, the responsibility to act lies not just with those who experience ageism, but with everyone else.

“Discrimination and prejudice survive when we turn a blind eye or allow it to go unchallenged."

Gladys Berejiklian resigns as Premier, ICAC investigates

LOVE her or hate her, Gladys Berejiklian was always there for NSW. As NSW Premier, she guided the state through bushfires, floods, drought and the ongoing COVID-19

Tuning in to her 11am media conferences became part of a morning ritual for many, especially for those who are in lockdown.

On Friday 1 October, Ms Berejiklian handed in her resignation as Premier of

NSW and from parliament altogether.

While a shock to many, the signs were apparent, with Ms Berejiklian stepping away from her usual daily media conferences and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC)

ON Tuesday 28 September, Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club members took part in the Semi Final of the Club Championship Triples and social bowls.

Format for social bowls was a game of Fours and a game of Triples.

It was great to see Wendy Jones back bowling with us.

Jan Coomer was playing “swinger lead” in the Fours.

Jan, Sheila Rattray, Wendy Brand and Bette Saillard made a great comeback in this game bowling against Jan, Dorothy Thompson, Wendy Jones and Ingrid Luck.

The score 8 all on the 8th end but from here on Sandra’s team took control claiming victory on the 18th end 20 v 11.

The winners on the day winning with the lowest margin were Jan, Sheril, Wendy and Bette.

In the Triples Semi Final,

there was an interesting finish in the match between Dawn May, Dawn Jones and Judy McGavock v Pam Gilchrist, Jean Glover and Jeanette Emmett.

On the 16th end with just 2 ends left to bowl Judy’s team looked to be “home and hosed” ahead by 9 shots 17 v 8.

But as everyone knows anything can happen in a game of bowls and it nearly did.

Jeanette’s team won the last 2 ends and added 7 points to their tally just losing by 2 shots, 17 v 15.

It was a close game till the 8th end when Lynda Richards, Karen McPhie and Robyn Beaumont took on Sheila

investigating her for alleged corruption, conflict of interest and her former relationship with MP Daryl Maguire.

This was a tight game in the beginning on the 9th end Judy’s team in front by 1 shot

The next 3 ends resulted in their team gaining 7 shots now holding a big lead 15 v 7.

By the 14th end this lead had been reduced to 3 shots 15 v 12, 4 ends left to bowl still a chance of victory for either team. Dawn, Dawn and Judy rose to the occasion bowled magnificently as they had done through the entire game won 3 of the last 4 ends winning the Championship 21 v 13.

This is the first Club Championship that these 3 ladies have won, and probably will not be their last.

Congratulations to both teams on reaching the Final of this event.

Council is very concerned that the delay in implementing the court orders continues to pose a threat to water quality and health of the adjacent Port Stephens estuary and marine park.

Fame Cove media statement THERE has been metropolitan media interest in the ATO’s actions against developer Phillip Lee and his company Tea Garden Farms.

MidCoast Council is disappointed that the program of restoration works on the Tea Gardens Farms property at Fame Cove will not be proceeding as planned.

Since being notified of the ATO’s freezing orders, Council’s representatives have engaged with Tea Gardens Farms’ appointed legal representatives to have funds secured to have the temporary erosion and sedimentation controls on the site maintained and the hard hooved animals removed from the site as planned.

The Fame Cove site has ecological value and while the freezing orders result in a further delay in the restoration of the site, MidCoast Council is committed to securing the restoration of the site when the landowners have financial capacity to fund the significant

ON Friday 24 September Council’s Tea Gardens Customer Service Point sustained considerable damage as a result of vandalism.

Damage was isolated to the main office spaces with front windows and doors smashed, holes in walls, several computers and all monitors in the office damaged.

A new photocopier was also damaged beyond repair and will require replacement and the office area was generally turned upside down.

Carpets have been removed as petrol had been poured throughout and saturated through to the particle boards beneath resulting in the office being unusable due to not only the damage sustained, but also the fumes from the fuel. A MidCoast Assist car that was parked out front at the time also had its window smashed.

The offender has been apprehended by Police and this matter is now in their hands.

While there was considerable damage sustained, at this point estimated to be over $50,000, the main customer service area is now usable again, however works are still required to replace carpets and repair and paint damaged walls.

It is expected that we will be fully operational next week, when this is confirmed we will communicate the reopening to the community.

Unsupervised Swimming pools THE Public Health orders have allowed our unsupervised swimming pools to fall through the cracks.

When the decision to open pools was made the Covid restrictions on unsupervised pools were horrendous as they were treated as if they were aquatic centres.

MidCoast has five unsupervised pools in the shire which is probably the most of any shire in NSW. They are Bulahdelah, Stroud, Krambach, Nabiac and Tea Gardens (which will be fully supervised from December 1). It does not include Tuncurry which is closed as it is being refurbished as a water park.

Cr Hutchinson in particular has been championing the cause of having these pools open to the public.

The Hon. Catherine Cusack MLC, a member of parliament who has responsibility for the North Coast, in response to councillor and public concerns, said, “I became aware that it was closed last year due to the Council’s inability to fund a Covid-safe plan.

“And to be honest I found the entire situation ludicrous (no reflection on Council just that this was such an unacceptable policy outcome).

“I hoped naively it was a one-off but it’s very clear policies to mitigate Covid are going to be with us for a long time. “And what occurred last year as a crisis measure is going to be our future unless steps are taken for a common-sense solution.

“If there is a problem I need to understand where, and why so it can be fixed in time for the pools to open this summer.

“I am not criticising anyone for the pool closures - I can see what’s causing it but equally I have to say it is totally unacceptable and must be rectified urgently.”

To me there is a simple solution, small rural unsupervised pools should be treated as parks, playgrounds and river baths.

Change rooms may need to be closed so that it becomes swim and go rather than swim and sunbake.

However, for this to happen the Health Orders need to be changed.

It is not something Council can do.

Cr Hutchinson and I shall keep on lobbying our state members for a commonsense solution now and for the future.

A pool, like a village hall, is often the only piece of infrastructure that helps these smaller communities survive.

I LOVE the street library concept.

It offers all the best parts of borrowing a book (flicking through titles, locating a classic, the anticipation of lazy Sunday afternoons draped on a chaise with a cat, a cup of tea, and some dog-eared pages ... and all of it without the cost of a new book, the fines of a library and the philanthropic joy of giving and receiving during a stroll in your neighbourhood.

Now, to your question.

For a start, literary merit doesn't always equate to a best seller.

Take this line for example: 'His voice is warm and husky like dark melted chocolate fudge caramel... or something."

Dark melted chocolate fudge caramel?

Or something? If a 10-year-old wrote this in their written expression book, they'd be pulled up for starting the sentence in a verbose manner and finishing it by being lazy or unimaginative, and yet this book topped best-seller lists with its combination of cringey writing and a stalking, manipulative protagonist.

I understand where you're coming from, though.

Is it okay, for example, to swap a pristine copy of Wuthering Heights for a muddy version of Bombproof Your Horse, admittedly an interesting read, but with a very limited prospective audience, or Knitting With Dog Hair: Better a sweater from a dog you know and love than from a sheep you'll never meet (both real titles, by the way).

I feel that in the same vein as 'an eye for an eye', you really should swap a decent book for a decent book, particularly when this free community service has a significant feel-good factor about it.

Dr Chris Brown, who had viewers giddy thanks to his charm and handsomeness on Bondi Vet, chronicles the journeys of the animals and would-be companions as the series’ narrator, ensuring the attention is on the fourlegged friends and not on his charming smile.

Carp in the crosshairs

Mr Marshall said a successful trial of bowfishing for carp had previously shown it could be safe, effective, and provide economic benefits for rural and regional areas of NSW. “The Trial Program in 2016 and 2017 and its subsequent review identified that, with the right regulation, bowfishing is a safe and sustainable technique,” Mr Marshall said.

“This is in addition to the huge environmental benefits that come from removing pest carp from inland waters.

“It is important bowfishers understand the rules, regulations and

technique surrounding the sport before taking up bowfishing.”

To assist with education and awareness of rules and regulations, a NSW Recreational Bowfishing for Carp in Inland Waters Guide is available via the NSW DPI website at https://www.dpi. nsw.gov.au/hunting/gameand-pests/bowfishing-forcarp.

Bowfishing is prohibited in tidal waters, entrances to rivers and lakes, coastal lagoons, all offshore waters and estuaries and all beaches across the state.

So, we will not be seeing anyone bowfishing off the local breakwall or jetty anytime soon, but it is a growing sport that now has the green light to take on an environmental pest in inland waters.

It is also prohibited in declared trout waters to ensure separation between trout anglers and bowfishers.

A valid NSW Recreational Fishing License is also required to Bowfish.

For safety as part of the changes, bowfishing cannot be conducted within 50 metres of a person, or

BOWFISHING is a growing sport that has recently put carp firmly in the crosshairs.

NSW bowfishers can now safely fish with specialised equipment in specific inland NSW waters while also helping control pest populations.

New rules and regulations for the sport were announced

by Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall following extensive industry and community consultation.

“Carp are considered a noxious pest and remain the only species that may be taken using bowfishing equipment,” Mr Marshall said.

“This is a popular activity, and bowfishers will now be allowed to target carp using an upright bow with a specialised arrow attached through a tethered line and a reel.
