The school and all its students are pleased to have given a big welcome to the 27 students that started Kindergarten this year.

The school recently held its annual swimming carnival with Junior Champions Liam Mitchell and Lily Fidden joining Senior Champions Rory Ingram and Grace Ehlefeldt.

Myall Lakes Dingos a Population Hotspot

IN the debate surrounding wild dogs and dingos there is new science behind why some dingos may not look quite the way many people think they should.

A study by The University Of Sydney states that there is no coat colour that distinguishes dingos from hybrid dingos.

This is a scientifically determined fact, one that means that animals assumed to be dingo-dog hybrids based on their coat colour and culled; may have been pure dingoes.

“We actually found pure dingoes that had a brindle, black and tan, patchy or sable

coat colour,” Dr Kylie Cairns, a conservation biologist from UNSW Sydney and co-author of the study said.

Dingoes are much more variable than we think and seeing an animal with an odd coat colour doesn't immediately mean that it's a hybrid.

A media release from the University based around the study and research is titled “It’s not ‘wild dog’ management – we are just killing dingoes.”

The researchers also identified several ‘hotspots’ in north-eastern NSW where more pure dingoes exist than expected: Port Macquarie, Myall Lakes and the Washpool National Park area were all

identified.

The Myall Lakes area being identified will not be news to most locals, after all Myall means wild place.

“Our study shows that for all intents and purposes, wild dogs and dingoes are one and the same,” says UNSW Professor Mike Letnic, coauthor of the study.

Professor Letnic is an advisor on the Aussie Ark project based in the Hunter and has won the Eureka Prize for Environmental Research in 2013 and the Jabez King Heydon Memorial Prize in 2003.

The study follows 2019 research by UNSW and collaborators which found that almost all wild dogs in NSW are dingoes or dingodominant hybrids, challenging the widely held view that pure dingoes are virtually extinct in the state.

The study, published in the Journal of Zoology, found that while 53% of dingoes have a ginger coat colour, 9% were sable, 11% black and tan, 14% brindle, 5% black, 1% white and 6% were patchy (white with spots of ginger or black).

Researchers examined

HUNTER schools are set to receive new and improved facilities, with more than $12 million announced for local schools as part of the Berejiklian Government’s $120 million Regional Renewal Program.

Since the announcement of the Regional Renewal Program in October last year, schools have been invited to apply for renewal projects to improve their school facilities.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said that 59 local public schools will have upgrades to

learning, sporting, amenities, building and administration facilities.

“This investment by the Government is part of our commitment to build a safer and stronger regional NSW,” Mr Martin said.

“It will ensure regional students can thrive in a great learning environment, no matter where they live or what their circumstances may be.

“Delivery of these projects will be undertaken in the next 18 months as part of the Berejiklian Government’s economic stimulus package for NSW schools.”

The Regional Renewal Program will provide a

government co-contribution of between 50 to 80 per cent for school infrastructure improvements to high priority schools in regional NSW. Projects may include new and upgraded covered outdoor learning areas, science facilities, toilet blocks, administration buildings and canteens.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said these projects across the Hunter region are part of the NSW Government’s stimulus program and the State’s COVID-19 Recovery Plan.

As the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine nears, the next challenge for employers is how to deal with employees that refuse to be vaccinated.

Some recent cases in relation to mandatory flu vaccines provide some guidance to employers in relation to when it is reasonable for employers to mandate vaccinations.

In Ms Maria Corazon Glover v Ozcare 2020 FWC 13450, the Applicant was a long-standing employee of the Respondent. Her duties included visiting people and caring for them at their homes.

In 2020, the Respondent directed that the Applicant have the flu vaccine. In previous years, the Applicant declined a flu vaccine for medical reasons and this was accepted by the Respondent. However, as a result of the pandemic, the Respondent refused to roster the Applicant on shifts unless she was vaccinated.

The Fair Work Commission provided some guidance as to whether the Respondent’s

direction mandating the flu vaccine was a lawful and reasonable direction. The Fair Work Commission considered that a direction requiring an employee to be vaccinated will be considered a reasonable direction if the vaccination is required for the employee to undertake the inherent requirements of their job.

The question of whether the vaccination is required for an employee to undertake the inherent requirements of their job will depend on the circumstances of each job and the environment of the workplace.

In the context of COVID-19, it seems from this decision that whether an employer can direct that an employee be vaccinated will obviously be clearer for people working in hospitals, aged care, child care centres and schools.

By Myall U3A Photography Group THE Myall U3A Photography Group have selected their ‘Example of the Set Subject’ for February, a wildlife shot by group member Ann Woods.

Each month, the Group will select a photograph to highlight in the Myall Coast News Of The Area.

"The picture is of an osprey perching in one of the trees overlooking Jimmy's Beach down near the Short Cut,” said Ann. “It was taken in June last winter when the ospreys were frequent visitors there in the afternoons, especially on windy days, where they used the high trees to look for prey in the water.

“They are awesome, efficient hunters.

“I walk down there most afternoons and always take my camera.

“I'm not a natural walker and taking pictures of the bird life down there makes the walk bearable,” said Ann. Philip Downing, Co-Convener of the Myall U3A Photography Group, was impressed with the quality of Ann’s submission.

“It was selected by the Photography Group Co-Convenors as the photo represents many of the aspirations of our Group.

“It is local, topical and represents a high quality photograph of wildlife in our area,” Philip said.

Community and heritage funding available MIDCOAST Council’s Community Donations and Heritage Funding rounds opened on 1 March, two of the competitive funding opportunities Council offers each year.

Community Donations funding rounds are administered under Council’s Community Donations Policy which invites not-for-profit organisations to apply for funding to deliver community-development and capacity-building projects and activities.

Up to $2000 is available for capacitybuilding projects under the Annual Donations Program, or up to $10,000 over two years for significant projects under the Seed Funding Program.

While the focus of the funding is on building capacity of organisations or the set-up of new, innovative programs, sometimes an organisation just needs new equipment to enable them to continue operating effectively.

Previous funding rounds have funded a full range of activities from program start-

ups to improving accessibility of facilities, to equipment purchases like a PA system.

“Not-for-profit organisations are a really important part of our community and this donations program is one way we can acknowledge and support their tireless work and ongoing contributions,” explained Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council’s Director of Liveable Communities.

“Each year it’s great to see the different ways these funds can help innovative projects get off the ground, or assist in providing much-needed equipment.”

Applications for the 2021/22 Donations Program open on Monday 1 March and close on Saturday 27 March.

Anyone across the MidCoast who owns a heritage listed place or property within a heritage conservation area, may be eligible for a grant through the Local Heritage Fund.

The Local Heritage Fund has been available across the MidCoast since 2017 and aims to preserve the region’s heritage while breathing new life into buildings and places from our past.

Council has seen some amazing restoration projects come to life through this initiative, and the team is pleased to be working alongside Heritage NSW again this year to open up this exciting funding opportunity.

Paul noted that these grants are like a helping hand.

“They are a great way to make a start on your renovation project. The grants offer assistance of up to $2,000, but in some special cases up to $5,000 can be provided.

“As part of the application process, eligible property owners must demonstrate their contribution to the project, as the grant cannot make up more than 50 per cent of the total project cost,” he said.

Some examples of the work that could be completed with the heritage grant funding include repairing front fences, replacing guttering and fascia board, external painting, replacement of roofing and repairs to windows and verandahs.

Bridge is back AFTER many months layoff due to COVID-19, members of the Hawks Nest Bridge Club have made their return to the Clubhouse.

Club member Peter Baily said he is excited that the action has recommenced. .

“We play three times a week under COVID compliant conditions,” Peter said.

“As well as our weekly bridge, we plan to reintroduce our popular bimonthly Sunday luncheon with bridge combined, commencing at the end of March.”

For members who are not based permanently in Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens, the Club runs on-line bridge sessions using Bridge Base Online.

Myall Way Council’s Sponsorship policy Safety Wait THE wait continues for safety upgrades to the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest intersection of the M1 and Myall Way. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington has been urging Transport for NSW for months to improve the safety of this notoriously dangerous spot.

“With yet another accident at the Myall Way/M1 intersection, there can be no question that there’s an urgent need for improved safety measures,” she said.

“It’s a relief to see warning lights and upgrades underway at the Bucketts Way intersection, but Myall Way needs urgent attention too.”

Community groups and Ms Washington have long been advocating for

the addition of warning lights ahead of the intersection, to warn road users that they may be approaching queued traffic attempting to turn down Myall Way. “I’ve raised the urgent need for an upgrade with Transport for NSW on numerous occasions,” said Ms Washington.

“In the absence of any answers, I’ve secured a meeting with TfNSW later this week.

“I’ll keep pushing until we at least get warning lights installed.

“No-one else should lose their life due to any further delay,” she said.

News Of The Area approached Transport for NSW for comment, however no response was received prior to publication.

THE MidCoast community is being urged to provide feedback on Council’s updated Events and Festivals Sponsorship Policy that is currently on public exhibition.

Councillors workshopped the policy last year before submitting it for review to Council’s Policy Review Committee in November.

At the February 2021 Council meeting, the revised policy was presented and Councillors resolved to place the updated Events and Festivals Sponsorship Policy on public exhibition.

The main changes to the policy are the reduction in the number of sponsorship categories, updated sponsorship category titles, new assessment criteria for each category and the decision to have the majority of sponsorship assessments completed via a single round, rather than the two rounds previously run.

Dingo Plan

By Tara CAMPBELL DINGO management in the Myall Coast and Hawks Nest area is a prominent issue at current times.

Following on from ‘Dingo Plan’, published in the 25 February 2021 edition of News of the Area, the Council has put forth more information about their plans for dingo management.

Environmental Projects Officer, Nicholas Colman discussed the Dingo Management plan for the area.

The overarching concept of the plan is to “initiate a change in behaviour to lessen human/ dingo conflict”.

In addition to the original management plan of the interactive portal on

the Council Website and the commission of information signs, the Council are also undertaking several other tasks aimed at improving safety.

The Council are in the works of preparing an information brochure for residents and tourist operators on how to be dingo smart.

They are also in discussion with the Mid Coast Council waste team to put information stickers on bins in the region to provide

Importantly, the Council are in discussion with the University of New South Wales, who are currently researching dingo movements in our region, to expand their monitoring aspect via camera trapping.

The plan of this is to get accurate population numbers and also serve to identify problematic and non-problematic dingoes via specific markings.

Pub Opens Playground

By Tara CAMPBELL A NEW playground has opened in the Tea Gardens Hotel, for all to use.

Since 2020, the Hotel has been working on this playground, with the first initial idea in July.

It’s been a wild ride getting the playground together, from the equipment (which was coming from Poland) getting stuck in customs because of COVID-19, to having to postpone the opening date due to restrictions.

Initially, the Hotel had planned on opening the playground before

Christmas, but with the delays and restrictions it was only recently that everything was ready for an official opening.

The opening aligned with Tea Gardens Hotel publican Ben Hanson’s son’s fifth birthday.

“It was all a success, kids were having a ball,” Mr Hanson said.

“It went really well.

“There were a lot of kids playing on the first day.

“On the post on Facebook there were about 300-400 comments in the first 24 hours.”

TEA Gardens Library will welcome back Mick Marcon, Losang Dragpa Kadampa Buddhist Centre’s resident teacher, for an inspiring talk on the book ‘The New Eight Steps to Happiness’, this Friday 5 March.

Mick has delivered talks across a number of local library locations in the past and returns this year with more knowledge and insight to share, on behalf of the book’s author Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

Bridge Maintenance MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions on the Pacific Highway at Karuah to carry out maintenance on bridges over the Karuah River.

Transport for NSW will carry out the work from Monday 1 March, which includes cleaning the bridge abutments, vegetation clearing, drainage repairs and joint maintenance.

Work will be carried out from 7am to 5pm from Monday to Thursday and is

expected to be completed in two weeks, weather permitting.

One lane will be closed with a 40km/h speed limit in place during work hours, which may impact travel times.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.

Tea Gardens Celebrates New Restaurant Opening

TEA Gardens had a reason to celebrate on Friday night with the opening of a new restaurant, The Garden Eatery.

Jenny and Ly, the proud owners felt the only way to begin their venture was with the inclusion of Chinese tradition in the celebration.

Locals were treated to the spectacular sight and sounds of the lion dance.

In Chinese culture the lion dance is used to chase away evil spirits and represents wealth, prosperity and good luck.

The two lions, along with their dancers and a host of drummers delighted with their antics.

After dinner the performers went on to show off their martial skills.

The lions and performers came from the Dong Thanh Alliance Martial Arts school in Sydney specifically for the opening.

Whilst the noise and pageantry of the opening was a reason to pay attention so is the passion of Jenny and Ly for food and for Tea Gardens.

“We love the area, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, the

local community here are so warm and lovely,” Jenny said.

“The green leaf on our logo represents new beginnings and growth.

“We hope The Garden Eatery will continue to grow and become part of the local community.”

Ly and Jenny have been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years.

Road improvements for waterways A two year project to ensure run off from unsealed roads is cleaner before it reaches MidCoast waterways will see significant improvements for roads and our environment alike.

MidCoast Council and NSW Local Land Services have been working together to implement the NSW Government’s Marine Estate Management Strategy (MEMS) to protect and enhance the waterways of

MidCoast Council.

“Water will always run off the roads and into our waterways,” said Drew Morris, Catchment Officer for Midcoast Council.

“Through this project though, we are trying to make sure the water running off the road is as clean as possible.”

Unsealed roads are a significant source of sediment and nutrients into our waterways.

During rain events

water runs down the roads, taking sediments from the road and the surrounding landscape and depositing them into our rivers, creeks and bays.

This muddy water can smother animals and plants, clog fish gills and reduce the health of our rivers and streams.

To achieve this over

20 creek crossings and unsealed roads within close proximity to rivers across the MidCoast will be sealed this year.

Sealing the approaches to river systems stabilises the road and allows roadside vegetation such as grasses and sedges to establish, further reducing sedimentation of our

SURF Life Saving Clubs in Port Stephens and the Myall Coast will benefit from upgraded equipment and bolstered training programs to keep beachgoers safe.

The Australian Government is providing $9.7 million in additional funding to Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) as it continues to protect beachgoers and improve volunteer lifesaving

skills.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the funding would be vital for Hunter Surf Life Saving clubs where volunteers have performed thousands of patrol hours this season and rely on the best skills and equipment to keep beachgoers safe.

“This means each surf lifesaving club will now be

able to access up to $10,000 per annum over the next two years to purchase new or replacement patrol equipment,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Our surf lifesavers play such a vital role at our beaches saving lives and dealing with emergencies in the water and on the beach day in, day out,” Dr Gillespie said.

“This additional funding will ensure our local clubs

will have the ability to purchase vital equipment and medical supplies that they need to keep Australians safe on our beaches.”

I WISH you could have given me a bit more information about your musical tastes.

I’m going to use a bit of artistic liberty.

If you are sensitive enough to write to an agony aunt, I’m guessing you like a bit of Creedence Clearwater Revival mixed in with some Fleetwood Mac and on your more sombre and reflective days, some Cat Stevens and Simon and Garfunkel interspersed with the Ten Percent Happier podcast.

And who could blame you.

Car travel can transport your mind and body.

There’s nothing quite like a road trip, even if you’re just taking your teenager to school because she missed the bus – again.

And yet you find yourself, not only stressed at her lack of time management, but suddenly being mentally thrashed by a playlist that includes Doja Cat and Cardi B with lines such as ‘pop that like Ginkgo biloba / That booty don’t need no more soda’ and you wonder why you forked out all that cash on English tuition.

In this instance, there are a few options.

You can either alternate – song for song – so only half the trip is the mental equivalent of being stuck in a lift and verbally assaulted by an angry stranger, or you can say that the driver is the DJ (which will work until your daughter is practicing for her driver’s licence).

The other alternative is headphones (on your daughter) or some time out from music so you can ask her questions that she doesn’t want to answer under the guise of parent-child bonding.

All in all, I’d say just avoid the situation and give her a bus timetable.

24 FEBRUARY Wow! An amazing turnout today with 64 players chancing their arms in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples.

There were 18 teams of triples and 4 teams of 2.

This was our best rollup this year and it is not difficult to predict that we will put up the “house full” sign later in the year.

The winners on 23 points were Keith Smith, R. Davis (a visitor) and Scott Fitzalan.
