transformational projects – both big and small – via many programs developed by The Nationals in Government to ensure our region continues to grow and prosper.”

Dr Gillespie highlighted a record investment in MidCoast and Port Stephens Council’s infrastructure programs including new local community and sporting facilities, building new bridges, fixing local blackspots and repairing rural roads.

Securing funding for upgrading both the Hawks Nest Community Hall and the Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest Surf Club was also hailed a success.

“There are literally hundreds of projects right across our region that simply would not have happened had it not been for The Nationals in government delivering the programs that have helped fund them,” Dr Gillespie said.

Several new projects were also announced at the launch.

“Following discussions with both Port Stephens, MidCoast and Dungog Councils regarding the extension of round three of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure in this year’s Federal Budget, I’m pleased to announce several local road and community infrastructure projects will be recommended to the department for approval,” Dr Gillespie said.

“This funding is in addition to other Federal funding that has been allocated to programs such as Roads to Recovery and Federal Financial Assistance Grants for various infrastructure projects either underway or earmarked by Council across the region.”

population growth factor, which gives the MidCoast a 0.9 percent increase.

MidCoast Councillor’s Finance Manager Phil Brennan said that this is

significantly below the price increases currently being experienced.

“It will generate a total of $1.951 million in additional rate income each year and over $14 million throughout the next ten years,” Mr Brennan said.

The IPART decision has had an impact on local government across the state, and as a result of the pressure applied by Councils, the State Government has allowed all Councils the opportunity to apply to increase rates for next year back to the level

Mr Hornshaw is a member of the Liberal Democrats National Policy Committee, where he was one of the authors of the ‘Freedom Manifesto’, which outlines the party’s ten key policies.

“The Liberal Democrats believe in less government, more freedom.

“We are a party that puts principles first, and we have been true to those principles since we started

“Our policies include low, flat taxes - $40,000 tax free threshold and 20 percent flat tax above that.

“Policies to make it easier to start and run a small business without all the red tape that favours big business, including voluntary superannuation, recall elections and voluntary voting, cheap and reliable energy and decentralised education; funding students not institutions and allowing families to decide what sort of education suits their own needs and values.

“It’s time to stand up to the major parties and say that enough is enough,” he said.

The First Home Owner Grant of $10,000 remains available to first home buyers who buy a newly built home or vacant land on which they build a new home. The grant is in addition to stamp duty exemptions or concessions which are also available to first home buyers buying an existing home under the First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme.

To be eligible for the grant, a cap of $600,000 applies to newly built homes whilst a cap of $750,000 applies to the combined value of the land and the building contract for a new home builder.

The NSW Government has however identified a loophole in the scheme as the value of the land and the building contract is currently determined as at the date the building contract is entered into. It has therefore

been possible for parties to subsequently enter into postcontract variations that take the value of the transaction over the cap whilst still remaining eligible for the grant.

The State Revenue and Fines Legislation Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill was introduced to parliament on 23 March 2022 and amongst other measures, proposes to make amendments to the FHOG to overcome this loophole. If enacted, the amendments will ensure that the provisions cannot be circumvented through post contract variations, and that if the total value of a contract exceeds the eligibility cap, the grant will be required to be repaid.

"The A10-Shun Veterans Support Group offers a hand of friendship and support to our veteran community by way of meet ups for coffee and chats, an ear to bash, visits by myself and my companion dogs to our veterans when not coping with day-to-day life, and a bed and feed for veterans in dire need.

“I want our local veterans to know that they’re not alone and support is only a phone call away 24/7.

“Veterans’ wellbeing and mental health is close and dear to my heart.”

A10-Shun is in its early stages of establishment and any support or volunteers will be welcomed with open arms.

“The group’s motto is ‘facta non verba’ or action not words," Shane said.

The morning came to a close with a gunfire breakfast, coffee and rum, and lots of laughs.

Shane was also asked lots of questions from the younger generation on his role within the Royal Australian Armoured Corps as a tank crewman.

It was this aspect that made Shane the "most happy".

“The interest shown by the younger generation, leads me to believe that the ANZAC spirit is in good hands.”

Shane and the team are looking forward to making the service on ANZAC Day an annual event along with a Remembrance Day service within the community of Bulahdelah and its surrounds.

“Petitioners may be comforted to know that any future development on the site would still be subject to Council’s development application process which includes community consultation through public exhibition.”

Minister Roberts also discussed that as part of the process, any application must outline the type, scale and layout of the proposed housing, with Council needing to conduct detailed investigations and consider site issues such as views from Bennetts Beach.

“Development cannot occur ahead of Council making an appropriate determination based on these processes,” Minister Roberts said.

Council is seeking input from a range of community groups and members with connections to our estuaries.

“How our community uses our waterways, the

areas of the estuaries they visit and what they value in these areas is an important part of the preparation of the coastal management program,” Council’s Manager of Natural Systems, Gerard Tuckerman said.

“We want to hear from residents of the estuaries, locals in the MidCoast local government area and visitors to our region to find out more about the areas they enjoy for recreation, what areas they think are most important and how they would like to help

protect our waterways in the future."

Council is inviting the community to participate in an online survey to provide their views on the areas they love.

Following the recent Council meeting on 27 April, Councillors unanimously voted to endorse the Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan which has now been placed on public exhibition.

When drafting the plan, Council sought community consultation in a period between July 2021 and March 2022.

Council engaged with over 230 people from across the MidCoast region in a variety of methods.

A representative from the Council stated that the consultation process “helped us to understand the barriers faced by people living with a disability in the MidCoast and insight into the role Council can play in removing them”.

The draft plan focuses on four key areas, as set by the NSW Government: attitudes and behaviours, liveable communities, meaningful employment and systems and processes.

and achievable actions, with the aim of improving the lives of people with disability living in and visiting the MidCoast LGA as well as identifying key stakeholders that can assist with the implementation of the strategies.

Claire Pontin, Mayor of MidCoast Council, said that it is a pleasure to present the new draft plan.

“Our first plan was developed soon after the

establishment of MidCoast Council, but now we can do so much more than what we focused on in the original plan.

“Our consultations with people with disabilities and their carers highlighted the prejudice and bias in the community and the lack of opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in society.”

Mayor Pontin says that the Council will now focus on this and ensure that it is implemented in the broader community.

“It is incumbent on all of us to help in removing barriers for people with disabilities; everyone deserves to be able to live, work and play without obstacles,” Mayor Pontin said.

THE ANZAC spirit has never been better demonstrated than in the return of one father’s medals to a daughter 30 years after they were lost.

Wendy Moore is that daughter.

Her father Eric James Cross grew up in Bulahdelah and served in the Korean War. Eric's mother Clara Mayers died in 1928, leaving seven children.

Eric was just eighteen months old.

Eric and his three siblings, Frederick, Eileen and Norma, were fostered by the Griffis family at Bulahdelah.

The family is still piecing together their history.

They know the three older children, John, Nellie and Charles, stayed in the Bulahdelah and Nabiac area

for some time.

It is a mystery to the family as to why the Griffis family fostered four young children when they already had a large family of their own to raise.

Clara Mayers was a Worimi woman, born at Bulahdelah in 1891.

Eric's parents never married, and there are conflicting stories about who looked after the children when Clara died, before they were fostered.

Recently, Wendy’s brother-in-law Andrew Gorry asked Wendy’s sister if her father went to the Korean War. Andrew had come into possession of a Korean War Medal with E J Cross inscribed on the side.

Wendy confirmed her father's service number of 1400291 and that the medal was in fact her father's.

Andrew had bought a 1964 EH Sedan 30-plus years ago, and it had been sitting in the shed for a number of years.

He recently sold it to mutual friend Craig Mclean.

Craig is stripping the car back to restore it.

When he pulled the back seat out there was a large wasp's nest which he threw in the bin - but not before noticing something stuck in it.

He broke the nest and found the medal.

After cleaning it up a bit he thought he better give it back to Andrew in case it belonged to a family member of his.

Emergency Services Update SCHOOL Bus Safety NSW Police are reminding residents to take extra care around buses as children make their way to and from school.

Under advice from NSW Road Safety, they remind everyone to slow down around buses, whether the lights are flashing or not as there can be children around.

Drivers should keep plenty of space when driving or stopping around buses to keep children safe and improve bus drivers’ vision of the road environment.

Anzac Day Long Weekend Over the ANZAC Day long weekend there were a number of alcohol-related incidents in the Port Ste-

phens Hunter Police District.

- Security at a licensed premises ejected two heavily intoxicated people from the location.

The people assaulted security, and, when police officers attended, they assaulted police.

Both have been charged.

- Five people assaulted

three victims after all eight persons were ejected from a licensed premises.

The offenders allegedly hid in bushes outside and set upon the victims as they were exiting.

Inquiries are continuing.

- A male victim attempted to intervene in an assault at a licensed premises.

Rock Fisherman Officers from the Manning-Great Lakes Police District are urging rock fisherman to take caution in and around the water following the death of a fisherman in the MidCoast region after being pulled from the water.

Police attended the region following reports a rock fisherman had fallen into the water while fishing with a friend.

The man – who was not wearing a life vest – was pulled from the water by emergency services personnel using a jetski and a dingy.

Ambulance personnel commenced CPR on the man on the beach.

Despite their efforts, the man died at the scene.

Seniors Urged To Be Vigilant Against Scam SENIOR Australians are being urged to stay vigilant against scams, as the total cost swindled from older consumers skyrockets to over $11 million last year.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) received 16,915 reports from seniors that had been scammed in 2021.

Minister for Fair Trading Eleni Petinos said $6.7 million had been lost through false billing scams, where scammers request payment through fake invoices for goods or services which were never ordered.

"In one case, a consumer lost $760,000 when their mortgage broker's email had been compromised,” Ms Petinos said.

Class 352 joins the Police district

MORE than 200 new frontline police will hit the ground in communities all over the state over the coming weeks following a recent Attestation ceremony in Goulburn.

Port Stephens Hunter Police District is looking

forward to the community getting to know the two new recruits, who joined the district on Monday 2 May 2022 as part of class 352.

Class 352 includes 142 men and 60 women from all ages, backgrounds and regions across the state and country.

They will complete their

year of on-the-job training and the Associate Degree in Policing Practice by distance education with Charles Sturt University before being confirmed to the rank of constable.

NEW targets to halve deaths and reduce serious injuries by 30 percent on NSW roads by 2030 have underpinned the NSW Government 2026 Road Safety Action Plan to reduce the road toll.

“One death is a death too many and we want to create the safest road system we can, so that everyone using

the road returns home safely to their families,” Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said.

Mrs Ward says that the previous NSW Road Safety Plan worked to save lives.

“270 people were killed on NSW roads last year, our lowest road toll since 1923, but this number is still too high.

“That was a heartening result but it’s vital we look

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By John SLATER 27 MAY Rain threatened again today, and the 44 players competing in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition format played to an altered format of one game of 18 ends.

A new opportunity of winning was initiated today, along with the usual prizes, the ‘total winning score plus winning ends’ was added.

The winners of the new prize with 46 points were Brian Newberry, Ron Rowe, and Alan Greenhalgh.

The other winners were decided by the 'highest winning margin' as selected by the bar staff.

On the grass Keith Smith, Graham Reynolds and Mark Nightingale won with a 23-point margin, and on the synthetic Peter Cheney, Geoff Page and John Slater had an 11-point margin to take the money.

30 May Three games in the Club Championship Triples were played today in appalling conditions.

In keeping with the Management Committee’s decision to play all championship competitions on the grass green, the soggy start of play was compounded when more rain and showers came and persisted through the afternoon.

Teams with the strongest arms had a distinct advantage as games degenerated into a hard slog.

One team forfeited when it was apparent that injury to backs, shoulders and arms was not worth the risk of continuing.

Of the games that continued, Greg Smith, Dennis Ashbridge and Jeff Baker defeated Tony Butler, Col Amos, and Mark

Murphy were not ready to throw in the towel, they scored 9 points over the next 5 ends the opposition just 2, resulting in a 17 all draw.

A much closer contest for Pam Gilchrist, Maynie Roberts and Karen McPhie v Christine Fossey, Dot Dallas and Robyn Beaumont.

Karen’s team held a narrow lead all through the game just ahead by 2 points going into the last end, 17 v 15.

Karen’s team won by 3 on the last end, final score 18 v 15.

The winners on the day winning with the lowest margin were Pam, Maynie and Karen.

Thursday 28 April: What a massive day, Bring a Friend to Bowls Day combined with The Council Cancer Australia’s Morning Tea. There were lots of TGWBC members on the green today combined with 20 friends.

Masters Nationals STORY STARTS on BACK COVER, Page 20 Chris Lock who medalled in all his nine individual events.

Chris, in the Men’s 80-84 age group placed first in the 25m, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke as well as the 25m butterfly.

Chris also achieved second in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events, taking home a swag of five Gold and four Silver Medals.

Along the way, Chris broke two Australian National Records, first in the 25m Backstroke and then blitzing the 100m backstroke, shaving two seconds off his own previously held National Record.

This, for Chris, was the biggest haul of medals ever in his swimming career.

Apart from his focused effort on his fitness and preparation, Chris acknowledges that since The Y has been managing Tea Gardens Pool, their continual set up of the pool, with fixed lane ropes and permanent backstroke flags, has allowed him to fine-tune his starts, turns and finishes - which are vital skills to cutting down your race time.

Not only did Chris swim over a three day period but somehow he managed to find time to also work in an official capacity as Chief Timekeeper at the meet.

Chris Lock said, “The atmosphere at Sydney Olympic Park was first class and a wonderful and memorable experience.”

A definite highlight of his swimming career.

FINALLY, a fine day and we were able to play the Monthly Mug on Saturday April 30.

The course has been closed, or just too wet to even consider a game over the past few weeks - except for some really keen golfers.

The weather was kind for a few hours and 32 players, including 4 visitors from Toronto, braved the muddy conditions. Some players found the going just too hard, and the scores were not great, but the eventual winner of the

mug was J.Parnell with 74nett on a c/b from S.Moss.

The ladies’ winner was T-L.Smith with 80nett from S.Bambrook with 82nett.

M.Bramble won the Jackpot and the NTPs S.McNaughton, S.Sharp and T-L.Smith.

The long drivers were T.Carroll, D.Schoonhoven, R.Norberry & T-L.Smith.

We’re all hoping for a few weeks of drier weather as the Foursomes Championships will be played in May.

OFF GRID: THE WAY TO GO? “Is it a risky move to buy a property that’s totally off grid?”

OFF-GRID is an example of shifting priorities.

Previously it conjured up images of a rustic – or rusty – cabin in some remote backwater, lit by candles or kerosene lamps, cooking on a wood stove or open fire. But no more. Thanks to technological advances, off-grid today is far more sophisticated with solar panels and backup batteries providing sufficient and affordable energy to run a full home, day and night, year-round. And off-grid is not the sole domain of remote rural properties. Many residential homes are disconnecting from the grid, not simply to curb sky-rocketing energy prices, or leave a lighter footprint, but, in the face of grid overload during our increasingly hot summers, to take control over their energy supply. I know several residential properties that run totally off-grid without issue. These are the sorts of reasons they have possibly told you about their monitoring system.

Or you could use it as a social experiment. After a while you will probably forget all about the 24-hour surveillance.

How the owners deal with this is up to them.

They should have fully informed you of the set up prior to you agreeing to it, instead of being sneaky voyeurs.

Masters Nationals A SMALL but enthusiastic and talented team of four members represented the Myall Masters Swimming Club at Masters Swimming Australia’s National competition at Sydney Olympic Park between 20 – 23 April.

Chris Lock and Christine Sefton participated most days over the meet with Sharon Taylor and Leon Bobako participating for one day.

From this small group, the results were outstanding.

All four members entered as a team in the Mixed 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay and the Mixed 4 x 50 Medley Relay in the 240 – 279 age bracket and placed a very creditable fifth in

both races.

Individually, Christine Sefton, in the Women’s 50 – 54 age group placed fourth in 25m, 50m and 100m breaststroke and 9th in 100m freestyle.

Sharon Taylor, in the Women’s 55-59 age group, placed fourth in the 25m breaststroke and fifth in the 100m Individual Medley.

Along the way, Sharon was able to equal the time that she had swum some 20 years earlier, in the 100m Individual Medley.

Not to be outdone, Leon Bobako, in the Men’s 70-74 age group achieved a Silver Medal, placing second in the 25m breaststroke and fifth in the 50m butterfly.
