In 2022, visitors will experience three days of family fun with an array of entertainment, arts, craft, food, traditional produce displays as well as cattle, horse and dog shows to enjoy.

The Stroud Show will have something for everyone, with popular exhibits returning to the 2022 Show line-up including the wife carrying contest, the Homebrew competition, the Ute Show as well as the biggest pumpkin contest!

Not to mention the demolition derby, fireworks and two sensational local country entertainers, Jane Denham and Newcastle’s Hurricane Fall.

And, little show goers will be kept just as happy with fun and exciting entertainment including a reptile petting show, kid’s shows and amusement rides.

In the Show ring, equine enthusiasts will not be

disappointed with over 700 stallions, colts, mares and fillies competing in their various disciplines of show jumping, hacking, equestrian and show ring.

A Show highlight will be show jumping of a six bar final, reserved for the best of the best.

And, the cattle will be beefed up with so much grass on the ground after record rainfalls.

While in the dog ring, the Show has literally gone to the dogs with the return of the Stroud All Breeds Championship Dog Show set to ‘stack’ hundreds of dogs from terriers, toys, gundogs to hounds and non-sporting breeds – all vying for Best In Show and judged by interstate conformation judges.

There will be the talented dogs showing their talents with cattle and of course the large, the small, the sleek and the fluffy dogs vying for a ribbon in the show ring.

Show President James Harris told News Of The Area, “This year we are not competing with the Royal Easter Show and many of the entrants will be attending our show on their way north after the Royal.

“We are really excited about the on site camping, and of course the three day event format, we had to make it three days to fit everything in.

“The Camp Draft has been moved to a separate event in May as this is now a huge event in its own right with 750-800 Camp Drafters.

“The 2022 Stroud Show demonstrates the true feel of what life in our little country town has to offer.

“I’m incredibly proud of our town and the volunteer committee that runs this event every year.

Seeking answers on Cedar Wharf Lodge

WITH the community of Bulahdelah devastated at the closure of the Anglican Care Cedar Wharf Lodge nursing home, they are still seeking answers.

The question as to what will happen to the nursing home, which the community fund raised to build, remains under a cloud.

Anglican Care bought the home from the local community for the princely sum of $1 with the community under the belief that their nursing home would be run professionally and well into the future.

Just a handful of years later Anglican Care has decided to close the facility.

As you can easily imagine, family law and mental health go hand-in-hand.

All relationships and families go through difficult times.

But if someone is experiencing depression, stress, substance abuse or any number of other mental health illnesses, it can bring about the end of a relationship. Domestic violence, financial problems and the effects of addiction are also frequently named as causes of relationship breakdown.

Even if mental health was not a factor in the breakdown of the relationship – dealing with the decision to end a relationship can itself cause stress, anxiety and depression.

There are a lot of organisations out there who offer services designed especially for families experiencing mental health issues. Both Interrelate Family

Centres and Relationships Australia offer a range of counselling and programs – including ones designed specifically for people who are separating, as well as counselling in relation to family violence and problem gambling. Other organisations such as Alcoholics Anonymous, the Financial Counselling Helpline and Newcastle Domestic Violence Resource Centre - offer issues specific assistance. In addition, there are counselling services such as Lifeline (lifeline.org. au) and the Kids Helpline available to help.

While the law has to keep adapting to ensure that it can best respond to each person – it has come a ways when it comes to mental health.

BOCSAR release crime statistics

In 2021, the rate of the following offences was at the lowest level since BOCSAR crime records commenced 27 years ago in 1995: murder, robbery, burglary, car theft, stealing offences and malicious damage to property.

Commenting on the findings, Jackie Fitzgerald, Executive Director at BOCSAR, said it was unsurprising that the huge social upheaval caused by the lockdowns had a flow on effect to criminal activity.

“What was unexpected is that the downward trend was so consistent across offences.

“For those offences that remained low in December 2021, it will be interesting to observe how long it takes for crime rates to return to pre-pandemic levels as NSW residents resume regular activities,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

Australian Local Government Association funding priorities

By Tara CAMPBELL MIDCOAST Council will support the national funding priorities of the Australian Local Government Association.

In a Mayoral Minute at the recent Council meeting on 23 March, the motion was raised for MidCoast Council to address the funding shortfall being faced by local governments in New

South Wales, particularly by rural and regional Councils.

“Australia Local Government Association, and Local Government NSW, have been campaigning for a more equitable share of government revenues for local governments and MidCoast Council have agreed to support and participate in the advocacy for these funding priorities,” Mayor Claire Pontin said.

By agreeing to participate the Council will write to all known election candidates in local Federal electorates and the President of the Australian Local Government Association to express support, identify priority local projects and programs that could be progressed with the additional financial assists from the Federal Government and seek

funding commitments from the members, candidates and their parties for these identified local projects and programs.

MidCoast Council has been impacted in recent years by bushfires, drought, flooding and the COVID pandemic.

“With an area of over 10,000 square kilometres comprising significant community infrastructure

and an extensive road network extending over 3600km servicing our diverse community, Federal Government support is vital to ensuring services are provided and enhanced,” Mayor Pontin said.

The Don’t Leave Local Communities Behind campaign will promote seventeen priority tasks in the portfolios of economic recovery, transport and community infrastructure, building resilience, circular economy and intergovernmental relations.

Support for MidCoast floodaffected communities FROM Friday 8 April, MidCoast locals affected by the recent storms and floods can obtain in-person advice and information by attending one of three Recovery Assistance Points.

The State Government has pledged $25 million in funding for essential trauma and recovery services to communities hardest hit by the recent flooding in NSW. Having been declared a disaster-impacted region,

MidCoast residents are eligible for the fast-tracked support.

The Recovery Assistance Points are staffed by disaster recovery experts who can guide you through the different types of support available.

There will be a focus on the main areas of local need – financial assistance for farmers and mental health support to the community.

Community make their voice heard in consultation process

The draft Strategy provides a framework for rural, environmental and waterway zones across the MidCoast and has been prepared as part of the strategic planning framework to inform preparation of a new MidCoast Local Environmental Plan.

The strategy was placed on an initial twelve-week exhibition period in which Council staff received over 600 individual phone calls and call-back appointments and 460 responses to email enquiries and requests for hard copy documents to be addressed.

A decision was then made to extend the exhibition by a further ten weeks due to the lifting of some public health orders.

MidCoast Council Senior Land Use Planner, Alex Macvean, said that over 120 in-person activities occurred including appointments in Bulahdelah, Pacific Palms,

Labor announce plans for Climate Action

ALEX Simpson, the Federal Labor candidate for the Lyne electorate and a renewable energy scientist, has outlined Labor’s energy policy and the job creation he believes will accompany it.

“Reports from the International Panel on Climate Change make it clear we must act now,” Mr Simpson said.

“Labor’s emissions targets meet the best possible outcomes outlined in that report, with power bills, massive job creation, and stronger local manufacturing set to power

“As serious as the climate problem is, never have we had as great an opportunity to solve it; scientists like those I’ve worked alongside have been working hard to improve our energy technologies, allowing us to reach for a low-emissions future,” Mr Simpson continued.

"We need a fit-for-purpose power grid.

“Once complete, Snowy 2.0 will have to wait for the power grid to be able to accommodate it.

“We also need to cater for people who can’t afford solar panels- their electricity bills continue to rise, forcing those who can afford less to pay more,” Mr Simpson said.

In line with the party’s state and national plans, Labor believes that there is a solution to both issues, investing $20 billion for an urgently needed upgrade to the national power grid, and $100 million for community solar power stations.

The plan commits a further $200 million to provide communities with local batteries, giving residents an opportunity to buy and sell energy among their community, and driving down electricity bills.

The proposed projects will create

600,000 jobs, with five out of six in regional NSW. Based on detailed modelling by Reputex, a leading company in the energy field, it is alleged that household power bills will be cut by $275 a year by 2025 under this plan.

“Lower electricity bills will be the fuel of our manufacturing sector and will drive Labor’s A Future Made in Australia plan, committed to bringing manufacturing home,” Mr Simpson said.

Climate Change has become a large point of contention in the past weeks, with the Federal Court of Australia ruling that the Australian Government does not owe children protection from the harm caused by climate change.

This ruling was made just weeks ago after Environment Minister Sussan Ley requested an appeal, which reversed a decision that legally recognised she had a duty of care.

Following a number of protests by school students in Australia in late March, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that his government had “taken the challenge of climate change seriously” and encouraged young people to take a keen interest in the issue.

“I encourage them, by all means, express your view, it’s a great democracy, and I have no issue with that,” he told reporters.

“We’ve committed to net zero by 2050 with a $21 billion plan, which is being rolled out now.

“It’s not enough for Australia just to reduce our emissions by 20 per cent, as we already have done.

“It’s not enough for Australia to achieve net zero by 2050.

“The whole world has to,” Mr Morrison said.

LOCAL NBN speeds are set to improve following the announcement of a $480 million Federal investment.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the upgrade would extend the coverage range from local NBN towers and allow higher speed services to everyone served by the towers.

“This means more people can be served

by NBN fixed wireless, it means higher speed services on the NBN fixed wireless network, and it means higher amounts of data can be used by households and business customers,” Dr Gillespie said.

“The upgrade will expand the fixed wireless footprint coverage by up to 50 percent, allowing additional premises to access fixed wireless services instead of Sky Muster satellite services.

“NBN Co will offer new higher speed services to all fixed wireless customers and higher speeds during the network’s busiest time, typically around 8:00 pm at night.

“Telecommunications matters for every community, including ours, and this is very much a welcome investment in our region’s future.

“Having access to reliable and high-speed internet can really make a difference for local businesses carrying out their operations, or families connecting with loved ones.

“With faster internet and more data available, these improved services will directly benefit premises already using NBN fixed wireless and satellite services, and particularly the approximately 23,000 households and businesses in this region with active fixed wireless services,” Dr Gillespie said.

Bulahdelah Blokes Class IN the town of Bulahdelah there is a weekly class run by local yoga teacher Justine Thompson, helping men of all ages to get a little more active.

The Bulahdelah Blokes class brings men onto a yoga mat, not a likely place for many men in the town.

The focus of the class is to lead students through a range of movements to help build strength and stretch.

Justine aims to encourage men to take a more active interest in their physical and mental health.

“In this more comfortable format, the blokes can gain a stronger awareness of their posture, and physical body in general,” Justine said.

“The work focuses on building strength, helping to ease tightness in muscles and improving balance.”

Justine has a sound knowledge of anatomy and teaches with a focus on alignment so that people learn to take care of themselves as they move.

Suggestions are provided so that people with various levels of fitness and mobility can participate.

“One of the older blokes who comes every week is Geoff,” Justine said.

“Geoff swears that the class is making a difference in his everyday movement and his confidence in what

The program depends on the 70 plus volunteers to help with cooking in the kitchen and delivering meals to the clients.

“There is true camaraderie amongst the volunteers as they enjoy serving the community,” said Meredyth Rae, Office Manager, Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Meals on Wheels.

Long serving volunteers were honoured with certificates of appreciation at the celebration.

“While there were awards for ten, fifteen and 20 years of service, a special mention of Jean Ryan who received a 30+ years of service recognition award,” said Meredyth.

The local impact of Rising Ocean Temperatures

AUSTRALIA’S reefs and marine ecosystems are at grave risk of mass bleachings and extinction, a marine heatwaves research briefing from the Climate Council has found.

Port Stephens is home to Australia’s southern most coral reef at Fly Point.

It isn’t just the Great Barrier Reef that is at risk due to rising sea temperatures.

The Climate Council briefing, ‘In hot water: Climate change, marine heatwaves and coral bleaching’ was released recently, as a UN reef monitoring delegation touched down to assess the condition of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Reef is currently being watched closely by scientists for another possible

mass bleaching event, with temperatures up to 3°C higher than average in central parts of the reef.

The briefing affirms that last year was the warmest year on record for the world’s oceans.

The excess heat absorbed by the ocean in 2021 was equivalent to the energy of seven Hiroshima atomic bombs detonating every second.

Near surface waters off south eastern Australia are warming at nearly four times the global average, leading to changes in the distribution of species, species collapse and a decline in biodiversity.

Climate Councillor, climate scientist and Distinguished Professor of Biology at Macquarie University, Lesley Hughes said, “Under a high emissions scenario, the Reef

could face bleaching every year as soon as 2044.

“This would effectively destroy the Reef and other shallow water reefs worldwide.

“The Great Barrier Reef is dangerously close to another mass bleaching event, which would make it an unprecedented and catastrophic fourth such event in six years.

“Unless we cut emissions deeply this decade the situation on the reef will only get worse.”

The briefing also reveals that heatwaves are having devastating impacts on Australia’s marine ecosystems including seagrass and kelp forests, and on industries including aquaculture, fisheries and tourism.

Port Stephens is home to large areas of seagrass which is a food source for turtles and other marine creatures.

The pair discovered Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest on one of their many trips north of Sydney while on annual holidays.

While their standard fare will be the presentation of high quality Australian meals, there will also be a range of Korean meals available on the menu.

Peter, who qualified as a Chef at Noah’s Hotel in Newcastle in the 1990’s, moved to Australia from South Korea some 40 years ago.

Upon completion of his apprenticeship Peter worked as a Chef at Centre Point Tower in Sydney followed by a stint at the Renaissance Hotel in the city.

He subsequently worked with high profile French chef Jean Pierre at Barnaby’s Waterfront Restaurant in Parramatta, which specialised in five star fine dining.

During this period Peter qualified as a ‘Four Hatted Chef’ (the highest level of Chef) and ultimately became the Executive Chef at Barnaby’s where he continued to work until 2012.

A highlight of Peter’s time at Barnaby’s was during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 when they hosted Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of US President Bill Clinton, and a large group of

Peter and Kay accepted this challenge and they conducted a very successful restaurant for the next seven years.

Following their time at Strathfield, Peter and Kay then took on the catering contract at the Springwood Country Club where they worked for the next few years.

Prior to moving to Australia from South Korea, some 30 years ago, Kay studied English and English Literature at university.

This led to an initial period of employment where Kay worked as an Australian/ Korean interpreter.

A highlight of Kay’s golfing career was in 2021 when she won a statewide competition, the NSW Women’s Bronze Bowl, held at New South Wales Golf Club.

Seniors Card goes digital

SENIORS living in the Myall Lakes region can now access their Seniors and Seniors Savers Card digitally via the Service NSW app for the first time since its introduction in 1992.

The rollout of the digital card follows a successful pilot with 4,000 participants, with the vast majority giving it the thumbs up.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government, Victor Dominello said that this will be an extension of the other Service NSW app programs which seniors have embraced over the past two years.

“Seniors have already embraced the Service App in ways including the Dine and Discover program, Digital Driver's Licence and QR code check-ins.

“This digital option provides them with greater choice and flexibility in a secure and convenient manner, meaning that there is one less thing for people to carry around,” Mr Dominello said.

This now brings this service, which has been beneficial for easing the cost of living for seniors since 1992, into the twentyfirst century.

When this initiative was first introduced by the then Premier of NSW, John Fahey, 250,000 seniors had access to discounts and rebates from 320 goods and service providers.

It is now one of the largest programs of its kind in Australia with 1.8 million seniors able to access discounts and rebates at over 6,500 shops, travel, entertainment and professional services.

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said the Seniors and Seniors Saver Cards have been incredibly important for easing the cost of living in NSW for 30 years.

“This digital option will make life easier for our seniors today and our seniors tomorrow, who are growing more accustomed to using technology rather than using a physical card,” Mr Bromhead said.

The digital cards will be opt-in only and customers will continue to receive a physical card.

KARUAH is joining other destinations and villages within the Port Stephens LGA as a community with a Place Plan endorsed by Council.

The village sits on calm riverbanks and is renowned for its magnificent oysters.

The village is now bypassed by the freeway, however driving through Karuah doesn’t make your journey north or south any longer, just more scenic.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said the endorsed plan its a great outcome for the community.

“Karuah is a growing village with a unique connection to the local environment.

“The river, wetlands and natural bushland provides valuable habitat for native wildlife and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna,” Mayor Palmer said.

“The Karuah Place Plan celebrates this connection while striking a balance between the need for new housing, business growth and job opportunities.

“The plan identifies two important biodiversity corridors, alongside potential employment zones and the opportunity to

“It gives concrete projects that can be taken on by a range of groups to benefit the wider community.

"Council officers are to be congratulated on the consultative approach taken throughout the development of this plan, including their responsiveness to community feedback on the draft plan, which saw some important changes made to meet community expectations.

"The vibrant Karuah community is ready, willing and able to assist in the rejuvenation of the CBD area and bringing the 7Day Makeover team to Karuah is certainly high on my priority list," he said.

A networking event to launch the Karuah Place Plan is being planned for April, to give the Karuah community, local businesses and Council the opportunity to make new connections and support each other to realise the vision of the plan.

I HAVE cross-referenced the NSW Roundabout rules with my general experience with roundabouts, and can see some different areas for improvement.

I think we could all do with a refresher.

1.

Roundabouts manage the traffic flow. Experience: roundabouts are a demonstration of the sheer bloodymindedness, aggression and indecision of our local residents. If you have an upmarket European car or a jacked-up 4-wheel drive Ute with bull bar and driving lights, this means you automatically have right of way. Everyone will be instinctively aware of this due to their innate need for self-preservation.

2.

When you approach the roundabout, you must slow down or stop to give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout. Experience: It doesn't matter what you do, you've got to watch the bloody idiots who do what they want to do anyway (direct quote from my mother).

3.

On multi-lane roundabouts, you must follow the direction of the arrows or signs on the road. Experience: The signs are there to make you feel a false sense of security. If Mary from Lemon Tree Passage remembers she needs a loaf of bread at the Pauls Corner roundabout, she'll happily cross lanes without a moment's consideration for anyone.

4.

A little-known fact is that there is no requirement to exit a roundabout.

Experience: What fun we could all have going round and round the roundabout, never giving way to anyone, until we run out of petrol (though with current fuel prices, this could be an expensive form of irritation to your fellow motorists). Side note: If you go to Canberra, it is almost obligatory that you get unintentionally stuck on this form of looping madness, wondering if you will ever be able to escape.

96 Years Young THE Myall Park Croquet club members enjoy an active life.

Club member Gordon Ingate proves that staying active is one key to longevity, recently celebrating his 96th birthday with his fellow club members.

On Monday 28 March, nineteen members arrived to compete on quickly drying lawns and were surprised when the expected rains did not come.
