I joined the News Of The Area team in December 2020, with a passion for journalism and a love for the Port Stephens and Myall Coast areas and it’s safe to say that a lot has happened since then.

I’ve been quite lucky to get the opportunity to write about a range of topics, from openings of businesses like Medowie Social to seeing our local stars in shows such as The Addams Family at Young People’s Theatre or Star Struck.

my year was locating and visiting all our local ‘little street libraries’ to donate books and document the libraries for a series of articles.

I’ve loved these libraries since I discovered the first one in Newcastle and so I spent a couple of days compiling lists, scanning community groups and trying my best to locate every single one in the area.

I went on a full day trip, with a backseat full of books and ticked off every little street library in the area (there are at least twelve that span from Stockton to Bulahdelah).

I’ve met some wonderful people throughout my year, and in May I even got to ‘ride in style’ on a 4WD-buggy-tractor combination to visit properties along the Karuah River for a showcase of work from the

www.newsofthearea.com.au in Raymond Terrace when the trees are in bloom, just to name a few.

I think however, the most notable moment for the year came from my visit to Oakvale Wildlife Park, during a time where most of the area was in lockdown and there was no one besides my guide and myself.

I got to write an article about how animals are impacted by COVID-19 with the lack of visitors to zoos and parks, and Angela from the Park let me get up close and personal with some of my favourite animals.

From travelling by boat to visit the lemurs, having meerkats climb all over me, petting a koala and a Texas Longhorn, it was one of the best days of my life.

For the past year I’ve loved meeting all the local politicians, members of community groups, business owners and everyone in between and I look forward to another great year as part of the News Of The Area Team.

In July I had the honour of interviewing Peter Fox, a former policeman and the whistle blower for the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse, which was the most significant interview of my career so far.

We talked for over an hour about his career and what occurred after he published information that led to a Royal Commission, but also his resignation from the Police Force.

I asked him whether, in hindsight, he would do it all again.

Spoiler alert - he would.

Working in the area has made me appreciate all the little things I hadn’t before, even though I’ve grown up in the area; the Bulahdelah bakery that sells the most incredible spinach and cheese pies, seeing Dingoes in Hawks Nest, and Jacaranda Avenue

“Let’s not forget that the only people who voted against the rezoning of Sanderling Avenue were from Taree and it was our supposedly local representatives who voted for it,” Bruce Murray said.

It is no surprise that the impact of prescribed medications on your everyday life will differ depending on the substance prescribed; however there is a relatively new player to the game, being medicinal cannabis.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration reported that over 100,000 applications had been approved for access to medicinal cannabis by March 2021, and legal access to the drug is increasing across Australia.

So what is the impact on it on the everyday lives of those who take it, and those around them?

Medicinal cannabis, which contains THC, can affect your cognitive and motor skills.

When considered in the context of driving, THC in your system will affect your attention, vision and co-ordination.

Unlike alcohol, there is no identifiable concentration of cannabis that indicates impairment, so if you have any cannabis in your system – prescribed or

not – you are putting the safety of yourself and other road users at risk. Roadside saliva testing will generally detect the presence of THC long after the outwardly apparent effects of usage have subsided. This means that those who are prescribed daily use of THC are likely to be detected and charged if they try to drive.

The effects of the prescribed THC can also impact on your relationship with those around you.

Impairment of your memory, judgment, attention and coordination impacts your ability to care for, and be available to, your children and interact with your family and friends.

It is important to remain cognisant of the impact of any drug – including cannabis – on your everyday life and those around you.

DEVELOPERS are on notice with changes to development in relation to deforestation on the horizon and a State Government that has committed to making change.

Port Stephens and Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest are areas with a significant amount of new development planned.

There is the contentious Sanderling Avenue development in Hawks Nest and multiple new housing developments across Port Stephens, including multiple over 55’s communities.

Conservationists say the NSW Government’s vision for more livable communities, outlined in the draft ‘State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) - Design and Place’ is a step in the right direction, ensuring the planning system better serves the needs of people and the environment.

They warn, however, that the NSW Government will have to manage the response from developers to the policy..

Total Environment Centre Director Jeff Angel said, “The developer lobby’s response to the policy has been, quite typically, an hysterical overreaction confected to protect the industry’s mega profits at the expense of communities and environment.

“Look at the mess that developers have made of Sydney so far.

“If the government were to follow the developer lobby’s prescriptions, we’d end up with half the trees, twice the heat and double the heating and cooling costs.”

Nature Conservation Council Acting Chief Executive Jacqui Mumford said, “The government could go further to help communities meet the challenges of the 21st century, including a hotter climate, but the draft policy is a vast improvement on current arrangements.

“It appears the government’s vision, expressed through this policy, supports what the people want more than what the developers are demanding.

“That’s a breath of fresh air.

“The Design and Place SEPP is a significant opportunity for the NSW Government to continue to show leadership, as it has in other sectors, to work rapidly toward net zero emissions and a green economy.”

The two groups said the Premier and Planning Minister must stand up to the developer lobby and defend the people’s interests.

“We'll be making sure local, state and national NGOs and communities know what's at stake,” Ms Mumford said.

CAN you imagine looking out your window and seeing crystal blue water and golden beaches with warm sand with the hint of some greenery?

Can you imagine fishing spots, restaurants and walks along the water?

If you can, you are probably thinking of Hawks Nest.

As you near the beach you can hear the beautiful sound of crashing waves and the sound of jet boats.

New $5000 Alfresco rebate goes live NEWS HOSPITALITY businesses across the State can now register for the NSW Government’s $5000 Alfresco Restart Rebate with the program now live.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the funding will provide thousands of businesses with the opportunity to grow and expand over the busy summer period.

“NSW is the best place to be during summer and we want more businesses to take advantage of our desirable, sunny weather,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Whether you’re a café in Western Sydney, a restaurant in a regional community or a pub on the coast, this is about providing businesses with more choice and convenience.”

There are people in my family who are immuno-compromised and then there are relatives who are young, fit, and healthy, but not vaccinated.

Fire safety reminders for the season

IT has been two years since the 2019 fires in the Christmas holiday period that devastated not only NSW but all of Australia.

For the 2021-22 fire season, the NSW RFS are

warning of increased risk of grass and crop fires in many areas which can pose a significant risk to the community.

“They start and spread quickly, impacting people, properties and infrastructure, and have

a significant impact on local economies,” NSW RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers said Commissioner Rogers said this bushfire season it is important that we all understand our level of risk and prepare accordingly.

Fire and Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Paul McGuiggan said decorative lights and summer barbecues also posed a fire risk around the home.

“Make sure you have a

sufficient number of working smoke alarms throughout your home that are tested regularly and are supported by a home escape plan in case of fire,” he said.

To stay safe, residents should clean out gutters confirming no leaf material is left there.

Combustible materials should not be near houses, including piles of wood that may have been stacked up for the winter.

“This new process will better inform communities and agencies about the level of bush fire risk and allow improvements in the way

treatments are targeted,” Commissioner Rogers said.

This work, in conjunction with a focus on delivering a tenure blind approach to hazard complaints hopes to increase community confidence while reducing the risks.

A BIG congratulations to the outstanding young people named winners at the first ever MidCoast Youth Awards.

Young people aged between 12 and 24 were recognised for their contributions to the community at an awards ceremony held at the MidCoast Council Chambers at Yalawanyi Ganya in Taree.

The winners and sponsors are: Leadership Award (Cluster 4 Rotary District 9650) - Seleana Murphy (12-17 age bracket), Lucas Kloosterhoof (18-24 age bracket) Arts Award (Friends of the Gallery) - Sally Curnow (12-17 age bracket), Georgia Hudson (18-24 age bracket) Entrepreneur Award (LJ Hooker Taree) Jake Davey Resilience Award (Compass Housing) - Tess Hoadley (12-17 age bracket), Molly Mitchell (18-24 age bracket) Community Service (Club Taree) - Amber Kelleher (12-17 age bracket), Tristan Smith (18-24 age bracket)

Council’s General Manager Adrian Panuccio said he was proud to have such talented and public-spirited young people in the region.

“Recognising the efforts of our youth is a great way to encourage our future leaders to keep up the great work and continue making a difference in the MidCoast and beyond.

A NUMBER of years ago The Myall Koala and Environment Group decided to establish an avenue of koala food trees in Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest in memory of John Davis, Great Lake Council’s Tree Management Officer, who sadly passed away in 2011.

John had suggested a concept of an avenue of varying species of eucalypts favoured by koalas that could showcase to the community

and landowners, trees that might be suitable for their properties.

The trees would also provide food for the local koalas.

John’s brother Mark donated $4,000 to our Group from John’s estate to realise his vision.

“Our early attempts to establish the eleven stands of different tree species were a bit hitand-miss,” said Ian Morphett, Secretary, Myall Koala & Environment Group.

“Some trees didn’t survive hotter weather when young and, unfortunately, some were vandalised.

“Eventually, a small band of volunteers headed by Jill Madden, managed to encourage successful growth by watering, mulching and weeding.

“Most of the trees in the avenue today can be attributed to their efforts,” Ian said.

Jill then embarked on the next phase of her plan to establish a nature walk around

and give our younger residents a voice.

Residents in various parts of Hawks Nest were approached to ask if they were prepared to have a koala food tree planted on the verge in front of their house.

“To protect the young trees, we commissioned the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Mens Shed to make tree guards,” Ian said.

Emergency Service reminders for the Summer

PREPARE a plan, don’t drive through flood water and swim between the flags - these are some of the summer safety tips NSW emergency service agencies have shared as the holidays approach.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic.

“Over the past few years, the NSW community has been hit hard, by fire, flood and even a pandemic, but these aren’t the only threats we face.

“I would urge everyone to use the start of summer to start a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for other seasonal natural disasters, including heatwaves, storms, boating and other water accidents,” he said.

Police NSW Police Force Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell said summer is a particularly

busy time of year for police and emergency services and urged the community to put safety first.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, know your limits and do not drink and drive.

“The roads will be busier than we have seen for a long time, so factor in extra time and remember that police will be out on the streets, on our roads, in, on and around the water, and even in the air,” Thurtell said.

SES Every year people risk their lives and the lives of others by driving through floodwaters.

“You wouldn’t run into a bushfire, so never drive, walk or ride through floodwater – it’s incredibly dangerous for both you and the volunteers who will need to rescue you.

“Secure loose outdoor items, cleaning gutters and downpipes and trimming overhanging trees can also make a big difference when severe weather strikes,” NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said.

Marine Rescue “Boaters should always

log on with Marine Rescue when heading out and log off when they return via VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue App. It’s quick and simple and gives you the reassurance that our volunteers are watching out for your safe return,” said Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos.

Surf LifeSaving Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce spoke about the importance of water safety.

“My message to beachgoers this summer is to only swim at patrolled beaches, stay between the red and yellow flags, always check conditions before heading out, wear a life jacket when boating or rock fishing, and be sure to keep an eye on your mates,” Mr Pearce said.

Ambulance NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dr Dominic Morgan warned the community about the dangers of risk-taking behaviour resulting from excessive alcohol consumption and drug taking as the economy

opens.

“People have every right to enjoy a drink or two and let their hair down this summer, especially after a trying time during lockdown.

“Be smart and considerate about it and make sure you stay safe and keep others safe while enjoying yourself in a responsible way, because there is nothing fun about ending your night in the back of an ambulance,” he said.

All communities are urged to follow the following five steps: 1. Know your risk: think about the area you’re in and the types of disasters that could affect you 2. Plan now for what you will do: talk with your family and plan for what you will do if a disaster affects your area or where you plan to holiday this summer 3. Get your home ready: prepare your home

Women in Sport women’s sport continue to go from strength to strength but there is still more work to be done.

“The new Advisory Council will ensure we are striking the right balance and coming up with new ways to level the playing field for women in sport.”

The Game Changers Ministerial Advisory Council will be chaired by Christine McLoughlin AM, Chairman and Co-Founder of the Minerva Network and Chair of Destination NSW. Other Council members are Stephanie Brantz, Chair Sports Diplomacy Advisory Council (DFAT), Director Football NSW; Louise Sauvage OAM, Paralympian, NSWIS High Performance Coach; Matthew Curll, Partner Hall & Wilcox; Amy Duggan, Former Matilda, Director Football Federation Australia, Director Venues NSW; Phil Kearns AM, Former Wallabies
