Exotic plant escapees on the loose in Hawks Nest EXOTIC plants that escape from people’s gardens continue to cause huge problems in the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area.

Typical of these invasive species is the agave americana, a species native in the Americas that can be bought from nurseries in Australia as decorative garden plants.

They are tough plants and easy to grow.

The agave has thick, sap-filled leaves whose edges are lined with sharp, needle-like spikes dangerous to humans and native creatures.

They are especially hard to eradicate, as some twenty volunteers of the Hawks Nest and Tea

Wearing safety glasses, overalls, boots and thick gloves, they battled for two hours to remove dozens of agave plants and load them into two utes to be safely disposed of at the council tip.

Some of the plants were so deeply rooted the volunteers needed ropes tied to their 4WDs to drag them out, careful not to get injured by the spikes.

Agave sap can cause contact dermatitis.

65 percent of weeds invading bushland were from urban gardens.

Once established these weeds are difficult and expensive to control.

Already here are succulents, assorted daisies, orchids, bitou bush, mother-ofmillions, morning glory, polygala, E. cassia and asparagus fern which are all found on the dunes along The Boulevarde.

Plant expert Sharon Taylor, who is one of the Bitou Busters’ organisers, advised, “Keep garden plants in the garden and out of the bush.

“Dispose of garden waste in council green bins.

“If you are a gardener and keen to beautify this area, you could join Bitou Busters and learn about bush regeneration.”

Dumping in bushland and reserves is illegal and can attract on-the-spot fines of up to $5,000.

Pontin, said she looks forward to leading the Council in linking priorities to those of the community articulated in the plan.

“This is an important document not just for us at MidCoast Council, but for the whole of our community.

“It captures the ideas,

priorities and values of our community and it tells a story of what is important to us and the future we want for our region,” Mayor Pontin said.

The updated plan reflects all that the area has been through since 2018 when the original Plan was developed.

“We are a region that is diverse, in our geography, the character of our towns and

villages, and our people, and a region that has battled our fair share of adversity over the last few years.

“Since the development of the original Community Strategic Plan we have experienced drought, record breaking bushfires and floods, and a COVID-19 pandemic.

“Through all of this, the MidCoast community has demonstrated a great sense of community connectedness, capacity and resilience,”

Mayor Pontin said.

The updated plan reflects four key community outcomes: a resilient and socially connected community, an integrated and considered approach to managing our natural and built environments, a thriving and strong economy and strong leadership and good governance.

Mayor Pontin says that additional community consultation will be sought

out during 2023-24.

“We will be having a longer, more detailed conversation with our community to develop a new longer-term Community Strategic Plan for the MidCoast.

“During that conversation, our aim will be to ensure our next Community Strategic Plan is even more reflective of our community’s needs, aims and aspirations,” Mayor Pontin said.

The Community Strategic

Plan will be used as a plan for the whole community and Mayor Pontin said Council recognises that there are so many agencies, groups and individuals who contribute to supporting, developing and shaping our future.

“As a Council we look to this Plan as a guide for where we should direct our energies and efforts to support the needs of our community,” she said.

Councillors within the first twelve months of a new Council.

“The aim of the Councillor Expenses and Facilities Policy is to enable the reasonable and appropriate reimbursement of expenses and provision of facilities to Councillors to help them undertake their civic duties.

“It ensures accountability and transparency, and seeks to align Councillor expenses and facilities with community expectations,” MidCoast Council’s Governance Manager Rob Griffiths said.

Notable expenses that all Councillors receive include a $44,000 remuneration for

Professional Development per year, $250 per month for Information and Communications Technology expenses, a $6,000 Information and Communications Technology equipment fund upon election, $30 per hour for carer expenses to a maximum of $2,500 and home office expenses to a

maximum of $300 per year.

The Mayor of MidCoast will also receive a Council vehicle and fuel card and a reserved parking space at Council offices.

Additional expenses included general travel expenses on Council business and accommodation and meals are set in accordance with

the Local Government Award kilometre rate and the NSW Crown Employees Reviewed Award.

The Policy was adopted unanimously by Councillors and is now being placed on public exhibition for a period of 28 days allowing for public submissions and comments.

Stephens are no longer bulk billing, with many now also charging pensioners.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Wahsington told News Of The Area, “The pressure on our local GPs is being exacerbated by our under-resourced local hospital.

THE results of the Australian 2021 Census are in.

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest had a population of 5,804 while BulahdelahStroud had a population of 5235 on Census night.

Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest had 1,828 families, with 4,043 private dwellings, while Bulahdelah and Stroud had 1,418 families and 2,516 private dwellings.

Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing Competition Postponed

By Marian SAMPSON STROUD’S famous and long running Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing Competition, due to return to the region this weekend, has been postponed until Saturday 20 August.

This year the event will also see an amazing display of classic Ford cars at Stroud Showground, Cowper Street, Stroud.

Karen Hutchinson, President, Stroud Brick and Rolling Pin Competition, told News Of The Area, “This unique event attracts visitors to our region which then of course adds tourism dollar spend, which contributes to economic development.”

Waste Management Strategy 2030

By Tara CAMPBELL AN updated Waste Management Strategy for MidCoast Council will be placed on public exhibition for community comment.

Following the recent Council meeting on 29 June 2022, an updated strategy in line with the proposed legislative and regulatory changes within the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041 was voted to be placed on public exhibition.

In 2021, the NSW Government released the new Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041 which sets targets for a 50 per cent reduction in organic waste sent to landfill and a ten percent reduction in waste generated per person by 2030.

“The 2041 Strategy also highlights key policy changes that will be implemented to phase out problematic and unnecessary plastics and reaffirms the commitment to net zero emissions from organic waste by 2030,”

DEAR Jasminda, DUE to my intense interest in the outcome of last year's election result, and to show some solidarity, I signed up to help out.

It was quite an intense process involving an application, referees and training.

On my first (and only) day, the organisers said I wasn't required.

Sometime later I received a $500 payment for the day I didn't work. I'm now feeling guilty, but I also don't want to waste more hours trying to work out how to give the money back.

It was hard enough jumping the hoops to register.

Progress Association Update

HELLO, we have had a busy two months since my last Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA) update and we lost some time due to COVID bouts so please take care.

It was great to hear from other local service groups at the last General Meeting held Monday 20 June 2022 at the Hawks Nest Community Hall.

Updates were shared from the Myall Koala and Environment Group; Pindimar and Bundabah Community Association; Tea Gardens Family Research and Local History Inc; Myall Coast Radio; Myall U3A; Hawks Nest Development Page; North Arm Cove Progress Association; Meals On Wheels; Myall River Action Group; and our Lions Club.

Information sharing will remain a standing agenda item so we can identify opportunities to consult and support each other on future initiatives.

The HNTGPA was also represented at the Tea Gardens Public School Student Parliament showcasing local young leadership; we have great young people and teachers in our community.

Committee representatives also attended a comprehensive Sheargold Community consultation session about the proposed Parry’s Cove Marina which is in its early stages so we will continue to monitor this and other developments and share progress and risks.

We also attended the opening of the fantastic Galleries in Gardens Winter Warmer Exhibit, ‘Movement’, running until Monday 27 June; please take time to support our local

artists.

Around our villages, MidCoast Council staff have been busy grading public car parks in Hawks Nest, painting shelters and picnic tables, and noticeably improving maintenance works.

Work is also progressing at the Tea Gardens Pool with the pool leak repaired and construction of the disabled access ramp underway.

I have also written to the Council for regular updates on a number of projects including the Peter Sinclair linking footpath, Hawks Nest Community Hall renovation, Water Tower - Lions Park murals, and Tea Gardens Pontoon projects.

I have been assured by Council that they are all progressing with Council project webpages to be established to share updates.

We have also sent a letter with photos about the rundown state of the Myall Quays Shopping Centre (Coles) including outlining

MIDCOAST Council has endorsed a rate rise for the Local Government Area.

We also submitted a Building Better Communities Grant for approximately $120,000 to improve the skate park (pictured).

THE ladies found the course very heavy going again on Wednesday 29 June and the winner of the Stableford event was B.Newton with 31pts from M.Reinhard with 29pts (a great result

after returning from months away).

The $26 Jackpot was grabbed by B.Gordon with a great shot on the 17th.

Only 14 Vets endured the mud on Thursday 30 June and M.South was the winner with a terrific round scoring

43pts. K.Hughes was 2nd with 34pts from G.Willadsen with 32pts.

NTPs were G.Leahy and M.South.

The course was too wet for golf on Saturday 2 July , but the AGM went ahead and a new Board was appointed.

Boathouse Resort Hawks Nest Cup

THE Boathouse Resort Hawks Nest Cup, held at Hawks Nest Golf Club on Saturday 25 June was won by local Club Champion Warwick Jones.

A field of 146 players from Clubs as far afield as Sydney,

the Central Coast, and Foster Tuncurry competed for the Hawks Nest Cup, a highlight event for the club, which is also an Order of Merit Event for the Newcastle District Golf Association.

The weather was great and the course was perfectly

been coming in all weekend long, with severe weather hitting the region.

NSW SES Stroud Unit reported flooding at the Crawford River Road causeway at Booral Road and Branch Lane was entirely underwater.

The Unit reminded all residents that if it’s flooded, forget it.

You should never drive through floodwater.

Even if you’ve driven a road hundreds of times before, it doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Flood waters are capable of damaging structure and whilst water is over the road, it is impossible to see the damage.

Marine Drive Mural Port Stephens Hunter Police are seeking any information in relation to the damage

that was caused to the Anzac mural in Anzac Park, Marine Drive, Tea Gardens.

Between Monday 20 June and Saturday 25 June 2022 an unknown person/s damaged two panels of the mural in the park.

THERE is always something happening at the Myall Park Croquet Club.

In May the Myall Park Croquet Club hosted a Cuppa for Cancer morning tea which was organised by Ella Sansom, Fran Henderson, Sharon Barwick and Kay Web. Working as a team the ladies managed to raise much needed funds for the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).

Through hard work and some generous donations from club members, Ella and the team raised well over $1000 for this charity, an effort acknowledged with a certificate from HRMI. The club also has received a grant of $5000 to assist with the purchase of much needed

new lawn mower.

Tony Jones told News Of The Area, “This comes from our application to the Office of Sport, Local Sport Program 2021-2022.

“The Hon. Stuart Ayres MP advised us of our successful application.

“We wish to thank Neil Davy of Myall Engineering for the great new aluminium seats he has provided to replace very old timber ones around the courts.”

Congratulations also go to Mahlah Murphy, the club champion for April and May. New members are most welcome to come and try the game with some lessons on Thursday mornings at 9.30am.

FURTHER to last week’s report on Robyn Beaumont competing at the NSW Champion of Club Champion Singles. On Monday 27 June, Robyn defeated Chris Gordon (Harbord) 25 v 23, thus becoming her sectional winner, with the State Competition now down to just 32 bowlers.

The next morning Robyn had another win against Jung Sook Crisp (Engadine) 25 v 19.

The field was down to just 16 bowlers now, to make the Quarter Finals Robyn needed to defeat Michelle Treadwell (Halekulani).

The match started close, 7 all after 10 ends, 13 all on the 16th end.

Michelle won the next 6 ends and grabbed a lead of 9 shots, 24 v 13.

Robyn was not ready to end her campaign, she fought back winning the next 5 ends and

equalising the score 24 all. By now nature had entered the game with wind gusts over 30 knots making bowling very difficult.

Unfortunately, Robyn’s last bowl was pushed through the head and she went down 25 v 24.

Robyn related to me her disappointment in not making the final 8 but was pleased with making it a round further than she achieved the previous year.

Notification of project proposal and registration of interest under Heritage NSW Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010 (Stage 1) – Proposed Tea Gardens Rising Main – Stages 1 and 2

McCardle Cultural Heritage (MCH) have been engaged by Accuplan on behalf of Mid Coast Council (Myall Street, Tea Gardens, NSW 2324) to prepare an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA) and Section 90 Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) application, if required, for the proposed Tea Gardens Rising Main – Stages 1 and 2, located at Tea Gardens as follows: • Reconfigure the existing sewerage network in order to reduce loading on the existing gravity system and SPS TG 01.

• Connect new rising main to SPS TG-01 with alignment to follow Myall Street eastwards to the western side of the Singing Bridge and underbore to locate pipeline on the south western bank of the Singing Bridge to connect to the Myall River underbore.

• Cross the Myall River through a HDD underbore located near the existing water main and bore to the south eastern bank of the Singing Bridge. The pipeline will then continue from the river underbore located at the eastern side of the Myall River, following the private property boundary to Eagle Avenue then following the Eagle Avenue Road reserve to the Ibis Avenue Road reserve. The pipeline will follow Ibis Avenue Road reserve to Albatross Avenue and travel along the road reserve parallel to Albatross Avenue to Mungo Brush Road. The new sewer rising main alignment will then follow the existing sewer rising main easement to the Hawks Nest STP. • Road crossings will be subject to HDD underbore for the Myall Street, Kingfisher Avenue, Albatross Avenue and Mungo Brush Road crossings.

• Ancillary work for the project may include, but are not limited, to tie-in works, landscaping, and earthworks. As well as the establishment of temporary ancillary compounds, stockpile sites and associated facilities.

• The proposal includes the remediation of works areas post construction to return to the same condition prior to construction works.

The purpose of community consultation with Aboriginal people is to assist the proposed applicant in the preparation of the AHIP application if required and to assist the Chief Executive of Heritage NSW, Department of Premier & Cabinet in his or her consideration and determination of the application should an AHIP be required.

In compliance with the Heritage NSW policy - Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010, MCH would like to extend an invitation to Aboriginal people who hold cultural knowledge relevant to the proposed project area and who can determine the significance of Aboriginal object(s) and/or place(s) in the area of the proposed project to register an interest in the consultation process for this project.

Written registrations must be forwarded to MCH (P.O. Box 166 Adamstown, NSW, 2289; penny@mcheritage.com.au no later than C.O.B. on 21 July 2022.

All registered parties will then be contacted to discuss the project in compliance with Heritage NSW policy. If you register your interest in this project, please also nominate your preferred option to receive the initial information. Chris Hoare Cup ON Wednesday, 22 June, 50 Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) students and five teachers travelled to Gloucester to compete in the annual Chris Hoare Cup. Due to weather and COVID it was the first time since 2019 that the event was held.

Students competed in touch football, soccer, U14 rugby league and opens rugby league.

“The day began with the girls’ soccer, touch football and the U14 boys rugby league all being held on different fields,” said BCS PDH teacher Ashlee Styles.

The girls’ soccer was a hotly contested match with neither side scoring until the last minute of the match.

“The girls defended like champions and took every attacking opportunity they had, all the while having no substitutions,” Ashlee said.

Cunningham, scored the winning goal in the dying minutes of the game to make the final score 1-0.”

The girls touch football side were defeated by Gloucester 11-5, with Lilly Carter and Daisy Wilton scoring one try each and Marli Mobbs scoring two.

“Marli was the player of the day, steering the side around the field and involved in all plays, scoring two of her own tries which was the highest by a player in the match.”

The under 14 boy’s rugby league side, who had never played a game together before, were also involved in a thrilling contest.

“We had eleven excited players take the field without any reserves,” said Ashlee.

Gloucester scored the first two tries, before BCS’s Ricky Nguyen crossed the line after a barnstorming run to make the score 8-4.

Gloucester scored again, quickly followed by a length of the field try scored by Toby Wilton.

“Toby was exceptional all game at guiding the boys around the field,” Ashlee said.

Going into halftime down 14-8, BCS hit back quickly after the restart, with Ricky Nguyen using power and strength to score his second try under the posts.

A Darcy Wilton conversion brought the score to 14-14, before Gloucester scored again in the last ten minutes of the game to make the final score 20-14.

“All boys should be immensely proud of their participation and performance!” Ashlee said.

The open boy’s rugby league was a strong and powerful match with plenty of hard-hitting from both sides.

“Much like the U14’s, our boys had never played a game as a team before.

“Tom Doyle was an exceptional leader on the field, guiding the boys around the park and making several

line breaks and some superb tackles. He also scored our two tries of the match.

“Tom McInerney was captivating at fullback, making several tackle busts and line breaks.

“The team all worked exceptionally well together,

putting their bodies on the line against a much bigger and more experienced side.

“Unfortunately, we were defeated with the final score of 36-8,” Ashlee said.
